Once a retreat for aristocrats and artists
now a sanctuary for those seeking longevity and science-backed wellness
For those of us accustomed to beginning the day with a dip
there are few sights more gratifying than a pool with no one else in it
The one I’ve encountered at the end of a long
and darts of winter sun sneaking in at the other
I swim up to a glass wall only for it to slide open and usher me through a channel as if into a Bond villain’s lair
Little whorls of steam vaporise into the bracing atmosphere
a full moon lingers lazily in a flawless azure sky
and the sun seems to be doing in January what it’s supposed to do in June
On the hill opposite is the medieval old town of Fiuggi
With the sun’s rays trained on it like a spotlight
the multi-coloured hotchpotch of houses cascading down the hillside like bricks of Lego is as clear as crystal
is housed in a very grand building presiding over Fiuggi’s new town
Constructed as the Grand Hotel Palazzo della Fonte in 1913 in what was a fashionable spa town
it hosted the likes of Pablo Picasso and opera singer Enrico Caruso
who delivered impromptu performances in the ballroom
Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman might be found sauntering amidst the chestnut trees of the hotel’s 20-acre park
fully repurposed and ready to satisfy a seemingly insatiable 21st-century appetite for all things wellness
First impressions inside the capacious lobby
is all very Wes Anderson’s Grand Budapest Hotel-esque
Whilst much is preserved of the original Liberty (Italian art nouveau) features
the style template is relatively restrained
though the 102 lavishly appointed rooms and suites are no less cossetting for that
originally created for King Vittorio Emanuele (in residence at the time) to sign Italy’s participation in WWI into law
a new stylishly conceived 65,000 sq-ft spa and wellness complex is now the beating heart of the property
more concerned with cryotherapy than the baccarat table
Oprah turned up with a coterie of friends and declared it the best wellness spa she’d ever encountered
immediately generating 500 reservation requests in her wake
What Oprah’s disciples were seeking access to is one of the most impressively equipped and professionally operated medical wellness spas in Europe
ensconced 2,300 ft up in the wonderfully wild Apennine foothills
The air is purer than a convent full of nuns
and the waters have been healing visitors since Pope Boniface VIII arrived in the 14th century seeking a cure for his kidney stones
It’s possible to stay at Palazzo Fiuggi as if in a regular hotel
Though there are new three- and five-day programmes available
individually tailored stays of between one and three weeks are the norm
where the retreat’s maxim: for a longer life
is enthusiastically embraced in every direction
The promulgation of food as medicine is an integral component of Palazzo Fiuggi’s guiding ethos
It’s difficult to imagine a more suitable overseer of this culinary concept than Heinz Beck
Beck has long been revered as Rome’s first and (at the time of writing) the city’s only three-Michelin-starred chef
What is less known about this fascinating force of gastronomic nature is how deeply Beck delves into the scientific underpinnings of nutrition
conducting his own extensive research from a kitchen that resembles a mini laboratory
Having a chef delivering health-conscious cooking is one thing
Having a three-Michelin-starred maestro who’s also a leading authority on dietetic excellence is quite another
Beck used the downtime to create over 1,200 low-calorie recipes
The ones on the menu card placed at our table each day
that began with ginger shots and turmeric capsules
were all as delectable as they sounded: barley on zucchini scapece style and saffron infusion
spices marinated salmon bites with red chicory and pomegranate molasses
but Beck’s magical menus manage to be both adequate and delicious
though there are plans to introduce a slightly less stringent menu
albeit in a separate dining room to the majestic Sala Four Continents
with its frescoes and huge Murano glass chandeliers
I’m not sure I’d want the next table tucking into a T-bone while I’m still toiling away with the turmeric
Palazzo Fiuggi is all very Wes Anderson’s Grand Budapest Hotel-esque
The medical expertise and impressive array of state-of-the-art tech to hand
formulate an extremely detailed guest health profile
which is then used to craft individually tailored therapies
This might involve the workout movement lab in the former ballroom (surely one of the fanciest gyms anywhere)
or availing oneself of the numerous aesthetic options from Botox to oxygen therapy and chemical peels
Michelin-starred resident chef Heinz Beck delves deep into the scientific underpinnings of nutrition
Just being at Palazzo Fiuggi is inherently relaxing
It seems that 2025 marks a repositioning from wellness retreat to wellness spa
with less rigorous programmes sitting alongside the established ones
perfectly possible to spend each day being gently pummelled and pampered into a simpering lump of semi-comatose steak tartare
From being slid around like a big bar of soap on a hot slab in the hammam
to wrapped up in mud and left on a waterbed before being hosed down against a wall
to the massage on top of hot gravel culminating with the gonging of sound bowls placed on your abdomen; all bodywork bases are covered
They’re also expertly administered under the aegis of traditional Chinese medicinal practices
with a focus on meridians and pressure points
Thalassotherapy for optimum skin health involves floating around in a sequence of mineral-rich pools (à la the Dead Sea) and is encouraged daily
Afternoons can be whiled away around another semi-Olympic outdoor pool installed in 1929; the property claims to be the first hotel in Europe to have an outdoor pool
while tennis and padel courts are secreted away in the idyllic tranquillity of the hotel’s grounds
While readily accessible to Rome and its cornucopia of cultural attractions
it also remains ensconced in forested hills that fold away into a timeless beauty
The pressure cooker atmosphere of a city side trip
can sit in jarring contrast to the slow simmer of Palazzo Fiuggi’s luxuriating detoxification
while Palazzo Fiuggi also has an 18-hole golf course
Within an hour of Fiuggi are several exquisite historical hilltop towns
while perhaps not as compelling as a visit to the Eternal City
can be absorbed at a much less frenetic pace
renamed from Anticoli in 1910 in a rebranding of its spa-town celebrity
you enjoy immersing yourself in the day-to-day of such provincial towns
a stroll around Fiuggi makes for a simple yet satisfying change of scene
I can highly recommend propping up the bar at the enticing Gran Caffè Michelangelo as the locals gossip away (probably about you
as they’ll know everything going on up at the big house)
They serve croissants filled with a disarmingly delicious homemade pistachio cream to accompany coffee
I wouldn’t be succumbing to such temptations

Andrew HarrisAndrew Harris is a freelance travel writer
wellness pilgrimages to this rural town continue
now it’s much easier: The drive from Rome is only an hour
And the accommodations are decidedly more deluxe: The property
an art deco–style villa with 102 rooms and suites
is set on a hilltop within 8.5 acres of private grounds
Although it’s a medical spa staffed with multiple trained doctors
Guests dine in a grand space with a glass ceiling
white marble hallways lead to indoor fountains
And a 4,000-square-foot gym is housed in what was once a majestic ballroom
calling it the “best wellness retreat of her life.”
As a working mother of three, life for me was consistently challenging. And the last few months of work travel and unhealthy eating — while battling perimenopause — had taken its toll, so I decided to sign up for a four-day detox
Shortly after being escorted to my spacious suite — which featured an attached study, a lavish, king-sized bed covered in ivory Italian linens and a vast marble bathroom with a deep bathtub — I was brought to the ground floor spa reception area
the resident doctor administered several tests to assess the state of my health
my body fat percentage was slightly above average for my age
To alleviate the stress caused by my less-than-perfect results
the doctor sent me to soak in three mineral-and-salt-enriched pools within a light-filled room composed of floor-to-ceiling glass windows
The spa recommends that guests spend 30 minutes here daily to calm their nerves and help boost their immune system
to devise recipes that combined all the necessary nutrients with Michelin-star flavors — and little to no unhealthy fats
I ate porridge with honey and blueberry jam and yogurt topped with wild berries
I nibbled on a beautifully spiced grilled cauliflower and pumpkin gnocchi with spinach cream or roasted artichokes and zucchini followed by a flavorful minestrone soup
Dinner was a wholesome but savory affair: a filet of sea bass served with carrots and parsnip or amberjack sashimi on a curried red quinoa
I created over 900 recipes for Palazzo Fiuggi,” Beck tells me
adding that he has long been interested in how certain foods can combat inflammation and disease
“My computer is not just filled with recipes but also the latest scientific research.”
Every day, I took at least two movement classes. After just 20 minutes on the Icaros Virtual Reality machine — a high-tech device that worked muscles I didn’t even know I had — I felt like I had completed an Ironman marathon
My days were filled with pampering treatments
including a lifting facial massage that I swear took years off my face
I spent several tranquil hours daily relaxing on a comfy lounge chair in the glass-enclosed pool house
But perhaps the most incredible luxury of my four days at Palazzo Fiuggi was that I spoke to virtually no one except the friendly technicians
trainers and servers and only allowed myself to be on my phone for an hour a day
I felt physically and mentally lighter (I had lost three pounds)
I was ready — indeed inspired — to return to everyday life
committed to my new and improved wellness routine

The “family photo” of the G7 Foreign Ministers
the G7 Foreign Ministers will be discussing support for Ukraine
it is clear that we want to continue to take a joint stand for the security of Ukraine – and
Europe must assume more responsibility for security
will discuss the situation in the Middle East
joint support for Ukraine and the Indo-Pacific region
It is no accident that the meetings within the framework of the G7 are held some way away from the capital cities
the Foreign Ministers have two days in which to discuss central security and geopolitical challenges in a peaceful and confidential setting
More than 1000 days after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine
the G7 continues to stand unwaveringly alongside the Ukrainian people
The Foreign Ministers will discuss with their Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha how the G7 crisis team can continue to support Ukraine specifically in the third winter of the war
The G7 has raised 50 billion dollar in financial assistance for Ukraine
which will be available at the start of next year
Within the context of the G7 we now need to cooperate all the more closely
North Korea and China are providing increasing support for Russia’s war against Ukraine
That concerns the deployment of North Korean soldiers but also military equipment that is being made available to Russia
The spiral of violence in the Middle East set in motion with the massacre by Hamas on 7 October 2023 must be stopped
Hamas must release the hostages they are still holding captive
We are working for ceasefires in both Gaza and Lebanon
The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is disastrous
That is why we are doing everything in our power to ensure that more aid supplies reach the suffering population
The Foreign Ministers will also discuss what we can do within the context of the G7 to put an end to the suffering and find a way out of the conflict in the Middle East together with their counterparts from Egypt
the United Arab Emirates and the Secretary-General of the Arab League
who have also been invited to Fiuggi on Monday
Within the context of the G7 we work to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific region and the international law of the sea
for freedom of navigation is crucial to free trade
Europe’s security is closely linked to security in the Indo-Pacific
That is why we are continuing to expand our cooperation and partnerships in order to reduce dependencies as well as to diversify and safeguard our supply chains
Discussions in Fiuggi with the Foreign Ministers of India
South Korea and the Philippines will therefore focus not least on cooperation through trade agreements
cooperation in the area of raw materials and rare earths and in the context of the EU Global Gateway infrastructure initiative
the United Kingdom and the United States – the European Commission has observer status) provides a forum for informal – and thus very frank – exchange on current geopolitical challenges
The economically strong democracies in the group are linked by shared values
Acute foreign and security policy crises are frequently high on the agenda of the G7 crisis team
the G7 is not an international organisation and has no established structures
The Presidency of the G7 rotates annually among the members
The Presidency organises and prepares the ministerial meetings and the summit in particular
Germany held the Presidency in 2022; in 2023
Next year the baton will be passed on to Canada

the transformation of Fiuggi water under the visionary leadership of Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio is nothing short of remarkable
a sleeping beauty with 800 years of history
has been woken up and is undergoing a spectacular renaissance that serves as a blueprint for revitalizing heritage brands in the modern luxury landscape
the heir to the Luxottica empire and a rising star in Italian business
acquired a 72.5 percent stake in Acqua e Terme Fiuggi in 2024
To break Fiuggi out of what I often describe as the sea of sameness and elevate it to a symbol of Italian excellence and luxury lifestyle
This ambitious rebranding effort culminated in a star-studded showcase during the recent Milan Fashion Week
The Fiuggi event at Milan Fashion Week was a masterclass in luxury brand activation
Partnering with Vogue Italia for the #FiuggiLovedbyVogue project
the brand transformed Hangar Bicocca into a glamorous setting where fashion icons and celebrities like Romeo Beckham
Naomi Campbell and Ice Spice gathered to celebrate Fiuggi’s evolution
and wellness positioned Fiuggi at the intersection of luxury and lifestyle
far beyond its traditional role as a mineral water
Del Vecchio’s strategy for Fiuggi extends beyond high-profile events
minimalist bottle designs that maintain elegance while enhancing sustainability
This approach aligns perfectly with the evolving expectations of luxury consumers
particularly the environmentally conscious Gen Z demographic
But perhaps the most intriguing development is Fiuggi’s expansion into beauty
By leveraging its reputation for purity and wellness
Fiuggi is entering the lucrative luxury skincare market
This move echoes successful diversifications by other luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and demonstrates a deep understanding of the holistic nature of modern luxury consumption
As a business school professor of luxury strategy and someone who advises many of the leading luxury brands on their transformation and elevation
I have long emphasized the critical importance of storytelling and creating cultural capital in luxury branding
Fiuggi’s transformation under Del Vecchio’s leadership exemplifies these principles
it’s offering a slice of Italian excellence
a connection to centuries of tradition reimagined for the modern luxury consumer
This revitalization of Fiuggi comes at a crucial time for Italian luxury
My recent research has shown that the “Made in Italy” label
once a guarantee of quality and desirability
has lost some of its luster in the global luxury market
This concerning trend prompted me to co-found the Italian Mind Foundation with Marco Gianni
aiming to reinvigorate Italian luxury brands and make “Made in Italy” relevant again
The Italian Mind Foundation organized a groundbreaking event at the Sala Cinquecento in Florence
a venue adorned with Giorgio Vasari’s masterpieces
I presented my findings on the diminishing power of “Made in Italy,” sending shockwaves through the industry
highlighting the urgent need for Italian brands to move beyond traditional product-centric approaches and embrace storytelling and experiential luxury
Fiuggi was a part of the presentation and it’s wonderful to see how fast a brand can change if the right strategy is deployed
the brand story changed to a client-centric model and bold standout is generated
For this year’s event in June there is already a waiting list and I will present our latest research findings leading to a new blueprint for managing luxury brands
Fiuggi’s transformation under Del Vecchio’s guidance is a prime example of this critical approach for luxury brands and underscores his visionary leadership
By creating a brand story that extends beyond the product
The lessons for other luxury brands are clear and multifaceted
cultural capital has become the cornerstone of luxury strategy
It’s no longer sufficient to rely solely on product quality
brands must be able to formulate compelling narratives that resonate with consumers on a deeper level
Fiuggi’s successful transformation demonstrates that luxury is not just about what you sell
Cross-industry collaboration has emerged as a powerful tool in the luxury sector
Fiuggi’s partnership with the fashion world at Milan Fashion Week showcases how unexpected alliances can create buzz and relevance
propelling a brand into new spheres of influence
This strategy allows brands to tap into diverse consumer bases and create multifaceted brand identities
sustainability is not just an ethical choice but a luxury imperative
Fiuggi’s commitment to eco-friendly practices in its packaging and operations reflects a deep understanding of contemporary consumer values
Luxury brands must recognize that environmental consciousness is now an integral part of the luxury experience
can significantly strengthen a brand’s lifestyle proposition
Fiuggi’s expansion into beauty products is a strategic move that amplifies its core values of purity and wellness
This approach allows luxury brands to create a more comprehensive and immersive brand ecosystem and universe
Fiuggi’s success lies in its ability to embrace its rich heritage while boldly innovating for the future
This delicate balance is the hallmark of enduring luxury brands
By honoring its 800-year history while reimagining its role in contemporary luxury
Fiuggi sets a powerful example for other heritage brands seeking relevance in a rapidly evolving market
The transformation of Fiuggi under Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio’s leadership is a blueprint for the future of Italian luxury
As the industry faces challenges in maintaining its global prestige
The key lies in creating a compelling story
and offering experiences that resonate with the new generation of luxury consumers
For Italian luxury to reclaim its position at the pinnacle of global luxury
it must follow Fiuggi’s lead in breaking free from product-centricity and instead focus on crafting stories and experiences that inspire and create meaningful connections
Only then can “Made in Italy” once again become synonymous with unparalleled luxury and desirability
a global luxury strategy and creative brand activation firm
where he is the advisor to some of the most iconic luxury brands
He is recognized as a global top-five luxury key opinion leader
He serves as the executive professor of luxury strategy and pricing at Pepperdine University in Malibu and as a professor of luxury at New York University

I was certain I’d be charging ahead and leading the pack—but I found myself moving at the same pace as the other hikers
The new six day hiking program–where guests do daily nature hikes and eat Mediterranean meals around a shared table to stimulate connection–takes a more holistic approach to achieving a longer and better quality of life
There are books about it (Outlive by physician Peter Attia)
podcasts discussing it (Lifespan by genetics professor Dr David Sinclair) and Ted Talks by experts such as Susan Pinker and Dan Buettener dedicated to it
Influential people such as Jeff Bezos are investing heavily in research and treatments
and cutting edge regenerative medicine–like breakthroughs in stem cell therapy–frequently makes headlines
Also at Six Senses in Ibiza is restaurant The Beach Caves
where where IVs said to help with cell repair and regeneration are administered on arrival
When I first dipped into the hiking for longevity program, I was baffled as to why the simple act of hiking would supposedly make me live longer or age better. Especially considering all of the cutting-edge treatments readily available. Shouldn’t I be doing platelet-rich plasma injections? But when I asked one of my fellow hikers, who had done a similar trip in Malibu the previous year, why she chose to do this experience again, it finally sunk in.
After immersing herself in nature, sharing meals and making friends with fellow hikers, with whom she is still in contact today, she said “it just made me feel better for longer.” This is the point, after all.

There’s ‘something in the water’ at this wellness medical retreat
The phrase “there must be something in the water” really does apply at this wellness medical retreat
which proudly incorporates the therapeutic spring water from the nearby town of Fiuggi at the heart of its philosophy
which flows from its natural springs and mountains
has been used since the 14th century for its soothing properties
Available throughout the property – from your fully-stocked suite fridge to mealtimes – the water is said to have cured the ailments of people such as Pope Boniface VIII and Michelangelo
Described by American TV personality Oprah Winfrey as the “best wellness retreat of her life”

There is ample space to roam within Palazzo Fiuggi’s extensive private landscaped gardens
or you can go on a guided group hike or bike tour to explore the surrounding countryside
Maybe visit the five castles – Trevigliano
Trevi and Trisulti – or pop into quaint Fiuggi where you’ll find sweet little cafes and welcoming locals
Rome is just a 50-minute drive away and there are good transport links
it felt chic yet homely with sumptuous soft furnishings in neutrals and dashes of calming blues
The sofa and desk added to a home-from-home ambience
while the balcony offered beautiful views of the old town beneath
bathed in lush green foliage with a mountainous backdrop
Bespoke amenities such as the natural vegetable soap continued the wellness vibe
Accommodation ranges from the smaller “Charme” rooms to the 135 sqm “Royal Suite”
Murano crystal chandeliers and Italian marble
On the grounds there’s also the beautifully restored Villa Luisa
It’s also home to a semi-olympic pool
Fiuggi’s highly regarded mineralised water has a strong presence here
I really liked the “Fountain of Life” where you can grab a paper cup and drink it from source
followed by a magnesium enriched mineral pool; pillows are given to keep your head above the water and make floating more relaxing
There is a hammam and access to a Roman thermae and swimming pools
If you enjoy group classes then you’ll have a daily pick to choose from such as pranayama (an ancient breath technique)
The well-equipped 400 sqm “Movement Lab” houses Technogym equipment as well as interesting machines you may not have used before such as “Icaros VR” – essentially a video game that strengthens your body as you play
There is a golf course for those who cannot resist a round and for beauty concerns there’s the spa
There’s a Kneipp pool to get your circulation going
a sauna with great outdoor views and a relaxing “emotional shower” that boasts fragrance
An aromatherapy treatment using sensual oils induced a deep sense of relaxation
is a body contouring device which uses non-invasive waves of percussion and suction
resulting in the therapist claiming she could see more toned skin just after one session

Palazzo Fiuggi offers quite possibly the most beautifully executed cuisine in any wellness retreat you’ll find
The exquisite presentation is not a surprise when you consider the chef behind it – Michelin three-starred chef Heinz Beck
translates to the optimum balance of nutrition and flavour
My favourite dishes included grilled cauliflower with 20 flavours; pasta (yes
it’s on the menu) stuffed with burrata cream cheese
citrus pesto and tomato; and chocolate cannoli with wild berries sorbet
One of the best parts of the experience was even though the food is calorie counted and healthy
from the hearty breakfasts (which I couldn’t even finish) to the three-course lunches and four-course dinners
not to mention nourishing snacks like vitamin rich smoothies
The changing infused water served in the spa is a treat
green apple and lemongrass varieties being surprisingly delicious
If you want to revitalise yourself in spectacular surroundings and eat stunning
having the naturally therapeutic Fiuggi water on tap is something to value too
along with the cutting-edge medical knowledge and holistic philosophies behind the diverse treatments offerings
This idyllic Italian setting can be enjoyed with a wander into the nearby village or while having a dip in the pool
There is much to savour in this ritzy wellness medical retreat which no doubt will give you reason to rebook

Italy announced on Friday that the G7 countries will discuss the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant at the Foreign Ministers' meeting on Nov. 25.
"We respect and support the International Criminal Court, but we believe that its role should be legal rather than political," Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani told reporters at an event in Turin, northern Italy.
“We will review the documents to understand the reasons for the court's decision,” he added.
Tajani was commenting on the ICC's arrest warrants and the upcoming G7 Foreign Ministers' meeting, which Italy will host next week. The foreign ministers of the G7 nations, which include the US, Germany, France, Canada, UK, Italy, and Japan, will be held in the towns of Anagni and Fiuggi on Nov. 25-26, he added.
"The G7 Foreign Ministers will begin discussions in Fiuggi on Monday, and we will make decisions with our allies. This is the policy that our Prime Minister (Giorgia Meloni) has outlined, and I am tasked with carrying it out," he said.
On Thursday, the Hague-based court announced the arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant earlier in the day "for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed from at least 8 October 2023 until at least 20 May 2024," when ICC prosecutor Karim Khan sought the warrants.
In doing so, it also unanimously rejected Israel's challenges to jurisdiction under articles 18 and 19 of the Rome Statute.
The court said it "found reasonable grounds" to believe that Netanyahu and Gallant "bear criminal responsibility" for "the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare; and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts."
The warrants come as Israel’s genocidal offensive in the Gaza Strip recently entered its second year, having already killed 44,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children.
The Israeli onslaught has displaced almost the entire population of the territory amid an ongoing and deliberate blockade that has led to severe shortages of food, clean water, and medicine, pushing the population to the brink of starvation.
about six months before I'd ultimately visit the program
it did: by the time I was on a plane heading to Fiuggi
the central Italian city known for its natural springs where The Ranch Italy had set up shop
I wasn't the same person who'd said yes to the immersive four-day hiking and wellness program
I was hoping that wouldn't slow me down too much
If you have any experience with wellness retreats
The program first began as a weeklong luxury boot camp in Malibu
hiked for four to five hours a day in the Santa Monica Mountains
then spent the afternoon doing additional fitness and spa sessions
The Ranch has expanded upon their original weeklong program
offering different retreat lengths and personalized experiences as well
The Ranch has been opening properties in different locations
and the Hudson Valley (coming in spring 2024)
The Ranch Italy is housed at Palazzo Fiuggi
a world-class wellness medical spa that offers its own personalized programs of medical treatments
and holistic therapies for guests hoping to improve their well-being
The Ranch offers a weeklong experience and a newer four-day experience
they encourage you to go at your own pace and take as many breaks as needed
the hike isn't the last time you'll be sweating that day
After getting back to Palazzo Fiuggi and eating lunch
guests also have a strength workout and a yoga class to complete
Martino Dini @HRBut there is plenty of time for pampering
too — each day includes a sports massage and plenty of time to bum around the Palazzo's unreal Roman spa
I often found myself pinching myself during my stay at The Ranch Italy 4.0
the hotel was home to the best spa I'd ever set foot in
and with 16 other guests doing the program with me (each experience is limited to 25
Of the 17 guests attending my The Ranch 4.0 long weekend
I was probably one of the least experienced in the world of spas and fitness retreats
Many of the other guests had attended other The Ranch programs
and all had attended other similar resorts and retreats
another famous(ly intense) wellness program in California
But everyone agreed: the Palazzo Fiuggi was unparalleled
with views of old Fiuggi (the upper part of the city) and new Fiuggi (the lower
6,000-square-meter spa with three swimming pools
including healing thalassotherapy (seawater) pools
and (my favorite) a Kniepp pool that lets you alternate walking through water that's pleasantly warm
and somehow made my legs feel 80 percent fresher
And while The Ranch programming keeps guests busy
there's still plenty of time to book additional spa treatments and medical services during the day
relaxing in the property's pools or just sitting in a salt therapy room felt unbelievably restorative
especially when combined with the daily post-workout massage
Martino Dini @HRIt's also impossible to write about The Ranch Italy program without talking about the hikes
which took up the majority of each morning
each about 30 minutes from the Palazzo property
The hikes were varied: we scrambled up rocky ascents one day
trekked through forested canopies the next
and on one hike scaled mountain peaks that overlooked ancient monasteries
Guests are accompanied by local guides who are knowledgeable about the history of each area (and a great guide is an easy way to elevate a vacation)
And each trail is well-marked ahead of time
and each guest has their own walkie-talkie
The Ranch also means it when they urge you to go at your own pace. At 18 weeks pregnant, I was understandably apprehensive about the hikes. My doctor had cleared me, only suggesting that I take plenty of breaks, drink plenty of water, eat plenty of snacks, and aim to keep my heart rate generally under 140 bpm. (Worth noting: the advice about heart rate in pregnancy is considered outdated by some
but I was happy to play it safe and listen to my OB.) Considering that we were gaining significant elevation on each hike
that meant I was moving slow and sometimes turned around to head back to the cars early
But I never felt like I was being pressured to speed up
guests break off into their own pacing groups
with one guide sticking with the faster-paced groups and another bringing up the caboose
The other thing I loved about the experience was the small-group aspect
and most of the other guests came in groups of two to four
hiking and eating all their meals together
Given the grueling nature of the experience
we slowly began opening up about why we were doing the trip and what we hoped to get out of it
we were all swearing that our group was uniquely amazing — but I can't help but wonder if every group ends up feeling that way by the end of the trip
One of the things I love about The Ranch Italy 4.0 is how customizable it is
The Ranch began as a fitness retreat with a pretty big emphasis on weight loss — but the Italian program at least stresses at every turn that the program should be modified for your own goals
That said, the program's origins are still evident. It starts and ends with weigh-ins and measurement taking to see how your body changed over the four-day fitness program
which is entirely plant-based and mostly vegan
aims to provide about 1,400 calories a day
Oh, and there's absolutely no caffeine or alcohol provided on the property — as part of The Ranch program or at Palazzo Fiuggi
But I did hear at least one guest say she'd smuggled in some caffeine pills
The program leaders made it clear that guests could ask for as many additional portions of food as they needed each day
an offer I — and several other guests — took them up on without issue
But for anyone with a history of disordered eating
it might be a difficult program to take part in
Martino Dini @HRThe Ranch Italy also offers a complete blood panel that a doctor will later review with you and make suggestions for improving your health
but my husband participated and got a thick packet with information and recommendations for several supplements
which he ended up bringing to his regular GP once we were back at home
While the four-hour hikes might seem like a major barrier to entry
I can honestly say that I don't think they need to be
The program does ask all guests to take a physical and an electrocardiogram upon arrival to ensure they're able to take part in the fitness offerings safely
But the hikes can be as challenging or as chill as you make them
and you're always free to skip a day and hang out around the spa instead if you need some extra rest
And though the program did ask guests to prepare for the trip by starting to cut back on animal protein
and caffeine and embark on their own walking-based training program
I personally didn't do any of that (besides cutting the caffeine)
The Ranch Italy 4.0 is a great retreat for someone who's looking for a balance between an intense physical challenge and total pampering and relaxation
It's also a great place for someone who's looking to jump-start a new fitness routine
or needs to make some sort of change in their life
had recently gone through a breakup and quit drinking and smoking and seemed to be using the trip as another opportunity to reset and kick off his new life path
The Ranch program is full of language about committing to yourself and allowing yourself to grow — perfect for someone who's looking for a vacation that feels like a fresh start
The Ranch Italy 4.0 is $4,950-$5,800 for four days and five nights
depending on if you book a double or single room
But consider that the rate includes: accommodation
diagnostic testing and medical consultations
given the country became a republic within days of his abdication
Succession to the throne at the turn of the 20th century may have clipped his wings
but he always yearned for a safe haven to lick his political wounds
the monarch nicknamed ‘the Soldier King’ found the perfect spot: Palazzo della Fonte
The brainchild of Italian hospitality giant Lorenzo Giannuzzi
but in an environment that feels sumptuous rather than pseudo-clinical
While the palazzo readily conjures up images of past guests – Picasso setting up his easel in a wooded corner of its landscaped gardens
or Roberto Rossellini dancing cheek to cheek with Ingrid Bergman on the terrace under a moonlit sky – these days the nostalgic glow is underpinned by a scientific approach to wellbeing
Spa suiteNathalie KragGiannuzzi made his name with Forte Village in Sardinia
but Fiuggi’s £26 million renovation seems to set the dial even higher
It is a place of Corinthian columns and Renaissance statues
with vintage chess tables and books on great explorers suggesting a certain whimsical hedonism
But descend to the spa and the crisp white coats appear
The significant investment here isn’t just into MRI and CT scanners and sleep-monitoring machines
but in a wellness dream team to rival the best in the world
First among them is Fiuggi-born Professor David Della Morte Canosci, a man with enough energy to power a small nation, who still does ground-breaking research into neurology and internal medicine at universities in Miami and Rome
His team of eight specialist doctors have created programmes around longevity
optimum weight and the immune system; much of their work is based on the professor’s findings regarding the pathological pathways that link metabolic and cognitive diseases with the ageing process
Michelin-grade chef Heinz Beck fizzes with the possibilities of a research lab to analyse guests' DNA and chart metabolic changes in real-time
Dining room with Murano chandeliersNathalie KragIn the grandly theatrical dining room, where the triple-height ceiling is studded with handblown Murano chandeliers and adorned with original Galimberti frescoes, the food programme is similarly serious. German-born chef Heinz Beck won three Michelin stars at Rome’s famous La Pergola
but here he has worked with Professor Della Morte Canosci on 1,600 recipes that can be customised to suit guests’ needs – whether they want the surprisingly tasty 1,200-calorie-a-day Detox menu or an Intro line
which adds up to around 1,800 calories daily
Turbot with gazpachoNathalie KragIt is some of the best spa food I’ve tasted, and still manages to include delights such as rich chocolate cannelloni stuffed with red-fruit ice cream
Yet these days Beck speaks more like a food scientist than an award-winning chef
As compact and nimble as a rugby scrum-half
he fizzes with the creative possibilities of a planned research laboratory in the palazzo

there is a curious merging of nostalgic glamour and forward-thinking
with light flooding through picture windows
where the opera singer Enrico Caruso once gave impromptu performances under sparkling chandeliers

and has spent much of his career working with Serie A footballers at Lazio – though he swears he’s happier working on the stiff hips of less athletic clients like me (with better results than anyone before him)

with only the occasional pop of malachite green to interrupt their calming cream palette
I leave my window open and unshuttered so that I can wake to the sound of church bells and the sight of wispy tendrils of mist sneaking through the woods
And while the new spa is all contemporary sharp angles
it also pays respect to the town’s holistic heritage
Fiuggi has been famous for its healing springs since the Middle Ages
Pope Boniface VIII and Michelangelo both came here to drink the water
and Italian health authorities were still recommending it for renal conditions until 10 years ago
At the spa’s heart are three thalassotherapy baths in a striking glass-fronted lounge overlooking neatly clipped borders: one warm

This is a very palatial form of recharging
As my limbs melt into a bed of warmed quartz sand and my mind switches to sleep mode under the celestial influence of Tibetan singing bowls
I drift into the sort of regal oblivion that the Soldier King may once have enjoyed
There’s a gym in the former ballroom and three thalassotherapy pools
and a fleet of doctors – this programme contains ECGs
urinalysis and blood tests – alongside PT and yoga instructors
While Heinz Beck oversees the main Palazzo Fiuggi restaurant
other chefs have been trained by Ranch cook Meredith Haaz and turned their hand to making macadamia parmigiana
cauliflower burgers and the Ranch’s trademark granola
Herd Represented HorizWhat’s the wellness concept
you set off in minibuses to reach the trails
There are no distance goals per se; instead
participants walk for four hours a day (turning around at exactly two hours)
so a slow walker can cover 4km in two hours whereas the really keen or fit can cover over 12km a day
which buzz and fizz with mantras and prompts (“Hydrate
We begin the trek together but soon spread out; some chat in groups
others choose to plug in music and zone out among scenery – past rocks slathered in lichen
and drifts of leaf-fall alongside pirouetting blue butterflies
so most people stick to the programme – which includes a daily sports massage – although all the treatments at Fiuggi’s medical spa can be accessed
The most popular element here is the Kneipp pool
for which there were queues after every hike
the daily footcare station was a sight for sore eyes
but the expert practitioners bundled up our toes with ‘Hike Goo’ and plasters
Being nurtured endlessly by Californian motivational maxims at dinner-time talks is reassuring
Reality bites as you open your minibar on the first day and rows of Fiuggi water bottles stare back (the town has drawn health seekers for years who come for its healing waters)
Not even an apple or a milk miniature to quell the hunger pangs
Breakfasts such as granola and almond milk or a muffin with a lick of almond butter and sugar-free jam satisfy
Lunches and dinners – cauliflower pizza with macadamia ricotta and a hearty green minestrone
apart from one sluggish dip halfway through the week
this food is not easy to replicate at home
the ingredients list is bafflingly long and on my return I found it easier to return to a more accessible meat/fish and veg regime
including the famous mid-hike six almonds along with a pinch of restoring black salt
A more substantial apple slice with almond butter one afternoon was a godsend
windows that open wide to let in the fresh mountain air and sonorous chimes from the belltower
with hikers told to cover up their muddy mountain boots on entering and the thick-pile white carpets
piped classical music and robed guests gliding silently around seem designed to remove all extraneous noise or distraction
A cinema room provides respite for those who can keep their eyes open after dinner – and it’s a 10-minute stroll to the town
where bottles can be filled with spa water in the botanical gardens; the old town is a lung-blasting 30-minute hike (a breeze
On the last day we declare our gratitude for something. Mine was (in hindsight, rather embarrassingly) being free of my children for a few days
Others said it was the health of their family; many “put the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle together” in their home or work life on the many hours of trampling the trails alone
You are sent your stats afterwards and the proof is in the (lack of) pudding
I had lost 22cm off my midsection in total and 5kg
Six months on I have slightly adjusted my way of thinking
Two things I came away with is that it’s OK to have boring days sometimes – so I force myself to try a green juice diet twice a week; and it’s also fine to be a bit hungry
I also try to eat much earlier in the evenings

Wellness seekers have flocked to the Italian town of Fiuggi for centuries thanks to its mineral spring and it continues to draw tourists from all over the world with Europe’s largest medical spa at Palazzo Fiuggi
the landscape becomes green and mountainous
my husband Marco points out the path that the old tram used to take to bring passengers here from Rome
We’re only about 60 kilometers from the city
but we’re deep in the heart of rural Ciociaria
one of the most under-the-radar areas in Italy
The name Fiuggi may not ring any bells for the average person
but the town has drawn wellness seekers for centuries thanks to its mineral spring
Pope Boniface VIII and Michelangelo were fans
mineral-rich water is renowned as a diuretic with the power to cure kidney stones
So it’s no wonder that the Grand Hotel Palazzo Della Fonte sprung up there in 1913
King Vittorio Emanuele III sojourned at the hotel with the Italian royal family in 1914 and in the 1930s
When Forte Hotels took over the property in 2018, they not only rebranded it as Palazzo Fiuggi and restored the building to its original glory
transforming it into one of the best medical spas in the world
People come from all over the globe for their programs aimed at weight loss
“The spa measures 6,000 square meters. It’s the largest spa in Europe,” says wellness concierge Claudia
as she leads us down a white marble hallway toward the Roman baths
We stop to drink from the Fountain of Life
whose water is drawn from the town’s mineral spring
I meet with one of the doctors to discuss the objectives of my stay
I tell him I would like to lose some weight and
he asks me if I’d like to try their ‘Optimal Weight’ program
All the menus are designed by Michelin-starred chef Heinz Beck and calibrated with specific calorie and protein counts
The property has a no alcohol and no coffee policy
we drink water served in a decanter with VitaJuwel crystals and finish meals with herbal tea served from an elegant cart displaying an array of blends meant to aid digestion or promote restful sleep
I only have one full day here and I want to take advantage of everything the spa has to offer. So, after waiting an hour to digest our breakfast, my husband and I head to the spa, where we soak and steam and swim. Everything is optimized for maximum wellness – whether that’s a thalassotherapy pool enriched with salt and magnesium or an infrared sauna
I take a moment to stare out the glass windows
seeing a medieval town perched on a hill just across the green and mountainous valley
The rural location makes it feel all the more relaxing – like we’ve left the world behind for a day
Everything is optimized for maximum wellness
The other activities on my agenda are a session with ICAROS
a virtual reality experience aimed at core strength training
we take a trip up to the medieval part of Fiuggi
stumbling upon old stone buildings adorned with plants and a charming little restaurant with firewood stacked outside and a rustic setup with half-melted candles dripping wax down old wine bottles
I feel lighter and more relaxed – and the scale agrees
Is it a miracle or the effect of an impeccably designed wellness program

Guests come here to immerse themselves in wellness and medical programs looking for improved health
here’s why you’ll want to book a trip to Palazzo Fiuggi in 2022 to look and feel better
Since the early 14th century people have travelled to Fiuggi to enjoy the local water’s rich minerality and rejuvenating powers
“It’s best-known for restoring the kidneys and balancing the immune system
the mineral water has been scientifically proven to cleanse and purify,” says Palazzo Fiuggi’s spa and medical director
At Palazzo Fiuggi water is incorporated in every single program
Water-related experiences range from relaxing Thalasso therapy sessions to invigorating Scottish showers which promise to increase blood flow
part of enjoying Fiuggi’s famous water is drinking large amounts of it
When you stay at Palazzo Fiuggi there’s no alcohol or coffee served
instead you’ll be drinking still or sparkling Fiuggi water and an array of teas
While Palazzo Fiuggi has outstanding spa and beauty treatments
what really makes this property stand out is the amazing technology and scientific knowledge on premise
There are advanced programmes such as the Life Rewind and Deep Detox
ultrasound evaluation of the liver/abdomen
and Psammo therapy (an ancient practice which utilizes hot sand)
The on-site Movement Lab also features futuristic devices like Icaros VR machines and Reaxing Training
Icaros VR is an especially unique experience where you get simulate flying or diving through space using a headset and your body motion
You also get a great workout along the way
there are also programs that specifically address health issues that may have formed through COVID-19 at Palazzo Fiuggi
Their POST COVID 19 program launched this fall and evaluates the organs and systems that may have been weakened by Covid-19
“The program is designed to support and rebuild a resilient and improved immune system,” says Della Morte Canosci
“Our COVID treatments are very powerful as it’s a multi-organ approach method.”
Food plays a very important role during your stay at Palazzo Fiuggi and you have the chance to enjoy the nutritious creations of Michelin star chef Heinz Beck
He’s the mastermind behind multiple books that recognize the healing powers of food and brings this ethos to Palazzo Fiuggi
“With the ‘Heinz Beck Food Lines’ we wanted to create a new concept of food; not just a “diet” to follow but a nutritional model full of tastes
flavors and positive emotions for our guests,” says Beck
“Every Food Line is calibrated according to the needs of each guest and I strongly believe that having a healthy and balanced nutrition will help our organism against most of the recent disease that are caused by a bad and unbalanced nutrition.”
A stay at Palazzo Fiuggi helps guess re-assess their health
all while staying in a stunning historic property
The TimesOne of Europe’s hottest hotel openings this year is a fancy spa in a flamboyant Italian palace that promises to impart the secrets of weight loss and healthy ageing
But here’s where it gets interesting: I will not
be subjected to a miserable diet of bean sprouts and fresh air
enjoy pasta at lunch and devour four-course dinners — all devised by the chef behind Rome’s only three-Michelin-starred restaurant
Sceptical old me wonders if Ryan Gosling might also be on hand to place my napkin
because this sounds suspiciously like La-La land
Palazzo Fiuggi is an art nouveau beauty an hour outside the Italian capital
Its wedding-cake architecture is enhanced by a spectacular hilltop location
overlooking Fiuggi’s medieval old town and romantic wooded landscapes
The lobby is a masterclass in polished pink and cream marble
with sparkling crystal vases containing white hydrangeas so huge they deserve their own Instagram account
a statement staircase and a procession of smiling staff
It’s the kind of golden-era evocation that makes you instantly feel ten years younger
Palazzo Fiuggi and the surrounding countrysideTYSON SADLOI’m keener on getting 10lb lighter
its triple-height ceiling dotted with handblown Murano chandeliers
casting a spotlight on turn-of-the-20th-century frescoes — befitting in a palace built for Italian royalty to entertain high society
where celebrity guests have included Pablo Picasso and Ingrid Bergman
Three years ago this confection was bought by the Italian and Russian owners of Forte Village in Sardinia
an A-list resort beloved by the Beckhams and Abramoviches
After a £26 million transformation into a high-tech wellness retreat
Happily my dishes match their majestic setting
My first lunch starts with buttery spaghetti topped with redfish and courgette — there’s loads of it so
I don’t need my main of mullet and Mediterranean vegetables
a chocolate cannelloni stuffed with red-fruit gelato
A typical dinner might include vegetable gazpacho followed by marinated amberjack fish with camomile pesto and aubergine tartare
hay-cooked chicken breast with spinach and parsnip
then fruit salad with strawberry ice cream
Apart from the rice crackers — like chewing on carpet underlay — everything is mouthwatering
I decide it doesn’t matter that I am clearly not going to lose a single ounce
executive chef at the three-Michelin-starred La Pergola in Rome and the spa’s nutritional wizard
to explain how this culinary sleight of hand works
I can’t help noting that this Heinz is indeed full of beans
He asks the maitre d’ to check the time in Hanoi as he needs to make a call there
orders a coffee from a waitress and gives a plate heading to another guest the once-over
all while fist bumping me and asking how I’m enjoying my stay
“Our focus is food as medicine,” Beck says
“We harness the power of essential nutrients and micronutrients to create delicious meals that boost immunity and general health and achieve safe weight loss
One of the suites at Palazzo FuiggiTYSON SADLOThe other half of the duo is the medical director
who divides his time between the University of Miami
where he is associate professor of neurology; Tor Vergata University of Rome
where he is an associate professor of internal medicine; and Fiuggi
Together they devised the Food Line concept
creating 1,600 recipes that feature in the 1,200-calorie-a-day Detox and 1,800-calorie Intro plans
Their aim is to target fat reduction without adversely affecting muscle mass or resorting to punitive regimens
The pair are also busy overseeing the final touches to an on-site nutritional research laboratory
which will allow them to analyse guests’ DNA and chart changes to their body fat and metabolism during their stay
“People think it’s better to eat carbs at lunch than in the evening but
I choose a holistic health assessment: a bioresonance test
In the white marble and glass spa I settle in one of the 36 treatment rooms
electrodes attached to my body measuring my heart rate and calculating the health of my brain
It suggests my biological age is 21 years younger than my chronological age
so I don’t need to draw on the expertise of the spa’s eight doctors
or state-of-the-art technology including the shiny new MRI
Instead I am prescribed several treatments involving Ancient Mariner quantities of water
The palazzo’s roof terraceTYSON SADLOThe unpretentious town of Fiuggi has been famous for its healing springs since the Middle Ages — Pope Boniface VIII and Michelangelo believed that it cured their kidney stones
Until about ten years ago Italian health authorities were still recommending Fiuggi water for renal conditions
I bob about in the three super-buoyant thalassotherapy baths — one warm
one icy — where Fiuggi’s finest H2O is laced with sea salt
I also take the three-step Hydro Cure: a hydrotherapy bath with soothing “colour therapy”
followed by a wrap using Pompeii mud and concluding with a “Scottish shower”; so called because it leaves people a wee bit cranky
My therapist sluices the mud off me using a high-pressure hose
providing more insight than I need into how a Ford Fiesta feels in an old-fashioned car wash
The three swimming pools offer a more enjoyable submersion
You can swim from the huge indoor one to an equally huge outdoor one
with an enormous hot tub that overlooks Fiuggi old town’s caramel-coloured villas
this one Olympic-sized and guarded by ancient sequoia trees
padel tennis and a jogging trail if I tire of sunbathing
I listen to vibrational frequencies designed to slow down overactive minds while lying on a couch that delivers a surprisingly decent mechanical massage
I follow this with sound therapy in the yoga studio
just as a joyful peal from the town’s church bells subsides
I sleep brilliantly that night; while the decor downstairs is exuberant
I give my brain a proper workout in the former ballroom
now converted into possibly Europe’s swankiest gym
wearing a headset while balancing my shins and forearms on a “flying contraption”
Shifting my body to negotiate mountain peaks and steep ravines
cognitive skills and core strength to an exhausting extent
but a pre-workout stint in the cryotherapy chamber
where for three minutes I froze in vaporised nitrogen at temperatures below minus 100C
the rest of my gym work is more about posture than perspiration; the trainer Armando
who previously worked at Lazio football club
guides me through exacting hip and shoulder exercises
Early each morning I also take group yoga classes with Marya
In the palazzo’s heyday Sophia Loren might have gazed at the misty hills from this exact spot
It’s the only time we practise yoga outside
and the lack of fresh-air exercise otherwise is a disappointment
there is nowhere to dine alfresco — one of the great joys of being abroad
but in the meantime I have to sit at the same table in the same restaurant for every meal to ensure staff serve me the correct plan
This Groundhog Day dining scenario quickly becomes boring
I am also amazed that there are no mindfulness or meditation classes
or guided forest bathing in the palace’s lush parklands
And it was a shame that the sumptuous cinema
didn’t show a single film during my five-night stay
I get a Hollywood-style happy ending — I discover I have lost 3lb

I feel I should preface this review of The Ranch Italy at Palazzo Fiuggi with a disclaimer
I love nothing more than being sent off to some luxuriously punishing wellness retreat
The promise of emerging fully cleansed and rejuvenated is music to my ears
enabling me to happily accept any kind of restrictive programme with open arms and an open mind
Of course I had heard of The Ranch in Malibu
a fabulously revered holistic health retreat high up in the California hills promising to unlock a deeper level of wellness and body and mind awareness through very healthy vegan eating and vigorous early morning hiking
I knew that the programme had a major fan base
with people positively obsessed with its zen philosophy and of course its amazing results
I didn’t have to endure the transatlantic flight and inevitable killer jetlag to experience the benefits of this mythical place for myself
The Ranch programme has brilliantly set up camp in the ancient thermal town of Fiuggi about an hour outside of Rome
Renowned for its magical waters rich in all kinds of healing minerals
the town of Fiuggi is home to the Palazzo Fiuggi
a gorgeous hotel thats focus is on medical wellness
A retreat for people looking to immerse themselves in the restorative properties of the famous water as well as receive proper medical attention and overhaul their entire health system
its imposing white façade screams peaceful rejuvenation and serenity
The spa is of course the pièce de résistance
a Himalayan salt room and a wonderful thalassotherapy room where you are taken on a journey dipping in and out of various pools
They suggest arriving on a Sunday by 3pm in order to get organised for the week ahead
I like to enjoy my body overhaul with a side of silence and utter solitude
The mentality at the Ranch is reassuringly ‘you do you’ and the group serves as a wonderful support system for the more treacherous times
you eat three square meals with two snacks
one in the morning and one in the afternoon
I was never hungry but when I felt I needed a little extra
You'll receive your results two days later and go over them with a doctor
I found it immensely helpful to go over vitamin and mineral deficiencies with a professional and take an overview of my current health state
Your schedule is the same every day and establishing a routine is strangely calming
prep your hiking backpack with everything you need (including a filled-up three-litre water bag)
breakfast at six and then you set off for the four-hour hike of the day
Thankfully you hike for time and not distance
This is not a boot camp and no one is following you
counting your steps or monitoring how quickly you ascend the ever-steepening roads
They take their encouraging mentality very seriously and there are no barking orders here
This is your journey and however long it takes you to climb those hills is what it is
some of the hikes will test what you think you can do
They will push your limits and challenge your body and mind in ways I didn’t think possible
This is not for the faint of heart but again
not every hike was difficult and you can certainly take it easy if need be
Post-hike we returned to the hotel for a shower and perhaps a quick nap
lunch and then onto my favourite part of the day: the massage
it’s like a strong hug to your aching muscles and you walk out floating - almost forgetting the pain of a few hours earlier
There are also additional exercise classes in case you want to work yourself even harder
The strength core training class was fabulous
focusing on arms and abs and thankfully leaving your sore legs alone
You can of course add additional treatments to your schedule but I found the programme to be the perfect amount of activities
They strongly encourage letting go and switching off which I highly recommend
I barely looked at my phone and my week was the better for it
you will push the boundaries of what you thought you could do
And the bonding spirit of the community is contagious
I met wonderful people from all over the world
Healing Holidays (healingholidays.com 020 7529 8551) can arrange a 7-night programme from £7,599.00 per person sharing including transfers
full board accommodation and inclusions of the programme

while other travelers were sipping crisp Aperol spritzes by the sea on the Amalfi Coast or tucking into al dente cacio e pepe at trattorie in Rome
and taking my last steps to reach the peak of a mountain in the Lazio region of Italy
having just hiked four very steep miles to get there
a fellow Californian who called excitedly to his husband
already at the top with most of our 12-person group: “I got lost
I could make out the voices of our two last stragglers—one of whom
alternating between chatting and belting out Broadway-worthy renditions of “The Hills Are Alive” whenever we passed a particularly stunning vista
As I reached for the tiny paper bag with precisely six almonds we were given as a trail snack
I gazed at the postcard perfect rocky alpine meadows below—definitely worthy of breaking into song
The moment was interrupted by a crackle on the walkie-talkies we had each been given
it’s time to turn around if you haven’t already
and many of the daily hikes take place in the nearby Apennine Mountains
a small town in the mountainous countryside outside Rome
In the wide-ranging world of luxury wellness retreats
the Ranch has a reputation as the boot camp of the bunch
Started in 2010 and popular among Hollywood celebrities and wellness enthusiasts
the retreat invites guests to spend a week eating vegan and gluten-free food
and following a daily regimen that includes a rigorous hike and several workout classes (though it does build in time to unwind and recover as well)
the Ranch Italy in Fiuggi became their first permanent international retreat
and the team also announced plans to open the Ranch Hudson in New York in 2023
While the early wake-up calls and technical trails are certainly challenging
I was surprised by just how enjoyable the overall experience was
From the nourishing meals and convivial company
to the incredible Italian landscapes dotted with medieval architecture
the Ranch Italy was a wellness experience unlike any—in Italy or otherwise—and (shh) I only cheated once
Read on for a breakdown of the what it was like
but it continues to draw international and Italian visitors alike to drink the water straight from the source
where the healing qualities are said to be more potent
At the heart of it all sits the five-star hotel and wellness resort Palazzo Fiuggi
park-like property with tree-lined pathways and expansive gardens
the palatial hotel was the first on the European continent to have a swimming pool and was a place to see and be seen in the early 20th century—Italy’s King Vittorio Emanuele III and his family came here for an extended holiday in 1914
it remains a luxurious retreat focused on health and relaxation
as well as a new spa wing with indoor and outdoor lounge areas
and three saunas—my favorite was a steam sauna with floor-to-ceiling windows framing a picturesque view of Fiuggi’s old town
The Ranch Italy’s program is located at the Palazzo Fiuggi
a historic wellness retreat and five-star resort
velvet textiles and marbled bathrooms give it a sumptuous look and feel
they’re floor-to-ceiling doors that open onto a petite balcony—let in enough natural light to make the space feel bright
request a room with a view of the old city.)
The Palazzo is both a highlight of the Ranch Italy and a departure from the experience at Malibu
which is located on an isolated property with limited cell service and only used by Ranchers
in Fiuggi guests mix and mingle with other visitors
many of whom are there for one of the Palazzo’s separate wellness programs
Ranchers can also easily walk into the town of Fiuggi
which is at once a source of temptation and a pleasant break from the program
While some may prefer the distraction-free focus of Malibu
I loved the atmosphere of the Ranch Italy’s charming
small town locale and feeling like European royalty while indulging in the Palazzo’s world-class spa facilities
zigzag-shaped pool in which you walk in and out of alternately hot and cold water to revive tired legs
became a particular favorite among our group
Relaxing as this sounds, make no mistake, a week with the Ranch Italy is still a challenge. Without the help of any caffeine, all of us Ranchers began our day with a 5:30 a.m
followed by a half hour of stretching and breakfast
we gathered into vans to drive to a trailhead for that day’s hike
Although each day brought a different trail
we generally stayed in and around the Apennine Mountains—sometimes with an endpoint in mind
“It’s not about the distance,” said one of our guides
We want you to get your heart rate up while being outdoors.”
I woke up excited at the promise of time outdoors in this stunning corner of Italy
chain-smoking men with delicate straw baskets brimming with porcinis
and archaeological ruins such as an old mill and a centuries-old bell used by religious pilgrims to announce their entry to the town below
Views often featured dramatic cliffs or medieval hill-top towns
we came across bushes upon bushes of plump blackberries that I stopped to devour
Ranch staff encouraged us to challenge ourselves but also to go at whatever pace we needed
Case in point: On one of our more leisurely days
two other participants and I fell to the back of the group
“I’m not in the mood to race eight miles today,” said Ari
“I’m just happy to be outside.” As we walked and chatted
noted our relaxed pace and began to point out things along the trail
a quick detour scrambling over rocks to reach a cool enclave of moss-covered caves
our afternoons were filled with a weight-lifting class
and—thankfully—a relaxing massage and an hour or two of free time
we gathered at our dining table for dinner
“The hikes in Italy are more technical but it’s also a bit more laid-back
The Ranch Malibu felt much more like a boot camp.” Other veteran Ranchers agreed
also noting that the landscapes in Italy were more awe-inspiring and the main reason why they would recommend someone choosing Italy over Malibu
This lentil bowl is an example of a typical lunch at the Ranch Italy
“I really want to know what the Italian chef said when someone from Malibu came and told him this was supposed to be pizza,” one of the veteran Ranchers joked as we collectively stared at the cauliflower-based
vegetable-topped “pizza” that had been placed in front of us for dinner
such as the cauliflower pizza and a quinoa bowl with pickled vegetables
made an appearance on our table throughout our stay
it was the more Italian-inspired dishes that our group raved about the most: a flavorful vegan eggplant “lasagna” with macadamia nut cheese in a clear tomato broth
buckwheat ravioli alongside porcini mushrooms
creamy zuppa al carciofi (artichoke soup) that perfectly captured the vegetable’s earthy flavor
“how much you need to eat to stay healthy while losing weight isn’t the same for everyone,” says Michelle B
a primary care nurse practitioner in San Francisco
you may need more (or less) than that.” For this reason
additional portions are available upon request and fruit is readily available as a supplement
While the team will do their best to accommodate at any point
it is ideal to let the kitchen know you may want a larger portion at least a day before
the food is different from what you might eat on a typical Italian vacation
and I’d recommend planning your trip to include a few days in Rome
instead traveling directly to and from Fiuggi from the United States
with no additional stops in Italy like the rest of the Ranchers
FOMO got the best of me toward the end of my week there so
I slipped out to a nearby trattoria focused on local and organic products
to indulge in a bowl of house-made fini fini
Ranchers eat all three of their daily meals communally in the program’s light-filled dining room
those of us who hadn’t already left—onwards for postdetox debauchery in Rome
truffle hunting in the Italian countryside
having front-loaded the wine-and-pasta portion of their journeys—gathered around the long table that had become so familiar over the past week
over bowls of oatmeal with currants and house-made almond milk
announced their results from this arduous retreat
you’ll continue to lose more once you’re home.”
I left feeling inspired to resume lifting weights regularly
to stretch alongside my coffee each morning
and to be more mindful of how much alcohol I drink
we were all also encouraged to slowly reintegrate foods back into our diets
I was surprised by how much more full I felt after eating a seemingly reasonable amount of pasta
and the immediate headache that came with eating a processed protein bar
week-long program is often seen as a jumping-off point for many Ranchers
a way to jump-start healthy habits that are continued long after we return home—with unforgettable memories of the Apennines
and moments of laughter (and suffering) we shared with our fellow Ranchers to boot

this dazzling newcomer has taken up residence in one of Europe’s grandest palazzos
It was here that Vittorio Emanuele III of Italy signed the order that sanctioned the country’s participation in the First World War; that Pablo Picasso played baccarat in the frescoed halls; and that Ingrid Bergman spent her summers
Now sumptuously restored to the tune of €30 million
this art-nouveau property combines awe-inspiring grandeur – parquet floors
Carrara marble and Murano-glass chandeliers – with an iron-fisted approach to wellness
Seven-day programmes are firmly 21st century in design
with exhaustive diagnostics allowing the team to devise each guest a unique ‘journey’ that affects transformation in a matter of days
Hi-tech solutions range from cryotherapy to personalised infusions
binaural sleep therapies and one-to-one training in the former ballroom (climb aboard the Icaros
which helps improve core muscles via virtual reality)
while Quartz Vibra sound healing and warm-oil Abhyanga massages induce deep relaxation
with menus by stellar Italian chef Heinz Beck
Wine is conspicuously absent – the local Fiuggi spring water
long considered to have therapeutic properties

Taking time for your total well-being is a high priority in today’s go-go-go world
plan a visit to one — or all — of these four worldwide wellness destinations
my visit would be lacking in pasta and wine
but little did I know my experience at the Ranch Italy would be just as gratifying
which debuted in Malibu in 2010 and in Fiuggi 12 years later — there’s a Hudson Valley location coming this March — touts its results-driven ethos via an itinerary of intense workouts
and venture out for four-hour hikes through the surrounding Apennine Mountains
The trails varied in elevation and scenery — from open meadows bursting with forage-ready berries to hilltops crowned with former monasteries — but were all tough AF
there’s no pressure to “keep up” with others
the non-hiker who consistently caboosed the group

Afternoons were spent strength training, doing restorative yoga, recovering with deep-tissue massages, and enjoying everything Palazzo Fiuggi — the cutting-edge wellness medical resort out of which the Ranch operates — has to offer
There’s a contrast-therapy Kneipp pool (great for après-hike)
indoor/outdoor pools that incorporate the town’s historically healing waters
a Roman thermae with saunas and a Turkish bath
plus an optional diagnostic and bloodwork consult with the property’s on-site physician
The Ranch has a reputation for being a “detox” retreat
with three meals per day plus snacks that are vegan
nutrient-dense and anti-inflammatory — alcohol
artificial sugars and coffee are nowhere in sight
Though the daily menu is capped at 1,400 calories
the staff recognizes that not everyone’s goal is weight loss and is happy to serve second helpings upon request
(I couldn’t get enough of the eggplant parm with macadamia ricotta
There were folks in my group who were on their second
Though I’m still not — and probably never will be — a hiking gal
I came home feeling more energized than exhausted
but they reminded me that nature is good for the body
gut and soul — and that the views from the top are always worth the climb

50 safari-inspired tents dot a 200-acre expanse
ensuite bathrooms with coveted showers and Aesop products
and woodstoves to fire up on cooler nights

partake in spectacular stargazing — the resort adheres to International Dark Sky standards — plant-medicine walks guided by the resident certified herbalist
and refreshing dips in the hot and cool pools
sip on a cocktail or mocktail that draws on prickly pear and other local flora
or roast marshmallows over one of the firepits — all with a world-class view of that arch

Even the Italian food offered at Pesce features fresh anchovies and ingredients sourced from local farmers

taught by wellness ambassador Jose Pablo — it’s a blend of yoga stretching and martial arts — and the SurfX program
which will get you riding waves on the resort’s bay side
