heartfelt message about what the movie means to her as it opened in theaters Things you buy through our links may earn Vox Media a commission Marvel is back in critics’ good graces, and all Kevin Feige had to do was make an A24 movie. Or at least, as the movie’s “absolute cinema” teaser notes it takes a lot of people who have made stuff for A24 the latest iteration of the Marvel Cinematic Universe follows a team of anti-heroes – Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) and John Walker (Wyatt Russell) – as they fight through crises existential and otherwise The one thing that all the reviews appreciate no matter how much they liked the movie or thought it seemed like an indie drama the Thunderbolts* reviews every actress wants to hear Password must be at least 8 characters and contain: you’ll receive occasional updates and offers from New York The “Thunderbolts” star has built an impressive filmography over the past decade In honor of her return as Yelena Belova in “Thunderbolts*,” here are Pugh’s five best movies Perhaps the most underrated film that Florence Pugh has ever made Based on a novel by “Room” writer Emma Donoghue the film follows an English nurse (Pugh) who arrives in Ireland shortly after the country’s Great Famine to monitor and observe a young Irish girl who claims to be fasting and surviving without food longer than is believed to be possible As Pugh’s Elizabeth spends more time with Anna and within her puritanical community she comes to discover the power of faith and the importance of stories Bookended by a fourth-wall-breaking device that is designed to simultaneously disorient viewers and further immerse them in the superstitious world of its characters “The Wonder” is directed with patience and elegance by Sebastián Lelio and firmly anchored by Pugh’s magnetic compelling parts emerges a film about the lies we tell ourselves and the power they have to either destroy or save us Florence Pugh has a small but important role in “Dune: Part Two,” director Denis Villeneuve’s immaculately constructed adaptation of the second half of author Frank Herbert’s highly influential 1965 sci-fi novel The actress stars in the film as Princess Irulan the daughter of Emperor Shaddam IV (Christopher Walken) and promising initiate to the ever-scheming Bene Gesserit For most of “Dune: Part Two,” Irulan is recording the events of Arrakis and reacting from afar to Paul Atreides’ (Timothée Chalamet) unlikely return and rise to power She is brought front and center in the film’s chamber-piece finale when she agrees to marry Paul simultaneously cementing his ascension and also guaranteeing herself a powerful future Irulan will be a larger presence in Villeneuve’s planned “Dune: Messiah,” but Pugh still makes a lasting impression in “Dune: Part Two,” a film so big that it could have completely outshined a lesser actress especially one with such minimal screen time “Dune: Part Two” is further proof of Pugh’s innate star power She can do nothing but stand and look across the room at another person and she still manages to constantly hold your attention As is the case in “Dune: Part Two,” Florence Pugh does not have as large of a role in “Oppenheimer” as some of her other films No list about her best movies could reasonably exclude “Oppenheimer,” though that ranks solidly as writer-director Christopher Nolan’s most ambitious film — and perhaps his best Pugh has a supporting role in the Oscar-winning ensemble drama as Jean Tatlock the lover of Murphy’s Oppenheimer whose ties to the Communist Party come to haunt him almost as severely as their own commanding force of one of the film’s more underwritten characters — providing yet another face to the human costs of Oppenheimer’s work with the U.S She is one of many ghosts featured in “Oppenheimer,” a film that reaches some of the greatest most explosive highs of Nolan’s career and yet does not settle for sheer spectacle alone fear and grief lurking beneath the surface of “Oppenheimer,” and to watch the film is to find yourself slowly but surely sinking into it “Oppenheimer” is arguably a better, more impressive film than “Midsommar.” Pugh’s greater presence in “Midsommar,” however gives it the edge over “Oppenheimer” on a list like this Writer-director Ari Aster’s sun-soaked nightmarish follow-up to “Hereditary” stars Pugh as Dani a young American girl grieving the deaths of her entire family who travels with her emotionally distant noncommittal boyfriend (Jack Reynor) and a few of his friends to Sweden to celebrate the year’s midsummer festival in a remote village Dani’s grief is compounded by the ritualistic violence committed by the village’s cultish members who lead her (and viewers) into a finale of ridiculous Like Toni Collette in “Hereditary,” Pugh is asked to channel nerve-shredding levels of grief in “Midsommar” as her character edges closer and closer to a psyche-breaking point of extreme emotions She more than rises to meet the film’s challenges — giving a performance that constantly feels like it is teetering on the edge of complete emotional disintegration It is a fitting star turn for a film that also feels like it is constantly balancing on a knife’s edge between recognizable reality and alien An adaptation so good it makes one question whether it can ever be topped, Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” is an intelligent dense drama that feels both faithful to its source material and ripped straight out of Gerwig’s own heart and mind Based on Louisa May Alcott’s seminal 1868 novel the film charts two periods in the lives of the March sisters — Jo (Saoirse Ronan) Meg (Emma Watson) and Beth (Eliza Scanlen) — as they come of age and struggle with early adulthood in 19th century Massachusetts and New York City Blending the two separate sections of Alcott’s novel together visually dazzling film explores the pains of growing up the joys of sisterhood and the difficulty of finding your place in the world Ronan’s lead performance as Jo is a towering achievement — one arguably deserving of more awards recognition than it got — and the same is true of Pugh’s scene-stealing supporting turn as Amy She may have once been the exact opposite of a fan-favorite among “Little Women” readers but Amy is given both a biting intelligence and startling practicality by Gerwig and Pugh that make her impossible to dislike — or forget Powered by Florence corrected one of those blind spots with a session at Cape Solander Solander goes by many names. The fearsome wave was once named “Ours” by the Maroubra-based surf gang the Bra Boys it picked up the moniker “Cape Fear” from a Red Bull-sponsored event at the break (which has now moved on to Shipstern Bluff) “I paddled out here when I was like fourteen never got a wave,” explained Florence after the session “I was like ‘I need redemption.’ So stoked on the call up Kipp [Caddy] was like ‘Hey get over here this is going to be a crazy swell for Cape.'” Though his redemption session got off to an admittedly rough start due to multiple heavy wipeouts eventually he found his footing and tamed the monster sometimes T-shirts and trainers can veer on the side of boring Read on to discover how Florence Pugh shirked this problem this week they’re the pairing I instinctively reach for time and again And while there’s something to be said for not messing with a good thing every so often I feel the urge to breathe new life into this classic combination Keeping things casual, Pugh completed the outfit with white, straight-leg jeans cuffed at the ankle to spotlight her shoes she added a sunshine-yellow bag and a light brown baseball cap pulling together a look that was as playful as it was considered the ringer tee injected a distinctly ’70s energy into her outfit—something a plain white T-shirt just can’t replicate while the cobalt blue trainers inject a wash of colour and a playful component While Pugh’s exact trainers are now sold out there’s no shortage of vibrant blue kicks hitting the shelves this season ringer t-shirts are nearly as common as their bright white counterparts read on to find our edit of ringer t-shirts and blue trainers below The piping on the hem gives this simple tee a sportier Adidas' Tokyo trainers are a hit within fashion circles this season this classic tee also comes in five other shades The baby blue colour trend isn't showing any signs of slowing down Upgrading to a ringer tee is the easiest way to elevate your daily styling Autry's trainers are a fashion person's favourites Style this with simple blue jeans or pair with a bright white style à la Pugh Be quick—I can't see these staying in stock for long With an interest in uncovering the latest fashion trends, Natalie takes a leading role in identifying news for Who What Wear UK. There’s an impressive stoicism to her performance: she’s calm and collected, with a clear hint of sadness just below the surface. She doesn’t shriek once, at the most letting out a gasp when she comes face to face with one of Malevolent’s many deformed ghosts. That’s also a stylistic choice for Malevolent, as de Fleur makes a habit of holding each shot for an extra second or two, imbuing the movie with a sense of dread that never breaks. He also constructs some impressive shots, including an opening scene in which the camera is framed through the perspective of a young girl. Her father has hired the group to communicate with his dead wife, but as the scene plays out, you can’t see anyone’s faces until they crouch down to speak to the girl directly. "It's a huge deal that that theme was made with a Marvel budget," Pugh tells EW Sydney Bucksbaum is a writer at Entertainment Weekly covering all things pop culture – but TV is her one true love She currently lives in Los Angeles but grew up in Chicago so please don't make fun of her accent when it slips out By EMMA GUINNESS Florence Pugh has revealed that even her grandparents watch the sex scenes in her films and said they are simply another part of her career said she has gotten over any potential awkwardness this might cause as she has had sex many times on screen She recalled taking her grandparents to see the horror film Midsommar in the cinema in 2019 with her grandfather later saying that he would have never watched the film if she hadn't been in it Florence told NBC's Seth Meyers last month: 'I've also done many a sex scene in my career that’s part of the course of what my family watch when there was a naked body splayed over breathing organisms "How am I supposed to explain this to my grandparents?"' Midsommar centres around an American couple who join a cult after initially believing that they were attending a mid-summer festival in Sweden.  Florence Pugh has revealed that even her grandparents watch the sex scenes in her films and said they are simply another part of her career (pictured in 2023's Oppenheimer)  The actress (pictured in Marvel's Thunderbolts) said she has gotten over any potential awkwardness this might cause as she has had sex many times on screen  Recalling the initial awkwardness, Florence said she couldn't help but think about how bizarre it was to have those who have raised her watch her sex scenes. She joked: 'You watch it with all the people that you’ve taken and you’re like [mouthing], "Oh, f***".' However, the actress said it is not just her grandparents who enthusiastically support her films.  She added: 'My whole family are such brilliant supporters. They will be there come rain or shine.' The star said that even when she is unable to personally attend an important event like a premiere, her relations will go on her behalf.  Other notable sex scenes from Florence's now glittering career include the one that took place in 2023's Oppenheimer.  In the shoes of communist Jean Tatlock she gets down and dirty with Cillian Murphy's nuclear scientist character, beginning the intimacy by posing topless in a lounging hotel room chair. The actress has portrayed several different sexual scenarios in her career so far and said she particularly enjoyed simply being part of a love story.  Florence told NBC's Seth Meyers last month: 'I've also done many a sex scene in my career, and also unfortunately, that’s part of the course of what my family watch' Florence has portrayed several different sexual scenarios in her career so far and said she particularly enjoyed simply being part of a love story in 2024's We Live In Time This was the case in the 2024 romantic comedy We Live In Time where she starred alongside Andrew Garfield She told ELLE: 'I have always wanted to do a love story You actually get to understand the relationship and what point they’re at in the relationship Florence said the story depicted in the film was beautiful to watch back and at times it felt like she was really having a baby with her co-star centres around a 10-year love story that sees characters Almut and Tobias navigate a series of challenges The comments below have not been moderated By posting your comment you agree to our house rules Do you want to automatically post your MailOnline comments to your Facebook Timeline Your comment will be posted to MailOnline as usual We will automatically post your comment and a link to the news story to your Facebook timeline at the same time it is posted on MailOnline To do this we will link your MailOnline account with your Facebook account We’ll ask you to confirm this for your first post to Facebook You can choose on each post whether you would like it to be posted to Facebook. And then she really took it upon herself She would not take no for an answer with the studio." The actress added that she fought to keep the sequence when it was cut from the script during the development phase.  "It was just such a powerful way to start a movie because when I read it she's going to jump off a building because she doesn't want to be there anymore," Pugh explained.  Pugh says she was "furious" when the scene was cut and her complaints led to including and fine-tuning the scene.  it was such a dark and heavy way to start a movie about mental health because they obviously started looking into insuring me and it just wasn't going to happen." Florence Pugh is a committed chameleon a weepie in which her character is diagnosed with ovarian cancer All of this has given her essential “credibility” with Hollywood promoting Don’t Worry Darling at Venice International Film Festival she had a (possibly imagined) falling-out with the film’s director All she had to do to look “particularly unbothered” by the ensuing brouhaha was holding an Aperol spritz” that perfectly contrasted with her all-purple Valentino ensemble not to mention the nickname Miss Flo – leaked from a conversation between Wilde and the Don’t Worry Darling dropout Shia LaBeouf – made celebrity news around the world Venice !!! pic.twitter.com/UZFML98va9 Away from the red carpet and various headline-making diaphanous outfits, Pugh is a talent to reckon with. Her lead role in Lady Macbeth No wonder the biggest extended franchise on the planet wants her for its own Pugh has demonstrated her determination to go beyond the everyday demands of the film business [ Thunderbolts* review: Florence Pugh stars in the least bad of Marvel’s trilogy of obscure team-up flicksOpens in new window ] She now ups the ante in the opening sequence of Thunderbolts* the 36th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe wisecracking Russian assassin Yelena Belova from the Black Widow movie and the Hawkeye TV series Pugh jumps off the second-tallest building in the world the Merdeka 118 skyscraper in Kuala Lumpur – in real life Pestering Kevin Feige to let her take the Tom Cruise-style plunge was trickier than the actual jump and it was just such a cool way to start a movie,” Pugh says “I loved reading her voiceover as she steps off the edge they tried to get a few people to clear it and they were definite: ‘We are not throwing our number-one actress off a building.’ So it disappeared from the script you’re going to have to take this over the finish line yourself because we cannot be seen to make you do this And eventually I got an email from Kevin saying denotes that “the Avengers are not available”.) “We rehearsed a lot for this movie and dug into the script,” Harbour says “That’s something you don’t always get to do on a movie like this We had a full week of digging into these scenes The director really wanted our takes on the script Pugh’s character was introduced in Black Widow; raised in a fake Soviet-American family, she is “sister” to Natasha Romanov, the original Black Widow (who was played by Scarlett Johansson) Yelena trained as a child in the assassin programme known as the Red Room Yelena remained loyal to her training until she was freed from mind control “One of the things I loved about Yelena is that the job isn’t going to bear down on her,” Pugh says “But in the time since we’ve seen her last And she doesn’t have a great relationship with her dad any more it might not be respected in the right way; they might skip a few beats of her healing and I was just so grateful that we had a script that represented what maybe someone is feeling after trauma.” The latter will herald the beginning of Marvel’s Phase Six climaxed with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame Phase Four explored the multiverses of Spider-Man and Doctor Strange Phases Five and Six are slowly building towards something called Secret Wars But plans have had to change. Can the cred survive so much exposure to the Marvel Cinematic Universe? For now Pugh is happy to honour Black Widow on the promotional circuit and make those death-defying leaps. “She was loved by so many people before I touched it,” the actor says. “Whenever you put your spin on something that people love, of course you hope that people are going to like it. I think I stepped up to the challenge. And I loved coming back to her. She’s such a complicated character. She’s so unique. She’s really large as a character. “I really appreciated that everybody accepted the version that I‘ve brought to the table. On another such mission, Yelena, along with fellow covert operators Ghost and John Walker, are themselves the targets. They’re sent to take each other out. great (though As Red Guardian actor David Harbour explained in a press conference attended by GamesRadar+ Pugh actually changed that scene for the better "Florence came in with such strong ideas and such strong ownership of the character and of this arc," Harbour explained and so to have a big studio movie like this allow her that freedom – we even talked about the initial [scene] you're supposed to put her in the suit all the time 'I want to be in a weird sweatsuit and look terrible and just say that 'Something's wrong with me.' That allowance of us to have ownership: and we kept rewriting scenes and some of which very much aren't in the movie "There's a nice draft that Wyatt [Russell] and I have of a certain scene which we can't release to you that is absolutely terrible writing and yet we sat down all day and went for that," he continued no one's saying these words.' But I will say just the desire to have the input from us and the desire to have the input of our experience of our talent: not a lot of times on movie sets you get big movies that are asking that of you And there is such a frothing in the mouth quality of good actors to tell good stories and to reach for the deeper parts of themselves and to want to play those things covering all things film and TV for the site's Total Film and SFX sections I previously worked on the Disney magazines team at Immediate Media and Star Wars Galaxy titles after graduating with a BA in English.  you will then be prompted to enter your display name The themes of the movie are “universal” the film’s director also tells Entertainment Weekly Florence Pugh understands that “Thunderbolts*” is special The actress reprises her role as Yelena Belova in the anti-hero film The movie has strong themes about mental health and depression something Pugh described as “a huge deal.” “Oh my God, it’s massive,” she told Entertainment Weekly in an interview published Saturday. “It’s a huge deal It’s a huge deal that that theme was made with a Marvel budget and they cared enough about it to make it the main event And that is so important, so important for everybody right now.” Pugh added that she believes her Marvel debut the 2021 film “Black Widow,” touched on the same topics “It was the story of those girls and those women and the control that they were put under that really made me want to be a part of that story,” she explained loads of girls are going to go and watch this movie and they’re going to be educated and inspired and that’s so cool.’ And I feel the same with this they’re going to see themselves or their friends or their partners in it and it’s so wonderful to be able to make a movie for the masses that you know is going to be helpful.” who produced and directed the first season of “Beef,” told the outlet he intentionally set out to make a different kind of Marvel movie “These themes are not niche anymore; that we all struggle with this and that they were universal ideas,” Schreier said “And even if it felt scary for a big Netflix show or a Marvel movie to take that on and these aren’t things that we push away so much They’re things that everyone confronts.” Read the interview with Pugh and Schreir on Entertainment Weekly I’ve just learned that the actress actually took her grandparents to go see it back when it was in theaters and I can’t get enough of how they reacted she also took her grandparents to Midsommar I took my gran and my grandad to watch Midsommar in the cinemas I wouldn't have watched it if you weren't in it.’ I'm like The bit that was just so — I remember going like I forgot about that’ is when there's a naked body splayed over 'How am I supposed to explain this to my grandparents?' Pugh also said this about why she took them: and I knew the performance that I’d given and I knew how impactful that time shooting it was that I was like my family will want to see that.’ And then you watch it with all the people that you’ve taken but she remains “proud” of being part of it Thankfully for the actress and her family, her new movie Thunderbolts* is a lot more family-friendly she was the Managing Editor of the award-winning college paper where she specialized in writing/editing long-form features profiles and arts & entertainment coverage including her first run-in with movie reporting with a phone interview with Guillermo del Toro for Best Picture winner Now she's into covering YA television and movies All her writing should be read in Sarah Connor’s Terminator 2 voice over ‘That Was The First Time I’d Seen Him Nervous’: Mission: Impossible’s Simon Pegg Recalls The Stunt That Even Had Tom Cruise Feeling Uneasy President Trump Threatened Massive Tariffs On The Film Industry But There Are Some Basic Questions That Need To Be Answered Watch James Gunn’s Dog Go Crazy Watching Superman’s Krypto (Which Was Totally Based Off Him) The modern era of Hollywood only has a handful of true movie stars The definition of the role has changed fundamentally over the years as the studio system morphed and shifted the amount of undeniably bankable stars the studios actually want to invest in has dwindled But in the small handful that still remains Florence Pugh shines as one of the brightest and best movie stars we have today She is absolutely fearless in front of the camera and her taste in roles supports her obvious drive to find the most exciting and challenging ways to build her craft Pugh has already established herself as a risk-taker audiences are excited to show up when she makes the choice to lend her skills to a project she's rarely in something that doesn't deserve high praise ere are Florence Pugh's 10 best movies and TV shows as she is also a singer and performs the songs herself in the movie) Despite the few bumps in the road when it comes to the script and direction of this film there's no denying that Pugh absolutely steals the show with a powerhouse performance that is bound to make anyone with a soul crack and crumble under the weight of Allison's reality It feels truly unimaginable to endure circumstances that upending but Pugh's performance makes the horrors of it feel hauntingly real it elevates the film as a whole to a project worth seeing Pugh hasn't done much television over the course of her career she brings her particular sense of naturalism with her She very much did this on the 2018 BBC One series "The Little Drummer Girl," an espionage drama about a young actress (Pugh) who is recruited to infiltrate a Palestinian group fighting for their rights through dissent in Europe in 1979 It's a little known fact, despite how obviously easily accessible this information is, that Park Chan-Wook directed all six episodes of this miniseries, so you know the filmmaking is going to be top notch just from that detail alone. After all, this is the man behind "Oldboy" and "The Handmaiden" we're talking about With his slick style on display and a skilled cast consisting of not just Pugh but also Michael Shannon and Alexander Skarsgård Park Chan-Wook crafts a story just as compelling as any of his enticing films But Pugh's pitch perfect craftiness in the role really makes the show worth watching Stephen Merchant's 2019 sports biopic "Fighting With My Family" is a ton of fun The movie follows a young English woman named Saraya who aspires to become a professional wrestler working in the WWE Throughout this adaptation of the true story Merchant's directing is particularly pleasing in this film imbuing the project with a real sense of heart from both his treatment on the page and the generous and witty way he goes about telling this story But Pugh's performance is the real light in this project She comes to this unconventional role — how many times does one get to play a pro wrestler — with the kind of verve needed to make not just a fun time but something truly emotionally charged and memorable out of this lighthearted feel-good movie You already know how good Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" is. You've read the reviews, and you've seen how it absolutely dominated the 2024 Oscars (seven wins But it's hard not to think about Pugh's stirring performance in the film when you look back on its brilliance Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) and his conflicted existence as the inventor of the first nuclear weapons during World War II Pugh's role as Oppenheimer's headstrong mistress Jean Tatlock is crucial to the story especially as it exists in direct opposition to what appears to be weakness from his wife Kitty (Emily Blunt) Pugh's skill at shaping a woman who is full of conviction and strength but ultimately is not strong enough to wrestle Oppenheimer's demons is a major part of the foundation on which the lead character's emotional core rests It's a crucial role that says a lot — without saying it in it the dialogue per se — about Oppeneheimer's mental conflicts and his difficulties in overcoming them Part of Pugh's undeniable hard work in the film is her ability to seamlessly transition out of the story and hand over the relationship's hardest work to Kitty especially when it comes to one particularly tragic moment during Oppenheimer's lengthy government trials that is going to be Sebastián Leilo's 2022 film "The Wonder" is, well, something of a wonder particularly because of Pugh's involvement The movie follows an English nurse (Played by Pugh) who is sent to an Irish village after the Great Famine to observe a young girl who appears to be fasting indefinitely though the girl herself claims she can survive without food It is very much a story of faith and surrender and Pugh's turn as a witness shackled by both logic and mystery anchors the story in a sense of true wonder and curiosity which is crucial for things to play out as they do Pugh finds power in the delicate balance of being an outside observer and an active questioning believer her character feels like one we believe can take on such an existential dilemma — whether or not she is it may not have worked quite as well as it did Pugh's 2022 was not really marked by her performance in "The Wonder," however. It was more defined by her role in Olivia Wilde's sophomore feature "Don't Worry Darling," which premiered to a stir of drama in Venice that year The funny thing about all that ruckus is that Pugh's electric performance really surpasses all need for it a 1960s housewife living the life with her perfect husband (Harry Styles) in an idyllic desert community in California she starts to realize that all is not as it seems there and that sets her onto a tumultuous path of dark discovery Pugh is undoubtedly the core of this film, with the audience being able to suspend their disbelief for this story almost solely because of the strength of her performance. In fact, her most disturbing scene in the film (one that makes a big impression about halfway through the film) is a true testament to willingness to push herself in service of the work no matter how terrifying that might be both for the character and herself as an actress Her work is truly the glue that keeps this somewhat fantastical somewhat heavy-handed parable from falling apart at the seams — which makes the strength of her capabilities that much more apparent Sure, Pugh really stands out in fun roles, but one could definitely argue she's even better known for the roles that absolutely crush us. The heartbreaking 2024 romantic drama "We Live In Time" is definitely one of those, to the point where director John Crowley called her performance a "heat-seeking missile." Pugh stars as Almut a former figure skater turned chef who meets a man named Tobias (Andrew Garfield) and spends a decade in and out of love with him Using the conventions of a nonlinear narrative to their advantage Crowley and writer Nick Payne craft a truly tragic tale of unconditional love that Pugh's talents fit so beautifully into This is the kind of role Pugh was born to play though one could say that about so many of her wonderful parts But she really does blossom on screen when she taps into her raw emotions and finds something beautiful in the tragedy This film certainly isn't the first time Pugh did just that Out of all the "Little Women" movie adaptations Greta Gerwig's 2019 retelling is perhaps the most universally beloved reimagination of the classic there is still so much to love about this movie In a film with wall-to-wall memorable performances that stick out beautifully in the pantheon of modern filmmaking doing some of her most memorable work as Amy March the youngest and perhaps most heartbreaking of the March sisters — and definitely the one who has garnered the worst rep throughout history "Little Women" follows four sisters living in Massachusetts during the 19th century and how each of them follow a different path in their lives but remain tethered by their familial bond Pugh's command over Amy's yearning to escape the shadow of her sisters is much of what drives the somewhat silent conflict between her and her second eldest sister Jo (Saoirse Ronan) Ronan contributes equally to the power of the push and pull between them as does Timothée Chalamet as family friend Laurie but there's something about Pugh's imperfect innocence in this one that really makes the whole story feel so lived in and true She was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for this role Here's one she should've been nominated for... you know, if the Oscars gave horror some respect more often than it has Ari Aster's 2019 sophomore feature "Midsommar" is perhaps Pugh's most recognizable movie at this point But there's certainly a reason why horror fans love it and a pretty diabolically wonderful script But Pugh's performance couldn't be more engaging and relatable and that's the main reason why audiences are still coming back to this movie time and time again a young woman in emotional turmoil after both her parents and sister die she takes a trip to a seemingly benign cult compound in Sweden with her boyfriend and his college buddies but many of the cracks in her life start to become too treacherous to ignore as a sinister plot underscores the decay Simply put, Pugh sold the outlandish terrors the film offered in enticing technicolor and grounded them in real unbridled emotional terror, giving Aster the foundation he needed to make horror out of a not-so-scary real life festival Her capacity for grief in this film is an utter masterclass for actors and she makes some of the most difficult things about performance — namely her ability to pour her emotions out for all to see like she was simply opening the handle on a sink — look easy This is the film that made her the star she is today and it makes sense that a film as good as her would put her on the map Though a 2014 drama called "The Falling" is technically Pugh's feature film debut, her lore, so to speak, deems the 2016 period thriller "Lady Macbeth" as her true first foray onto the scene Maybe it's because the film is truly excellent in all aspects Or maybe it's because the film feels worthy of her immense talents and it's somewhat cosmically prepared to show them off at full tilt so early in her career This is a mammoth of a role for such a young performer — Pugh was around 19 years old at the time of filming — and she devours it with such confidence The movie follows a young woman named Katherine (Pugh) who feels so stifled in her loveless marriage to a much older man (Paul Hilton) that she runs into the arms of a stable boy (Cosmo Jarvis) and undergoes a dark transformation of the soul Though it took a few more years for Pugh to fully become a name to watch in the mainstream it's clear just in this performance that she was on a path to generational recognition as an actress something she very much has gone on to receive both if you like excellent movies and if you like Florence Pugh if there's only one movie of her filmography you seek out Check out the best work from ‘Thunderbolts’ star Florence Pugh Now that “Thunderbolts” has hit theaters today there’s no better time to revisit the filmography of Florence Pugh who is one of my favorite actresses working today I really admire her emotional range and charming screen presence and it's probably why Pugh has become a standout in everything from psychological thrillers to historical dramas While some may have discovered her as the fierce and funny Yelena Belova in ”Black Widow,” Pugh’s career runs far deeper than her Marvel debut She’s delivered searing performances in indie breakouts and earned an Oscar nomination all before the age of 30 “Midsommar” is one of the most haunting horror movies I’ve ever seen and it was actually the project that first introduced me to Florence Pugh Even from that single performance alone she became one of my favorites actresses Her emotionally raw acting stuck with me and still feels engraved in my mind Pugh fully inhabits the role of a grieving woman unraveling in the most surreal and sunlit nightmare imaginable The movie itself is a disorienting blend of folk horror and grief but it’s Pugh’s commitment to portraying aching trauma that keeps it grounded When Dani (Pugh) joins her boyfriend and his friends on a trip to a remote Swedish commune she hopes to escape her grief after a horrific family tragedy But the seemingly idyllic setting quickly devolves into a disturbing pagan ritual Pugh took on the role of Amy March in “Little Women” and completely redefined a character long considered the least likable of the March sisters She brought Amy’s ambition and vulnerability to life in a way that felt fresh and entirely human Her performance in this period drama actually earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress marking a major milestone in her already impressive career Based on Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel “Little Women” follows the lives of the four March sisters — Jo (Saoirse Ronan) and Amy (Pugh) — as they come of age in post-Civil War America capturing the struggles and triumphs of womanhood and family Pugh really does flex her acting skills in sad movies and that’s all because of her impressive emotional range She brings warmth and quiet strength to “We Live in Time,” a romantic drama that trades sweeping gestures for the intimate rhythms of real life Pugh once again proves her gift for emotional nuance portraying a woman navigating love and the unexpected turns of time The movie doesn’t rely on melodrama but instead trusts its actors to carry the story through natural chemistry “We Live in Time” follows Almut (Pugh) and Tobias (Garfield) two strangers whose chance encounter leads to an unexpected and life-altering romance they must confront a series of life’s challenges — parenthood and the shifting passage of time — learning how to hold onto love even as the years reshape them One of Pugh’s most overlooked movies has to be “Fighting with My Family.” Based on the true story of WWE wrestler Paige the movie is an underdog sports dramedy with a big emotional core Pugh used this chance to show a totally different side of her talent — one that’s lighter It’s one of her most accessible performances and a great entry point for anyone new to her work She makes you root for Saraya not just as a wrestler but as a young woman trying to carve out her place in the world on her own terms Saraya “Paige” Bevis (Pugh) comes from a tight-knit wrestling family in England When she gets the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to try out for WWE Paige struggles to stay true to herself while facing the competitive world of professional wrestling “Lady Macbeth” is the movie that really put Pugh on the map a young woman stuck in a loveless marriage in 19th-century England What starts as a story about a woman trapped by society’s expectations quickly turns into something much darker I’m certain she’ll captivate almost anyone watching this for the first time as her performance is so intense it feels like a period drama version of “The Bad Seed” meets “Fatal Attraction.” Katherine (Pugh) finds herself drawn into a passionate affair with a laborer on the estate As the two conspire to break free from the oppressive world around them Katherine takes increasingly ruthless steps to reclaim control which basically means watching the best movies and TV shows and then writing about them she worked as a freelance writer for Screen Rant and Bough Digital both of which sparked her interest in the entertainment industry When she’s not writing about the latest movies and TV shows she’s either playing horror video games on her PC or working on her first novel Subscribe to BuzzFeed Daily NewsletterCaret DownFlorence Pugh And David Harbour Just Did An
