Marcus Foligno knows the Minnesota Wild are one loss away from the end of their season
He also knows they are one win away from forcing a winner-take-all Game 7

We can deal with this stuff,” Foligno said
Just the (stuff) that we’ve had to deal with

Nick Foligno really wants to beat the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday night
And if Sam Rinzel’s offensive instincts and Artyom Levshunov’s aggressiveness and Oliver Moore’s speed all help the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Avalanche
never mind the long game Chicago general manager Kyle Davidson is playing from up high
“We’re worried about winning games still,” Foligno said
the Blackhawks captain doesn’t have the luxury of patience
It’s taken nearly three years for the first-round picks from the 2022 draft class — Kevin Korchinski
Frank Nazar and Rinzel — to play an NHL game together
and it could take three more years before they become the stars and franchise pillars Davidson hopes they’ll become
That’s the cold calculus of a long-term rebuild
and it’s math Foligno did long before he decided to sign a two-year
His captaincy was always going to be a transition
a bridge from Chicago’s Jonathan Toews era to its Connor Bedard era
body and soul — into trying to build some semblance of a winning culture in a franchise that has shown precious little urgency to actually win
He’s always been the team’s biggest booster and he’s often been its disappointed dad
passionately laying out his vision for what these Blackhawks can be and doing everything he can to make it happen
All while knowing he’s building the foundation of a house he’ll never get to live in
planting a garden he’ll never get to see bloom
I’d love to be a part of this down the road,’” he said on Tuesday
in a locker room suddenly bursting at the seams with players nearly young enough to be Foligno’s sons
I knew what I signed up for when I got here
Sometimes it’s heartbreaking and sometimes it’s frustrating
That’s what I want to make sure these young guys understand
then you’re going to be kicking yourself watching a guy that you were sitting next to in the locker room that is a part of this
that’s enjoying the benefits of what’s to come
I think that’s a pretty powerful motivator.”
A powerful motivator for the likes of Wyatt Kaiser
trying to prove they belong in the same breath — and on the same blue line — as the first-round picks Levshunov
trying to carve out a role for himself after failing to entrench himself in the top six as a first-rounder
playing for a contract and the chance to be a long-term solution in goal alongside Spencer Knight
Where does his seemingly boundless energy and optimism come from
How does he fight so hard for a “reward” he’ll likely never get
The chances of him winning one in Chicago are infinitesimal
He’s one of the most popular players in the league and he can still play — he’s got 29 goals over the past two seasons — so he easily could have gone the well-trod way of the mercenary
this interminable slog toward respectability
Because playing a bit role on a contender can be rewarding
But playing a huge role in the lives of so many young players can be fulfilling
the Blackhawks’ late-season youth movement has Foligno as excited as anybody
Chicago was the fifth-oldest team in the league
Bedard was the only player under 23 in its opening-night lineup
And Foligno has pulled each one of them aside and explained to them what it means to play for the Chicago Blackhawks and what they have to do to stick around
“Any time you’re going through a rebuild like we are
and then you start to weed guys out and figure out who’s going to help us,” Foligno said
and he might look better than the one you have
just making sure you’re not letting an opportunity slip by
The reason why guys stay in the league a long time is they’ve made themselves valuable
because there’s always another player coming
This is how we grow into the team we hope to become
And that’s what I’m talking about with the culture and the identity — who are we
they already know this is what we’re supposed to be and we can work toward that
but it’s promising and it’s exciting to see
There are so many young players with opportunities in front of them
As the youngsters come in and establish themselves
He’ll be on the fourth line against Colorado
Hardly the most exciting trio of the bunch
But you can be sure Foligno will be giving everything he has for however many minutes he gets
And you can be sure he’ll be in every video session
piping up with words of encouragement or wisdom
And you can be sure he’ll pull Moore aside with advice on how to win a board battle or pull Rinzel aside with a battle plan for when Nathan MacKinnon gets the puck and a head of steam in the neutral zone
He’s fully invested in the Blackhawks’ future
“Absolutely,” interim head coach Anders Sörensen said
and he really wants to help these young guys out
“You see him going out there and working hard
this guy’s been doing it for how many years and he’s still this competitive and still wants it this bad
Nazar was cracking on Foligno for being so old and out of touch with the pop-culture references of an increasingly young locker room
The message: Whether you’re a 19-year-old rookie or a 37-year-old captain
making sure they understand that they’re part of the fold here now
we’re all teammates and it doesn’t matter what age you are — I’m going to do the same job you’re doing and we’re going to try and do it the best we can.”
More nights than not, it hasn’t been enough. The Blackhawks have lost 53 of their 74 games this season. In the cold light of Hockey Reference
Foligno’s captaincy could go down as the least successful in a century of Blackhawks hockey
to just go Cup-chasing in the twilight of his career
those who shared a locker room with Foligno
If and when the Blackhawks are back on top of the league
Foligno’s name won’t be on the Stanley Cup
but it’s not about me at this point,” he said
I’m going to be pretty damn proud sitting back on my rocking chair watching this team go in the next few years
LAS VEGAS — Nick Foligno has watched his younger brother
He knows the Minnesota Wild winger is a physical force
couldn’t believe it when he saw Marcus credited with 11 hits in Game 1 of the first-round series against the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday
“I was dying laughing,” Nick Foligno told The Athletic
has a punishing style made for playoff hockey
225-pound winger is a big part of the fabric for the hard-checking Wild
Defensemen cringe going back to the boards when he’s forechecking
The idea for Foligno and the Wild is if they can wear down the Golden Knights by the end of the series
“That’s when he’s playing his best hockey,” coach John Hynes said
But what happens when you’re Foligno and you lose the physical ability to be that player
Foligno said there were some low moments this past summer
when he was rehabbing from his second core surgery in as many years
There were times in the last couple seasons when he felt like he was playing on one leg
The bread and butter of Foligno’s game is forechecking
The father of three struggled to play soccer in the backyard with his daughters
He’d tie a string to their bikes so he wouldn’t have to chase them as far down the street
“There were some dark days going through that stuff and thinking about the future and thinking about
how are you going to manage through this injury?” Foligno said
“You’re thinking about it: ‘Will this (surgery) really solve all my problems?’ You’re really banking on coming out of it
little bit of fogginess where it comes to like
‘Am I going to be the player I once was before these injuries started piling up?’”
$16 million extension before the 2023-24 season
It was around Christmas that season when Foligno first started to notice the issues
The stops and starts became more challenging
Foligno had his first core surgery that offseason
and the second one came after he was shut down in late March last year
once the Wild were eliminated from playoff contention
who has gone through his share of injuries in his career
“He seems to have an answer for everything,” Marcus said
How Marcus and Nick Foligno’s NHL paths were shaped by their late mother: ‘She was the rock’

The biggest change is how Foligno had to alter some of his training
to become more in tune with certain types of stretches and treatment to extend his career
“That’s the hardest thing to come to terms with as an older player
You just have to take more care of yourself
over time your body just takes a beating and you don’t realize it
I watched guys when I came into the league and I was like
Marcus Foligno said that means a lot more anti-inflammatory treatments
it means 20 to 30 more minutes in the gym with minor exercises that make a big difference
put skates on and go,” Marcus Foligno said
You’ve got to fire up your body and make sure you get rested and make sure everything is feeling good again
That gives me confidence mentally knowing I’m 100 percent in the game.”
Nick Foligno said they even saw a pelvic floor specialist out of Toronto named Sally Belanger
Before Foligno saw the differences on the ice
he noticed them at home with daughters: Olivia
I wasn’t able to kick a soccer ball last year,” Marcus Foligno said
“Now I’m able to run in the backyard and chase their bike when they go down the street
I’d have a string on it so I didn’t have to go too far
Foligno said it took until approximately the 10-game mark this season for him to feel more like his old self in games
and the confidence that he can do everything physically that he used to
He couldn’t skate fast enough to establish a forecheck the way he previously did
“That’s the biggest difference from this year
is that I can do all the stuff and not have to think twice about
‘Can I get up the ice right now?’” Foligno said
Foligno has garnered an immense level of respect from teammates
He plays a hard game and that takes a toll
Foligno talks like a captain and hits like a freight train
every team in the league probably wants two of them,” defenseman Jake Middleton said
“We’re fortunate to have the original ‘Moose.’ What he brings from a leadership standpoint and play away from the puck and finishing checks — guys know when he dumps it
Those are things he brings night in and night out that can’t really be replicated.”

Foligno quietly was one of the league’s top defensive forwards this season
According to The Athletic’s Dom Luszczyszyn’s model
which accounts for his play at even strength and short-handed
along with his usage; that was 23rd in the league
The Wild allowed .44 fewer expected goals against per 60 relative to his teammates at five-on-five
Foligno didn’t play the toughest defensive assignments consistently this year
perhaps a little different than his GREEF days (with Jordan Greenway and Joel Eriksson Ek)
But Foligno was a stabilizing force in a year when the Wild missed Kaprizov
Eriksson Ek and others for a good chunk of the season
his most since a career-high 22 in 2021-22
“He’s such an important part to this group,” said Gustav Nyquist
a deadline addition who is in his second stint with the Wild
Foligno said he hopes the Wild’s physical style eventually wears down the Golden Knights; Minnesota’s 54 hits in Game 1 were second-most in postseason franchise history
behind the 71 they had against Vegas in 2021
“You can feel the wind come out of some guys when you squeeze them pretty good,” Foligno said
it’s tough when you’ve got guys that chip it in
they’ve got to turn and they feel like you’re coming
They’re not making a great tape-to-tape pass
they’re rimming pucks and that plays into our forecheck
It’s tough for anyone to feel that pressure every night
So it’s fun to be the hunter instead of the hunted.”
But if the Wild are going to advance past the favored Golden Knights
they’ll need more from their depth up front
even (Mats Zuccarello); they’re great playmakers,” Nick Foligno said
When he’s healthy and when he’s doing this
Once you have the taste of playoffs and you don’t get there
If you were to create a prototypical NHL playoff forward from scratch
throw in a willingness to make a “play without gloves on” when necessary
and make said player a bulldog around the opponent’s net
When you were finished putting all of those elements together
that forward might look a lot like Minnesota Wild veteran Marcus Foligno
Not only does Foligno lead all NHL players this spring with 35 postseason hits
he already has more than doubled his career postseason goals number
scoring in three of the first four games of the Wild’s first-round series with Vegas
With Foligno still signed for three more years
it’s a good sign for a franchise that believes it’s on the cusp of real playoff success
“The attributes he plays with are built for playoff time,” Wild coach John Hynes said following the team’s Monday morning practice at TRIA Rink
Foligno is often a willing fighter in the regular season
but Hynes said a key to playoff success this year has been playing a physical role while staying out of the penalty box
He’s playing the style of game with his puck play that sets him up to be a strong player
lurking around Golden Knights goalie Adin Hill and slamming home the rebound of a Ryan Hartman shot after Hill made the initial save
It was a veteran play in a part of the rink where you know there will be contact from the opposing defense
But Foligno has made a living with his size and dogged determination in those “dirty areas” of the ice
While the playoff numbers are unprecedented in his career
Wild teammates say that this is the Foligno they see throughout the regular season and in practice
all year long,” Wild goalie Marc-Andre Fleury said
“So many nights when we’re a little flat or something
he brings so much energy with the way he plays — dropping the gloves
love to watch his play and to watch him be productive.”
Fleury added that several years of practicing against Foligno
and trying to see incoming pucks around the forward’s 6-foot-3
227-pound frame is the challenge that Hill faces
and older brother Nick is skating for the Chicago Blackhawks
is the fact that Nick has twice been to the second round of the playoffs
That might be an extra incentive for the younger Foligno brother to continue his playoff prowess
with the Wild filled with confidence headed back to Vegas for Game 5 on Tuesday at T-Mobile Arena
and their 23 regular-season road wins are tied for third among NHL teams
“It gives us a lot of confidence,” Foligno said
we’ve got to understand that we’ve got to play the same way and play like we did in spurts of Game 1 and majority of Game 2
Hynes did not use rookie defenseman Zeev Buium in overtime of Game 4
Buium was not skating with the top six defenseman
the coach admitted a change might be coming in Game 5
Buium has a point in his four career games while playing on the Wild’s top power-play unit
and also took a costly four-minute penalty in the third period of their overtime loss in Game 4
Veteran Jon Merrill would be the most likely candidate to take Buium’s place on the back end

ST. PAUL, Minn — Jake Middleton was on a plane Saturday night, heading on a vacation to Mexico, when he found himself glued to the beginning of the Canada-United States showdown at the 4 Nations Face-Off
The Minnesota Wild defenseman was so pumped up; it was like he was playing himself
“My heart rate was probably a buck-80 (180) watching that in the air,” Middleton said
The three fights in the first nine seconds of that 3-1 victory by the Americans were right up winger Marcus Foligno’s alley

there will no doubt be a few informal watch parties among the Wild teammates for Thursday’s game
They’re not expecting the same type of early-game fights
Asked whether he had ever brainstormed a fight through a team group chat like the Tkachuk brothers said they had with J.T
I heard something about Tkachuk saying it happened ‘organically.’ I don’t know how organic that is
Might have to check that label one more time.”
around Saturday’s game and likely Thursday’s rematch will be great for the sport

I saw the viewership was insane for U.S.-Canada
Then you have to put it in playoff mode and play for your country
doing a heck of a job representing the countries and the league.”
The Wild resumed practices Tuesday afternoon and went through two fast-paced and intense sessions led by associate coach Jack Capuano
as a good chunk of the team is still missing: Hynes and the five players involved in the 4 Nations are gone
But the drills and energy had a training camp vibe
jokingly comparing it to being part of “Group A” in camp
“The vitamin D was great in Mexico,” Foligno quipped
We all know what’s at stake in the next 26 games or so
and this is coming into the best time of the year.”
The Wild won five of their last seven heading into the two-week break
including consecutive home wins over the Carolina Hurricanes and New York Islanders
The key is getting back into the type of commitment that led Minnesota to do so
Capuano said there were a few themes in each of the practices
with Wednesday’s more focused on the defensive side
from wall battles to closing out opponents and exiting the zone
“It’s tough when you go into a break for so long
It’s almost like a training camp,” Capuano said
“As a coaching staff and working with strength and conditioning
you’ve got to be careful on the workouts you give them
The plan for now: The three Swedes who participated in the 4 Nations (Filip Gustavsson
Jonas Brodin and Joel Eriksson Ek) will join the team for Friday’s practice before its flight to Detroit for Saturday’s game
Faber and Hynes will meet the team in Detroit for the Saturday matinee against the Red Wings
Friday marks three weeks since superstar Kirill Kaprizov underwent surgery on his lower-body injury
And though the Russian winger has been around the team
there’s still some uncertainty on when he’ll return
“Maybe when John (Hynes) and (president of hockey operations and general manager Bill Guerin) get back
Guerin made it clear that the 27-year-old winger would be out a “minimum” of four weeks
it’s not necessarily surprising Kaprizov hasn’t skated yet
But his status will be one to watch leading up to the trade deadline
Jakub Lauko (lower body) returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since getting shut down right before the 4 Nations break — he barely made it through the loss in Boston on Feb
Lauko looked good as pretty much a full participant Wednesday
with Capuano saying they’re going to see how he responds as they head into this weekend
did not participate Wednesday because of illness
The Wild are aware of the lower-body injury that has kept touted prospect Danila Yurov out of the last few KHL games. Yurov is undergoing surgery, and the Wild believe he’ll be back for the KHL playoffs. Yurov, ranked No. 2 in the Wild’s prospect pool by The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler
has 13 goals and 12 assists in 46 games this season for Metallurg Magnitogorsk

Golden Knights have a 3-2 lead in the playoff series after Wild’s apparent game-winner was wiped away Tuesday
the Wild will have to overcome their cruelest twist yet
They have to win Game 6 on Thursday night at Xcel Energy Center to stave off elimination by Vegas after a harrowing 3-2 overtime loss in Game 5 on Tuesday in which the Wild were briefly on the brink of victory
“It’s the Minnesota Wild,” alternate captain Marcus Foligno said
Amid the misfortune that has befallen the Wild
“It’s tough,” Foligno said. “His angle, too, I don’t think he could really see around their defenseman. Hey, those are the bounces of the game. Every last one of us has been offside many times.
“It’s just tough that it’s a significant part of the game, but he’s a big player for us, and I know that he’ll be bouncing back.”
At 4:05 into overtime, Brett Howden pounced on an uncontested shot for a Vegas victory that was still mindboggling even if it was right on the nose for the Wild’s topsy-turvy season.
“It wasn’t on one of the three players that were down low or any of the five players on the ice,” coach John Hynes said. “It was kind of a combination of mistakes.”
The stakes have never been this steep, but the Wild have had plenty of practice at persisting.
They faltered but didn’t fold when they lost Kirill Kaprizov for half a season, the superstar winger’s lower-body injury and surgery forcing him out of an MVP race he looked destined to win and slowing the Wild after a first-half surge lifted them atop the league.
Injuries to other key players, from mid-November until April, hardwired the Wild to adapt to adversity, so much so that when they finally were healthy, they still took the gutsiest path to the postseason: They advanced because center Joel Eriksson Ek scored with 22 seconds left in the third period of their regular-season finale to give the Wild the point they needed to solidify a wild-card spot.
Trailing 2-1 going into the third period, the Wild retaliated with winger Matt Boldy scoring his fifth goal of the playoffs and the defense stifling Vegas’ offense. Marc-Andre Fleury took over in net because Filip Gustavsson was too sick to continue, and the Wild eased Fleury’s transition by not allowing a shot on goal for his first 13:43 of action.
Foligno had no clue during the first two periods that Gustavsson was under the weather
and I saw [emergency backup goalie Jesper Wallstedt] come down
and then I saw Flower do 10 pushups,” said Foligno
who knows Fleury “does a quick chest set” before going between the pipes
It was the sharpest the Wild have defended in the series
Hartman’s finish was a well-deserved reward and even stayed on the nail-biting script
But blowing that opportunity doesn’t have to define the Wild. Neither does going offside on a potential game-winner.
There’s still time to do what they’ve done all season long, and that’s downgrade the gut punches to gut checks.
“We’re made for it,” Foligno said. “The pesky Wild will persevere in this case, and we have a really good mindset coming into Game 6. Nothing’s been easy this year. I know our slogan’s ‘Hard,’ but it’s meant to be.
“It’s meant to be,” Foligno repeated. “I truly believe that we can get back in the series and win it, and so does everyone.”

in the Stanley Cup playoff series against the Vegas Golden Knights
“Moose” calls when he’s on home ice and winces from the fans in Las Vegas
isn’t why Foligno has been throwing his body around the ice like a wrecking ball
His objective as the Stanley Cup playoffs’ hits leader is to make life difficult on the Golden Knights’ defense, which he’s done — and not just by running into people — to help the Wild to a 2-2 split in the best-of-seven series
“Have there been some hits where you go out of your way
“But most of it has been just finishing the first guy you see
I’m not trying to poke check and [make] stick plays
where they can do a lot of give-and-go’s and burn you
“If you’re the one initiating it, it’s a lot easier,” said Foligno, who recovers in the cold tub, by resting and with food.
There is a technique to the toughness and while the execution has become second nature for the 6-3, 226-pound winger, Foligno is processing the circumstances in real time.
He strives to hit into the boards rather than in open ice where there’s a “gray area, especially in this time of year” with what’s legal. Foligno is always trying to leverage his whole body, particularly the legs.
Earlier in his career, he hit with his shoulders and that led to injury. A coach told him to utilize his hips more. So, legs steady, and the point of contact is from the shoulder to the front.
“From the shoulder to the back, I think, is questionable,” Foligno said.
As for when to connect, that’s when the opposition releases the puck; later and the player is not expecting it.
“I always liked the feeling of you outmuscled another guy, and it was clean,” said Foligno, whose 253 hits in the regular season led the Wild and ranked 10th in the league.
Since joining the Wild in 2017, the alternate captain is also top 10 in the NHL at 1,591; Joel Eriksson Ek is second on the team in that span with 956.
“You’re going to [get] bumps and bruises,” Foligno said. “But nothing that’s going to be substantial that is going to hurt you long-term.”
has been the series’ most physical player and one of its more productive
At 5-on-5, the Wild have been outshot and outchanced when the defensively savvy Foligno (who has mostly matched up against the Golden Knights’ second line) has been on the ice, but they have outscored Vegas 2-1, according to Natural Stat Trick. Foligno has capitalized on three of his four shots in the series, which included an empty-netter in Game 3, and all three of his scoring chances have been high-danger looks.
But even if he is not putting pucks on net, Foligno is a threat because of how disruptive his style can be.
“When you chip a puck in and that D-man is not looking confident to make a clean pass, I think that’s your job, right, is to repeat, repeat,” said Foligno, who has absorbed only seven hits. “You gotta make sure you’re finishing your routes. There’s nothing worse, talking to our D, is a guy knowing you’re going to go back for it and you’re going to get hit.
“It makes you panic, and sometimes in the third period they throw an uncharacteristic play because they don’t want to get hit, and that’s what leads to turnovers and that leads to a chance where in a playoffs series, it matters.”
Now more than ever since Game 5 on Tuesday will put one team on the brink of elimination.
“You hope that if it goes to a Game 7, they’re not feeling so great,” Foligno said. “That’s my job, to always provide that physical play.”

Although he wasn’t the one who planned the surprise
Nick Foligno couldn’t have scripted it any better for himself
Last Thursday was full of surprises for Foligno
one of which included the Blackhawks announcing that the 36-year-old forward was selected as the 35th captain in Blackhawks franchise history
If that wasn’t reason enough to celebrate – and it most certainly was for Foligno – having his children
17 jersey emblazoned with the ‘C’ for the very first time
made it one of the most treasured moments in his hockey career
“It was unbelievably special,” Foligno told NHLPA.com
“My wife [Janelle] knew before me – I can’t believe she was able to keep that secret from me
There would be no career without the backbone of my family
Everyone knows how much my family means to me
so having my kids be there and do that – I think it meant more to me than they realized.”
being a captain of an Original Six team is a ‘pinch me’ moment
I understand my role here and I am grateful to be in that position
‘what an incredible honour they have bestowed upon me.’ I am so humbled.”
Originally selected by the Ottawa Senators 28th overall at the 2006 NHL Draft
native has recorded 562 points in 1,155 regular-season NHL games with the Ottawa Senators
ninth in points (562) and 10th in assists (330)
He previously served as captain of the Blue Jackets for six seasons from 2015 to 2021
leading the team to four straight playoff berths from 2017 to 2020
is entering his second season with the Blackhawks
“I was very fortunate to learn from great players when I started out in Ottawa,” said Foligno
who in 2017 won both the Mark Messier Leadership Award and the King Clancy Memorial Trophy
“That carried through to my time in Columbus and on from there.”
Just as it did over his two seasons in Boston
I learned a lot in Boston when I got to play with Patrice Bergeron
you emulate a lot of what you learned from those types of leaders and put those bits and pieces into your own style.”
Being authentic is the cornerstone of Foligno’s leadership approach
“It’s all about being as natural and organic as possible
“One thing I have learned over all my stops is that when you look out for what is best for the team
it is amazing how that resonates with everyone – whatever is best for the group benefits everybody.”
“That is what you want to create within the room
It makes everyone take ownership of the roles and the care that goes into that
there is much more emphasis on the job you do and putting your teammates in a great spot
It’s about everyone pulling the same way
I’m very lucky to have some great guys to lean on in that room
“It’s also about looking after your teammates off the ice
It’s amazing what comes out of having that environment
That is the beautiful part of what we are trying to create in Chicago
We have the right people in place to do that.”
Led by one of the game’s most respected veterans
While the goal is to find success in the present
Foligno is also focused on establishing a blueprint for prosperity in the years to come in Chicago
“I am very excited to really help lay the groundwork and build a solid foundation for the next generation of players who are coming through here to have years of success.”
Chicago’s new captain is up for the challenge
“I understand where I am in my career
and I am confident that I can produce and help the team win now
I can hopefully look back with a smile on my face and see some of the guys in this room take on a leadership role – that would mean the world to me.”
Foligno became the 35th captain in franchise history on Wednesday
The move was announced by the organization on the eve of its first official practice of training camp

After tying the franchise record with 11 hits in Game 1
Marcus Foligno set a new franchise record with 12 hits in Game 2

added four PIM and doled out four hits in Thursday's 5-2 win over the Golden Knights in Game 3
Foligno toned down the hitting in this contest and still came away with a goal for the second game in a row
27 hits and a plus-2 rating across three playoff outings
Foligno is playing his style in a third-line role
so he's unlikely to move around the lineup too much
This season marked the first for Nick Foligno as the Chicago Blackhawks’ captain
and it was the most important one of the organization’s current rebuild
Even though they finished in the same spot in the league standings as they did a year ago
the ending of this season was extremely exciting for the future
They hung around in games that they wouldn’t have been at the beginning of the campaign
and the youth movement made its presence known
Seeing the first-round picks from the last few seasons sign their entry-level contracts and make their NHL debuts gave fans even more of a reason to tune into a team that was long out of the playoff race
The goal for next year for the Blackhawks should be to get out of the league’s basement
The Blackhawks will have made a top-four draft pick in the first round for three straight years
regardless of how the lottery goes next month
While loading up the prospect pool with young and elite talent is never a bad thing
there comes a point where a shift is needed in the rebuild
Foligno knows that this team needs to flip a switch next season and that they have the pieces necessary to do so
“The next step for our group is to get into a mindset to be a meaningful team,” Foligno said. It’s starts now to be highly motivated to be a part of this process
There’s a collective group now that gets to decide if they want to be a part of where we’re going”
This group likely consists of other veterans alongside Foligno who have multi-year contracts like Tyler Bertuzzi and Teuvo Teravainen
The young portion of the group should include Connor Bedard
Alex Vlasic and Frank Nazar among others who have made an impact this season
The game in Montreal on Monday night against the Canadians was the first playoff-like atmosphere that this young group has played in together
Foligno saw it as a valuable experience and one that the team thrived in
“That game in Montreal, I saw a collective mindset of handling ourselves with maturity,” Foligno said. “It’s those moments that get you really excited.”
The Blackhawks faught back down 2-0 early in that contest to defeat Montreal 4-3 in a shootout
Not only was this a tough road environment that showed them what playoff hockey will be like down the road
but they overcame a tough start to take down a relatively strong team
Foligno’s contract expires after next season
He knows that the future is now for the Blackhawks organization and that it is almost time to pass the torch to the next generation
“This is their team,” Foligno insisted. “As much as I’m the Captain
this is their team and I’m going to hand that off to them at some point.”
It will be interesting to see how many young faces can break camp and make the opening night roster this fall
There were plenty of debuts made this season
but with certain veterans returning to full health and a couple of free agent signings bound to happen
not every young player can be with the big club to begin the season
It will be tough to make this team next season
which is the first time someone can say that about the Blackhawks in quite some time

The Chicago Blackhawks collected a rare road victory on Thursday night following one of their hardest defeats of the season earlier on in the week
Despite this year’s team having similar results in the win column compared to a season ago
their style of play has drastically changed
The Blackhawks haven’t been getting blown out to the extent that they did last year and they are playing a much more physical brand of hockey
Chicago did not get shut out for the first time all season until their loss in Colorado on March 10
This is way later than their first shutout in the 2023-24 campaign
which shows that their goal scoring efforts have improved with a couple of the veteran additions made last summer
The squad has still gone through their handful of tougher losses this year, but that is expected with the number of roster changes that they experience on a weekly basis
This season will be seen as a shift in Chicago’s rebuild
as some first-round draft picks from the last couple of years have made their NHL debuts over the past month
The Blackhawks bounced back nicely on Thursday in Boston after a rough loss two nights prior against the Penguins
The team’s captain believes their post-game conversations on Tuesday led to a better outcome in their final road game in the United States this year
Foligno made it known to the media after Thursday’s 5-2 victory in Boston that the team’s long meeting after the Pittsburgh game on Tuesday definitely had an impact on how they played
“There was a more conscious effort for some guys to just dig it, respect the game,” Foligno said.
The team’s 5-0 loss on Tuesday was just the second time they have been shut out all season
They allowed three goals in the third period
which was the real back breaker in the loss
Chicago trailed 1-0 after the first 20 minutes of play on Thursday before Foligno scored his 13th goal of the season in the second period
With the score knotted at one entering the third frame
the Blackhawks scored three goals in the span of 93 seconds to put the game out of reach
a spark was certainly needed to get this team across the finish line
Saturday marks the final home contest for Chicago
before they head to Canada to play two games next Monday and Tuesday
Foligno is under contract through the end of next season
which gives him plenty of time to work with all of the young pieces that will be entering their first full NHL seasons in the fall
The veteran forward was named the 35th captain of the franchise over the summer after they went without a designated leader last year
It is clear that Foligno can handle the room and be an aid to the coaching staff
which will be a huge selling point when general manager Kyle Davidson is conducting interviews for the new bench boss this summer
While Foligno doesn’t have much time left in his professional career
he has made it clear that Chicago is exactly where he wants to be

the 23-year-old center had only three shots and zero goals
In his three previous games before the switch he had only four shots
"I think there's a lot of reasons," Boldy said on why it's working with Foligno on the top line
wins battles and he's hard to take it from
So when you got someone that is hanging on pucks
keeping pucks alive or getting second and third chances
When you got someone as big as him and as strong as him coming down to hit you
He keeps pucks alive for us and then we can make some plays
the trio scored all three goals in the Wild's 3-2 win over a divisional rival
Boldy opened the scoring in the third and followed it up with an assist on Foligno's goal after he passed it to Rossi who found Foligno alone in the slot
“It wasn’t the greatest sauce pass by Marco
so I thought I had to handle it a little bit harder," Foligno said smiling after the game
I think me stopping on it helped maybe push Oettinger back a little bit and I was a little bit worried that maybe my stick got on his pad or something
Rossi ended up scoring the overtime-winner just 58 seconds into overtime
We will see how much longer the trio stays together
Kirill Kaprizov has been skating with the team and could return in the Wild's next game on Wednesday
Hynes could keep Foligno with Rossi and Boldy or he could put Kaprizov with Rossi and Boldy
as well as that top line has played and the chemistry Kaprizov has with his best friend
that Hynes would opt for Kaprizov to play with Mats Zuccarello
The Wild's top-nine lines with Kaprizov back could look like this
Foligno has enjoyed playing with Rossi and Boldy and the two of them also agree
It has provided the young offensive forwards more time and space to create plays
“It’s a lot of minutes," Foligno joked
Forward Marcus Foligno speaks with media following 6-1 loss in Utah
Foligno scored a goal on two shots and doled out 12 hits in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Golden Knights in Game 2
His goal put the Wild up 2-0 in the first period
and he was a physical force throughout the contest
Foligno has the grit to succeed in the playoffs
but his third-line role doesn't bode well for sustained offense since the Wild have struggled to get much production aside from the top line
Foligno has already racked up 23 hits in two playoff games
75 PIM and a plus-7 rating over 77 regular-season outings

Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno is still trying to motivate the team for their final 11 games
Anders Sorensen hasn’t hesitated to interrupt poorly executed practice drills and yell at the Blackhawks for sloppiness during his tenure as interim coach
the only yelling was in the form of words of encouragement coming from captain Nick Foligno
one of the Hawks’ sharpest sessions in months
With only 11 games left in another long-since-lost season
Foligno is trying to ensure the Hawks’ energy levels don’t drop off — as they easily could — before the season finale April 15
‘‘I knew what I signed up here to do: try to move this forward
we’ve still got to try to push this thing forward
‘‘That’s where you separate yourself as a guy who really cares or a guy that’s just [motivated] when it’s convenient
We’re weeding out some of those things in here
We need guys who want to be a part of this
It’s an emotional roller coaster a lot of days
But we’re hoping we can start to solidify ourselves.’’
Foligno has made several not-so-vague references such as that one about former alternate captain Seth Jones’ trade request in the weeks since he was dealt
although Jones might not have been the only veteran mentally checking out
It has become clear Jones’ realization he no longer could tolerate the Hawks’ lengthy rebuild not only created some interpersonal tensions but also opened eyes to the importance of having a locker room full of players genuinely invested in and devoted to the cause
not just collecting paychecks and going through the motions
said he has been ‘‘encouraged’’ by some things he has seen around the team and alarmed by others
He didn’t want to discuss the latter things Tuesday
but he intends to do so in exit interviews and this summer
Foligno’s impassioned comments at the end of the season about the Hawks needing to ‘‘make some changes’’ seemingly influenced general manager Kyle Davidson’s sense of urgency
but Davidson’s quantity-over-quality offseason additions didn’t have the desired effect
Davidson will try to land a bigger fish this summer
but the Hawks also will work on improving their internal culture
‘‘I know fans and everybody want a quick answer
but this is the hard part of what we’re trying to accomplish,’’ Foligno said
You’re not doing it while everyone else is sitting idle; you’re doing it while other teams are getting better
to a man — whoever is going to be a part of this — understands the job that’s going to be needed down the stretch
into the summer and going into next season.’’
Foligno has talked with the guys about trying to give Hawks fans some highs to enjoy during the rest of this five-game homestand
which continues Wednesday against the Devils
The Hawks’ 14-17-4 home record isn’t nearly as bad as their 7-24-5 road record
but the 14 home victories are still the second-fewest in the NHL
NOTE: Forward Jason Dickinson will miss the rest of the season with a wrist injury
Defenseman Alec Martinez (upper body) is considered day-to-day
and forward Colton Dach (elbow) will miss some more time
his season is over after 59 games and only seven goals — down from 22 last season
