finale to claim victory while Van Aert might have paid for the effort made to bring back a late attack from Zdenek Stybar (Deceuninck-QuickStep) Stybar went off the front via a clever manoeuvre from Deceuninck-QuickStep Perhaps anticipating that he would not be a match for Van der Poel and Van Aert on a finishing incline less severe than yesterday Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep) slowed his pace while second in the line behind Stybar in the final kilometre allowing the Czech rider a gap of several bike-lengths but could not match Van der Poel’s speed when he opened his sprint and for a second successive stage had to settle for second place Talking about Deceuninck-QuickStep’s ploy Van der Poel explained how “Wout [van Aert] immediately reacted to it and after such a long stage it hurt.  that’s why I was a bit frustrated with myself yesterday when I made a mistake I’m really glad to win today’s stage.”  His victory came after his Alpecin-Fenix team had done much of the work earlier in the stage to bring back the day’s five-man breakaway after the rest of the peloton showed little intent to do so.  With Jumbo-Visma apparently intent on saving energy presumably in order to be fresher when defending Van Aert’s overall lead on tomorrow’s decisive mountain top finish a game of poker played out in the peloton as no team wanted to commit themselves.  and did much of the work so that the catch was made within the final three kilometres.  Van der Poel was grateful to his teammates for the work they put in especially after the team did an amazing job today to close the gap to the first group.” Following Van Aert’s bunch sprint win on the opening stage and Alaphilippe’s uphill victory yesterday today’s result means that all of the 'Big Three' have now won a stage at this year’s Tirreno-Adriatico The bonus seconds picked up at the line also mean they now hold all three podium positions on the GC with Van Aert leading Van der Poel by four seconds and Alaphilippe a further six seconds adrift when the riders will showdown on the race’s only mountain top finish.  Despite missing out on the stage win yesterday Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) retained his lead at the top of the overall classification as well as being a top favourite again for the stage the onus was on his Jumbo-Visma team to make the chase in the peloton the five-man break that formed at the start of the day featuring Mark Padun (Bahrain-Victorious) Guillaume Boivin (Israel Start-Up Nation) and Niki Terpstra (Total Direct Energie) was given a large amount of leeway by Jumbo-Visma stretching their lead to a bigger and bigger advantage until it had reached over nine minutes by the half-way point as teams moved to the front to secure a good position and not get caught out in any potential crosswinds.  Upon reaching these exposed roads at around 100km to go the peloton looked like it might break into pieces at any moment particularly Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) but not before the gap had almost halved to around five and a half minutes.  The slow-down allowed the small groups that had been shed out the back to return to the peloton But one dropped rider unable to return was Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal) the gap to the breakaway began to gradually come down again after Alpecin-Fenix put one rider along with Jumbo-Visma on the day’s only categorised climb (the Poggio della Croce) was enough to bring it down to 3:30 by the summit The impetus again went out of the chase after cresting the climb as no team showed any interest in bringing the break After a significant slow-down that allowed several riders with just 60km left to bring them back.  With the break now far from guaranteed to be caught Alpecin-Fenix at last took it upon themselves to set the pace but once Deceuninck-QuickStep joined them at the front the deficit began to fall at a sufficient rate for the catch to be made did the necessary work to bring the break back.  who was fourth overall and was wearing the white jersey as best young rider in the race suffered a mechanical within the final 20km.  the five men in the breakaway continued to commit and work well together They only began to break up with 11km to go when first Ludvigsson and then Bais struggled with the pace on an uphill drag and were dropped That trio still had a lead of over 20 seconds with 5km to ride just under 3km away from the finish.  There was a significant crash towards the front of the bunch  3.5km from the finish None of the stage favourites or GC contenders appeared to be involved.  With the catch made and the uphill drag to the finish approaching the likes of Jumbo-Visma and Deceuninck-QuickStep contested for the best position at the front Deceuninck-QuickStep won the battle and took control under the 1km to go banner shortly after which Stybar made the ploy that nearly caught Van der Poel and Van Aert out Stephen Puddicombe is a freelance writer based in Bristol and has covered cycling An estimated 117,000 pilgrims visited the teen’s tomb in just the first year after his beatification, the Diocese of Assisi said the day before his feast day, Oct. 12, 2021. The two miracles attributed to the intercession of the teen involved alleged miraculous recoveries for a young boy in Brazil in 2013 and a young woman in Florence in 2022. The miracle Pope Francis recognized May 23 that paves the way for the blessed’s canonization involved a young woman who was born in Costa Rica in 2001 and moved to Florence in 2018 to study. The woman fell from her bicycle at 4 a.m. July 2, 2022, and suffered a serious head injury, according to the dicastery website. Even after emergency surgery removing part of her skull to reduce severe intracranial pressure, doctors warned her family she could die at any moment. An associate of the young woman’s mother began praying to Blessed Acutis the same day, and the mother went to Assisi and prayed at the blessed’s tomb July 8 — the same day the young woman began to breathe on her own again. She slowly recovered basic mobility and a CT scan showed the hemorrhage was gone. After a period of rehabilitation therapy and a complete recovery, she and her mother visited his tomb Sept. 2. Pope Francis has urged young people to learn about Blessed Acutis, who “did a great deal of good things,” despite his short life. “Above all, he was impassioned by Jesus; and since he was very good at getting around on the internet, he used it in the service of the Gospel, spreading love for prayer, the witness of faith and charity toward others,” the pope told young Italians Jan. 29. “Prayer, witness and charity” were the hallmarks of Blessed Acutis’ life and should be a key part of the life of every Christian, he said. beatification in Assisi A statement released by the Diocese of Assisi Oct 1 said the tomb will remain open for veneration until Oct Acutis’ beatification Mass will be held Oct The opening of the tomb was followed by a Mass presided by Archbishop Domenico Sorrentino of Assisi The diocesan statement quoted Antonia Salzano as saying she was “overjoyed that Carlo’s tomb has finally been opened” and that those who have been touched by the young teen’s life “will be able to see him and venerate him in a stronger and more engaging way.” “We hope that through the exposition of Carlo’s body the faithful will be able to raise with more fervor and faith their prayers to God who hope and love for him and for our brothers and sisters just as Carlo did in his earthly life,” she said Photos of the three more Alpecin-Deceunink riders as they edged to the front on the lefthand side of the road Alpecin’s determined bid to keep any late attackers from going clear succeeded completely and although Israel-Premier Tech made it even harder at the front in the last kilometre with Philipsen sitting on wheel five of the line it was clear who remained the reference point Philipsen moved up again in the last 500 metres to fall and skid at speed into the barriers on the lefthand curve giving Bauhaus an even clearer run home and his first victory of the season.  is slightly shorter than Tuesday’s stage with one key defining element early on being the toughest ascent in the race so far though such a major ascent may see a large break go from the gun there’s no telling whether the lumpy second (Alpecin-Fenix) surfed the wheels of rival Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and then unleashed an explosive sprint to win Friday’s stage 3 of Tirreno-Adriatico into Gualdo Tadino The sprint victory brings van der Poel his third road victory of 2021. On Thursday, van der Poel finished a close second to Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) in a tight sprint I was a bit frustrated about myself about my mistake yesterday and I wanted to make it right today,” van der Poel said at the finish especially after the team did an amazing job today to close the gap to the first group.” Van Aert finished second place to defend his overall lead in the general classification The thrilling finish came at the tail end of a hilly 219km day that saw a major pileup with 3km to go take out a handful of contenders. Cameras caught sight of an Astana rider overlapping wheels in the bunch and hitting the deck — the ensuing pileup took down multiple riders, including Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) and Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) The stage finished with a slight uphill ramp before the finish and Deceuninck-Quick-Step launched the decisive move inside 1km to go Czech rider and Alaphilippe’s teammate Zdeněk Štybar attacked off the front and grabbed a sizable gap and the acceleration forced van Aert to close the gap himself Van Aert’s surge drew out van der Poel and Sergio Higuita (EF Education-Nippo) van der Poel was able to come around his longtime rival “Wout immediately reacted to it otherwise it could have been dangerous,” van der Poel said about the move “I think I just made the right decision to follow It was a really hard sprint and it went uphill a bit A five-man break of Mark Padun (Bahrain-Victorious) and Niki Terpstra (Total Direct Énergie) escaped but was kept under watch when they topped nine minutes’ advantage by Alpecin-Fenix Neither Deceuninck-Quick-Step nor Jumbo-Visma showed interest in taking up the chase Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal) abandoned the race suffering from digestive issues With more than two hours and nearly 110km of racing remaining this gap posed a threat and so van der Poel started to do the work to bring back the escapees Nearly 20km later — with about 80km to go — over the only climb the gap to the break has been reduced to three-and-one-half-minutes the gap was extended to nearly six minutes Deceuninck-Quick-Step did come to the front to help Alpecin-Fenix with the chase to continue on for the following 50km Ludvigsson and Bais cracked on a slight uptilt in the road leaving Terpstra and the other two to try to fight to the end and the peloton was just 20 seconds back of the remains of the break when Jumbo-Visma and Deceuninck-Quick-Step were organized on the front The crash near the front at 3.5km disrupted the bunch Former cyclocross world champion Štybar riding in support of Alaphilippe launched his final attack and was chased by the other ‘cross kings van Aert and van der Poel but I think I did the right thing by waiting,” said van der Poel This pace gave opportunity to van der Poel who surfed wheels and closed the final 200m with a massive kick distancing himself from Alaphilippe and van Aert “I was surprised by the move by Alaphilippe “But if I still wanted the victory I had to react and unfortunately I took Mathieu on my wheel which was at that point a waste of energy.” Tadej Pogačar finished 10th on the stage and took over the white jersey for best young rider “I’m happy for the white jersey,” said Pogačar Results provided by ProCyclingStats A relic of Blessed Carlo Acutis is heading back to Ireland where it will continue a tour of the Emerald Isle that has been ongoing since June and will see the relic visit all 26 Irish dioceses The upcoming leg of the tour runs to November 27 and will see the relic visit three more locations The relic in question is a piece of Blessed Carlo Acutis’ pericardium as it is an actual piece of the beatus’ body Carlo Acutis is located at Assisi’s Sanctuary of the Renunciation where many of his relics are housed as well Archbishop Domenico Sorrentino of the Italian Diocese of Assisi-Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino said of the relic’s Irish tour:  "What a blessing it is for the pericardium heart relic of Blessed Carlo Acutis to be welcomed in the Archdiocese of Dublin A press release listed the locations that Bl with the presence of Archbishop Dermot Farrell (25-26 November) In June, the relic visited the Irish Archdiocese of Armagh and the Diocese of Down and Connor, before it made an appearance at World Youth Day. In September the relic returned to Ireland where it was displayed for veneration at four more parishes The relic’s tour of all 26 Irish dioceses is expected to continue well into 2024 Yates picked up three more seconds on the defending champion Tom Dumoulin by taking bonuses from the intermediate sprint, but his Mitchelton-Scott team-mate Esteban Chaves lost second place overall and dropped out of the top 10 in a blow for the team. Read moreYates now leads by 41 seconds from the Dutchman Dumoulin with Thibaut Pinot of Groupama-FDJ in third at 46sec and the home hopeful Domenico Pozzovivo (Bahrain-Merida) a minute off the lead What was expected to be a quiet transition stage – over the longest distance of the entire Giro at 244km – turned into a frantic day of racing after Chaves was dropped on the category-two climb which opened the day’s racing With Quick-Step Floors’ star sprinter and overall points leader Elia Viviani the race split into two as several teams in the peloton worked together to distance them With 90km left the second group gave up the chase and attention turned to the front where Yates nipped ahead of Pinot to take the three bonus seconds from the intermediate sprint A series of attacks began late in the day with stage honours on the line and as the tension increased Dumoulin was caught in a small crash with the Team Sunweb man needing a bike change before chasing back on As the attacks petered out the Slovenian Mohoric of Bahrain-Merida stayed clear alongside AG2R La Mondiale’s Nico Denz and had enough to hold off the German at the line Mohoric finished 34sec ahead of the main bunch which Mathieu van der Poel achieved his goal of a stage win in this years Tirreno-Adriatico with victory on stage 3 the Dutch champion beat race leader Wout van Aert and Davide Ballerini on the uphill finish the Dutch champion beat Wout van Aert and Davide Ballerini on the uphill finish the peloton headed from the Tuscan village of Monticiano to Gualdo Tadino in Umbria Niki Terpstra was in the early breakaway with Davide Bais Tobias Ludvigsson and Guillaume Boivin and a little later Mark Padun Ludvigsson and Padun were the best placed riders at the front During the undulating opening phase of the race the breakaway’s lead quickly increased to more than eight minutes after 70 kilometres Van Aert’s teammates set the pace in the peloton the peloton suddenly started to react to the breakaway’s big lead The team of Arkéa Samsic increased the pace and this caused the large peloton to be stretched reducing the gap with the leading group to six minutes During the agression out on the road to bring the breakaway back Tirreno-Adriatico said goodbye to Caleb Ewan second on the opening stage and carrier of the maglia ciclamino had fallen behind and then got into the team car Robert Gesink (Jumbo Visma) put in a lot of effort on the climb and brought the peloton to within 3:28 of the breakaway did not want to do all the dirty work on its own so the breakaway’s lead quickly ran back out to six minutes which states that a peloton takes a minute out of a breakaway every ten kilometers the large group still had a chance of catching them but the five at the front had a nice margin Alpecin-Fenix and Deceuninck-Quick-Step then took up the chase and the gap was soon tumbling the difference remained stable between thirty seconds and the minute the last gap was closed by the teams of the strong men and the run-up to the final sprint could really begin The “big three” Mathieu van der Poel Wout van Aert and Julian Alaphilippe were all close to each other Zdenek Stybar emerged at the head of the peloton The World Champion slowed down on purpose with 800 meters to go allowing the former Czech national champion to pull clear and put 30 meters between him and the group That prompted a move from other riders such as race leader Wout Van Aert who closed the gap with Van der Poel on his wheel The Dutchman then waited for the right moment to take the victory Mathieu’s father Adrie also won a stage in Tirreno-Adriatico Mathieu van der Poel: On today’s stage the Dutch champion wanted to take revenge after he was not well positioned in the final sprint yesterday “I was really happy when I crossed the line,” said Van der Poel after his victory especially after the team had worked great to close the gap to the leading group.” Zdeněk Štybar opened the sprint after which Julian Alaphilippe let a gap open to his teammate Wout van Aert had to chase and took the Dutch champion with him on his wheel It was important that Wout responded immediately I think I made the right decision by following Van der Poel said in advance that he was coming to Tirreno-Adriatico to win a stage “I really wanted to win a stage and that’s why I was so frustrated yesterday after making a mistake So I am extra happy that I took the victory today I hope that I can now maintain this form until the Belgian classics ” Wout van Aert: “It took a lot of strength to get Stybar back It was a bad race situation to sprint for the win with Mathieu in my wheel I had the feeling there was more to it if I hadn’t had to put in a maximum effort sooner a second place and again extra bonification seconds is a good result I think the people at home are the big winners They have been treated to a high level race between the absolute world-class riders over the past few days.” An important test awaits Van Aert tomorrow with an eye on the general classification “It will be a tough task to defend the leader’s jersey I’m going to try to hang on to it for as long as possible and if I get dropped we will know more about the possibilities for a good position in the GC It would be beyond all expectations if I can keep the jersey Tomorrow night we will assess our possibilities and see what else is possible.” Greg van Avermaet (AG2R): “It was a tough day It was nervous all day and we had to drive fast ” I still had to make a little effort myself to start the last kilometer well Julian Alaphilippe dropped a gap for his teammate Zdeněk Štybar because I lost a few places to start my sprint Christophe Laporte (Cofidis): “It was a fast and quite difficult day,” said Laporte “At the foot of the final climb I was able to keep myself in position Guillaume attacked because the pace dropped a bit and others started from behind I hoped Roglič would weaken a bit after his effort “But now that I’m second after Roglič Davide Ballerini (Quickstep) “It was an intense final and I was in Julian’s wheel when he left a hole that allowed Styby to take his chance,” said Ballerini “Unfortunately the others were on their toes and caught up with him we were held up slightly by another rider and we had to slow down which is a good result given the circumstances We still have four stages to go and still want to achieve good results” Tadeji Pogačar (UAE): “I am happy to be able to start tomorrow wearing the white I’ll be looking for a good result: 20 seconds separate me from the top of the standings we will see in Prati di Tivo if it is a small or substantial margin I’m feeling good but today was a hard long day in cold temperatures so the focus now is on recovery
