The question of gender equality cuts across film industries
An Indian illustrator is celebrating strong female characters in Bollywood and Hollywood films through her ongoing series Queens OnScreen
in the hope that it will lead to greater diversity
Mumbai-based illustrator Shivani Gorle was inspired to start the series when she came across a Netflix category called "movies with a strong female lead" and wondered why there was a need for it in the first place
"Why can't there just be regular movies with both genders playing equally strong and well-rounded characters?" Gorle told Mashable
"I felt like there was a lot more room for gender equality in the film industry
Each circular illustration combines a portrait of Gorle's favourite female characters with a dialogue from the film
The 21-year-old chooses the featured characters from the movies she's seen
sometimes watching them again to look for a dialogue that conveyed the essence of the character and why she was powerful
"What's common to all the heroines is their thirst for life
their desire to break through conventions and ability to inspire," Gorle says
Queens OnScreen also makes a comment on gender equality and greater diversity in films
"The larger point of this project is to ensure that one day women don't need a separate category on Netflix or any other movie distribution medium to portray convincing characters," Gorls adds
"there'll just be regular movies with equally well-rounded and powerful characters represented by all genders."

Any time you're traveling, gathering and crowding into indoor spaces can bring heightened COVID-19 risks. (Anna Vignet/KQED)In 2020, a huge number of people chose to say no to gathering for the holidays because of the dangers posed by COVID-19 pre-vaccines
especially to older or immunocompromised family members
Now, in 2023, many folks feel safer gathering for the holidays again — especially if they’ve recently received the new COVID-19 vaccine
But the fact remains that whatever the reason for a get-together
you’re gathering several people — probably a lot of them — in the same room
the risk of COVID-19 transmission increases if someone in that room has the virus
One way to help reduce the risks of COVID-19 transmission in an indoor space is to ensure that an indoor space has clean air — because coronavirus particles can hang in the air of places that aren’t ventilated properly
what does “ventilating your space” really mean in practice for your own holiday dinner
Keep reading for practical tips about filtering and ventilating your home for your holiday dinner to reduce the risks of your loved ones catching not just COVID-19 but other respiratory viruses like flu and RSV
Clean air makes it harder for the coronavirus particles that cause COVID-19 to hang around and infect you — and it can be achieved by filtering those particles from the air with a filtration device or by ventilating the space with fresh air
ventilated air is also why being outdoors makes your risk of COVID transmission drop significantly.)
“If people could see COVID in the air
it would make a lot more sense that what you need to do is clean the air in your house,” Abraar Karan
an infectious disease physician at Stanford University
The basic idea: “Exchange the air out
improve ventilation so that you don’t have a lot of air hanging around where other people can breathe it in and get infected,” Karan said
Some ways to filter in the air inside your home:
If you have a filtration device in your home — perhaps an air purifier you purchased in the past to combat wildfire smoke — then that is probably the best way to improve air quality
associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at Stanford
Gorle said this comes with two caveats, though. First, “you need to make sure that you replace the filter frequently enough that the system can work optimally,” she said. The recommended time limit for filter use may depend on the specific appliance
but it’s probably time if you can’t remember when you last replaced it
Second, make sure that “the capacity is rated for the room [size] that you have,” Gorle said. That is, don’t rely on a tiny filtering device intended for a small space to clean the air inside a really big room — because it just won’t do the job. Read more from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) about effectively using an indoor air purifying unit.
Use your air conditioning (if you have it)
You may hear the filtration systems built into homes called HVAC systems
Bay Area homes typically don’t have air conditioning
those systems can have “really high-grade filters as well,” Gorle said — “HEPA filters that will filter out particles
just the way that you do it with any indoor air filtering system.”
If you’re conscious of your energy use (and your bills)
Gorle notes that your AC “will consume a bit more energy because at the same time they’re conditioning the air [to be] cooling it.”
If you have access to a box fan, a MERV filter and some duct tape, you can make your own DIY air filter device. Find our instructions — first published for wildfire smoke — in this KQED guide, “How to make your own air purifier.”
NPR also has another guide to making your own DIY air filter using a box fan, or you can consult this “How to DIY an Air Purifier” explainer from the New York Times Wirecutter blog
If you don’t have a filtration device or AC
you’re going to focus on “how you can maximize that airflow” through your space
But it’s not just a case of cracking a solitary window open
Gorle’s expert advice is as follows:
Try to open more than one window around a room
the more ventilation you are going to get,” Gorle said — because it’s not enough to bring fresh air into your space
you want to then help get that air out through another window — and “the more windows
Opening windows on the opposite sides of a room is particularly effective for creating cross-ventilation
opening two windows that are side-by-side will be less useful at this
What if you can’t — or don’t want to — open your windows all the way? In this instance, even just cracking windows a bit is still a good idea, Virginia Tech professor of civil and environmental engineering Linsey Marr told NPR. Your windows “don’t have to be wide open,” Marr said.
…but think carefully about where you seat your guests
Consider the airflow direction in and out of your space when you have two or more windows open
“Because if you’re sitting at the window where the air is coming in
you’re getting all that clean air,” Gorle said
“But you’re sitting at the window where the air is going out
you’re actually getting all the air that people have been breathing.”
Try to seat your guests as close as possible to the fresh air coming in — and don’t park them all by the window where airflow is going out
Because if COVID-19 particles are in that airflow
that “air out” area will be heavy
Run a test to see how air is coming in — or out
How do you know which is the “air in” window and which is the “air out” one
Gorle has a few tricks up her sleeve for this
The simplest is to stand in front of the open window and hold up a small piece of string
“you can kind of see which way the stream moves and then understand if the air is coming in or going out,” Gorle said
You could also use a candle for this — although
be careful with the lit flame (especially if you and your guests have already begun the holiday celebrations with a drink or two.)
Once you’ve established how air is coming in and out of your space through the windows
you know where best to seat your guests closest to that fresh incoming air and furthest from the outflow — especially those at higher risk for severe disease or hospitalization from COVID-19
“That’s what I’ve done with my mom
who was at risk as well,” Gorle said
Don’t panic if you only have one window to open
Gorle said — you’ll still “get some air exchanged depending on where the wind is coming from.” And some fresh air in your space is better than none
“you might have enough pressure differences between indoor and outdoor that you do actually get some ventilation with just one window open
she said — “so it is always better to open your window than to keep it closed.”
Use portable fans to help that existing airflow move
Once you’ve worked out how air is coming in and out of your open windows
you could try using portable fans — like a box fan — to help push the existing airflow along
You’ll be “using the fan to help the airflow in that same direction because you don’t want to start counteracting the natural driving force,” Gorle said
If you have a skylight with a manual or remote-controlled way of opening it
Opening an overhead window like a skylight will create airflow really easily
Gorle said — “because of temperature differences between indoors and outdoors
the air will move vertically as well.”
“you can actually use buoyancy effects to try and create that airflow through openings that are at different heights,” she said
This tip is particularly good for smaller homes
you can open them: Keep all the doors in your home open
and run any bathroom fan that’s extracting air
“That is going to help bring air in through any windows that you can open as well,” and then push the air out
If your family or friends complain about the cold indoors from all your open windows
rest assured that it’s okay to turn on your space heater — you won’t be undoing all your good ventilation work
“It might be that you’re actually increasing the airflow if you heat up the indoors a little bit better,” Gorle said
“Bigger temperature differences usually cause more airflow” — unless you’ve got unlucky
the upward force) and the wind are fighting each other
it’s worth turning on a heater just to be able to keep those windows open

14 men from South Africa received the Victoria Cross
As part of the Centenary Commemorations the people of the United Kingdom marked their gratitude to those courageous men by presenting a bronze memorial plaque to their home country engraved with their names
The plaque is now displayed at the Castle of Good Hope
Before the war he was working as a farmer in South Africa
He was 22 years old and a temporary Lieutenant with the Royal Field Artillery in the British Army when he was awarded his Victoria Cross on 1 October 1918
initiative and devotion to duty during the attack on Ledeghem on 1st October
gun working in close conjunction with infantry
He brought his gun into action in the most exposed positions on four separate occasions
and disposed of enemy machine guns by firing over open sights under direct machine-gun fire at 500 to 600 yards’ range
seeing that the infantry were being driven back by intense hostile fire
galloped his gun in front of the leading infantry
and on 2 occasions knocked out enemy machine guns which were causing the trouble
His disregard of personal safety and dash were a magnificent example to the wavering line
which rallied and re-took the northern end of the village
After the war Gorle returned to South Africa

“We farmers have been cheated of our lands
People thought that they were giving land to the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC),” says Kashinath Gorle
Kashnath Gorle has been protesting against the refinery to be set up at Barsu
a village in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra
is filled with lush green fields and hills
and the prime occupation of people in the region is agriculture
the farmers of Barsu have turned the village into a pitch battleground against the refinery project
Gorle is also an active member of the Barsu Solgaon Panchkroshi Refinery Virodhi Sanghatana (BSPRVS)
This organisation has been at the forefront of the protest against the refinery project
known as the Ratnagiri Refinery and Petrochemical Ltd (RRPCL)
is a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and other partners such as the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL)
and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL)
Its objective is to establish the world’s largest petrochemical refinery and petroleum products hub
The project would require 6000 acres of land
affecting six villages and around 15,000 people
the Maharashtra government sees the project as a source of employment

The Ratnagiri Refinery and Petrochemical Ltd (RRPCL) was established in 2017
raising local concerns about the potential environmental
and economic impacts of such a massive industrial undertaking
The refinery project has led to the acquisition of vast tracts of land
including the lands of farmers like Kashinath Gorle
causing displacement and a loss of livelihoods
says that the protesters were arrested and faced harsh treatment
He recounts his own experience of being picked up by the police while he was on his farm
“The manner in which the police chanted ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai,’ during our arrests gave the impression that the peaceful protesters were anti-nationals and terrorists.”

the protestors were charged under section 353 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC)
which pertains to obstructing a public servant from carrying out their duties
he asserts that there was no interference with any government official’s duty
Bole further alleges that the police resorted to lathi charges
deploying tear gas and restraining those at the forefront of the protests
media access to the protest site was restricted
was conducted under the presence of a large number of police personnel
Approximately 3,500 to 4,000 police personnel from the Maharashtra police force were deployed for the soil testing operation
and the completion of soil testing does not signify the readiness of the oil refinery project,” states Bole
The protestors hold deep concerns regarding the potentially irreversible damage to the pristine environment that has long sustained their livelihoods should the refinery project proceed
The region in question is highly ecologically sensitive
intensifying worries about possible ecological destruction if the project moves forward
In a report sent to the Ministry of Environment
renowned environmentalist Madhav Gadgil has said that the government itself has said in its Ratnagiri Zonal Atlas for Industries paper that there should not be further projects in the region as it would lead to environmental pollution

Amol Bole further highlights a distressing aspect of the land acquisition process
where the farmers were compelled to sell their land to outsiders at significantly reduced prices
these lands were resold at exorbitant rates
exacerbating the sense of exploitation among the affected farmers
"Numerous individuals with political affiliations have deceitfully acquired land from the locals here
The local community should have been duly informed prior to the initiation of this project
How is it that people from Jammu and Kashmir
and other regions were aware of this project before the farmers
They purchased the land here at prices ranging from 2.5 to 3 lakh rupees from the farmers and then sold it for a staggering 40 to 50 lakh rupees
Had they disclosed information about the project beforehand
the farmers would not have sold their lands
The farmers have been deceived," expresses Bole
It has come to light that many government officials have been privy to the intricate details of the refinery plans and are now facing scrutiny for their involvement in questionable land deals
The allegations suggest that these officials took advantage of their positions to engage in transactions that undervalued the land
resulting in significant financial benefits for themselves or individuals associated with them and loss to the farmers
was approached by certain agents seeking to acquire his land
he made the firm decision not to sell his land
Speaking about the utilisation of excessive force by the police
"I was one among many individuals who were prohibited from entering the protest site
The police would arrive in the middle of the night
sometimes surrounding my house with their forces
This began in April and persisted until May
If our mobile phones were ever switched on
leading the police to appear at that very same location
The female protestors also encountered numerous challenges
The 111 women present at the protest site were subjected to lathi charges
including on sensitive parts of their bodies."

a member of the Bhartiya Loksattak Sanghatana
highlights a significant issue surrounding the land acquisition process
the government arrived without prior notice and requested the gram panchayat members to announce a resolution in favour of allocating the land for the oil refinery
they failed to provide any guidance or information regarding the nature and functioning of an oil refinery
Realising the lack of knowledge about the refinery
all falling under the jurisdiction of the Dhopeshwar Gram Panchayat
united and began researching the refinery independently
they became aware of the harmful effects associated with the project
the villagers encountered difficulties from local police officials
This interference has persisted for a period of two years
the villagers of the five affected villages have introduced resolutions through our gram panchayat
clearly stating that we oppose the project
Around 90 per cent of the population in these villages stand against the project
while the remaining 10 per cent are seen as intermediaries or brokers representing the interests of the companies involved,” notes Shivgan
The Probe has approached the Chief Executive Officer and the Joint Chief Executive Officer of Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation
