An ambitious project is underway at the Ferrari carmaker
led by renowned designer Jason Castriota and backed by American investors
We are talking about a series of actions that would go to transform the historic production site into a luxury electric car center
After the closure decided by Stellantis and the failure of the “Luxury Hub” project we all know
the plant seems to have a new life in its destiny
with main goals of sustainability and innovation
Jason Castriota, a Connecticut native with an international career, is particularly famous for designing such icons as the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano and the Maserati Gran Turismo
he had put his signature on the Mantis prototype
his goal certainly seems to be to try to breathe new life into the former Maserati factory
but also to revitalize the entire area in the name of a new innovative manufacturing hub
the questions that immediately arise are very intuitive
will the stated capital stock be sufficient for such a major operation
who should be ready to bring significant resources to bear
the path to taking over production at the former Maserati plant may prove to be anything but simple
But all is not lost, so the revival of the former Maserati “Avvocato Giovanni Agnelli” plant in Grugliasco may soon see the arrival of a new reality
it is an ambitious project that aims to produce “luxury city cars,” a super sports car and the inevitable SUV
The focus of the project would be almost exclusively on electric
as is the trend among almost all major brands
this initiative should be led by a prestigious name in the automotive scene
since it was in Bertone that he had taken fundamental steps in his career
The long unused Maserati plant was put up for sale by Stellantis after the failure of the “Polo del Lusso” project wanted by Sergio Marchionne arrived
About a year after the site was closed by former CEO Carlos Tavares
is reportedly managed by Massimo Segre’s Ipi
which had even posted the ad on real estate portals such as Immobiliare.it
although it was immediately removed after a short time
appears to be linked to Eve Nexus Italia Srl
a company led by himself and based in Turin
which has a share capital of 100,000 euros
a British figure who certainly has a lot of experience in business development in the automotive sector
all details of the negotiations remain confidential
although it is fairly well known that Eve Nexus represents the center of gravity for a consortium of American investors
who would be ready to finance the purchase and finally relaunch the plant
While Maserati has quite an eclectic line-up of late
it has traditionally produced its products in relatively low numbers
News that the 100,000th car has rolled off the Grugliasco production line is news to celebrate for the Italian brand
The 100,000th car is reported to be a white Quattroporte GranSport destined for China
quite fitting as the country is now the largest market for the brand’s flagship saloon
It was produced at the company’s Avv
Giovanni Agnelli Plant where the Ghibli sports saloon and the Quattroporte flagship saloon are constructed
The factory went online in 2013 and has since performed the arduous task of producing Maserati’s most successful models
the Ghibili is by far the biggest in volume
70,000 have come out the production floor recently
The new Levante SUV is actually built nearby at the Fabbrica Italia Mirafiori S.p.A plant
The company’s GranTurismo and GranCabrio are built elsewhere at Viale Ciro Menotti in Modena
FCA Chief Operating Officer for the EMEA Region said: “The Maserati brand’s impressive growth during the last few years has been one of the major developments at the Premium end of the market; the sixth generation of the Maserati saloon
is the best-selling Quattroporte of all time and almost 70,000 units of the Ghibli
meaning that in little more than three years it has become the most successful Maserati of all time
the Brand has now moved into the SUV segment and the ‘Maserati spirit’ has also reached the Mirafiori plant
The men and women who work here at the Avv
Giovanni Agnelli Plant at Grugliasco are already well aware of this
because many of them mentored their Mirafiori colleagues during the production launch and build-up phases for the new Levante SUV
acting as ambassadors for the Brand’s craftsman-like care and attention to detail.”

Car enthusiasts constantly daydream about owning this car or that car
And not just any car factory either: a Maserati factory
The story of the former Maserati factory actually begins 100 miles away, at Alfa Romeo’s Milan headquarters, in 1953. Alfa’s engineers were busy working on the new Giulietta sedan
whose launch was scheduled for the spring of 1954
due to some resonance issues within the car’s steel unibody that were proving tricky to solve
it looked like the Giulietta’s debut would have to be delayed
for one critical reason: The Giulietta’s development had been partly funded through bonds issued by Alfa’s parent company—the state-owned conglomerate Finmeccanica
Said bonds were marketed to small investors with the promise that a few lucky subscribers
The government had no intention of backing out of its obligations
To get out of this tight spot, Alfa greenlit the creation of a small batch of coupés whose bodywork—conveniently—demanded styling and construction by an outside supplier. In this case, the Turinese coachbuilder Nuccio Bertone
The result was the beautiful Giulietta Sprint
penned by Franco Scaglione and presented at the Turin Motor Show in the spring of 1954
The public immediately fell head over heels for Alfa’s sweet little coupé
leading to an influx of orders that subverted Alfa Romeo’s small-batch plans and put Bertone under severe pressure
Remember—the Sprint was meant to be a short-lived stopgap
No investment existed for tooling to manufacture such a car at scale
Each Sprint bodyshell was created by Bertone’s workers the traditional way
as it was customary for low-volume production
But with Alfa Romeo now demanding over 30 Sprint bodies per day to keep up with demand
By outsourcing Sprint body panels to craftsmen scattered all around Turin
while also hiring hundreds of additional workers
Bertone pulled off a miracle that could only happen in 1950s Turin: genuine human craftsmanship on an industrial scale
Around 6000 Giulietta Sprint had already been produced by the spring of 1958
turning Bertone from a simple coachbuilding atelier into a proper industrial complex
The company could now invest in tooling and transition from hand-made panels to pressed ones
all while building a new factory on a large plot of land in Grugliasco
Bertone shifted all its operations to the new facility between 1959 and 1960
and the move marked the definitive transition to spot-welded and pressed panels for all Sprint bodies
These moves led to a sharp increase in productivity
the Grugliasco factory celebrated the production of the 20,000th Giulietta Sprint bodyshell for Alfa Romeo
also placed Bertone at the mercy of the automakers it served
The Turinese firm styled the Giulietta Sprint’s replacement
but Alfa’s decision to build the new Giulia GT in-house sent Nuccio Bertone scrambling to avert the loss in production
by smooth-talking Fiat’s management into a spider based on the small 850 sedan
Penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro and presented at the 1965 Geneva Motor Show, the 850 Spider was a smash hit for Bertone
pushed the Grugliasco factory’s output to over 100 car bodies per day
Much like the 850 Spider it replaced on Bertone’s production line
the X1/9 proved much more popular in America than in its native country
Bertone brought the model’s entire production process in-house and sold it under its own brand until the end of the decade
and the subsequent 1990s and early 2000s marked a steep downturn for the Italian automobile industry
along with the emergence of more flexible production methods that enabled automakers to produce different models on the same assembly line
made it increasingly difficult for Bertone’s factory to secure work
the Grugliasco plant stayed in business mainly because of General Motors’ largesse; three generations of Opel convertibles were produced in Turin between 1987 and 2005
the fate of Bertone’s manufacturing business was sealed
Few things burn cash quicker than a large factory with nothing to make
In 2009, the late Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne took over the idle
bankrupt Bertone factory to turn it into the launchpad for Maserati’s bold
With the Grecale and Levante SUVs representing the brand’s near-term strategy
If it’s bought and turned into some clothing or food factory
I choose to remember these soon-to-be-empty walls for what they are: a monument to one man’s vision in an unrepeatable era of Italian motoring history

Things are looking good for Maserati, which just announced that it has built its 10,000th vehicle at the Avv. Giovanni Agnelli plant in Grugliasco (Turin). Fiat retooled the plant for Maserati and reopened it on January 30 this year, making it the second plant for the Maserati brand after its historic production site in Modena.
The Grugliasco plant currently builds Maserati’s two sports luxury sedans, the Quattroporte and Ghibli
The facility is capable of a daily production of about 140 cars of both models
Since the start of production, which coincided with the unveiling of the new Quattroporte
the plant has built about 8,200 units of the brand’s flagship sedan
as production of the midsize luxury sedan only began at the end of July 2013
The 10,000th vehicle built in Grugliasco was a grey Ghibli. Speaking of the Ghibli, Maserati recently released a new video showing the midsize luxury sedan testing in the wind tunnel. It’s a good excuse to once again check out the elegant lines of the Ghibli, just like the video which showed the car in the climatic tunnel
The footage also serves to show how wind tunnel tests are performed and their contribution to reducing fuel consumption and noise levels in the cabin

The decision was taken due to the drastic decrease in Maserati orders
The Fiom-Cgil of Turin has announced that the decision to dispose of the Grugliasco plant which employs 110 workers and who will be transferred to the Proma site in Bruino has been communicated to the trade unions by the Proma group
“The effects of the lack of assignment of new models to Mirafiori
aggravated by the end of production of the Maserati
inevitably has harmful effects on the components – stated Edi Lazzi
general secretary of the Fiom-Cgil of Turin and Pino Logioco
head of Proma for the Fiom -: this time the ax falls on the head of the historic Grugliasco della Proma factory
At least there will be no employment tensions as all workers will be transferred to the Bruino site
The fact remains that another industrial piece is closed permanently
This makes the need to support the requests of the metalworkers' unions to have a project for Mirafiori with new productions
and for the city of Turin in general which is losing wealth due to the abandonment of its largest industrial sector
is absolutely necessary and will have to be widely participated
not only by metalworkers but in general by the whole city
There has also been a request for further layoffs for the Mirafiori body shop for another three weeks
which will be in continuity with those already carried out
which only worsens the already highly critical situation"

2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Pininfarina celebrates another important milestone in its history: half a century of excellence in aerodynamic and aeroacoustic research
Pininfarina became a leader in this sector when then Chairman Sergio Pininfarina inaugurated the Wind Tunnel in Grugliasco
It was Italy's first wind tunnel to be built for testing full-scale cars
at the time one of only seven in the world
The Wind Tunnel has always been a cutting-edge strategic tool for OEMs in the automotive sector
introducing new challenges in the field of aerodynamic and aeroacoustic development
has made it even more decisive in the search for increasing autonomy and interior comfort
The Wind Tunnel has also proved to be a powerful tool for testing and developing products across all sectors in which Pininfarina is fully committed
"The Wind Tunnel has given our Company a considerable competitive edge
Born as a tool with which Pininfarina developed its own projects
today it's a strategic asset for the Group
thus expanding the portfolio of services that we offer to the market: an activity that supports other sectors beyond the automotive
which also boasts a new logo made especially for its first 50 years
Its testing capabilities are being constantly improved thanks to the development of innovative measurement techniques in both the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic fields
It's also one of the few in the world to have a TGS - Turbulence Generator System able to create various conditions of controlled turbulence

Chery, a strongly emerging Chinese automotive giant, could take over the former Maserati plant in Grugliasco (Turin
the agreement would represent a major step forward in its plan to expand in Europe
with Italy playing a key role in this strategy
would see Chery start production of vehicles of three different brands at the Piedmont plant
in line with the growing demand for sustainable mobility solutions
Chery’s coming to Italy may give a new boost to the domestic automotive sector, creating new jobs and promoting the redevelopment of the Grugliasco production site
the presence of a top Chinese automotive constructor may attract other investments in the sector and help reinforce the Italian industry’s competitiveness
A recent meeting between Chery CEO Yin Tongyue and the Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy
They discussed Chery’s possible entry into Italy and its willingness to invest in the country
Stellantis, the automotive group formed by the merger of FCA and PSA, is open to the sale of the former Maserati plant. CEO Carlos Tavares, however, expressed some concerns about the arrival of the Chinese in Italy, fearing possible “unpopular” choices to maintain the group’s competitiveness.
Chery chairman Tongyue is also in talks with Diversa, an Italian car dealer group that includes AutoTorino. Its goal would be to create a sales network for Chery cars dedicated to the country.
The acquisition by Chery would represent a major breakthrough for the former Maserati plant in Grugliasco, securing its future and opening up new prospects for the Italian automotive sector. Despite Tavares’ misgivings, the mood is one of confident expectation for the deal to materialize.
It remains to follow the evolution of the affair to find out whether Chery will become the new automotive player in Grugliasco.

will join the Fiat 500 at the newly EV-focused Mirafiori factory in Italy
Stellantis will turn its Mirafiori plant into an electric vehicle hub
at which it’ll produce next-generation Maserati sedans
These models will ride a new electrified platform created specifically for Maserati and will enter production between 2022 and 2024
It’s unclear how much variation there’ll be between this new architecture and the STLA Large platform that’ll be rolled out across Stellantis’ North American brands and will underpin
and by establishing an EV hub there Stellantis says it’s giving Italy “a strategic role among the Group’s main domestic European markets”
“Stellantis is working with determination and alacrity to anticipate and prepare for the energy transition of all its Italian industrial sites,” the company said
Production of the Fiat 500 will continue at Mirafiori
which will reportedly still be able to produce internal-combustion and hybrid powertrains
Poland plant that’ll soon build light SUVs for the Jeep
The current Ghibli and Quattroporte are produced in an ex-Bertone factory in nearby Grugliasco
which Fiat Chrysler Automobiles acquired in 2009
and are therefore at the end of their lifecycles
The Ghibli had been rumoured to be on the chopping block
given a redesigned model hasn’t appeared in any of the brand’s future product plans since 2018
the Quattroporte has been more recently slated for replacement
both with an internal-combustion powertrain and an all-electric variant wearing Maserati’s new Folgore moniker for EVs
All Grugliasco employees will move to Mirafiori – hardly challenging
given it’s just 4km away and many of the employees have worked at both locations
The change of strategy at Mirafiori and Grugliasco was discussed on Monday at a meeting with Italian unions at the Economic Development Ministry in Rome
Mirafiori won’t be the only Stellantis factory in Italy that’ll produce EVs
Union officials have said the Melfi plant, which currently produces the Jeep Compass and Renegade
will manufacture four mid-sized EVs from 2024
though they’re almost certain to use the new STLA Medium platform
Stellantis is also building its third European battery plant in Italy at Termoli
Automotive News reports the cost of production in Italy is higher for Stellantis than in other European countries
CEO Carlos Tavares told Italian unions in February that production costs were up to four times higher at factories in Italy than at the ex-PSA plants in France or Spain
though this is largely due to factory under-utilisation rather than higher labour costs
Stellantis isn’t the only company establishing dedicated EV production facilities
General Motors has retooled its Detroit-Hamtramck plant
It’ll produce EVs like the GMC Hummer EV and autonomous Cruise Origin there
Some companies are also building EV facilities from scratch, including Ford with its Blue Oval City project.
Ford announced that it’s creating three massive production plants in the US to increase its EV and battery production, one of which will be a mega campus called Blue Oval City.
The company said it’s investing US$11.4 billion (A$15.7 billion) in this project, which is expected to create around 11,000 jobs.

meaning that in little more than three years it has become the most successful Maserati of all time.”
Still does but now has a chance to drive some of them
Hates driving in traffic but makes up for with a spot of off-roading or the occasional track outing
Maserati will shift production of the Quattroporte sedan from its current base at Modena to an old Bertone facility acquired by Fiat two years ago
"When Quattroporte production ends at the end of this year
that will switch to the ex-Bertone factory
and obviously all production of the new Quattroporte will be at that factory," explained Edward Rowe
the Public Relations Manager for the brand in Australia
"And that factory will also produce the new medium sedan."
The next generation Quattroporte has been recently spotted testing in the open and the medium sedan to which Rowe refers will be a direct competitor to the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes E-Class
which is expected to require capacity of around 2500 units a year
According to the press material issued by Maserati
it's all in line with boosting the company's production output to meet an annual target of 50,000 units a year by 2015
But Edward Rowe says the expansion into the new plant
known as Officine Automobilistiche Grugliasco
is also a reflection of the economic woes in Europe at present
"It's very hard to production-plan at the moment
it's doing it in great jumps and hiccups," Rowe told motoring.com.au this morning
Running down Quattroporte production in one location prior to ramping it up in another leaves Maserati in a slightly vexed situation where staffing levels are concerned
but the company has been keeping government and trade union officials informed of its plans
Current employees will apparently be offered relocation to Grugliasco and restructuring will be managed through the Italian government's temporary layoff benefit schemes
Maserati cannot expand the Modena facility to cope with the added demands of building the Quattroporte and the new
since the plant is located within the city limits
This was principally what prompted the decision to relocate Quattroporte production to Grugliasco
The ex-Bertone plant will have €500 million invested to bring it up to the necessary standard
The company confirmed earlier in the year that the Kubang SUV will be built on a Jeep production line in the US
Rowe says that the new Quattroporte will arrive in Australia near the end of 2013
There's no specific launch date in Australia for the mid-sized sedan or the Kubang
but the global debut for both will take place in 2014
