Patients and relatives turn on doctors and nurses
with 16,000 reports of physical and verbal assaults in 2023 alone
Doctors’ and nurses’ unions in Italy have called for authorities to consider bringing the army into hospitals in response to an increase in attacks by patients and their relatives that provoked outrage across the country
In one of the latest, captured on video and widely shared on social media, doctors and nurses were forced to barricade themselves in a room at the Policlinico hospital in Foggia
on Friday after about 50 relatives and friends of a 23-year-old woman who died after an emergency operation turned on medical staff
with bloodstains visible on the emergency room floor
Antonio De Palma, the national president of the Nursing Up union, said he was shocked at the surge in violence. “In the past 10 years, such an escalation of brutality had never been documented,” he said
“We have never reached such a level of danger and aggressiveness
We urgently call on the minister of the interior to address the seriousness of this situation
It has become imperative to consider deploying the army in healthcare facilities
The National Federation of Orders for Nursing Professions (Fnopi) condemned the “criminal actions” against healthcare personnel as “intolerable” and called for protection from the authorities to ensure a safe working environment
Loreto Gesualdo, the president of the Italian Federation of Medical-Scientific Societies (Fism), has proposed legislation to suspend free access to medical care for three years for those who assault healthcare workers or damage health facilities
Fism reported more than 16,000 verbal and physical attacks against doctors and nurses in Italian hospitals in 2023 alone
Last year, a 62-year-old man was sentenced to 16 years in prison for murdering a doctor in 2022 with an axe outside the Policlinico San Donato hospital in Milan because
the treatments he had prescribed had been useless
The director of the Policlinico hospital in Foggia
told the Guardian the facility was now on the brink of closure
there is a real risk of having to shut down the emergency department due to the dwindling numbers of doctors
the closure of other departments could follow
We ask for the patients and their families to be patient and consider that our doctors and nurses are operating under immense stress caused by the widespread shortage of medical professionals in our hospital
If we add to this the fear among our healthcare workers
we risk losing even more health workers willing to work in our facility.”
Free weekly newsletterThe most pressing stories and debates for Europeans – from identity to economics to the environment
Many of the assaults are caused by the shortage of hospital staff and family members’ frustration at the resulting long waiting times for surgery and consultations
According to the doctors’ union ANAAO
until 2022 almost half of positions in emergency medicine were vacant
Salary-cap legislation over the past two decades to curb public spending has kept salaries low
Spending plans published by Giorgia Meloni’s government envisage further healthcare cuts
In 2023, according to the Forum delle Società Scientifiche dei Clinici Ospedalieri e Universitari Italiani, there was a shortage of approximately 30,000 doctors in Italy
111 hospitals and 113 emergency rooms closed

scholars have focused more on changes in higher education
leading to significant insights into the working lives of academics and certain related processes
The interest in academia is also justified by the role of universities as institutions that promote health and well-being
This study aims to identify social factors that can enhance the well-being of academic workers (lecturers and technical–administrative staff)
highlighting how processes linked to social identity
based on the dynamics of identification with a territory or an organization
can serve as resources that promote well-being
Researchers conducted the survey on 198 workers at the University of Foggia (South Italy)
Correlation and reliability assessments were first performed between the variables
The goodness of fit of the model seems to be sufficient
were positively and significantly correlated with general well-being
Findings of the study demonstrated that for teaching and technical–administrative staff
among the key components for enhancing well-being in the academic setting was the social dimension of relationships
understood both inside and outside the university
implementing and strengthening relations with the social actors involved
as well as on the sense of belonging and identification with an organization
can have precise impact in enhancing well-being
prior research concentrated on either interactional or situational dimensions (e.g.
while there are no studies examining the individual dimension and perception in relation to social identity within the framework of work-organizational context
The latter aids in defining a person’s affective and belonging characteristics that can potentially stimulate energies and advance resources
this study aims to identify social factors that can support a broader understanding of academic workers’ well-being (e.g.
lecturers and technical–administrative staff)
highlighting how processes related to social identity in workers
The research was conducted in the University of Foggia
The University of Foggia represents a very significant role for the area
not least because of the problems that have always plagued it
successive heads and rectors have sought to establish vibrant communities
the main goals of the university for the benefit of the region emerged
organizational well-being and governance models
The role of the university for the territory was further reaffirmed by Head of State Mattarella
who speaking in attendance at the opening of the previous academic year emphasized the significance of forming consciences to combat organized crime
the University of Foggia is playing a central role for the territory
All institutions must work in synergy to offer Foggia a different future
fosters the cultural dynamism and zeal required to combat crime
protecting the well-being of the academic community
is essential to the idea of offering a supportive foundation in the university’s operation in the area
this study aims to demonstrate how specific factors of social identification (with the university
and with Foggia) can serve as catalysts to enhance academic well-being
or living there for significantly long periods
anthropological and psychological qualities that
transferring from the perception of the city to that of its people
Given the absence of a more thorough examination of the connection between this construct and overall well-being
the initial research hypothesis is as follows:
H1: Place attachment improves general academic workers’ well-being
in line with theoretical conceptualizations of social identity and social exchange
factors such as identification and social relationships are significant in determining work-related well-being outcomes such as engagement
The study was carried out on workers in a longitudinal method; consequently
it appears that this position is also significant from a different angle in terms of time periods
The aforementioned studies indicate that phenomena related to social identity are also capable of explaining processes of well-being improvement
providing evidence for their potential investigation and analysis as antecedents (rather than mediators) of overall well-being
they would be viewed as employment resources
Furthermore, employees who strongly identify with their work are more likely to be dedicated to it (Loi et al., 2014; Karanika-Murray et al., 2015). Individuals therefore feel more personally invested and tend to achieve more satisfactory outcomes, both individually and for the organization through performance (Carmeli et al., 2007)
the second research hypothesis is as follows:
H2: Organizational identification has a positive impact on general academic workers’ well-being
universities have significant capacity for supporting the development of their local community (economic
This position becomes even more crucial in the presence of increasingly competitive and knowledge-based economies
Additionally, as also noted by Solari and Gambarotto (2014), a feeling of connection and belonging to a place might enhance well-being. Specifically, it is the sense of rootedness that determines the development of a sense of identity, which can then lead to implications related to well-being. This need, therefore, can also extend to workers as a component of their own well-being. This idea was later adopted by Torrisi and Pernagallo, (2022)
who in their research determined the role of territoriality in academic well-being as critical
by connecting the construct of territoriality [examined in terms of (i) differences with foreign countries and (ii) multi-local] with work engagement and job satisfaction
it emerged that a higher sense of territorial well-being is associated with better job engagement and satisfaction
many studies in the literature have concentrated on the welfare role represented by universities toward their host areas
we want to investigate the hypothesis that this role of universities is positively seen by the workers within it
social identity theory claims that an identification with the organizations to which one belongs might lead to the introjection of good traits associated with them to which the person attaches value
The territorial development mission of universities
could allow workers to incorporate this positive component into their being
implementing their self-esteem and increasing individual well-being
H3: The university’s capacity to enhance territorial well-being has a positive impact on academic workers’ well-being
Figure 1 displays the entire model along with research hypotheses
The survey was conducted on 198 workers in the University of Foggia (South Italy)
the sample consisted of lecturers (associate professors
TDa and TDb researchers – 134 individuals
67.7%) and technical–administrative personnel (64 individuals
Research participants received a link through which they could fill in a questionnaire examining factors related to academic well-being
anonymity was assured and the possibility of withdrawing from the study at any time: the information was examined in aggregate form and without the possibility of tracing it back to the person in any scenario
The experiment was approved by the Ethics Committee for Psychological Research of the University of Foggia (protocol n
Participants provided informed consent at the start of the online questionnaire completion form
The responses to the questionnaire were correctly gathered using the browser used to develop it and then properly tagged for further examination
The only sensitive data needed is that described in the participating section
distinguished by a multi-method (qualitative–quantitative) survey aimed at gathering the opinions of workers and students at the university
on a range of factors that can define the quality of organizational life and well-being in the academic setting of the University of Foggia
the initiative involves the collaboration of the University of Salento and the University Federico II of Naples
Not all study participants responded to the demographic inquiries
57.9% of the sample were female workers (66 individuals)
and 2.6% were nonbinary workers (3 individuals)
42.4% of the sample did not respond to the question (84 individuals)
The predominant attributes expressed as a percentage are listed below: regarding marital status
71.7% of the participants were married/cohabiting (81 individuals)
39.5% of the participants reported that they had underage children (45 individuals)
36.0% that they had no children (41 individuals)
16.7% that they had children of full age (19 individuals)
and 7.9% that they had children of both full age and underage (9 individuals)
almost 96.4% of the participants said that they lived in the university’s hometown or province (102 individuals)
0.9% in other parts of the regions (1 individual)
3.6% in regions bordering the university (4 individuals)
and 4.5% in distant regions (5 individuals)
43.2% of the sample did not respond to the question (86 individuals)
The academic staff intercepted for research purposes answered a standardized quantitative questionnaire characterized by several constructs already validated in the literature
The items mentioning place demonstrate clearly to the in-depth case study and concentrate on the city of Foggia
• Place attachment: three items from (Boley et al., 2021) and translated in Italian
Example item is “I am very attached to Foggia.” The response is coded on a Likert scale that assumes choice options ranging from 1 = Not at all to 6 = Totally
• Organizational identification: five items from (Mael and Tetrick, 1992), as translated in Italian by Brondino et al. (2022)
Example item is “The success of the university is mine too.” The reaction is measured on a Likert scale assuming choice options ranging from 1 = Not at all agree to 6 = Completely agree
• Territorial well-being: three ad hoc constructed items
Example of item is “In your opinion
does the University of Foggia contribute to the overall well-being of the area
and economic wealth it directly or indirectly brings?.” The response is coded on a Likert scale which assumes choice options ranging from 1 = Not at all to 6 = Very much
• Overall well-being: six items derived from the present scores on well-being as hypothesized by Esposito et al. (2022b)
An example of an item is “Given how your life is in general these days
which number do you choose now?.” The response is coded on a Likert scale that assumes choice options ranging from 1 = Worse to 10 = Better
Table 1 shows that the values for skewness and kurtosis were all within the range − 2/ +2 and − 7/ +7, respectively (Curran et al., 1996); consequently
the distribution of the data appears apparently normal
The variables considered in the study all had outstanding reliability and validity indices, as Table 2 demonstrates
with the only exception of the variable territorial well-being
which reveals a slightly lower Cronbach’s alpha than the norm (0.66)
Although the latter turns out to be the sole measure of reliability that is slightly subthreshold (in particular
an acceptable McDonald’s omega of 0.73 and an Average Variance Extracted (AVE) over 0.50)
it opens up the possibility of further in-depth research of the items of territorial well-being in the future
McDonald’s omega is above 0.80 for the other constructs
Regarding correlations (Table 3)
data demonstrate positive and significant correlations between organizational identification and territorial well-being (r1 = 0.426
place attachment (r2 = 0.342
and overall well-being (r3 = 0.445
as well as between territorial well-being and place attachment (r4 = 0.258
<0.001) and overall well-being (r5 = 0.437
and place attachment and overall well-being (r6 = 0.324
Moreover, in terms of the structural equation model, the following standards were deemed suitable: (i) comparative fit index (hereafter CFI) ≥0.90, root–mean–square error of approximation (hereafter RMSEA) ≤0.08, and standardized root–mean–square residuals (hereafter SRMR) ≤0.10 (O’Boyle and Williams, 2011)
the place attachment (β1 = 0.21
the organizational identification (β2 = 0.34
and the role of territorial well-being that the mission of the university itself promotes in the area (β3 = 0.31
<0.05) appear to be viewed by the academic staff as helpful tools to improve well-being
understood in its multidimensional dimension
the possibility of intervening in the territory
promoting the growth of the economy and structures
can also instill well-being processes in workers
Findings of the study demonstrated that for teaching and technical–administrative staff, among the key components for enhancing well-being in the academic setting is the social dimension of relationships, understood both inside and outside the university. As previously mentioned, relationships are the foundation for the development of a social identity (Harris and Orth, 2020) that is linked both to working groups and to the territory itself
the process by which this identity is realized is based on the logic of forming and strengthening interactional bonds with social groups based on belonging to a place or territory
Acting on the sense of belonging to an area
implementing and improving relations with the social actors involved
can have specific effects in enhancing well-being
Although this suggestion requires further study
the findings of this research demonstrate how attachment to a place and organizational identification
which might well be caused by the introduction of positive traits derived from the social mission of the university’s third mission (i.e.
from fostering the social well-being of the community)
The study findings highlight the significance of creating well-being-oriented intervention programs that involve community and territorial engagement
Regular evaluations of the organizational climate could be instrumental in maintaining and advancing the identified protective variables
The study has some limitations that must be considered when interpreting the findings
which does not allow the findings to be generalized
future research could use a bigger sample in order to reinforce the findings
going beyond the limitations of the present study
which probably also impacts specific fit indices such as the RMSEA
an extension of the sample could lead to more consistent findings
the metric of territorial well-being has a marginally lower reliability than desired by the relevant indices
This factor needs to be considered when interpreting the findings and in potential follow-up research
which might use more rigorous and reliable methods
the research requires additional data to support the findings
using workers from other universities in addition to the one considered in the study
the measures in the study are derived from self-report questionnaires and are therefore susceptible to potential bias; a follow-up study using a more rigorous research design and a more thorough psychometric analysis of the constructs (particularly for the ad hoc built items) supported by the utilization of more objective measurements (e.g.
number of events in the local territory which originate from the university
count of university–territory interactions) could give strength and empirical validity to the findings of this initial study
the nature of the study is cross-sectional
which is why a longitudinal extension of it could provide both a deeper knowledge of the phenomenon being studied and a better robustness of results
if social groups or belonging to a territory conveys positive meanings
these can influence psychological implications of improved well-being
offers an empirical insight on the way in which workers’ well-being can be promoted
are frequently seen as a straightforward means of generating wealth and advantage
thus without considering the relational and social aspect established inside
an enhanced ability for dialog with the territory
may inadvertently impact worker well-being
focusing on the positive aspects of the organizations and the places in which they operate could allow a better identification with the worker and
greater well-being and quality of life in the organization
encouraging collaboration between territories and institutions
highlighting their function as “promoters of well-being,” may benefit workers

Dennis Foggia (Leopard Racing Honda NSF250RW) won a brilliant victory at the end of a frantic British Moto3 race
putting himself right back in the contest for the 2022 World Championship
The 21-year-old went into the 12th race of the 20-round season 67 points off the championship lead
his second of the year and his first since the Indonesian Grand Prix in March
has moved him to within 42 points of the lead
after both riders ahead of him in the title fight crashed out at Silverstone
with around 20 riders in the lead group and innumerable overtaking manoeuvres
At the chequered flag the top ten were covered by 1.790 seconds
Foggia and team-mate Tatsuki Suzuki (Leopard Racing Honda NSF250RW) were in the fight for the podium throughout
but there was so much passing that one moment they were first and second and the next they were fourth and fifth
Each time he was relegated he immediately counter-attacked
taking the lead for the last time with an audacious move
passing the leader around the outside at the high-speed Turn 12
At the chequered flag he was 0.252 second ahead of his closest pursuer
The 24-year-old from Chiba was fighting to join Foggia when he slid off without injury
Honda’s next best finisher was Andrea Migno (Rivacold Snipers Team Honda NSF250RW)
Grand Prix rookie Mario Suryo Aji (Honda Team Asia Honda NSF250RW) had a great first race at Silverstone
The 18-year-old Indonesian charged through from 28th on the grid to join the huge leading group and finish 17th
just 1.5 seconds outside scoring World Championship points for the first time since his first points score in Indonesia
However for team-mate and fellow rookie Taiyo Furusato (Honda Team Asia Honda NSF250RW) there was instead disappointment
The 17-year-old from Kanoya qualified a best-ever 17th quickest and had high hopes of scoring his first points
another rider collided with him on the first lap
just two tenths of a second behind his team-mate
Moto3 now returns to Europe for the Austrian Grand Prix at Red Bull Ring on 21 August
from 17.00 to 19.00 at the Aula Magna of the Department of Law at the University of Foggia
the meeting entitled “Exploitation of labour and caporalato” will take place
The meeting will also be attended by Donatella Curtotti
President of the Bar Association of Foggia
President of the Union of Workers and Welfare of Foggia
President of the Order of Labour Consultants of Foggia

World Championship hopeful Dennis Foggia (Leopard Racing Honda NSF250RW) rode a stunning race at Misano today to take his second victory in three races
The ninth Grand Prix victory of his career also completed a Misano hat-trick – Foggia won both races here last year
The 21-year-old Italian enjoyed a dazzling home-race battle with three determined rivals
the quartet separated by just metres and then centimetres during the frantic final laps
Foggia was just perfect when it mattered most
having fought his way through from the third row of the grid
The lead changed several times in the last few laps
using the amazing speed and acceleration of his NSF250RW to make some audacious overtakes
especially into Misano’s flat-out-in-sixth-gear Turn 11
By the chequered flag Foggia had eked out a 0.289-second advantage for a very well-earned third win of the year
following his successes at the Indonesian Grand Prix in March and at last month’s British GP
He is now 35 points off the championship lead
Foggia’s team-mate Tatsuki Suzuki (Leopard Racing Honda NSF250RW) also rode a brilliant race
Yesterday the 24-year-old from Chiba qualified on the sixth row of the grid but fought back superbly from that handicap to join the lead group – six riders at that time – at two-thirds distance
having used his tyres so much during his comeback he didn’t quite have the pace to stay with the leaders to the end and slipped back to finish sixth
Riccardo Rossi (Sic 58 Squadra Corse Honda NSF250RW) worked his way into the top ten after starting from the fifth row of the grid but lost a few places to finish 11th
Grand Prix rookie Taiyo Furusato (Honda Team Asia Honda NSF250RW) did everything he could to fight forward during the race but his lowly grid position didn’t help and he finally took the chequered flag in 21st position
Team-mate Mario Suryo Aji (Honda Team Asia Honda NSF250RW) made a good start and was just outside the points when he fell heavily
Moto3 riders and teams now head west for the Aragon Grand Prix in Spain on 18 September
before going east for the Japanese Grand Prix on 25 September
The Twin Ring Motegi event is followed by the Thai
The 2022 season concludes with the Valencia GP in Spain on 6 November
The reforestation project is one of the initiatives included in Leonardo’s Sustainability Plan
The planting of more than 1,650 trees is expected to absorb a total of 367 tonnes of CO2
reduce PM10 emissions by up to 16.6 tonnes
and release up to 268 tonnes of oxygen into the air over the next 20 years
Under one of the initiatives included in its Sustainability Plan
with the support of Leonardo Global Solutions
has conducted its first complete reforestation programme on the land in one of the Group’s industrial sites
creating a new green area at the Foggia plant
The project was developed under a partnership with Arbolia
a benefit company set up by Snam and Fondazione Cassa Depositi e Prestiti to promote and implement tree planting and reforestation projects all over Italy with a view to fighting climate change
improving air quality and quality of life in cities
The project involved planting more than 1,650 trees and shrubs in marginal parts of the site and areas frequented by employees
following a specialised agroforestry study
with tree species native to the area in order to preserve local biodiversity
the project at the Foggia site is expected to absorb a total of over 360 tonnes of CO2
decrease PM10 emissions (fine particulate present in the atmosphere) by up to 16.6 tonnes
and release more than 260 tonnes of oxygen into the atmosphere
the area will become a new “green lung” accessible to all site employees
The idea underlying the partnership between Leonardo and Arbolia is a simple one: despite today’s increasingly advanced technological horizons
planting trees is still an effective way to combat climate change and promote biodiversity
Trees are valuable allies: through photosynthesis
they absorb and accumulate large quantities of CO2 present in the atmosphere
helping to fight climate change and promote human health and well-being
Leonardo has been working on projects aimed at decreasing emissions for some time now
working towards the goal of reducing CO2 by 40% by the year 2030
permitting more efficient use of resources and supporting the ecological transition In 2022
Leonardo officially stated its commitment to the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi)
a partnership promoted by UN Global compact (UNGC)
which now has more than 2,000 member companies the world over
SBTi supports companies in their efforts to pursue the goal of decarbonisation
guiding them in setting targets aligned with the aim of limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5°C
as required under the 2015 Paris Agreement
in addition to the workforce in the supply chain
the Foggia site is one of the crowing achievements of Leonardo’s aeronautical division
a centre of excellence for the production of aerostructures made of composite materials for military and civil aircraft: from the Eurofighter Typhoon to the F-35
and from the Boeing 787 Dreamliner to the ATR
The site represents a concrete example of the company’s processes of innovation and industrial transformation
implemented through investment in the digitisation of production lines and corporate processes to ensure the competitiveness of current programmes and make the most of future opportunities
Complete automation of the Airbus A220 programme line has been implemented in Foggia to expand and boost capacity
production processes and logistical flows with solutions aimed at improving competitiveness on the global aeronautics market and optimising integration with the supply chain
