Growing sour cherries can be a valid alternative source of revenue
but only if professional criteria are used
Ivo Piombini is an entrepreneur from Formigine (Modena) who has been growing this fruit for years
"Traditional Modena sour cherries have been part of our range for over 20 years but
we decided to add another hectare in collaboration with the University of Modena and Reggio."
the new variety currently being tested at Piombini
Technical dataThe experimental orchard was set up in 2015 on approximately one hectare
comparing micro-propagated non-grafted Amarena del Rio plants in three different layouts: 4.0m x 1.0m (2500 trees / ha)
We have talked about it with Stefano Lugli from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia
high density works well with sour cherries
We opted for a Montmorency selection called Amarena del Rio
The orchard has been producing constant yields for five years: around 15-18 t/ha/year for higher densities (2,500 trees/ha)
13-15 t/ha/year for intermediate ones (1,650 trees/ha) and 10-12 t/ha/year for lower ones (1,250 trees/ha)"
Another positive aspect is the possibility of mechanizing the various operations
we employed mechanical topping and hedging
we will employ a strategy integrated with the possibility of alternating (every other year or every three years) mechanical (non selective) with manual (selective) pruning in order to obtain a better final quality
The next step will be the mechanization of harvesting operations as well."
SalesAzienda Piombini is equipped with a stoning system
"We started as we needed to have products for our company and our processed products
then we became a point of reference for the local territory and beyond
Ice-cream parlors and pastry shops looking for high-quality products also contact us
Our sour cherry jam is very popular and last year we also introduced lambrusco wine and sour cherry jam
fried sour cherries are a unique product that combines tradition and innovation."
But how profitable is a high-density orchard
"With productions of around 15 t/ha and a sales price of hand-picked high-quality produce of around €4-5/kg
The gross saleable production is 60 to 70,000 Euro/ha
and the net income is between 25 and 35 thousand Euro/ha
we would easily reach €50 thousand net per hectare."

Relaxing with a coffee in one of its squares is tranquillity itself
Behind the town's 13th-century castle and medieval ramparts
From a dormitory and rehearsal space in the town
a group of young musicians are reshaping and remaking the modern classical music concert with a remarkable spirit that crosses world-class performance standards with a rebellious
More socialist collective than musical organisation
Spira Mirabilis – literally a "miraculous spiral" – is the name these musicians have given themselves
alluding to the logarithmic spiral figure found in nature in a variety of states such as shells
They never work with conductors; there are no soloists
The only hierarchy appears to be one of ideas
a need for freedom from the usual constraints of the classical music industry
Planning a concert with them is thus not so much work as an adventure
And it looks to be the same when they make music
the no-conductor label always attracts interest
without one person in charge to keep time and articulate phrasing
Spira won't be appearing anywhere soon playing Stravinsky's Rite of Spring
or any of those other rhythmically complex scores that the 20th century excelled in
and they will need to have spent a lot more time than most orchestras rehearsing and agreeing on interpretation
this group of young (average age 26) musicians from all over the world – Italy
Australia and Israel – give a pretty unified answer
From their privileged positions as members of groups such as the Berlin Philharmonic and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe
they could easily have opted not to embark on their own risky experiments
But instead they have chosen to spend time away from their main jobs
rehearsing intensely for days on end in Formigine
because they feel that coming together in this way allows them to give a more powerful collective performance than when they are more simply following a conductor's lead
This approach has not been without its difficulties
For their first year they performed without pay
existing only on the sponsorship necessary to cover travel
the risk looks to have paid off; their interpretations of Beethoven and Schubert symphonies are increasingly being compared to those of the very best conductors
are an example of a new breed of classical musician who wants to take classical music out of its closed circle of admirers to a broader audience
almost burning belief in the need for classical music to be a mirror of
You can glimpse this in the UK in the approach of a variety of new groups: the Britten Sinfonia
the club nights mounted by the likes of Gabriel Prokofiev
or the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment's Night Shift series (advertising itself as "classical music minus the rules")
There is also an idealistic link with the Venezuelan Sistema and its UK offshoots and imitators
Big Noise and the London Music Masters' Bridge Project
Indeed it is no accident that Spira's UK debut next month follows the Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra of Venezuela's hugely successful debut two weeks ago
ties and clever manners to enjoy what we do
and you don't need to worry about knowing stuff about great composers; classical music is for everyone
Just bring your interest." This attitude is also driving the UK's larger orchestras: witness experiments such as the Philharmonia's Re-rite project last year
and the London Philharmonic's partnerships with both In Harmony and the Bridge Project
Could it be that there is a movement here and
This is probably the first major change in concert behaviour since the French Revolution
classical music concerts were often as much party as concert
But the opening decades of the 19th century popularised "serious" listening
which can make attending a classical music concert today resemble a form of high-class incarceration: keep still
don't expect the musicians on stage to talk to you
For many people who are not already members of the "club"
that's enough to ensure they never will be
They break many of these conventions every time they come on stage
they usually play only one piece of music in a concert
using it as a starting point for an evening of exploration as much as a concert
about what they are playing and why they play it as they do
we didn't have the goal to break away from the traditional formal concert
Actually we didn't have even the goal to play concerts
The choice of playing just one piece comes from the fact that during a 'Spira week' we study one work … We are very aware that building a strong and coherent idea of a piece for a group without a conductor is a long process
We are trying to find a common way to read the music and to react to each other so that many minds can work like a single one
not asking 'When is your concert?' but 'When is Beethoven Eight?' Suddenly our music is again part of the vocabulary of the people around us."
Spira also make sure that many of their concerts take place in the midst of the community
"From the start we decided to work outside of the mainstream musical circuit," Lorenza says
isolated venues in which we could experiment
and in which we could present our work to an audience likely not to have heard the piece before
therefore lacking any kind of preconception."
The results are explosive: the highest quality of performance tied to an intensity of communication and risk in concerts that seems designed equally for first-timers and experts
When I first heard this group – playing to an audience of non-specialists in a free series in the middle of Frankfurt – the audience reaction was awe-inspiring
their concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall next week will not actually be their UK debut
in an unannounced secret London market location
creating a spontaneous audience out of whoever happens to be out and about doing their shopping at that moment
The orchestra likes to insist on these "guerrilla concerts" wherever it goes
If you are lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time then you're in for some real fireworks this November

23 May 2022 – Pagani Automobili is going to take part in the fourth Motor Valley Fest in Emilia-Romagna
The area that thirty years ago welcomed Horacio Pagani and his visionary idea of building dream cars now sees the brand stand proudly alongside the legendary names in the automotive industry
an example of Italian excellence in the world
the festival is going to take place in the city of Modena
Named as a Unesco World Heritage Site for its art and architecture
Modena provides the perfect backdrop for the presentation of the Pagani hypercars
the principle inspired by Leonardo da Vinci on which the company bases its philosophy and its creations
For Pagani Automobili the 2022 Motor Valley Fest is all about the Huayra
of which it will be showing a very special version in Piazza Mazzini
a one-off coupé created as a collaboration between the client and Pagani Special Projects
the division that builds the Atelier’s highly personalised limited-edition vehicles
With its ad hoc configuration including a colour palette and livery designed specifically for the lines of the car
the Huayra NC is a road vehicle that loves the racetrack
incorporating performance-enhancing innovations in the structure
the car delivers up to 830 HP and 1080 Nm of torque
Enhanced performance is accompanied by a 7-gear sequential transmission
Pirelli Trofeo R tyres and an aerodynamic design to ensure balance in all driving conditions
All this in a vehicle weighing just 1,240 kg
visitors to the exhibition in the central square in Modena will also see the Pagani Imola
of which just five examples have been built
it is a car born with a racing personality
yet it can be driven on every road all over the world
the key attraction on the Military Academy’s stand will be the Huayra R
the latest vehicle from the Pagani Atelier
which is making its first appearance in Italy
an implementation of cutting-edge technology contained in just 1,050 kg
Motor Valley Fest also involves Modena’s neighbouring towns
where Piazza Castello will provide the stage for the Huayra BC
a car designed as a road vehicle but with the power to generate powerful emotions on the racetrack
refinement and attention to details that characterise the hypercars can also be seen in the boutique collections: the pop-up shop in Piazza Mazzini offers a range of clothing
accessories and collectable items with the Pagani Automobili signature
brand enthusiasts will have the opportunity to visit the Horacio Pagani Museum and the Atelier in San Cesario Sul Panaro

It is rehearsal time for the players of Spira mirabilis
