One of the most important retrospectives dedicated to Eugenio Cecconi (Livorno
1903) a painter friend of the Macchiaioli and authentic witness of a Tuscany made up of countryside
comes to life in Forte dei Marmi from May 31 to November 9
takes place at Forte Leopoldo I and is promoted by the Municipality of Forte dei Marmi together with the Society of Fine Arts
under the curatorship of Elisabetta Matteucci. The exhibition offers an itinerary divided into seven thematic sections
designed to restore the expressive complexity of an artist capable of transforming the simple and austere life of the Maremma countryside into art
dense with works selected from different moments of Cecconi’s career
embraces multiple genres and subjects: from imposing landscape views to intense hunting scenes
from animal portraits to representations of the “proud women” of the rural world
who was Cecconi’s friend and sincere admirer
had this to say of his famous dog portraits
“There are people in Cecconi’s dogs.” An observation that accurately captures the psychological gaze with which the artist also approached animal subjects
“When Cecconi paints a dog,” Signorini added
"he makes a moral portrait of it and makes clear what he has already done and what he is about to do
A sensitivity that also extends to thehuman universe
especially in scenes of rural life where every gesture
is captured with empathy and without rhetoric
Cecconi has been able to capture the silent dignity of rural life
chicken or orange sellers - take on the stature of authentic “Madonnas of the harvest,” portrayed with features that recall an Etruscan beauty and epic austerity
offering a powerful social portrait of an era and a territory
Cecconi distinguishes himself by a style far removed from that of coeval English official painting
Here it is not a matter of cold aristocratic documentation
of an experience that the artist really shared
returning to the canvas its vibrant emotion
a pretext to tell the story of man immersed in nature and its primordial rhythms
emphasizes how "in Cecconi an intimate bond with Nature and in particular with the genius loci
is evident.“ This bond emerges strongly from the first sections of the exhibition
such as ”Light of Etruria," in which landscapes and rural scenes related to the Tuscan areas dear to the artist
Works such as Il ritorno delle fienaiole or Caccia alle folaghe restore the slow and solemn rhythm of life in the fields
in the section “Maremma fatale e fatata,” we enter the wild heart of a mythical and unspoiled territory
Here Maremma is represented not only in its physical dimension
where painting becomes a participatory and authentic gesture
In the central sections of the exhibition - “Chasing the Prey” and “Giving Way to the Boots” - the practice of hunting is transformed into a narrative and poetic key
Cecconi stages the hunt with an intensity that oscillates between lyricism and epic
the return: each moment becomes an opportunity to narrate the deep identity of a rural community
The works in these sections testify to the artist’s ability to capture movement
but also to freeze the moment with an almost photographic precision
are among Cecconi’s most beloved subjects and find their place in the section “The Faithful Friend.” Here
through portraits rich in nuance and meaningful gestures
the intelligence in the gaze: everything is returned with an impressive mimetic force
capable of moving even the contemporary viewer
in the section “The Proud Women,” a gallery of portraits opens paying homage to female strength in the agricultural world
With a sensibility rooted in Renaissance tradition but with a modern gaze
Cecconi celebrates female figures as true guardians of the land
sculpted by fatigue but animated by a natural elegance that the artist knows how to capture and sublimate
The exhibition does not intend to limit itself to presenting Cecconi’s pictorial work
it intends to reconstruct the identity of a complex artist
animated by a sensibility that Guido Biagi
described as “a sensitive and working soul.” Through Cecconi’s paintings
a portrait is composed of a man who knew how to live his own time with intensity and transfigure it into art
making eternal what is often considered ephemeral: the daily gesture

Tuscany in the off season showcases a different side to the Italian region
My husband and I sit down for a leisurely lunch of spaghetti with seafood and a crispy fritto misto at the Bagno Assunta beach club in Forte dei Marmi
It’s a warm spring day in May—lively but not crowded is the vibe we prefer
but it can be challenging to find that balance
The entire region’s population is around 3.75 million
While the majority of tourists go in the summer
there’s so much to do during Tuscany’s off season—which is from around October through April—if you know how
Part of the problem with overtourism in Tuscany stems from the way people treat it as a hit-and-run destination
barely staying long enough to check off the bucket list sights and then moving on to the next place
This kind of tourism is antithetical to the true Tuscan way of life
The months outside of peak season are a great time to embrace simple pleasures
like long lunches and days spent relaxing at the beach with a good book
In Forte dei Marmi I rode around on a bicycle and ate fresh oysters and seafood-topped bruschette at Pesce Baracca
finding artisanal delights like the beautiful baskets at La Cesteria and Giovanni del Forte’s shoe collection
made by a shoemaker who’s been there for more than 40 years
The low season seems to be getting shorter every year
especially in popular destinations like Florence
Peak season is generally the height of summer
when kids are off from school and families seize the chance to travel
the only crowd-free time of year now is winter
If you’re going to visit Tuscany’s beaches
summer is still your best bet in terms of weather
as beach towns like Forte dei Marmi and Porto Ercole tend to shut down in the winter and reopen in the spring
Be aware that some hotels and resorts close for at least a couple of months in the wintertime
consider visiting in the shoulder seasons (April and May or September and October)
but it’s absolutely packed with artistic treasures that are less of a headache to visit without the summer flock of tourists
You need at least three or four days just to see the essentials
exploring neighborhoods like Oltrarno and Sant’Ambrogio for less crowded food markets and boutique shops
And while you could take a day trip from Florence to Siena
it’s worth spending a few days in the countryside or on the coast
is also known for a sheep’s milk cheese called pecorino di Pienza
Wandering around the medieval town of Certaldo feels like stepping back in time; you can take your time over lunch and buy ceramics made by local artisans
Another way to enjoy Tuscany in its off season is to book experiences, such as winery tours and cooking classes. Many wineries also serve lunch, so you can do a tour and tasting in the late morning and then sit down to a nice meal. Or spend the morning learning how to make local specialties like pici pasta and chicken cacciatore with a local chef like cookbook author Giulia Scarpaleggia
Borgo Santo Pietro is one of the best places to stay in Tuscany
Forte dei Marmi has a few luxury resorts, but if you prefer a more intimate experience, book a room at the family-run Villa Roma Imperiale, which was built as a private villa and has just 32 rooms, some of which open directly onto the garden and pool. La Roqqa is a new hotel in Porto Ercole
with a sleek contemporary design and a chic beach club on a secluded cove
and infinity pool overlooking the rolling hills

He loved Forte dei Marmi and Versilia very much
He is one of the most important Italian scientists of all time
named after the yacht where Marconi lived and worked together with his wife and daughter
two of the crucial female figures in his life
the first to believe in him and encourage him in his research work
as Marconi usually called her - and Elettra
in the year in which we celebrate 150 years since the birth of the great inventor
from her marriage to Prince Carlo Giovanelli
It was 1937 when her father died suddenly in Rome
a few hours after accompanying Cristina to catch the train to Versilia
where they would have celebrated Elettra’s seventh birthday
She still loves to return to Forte dei Marmi
Elettra Marconi with her mother Maria Cristina Bezzi-ScaliCan you tell us about the meeting between your father and your mother
She and a friend of hers had been invited to an evening on board the yacht Elettra
she had long blonde hair that framed big blue eyes
My father sent a motorboat to pick them up on shore
He welcomed all the guests and the moment their eyes met as my mother climbed the ladder turned into an encounter that lasted a lifetime
You lived the first years of your life on board the Elettra
Did you ever take part in any of your father’s experiments
Sometimes he called me and my mother while he communicated via radio with the most distant countries
to let us hear when the sound was crisp and clear
Then there was the period in which he worked on the invention of radar
then we helped him put up some white sheets so that he couldn’t see anything and
he gave the helmsman instructions to pass exactly in the middle
He wanted to enable those who sailed to do so without risking collisions with other ships
He wanted to protect the lives of seafarers (unfortunately the invention of radar did not arrive in time to completely avoid the Titanic tragedy
but it was thanks to Marconi’s radio that they managed to call for help and save the survivors
Then there are also other inventions that he was working on and that he would certainly have completed if he had not died so soon
Among these there could also have been the cell phone..
In 1931 he invented the first radio telephone for Pope Pius
It was a kind of precursor of the cell phone
and he already imagined a world where we could talk to each other remotely with “a little box in our pocket”
What relationship did your father have with Forte dei Marmi
I know that there are memories of the Elettra moored at Franceschi’s Capannina
he had time to see little more than the birth of what was one of the great innovations in Versilia
so he only spent a couple of evenings there with my mother
because that is where my mother had grown up
This is how it became a special place for me too

The light of the sun bathes the landscape in a soft
carrying a hint of the weekend's impending heat
I’m handed the keys to my car for the weekend
A masterpiece of Italian automotive design
blending classic elegance with modern performance
aerodynamic lines and sculpted curves exude sophistication
It’s about now that I realise I may be in at the deep end; I’ve found myself on Ferrari's woman’s only tour
It's only the third time the tour has ever taken place
taking place in the fairytale location of Forte dei Marmi
Since this exquisite Ferrari is mine only for the weekend
and this switch engages ‘wet mode’ if it rains
though I'm praying I won't need this in late May in Italy
Rosso Corsa isn't merely a colour; it's a symbol of passion and precision engineering
As we leave the cars for a tour of the new boutique and factory
I'm introduced to the women who will share this experience with me
I can't help but feel a touch underdressed and awed by the Ferrari-owning glitterati surrounding me
the sophisticated drivers I’m accompanying are already well-versed in the nuances of the cars
Satisfied with a bite at Ristorante Cavallino
The group is split into three and the first to go are the speed-hungry
Amongst the earliest drivers are those with fully custom cars
with engines made road-worthy enough to tear around the streets as you would a track
hoping for a more relaxing cruise down to the coast
Driving through the hills of Tuscany on the third women's only tour
winding through mountainous terrain — it feels like a dream where I embody power and elegance
albeit with a touch of overwhelming exhilaration
I feel the immersive energy of the Ferrari consumes me
a reality check: this may feel like the quietest mountainous road in Italy
It dawns on me that I may be a little too focused on the thrill
I feel a tinge of apprehension — could I be in trouble
as I leisurely sip on a Coke and admire the breathtaking view
the true might of the Ferrari becomes evident
strategically stationed to witness the spectacle of 25 Ferraris that blitz past them on the ascent
I grasp the respect this car effortlessly commands
Molly takes in the long white sand beaches and marble mountains
passing through the mountains and turning heads in quaint villages
a former tiny fisherman community nestled between white marble mountains and expansive white sand beaches
I relinquish the wheel to another driver and take the passenger seat
It's not long before I realise I very much prefer being in the driver's seat; heights aren't exactly my forte
Our journey takes us to the renowned Fiammetta marble factory
though the much-anticipated exploration of marble caves is derailed by unseasonable late-May rain
with the sun breaking through the clouds of Le Spezia
I chat with the other drivers on the tour and realise the true reason this women’s only Ferrari tour is so important and special
these tours allow women who love to drive the space to enjoy the thrill in a glamorous
and I’m told we're all driving just as fast as the men do
The final night of the tour brings with it the chance to party alongside the other drivers
and we head to the glamorous Twigga Club to dance the night away
Among the names that have helped make Forte dei Marmi not only an exclusive maritime location
but also a destination with a strong gastronomic streak
today the Vaiani&Vaiani group has five addresses in town including the Bistrot
driven by a desire to open a sign meant to be “lively” from morning until dinner
A place where local raw material is interpreted in different concepts: from the venue that offers the most traditional interpretation of seafood cuisine
to the street food ideal for a quick break
to the delicatessen where you can buy ready-made products at the fish counter
where you can choose your catch (arriving daily from the Viareggio fish market and the dense network of local fishermen)
get advice on recipes and cooking times of ingredients
or even have your selected fish prepared and cooked according to your tastes
“Pesce Baracca is a place studied in every detail
with an open kitchen where fresh pasta and pastry products are made,” says Andrea Mattei
executive chef and supervisor of the Vaiani family's restaurants
the Pietrasanta chef returned to his homeland in 2018 after working alongside masters such as Alain Ducasse and the late Angelo Paracucchi
“I started as a commis at the Hotel Byron in Forte dei Marmi
before returning here in 2003 and receiving my first Michelin star
an experience I was lucky enough to repeat at Borgo San Pietro
when I received the recognition from the Guide one year after my arrival," Andrea says
Andrea Mattei has been working in synergy with the Vaiani for six years now
being able to count on a project that has taken a quantum leap
thanks also to the purchase of a farm in Lucca
we have a hospitality side with ad hoc catering services
and in addition we can count on a processing laboratory
where we prepare the lines for the different restaurants
such as tomato purees or fruit compotes,” reveals the chef
can also rely on the trustworthiness of the cooks within the team
“Erjon Leshi is the chef of Pesce Baracca and has been working with the Vaiani family for 25 years now
chef of Pesce Terrazza for the past 5 years." But what is the difference between the two restaurants
“At Pesce Baracca the proposal is more informal
on the menu you can still find the family's historical dishes
a recipe invented by Piero Vaiani in 1964
At Pesce Terrazza, on the other hand, the culinary philosophy focuses on aperitifs and sharing dishes, cocktails and tapas, with excellent quality raw material. These include Coda Nera smoked salmon from Mosaic Food Experience
the line designed for gourmet dining by La Nef
a Marche-based company founded in 1989 by Giordano Palazzo
I'd call it a tapas bar with a creative and fashionable outlet,” says Andrea Mattei
interprets Blacktail salmon with different preparations: from the Welcome Montaditos with herb cream cheese
marinated onion to the version with sour cream
lemon compote and chives to the Tartare with avocado hummus
“These are all ingredients designed to make you feel every nuance of flavor of Coda Nera,” clarifies the chef
who of the Mosaico Food Experience line also extols the qualities of Le Grand Blanc
wild cod that meets modern consumption requirements
so it is already desalted and easy and quick to prepare
“I created a recipe where the cod is cooked in tempura
cut into bite-sized pieces and rested on top of a chutney made with tomatoes from our garden."
Cut the cod into cubes about 3 cm on each side
chili pepper and basil in extra virgin oil
stew for 7 to 8 minutes over a gentle heat
douse with vinegar and cook for about 15 min
For aioli sauce: blanch garlic cloves 3 times in water
add sunflower seed oil in a drizzle and whisk like a mayonnaise
For the tempura: mix the two flours and add the sparkling water
Toss the codfish in the well-chilled tempura and cook in the hot seed oil
Place the chutney on the bottom of the plate
add the cod bites and finish with the aioli sauce

owner of the famous Michelin-starred Lorenzo restaurant in Forte dei Marmi
is one of the figures who helped turn this resort into an international gastronomic icon
His adventure in catering began in his homeland
but it was in 1981 that he landed in Forte dei Marmi
launching a project that would redefine culinary excellence in the area
Today his daughter Chiara carries on the restaurant's history with experience and passion
We publish the interview conducted for Firenze made in Tuscany Summer in 2017
Let's start with a bit of amarcord: the opening date of your restaurant
from a well-known trattoria to a restaurant recognised by all the guides as one of the best
every evening for me is an emotion that is renewed
Your first dinner at your place: what dish should you try
There have always been dishes on the menu that we call historic
such as the bavette on fish and the nature of baby squid in the oven
which I research and choose every day with maniacal attention
Which today has the taste of the forbidden
The Versilia that my great-uncle Lorenzo Viani - one of the most dazzling expressions of 20th-century Italy - portrayed is an unprecedented Versilia: a sea that grants and takes away
Viani paints faces that express the tragic fate of those condemned to wait
In one of his pages - from Il nano e la statua nera (The Dwarf and the Black Statue) - we read: ‘The distant docks
are thick with trees on which the flagpoles cross each other in sign of grief; on the carabots
If the weather and the sea permit on the Gombo
my boat where I eat my catch of the day with the rezzaglio
or the muscles gathered on the rocks in front of the San Rossore estate
A view that tells of the ancient soul of these places
The profile of the sandy shore with its typical dunes
the scent of the undergrowth and the pine forest
and - to paraphrase D'Annunzio - ‘on one side to the east
A new restaurant will be opening at the Twiga Monte-Carlo
Three months ago, the Italian press announced the Twiga takeover by LMDV Capital. The acquisition of the brand launched by Flavio Briatore is now official.
The deal includes four venues: Twiga Forte dei Marmi, Twiga Monte Carlo, Twiga Baia Beniamin and the Billionaire restaurant in Porto Cervo, which will be renamed Twiga next season.
According to Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio, Chairman of LMDV Capital, the deal represents an investment of €50 million. LMDV Capital is aiming to strengthen its luxury restaurant business in Italy and the Principality through its subsidiary Triple Sea Food.
Development projects are planned in Forte dei Marmi, Monte Carlo and Porto Cervo, including opening a new Vesta restaurant in Monaco.
Flavio Briatore, who is letting go of Twig to focus on his Formula 1 projects
said on his Instagram account: “Twiga has been an icon of luxury entertainment and one of our group’s most prestigious brands
the time has come to entrust it to an entity capable of enhancing its future with an ambitious and structured vision,” said Flavio Briatore on his Instagram account
“LMDV Hospitality has the potential to take Twiga to a new level
respecting its DNA while paving the way for new growth opportunities
I wish Leonardo Maria and the Triple Sea Food team every success for the future.” he added
said in a statement to Il Corriere della Serra: “Having built a solid identity with Triple Sea Food
we are now accelerating on our path as we take Twiga on board…”
“This transaction is not just an acquisition
entertainment and lifestyle merge to create iconic destinations that set trends and attract an international audience…”
There is still a somewhat retro air among the traditional gazebos of the Forte dei Marmi ‘bagni’ or beach resorts
The colors of the beach huts alternate one behind the other in a game of imperceptible contrasts
white linen dresses flutter at the water’s edge waiting for an aperitif at sunset
you can almost feel that slow-flowing seaside life
That scent of spaghetti with clams that you look forward to all year round
the distant chatter in the shade from the first rays of the sun
Modernity has also arrived here but has not erased the vintage charm of the villas overlooking the sea
where a seaside holiday becomes an enchanting story to remember and tell
Always a favourite destination for great poets such as Montale
Alpemare Beach Club is a magical place where la dolcevita has never waned
Thanks to the Bocelli family who completely renovated the old “bathing establishment”
transforming it into a relaxing oasis for its customers
a combination of innovation and total respect for tradition
but also discretion and attention to the customer’s needs are the core values at Alpemare
The restaurant is at the complete disposal of guests and offers a simple but not obvious biodynamic cuisine that includes refined
creative combinations that appeal to all 5 senses
Maitó Beach Club From the long experience of the Maitó restaurant
protagonist of the Versilia scene since the roaring 1960s
comes the refined hospitality of the Maitó Beach Club
one of the novelties of the summer in Forte dei Marmi
The majestic power of the Maitò 1960 comes from the merger of the Maitò restaurant
the Maitò beach and the former Orsa Maggiore bathing establishment
which allowed for the creation of a 300-square-metre swimming pool with extra-luxury facilities
hydromassage areas and a beautiful corner bar
sipping a cocktail in the sun and experiencing dreamlike emotions in an elegant and relaxed atmosphere
1 heated saltwater pool and the opportunity to enjoy many water sports
Augustus Beach Club is a glamorous oasis with typical fortemarmine tents set up with every comfort to make your days on the beach even more enjoyable
offers an à la carte menu with specialties borne of the area's typical biodiversity
for a culinary experience to be discovered every day
Bambaissa organizes private dinners under tents by the sea
Bagno PieroFrom the Agnelli to the Barilla families
Bagno Piero has been hosting the big names in Italian industry and beyond since the 1930s
where there are still wooden beach huts with terracotta tile roofs
giving Versilia back that romantic and even slightly retro atmosphere that characterized the holidays of times past
The ideal location for lunch with the scent of clams
and a holiday to be enjoyed in the shade of the seafront canopies that still flutter
the Remo Beach Club is the place to experience the beauty of the sea and the rhythm of Fortemarmina summer events
The traditional green roller blinds tell the beautiful story of the ancient and elegant flavor of Versilia
Behind the large tents that tell the story of summer
traditional wooden cabins welcome guests to a space equipped with every comfort
spaces for relaxation and a service that can meet every need
make Remo Beach Club a magical space where to experience summer at the Fort
Bagno SilvioA veritable institution in Versilia
Bagno Silvio has been run by the Dazzi family for over five generations
It was 1919 and the capital of Versilia nightlife was becoming a holiday destination for several noble families such as that of Cavaliere Alfredo Susini
who had bought a seafront villa with a small adjoining beach
Pietro Dazzi had been entrusted with maintenance of the garden
Pietro suggested to the owner that it could be taken care of by his son Silvio
until the Cavaliere offered it under management to Silvio
It is the ideal place to enjoy Versilia’s most authentic flavours
including the famous Silvio’s anchovies and linguine with scampi and lime
Bagno GildaWe are in the realm of Riccardo Di Giovanni
owner of the historic and elegant Bagno Gilda
A charming establishment that has always made its history and love for its customers its stylistic features
A veranda awaits you 80 metres from the sea where you can taste the most delicious Versilia and seafood specialities
opening times: 12/15 for lunch; 19/22 for dinner
Bagno AlcioneOne of the longest-established names of the coast
relaxation and elegance are the watchwords
Bagno Alcione has modernized and refined its services
which serves not only the freshest classic seafood dishes
is another of the many and varied services on offer
which include plenty of entertainment for children
Despite the new features and more innovative structure
renovations have always managed to preserve the vintage charm given by the gazebos that have always been a feature of this beach club
Bagno Santa Maria Bagno Santa Maria was bought by the Pinzauti family
who fell in love with this little gem that has remained unchanged over the years
The new owners have renovated it without changing its more traditional soul
Bagno Santa Maria preserves the Forte dei Marmi-style of the early 60s
with the traditional green wooden cabins and tamarisks that protect the interior lounges from the wind
A beach where guests’ peace and privacy are paramount
and a restaurant that offers simple but refined dishes for a lunch overlooking the sea
where spaghetti with clams is always on the menu
carefree atmosphere where summer is to be enjoyed to the fullest
after almost a century of history it continues to charm Italian and foreign tourists with increasingly innovative services
Modernity and tradition blend on the wide golden beach
guarantee a holiday dedicated to relaxation and privacy
and set of beach towels for a holiday where no comfort is spared
The restaurant has an enchanting terrace overlooking the sea
where the colors of the tables and chairs reflect the blue of the sea
Among the restaurant’s specialties are spaghetti with clams
Bagno America came into being in the Seventies
It is located to the east of Forte dei Marmi
the most famous part of the town where over time well to do Italian and foreign families have built their villas
including intellectuals and members of the jet set
come together in Forte dei Marmi with its particular lifestyle
Paolo and his wife Marcella built Bagno America
now managed by their daughter Veronica and her husband Cristiano
elegance and simplicity and a constant endeavour to put guests at ease in a family environment
Among the services offered are a sailing school for children and teenagers
excursions in a private boat with skipper to explore the myriad inlets of the Ligurian coast
and hikes in the Apuan Alps with a mountain guide
The awarding of cult dishes at La Capannina in Forte dei Marmi
The gourmet show at the Capannina proclaiming the Piatto Forte 2023 starts on 2 July with the presentation of the dishes and ends with the award ceremony on 9 July
From 28 to 30 May The Circolo del Tennis Firenze 1898 hosts the second edition of the competition
18 awards from our region: the whole list province by province
On one side the sharp white profile of the Apuan Alps
in front the calm mirror of the sea and the immaculate cabanas
all around the string of villas among the pines and the countryside fading into the distance
You can even glimpse the silhouette of Elba Island
set against a spur of Liguria from the top floor of the Principe Hotel in Forte dei Marmi
An everyday experience that Valentino Cassanelli
among the most convincing talents of the young guard
has elected as the theme of his creativity
Cassanelli had already gotten us accustomed
he engraves the paradox of being here and elsewhere
on the tightrope of a trajectory that has no boundaries
It is known: language is all the more poetic
But the horizon is by definition how much it blurs: that vagueness that in Italian (and only in Italian) stands for grace
with the material effects that come with it: Lux Lucis
the dining service and kitchen fit together to the millimeter
so much so that it would be almost impossible to imagine Cassanelli's dishes without the glass chosen for the purpose by Sokol Ndreko
The professional symbiosis between the two
is becoming increasingly accomplished and is now expanding to include new figures
who formerly worked for the legendary Merlo di Camaiore
The menu is called “Versilia in Movimento,” because
the local ingredients are contaminated there with spices
Then there are several routes: Vegetalmente
where vegetables are interpreted in a brackish key
to convey the gustatory stamp of the house; Litorale
with seafood dishes; and Orizzonti on the road
where otherness is not consumed by getting on and off a plane
but approached patiently as the matter slowly moves
but the advice is not to miss pairing at 75
Orizzonti is structured in a sequence of moments
And the impression is that of an increasingly confident and elegant young maturity
allowing us to work with freedom of means and thought
We are no longer the ones who do weird things in Forte: when they want something different
they will find the comfortable aspect and care for the area around
lack of time and staff could lead to straighter tastes
Horizon is etymologically that which limits
And here is the oxymoron of a “Alba di Mezzogiorno,” (Midday Sunrise) that is
a cacciucco raviolo with lots of mullet and a mullet filet in sashimi
Ndreko pours a 1983 Schwaab-Adams Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Mosel Riesling
buffering the vegetal freshness with the softness of residual sugar
"Ricordo futuro" or “Future Remembrance” is instead a signature of the house: the coffee mackerel with snail panna cotta
slightly revised in the preparation of the fish
but marinated and then roasted on the skin
with the addition of a little pulp in the panna cotta to bind
The pairing is a dazzling Poiré pear cider from Bordelet
loaded with aromaticity and sweetness but only on the nose
with the bubbly finishing to mop up the fattiness of the blue fish
Because a menu that explores horizons calls for a range of provenances and types
“Litorale” is called the cooked and raw royal langoustine
another typical ingredient for example of "cecina"
cypress for the balsamic of the early hinterland
and tomato wafers for the slight acidity and heat of summer
The identity of Versilia in a most elegant bite
then marks the transition to the first courses
These are tamarind mezze maniche with typical murici alla marinara
"For years we have been trying to contrast the sweetness of the starches with the acidity of the cooking liquid
which makes the pasta itself taste twofold
The garnish is murici alla marinara with garlic sauce and an emulsion of livers and scraps in tamarind broth." The black fish
the pelagic fish is prepared “Mediterranean style,” that is
marinated in miso with the addition of elderberries
The side dishes are seasonal vegetables in their simplicity: marinated cucumber
This is followed by “Rurale,” Cinta Senese piglet with mango agresto and wild boar peposo
"It tells the story of the roughness of the Tuscan hinterland
in the product and in the mention of peposo
an ancient recipe varied with a part wild boar base
then stored and emulsified with ripe mango pulp."
“Salmastro” is a dish composed of Garfagnana spelt cooked in reduced beef broth and miso
whipped with Parmigiano and topped in contrast with a raw mantis shrimp seasoned with lemon oil and Sansho pepper
saltiness of land and sea: the stamp of my cooking.” And here it's the turn of Testa di Luppolo beer
countered by the savoriness of the cicadas
while the citrusy bounce of lemon and creaminess works
whose sweetness is contrasted by a roasted sea anemone onion “Genoese” sauce
plus Mediterranean herb green sauce and 'nduja oil for spiciness and animal fat
"Breeze", served on a spoon made from local marble
lemon sea water air and sea herbs and caviar
Before "Notte marina", Angiolini's faux chocolate rocks with Volterra salt
and basil for a post-summer grilling beach sensation
The pairing is a drink inspired by the classic chocolate-rhum combination
but he recalled a Jamaican rum that was distinctly reminiscent of banana leaf
so I thought of adding a liquid that would make the distillate more versatile and fluid in drinking
The sweet extraction takes place at controlled temperatures
developing notes of cooked chestnut and conceptually of marron glacé
but also structure of the distillate to cleanse."
Closes the small of “Siamo alla frutta,” (litteraly "we are at the fruit" meaning at the end of the meal or game) a fruit salad of anti-waste processing including quinoa and pineapple chips

a dreamy destination just a two-hour flight away
After landing in Pisa and picking up our hire car
we couldn’t miss out on paying a quick visit to the famous Leaning Tower before setting off to the coast
Any grumbles about our 6am flight were soon forgotten as we managed to nab a parking spot in the city centre
just a two-minute walk from this busy tourist attraction
We captured the iconic “holding up the tower” picture (of course) and grabbed a quick bite to eat in the square before the crowds flooded in
We then set off to our accommodation, the trendy La Serena hotel in Forte dei Marmi
a 40-minute drive from Pisa – and a place that was to take us by complete surprise
As you drive into this Tuscan coastal town you’re instantly blown away by the stunning views: mountains to one side
a long beachfront to the other and a bustling
It was like we had stepped into a VIP village; lined with rows of exclusive beach clubs
One of the highlights of La Serena is the huge range of sculptures and artwork inside; it really is an interior design lover’s heaven
These are created by various artists in residence
and sometimes you can even see them in action
From the impressive wine cellar to modern seating areas and gingham umbrellas
there isn’t one area that doesn’t have an artistic flare
The hotel’s stylish vibes continue in the decadent bar and restaurant boasting exquisite dishes
with an irresistible cocktail menu to match
Heading out from La Serena to the beach for a sunset stroll one evening
we noticed the cycle path that runs the whole way along the beachfront; now it became clear that the rows of colourful bikes outside the hotel weren’t just for show
we hired a couple of electric bikes (if you’ve never had a go on one of these before
they’re a total game-changer) and it was one of the highlights
They were especially handy for getting into the town centre
There’s a big choice of beautiful beach clubs to lounge around in, each with stylish sunbathing decks and luxe restaurants. We booked lunch at Gilda one day (the best
and the chic décor and fresh seafood were divine
It’s essential to book in advance to get a reservation here
A local market comes to Forte dei Marmi every Wednesday and Saturday
and this isn’t just any market – think high-quality Italian linens and leathers at affordable prices
The clothing was impeccable and we bagged a few goodies
It’s certainly a contrast from the surrounding high-end designer shops
along with a few more affordable boutiques
means there’s something to satisfy any shopper’s budget
You can’t come to Italy and not ask the locals to recommend the best pizza joint
and on their recommendation we took a 15-minute drive to Pizzeria Pizzarda in the neighbouring town
and you can see the pizzas being made in front of you
The locals weren’t wrong; the homemade sauces and dough were on a different level
resulting in the tastiest pizzas we’d ever tried
the little-known beach town favoured by the Italian elite
Likened to the Côte d’Azur, come and rub shoulders with the Italian elite in Forte dei Marmi
I arrive at the Italian resort of Forte dei Marmi
just as the beach clubs are unpacking their sunbeds to position on immaculately raked sands
In late April it’s still a little chilly in the morning, but by lunchtime I’m settling down in a deckchair to order a Campari spritz at sun-dappled Alpemare
the beach club belonging to legendary Italian tenor
as this is the most sought-after of Forte dei Marmi’s bagnos
where the rich and famous mingle over seafood lunches
Today, though, I have the restored 1920s bathing gem, with turquoise-blue changing huts and elegant cabanas
and the invitation from the friendly waiter is to “fai con calma (take it easy)”
READ MORE: Get away from the tourists in Italy
Although tourism began here in the late 1800s
it was the likes of Sophia Loren who put the resort on the map
Once Luciano Visconti and Giorgio Armani snapped up villas here
but there have been some notable foreign interlopers
among them Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
whose cream villa circled with cypress trees sits in Vittoria Apuana
I’m staying at hotel La Serena
which has recently enjoyed a major refurbishment
It is a breath of fresh air among Forte’s extravagantly priced
and a garden and pool shaded by soaring umbrella pines
The abundance of artworks (two towering sculptural figures, recently acquired from the Venice Biennial, are a talking point), and an elegant bar and restaurant
but there’s nothing pretentious about the place
Informality in practice includes the gratis lunch (think hot seafood salad
and focaccia) left out for guests to tuck into
and the complimentary green bicycles (both electric and push variety)
“Let us know if you need anything,” I’m reminded frequently. I’m not sure what else would make my stay more complete as my garden suite is vast, with a ‘60s inspired designer leather bed, and a Carrera marble bathroom with views of the mountains it was chiselled from
On my private terrace, I sit amid pots of wisteria, sipping a local Eco di Mare white wine
and enjoying the view over rooftops to the ocean
There’s no doubt that I’m living the dolce vita
Eighty beach clubs line Forte’s wide sandy beach
from those that offer old-world charm such as Augustus
to more budget-friendly places such as Bagno Sacro Cuore
The retro signage of each plays a huge part in Forte’s cultural heritage
with the oldest dating to the 1930s (don’t miss those of Camilla
By electric bike
is the nicest way to reach the neighbouring resort of Viareggio (a 30km round trip)
although it’s now a little tired in places
the liberty-style architecture (Italy’s answer to Art Nouveau) is joyous
Among the most beautiful is Bagno Martinelli with its bulbous cupola and decorative plaster work
and Gran Caffe Margherita (where composer Puccini liked to hang out)
for its colourful domes and oriental design
Back in Forte I take a leisurely passeggiata (slow
where arbored trees etch marble-paved piazzas
lined with cafes and the boutiques of Italian design giants
I happen across the studio of artisan clog-maker
crammed with made-to-measure wooden foot moulds
is where you’ll find clothes (a great buy are the cotton sweaters from local brand
lunch on well-stuffed focaccia (try the Pastrami with pickles) at All’ Antico Vinaio
It’s not until you gaze back on the town from the end of this 275m jetty that Forte’s full beauty unfolds
set as it is against the majestic Apuan alps
The cities of Lucca, Pisa, and Florence are all within an easy train journey, as is the Unesco World Heritage Site of Cinque Terre – a string of five coastal towns
but during quieter months a car is preferable
where I zig-zag from the top of town and the pretty belltower through narrow alleyways to the harbour
where rocks are splashed by crystal-clear blue water
Five kilometres from Forte is the pine-scented hill town of Pietrasanta
famed for its galleries and public artworks
The first you’ll see is Colombian artist Botero’s immense bronze warrior sculpture
it’s Rachel Lee Hovnanian’s giant Poor Teddy in Repose that takes centre stage
coming to work with marble quarried from the nearby Carrera mines
Botero’s frescoes - Porta del Paradiso (Gate of Heaven)
are extraordinary (look for Mother Teresa and Hitler among his trademark rotund figures)
Back beachside in Forte, at family-owned Ristorante Gilda
I tuck into a delicious seafood fritto misto
saving room for Grandma’s dessert (aged 70
you’ll find her in the kitchen making her trademark torta della nonna)
the toast of salute is to the joys of travelling out of season when the weather is pleasant
and no need to suck in my stomach (thankfully
the supermodels in Gucci bikinis are yet to arrive)
Fly from Auckland to Rome with Qatar Airways
Singapore Airlines or Emirates with one stopover
or take the train in three hours and 50 minutes (fastest service)
Doubles at La Serena from $452 on a B&B basis. The property is open from April until the end of October. laserenahotel.it
