Rome's Fiumicino Airport has found a novel way to use the empty land alongside runways - by covering it with 2.5 km of solar panels
Creating the largest airport solar farm anywhere in Europe
the electricity produced by the panels will be used within the airport and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels
The new installation will help Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport to reach its goal of being net zero by 2030
much sooner than most other airports are aiming for
which welcomes 50 million passengers a year
will be treated to a bird's eye view of the 55,000 solar panels
They are installed along the eastern side of runway three
The PV installation will reduce the airport’s CO2 emissions by more than 11,000 tons per year
equivalent to 1,477 homes' energy use for one year
This is just the start of Rome airport's plans for solar
They plan to install more panels around the airport over the next five years
ultimately hoping to produce enough energy to power 30,000 Italian homes
“The project shows how it is possible to reach the Net Zero Carbon goal and how decarbonisation can be achieved not through sacrifice but rather by becoming more modern and carbon neutral”
Italy’s Minister of Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin told Euronews Travel at the project launch
it's hoped that other unused land can be used for renewables
“The law includes all those areas like abandoned quarries or areas between highways and rail tracks,” said the Minister
“There are so many stretches of land in Italy that cannot be used for agriculture and that can be instead repurposed for these types of projects”
it takes a lot of energy to power an airport
hence why many have targets in place to cut their carbon emissions
By using airport land to generate renewable energy
airports can reduce their reliance on fossil fuels while contributing to the green transition
told Euronews Travel how the new solar farm will help the airport to become net zero
together with electric vehicles to move around the airport
This is just the first step in a process that will lead the airport to achieve net zero emissions in the next four to five years.”
Italian environmental NGO Legambiente welcomed the new solar farm
expressing hope that both the airport and Italy could become a model for growth of the green economy worldwide

Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) – a Corporate Partner of the FTE Digital, Innovation & Startup Hub – has inaugurated a new solar farm at Rome Fiumicino Airport
It is the largest self-consumption photovoltaic system at a European airport
as well as one of the largest systems in the world within an airport perimeter
The new infrastructure was designed by ADR and built by Enel in collaboration with Circet
following a European public tender after which the integrated contract was assigned
It extends for almost 2.5km and is made up of approximately 55,000 mono-crystalline silicon panels
it will allow the airport to produce more than 30 million kWh of electricity per year
“The launch of the new solar farm strengthens our commitment to the green transition and decarbonisation
with an infrastructure that is unique in the international airport landscape,” said Marco Troncone
“The energy independence that this new project ensures for our 5-star airport will significantly reduce the environmental impact of our operations
in line with the sustainable development model that we have been building for years – a model representing the first and essential prerequisite for the growth of the airport
significant step towards the airport reaching an installed power of 60 Mwp in the next five years
with the installation of additional solar farms within the perimeter of the current area
Such capacity would be enough to satisfy the annual energy needs of 30,000 Italian households for an entire year
or – in terms of electric cars – to fully charge more than one million vehicles
Approximately €50 million have been invested in total for the implementation of the project
which is part of a portfolio of initiatives for renewable energy generation and sustainable mobility with a financial commitment exceeding €200 milion
which will contribute to reducing the airport’s CO2 emissions by over 11,000 tonnes per year
is one of the most ambitious initiatives implemented by ADR
in the context of its strong commitment to energy transition and decarbonisation
with the goal of reaching Net Zero carbon in 2030

“It is in line with European directives and the authority’s guidelines
which have simplified the authorization processes
As chairman of Enac and of PACTA Foundation’s Institutional Committee
I would like to thank ADR and CEO Marco Troncone for their concrete contribution to overcoming ideological prejudice against the sector; for this project
representing an example of the synthesis between public and private achieved by Enac; for supporting a cohesive Italian system capable of developing the sector in a pioneering way; for all the other actions – also presented during COP29 in Baku
“The Solar Farm at Rome Fiumicino airport
which is Italy’s showcase in the world
confirms the sustainability objectives that we have included in the new PNA (the National Plan for Airports)
so as to reach the Net Zero Carbon Emissions objective already in 2030
We are proud to see that the principles of sustainability guide the infrastructural growth of the sector
making Italian airports models of excellence also in terms of environmental sustainability.”

The announcement was made during 'Inclusion and accessibility at the airport', an annual meeting with associations representing people with disabilities, held at the Innovation Hub of the Leonardo da Vinci airport
Designed to offer travellers greater autonomy and comfort
the new service is a further significant step towards a more accessible and safer airport experience guaranteed by ADR Assistance
the Aeroporti di Roma Group company that provides assistance to passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility
Once the destination has been set, the self-driving device will autonomously transport the passenger to the gate. Thanks to its smart sensors, it will avoid all obstacles and will deliver greater comfort and independence, manufacturer WHILL said
the chair will automatically return to its starting position
The new devices are available in the Terminal 3 boarding area and will cover the route to 14 gates (E11-E24) and three lounges in the non-Schengen area
Being the service launch with the first four devices in the first phase
ADR Assistance employees will manage operations through a touchscreen interface to select the passengers’ destination within the airport
Rome Fiumicino airport is one of the first in Europe to have tested and then adopted WHILL
which is already in use at major hubs in North America and Japan
“We are proud to introduce our service to Europe. WHILL offers personal transportation solutions and Mobility-as-a-Service, improving accessibility in public spaces worldwide. Operating in about 30 countries, we are excited to continue expanding our reach to new locations,” said Satoshi Sugie, co-founder and CEO of WHILL
“The WHILL self-driving devices represent another step forward in our vision of a more personalised airport experience
This new service actively enhances the accessibility of our infrastructure
making the customer journey smoother for those who need assistance
We re-main committed to improving travel accessibility
with innovation as a key driver in our ongoing efforts to rank among the world’s top airports for passenger satisfaction,” said Marina Maschio
Fiumicino is one of the first airports in Europe to deploy WHILL
Rome Fiumicino Airport has launched Europe’s largest self-consumption solar farm
generating 30 million kWh annually and advancing its commitment to sustainability and carbon neutrality by 2030
Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) inaugurated on 20 January 2024 its new Solar Farm, marking the largest self-consumption photovoltaic system at a European airport
Located along the eastern side of Runway 3
the system spans almost 2.5 km and comprises around 55,000 mono-crystalline silicon panels
The farm will produce over 30 million kWh of electricity annually
enough to power approximately 30,000 Italian households for a year
or charge over one million electric vehicles
“The launch of the new Solar Farm strengthens our commitment to the green transition and decarbonisation
The energy independence that this new project ensures for our 5-star airport will significantly reduce the environmental impact of our operations
in line with the sustainable development model that we have been building for years – a model representing the first and essential prerequisite for the growth of the airport
the region and the whole country,” said Marco Troncone
designed by ADR and built by Enel in collaboration with Circet
represents a significant step towards the airport’s goal of reaching 60 MWp in the next five years through additional solar farms
this initiative is part of a wider portfolio of renewable energy and sustainable mobility projects worth over €200m
The Solar Farm is expected to reduce the airport’s CO2 emissions by more than 11,000 tons annually
It is a key part of ADR’s commitment to energy transition and decarbonisation
with the aim of achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2030
20 years ahead of the aviation industry’s target
This project aligns with the ESG strategy of group leader Mundys
with objectives certified by the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi)
aiming to limit global warming to 1.5 Degrees Celsius
This ambitious target is supported by projects like today’s solar installation

With 55,000 silicon panels, the solar farm is also one of the largest such systems anywhere in the world within an airport perimeter. The solar farm was constructed along the eastern side of Runway 3 at Rome Fiumicino Airport
The new infrastructure was designed by ADR and built by Enel in collaboration with Circet
It extends for almost 2.5km and is made up of approximately 55,000 mono-crystalline silicon panels: with a capacity of 22MWp
significant step towards the airport reaching an installed power of 60Mwp in the next five years
or – in terms of electric cars – to fully charge approximately one million vehicles
Approximately €50m has been invested in the project
which is part of a portfolio of initiatives for renewable energy generation and sustainable mobility with a financial commitment exceeding €200m
The solar farm, which will help reduce Fiumicino’s CO2 emissions by over 11,000 tons per year, is one of the most ambitious initiatives implemented by ADR
which aims to reach net zero carbon in 2030 – a full 20 years ahead of the industry’s target
the new project will also enhance energy independence and resilience to market volatility
"The launch of the new solar farm strengthens our commitment to the green transition and decarbonisation
The energy independence that this new project ensures for our airport will significantly reduce the environmental impact of our operations
the region and the whole country," said Marco Troncone
CEO of Aeroporti di Roma writes exclusively for International Airport Review about their new solar farm and ambitious decarbonisation goals
Made of 55,000 silicon panels, the new plant is the biggest airport photovoltaic system in Europe and among the largest in the world. Designed by Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) and built by Enel
which will increase to 60 MWp over the next few years
with the integration of other structures – reaching a capacity that would be enough to satisfy 50% of current airport energy demand
the annual energy needs of 30,000 Italian households for an entire year
On 20 January 2025, Rome Fiumicino Airport’s (FCO) new solar farm was unveiled: located along the eastern side of Runway 3
it extends for almost 2.5km and represents a unique infrastructure in the international airport landscape
we invested approximately €50 million in implementing the project
part of a portfolio of initiatives for renewable energy generation and sustainable mobility with a financial commitment exceeding €200 million
Such investment testifies to the significance of the solar farm
one of our most ambitious projects on the path towards decarbonisation
with the goal of reaching net zero carbon in 2030 – a full 20 years ahead of the industry’s target
the solar plant will contribute to reducing the airport’s CO2 emissions by over 11,000 tons per year
while also enhancing resilience to market volatility and energy independence
thus significantly lowering the environmental impact of our operations
This is fully in line with the sustainable development model that we have been building for years
regarding it as the first and essential prerequisite for the growth of the airport
FCO’s solar farm will be connected to ‘Pioneer’
an innovative energy storage system co-financed by the European Union
Co-ordinated by ADR with Enel X and the Fraunhofer Research and Development Institute
Pioneer will use 786 ‘second-life’ batteries to store the energy produced during the day
This will optimise the airport’s energy performance
helping to ensure green energy for the terminals and reduce CO2 emissions
Thanks to its storage capacity with a power of 2.5 MW and a nominal capacity of 10 MWh
Pioneer represents a further step towards the airport’s energy independence and sustainability
Sustainable energy sources will contribute to energise more than 4,000 recharge points for vehicles
400 of those already in operation for all users as passengers and operators by the end of 2024
Another 600 will be operating by 2026 in the airside area by handlers and other airport stakeholders
Our solar farm is part of the ESG strategy outlined by our group leader Mundys
in line to limit global warming to 1.5°C; this infrastructure represents just the latest of the sustainable and green mobility-focused projects carried out by FCO
we inaugurated the new 3.5 kilometre-long ‘Pedalaria’ cycle path
connecting FCO with the city of Fiumicino in less than 15 minutes
and designed according to our territory’s peculiarities and needs: a land where the awareness of water management has been a pillar for ages
and where transportation nodes have always been crucial for economic development
Along the last stretch of the route to Terminal 3 passing through the Ancient Roman ports
Mediterranean plants from all the world’s continents were placed to evoke the concept of travel and connection between countries
it was decided to use draining materials such as ‘Idrodrain’ cement and recyclable wood mixes
innovative drainage channels and the ‘rain garden’
a plant filtering system designed to drain and manage the accumulation of rainwater
creating an environment that symbolically unites different cultures and reinforces the global identity of the airport
This is a sustainable project with an eye on increasing biodiversity
3000 sqm of meadows and 200 sqm of rain-gardens
sustainable development is rooted as well in green building and design
which are drivers for the roadmap to decarbonisation: every new project and existing terminal areas are designed to be green in coherence with the international green protocols requirements (LEED or Bream)
80% of the existing terminals will be entirely certified by those green protocols by 2030
environmental and economic aspects; we are fully committed to this path
and – through initiatives spanning from green finance to the creation of the Foundation for the Decarbonisation of Air Trasport – we will continue to work to lead the green transition of our sector
ready to keep serving with excellence the evolving and growing needs of Italy and European air travel

the Plaza Premium Lounge at Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO) is a great place for a respite for travelers
Its location could be ideal or inconvenient
but its amenities make for a quality lounge
I visited this lounge in Terminal 3 (in the international flights area) during a layover in Rome in mid-August 2023
There were 2 Plaza Premium Lounges at FCO. I visited the Terminal 3 lounge, near the E gates, accessible only to passengers on international flights leaving the Schengen Area
There’s another in Terminal 1 near the A gates for Schengen departures
I took the escalator near gates E1 to E4 to the upper floor
The Plaza Premium Lounge in Rome partners with several airlines to host business class passengers
as well as credit cards from banks outside the U.S
Additional corporate partners included Alpitour World

I followed the hallway to the largest seating area: the café area between the bar and the kitchen
The lounge didn’t suffer from a lack of seating
there were 7 types of seating in the lounge
Along the wall separating the café from the rest of the lounge were chairs with gray cushions and a few small
long counters with outlets looked like an ideal place to work
they were uncomfortable as the chairs were rigid metal and the cushions were thin
I moved to a more comfortable spot to check emails
octagonal privacy booths had cushioned seats with a small desk
rows of recliner chairs had lamps and were separated by end tables with built-in outlets
Curving around behind the bar were 2 more types of seating
The first had a handful of padded chairs with high dividers for privacy
These were excellent for focusing on work and included a small table
an open area had swivel chairs and a handful of sofas in a layout that reminded me of a hotel lobby
Even though I saw numerous people coming and going throughout my 3-hour stay
Along the bar was a salad bar with many ingredients to build a salad
Multiple hot dishes were at an open ledge from a window into the kitchen
The staff did an excellent job keeping these stocked
There were types of chicken and lots of kinds of pasta
Paper signs on the heat lamps overhead told the names of the dishes and indicated allergens
Along with a full-service bar in the center of the lounge
there were coffee machines at both ends of the lounge
there was also a self-serve drink station with Coca-Cola products on tap
Self-serve soft drinks near the buffet.Advertisement
neutral palette and wood and stone features
And the staff did an excellent job keeping them spotless
The lounge had 2 showers to the left of the café area
The cleaning staff had the key and supervised the line (which only grew to 2 people during my visit)
Booking a shower through the Plaza Premium site costs €22 (~$23)
I wouldn’t normally classify power outlets as an amenity
but Rome’s Plaza Premium Lounge deserves a special call-out
It was incredibly easy to find a spot to charge my devices
The lounge had its own private Wi-Fi network
I got average download speeds of 50 Mbps throughout my stay
Visitors were coming and going at all times
and that meant the bathrooms were used frequently
and food was vanishing into people’s mouths at a dizzying rate
But the bathrooms looked clean at all times
and dirty dishes disappeared from tables quickly
The employees were busy during my visit and did well keeping the lounge clean
Staff members at the front desk were friendly and efficient during check-in
Despite joining a line of 5 people when I arrived
Front desk employees also provided a hearty goodbye when I left
thanking me for visiting and wishing me a safe flight

prioritising the animals that are pregnant and sick
The cats will be sterilised and microchipped before being taken to the new cat shelter which is still being built
Rome airport management company Aeroporti di Roma (AdR) has given volunteers from animal rights associations special access to airside areas to feed the cats
AdR said it rejected "any accusation of mistreatment towards the felines"
stressing that it was working for "the protection of the animals' well-being and the simultaneous essential safeguarding of airport security
The daily management of the new cat shelter will be entrusted to the national animal protection group ENPA which stated: "The 80 cats of Fiumicino will finally have a safe place to live
with veterinary care and a suitable environment"
The issue of stray cats at Fiumicino is long-standing and has created problems for both the animals and airport authorities
with the situation worsening in recent months
Several cats have been killed by service vehicles and some of the stray felines have recently been spotted in the terminals among passengers

Italian services firm and dnata unit Airport Handling launched operations at Rome Fiumicino Airport in February
The start of operations at Rome marks a key strategic push for Airport Handling
which is well established in Milan after a decade of services at Linate and Malpensa airports
It comes after Airport Handling secured a seven-year ground handling licence at the Rome gateway
The firm has committed an investment of more than €20 million (US$22 million) in infrastructure and equipment at Fiumicino
where it will support operations of nearly 70,000 flights annually for 22 airline customers
Rome Fiumicino will become the second-largest station in dnata’s global ground handling network
Chief Executive of dnata Airport Operations
said: “Airport Handling’s expansion into Rome is an important step in our ongoing growth journey.”
The project represents a further step in the Mundys Group company's strategy to have a positive impact on the territory
was inaugurated with a bike ride in the presence of the mayor of Rome and the metropolitan city
The new path for pedestrians and cyclists starts from the main Roman airport and joins
the existing cycle path in the airport town
The cycle path – explains AdR – offers passengers
airport workers and citizens of Fiumicino the opportunity to live a unique experience among the natural beauties and archaeological areas
including the Ports of Claudius and Trajan
“It is another Jubilee work that is completed – said Gualtieri -
The cycle path passes through extraordinary places from a historical and naturalistic point of view – he added – but above all it gives an important contribution to sustainable mobility and decarbonization
Fiumicino airport is a destination for hundreds of thousands of passengers but also for 50 thousand people who work here
many come from Fiumicino and therefore allowing travel by bicycle
is very important from an environmental point of view and for tourism benefits”
The construction of the cycle path – continues AdR – represents a further step in the strategy of the company Mundys Group
in producing a positive impact on the territory
a crucial piece of the sustainable development plan of the airport
which includes new private investments of approximately 9 billion
“Fiumicino Airport – recalled the president of AdR
Vincenzo Nunziata – is particularly committed to sustainability and the cycle path is the emblem of all this
since it makes it easier for workers to reach the airport in a sustainable way
The cycle path is in fact the most recent initiative on sustainability promoted by AdR and therefore it was built with draining materials and with recyclable wood mixes
chosen to minimize the environmental impact
Drainage channels for water management have been created and Mediterranean plants from the five continents have been installed along the last stretch of the route towards Terminal 3
“It is also a symbolic project because it represents our way of understanding the airport
it integrates with the territory and improves the life of the operators
it is a new intermodality service between air transport and soft mobility that respects the environment”
a protocol has already been signed last November 5 between Enac and the Municipality of Rome to create a cycle/pedestrian path that runs along the perimeter of the Rome Urbe airport and that will connect the Urbe airport with the Fiumicino airport with an additional 10 kilometers of illuminated runway
"Today we are inaugurating an important section but within 2025 we will complete it by connecting the Urbe and Fiumicino airports"
Wizz Air has opened a new pilot training centre at Rome Fiumicino Airport, serving as the airline’s second centre after its Budapest-based facility.
The new centre is expected to train over 4,800 pilots a year and opened on 1 October 2024, inaugurated by Wizz Air’s CEO and CAE’s Vice President. It covers 2,500 square metres and provides briefing rooms, theoretical training spaces, and a simulator hall with two CAE A320 family full-flight simulators and a third due to arrive in 2025.
CAE’s simulators include features such as high-fidelity visuals, an immersive cockpit environment, and realistic flight dynamics, and they will allow Wizz Air’s pilots to undergo their annual training. The construction of the new Rome centre follows the success of the Budapest facility, which has provided 98,000 hours of flight training since it opened six years ago.
Currently, Wizz Air operates a fleet of over 206 Airbus A320 family aircraft.

is expected to bring up to 32 million tourists

Ryanair has said it would remove an aircraft from Rome Fiumicino and curb expansion at the Italian capital’s second airport due to rising costs and flight restrictions
The news comes as the city braces for an influx of additional tourists in a Jubilee year.
The carrier has long argued with Italian authorities over fees and regulatory issues. It said in a statement that airport costs were set to increase by 15% in Fiumicino and 44% in Ciampino by 2028, with local taxes also on the rise.
“These restrictive policies are damaging connectivity, tourism and jobs in Italy, particularly in Rome, where enhanced air connectivity is needed to support inbound tourism during the Jubilee year,” said Ryanair, the largest operator in the Italian market.
The Jubilee, a Holy Year for Roman Catholics, is expected to bring up to 32 million tourists to the Italian capital in 2025 according to the Vatican. That will put a severe strain on the city’s infrastructure and transport links, including airports.
It has undergone two years of traffic-clogging public works upgrades of transportation, hospital emergency rooms and other vital services, testing residents’ patience.
But only about a third of the 323 projects have been completed, and the city is already groaning under the weight of overtourism. Visitors have returned to Italy in droves following COVID-19, and the explosion of short-term vacation rentals has exacerbated a housing crisis.
Some of Rome’s prized monuments have reopened recently, including the Trevi Fountain. And the main Jubilee project was finished just in time: A pedestrian piazza linking Castel St. Angelo to the Via della Conciliazione, the main boulevard leading to St. Peter’s Square, was unveiled Monday.
Ryanair announced it would cut its investment by 100 million euros ($104 million) at Fiumicino. It also complained that limitations on the number of flights imposed on Ciampino due to the noise was damaging its business.
There was no immediate comment from Aeroporti di Roma, the company which operates the two airports.
“The Italian government continues to limit Rome’s tourism potential in view of the Jubilee 2025 by not removing the restrictive limit on flights at Ciampino, which could easily host twice as many daily flights as at present,” Ryanair executive Eddie Wilson said.
“If you look at it in the Italian context, we’ve got 65 million passengers here and that’s not just holidays, that’s a huge amount of domestic traffic ... and Italy just can’t seem to get enough of connectivity,” he told Reuters during a visit to Rome.

When the global COVID pandemic hit in 2021
As the aviation industry continues to learn lessons from the COVID travel shutdown
Rome’s Fiumicino Airport tasked Arup to find the safest way for passengers to move around the airport in the event of future restrictions on travel
Digital modelling tools help airport operators plan capacity by showing how passengers can best use terminal buildings
and Arup’s Digital MassMotion modelling software
updated to analyse the impact of physical distancing
was put through its paces for Aeroporti di Roma (ADR)
One of the 12 busiest airports in Europe before the pandemic
Rome Fiumicino reduced terminal capacity to meet distancing requirements
Now back up and running and with an eye to the future
ADR asked Arup to model a distance-appropriate check-in process in Fiumicino’s Terminal 3
Our consultants used crowd modelling software to create a 3D behavioural flow analysis of 25,000 passengers in the 20,000m² terminal
successfully proving that travellers can be processed while maintaining distance within the departure hall
our specialists modelled footfall across the terminal
helping ADR test mitigation scenarios by quantifying the time people spend within a set proximity from each other
To accurately reflect the airport environment
25,000 digital ‘passengers’ were assigned a check-in desk and programmed with characteristics such as desired personal space and age relevant walking speeds
They were then programmed to find their destination in a free environment
opting for the shortest route avoiding obstacles and maintaining physical distance from each other
Arup simulated a historically busy day at Fiumicino
comparing the simulated results with real data
The MassMotion data aligned with that collected by the airport
From the moment passengers enter the terminal until they board the aircraft
MassMotion analyses if physical distance can be maintained
creating 3D movies and 'heat maps’ to help ADR explore operational dynamics and using the results to identify where additional measures were needed.
Arup’s recommendations optimised existing infrastructure
Before the Fiumicino Airport analysis we had used MassMotion for a study at a leading Central European airport
Our task there had been to find safe solutions to accelerate the reopening of the country’s air travel
In just over two months we developed a digital twin of the terminal and created a physical distancing simulation using MassMotion
This demonstrated that with only small adjustments the airport could restart operations without putting staff or passengers at risk
Our solutions included rearranging queuing by closing areas to enable physical distancing and adjusting boarding and deplaning times to provide a safe environment for travellers
These measures helped the airport reopen and ramp up post-pandemic air traffic
Toronto and Milan worked together to deliver the project in four weeks
Footfall simulation videos showed Civil Aviation and Health Authorities that COVID-19 risk mitigation measures were effective for passenger traffic within terminals and provided a powerful tool for the public to understand that airports can be safe to use in any future pandemic
Modelling 25,000 passenger movements with MassMotion digital technology in a single day
Analysing the impact of social distancing through pandemic events
Designing an enhanced passenger experience through any circumstances
