MENDON, N.Y. -- Heroin and other drug abuse continues to be an issue in Monroe County. Thursday night, a panelist of community leaders and anti-drug advocates tackled the issue head on at a town hall meeting in Mendon. They discussed what they have seen on the front lines of heroin abuse.
County Legislator Karla Boyce said she organized the event to bring more awareness to the dangers of substance abuse. The group on hand for Thursday night's meeting included moms who have kids dealing with addiction or in recovery, looking for support.
William Cleeton-Gandino shared his story of addiction, which he said started at the early age of 11. Now, at 19, he said he is drug free, and offered insight into the county wide problem.
"If we don't have the community support , then people won't be able to achieve recovery and families won't know there's hope and there's a chance to get through it," said Cleeton-Gandino.
"My mission and goal right now is to get the education out there in the community. That's one thing I know we can promise that we can do in partnership with Monroe County Sheriff Department as well as people who have suffered through this," said Boyce.
"If they're willing to share their stories and people are willing to listen I'm sure we can make a difference in our community," said Boyce.
People were also given information about local support groups, including the Family Recovery Network.

The Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is a tragic and difficult experience for families
It involves not only the death of the baby but also the loss of a future as a parent
The subsequent grief is multifaceted and each family member has different needs and resources
we identified 24 studies between 1982 and 2021: they dealt with individual
family and couple experience when a SIDS occurs; in addition
some studies compared perinatal loss and neonatal loss with SIDS loss
Our results point out the need for an intervention that focuses on the needs of each family member and tailored around the specifics of SIDS loss rather than general grief
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is “the sudden unexpected death of an apparently healthy infant less than one year of age that remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation, including performance of a full autopsy with ancillary testing, investigation of the site of death, and review of the clinical history” (Goldstein et al., 2019a
we hypothesize that SIDS may have psychological effects not only on the mother
This systematic review arose from the need to provide a qualitative synthesis of the psychological impact of SIDS not only at the personal level
and extended family experience is useful in providing forms of support or possibly interventions that address the needs and priorities of these individuals
The grief that follows the loss of a child to SIDS crashes into the lives of affected families like a bolt from the blue
and although there is a strong commitment to prevention campaigns worldwide
the etiology of sudden infant death syndrome is not yet clear
until medical science provides the answers we all expect
it is of great interest to explore not only the risk factors for SIDS
but also to be prepared for what this event means at the couple and family level
This review should serve as a starting point for timely and up-to-date training of health professionals who should utilize the figure of the psychologist as the primary coordinator for family bereavement care
The research questions that this systematic review aims to answer are: What are the consequences of SIDS at the personal and family level
What is the grieving process of the mother
The aim of this review is therefore to develop a better understanding of the difficulties faced by bereaved families after a fatality attributed to SIDS
The following systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines for searching, systematizing, and reporting systematic reviews (Moher et al., 2009; Page et al., 2021)
The search was conducted from July 2021 to December 2021 and has no specific time interval
It was decided not to limit the search to a short time frame in order to include as many studies as possible
Each article was independently reviewed for eligibility by two individuals
Studies were identified by querying online databases (ProQuest Psychology Journal
focusing on the psychological impact of SIDS at the family
The combination of keywords in this first step was: (1) sudden infant death syndrome OR sids OR sudi OR suid OR sudden unexplained death in infants
AND (3) parent’ OR mother’ OR father’ OR sibling’
this number was further reduced to 61 after eliminating 15 duplicates
the 61 selected studies were analyzed by title and abstract
17 articles were removed because they (1) addressed causes
and SIDS prevention; were more concerned with religion than with the consequences of SIDS for family members; addressed specific conditions (abuse
addressed medical research or book reviews
Studies that addressed the search for medical causes of SIDS or risk and prevention factors were excluded because
although they were of great scientific relevance
they were not consistent with the objectives of the present study
The systematic analysis of the literature was carried out considering the objectives, the inclusion and exclusion method used and the results. The selection process is shown in Figure 1, while detailed information on each article can be found in Table 1
Summary table—studies about the psychological impact of SIDS on the family system
The selected studies were conducted in different parts of the world: United States (n = 11)
with: a greater frequency in the 1990s (n = 13)
followed by the period from 2010 to 2020 (n = 4)
Sixteen studies used quantitative techniques
Parents also seek to authentically share detailed information about the diagnosis, which facilitates a comprehensive explanation of the death by professionals (Garstang et al., 2016)
the review provided satisfactory results at the substantive level
indicating that the topic deserves clinical attention and inspiration for further research
not only in the medical field but also in the psychological field
This literature review identified 24 studies on the psychological impact of SIDS on the family system
This literature review highlighted the basic characteristics of SIDS: first
the differences between SIDS and perinatal and neonatal loss
The authors strongly emphasized the risk posed by the simultaneous presence of multiple factors: more than two factors significantly predicted risk in the year after death
while four factors significantly predicted risk 2 years after the child’s death
only one study emerged that focused exclusively on the father figure; however
it cannot be considered representative of the population
Based on the findings, it could be noted that there is little literature on the figure of the father at the international level; moreover, in research on the grief experience of family members after a childhood loss, the mother’s experience has been much studied, to the detriment of the fathers’ experience (Morris et al., 2019)
further thematic knowledge is needed to better understand the experience of grieving fathers so that the life of the family as a whole is not lost after a loss
SIDS results in a sudden change in the roles and responsibilities of both partners, which differ in terms of gender-specific grieving processes (Plews-Ogan et al., 2021): men’s problem-solving ability is more action-oriented than women’s (Williams and Nikolaisen, 1982)
However, it is important to consider these data for intervention purposes, especially after the worsening of some risk factors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in women for anxiety disorders and major depression (COVID-19 Mental Disorders Collaborators, 2021)
The authors also pointed to a possible positive effect of pregnancies after the loss and a correlation between the length of the child’s life and the parents’ adjustment, but, in contrast to Price et al. (1985), found that a longer time spent with the child negatively affected the parents’ grief response (Dyregrov and Matthiesen, 1987)
this analysis shows that SIDS is a tragic event that has psychological consequences at the individual
the unexplained and sudden loss of a child in the first year of life can have profound effects on the entire family system: Indeed
each member of the family unit may suffer from the loss at both the individual and relational levels
it would be important that new studies also be conducted on the experiences of all family members who have suffered the loss
This article aims to highlight the international literature on the psychological consequences of the sudden and unexpected death of a child
It was decided to approach this topic with a broader focus of attention
in order to capture the impact that these tragic losses have outside the parent couple
it was possible to observe that not only the parents suffer this loss
but also the other family figures around them
such as the grandparents and the siblings already present
Compared to the considerable amount of data on mothers’ experiences
there is no corresponding number of studies on fathers
there is only one study focusing on male partners in the Māori population
which is also difficult to generalize due to the strong cultural and social component; other works include the father figure in studies of couples
We can say that further studies focusing exclusively on the paternal experience are needed to better legitimize the pain resulting from this loss and to provide the basis for support tailored to men’s specific needs
surveys of siblings are not based on a direct examination of their behavior
it is important to conduct ad hoc studies that examine the real-life experiences of siblings at specific ages and to develop guidelines to assist parents in communicating about death and grief with siblings
grandparenting and comparative studies of stillbirth
Findings about grandparenting experiences and hypotheses about differences in grief between stillbirth
and SIDS are based on old studies; therefore
we believe there will be an opportunity to review and update these data in light of new studies
No medical databases were considered in the review of the literature; instead
it was decided to examine only the psychological databases
it is advisable to deepen the investigation and consider databases from other disciplines
The studies included in this review point to the need for an intervention that targets the needs of each family member and is tailored to the specifics of SIDS loss
The role of the psychologist must become more important and central in the moments following the loss to make the best use of available resources and reduce risk factors as much as possible
Until medical science finds the causes of this syndrome
clinical psychology must strive to develop programs that address the experiences of these families with continuity and competence
offering them a pair of lenses better suited to see the eclipse that has obscured their existence and preparing them to reinvest in desire and life

Seven Catholic sisters were released Jan
Vincent de Paul and a member of the Ursulines of Gandino had been arrested in Addis Ababa by the Ethiopian police

Other local sources confirmed to the news agency that the sisters were in good health
Still being held are two deacons and two nuns from Kobo

In a follow-up article
Agenzia Fides quoted Mother Raffaella Pedrini
superior general of the Ursuline Sisters of Gandino
as saying she had spoken to Teserma "directly and found her to be very calm and generally in good shape
She still does not know the reasons why she was arrested
there will be time to understand what happened and why our sister was imprisoned."
"I can say with certainty that she is well and in good general condition
It follows that the sister and the people who shared her captivity were treated well," Agenzia Fides reported
"Sister Abrehet was imprisoned first in a courtyard of a police building and then she was transferred to a large room where she lived with a hundred people
The superior of Gandino said she wants a fuller explanation for the detention of the member of the congregation
"After moments of anguish and so much suffering
we were finally able to thank the Lord for the liberation of our sister and of the other nuns," Pedrini said
"In the conversations that I had with our community in Ethiopia

Patty Hayden adds bows to the Berry Indulgence package
which contains chocolate-covered strawberries
the receiving area of the Syracuse University Bookstore in the lower level of the Schine Student Center was bustling
Other shelves held large bags called the Valentine’s Snack Attack—filled with cookies
and balloons were bunched together in cheerful bouquets
The Bookstore’s Hugs from Home program offers parents and families the opportunity to order sweet and thoughtful treats for their students for Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is by far the busiest delivery day
who leads the staff in preparing for the big day
this space was the staging area from which Bookstore employees prepped for the delivery of more than 400 gifts to students in residence halls
academic buildings and Greek houses across campus
Parents selecting gifts had 15 packages from which to choose
including various combinations of snacks; fruit; balloons; cookie cakes
cupcakes and cookies from the Food Services Bake Shop; Chocolate Pizza Company pizza and wings; collegiate items; flowers; candy; chocolate-covered strawberries and plush bears
Steve Richardson checks orders that are prepared to be delivered to the residence halls
The Bookstore has run the Hugs from Home Program for more than 30 years
and administrative assistant Linda Owens has coordinated the program and deliveries for the past 18
have been assembling the gifts together for years
they work so closely that they are affectionately nicknamed “the twins” by their coworkers
The Valentine’s Day initiative begins months in advance
as Hayden begins ordering non-perishable items
Gifts containing perishable items—such as flowers and baked goods—are assembled in the immediate days leading up to Valentine’s Day
Maitland was busy cross-referencing handwritten cards with master lists
Hayden crowned the Berry Indulgence packages—chocolate-covered strawberries—with red bows while Owens worked on assembling balloon bouquets—making sure that each was just right
The two moved from task to task with the ease of a well-oiled machine
evidence of their years of experience in making this day go off without a hitch
Bookstore employees Steve Richardson and Yuqing Sun worked on attaching cards to gifts
they were packed into boxes organized by residence halls and placed on pallets
Driver Rob Hillers loaded the pallets onto a truck and delivered them to the front desks of each of the residence halls
“We are always happy when this day comes,” Maitland says
“There is always a lot of excitement around getting everything together and out to the students.”
The program is one of the ways the Bookstore supports students during their Syracuse experience
“Aside from being committed to providing students with the goods and services required for their academic success
we also like to feel it’s within our mission to provide products and services that connect the student
alum and family member to campus,” says SU Bookstore Director Roger Hailstork
“This is evidenced by campuswide events such as visitation days and homecomings
where the Bookstore doubles as a hub for connecting and reconnecting regardless of school or college affiliation.”
Owens and Hayden kept a watchful eye to make sure everything was running smoothly
particularly in the residence halls with lots of orders
The staff that work with Hugs and other “under the radar” Bookstore programs are incredible
“It is not an exaggeration to say they treat each order as if they made it for their loved ones
Staff comes in early and leaves late to ensure that all items are accounted for and all addresses are correct,” he says
“This is not a project that just started this week
They have spent the last month ordering product
double checking names and coordinating the delivery effort
Accuracy is a point of personal pride with my staff
as they know the loved ones who ordered these arrangements trust us to get it right.”

Gandino delivered gifts Thursday to several South Campus student residents
and they were from my mom and dad back home
It was very sweet to have them delivered to me
and it felt as if I weren’t so far from them right now,” Small said
“I was walking around with a smile on my face all day having felt loved this Valentine’s Day!”

The plan kicked in the minute Owen Kemp got out of jail
and execution was key to keeping the 19-year-old heroin addict clean
He would move in with his grandparents in Utica
who had purged their home of medication and any valuables he might be tempted to sell for dope
He would sleep in the converted attic that was his mother's childhood bedroom
His grandfather would teach him the roofing trade
Staying home in Irondequoit was out of the question for Owen
He had gotten sober in jail and wanted to avoid slipping into old habits with old friends
"He knew his best chance of staying clean was to make a fresh start," said his mother
So when Owen was released from Monroe County Jail in late October in the flip-flops
T-shirt and shorts he was wearing when he was picked up in June on a variety of charges related to his addiction — theft
trespassing among them — his family did as they had rehearsed
and his 7-year-old sister and 5-year-old brother picked him up at 6 a.m.
his stepmother and aunt at a local diner for breakfast
his grandparents whisked him away to Utica
But the plan came to a screeching halt two weeks later when
Owen's grandfather found him dead in his bed
The video game Owen had been playing was still on the television
Even with heroin-related deaths rising and conversation about the topic intensifying since the death of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman
few people can so intimately comprehend how the drug turns lives upside down as the families of addicts
They use terms like "living hell" to describe their homes
They shudder at the stigma they say is imposed on addicts and those close to them
"It's so incredibly isolating to not only have lost him
but to feel like I'm judged and blamed for his death and that he's judged," Frazier said
Owen's was one of 11 fatal heroin overdoses in Oneida County last year
according to the county's medical examiner
His death certificate listed "acute heroin toxicity" as the cause
whose son Trevor grew close with Owen in a rehabilitation residence for adolescents
recalled her astonishment when she attended her first group parent meeting and recognized people from her town of Pittsford
"It was both reassuring and terrifying," Meyer said
He recalled taking his first hit a half hour after leaving the hospital for overdosing on a combination of crack
and had already begun what would become a years-long cycle of couch surfing
and selling expensive electric toothbrushes he stole from drug stores to feed his habit
"I couldn't have him here," his mother said
"It was like sleeping with my purse every night
coming home at lunch to find out my house had been ransacked."
His parents took out a restraining order against him and compiled a list of Neil Young songs to play at his funeral
"I never thought he would live," Meyer said
Trevor ended up at Unity Chemical Dependency's Young Men's Community Residence in Greece in June 2012 after a stint in jail for violating the restraining order by forging checks from his parents' bank account and pawning his younger sister's laptop
Seven of his 11 months in the residence overlapped with Owen
whom Trevor recalled as a caring friend who was serious about getting sober
Trevor recalled feeling low on his birthday in the residence
and Owen presenting him with a hand-made card encouraging him to stay clean and a pair of white long underwear wrapped in newspaper
who today is 20-months clean and living in a halfway house
"A lot of people (there) weren't serious about getting sober
The seeds of Owen's habit were planted years earlier
He was a bright child with an artistic flair
Doctors diagnosed him with a variety of mental health disorders
where he saw a lot of darkness in the world," said Will Cleeton-Gandino
Owen first used marijuana with his Boy Scout troop as a pre-teen
Between brushes with the law during his teenage years
he spent time in five different residential drug treatment programs
The last was the Young Men's Community Residence
from which he was discharged for poor behavior
had him research the dangers of drug use and volunteer at a homeless shelter
When he started skipping school as a teenager
his parents had him put on court-ordered probation
They pressed charges when he stole from them
He had been in counseling since he was 9 years old
"We always wanted to make sure Owen saw the consequences
thinking that if they were painful enough he would make better choices," Frazier said
president of the board of the American Society of Addiction Medicine
said family participation in an addict's treatment plan is critical to success
addiction for some is difficult to overcome even with the best supports
has a range of potential severity," Gitlow said
"You could have a mild addict or you could have a severe addict
There are some people who do well the first time they go through treatment
then there are others whose disease progresses and progresses and progresses and they eventually die."
Like many parents of addicts who are involved in their child's recovery
Frazier found a second family in others who relate to living with the mayhem
recalled hosting a pre-race party for her eldest son's cross-country team at a time when Will's abuse was rampant and word that he had recently been arrested had gotten around
and I recall that evening several mothers who came to the door
and told me their children would not be coming," Cleeton said
"I had a sense that it was just too scary for them to think that their children would be in the home of a family where a child had been using drugs."
Cleeton recalled asking her mother to call her church's prayer line on behalf of Will
"People who are family are so terrified by this disease that they are reluctant to talk about it," said Cleeton
He attends Monroe Community College and is active in supporting other recovering addicts
Frazier has seized on her son's passing as an opportunity to educate others about addiction
his family made available pamphlets on addiction services and invited friends he met in rehab to eulogize him and recount their own struggles
"We didn't want his life to be defined by addiction
but his death certainly was," Frazier said
Owen knew no one in Utica aside from his grandparents
but he connected with a dealer online and arranged for the dope that would kill him to be dropped off at their house the night before he died
His mother figures he eluded detection by telling his grandparents he was stepping outside for a cigarette
He was lying on his side on the bed in the room his mother shared with her sister when they were children
"There was nothing good about his death except that when he died he was safe and warm and loved," said his aunt
Frazier summoned the strength to visit her old bedroom
She recalled finding solace in that the room was full of love
and how Owen could easily have died in a gas station bathroom
She sometimes has to remind herself that her oldest boy is dead
Sometimes she is reminded when she tucks her young daughter and son in at night
'I'm the luckiest mommy in the world because I have three beautiful babies,'" Frazier said

yes—my friend has a point: To someone who has never given a moment’s thought to whether Jesus was a real person or not
he does seem like an entirely fictional character.”
The consensus is that Jesus was a real person
Maybe he was not the Son of God born of a virgin
a person who lived in the Middle East at some point in the early first century
Skeptics of this view are called Jesus mythicists
they have not only been outnumbered among scholars and historians but also widely ignored by the general public
In the eight decades Gallup has conducted this poll
2020 was the first year the number dipped below 50%
While Christians need Jesus to be historical
non-Christians do not have any particular reason to care either way
for people who have not had much exposure to Christian history
I have a friend who has never once gone to church and more or less lives her life entirely oblivious to the existence of any world religion
I told her recently that I am starting to come around to the idea that Jesus was entirely fictional
Jesus was born to a woman who had never had sex
he rose up into the sky and conveniently never came back down
his story (we often hear) parallels those of other mythical figures who offer salvation after dying and coming back
he does seem like an entirely fictional character
This point is important because more and more people are growing up like my friend
with next-to-no exposure to the Jesus story beyond the mythical bits
the mythicist view will be the default view
But let us forget about statistics and anecdotes
Do the mythicists actually have a valid argument that Jesus was fictional
Or are they just (as is often claimed) bitter atheists and conspiracy theorists who don’t understand the history
Here is Richard Carrier’s case for mythicism
as he presented it in three simple points on a recent episode of the MythVision Podcast:
the case against Jesus’s historicity seems eminently reasonable
And yet it has not been given a proper hearing by either religious scholars or the public
As mythicist author Earl Doherty shows in a survey, historians rely on the consensus view to brush aside the mythicist theory rather than to examine it. Carrier has also observed that most scholars who study Jesus are biased against the mythicist view because they are essentially trained to presuppose that Jesus existed as a real person. In a 2017 talk, Carrier explained
“Even secular experts in this field have been trained with a body of Christian faith assumptions that are this lens through which you look at this evidence and select which evidence to look at.” As a result
the consensus that Jesus was a real person is based on this framework of Christian faith assumptions
I think mythicists are shooting themselves in the foot because they convince those who want to be convinced
and the people they really ought to be trying to convince just laugh at them.” In other words
Ehrman thinks arguing for mythicism is the wrong tactic for deconverting Christians
Although I find Ehrman genuine in his views
it is possible that he is motivated against taking the mythicists seriously because he does not want to be laughed at by the very people he is trying to reach
deconverting Christians should be an entirely separate project
But let us assume the mythicists do not have a strong case against the historicity of Jesus
Even so—to return to my original point—it seems likely their numbers are on the verge of growing rapidly
Given the demographic shift away from Christianity
there are bound to be people (like my friend) who grow up simply assuming Jesus was a fictional character—regardless of whether the academic mythicists have a strong argument or not
a growing number of mythicists authors—such as Carrier
and Price—are writing books and regularly appearing on podcasts and YouTube channels
regardless of whether or not their arguments are any good
they sound good to anyone who cares to listen
When Carrier recently debated Dennis R. MacDonald on the question of mythicism
no one in the comments section was laughing at Carrier (as Ehrman might have worried)
I am seeing highly engaged comments that lean skeptically against historicity
MacDonald concedes that our earliest extant Gospel (gMark) is so heavily mythologized that it’s completely lacking of veracious historical information concerning Jesus
he pins his entire historicist argument on a hypothetical and contested source text (Q) to establish the historical basis for Jesus
None of this is to say that Jesus definitely did not exist as a real person
Carrier puts the odds at a one in three chance that he existed
As someone who knows less about the topic than these experts
I am happy to grant historical Jesus even better odds
I do not see any way for historical Jesus to maintain such a strong advantage
it seems highly probably that the mythicist view will continue to become more well-subscribed to
and the new mainstream view—correct or otherwise—might become that Jesus is nothing more than a fictional character
