Virgin Galactic is partnering with Italy’s Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC) to study whether it could launch from Grottaglie Spaceport in Puglia
Virgin CEO Michael Colglazier announced Thursday at the Italian Embassy
The aim is for the Grottaglie Spaceport to serve as a Mediterranean homebase for Virgin’s suborbital commercial and scientific crewed spaceflight
which has been on pause while the company works on its new space tourism vehicle
“When Virgin Galactic fully utilizes the spaceport
we expect our next generation vehicles will fly to space between 250 and 300 times a year
and private citizens traveling this space annually,” said Coleglazier at Space Day
a spaceport becomes a truly amazing place.”
Two Phase Plan: The first phase of the study
will consider whether Grottaglie’s airspace could host Virgin Galactic’s suborbital flights
as well as Italy’s regulatory requirements
and the stability of the supply chain.
Assuming the company finds that the spaceport will suit its needs in those areas
a second phase of the study would look at the workforce that would be required for the missions
as well as how the region could benefit economically from ramping up spaceflight.
“It’s our priority that any expansion into Italy not only be technically feasible
but beneficial to the local community as well,” Colglazier said
“We will work closely with local authorities
and educational institutions in the region to ensure that the community feels the positive impact of our operations and the people we will bring to the spaceport.”
Grottaglie was designated a commercial spaceport by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport
becoming the first horizontal spaceport in Italy
Puglia is already taking advantage of the opportunity
investing heavily in the spaceport’s development
Grottaglie recently received €70M ($73.3M) from the Puglia region and the Italian government for infrastructure development.
“Our government is very concentrated on the space economy
This project is witnessing the aim and commitment we have to the space economy,” Matteo Zoppas

Space tourism company Virgin Galactic—in the middle of a two-year commercial hiatus as it develops its new and improved Delta-class spaceships—is eyeing an international expansion
Virgin Galactic’s seven commercial flights with its VSS Unity spaceplane all launched from Spaceport America in the New Mexico desert, which serves as a hub for the firm’s U.S. operations. The first, Galactic 01
lifted off in June 2023 with a team of Italian researchers from the country’s Air Force and National Research Council
On Thursday, the firm announced it is now working with Ente Nazionale per l’Aviazione Civile (ENAC), Italy’s civil aviation regulator, to study the possibility of launching space tourism flights on Italian soil. According to a statement shared by Virgin Galactic from CEO Michael Colglazier
the company’s ambitions extend to the entire continent
“Development of world-class spaceports in premier locations is essential to our goal of expanding human-first space travel around the world
and we are honored to partner with the Italian government,” Colglazier said
“We are excited to work with Virgin Galactic and demonstrate how Grottaglie Spaceport can provide infrastructure, high level skills and specialized services necessary for suborbital flights,” said Antonio Maria Vasile, president of Aeroporti di Puglia, according to a Virgin Galactic news release
and workforce requirements to launch in Italy
the partners will gauge how well Grottaglie’s airspace and Italy’s suborbital spaceflight rules lend themselves to what the firm is doing in the U.S
the crew-carrying Unity rides beneath the VSS Eve mothership to an altitude of about 15,000 feet
where it boosts to near-space about 54 miles above the Earth
This is short of the Kármán line—an internationally recognized boundary between the Earth and space about 62 miles up—but high enough for customers to experience zero-gravity and see the planet’s curvature
Unity then flips around and glides into a runway landing
Virgin Galactic and ENAC will evaluate what kinds of facilities
and supply chains would be needed for Grottaglie to host these flights routinely
Unity flew paying customers seven times in a little more than a year
but the company’s Delta-class spaceships are being designed to fly eight missions per month
“This work will lay the foundation for safe and sustainable commercial operations in Italy,” said Fabio Nicolai
Virgin Galactic and ENAC will determine if they can source enough workers in the area
They’ll also gauge the economic impact to Puglia and Italy from what the space tourism firm says will be “multiple spaceflights per week.”
“This study lays the groundwork to activate the economic and community benefits of commercial space across the region
and we are thrilled at the prospect of Virgin Galactic customers looking out our spaceship windows to witness the boot of Italy from space,” said Colglazier
Virgin Galactic should have plenty of energy to focus on Italy during its two-year pause in commercial operations, spurred by the retirement of Unity. The company aims to restart space tourism flights by 2026 and expects to begin final assembly of its Delta-class ships at a freshly completed manufacturing facility in Mesa

Leonardo is to halt production of composite centre fuselage barrels for the Boeing 787 at its Grottaglie site in southern Italy for four months as it wrestles to align production with lower short-term demand
it will also add a new final assembly line at the plant for the AW609 civil tiltrotor being developed by its helicopter division
Grottaglie plant produces 787 fuselage barrels
Originally established to build the carbonfibre structures for the 787
Grottaglie has not been running at full capacity for some time
Initially hit by the fall in demand caused by Covid-19
the plant has subsequently struggled with lower-than-expected output due issues elsewhere in Boeing’s production system
including several delivery stoppages to deal with quality problems
Leonardo had been seeking improved contract terms from Boeing for the 787 work and had warned in May it had no information on when output would ramp up again from its then-low levels
Leonardo says work on the Dreamliner will need to pause: “Lower growth in the production and delivery of the Boeing 787 requires a four-month shutdown to align production with the short-term reduction in demand.”
No timeline for the halt has been disclosed
and will require agreement from workforce unions
Leonardo is hopeful 787 production can be increased from early 2025
AW609 tiltrotor is currently built in Philadelphia in the USA
the manufacturer will further diversify operations at Grottaglie
adding a final assembly line for the AW609
Briefing trade union representatives at the site on 24 June
the Italian manufacturer said the site had been selected “as the location for final assembly of the company’s AW609 in Italy”
Initial customer examples of the AW609 are being built at the airframer’s US plant in Philadelphia, although the tiltrotor has yet to secure certification from the Federal Aviation Administration
Leonardo says it sees sufficient demand for the AW609 to justify two assembly lines
The firm order backlog for the type numbers just six examples
No date has been disclosed for AW609 production to begin in Grottaglie
Leonardo has already moved to diversify work at the site

we head down to Puglia where my father-in-law is from
It's become our yearly ritual to spruce up the family chapel with fresh flowers and candles
we catch up with family and soak in all that Puglia has to offer
this amazing town carved into caves and nestled among vineyards on Monte Murge's slopes
just a stone's throw from Taranto in northern Salento
Its centuries-old pottery tradition that's still going strong today
When we arrived in what locals call the "ceramic city," M
headed off with his cousin to check out the Grottaglie airport where another cousin works
The place is named after this World War I hero
who made quite a name for himself in the air force
I wandered through the vibrant pottery district
stopping by our friends the Fasanos' workshop - though I should mention that half the pottery makers here seem to be called Fasano
thanks to all the local quarries providing raw materials
it's been the backbone of the local economy
admiring their beautiful pottery when I couldn't help but notice planes constantly buzzing overhead
One of the guys working there filled me in - turns out Grottaglie's airport boasts Italy's sixth longest runway
But here's the cool part: it's where Leonardo's Aerostructures Division builds chunks of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner
using all sorts of fancy composite materials
They've set up Italy's first aircraft "dismantling center" - basically a giant recycling operation for planes that have reached retirement age
this wild-looking plane called the Beluga (an Airbus A300-600ST) shows up
This beast can haul 51 tons and fly 4,000 km with super-sized cargo
the cousins couldn't stop chatting about the airport - it's clearly their favorite topic
the winter months are perfect - November through February
and this time we lucked out with this cute place called Salentin Home in San Pietro in Bevagna
plus a garden where our cat can roam around
The location's perfect - beach at the end of the street
there's this amazing place called Salina dei Monaci
It's like a five-star hotel for birds - pink flamingos
nesting and feeding among this gorgeous mix of salt-loving plants and Mediterranean shrubs like myrtle and strawberry trees
November 2nd is always special - after paying our respects at the cemetery
This year we tried Don Tuma at Masseria Cuturi
surrounded by these gorgeous vineyards and ancient olive groves. Located in the municipality of Manduria (Taranto)
Masseria Cuturi is a winery where you can also stay overnight
They've got about 75 acres just for growing local grapes like Primitivo and Negroamaro
The building itself is this stunning old farmhouse from the 1800s
complete with some pretty impressive archaeological finds scattered around the property
we couldn't miss a trip to the Porsche Technical Center in Nardò - it's just an hour from Grottaglie
While he was living his best life doing laps on the track
When I mentioned that it seemed big enough already
she gave me this knowing smile and explained that if they can't expand here
Porsche might take their business elsewhere - and nobody wants that

The Italian manufacturer said its southern Italian plant would shut for four months
Multinational Leonardo said its factory in southern Italy will close for as long as four months, due to knock-on delays from Boeing’s manufacturing crisis.
has suffered from “lower growth in the production and delivery of the Boeing 787.” The plant was purpose-built for the assembly of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner’s fuselage sections
But the company said the closure was needed to “align production volumes with the short-term reduction in demand,” Leonardo explained.
The company management met with the Unindustria union in Rome to discuss the changes
which came alongside news that Leonardo had decided the same factory would be used to assemble the AW609 tiltrotor.
Leonardo explained in a press statement that its expansion and diversification of the plant showed the long-term plans for the site
“The development of further strategic initiatives aims to redefine new scenarios for the Grottaglie site as part of Leonardo’s broader strategy of ensuring a sustainable future for its Aerostructures Division
in which approximately 300 million euros have already been invested between 2019 and 2023,” it said.

Virgin Galactic is currently in a two-year hiatus intended to upgrade its fleet following seven commercial flights to the edge of space from its US base at Spaceport America in New Mexico
Virgin Galactic said it had signed an agreement with Italy's ENAC civil aviation authority to study the feasibility of operating missions from Grottaglie Spaceport
"We are very thrilled at the prospect of Virgin Galactic customers looking out of their spaceship windows to witness firsthand the iconic boot of Italy from space," CEO Michael Colglazier said during an event at the Italian embassy in Washington
Phase one of the study would be completed in 2025 to assess Grottaglie's airspace compatibility with Virgin Galactic's requirements and flight profile
The second phase would consider regional workforce requirements and potential economic benefits to Italy and Puglia generated by "multiple spaceflights per week"
"This work will lay the foundation for safe and sustainable commercial operation in Italy," ENAC deputy director general Fabio Nicolai added
a former NASA official who now oversees Virgin Galactic's commercial spaceflight program
indicated operations could commence four to five years from now
and began full-fledged commercial operations two years later
The company competes in the suborbital space tourism market with Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin
A giant Virgin Galactic "mothership" takes off horizontally from a runway
then releases a smaller spaceplane from under its wings
The spaceplane then rockets to the edge of the atmosphere
offering passengers a few minutes of weightlessness and a view of the Earth's curve
Virgin Galactic's first commercial flight in June 2023 featured members of the Italian Air Force and Italy's National Research Council
later flew aboard an Axiom Space mission in partnership with SpaceX to the International Space Station
the private space industry is increasingly enabling greater access to space for national governments
Turkish and Swedish astronauts also flew on the same Axiom mission sponsored by their countries
and Britain is planning its own mission with the same company
Europe currently has no capacity to launch crew from the continent
though Virgin Galactic missions carry the caveat that they fall just short of the Karman Line – the internationally recognised space boundary
Virgin Galactic has been struggling to turn a profit
Its upcoming Delta spaceships will carry six passengers compared to the previous four
Seat prices will be set at $600,000 – much higher than the earlier offerings – the company said in documents which were published prior to the announcement of a possible Italian venture

has found a place at the helm of Leonardo’s (Rome
which is dedicated to the flagship Boeing 787 aeronautics program
She is now plant manager for the plant’s Aerostructures Division
In an interview with La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno
she recalls, “On the day we were hired [16 years ago]
we were told that among us new hires there would be the next head of the plant
but I would not have imagined that one day I would be the boss
I have always believed in it and I have worked hard to become one.”
Marangio coordinates the work of 1,300 people
directing the production facility in the processing of carbon fiber for several important aeronautical programs in the civil and military sectors
She also heads up a team of about 50 people responsible for supporting the manufacture and assembly of two sections of the Boeing 787-8
tools and CNC machine programming in support of workshop activities
According to La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno, Marangio set foot inside the Grottaglie facility for the first time in 2006
just a few months after graduating from the University of Salento
She was selected by the company and placed in a group of “HP” engineers
She worked in configuration management for several years
acquiring skills and responsibilities in the field of production engineering. In 2016
she was appointed manager of technical services
which has led her on her current path assuming responsibility for the entire Taranto plant
I was asked to be given a tour of the facility as it was still being built
I immediately fell in love: Right in front of me
I could see many of the machines and systems I had learned about in my studies
and I had no hesitation in leaving the academic world to begin this journey within the company,” she says
changed the pace in the production of large aeronautical structures
particularly for the fuselage sections of the B787 Dreamliner — Leonardo currently designs and builds 14% of the entire composite structure
including the central and central-rear sections of the carbon fiber fuselage
using an automated, one-piece barrel technology
“It’s a challenge that’s not just technological — introducing innovative materials and processes — but also organizational
requiring a constant increase in productivity up to a maximum of 14 fuselages per month,” Marangio explains
dedication and continuous commitment,” all aspects that she now determinedly applies to new projects coming in
Of the activities that she has been involved in and that she is most proud of
in 2017 — at the height of an accelerated production rate (14 fuselages per month) — the raising in efficiency of Leonardo’s strategic assembly line to cope with the demands and needs of an innovative program)
this meant carrying out a critical review of each step of the process: “We managed to identify several areas with scope for improvement
looking not only at the product but also at the process and the quality,” she says
but one full of achievements shared with my team and the other partners in the 787 program.”
Marangio also mentions another project that she is currently working on with her colleagues — a joint development program for the design
production and testing of carbon fiber fuselages for the Vertical Aerospace VX4 electric aircraft
Skills that she considers essential are analytical ability
together with best practices like process standardization
“With my team I’ve continually pursued internal improvement
and implementing (simple but functional) platforms to share the various steps of the process
from configuration management to work cycles and rework instruction management,” she says.
Marangio’s interest in change and the lesson she has learned about “thinking simple” have been fixed values in her journey
“We need to walk in the world with a persistent curiosity
occasionally losing our balance in the process of learning to walk and then to run,” she believes

Leonardo Helicopters' optionally piloted SW-4 Solo recently completed its first flight without a safety pilot aboard
The flight originated at the Taranto-Grottaglie airport in Southern Italy and lasted for 45 minutes
with all systems onboard reported as performing nominally
Tests on the flight included remote engine start and shut down on the ground; ground run; automatic takeoff and landing; hovering out of ground effect; acceleration to forward flight; automatic waypoint navigation to and from the area of operation; and simulation of a surveillance mission
The helicopter reached an altitude of 1,500 feet and a forward speed of 60 knots during the flight
Leonardo CEO Alessandro Profumo said the Solo’s successful unmanned flight was “further evidence” of the company’s “leading role” in developing unmanned systems
The Solo RUAS/OPH (rotary unmanned air system/optionally piloted helicopter) is derived from the SW-4
and equipped with sensors and advanced systems made by the company in Italy and the U.K
Test campaigns began in 2016 in Grottaglie with a pilot aboard and also in Poland to verify the aircraft’s characteristics in various phases of flight in normal and emergency conditions
Earlier activities in Italy were part of a collaboration that began in 2015 involving Leonardo
and the Distretto Tecnologico Aerospaziale Pugliese for the “Grottaglie Test Bed,” a candidate to become the national and European site for unmanned aircraft testing
The trials are being held in collaboration with the Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC) and the Italian Air Navigation Service (ENAV)

during his residency at fame festival 2011
works by italian artist moneyless are among the first public installations of the 2011 fame festival held in grottaglie, italy. organized annually by studio cromie (angelo milano)
the festival brings together artists from across the world to spend one to four weeks in the city during the spring and summer
and ceramics in advance of a september group show
moneyless’s work experiments with geometric forms in both two and three -dimensional media
based on the forms of threads he nailed into the wall
moneyless gradually began to create real solid figures
floating in space with the support of transparent wires
interested in the visual conflict created by the presence of a manmade
the artist created paint and physical installations throughout grottaglie for this year’s fame festival
in the words of the artist: ‘far from being mere sets of lines
my works are not abstract representations but rather always inspired by elements of the physical world
which I transform or idealize into these unearthly forms
they live more in the world of ideas than in the physical world; they represent ideas
