ITALY: Modernisation and extension of Roma’s Termini – Giardinetti light rail lineincluding rebuilding from narrow to standard gauge is set to begin next year
The first is the complete modernisation of the existing 9 km Termini – Giardinetti line
which will be rebuilt from 950 mm to 1 435 mm gauge
Revenue services are currently only running between Termini and the metro Line C interchange at Parco di Centocelle
The second is the construction of a 3·6 km extension from Giardinetti to Tor Vergata to serve universities and hospitals
The third element will be the procurement of 22 light rail vehicles
In the longer term a further 4 km extension from Tor Vergata to a future park-and-ride site is also proposed
