The Austrian jumping team claimed a brilliant victory on Italian soil with nothing but clear rounds
Chef d’Equipe Angelika May chose a strong quartet of riders with championship experience
who showed their abilities by finishing on a completely clean sheet of zero with double clears for all four riders
Switzerland lagged behind with a team total of 16 penalties and Germany wound up in third also on 16 but a slower time
The home nation of Italy were sixth on 28 faults
this was the second leg of the Longines EEF Series but the first qualifying competition for the Southern region which was once again hosted by this wonderful Italian venue of Gorla Minore
Spectators were bathed in spring sunshine as they watched a morning of great sport which saw some beautiful clear rounds but plenty of faults
particularly towards the end of the course which included a number of technical jumping efforts and combinations
This challenging 1m50 course was set by Andrea Colombo for this CSIO3* competition
This height of course is a new development for the EEF Series which was previously smaller in dimensions but was well received by competitors many of whom are aiming for the FEI European Championships later this year
The competition consists of two rounds jumped over identical courses by each team and on this occasion a jump-off was not needed to establish the winner
Austria was likely to be the team hard to beat
given the combined experience of their riders
The team included all three members of their Jumping team who competed at the Paris 2024 Olympics
Max Kuhner and Katharina Rhomberg were joined by Christoph Obernauer who competed on the Austrian team at the FEI World Championships in Herning (DEN) in 2022
Puck who is ranked at 49 in the Longines Rider rankings got his team off to a strong start with the 11-year-old Belgian bred gelding Equitron Ornaat V
a horse he has been contesting in Global Champions Tour classes recently
“It is a very great competition for the upcoming riders and also for our team
I think it has been good to jump at 1m50 for the other championships like the Europeans
to get used to jumping at this height.”
33-year-old Rhomberg followed suit with a clean sheet on the impressive grey Colestus Cambridge who she has produced since a young horse
The pair competed at their first Olympics together in Paris last year and at just 10 years old
this Westfalian gelding has an exciting future ahead of him
Fairly built but not so easy to ride so we all had to ride well and luckily we did.”
Obernauer was also well mounted on his faithful companion Kleons Renegade
with whom he contested the World Championships in Denmark and has ridden since the horse was four years old
“He is one of a kind for me- a super horse
These are top facilities here and my horses are jumping really good and from the first fence on I had a really good feeling today.”
51-year-old Kuhner kept a cool head to jump last and produce two copy book rounds on The Diamant de Semilly sired 10 year old EIC Daloubet
“I have known the course designer for many years
he also did the European Championships for Young Riders (Gorla Minore 2023) and I think he did a great job.”
Chef d’Equipe Angelika May commented on the ‘very elegant old Italian style’ of course in Gorla
“I think this is a very nice competition and a very nice Series and I’m very proud of my team.”
the Longines EEF Nations Cup Series is growing in popularity
with a number of top-ranking riders competing against leading Young Riders and lesser-known names from emerging nations in the sport
Ukraine and Bulgaria alongside the more established Jumping nations like Switzerland
The EEF Series prides itself on nurturing both emerging showjumping nations as well as young riders and horses
giving them an opportunity to compete for their nation and showcase their talent to selectors

the CSIO3* 1.45m Nations Cup in Gorla Minore
saw eleven teams line up for the challenge set by the Italian course builder Elio Travagliati. “Today was very interesting
because it was the first leg of the Series
and the riders are jumping maybe their first Nations Cup this season," he commented on Friday's competition in a press release from EEF
"The first part of the course was a little soft
a good approach for the riders and after number 5 it became more difficult
the horses jumped well and we had two teams for a jump-off which is a very good result."
After finishing the two rounds on four penalties
Switzerland and Germany were left to battle it out in a deciding jump-off. Jumping clear in 38.71, Switzerland's Barbara Schnieper (SUI) and Judy KM (Joly St
Hubert x Saphir von der Rossi) secured the win for her team that consisted of Gilles Müller and Giavanna CB (Ukato x Lux)
Eva Gautschi and Christiane K (Christian x Chambertin) and Dominik Führer aboard Ghost (Lord Z x Cantos).
“We had a very interesting team with two riders making their debut
Gilles Müller and Eva Gautschi," Swiss Chef d’Equipe Peter van der Waaij said in a press release from EEF
Gilles with a double clear and Eva also with a clear so we’re very happy with that
but we always go for a victory and we had a very good team
good horses who jumped a lot of clears so we knew we had a good chance for the podium
but to win is always special. This Series is very important for us
It gives us an opportunity to bring up new pairs
I think Nations Cups in general are very important for the sport
but also at this level it is very good to build people and horses up.”
Germany's Patrick Stühlmeyer and Drako de Maugre (Kannan x Fusain du Defey) clocked a faster time in the jump-off than Schnieper
but a pole on the floor left Chef d'Equipe Marcus Döring's German team – also consisting of Pia Reich and PB Loewenherz (Levisto x Contender)
Philip Rüping and Chatolinue PS (Diablo Blanco x Stakkato) and Marie Ligges aboard Ballerina NRW (Balous Diamond x Cachas) – to second.
The United Arab Emirates completed the podium in third

As far as winning the Nations Cup was concerned
the decisive rounds proved to be the double clear rounds ridden by 19-year-old Oliver Fletcher
25-year-old Amy Inglis and 21-year-old Joe Fernyhough who did his first Nations Cup as a senior rider
The three youngsters led by Chef d’equipe Tony Newbery did not allow themselves to be intimidated by the competition
their opponents or the pressure and produced a fantastic team result
second and third place went to France and Switzerland
Belgium and Greece ranked according to total time
British Chef d’Equipe Tony Newbery said: “I think this EEF Series is a fantastic idea to bring the youth up
to get them ready hopefully for the Division 1
I think the height of the courses is perfect and a very good level to set
We have another team competing this week and it’s a great series to give the younger riders experience
These riders were with me in the Youth Series as Young Riders and Juniors
“I think it was a quite a difficult and technical course
but there was pressure on the nerves because of riding for one’s country and team also playing a massive part in it
Today luckily we all did well and it paid off
My first two Nations Cups were terrible which makes today even better!” Oliver Fletcher said.
“It all absolutely suited our horses today and I thought it was a nice course although the second round was tough in the heat and none of us are used to seeing the sunshine! It was tough to come out and do it again in the heat
It’s definitely a perfect step for riders like us who want to go up to the next level,” Amy Inglis added.
The CSIO3* in Gorla Minore marked the end of the regional qualifiers of the Longines EEF Series
with Italy and Greece securing their places for the decisive semi-final rounds ahead of the Warsaw final on September 8-11
The semi-final in Deauville will be held next weekend (June 23-26) with Belgium
The second semi-final will be held in Budapest (June 30 – July 3) with Austria

Italy’s young equestrian talents just couldn’t stop winning in Gorla Minore last weekend with victories across the age groups
They stood on top of the podium in the FEI Jumping Nations Cup Youth in the Young Riders’
The Young Riders dominated their event as they finished with just four overall penalties, well clear of Poland, Switzerland and Germany. Elena Datti on Nebbia Delle Schiave scored a double clear, with Giacomo Casadei, Martina Simoni and Lorenzo Correddu also impressing
The Italian Junior team finished clear in their six-team competition
while the Children came out on top after a thrilling battle with Germany at Gorla Minore’s Equieffe Equestrian Center
There were also a number of individual successes for the Italians, including for Correddu in the Grand Prix. The young rider, who turned 19 earlier this month, is a former European youth champion who showed in his first Young Riders Nations Cup that he is ready to keep on ascending with his stunning bay stallion, Ultos
We caught up with Lorenzo to find out more about his FEI Jumping Nations Cup Youth victory and his future plans…

Lorenzo didn’t have far to travel for the event in Gorla Minore
All the family puts in a little time to make our stable function as well as possible
Lorenzo is no stranger to the top of the podium after a successful youth career
“I would say that my major successes in my career so far are
first of all the third place in the Children’s Nations Cup at the European Championship in Millstreet in 2016
the Individual Children’s gold medal at the European Championships in Samorin in 2017
the gold medal in the Juniors Italian championship last year in Arezzo.”
but fit in perfectly alongside his three teammates
They enjoyed their success together at the start of what they hope will be a good season
“The Chef d’Equipe chose the first team so we were a strong team
we celebrated our victory with all the staff by having appetizer all together
“The main targets for me for the coming year are to participate at the European Championships in Oliva as well as to have good results at the Italian championship in Arezzo.”

nine-year-old Italian Sports Horse Ultos is originally from Sardinia
He has thrived since Lorenzo’s family bought him as a seven-year-old
although it wasn’t obvious he was going to be a star
I was not convinced of the potential of this horse
When we bought him he had done very few competitions and had almost no experience
but my father believed a lot in the capabilities of this horse
so we worked a lot on him and figured out he was a horse with a lot of qualities and potential
“Ultos is very clever and when he enters the arena I feel like he always wants to give his best
I always try to give him my best attention and I’m very honoured to ride this special horse that we “made” with my family.”

Nicolette Hirt is serious about Major League Show Jumping
The 21-year-old has jumped at nearly every MLSJ tour stop in 2021
A deep string of show jumping talent has allowed her to utilize a strong rotation
and she has brought forward both Fleurette and Chatou 7 in MLSJ team competition for the Blazing 7s
Cara Raether Carey and fellow U25 rider Chandler Meadows
Hirt jumped a top 10 finish in the CSI5* MLSJ Grand Prix with the 12-year-old Oldenburg gelding Chatou
whom Hirt has developed over the last two years
It was the first five-star Grand Prix for both horse and rider
“I always have so much fun in the ring with [Chatou] and am so proud of how much he’s grown,” Hirt said
The Selle Francais mare Fleurette has also been a reliable campaigner since joining Hirt’s string in April
The 12-year-old bay formerly jumped to the top of the 2019 Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Washington with two-time Olympic gold medalist Laura Kraut
started far from the rated show circuit—at least
Her first riding endeavors were in western pleasure with Arabians
she joined Hilary Johnson for the hunter-jumper circuit in Northern California before transitioning to the jumper ring at 14
Hirt has trained with the likes of Will Simpson
as well as Dietmar Gugler and Elisabeth Meyer
whom she joined in Germany to further her career in 2016
She now runs her program out of both Pleasanton
at her family’s Iron Horse Equestrian Center
she has also taken an interest in sales and developing young horses
Larissa and 7-year-old stallion Con Baloubet PS have put in strong performances in the CSI2* divisions offered on the MLSJ tour and are ones to watch for the future
This committed young professional has made the most of her international team debut at MLSJ

“I have always looked up to my parents and both my mum and dad have been of great help
so I hope I have made them proud with some of the recent successes,” Ireland’s 21-year-old Seamus Hughes Kennedy tells World of Showjumping
Seamus recently made history at the 2023 FEI Jumping European Championships for young riders
when winning the individual gold for young riders; Ireland’s first ever of its kind in that age category
Riding the only 8-year-old ESI Rocky (Stakkato Gold x Londonderry)
alongside Niamh McEvoy and Templepatrick Welcome Limmerick (Limmerick x Lux Z)
Ciaran Nallon and Fifty Shades Of Grey (Cellestial x Carolus I), Max Wachman and Quintini (Quintender 2 x Cassini II) as well as Rhys Williams aboard Playboy JT Z (Presley Boy x Plot Blue)
“I knew we had a really good team going,” Seamus says about his expectations ahead of the long week in the Italian heat
“Everyone on the team is very professional and they had done super all year. Ger O’Neill gave me huge support
having three world championship gold medals himself; he knows what it takes. I knew my horse had all the jump to stay clear if I could just guide him around and make sure he felt confident
Once I give him the right confidence to keep going
and it was definitely tough in the hot weather
“My horse ESI Rocky is still green – he is only eight – and did his first ranking class four weeks prior in Mullingar,” Seamus tells
“He jumped great there; jumped clear in the ranking class
and ended up third in the 2* Grand Prix which led us to having the right feeling to bring him to Gorla – and I am glad we did
I am very excited about Rocky; I think he can do anything
I hope to get him into a few five-star Nations Cup teams – I think he has all the potential.”
Seamus – who has competed in youth championships on many previous occasions – believes that these types of competitions are very important
I have always had something to work towards,” he explains
“And when you have the whole country behind you as well
they are always long weeks and it takes a lot of work to get there
I am lucky to have had a good team to go with
My mum was a big help in getting my horse up and going.”
While the European Championships in Gorla was on the forefront of Seamus’ goals for the 2023-season
the horse he opted jumping there – ESI Rocky – was originally only his third choice
“My first plan was my mare Cuffesgrange Cavadora (Z Wellie 72 x Luidam) that won a few Grand Prix classes at the start of the year
but then she did not feel fit enough to go and compete in the hot weather
It is a long week to jump a championship over five rounds
especially in the extreme weather we knew to expect
being double clear in all ranking classes he jumped and winning three of them
we sold him just four weeks before the Europeans to Evergate Stables
so then I had to put all my time and energy into getting Rocky to the right shape
Gorla Minore was not the first time Seamus won a major championship
he piloted Cuffesgrange Cavadora to a gold medal at the FEI WBFSH Jumping World Breeding Championship for Young Horses.
Cuffesgrange Cavadora has gone on to win international Grand Prix classes
but their story together started already when Seamus was riding ponies: He turned Cavadora’s mother from a barely ridden nine-year-old broodmare to one of the best ponies Europe has ever seen
“We bought Cavadora’s dam – Cuffesgrange Cavalidam
and I ended up going to the Europeans with her and we won the gold medal with the team
She also won the first ever pony World Cup before we sold her to Coolmore
She was already nine when we first bought her and had barely been ridden
I rode her all the way up the ranks to then be jumping the Europeans with her 2,5 years after we got her
I think she was one of the best ponies that Europe has ever seen; she was able to jump any two-star Grand Prix
we went back to her breeder and asked if she had given any foals; and Cavadora was there, in a field as a three-year-old
We bought her for little money and produced her all the way
with ponies and horses from our neighbours which we have then produced ourselves
with ponies and horses from our neighbours which we have then produced ourselves – and just kept the ball rolling,” Seamus continues
“Rocky’s breeder is my uncle Andrew Hughes
and we bought both ESI Rocky and ESI Ali from him as two- and three-year-olds and then produced them ourselves
Andrew’s mother Mary passed away a few months before Rocky and Ali got their first big wins
and I just hope that she has looked down on us and been proud
The whole family really follows us; I know Andrew’s father is glued to the TV
who many regard as one of the best horsemen in Ireland
I hope he would have been proud of me and the horses that go back to his breeding winning medals now.”
the Hughes Kennedy-family has a well-known name as one of the Irish showjumping dynasties
Seamus runs a yard together with his mother Claire – only a few kilometres down the road from his aunt Marion who runs the renowned HHS breeding farm
“My cousin Hugh is a big hand as well,” he tells
“He has been with me to all the shows this year
We have plenty of young horses coming through every year
We have only kind of started just after my pony years
My mum has always been into horses and loved horses all her life
She used to trade a lot when she was younger
who sadly passed away when she was in her early twenties
she ended up going to college and leaving the horses for a bit
It was only when I started riding that she got really back into it.”
three members of the junior team were my second-cousins – all the Brennans from Kilkenny – so everyone is kind of very much into horses,” he continues
“I got into it slowly though; I didn’t really like riding until I was around 12 and started to do hunting
Jumping jumps in the fields is what got me hooked in the first place
My mum is so passionate about the breeding and the young horses
but once I had done my final exams two years ago
I was still on the fence on whether to go to college or not
at the time I already had very good horses and I felt that if I did not put the work into them
That’s why I decided to go at it full time
put in the work and now it seems to start paying off
Hopefully we can keep going and can eventually start winning senior medals in the years to come.”
It is mainly just myself and my mum that run it day-by-day
years down the line we start to have their offspring up on Grand Prix level,” he says
to have our own horses at the higher level
We can produce them ourselves; we have good facilities and a good team
Gerard O’Neill from Castlefield is always there to support as well; advice on how to run the yard
it is mainly just myself and my mum that run it day-by-day
four and five-year-olds – we are getting bigger every year
We have a few really nice young horses who I think have a lot of potential coming up
and we look forward to competing with them in the future.”
While it was Seamus’ mother Claire that first taught him how to ride
the 21-year-old has never really had a full-time trainer
who he says has made an immense impact on him
“Jos Kumps used to be Nelson Pessoa’s right-hand man and as my granddad used to sell horses to Nelson
my auntie Marion got to know Jos through him
He has given me a lot of help on my flat work this year
and he has taught me how to work my horses
how to be in tune with them and how to become a better horseman
It was only at the end of last year that I met him and I don’t think I would have had the year that I did without him
I have to be very strict on myself not to fall into bad habits
Ger O’Neill lives a few minutes up the road
and I go to him regularly, he is fantastically focused and disciplined with laser focus on goals to work towards.”
Following his success at the Europeans in Gorla Minore, Seamus got to jump the five-star classes at Dublin Horse Show – making his first appearance at that level
“It was an exciting opportunity,” he says
“The atmosphere in Dublin is always special
I have been there every year for nearly my whole life
both to watch and to compete with ponies and in a few young horse classes
I feel really lucky to have had the chance to compete with all the big lads this time around
I have been spending my time on building up my team of horses and it has only been this year that I have had four horses at ranking level – moving up
especially for young riders. Thankfully
I got this opportunity now to ride in Dublin.”
Seamus’ goals evolve around producing his horses at home in Ireland and moving up the rankings
“I really enjoy Ireland and it is a great place to bring up your young horses,” he tells
we have also seen an improvement in the bigger classes
there aren’t a whole lot of international classes here
but once they get older and you want to start moving up the rankings and compete against the best riders
I might have to base myself in Europe for longer stints with a couple of horses to try and move up the world ranking
and to eventually start getting into the Nations Cup teams
One of my big goals would be to one day jump the Aga Khan at Dublin Horse Show – the five-star Nations Cup there
It is every Irish man’s dream to jump clear there
It is something I have watched every year since I was five and was able to understand horses
I just want to move up to senior level and be competitive there.”
but making progress is the best feeling there is,” Seamus concludes
is the feeling of a horse starting to come together
Like with Rocky – who is a very hot horse – it took us a long time to get him to do what he did in Gorla Minore
I love when a plan comes together; there is nothing quite like it."

FEI cancelled international events in ten countries on the European mainland with immediate effect and until 28 March 2021 due to the rapid evolution of a very aggressive strain of the neurological form of Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1)
which originated in Valencia (ESP) and that already has resulted in related outbreaks in at least three other countries in Europe
with stringent biosecurity protocols in place and additional FEI Veterinary Delegates on-site
the jumping tour venues in Vejer de la Frontera (ESP)
San Giovanni in Marignano (ITA) and Gorla Minore (ITA) were permitted to continue.
the Sunshine Tour in Vejer de la Frontera tonight announced that it will cancel the last three weeks of competitions after a horse has been seen to be showing neurological symptoms similar to EHV-1
despite the horse giving a negative test result for the virus. The horse is in isolation more than 2km away from the main competition site and has been so since the 26th of February
A statement from the organisers reads as follows:
"The Sunshine Tour wishes to inform everyone that the 27th edition of the Tour will end this Sunday 7th March
This decision has been made as one horse has been seen to be showing neurological symptoms similar to EHV-1
despite the horse giving a negative result for the virus. This horse is actually in isolation more than 2km away from the main competition site and has been so since the 26th of February
The horse arrived at Dehesa Montenmedio directly from its home stables in Belgium and was fit and healthy with no symptoms. The horse participated in the competition for the first two weeks as normal and on the first day of competition in the third week
On Friday the 26th of February the personal vet for this horse’s stables notified the organising committee that one of their horses had a fever. The horse was immediately isolated by the organising committee of theSunshine Tour
in stables that are more than 2km away from the actual showground. According to the regulations the FEI
(Federación Ecuestre Internacional) were duly notified about the case
At first the symptoms that the horse was expressing appeared to be those of piroplasmosis and the horse was given a blood test for both piroplasmosis and for rhinoneumonitis
Over subsequent days both the Competition vets and the FEI vets monitored the horse’s fever and condition twice a day. After a few days the fever had subsided
the horse presented for the first time neurological symptoms
the Organising Committee of the Sunshine Tour met with the FEI
the RFHE and the Ministry of Agriculture where it was decided to close the show down at the end of competition on Sunday the 7th of March
The above organisations have carried out a complete risk analysis and have come to an agreement between them that to guarantee an ordered departure of the horses
We need to work together to minimise the spread of this virus and we greatly appreciate the cooperation and understanding demonstrated by all the riders
sponsors and other team members involved."

This week the European Showjumping Championships for young riders
and Britain is fielding a team in each section
IRELAND's Young Riders (U21s) dominated a field of 16 nations to win the FEI European Show Jumping Championship at Gorla Minore
The Gain Equine Nutrition-sponsored Irish team of Rhys Williams
Max Wachman and Ciaran Nallon were imperious all week and
stamped their authority in the final round to win the competition for the first time since Millstreet in 2016
Ireland led going into yesterday’s final round on a score of 2.5
with Britain second on 10.41 and Belgium in third on 11.09
meaning Ireland had a dropped fence to spare over their nearest pursuer
with Tyrone’s McEvoy and Templepatrick Welcome Limmerick (ISH) leading the way with an awesome clear round on what was proving a difficult course in a time of 73.34 seconds
That settled team nerves and gave McEvoy an excellent chance of also securing an individual medal on Sunday
Overnight individual standings leader Williams was next up with Mullingar International Grand Prix winner Playboy JT Z and the Clare man was desperately unlucky in his round
finishing with just one pole down to finish with four faults in 74.91 seconds
That would prove to be Ireland’s discard score
as Hughes Kennedy and ESI Rocky (ISH) secured the victory with an ice-cool performance
leaving every pole standing in a time of 76.10 seconds
Wachman and Quintini were the very last combination to enter the arena and even with victory secure for his team
the 2022 Aga Khan winners jumped impeccably
finishing clear in 75.89 seconds to put the final touches on the ruthless victory
with Belgian way back on 15.09 and third-placed Britain on 18.41
who had preached focus and caution throughout the week at the Italian venue
saying: “I’m absolutely thrilled – it was the only colour medal I wanted this week and I knew this team had the talent to deliver it
“To win in that fashion is absolutely incredible
with that amount to spare over the Belgians and Great Britain
they’re a superb bunch and we’re over the moon
“I must give a huge thanks to all of the supporters and the team here on the ground
it is a massive undertaking to come out here and win a European Championship
Jason Foley and Ger O’Neill have been here all week with these teams
and they’ve had a huge influence on things – it’s very much a team effort
with excellent sponsors – Gain Equine Nutrition have been a huge supporter for a long time and I’m sure it’s great for them too
“This team isn’t finished yet too – we have Niamh and Seamus in the medals heading into Sunday’s individual final with Rhys and Max hot on their heels
plus the Juniors are in first place ahead of their final tomorrow so let’s hope for some more medals.”

it meant pressure was on with Wachman and Williams still to jump

which he duly did aboard Conthanja yet again

an RDS Championship is close to any Irish rider’s heart and
these championships see the top riders battle it out in a bid to take these coveted titles
The stands in Simmonscourt were packed to capacity for the first of the Young Rider Championships on Friday morning
Claiming the first title was Junior European Team gold medallist Coen Williams aboard Conthanja PS
Of the 16 combinations that booked their place in the final
seven proceeded to what was a very exciting jump-off
Co Clare’s Coen Williams had his first look at the course aboard Elsandro Du Bois
A strong gallop to the last saw him set the target of clear in 37.18
The target was reduced again as Marta Hughes-Bravo took every tight line with HHS Figero and shaved over two seconds off the target when clocking 35.15
Last to go aboard his European mount Conthanja PS
Coen Williams knew he only had one option if he wanted to retake the class from Marta
but it was the turn back to the last line that saw him clock the winning time of 34.71
while Williams and Elsandro Du Bois finished in third
The 1.25m-1.30m Championship on Saturday evening also went down to the wire
with three of the four combinations that booked their place in the jump-off delivering clears
Carlow’s Max Foley was first to go and he negotiated a series of good turns with Hermes De Cavalier and delivered the winning round of 32.99
Emily Moloney also answered all the questions with Ian Smyth’s Capitol Cruise and kept all the poles in place in a time of 34.36 to take the reserve title
The last of the double clears was delivered by Alice Wachman and Thijssen Sr Z in a time of 34.86 for third place
the last championship to be contested was the 1.10m/1.15m division
Claiming this title was Michael McGrath and Abbey Lagans
when she delivered the first double clear with Cassclo Beach
which would later prove good enough for third place
Michael McGrath had his foot firmly to the floor
A very tight turn back to the vertical at three and later a great turn back to the penultimate fence
saw him clock the winning round of clear in 32.10
Despite following the same path as the winner
a clear in 32.89 saw Ciara Fives and Mermus R Russel secure the reserve title
Coen Williams (Conthanja PS) and Marta Hughes-Bravo (HHS Figero)
were chosen to compete for the Young Rider Bursary
Taking the Bursary prize and the leading young rider title of the Dublin Horse Show was Ennis rider Coen Williams
These four riders were put through their paces by French Team Manager
Nooren praised the Irish for the amount of young talent that they have competing in Europe and the results are there to prove it
as they have dominated the international scene
the SJI Young Rider Championships moved to Hollypark
it was Robyn Moran who was crowned the National young rider champion
The Limerick rider was also crowned the leading 1.40m champion
Claiming the 1.30m title was Alexandra Hourigan
while Stephen Gibbons took the 1.20m title
with Daisy McNamara and Molly was also crowned the Children on Horses Champion
The 1.40m on the final day proved to be a very exciting class
Leading the victory lap was Rhys Williams with Dodarde E Z
Robyn Moran added to her points tally when she took the runner-up with Cushlas Fryday
Also adding points to her tally was Alexandra Hourigan and Cuffesgrange Caballus
while in fourth was European Team Champion
Coen Williams and CNF Dynamite also featured in the line-up
ahead of Annie Courtney-Cadam and LCC Bond
SEAMUS Hughes Kennedy added two gold medals to the cabinet of his Co Kilkenny home this week
The newly crowned Young Rider European Champion was previously fifth man for the pony gold medal-winning team in 2017
and he won the seven-year-old World Breeding Championships at Lanaken in 2019
“These are really the first two gold medals though because I was fifth man in the ponies and it was before they brought in the medal rule
and 2019 in Lanaken was the first year they didn’t give out medals,” Hughes Kennedy said on Tuesday after arriving home from Italy
His year got off to a fabulous start with two-star Grand Prix victories in Balmoral and at Sentower Park in Belgium aboard the now sold ESI Ali (ISH)
so he took the eight-year-old gelding ESI Rocky (Stakkato Gold x For Pleasure)
bred by his mother Clare’s first cousin Andrew Hughes at Ennisnag Stud
to these championships after a third place finish in the two-star Grand Prix of Mullingar
The pair started with a clear round in the opening speed class
placing 16th with a bit to do to get to the gold medal
He was in the medals going into the individual final and another clear saw him in the gold medal position before the very final round
ahead of compatriots Rhys Williams (Playboy JT Z) and Niamh McEvoy (Templepatrick Welcome Limmerick)
McEvoy finished with eight faults to drop to seventh
before Williams had the same score to finish sixth
Hughes Kennedy had one fence in hand over Sweden’s Beata Hermelin but he didn’t know that
and when a part of the combination hit the ground
it took him a second to realise he was the new champion
The Netherlands’ Skye Morssinkhof finished with the bronze medal
Hughes Kennedy said: “I did a comfortable round on the first day and stayed within two faults of the leaders
I knew with the Young Riders that it’s a lot more about endurance and keeping everything together for the week
so I knew I would be in touch as the week went on
“Then it was just about getting it done for Ireland to win the team gold
There was probably more pressure for the teams than individuals
and then there were the set of brothers – the Wachmans and Williams
“I actually didn’t know I could have one down
I thought I lost the gold but I knew that there was still at least a bronze for the taking once I just kept it together
It took me a second after when I looked up at the screen
and then I heard my dad [Melvyn] let out the roar and I knew!” he said
ESI Rocky has had a quick step up to international level this year
he was broken at our yard as a three-year-old and he is still a relatively green horse
“His first ranking class was only in Mullingar last month; his first 1.45m was the week before in Sentower and his first 1.40m this year was before that in Lummen
It has all come together rather quickly for him
we have had to manage his head and get him to work with us… we have big hopes for the horse going into the future.”
TOM Wachman didn’t touch a pole all week at the FEI Junior European Championships in Gorla Minore
with Cathalina S to finish with a team gold and individual silver on the final day of competition
the pair opened in 23rd place in the first speed round after a steady clear and had it all to do to get onto the podium
That opening round was won by his team mate
Another clear in the team final saw him enter the final individual round on Sunday in fifth place
Knowing that nothing other than two clear rounds were required to get into the medals
on the same score (1.82) he started with and one of just three riders to jump clear all week
Austria’s Anastasia Nielsen topped the podium with Tailormade Contou on a score of 0.70 and Holland’s Nick Nanning took the bronze with Bandia
Eoin Brennan placed sixth with two classy clears on the final day aboard Eskola M
but there was heartbreak for Coen Williams who
dropped two fences in the final round to lose the gold and finish in eighth place
Wachman said: “The team gold was brilliant
I was lucky enough to be on the team with very good riders and James Kernan did a great job
The big thing was to win the team gold and the individual then on Sunday was the icing on the cake
she didn’t touch a pole at all over the five rounds
The first day I was a little bit further back than I wanted to be
I was actually only 3.5 seconds off the winner but ended up in 23rd place
then fifth and was third going into jump the final round
he was leading it all week and he was very unlucky not to come home with a medal in the final round
coach] when I walked the track and I knew the horse was jumping well so I was fairly calm throughout the day and that stood to me.”
Wachman added: “She is obviously really careful but she is very hot at home
The blood that she has really stood to her at the end of the week
it was hot and the flies were quite bad too.”
Tom and his brother Max were one of two sets of brothers on the Irish teams
we were lucky to be out there together and both win team golds

An incredible weekend for Ireland at the FEI European Youth Show Jumping Championships in Gorla Minore
saw Kilkenny horses and riders play a leading role
with Ireland making history by winning two team golds
an individual gold and an individual silver medal
Leading the way was Seamus Hughes-Kennedy from Danesfort who was a key part of the five-member Irish U21 team that won the European team gold medal last Friday

which is managed by brothers Andrew and Niall Hughes.
It was a dominant performance from the Irish U21 team
managed by James Kernan who represented Ireland at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona
Ireland came into the final round in a strong position
holding almost two fences in hand on their nearest rivals
Three perfect clear rounds in the final decider saw Ireland take the gold medal in style
to finish on a final score of just 2.5 penalties – well clear of Belgium who took silver on 15.09 penalties while Great Britain took bronze on 18.41
The winning Irish team also included Tyrone’s Niamh McEvoy

Speaking after collecting his second European gold medal
Seamus Hughes Kennedy (21) said:"I'd like to thank everyone that has helped us
A special thanks to Ennisnag Stud run by our uncles just down the road
They bred the horse [ESI Rocky] and we bought him then as a young horse and have had him for the last six years - so it 's been good to have something to show for it
A double gold medal sounds good so I can't complain."
The U18 European team final also saw Ireland win the gold medal
with no less than three of the five Irish team members all coming from Co Kilkenny
The team included brothers Eoin and Timmy Brennan
sons of Tim and Olivia Brennan from Gowran
along with their cousin James Brennan who is also from Gowran and the son of Tom and Sinead Brennan
James Brennan was riding the Irish-bred horse MHS Im The One (ISH)
The two anchor riders Tom and Coen were out of this world the way they jumped
they took us out of a hole – its a great result for everyone
It’s great for James Kernan as he hadn’t won a gold medal before this week and now he has two team gold at the same championships
It’s been a great championships for Irish-bred horses
Seamus Hughes’ horse ESI Rocky (ISH) looks to be exceptional and so too is Niamh McEvoy’s Templepatrick Welcome Limmerick (ISH).”
The gold medal winning Irish U18 team also included Clare’s Coen Williams and Tipperary’s Tom Wachman
The Junior (18) European final was also saw Irish success
with Tipperary’s Tom Wachman and Cathalina S taking individual silver
Kilkenny’s Eoin Brennan finished in sixth place individually with Eskola M

daughter of Tom and Linda Moloney who are part of the team at Warrington Top Flight Equestrian Centre just outside Kilkenny City
Alice jumped three clear rounds to help the Irish team to an eighth place finish and she also qualified for the individual final
Director General of the Irish Horse Board said:
“This has been an amazing European Championships for Irish horses and riders and follows the incredible work done by breeders
coaches and parents which resulted in an amazing overall medal haul
It was a real success story for Kilkenny in particular
with so many of the medal-winning horses and riders coming from the county
Many congratulations to Seamus Hughes-Kennedy
his parents Clare Hughes and Melvyn Kennedy and to Ennisnag Stud
the breeders of ESI Rocky (ISH) on a fantastic performance to become double Young Rider European champions
Congratulations also to all of the Brennan families who played a key role in Ireland’s U18 gold medal win and also to Alice Moloney who did brilliantly on our U14 team.”
