The comedy duo has an ambitious goal for 2026: to hold the comedy show with the largest number of spectators in history
Jo Koy and Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias told the LA Times recently
It turns out the comedy duo is heading to SoFi Stadium next year
This will be the venue’s first stand-up performance
If they sell out SoFi, with a capacity of about 70,000 people
they’ll set a Guinness World Record for the largest comedic audience
The current record is held by German comedian Mario Bath
who hosted a show at Olympiastadion in Berlin in July 2008
only one thing needs to happen: sell out all the seats
You can get your tickets for a night full of laughs and be part of history by purchasing them on Ticketmaster
the Braves got a right-handed home run and a win over the Dodgers
Having Raisel Iglesias come in with a single run lead had me on the edge of my seat
All he did was elicit a 77 MPH single and strike out the next three hitters with Hyeseong “The Comet” Kim causing havoc behind him
That’s as good as I have seen Raisel Iglesias in a while
How long exactly it has been is up for your debate
But that was definitely the best one this year
in a game the Braves could have really used a win
Raisel has struck out three batters in a game already this year
but also gave up the winning home run versus the Phillies on April 9th
He struck out four of six Giants in two innings in a win last August
when he was in the midst of a span of nearly three months without an earned run given up
It would really be fun to see that Raisel again

Iglesias has surrendered more home runs than he did all of last season
He entered last nights save situation against the Dodgers with a 5.25 ERA and 6.97 FIP for the 2025 season which is not what you want to see from your closer
Raisel Iglesias’ 2025 season with the Atlanta Braves got off to a very rocky start
It had been just 12 innings of work, but the results have been particularly concerning because of all the hard contact Iglesias has surrendered
On top of that Iglesias’ strikeout rate isn’t what it once was
there are legitimate worries of decline for Iglesias
Earlier this season, he blew a save in Los Angeles before giving up a walk-off homer to Shohei Ohtani. Last night against those very same Dodgers, fans at Truist Park held their collective breath that tonight’s save situation wouldn’t have the same fate. Iglesias made it interesting, but he eventually got the job done and may have turned his season around in the process
Raisel Iglesias's 3Ks in the 9th...and Sword. ⚔️ pic.twitter.com/PXzfR4cisg
It was a one-run game when Raisel entered the ninth inning looking to end the Braves three game skid
The baseball gods seemed to be laughing at Braves fans when the inning begun with a 77 mph infield single off of Ozzie Albies' glove
Pinch runner Hyeseong Kim immediately stole second base to get in scoring position before Iglesias recorded an out
What ensued next were some of the best executed pitches of the season for Raisel
He begun his bounceback by striking out catcher Will Smith on a sinker running in on him
Kim moved up to third on the dropped third strike
who had already homered earlier in the game
Iggy got Rojas on three beautifully located changeups
Austin Barnes stepped up with Ohtani lurking in the on-deck circle
With the game-tying run 90 feet away Iggy fired three straight fastball to get ahead in the count before polishing off the save with a filthy slider off the plate that Barnes chased

Canelo-Scull was a damp squib for the undisputed 168lbs title in Saudi Arabia, with Scull using the ring and Canelo not cutting it off. Between them, Canelo and Scull combined to throw the second fewest amount of punches in CompuBox’s 40-year history, throwing 152 punches.
Scull is now 23-1 (9 KOs), while Canelo is 63-2-2 (39 KOs) and moving onto a September super-fight with Terence Crawford. Yet Estephan is keen to see the rising Osleys Iglesias get his chance.
Iglesias has stopped 12 of his 13 victims and is waiting to see now what the IBF will do about the mandatory position, and what might happen with eliminators.
But, despite his lack of pro experience, Iglesias – the 27-year-old “El Tornado” – is ready for the world leaders, said his promoter.
“He definitely is ready for anyone,” Estephan added. “He’s the IBO champion, so currently obviously the four federations are with Canelo, The Ring as well, but the only other belt of significance is the IBO and Iglesias is the champion. So we’re trying to put him in a position where people have to face him, because that’s just how avoided he is, and understandably so.”
Of course, Iglesias is not the only bullet Estephan has to fire at the top dogs at 168lbs. Christian Mbilli, 28-0 (23 KOs), meets Maciej Sulecki on June 27 in Quebec City, for the WBC interim title.
“So in the division we feel we have the best two guys,” he added. “And we’re ready to go after them all. The cream rises to the top, and they can run but they can’t hide.”
Another Eye of the Tiger contender, standout amateur Imam Khataev, meets Cuban southpaw David Morrell on July 12 in New York.
Light-heavyweight Khataev is 10-0 (9 KOs), while Morrell is coming off a defeat to David Benavidez.
“It’s going to be an interesting firefight,” said Estephan. “Definitely not the boring one we saw last night.”

Photo of Xander Bogaerts at Petco ParkXander Bogaerts entered Tuesday night’s game against the Giants with five RBIs in 28 games.
Then he went 2-for-4 Tuesday with his first home run of the season and three RBIs.
It was Bogaerts’ first home run since last Sept. 21 and his first game with three or more RBIs since Aug. 11, 2023. Before Tuesday night, Bogaerts hadn’t had an RBI since April 8 — a span of 17 games.
— Both Luis Arraez and Jason Heyward had hits Tuesday night in their return from the injured list. Arraez (.289) was 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly while extending his hitting streak against the Giants to seven straight games. Heyward (.217) was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
— 2B Jose Iglesias (.279) was 1-for-4 with 2 RBIs Tuesday, his fourth multi-RBI game of the season.
— The Padres had their 14th game this season with 10 or more hits. But it was also their first since April 20.
— RHP Nick Pivetta wasn’t at his sharpest Tuesday (three runs allowed on five hits and a walk with nine strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings). But he still improved to 5–1 in six starts with a 1.78 earned run average, a 0.821 WHIP and 39 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings. His five wins leads the National League.
Photo of Nick Pivetta at Petco ParkPADRES ON DECK:
Two Padres minor league shortstops were named Players of the Week in their respective leagues for April 22–27.
And Francisco Acuna, 25, was the Player of the Week in the Double-A Texas League for going 10-for-22 with a double, four home runs, 13 RBIs, three walks, two stolen base and eight runs for a .455/.538/1.045/1.584 slash line.
№1 prospect Leo De Vries, 18, was selected the Player of the Week for the High Single-A Midwest League. And exactly one week after going 5-for-5 while hitting for the cycle plus a home run for eight RBIs, De Vries (.290) fell a triple short of a second cycle Tuesday night for High Single-A Fort Wayne. He was 3-for-3 with a double, a home run, a walk, 3 RBIs and 3 runs.
3B Rosman Verdugo (.219), the Padres’ №24 prospect, was 2-for-4 for Fort Wayne Tuesday with a double, a RBI and a walk.
Starting RHP Henry Baez (3.18 earned run average), the Padres’ №12 prospect, gave up 2 hits and a walk with 8 strikeouts over 7 shutout innings for San Antonio.
Starting LHP Kash Mayfield (0–2, 5.02 ERA), the Padres’ №3 prospect, gave up 3 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks with 2 strikeouts over 5 innings to suffer the loss for Single-A Lake Elsinore. C Lamar King Jr. (.304), the Padres’ №29 prospect, was 2-for-4 with a double.
TRIPLE-A EL PASO (12–15) — Chihauhuas at Oklahoma City, postponed, rain. The game will be made up Thursday (May 1) as part of a doubleheader.
DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (12–10) — MISSIONS 2, Corpus Christi 0: C Brandon Valenzuela hit a 2-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth.
HIGH SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (11–11) — TIN CAPS 12, Dayton 6: C Brendan Durfee (.290) was 4-for-4 with 3 doubles, a walk, 2 RBIs and 3 runs. 2B Brandon Butterworth (.308) had 2 doubles in 4 at-bats with a walk, 2 RBIs and a run. RHP Tyler Morgan (2–0, 3.31 ERA) had 5 strikeouts in 3 perfect innings to earn the win.
SINGLE-A LAKE ELSINORE (7–15) — Inland Empire 5, STORM 0: 3B Zach Evans (.341) was 2-for-3 with a walk.
April 30, 1993 — Right fielder Tony Gwynn goes 5-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored and shortstop Ricky Gutierrez is 4-for-5 with two runs scored as the Padres defeat the Mets 7–6 at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.

The Magazine of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Field
Dungeon Crawler Carl, Matt Dinniman (Dandy House 979-8-6885-9150-7, $13.99, 400pp, tp) September 2020
Dungeon Crawler Carl is not really a book; it’s a long joke
It has spots where it is juvenile or a little slow
but author Matt Dinniman clearly had a blast writing it
and that shines through and makes the novel a very enjoyable read
Carl is a Coast Guard veteran who likes to stay in shape
He is in the immediate aftermath of the end of a relationship
When the cat slips out of the apartment in the middle of a cold night
Carl finds himself with no pants and no shoes
trying to save the kitty from becoming a Popsicle
One second in which every building in the world collapses into nothingness
Once Carl receives instructions and enters a portal that takes him into the game show
which operates just like an adventure/survival video game
Watched by billions of viewers across the universe
Carl and Princess Donut must fight to survive
learning how things work as they progress and watching the number of contestants become smaller by the second
Making it all the way to the end seems impossible
Carl and Princess Donut focus on just making it to the next level
This is definitely a book that will appeal to gamers and well as younger audiences
Dinniman managed to inject some emotional moments and a few smart critiques into this narrative
gory fight scenes worthy of a horror novel; everything here is over the top
It’s hard to take a talking cat who is a diva seriously
it would be easy to think that Carl will never grow into a likeable
but the author also manages to pull that off
The result is a story that follows a man with no pants and a talking cat used to winning contests as they fight monsters
become a popular duo in the deadly TV show they’re part of
and do everything they can to stay alive and get to the next level before their time to do so is up and they die
and there are pages in which repetition makes it clear that this should not be a 464-page book and would probably work better if it was much shorter
but the important thing here is that the novel never becomes boring and while the pacing varies
the novel’s shortcomings are easy to overlook when faced with the way the author made sure readers could follow the action and learn how things work
readers can see Carl using the menu in his head
and doing that clearly and easily is no easy task
Dungeon Crawler Carl is the first of seven books
It was originally self-published and was then picked up by a big publisher because it became a success
That the book is the first in a series becomes apparent early on
but that doesn’t distract from all the action
and the ending is not the kind that makes readers angry
Are Carl and Princess Donut complex enough to sustain a seven-book series
but I already have the second one and I’m looking forward to digging in

Iglesias allowed a hit and struck out three in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Dodgers
Iglesias has strung together three scoreless outings for the first time this season
The veteran closer had some struggles in April
Those issues are reflected in his 4.85 ERA
but he's added a 1.00 WHIP and 15:2 K:BB while converting six of eight save attempts over 13 innings this season

PEORIA, Ariz. -- OMG, Jose Iglesias has landed in San Diego
Iglesias’ hit recording “OMG” became the theme song and rallying cry for the Mets during their second-half march to the NLCS in 2024
and it also seemed to inspire a career resurgence that led to a .337 batting average and an .829 OPS
readying for another postseason run of their own
have agreed to a Minor League contract with Iglesias
a source told MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell on Wednesday
and he is expected to arrive in camp Thursday
He is to earn $3 million if he makes the Major League roster
Manager Mike Shildt said he made “quite a bit” of the part Iglesias played in energizing the Mets last season
“Clearly the [Mets] played very well toward the end
“Talking to some people who observed that club and were around that area
relative to his performance on the field and knowing how to play but also the way he went about it
He played 28 games for the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate in El Paso in the 2023 season
and after signing a Minor League deal with the Mets
spent the first two months at Triple-A Syracuse before having his contract selected May 31
The Mets were 52-33 in games that Iglesias appeared in and 39-30 in games that he started
they went 66-40 after selecting his contract
Integral part of a lot of clubs and their success
“Primarily seen him across the field in New York and Colorado
There’s some familiarity and some respect there
It is a good opportunity for him to compete for a spot on the club
What Iglesias’ addition means for the roster is unclear
although adding proven depth is never a bad thing
“It’s all on the table,” Shildt said of the position battles and time juggling that might occur
That’s a benefit of what we know coming in
This guy’s a proven defender regardless of where you put him.”
The Padres did not appear to have a ringing need for an additional infielder
with the projected third-to-first alignment of Manny Machado
the Padres could find more time for Cronenworth at first base and Arraez at DH
Cronenworth split time between first base and second last season
and first was his primary position in 2023
He is credited with four defensive runs saved by FanGraphs in his five career seasons at first
who locked up his third straight batting title in 2024
but it would not be out of the question to see him take more at-bats as the DH
where the Padres do not appear to have a set-in-stone candidate
Arraez made 61 starts at first base and 46 as the DH for the Padres last season after being acquired from Miami on May 4
Arraez was minus-three in runs saved at both first base and second last year
Eguy Rosario and Tyler Wade are projected as primary infield reserves
Rosario has spent time in the infield and outfield this spring
so the Padres risk losing him if he doesn't make the team out of spring
Reserve outfielder Connor Joe also has played first base
and he could provide a right-handed-hitting option at DH in matchup situations
Iglesias was particularly effective last September
He became the Mets’ starting second baseman after Jeff McNeil suffered a fractured wrist in early September
I began writing about books for the New York Times in late 2023 and officially began my tenure as the horror fiction columnist for the New York Times Book Review in January on 2024
but it often makes me miss something else I love with all my heart: crime fiction
and writing about what I read is what I’ve always done
Start a column to talk about crime fiction
a place that has supported me from the start
there’s one thing that all Steve Cavanagh novels share: you start reading
Eddie and the gang are back and trying to tackle a complex murder case that went down in one of the city’s most affluent neighborhoods
but the truth is weaker than Jackson’s DNA on the murder weapon
While Eddie works on getting to the bottom of the Jackson case
he must also stay busy keeping himself alive because some fine members of New York’s Finest want him dead
and they’ve put a bounty on his head
carefully plotted narrative we’ve come to expect from Cavanagh while also being its own thing
The story is packed with tension and more questions than answers
a character that quickly becomes half the heart of the story
is an intriguing character whose agenda drives the plot but also a vehicle through with Cavanagh explores identity and belonging in the world of the ultrawealthy
Reading an Eddie Flynn novel is never not fun
and Witness 8 is a blast even when Bloch’s not around
Jean Echenoz’s Command Performance is an amazing novel
but in the same way that a tomato is a fruit; sure
Gerard Fulmard lost his job as a former flight attendant under some bad circumstances and desperation pushed him to try his hand at being a private detective
and it quickly turned into a dangerous disaster
Gerard starts working for a shady political splinter group
bizarre journey inside the group will lead him to murder
unpredictable animal that’s also very colorful
so you read and enjoy it even if there at times when you’re not exactly sure what’s happening and wouldn’t dare a guess as to what comes next
the story starts with a bizarre catastrophe
and every character in the novel has a quirky biography and unique personality
That Echenoz weaves these elements into a satisfying read is a testament to his talents as a storyteller
Hannah Deitch’s Killer Potential is an impressive debut that shows its author has exactly that
Evie Gordon was on the path to greatness from early on
Evie now makes a living as an SAT tutor rich kids in Los Angeles
She spends hours in fancy living rooms and posh kitchens and enjoys peeing in magazine-worthy bathrooms
Evie’s life isn’t that exciting
and the bright future she was promised–all that upward social mobility her education would provide–is nowhere to be found
Evie shows up to a tutoring session on a Sunday and finds an open door and a quiet house
And then a woman trapped in a closet and crying for help
After one more surprisingly violent encounter in the house
now not only scared and confused but also murder suspects with no clue about who the killer could be and nowhere to go
The first third of this novel is amazing and the voice is an electric
and the way Deitch manages the mysterious woman
and the way she comes out of her shell are all great elements here
the narrative loses its power halfway through as it switches into a sort of introspective love story that lacks the intensity of the start
I find it really cool when a novel gives me very specific things and I can connect with them immediately
Like Evie–and like Deitch–I worked as a tutor for rich kids
Deitch nails the awkwardness and the dynamics of that job perfectly and with the perfect amount of cynicism
faulty debut that explodes at first and then fizzles out
but it contains enough good stuff to make want to check out whatever Deitch does next
and that’s not something all debuts pull off

fast-paced narrative written by a “debut” author who brings to the table decades of accumulated knowledge and a deep understanding of pacing
Police Chief Jeep Mullane used to work as a cop in New York City
but after a very personal case broke him while also earning him a NYPD detective’s shield
Jeep opted to return home to Long Island’s North Shore to run a small new local police department
but while Jeep settles in relatively quickly
the things he ignored in the past and the big differences between hardworking people like himself
and the wealthy families that populate the area start rubbing him the wrong way and making his work a little harder
When Jeep gets a call about the body of a drowned man who turns out to be one of his best childhood friends
his new role as the law in town clashes with his past
that meant feeling like an outsider and knowing Johnny and him would have different paths in life
As Jeep navigates his grief and tries to get to the bottom of Johnny’s death
he is also forced to deal with the wounds of his recent past
Johnny’s secretive family and overbearing father
This novel is always moving forward at breakneck speed
Short chapters–many of them carried mostly by dialogue–and Wade’s lean prose make this a quick read
which occupies center stage and delivers the biggest emotional punches
is happening now as Jeep investigates his friend’s death
which provides context and helps with character development
follows Jeep and Johnny back at the end of their high school days when they played lacrosse together
the chapters from the past end up revealing too much and giving away all of the pieces of the puzzle
There are a few tropes here that might have worked better on television
including things like Latinx bad guys with tattooed tears and a cop talking about how good cops are and how rough the gig is
Johnny Carless is an impressive debut from a voice that sounds like a veteran because it comes from a veteran who knows how to tell a story

May Hanover is one of those people who likes to follow the rules

Lauren and Kelsey have experienced things like what happened to May–scandals also altered their lives forever–so their bond is deep despite their bumpy past
the three friends have a bad experience with a parking spot that leads to a prank that goes horribly wrong and quickly becomes an investigation that threatens to expose the three friends to the world once again
the intricate way in which Burke examines female friendship and the lingering impact of trauma after it has been amplified by social media make this a remarkable novel

Josie Fair is in a pub with her much older husband celebrating her forty-fifth birthday
At the same pub and doing the same thing–also for her forty-fifth birthday–is Alix Summer
the encounter is a funny “I found my birthday twin” story for Alix
but it has a much deeper meaning for Josie
When the two women run into each other again
Josie talks to Alix about an idea she had while listening to her podcast
which she has been obsessed with since meeting Alix at the pub on their birthday night
but when she and Josie start working together
she realizes Josie might not be who she says she is
A story about lies that also delves deep into topics like pedophilia
None of This is True is a dark spiral of tension that gets weirder and creepier as it goes
Josie’s unhealthy obsession with Alix and the way she wedges herself into the podcaster’s life is only the start
and everything leading up to is even worse
one of the most interesting elements of the narrative is the snippets of a true crime Netflix documentary that readers “see” by reading audio from the podcast as well as interviews done after with people who knew Josie and Alix

Reunion with Mets in '25 unlikely for infielder and OMG singer IglesiasFebruary 12th
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Jose Iglesias, the shortstop-turned-musician whose “OMG” single became an anthem for the 2024 Mets
will always be remembered as a symbol of that team
But he’s not likely to reprise his role in 2025
President of baseball operations David Stearns confirmed on Wednesday what had been apparent for some time
that Iglesias is unlikely to return this season
the Mets want several of their younger players to compete for his old job as a backup infielder
“I think where we are now for that role on our team
it’s important for us to keep some avenues open for some of our younger players,” Stearns said
“We think it’s important for us to have some roster flexibility with that spot.”
Had Iglesias signed a big league deal to return to the Mets, their bench would have been full at the outset of camp, with no wiggle room for younger players like Luisangel Acuña (2024 No. 12 prospect) or Brett Baty to compete for jobs
Other infielders in camp include Jared Young
the latter of whom is a natural second baseman who’s taking shortstop reps this spring
Madrigal is a prime contender for the Mets’ final bench spot
Acuña is likewise a tempting consideration because he can play shortstop
but Mets officials may prefer to have the 22-year-old play every day in the Minors rather than sparingly in the Majors
If the Mets choose to go without a true backup shortstop
Baty or Young could entice them with a strong camp
The Mets’ Opening Day bench will likely consist of a catcher (Luis Torrens)
two outfielders (Starling Marte and Jose Siri) and one infielder
Coming off a season in which he hit .337/.381/.448 in 85 games for the Mets
Iglesias switched agents to Scott Boras at the start of the offseason but remains unemployed
Iglesias was in this situation as recently as 2023
when he sat out the second half of the season because he could not find a Major League deal
Iglesias is a career .283 hitter with a .710 OPS

MLB Trade Rumors
By Steve Adams | March 5
The Padres and free agent infielder Jose Iglesias are reportedly in agreement on a minor league contract
The Boras Corporation client will earn a $3MM base salary if he makes the roster and can take home another $1MM via incentives
That’s a bit heavier base than the standard minor league pact
which seems reflective of Iglesias’ 2024 season and perhaps strong interest on non-guaranteed deals of this nature
enjoyed a tremendous comeback season in 2024 after not appearing in the majors at all in 2023
(He spent a portion of that season with the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate.) Originally signed to a minor league deal by the Mets
Iglesias was summoned to the big leagues in late May as a scuffling Mets club shuffled up a roster that had produced a 24-33 record through the season’s first two months
The 12-year veteran went on to appear in 85 games and slash .337/.381/.448 in 291 turns at the plate
He also became a key figure in the Mets’ clubhouse and a fan favorite whose “OMG” song became an anthem for the Mets as they turned their season around and marched to an NLCS appearance that looked wildly improbable at the time of Iglesias’ call to the majors
Re-signing Iglesias would’ve effectively left the Mets with a static 13-player position core
as Alvarez isn’t likely to be optioned at any point in the near future
That would leave the Mets playing with a short bench anytime a position player needed a couple days off with a minor injury or illness
there’s simply good reason to believe that Iglesias’ output was unsustainable
He benefited from a sky-high .382 average on balls in play that sat 72 points higher than his career mark entering the 2024 season
That surge in batted-ball results came despite Iglesias producing bottom-of-the-scale marks in terms of average exit velocity (85.8 mph)
barrel rate (2.2%) and hard-hit rate (30.6%)
based on his eventual contract — other clubs around the league clearly didn’t expect him to replicate or even approximate his 2024 results
that shouldn’t take away the entirety of what Iglesias did with the Mets
He continued to demonstrate superlative contact skills
fanning in only 12.4% of his plate appearances
He’s also retained plus sprint speed even as he’s entered his mid-30s
and landing in the 83rd percentile of big leaguers as a result
Iglesias also played strong defense at both third base and second base
per Defensive Runs Saved and Outs Above Average
He’s not going to be the batting title contender that a cursory look at his 2024 line might suggest
but even a dip to his “expected” .314 weighted on-base average (via Statcast) would make him a useful utility infielder
If the Friars want to affordably bolster their infield defense
shifting Arraez to a DH role and moving Cronenworth back to first base could open second for Iglesias
The Padres aren’t going to carry all three on the roster
given his ability to handle any infield spot other than first base
Rosario isn’t yet arbitration-eligible and is thus earning roughly the league minimum
Wade’s $850K salary is barely north of the minimum
suggesting the Friars would prefer to keep him around
Iglesias is an Article XX(b) free agent — meaning he’s a free agent with more than six years of MLB service who finished the preceding season on a major league roster or injured list
The 2022-26 CBA stipulates that such free agents who sign minor league contracts have three uniform opt-out opportunities baked into the contract: the first being five days prior to Opening Day
the second on May 1 and the third on June 1
if Iglesias is informed late in camp that the Padres don’t plan to carry him on the Opening Day roster
he can trigger that out clause and explore opportunities with other clubs
Robert Murray of FanSided first reported the agreement between Iglesias and the Padres. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported it was a minor league deal and also was first on the terms of the contract
San Diego Padres Transactions Jose Iglesias
I don’t think it’s an accident he goes from team to team every year
Fans viewed him as a positive unifying story on the Mets last year
but reports indicate teams aren’t happy on the inside about his antics
If people would put the new cover sheets on the TPS reports the people that need to read them would
I’m not sure what Lord is referring to but Iglasias was amazing in 21 when the Sox got him in September due to injuries
They don’t make the playoffs without him
he became a dugout cheerleader even though he couldn’t be added to the roster
Joel Sherman has reported on this but has also said everyone he’s spoken to with the Mets said he was a great teammate this past season
and again why Detroit let him walk in free agency
youtube.com/watch?v=Fy3rjQGc6lA
“great teammate”…I’ve no reason to think he’s anything but a good teammate
but I don’t read too much into the “good teammate” or “bad teammate” narrative
one sided and rife with conflicts of interest
that “good teammate” oftens means that he’s been cooperative with that particular reporter
gives inside info and he or she likes that particular player
“Bad teammate” far too often means uncooperative with reporters and didn’t give them the scoop or the face time they wanted
There are zero reports ever where Iglesias has been accused of “antics.”
There are actually plenty of reports “ever”
Or any of the Tigers fans who put up with his attitude
I do not doubt the ’24 mets players loved him
vintagedetroit.com/iglesias-never-seemed-intereste…
His nickname is Candelita or Firecracker because of his fiery temper
He has been accused of taking plays or whole games off on defense his entire career and that tendency has angered his teammates on multiple teams from Boston to Detroit to Cincinnati and there were issues on each team
Since I first met him in 2023 he seems to be a great guy to be around in camp
as a fan I only get to see him joking around with his teammates on the practice fields and in the dugout
Like Profar who was very intense early in his career
Iglesias seems to have mellowed as he grew older and become one of those fun and funny guys that players like to be around
but the Padres have been very focused on culture and camaraderie on the team since Shildt was hired and if Iglesias was a bad apple
I doubt Shildt and Preller would want him on the team
Not specifically about Iglesias here but …along those lines: Baseball Clubhouses are so diverse these days
I find it very hard to believe that ball players get along with absolutely everyone in the clubhouse
It’s Human Nature for 30-40 young men to devolve into cliques
youtu.be/DzEQNub33w4?si=ZKIuxcMGrLy3NFKY
They should of kept him from ever leaving New York
Padres got the best remaining value bat in the market
How did the guy not get a major league deal
“Not get a major League”…Scott Boras insists he was worth 3/$45M and this is what happens when you badly miscalculate and think that your agent sets the market
At first I just dismissed as being an extension of you being a political zealot
I’m starting to think it could quite possibly be something much larger…
Probably gets on once they figure out their roster moves
He’s just a dcent backup IFer who had an incredibly lucky 2024
and pro rate his SLG to normalize his slash line for luck and his .337/.381/.448 becomes something like 265/310/358 with flashy defense that’s a respectably above average by Statcast without being top-notch
and decline after 31 is notorious for accelerating
He’ll probably make some great-looking plays for you
If I’m a GM (or owner) looking for a back up Utility INF who’s essentially had one good year to go with 11 seasons of a sub 100 OPS+ while accumulating negative dWAR in 4 of the last 6 seasons……
I’d be more inclined to give a young prospect close to their MLB debut the chance to learn at the Big League Level…..for less money
Saying that… as a Mariners fan who is starving for any kind of improvement to our lineup
I’d be perfectly happy giving this guy a chance to back up Polo/D-Mo/ Bliss and Solano
Next free agent contest I’m just picking every SS to sign with San Diego
Last time he signed a minor league deal with San Diego
he almost assuredly has an opt out if he doesn’t make the team
finished preceding season on a major league roster)
he’ll have three uniform opt-outs in his minor league contract: five days prior to Opening Day
Looks like a mistake by both New York teams
Cashman better hope Cabrera or Peraza are ready
In 2023 Iglesias played just 28 games for Padres in the minors according to the article
in 2023 after opting out of a minor league deal with the Marlins
Iglesias signed a minor league deal with the Padres at the end of April
He played just 28 games in El Paso and then opted out
No other team would sign him and he missed the rest of the season
last year’s NL MVP according to Nick Castellanos
isn’t even valuable enough to get a major league contract
but having to settle for a minor league deal is kind of shocking
.337/.381/.448 batting line last season in 85 games
this comes off as one of those minor league deals with a guaranteed handshake roster spot
they’re just doing this for roster flexibility right now
“Shows how broke everyone is”…You mean it shows how middle market players should NEVER sign with Scott Boras and how badly things go when you(and your agent) badly miscalculate your market
Iglesias has signed 4 minor league deals in 3 years with 3 different agents
He is just not very good and at 35 he is old
why aren’t they selling their franchises
No pity for a situation their ownership/management created
What it shows is that FA is like musical chairs and when the music stops everybody scrambles for a chair…Iglesias wants to play and was willing to sign a MiL deal for the chance while some other guys refuse to lower their money / years demands….Brandon Belt last year
I would expect Iglesias to be up at some point and some of it depends on what happens with Wade
What it really shows is ANOTHER Boras failure
This has been the worst offseason for Boras clients that I can recall
but there are a number of guys that should strongly consider leaving the Boras agency
Pete Alonso only wanted to play for the Mets
It’s hard to get your client at big contract when they will only consider one team
He got Alonso the best possible deal with the one and only team he would sign with
Boras couldn’t drum up demand from another team
Boras wasn’t Alonso’s rep when the latter foolishly rejected Eppler=Cohen’s ridiculous 7/158m extension offer during the 2023 season
It wasn’t Boras who went into negotiations during the 2024-2025 offseason wanting more than that offer—it was Alonso who was instructing his agent to aim higher
Since you and your alter ego mlb fan are parroting the same message
I will cut and paste my answer to him as part of this post
He had no intention of signing anywhere else
No agent could have gotten Alonso a better contract because the Mets were the only team he would sign with
Your irrational hatred of Boras is causing you to make really stupid statements
This is his 4th straight minor league deal and 3rd straight season
He could not crack their MLB roster so he opted out and then signed a minor league deal with the Padres in late-April
After he couldn’t crack the Padres roster he opted out in late May and no other team signed him at all that year
Then he signed a minor league deal with the Mets last season and was called up in May
Its not a shock that he couldn’t get a MLB deal this offseason
No one believes he can repeat his 2024 performance
There is no guarantee that he can crack the Padres roster even as a backup
If Rosario can pull his head out and stop striking out so much
A waste of money and a player other players grow to hate quite quickly since he is all about himself
But if you think about it with the tax it would likely cost the Yanks like $7mm to sign him
I think Cabrera is overexposed as a starting player
but I’m not sure Iglesias is $7mm better than him
I remember when Padres fans were falling over themselves trying to trade Travis Jankowski for this guy
Instead they get him for a minor league deal and a spring training invite 🙂
They probably should have traded Jankowski at that point
He’s going to be playing quality defense and making more hit songs
How often does a player with 12 seasons in MLB
“”Ever happened before”…Without looking I can guarantee that it’s happened before
What this shows is that you cannot market middle market players the same as top of market players
Scott Boras learned an important lesson today
while Jose Iglesias pays the price for said lesson
Iglesias is not a middle of the market player
This is his third straight minor league deal
He is a bottom of the market player that just happened to have a magical 2024 after being signed to a minor league deal and being called up in May
The previous year he never made it out of the minors
The 2 years before that he had a combined 0.5 WAR
Iglesias has not ever been a middle market player
its his 4th straight minor league deal in 3 seasons
He signed 2 minor league contracts in 2023
One with the Marlins that he opted out of on April 20th and then with the Padres on April 25 that he opted out of one month later
After that no team would sign him at all in 2023
Boras doesn’t have time for his lesser clients
“Wait till last”…Boras doesn’t care about his lesser clients
They’re not going to line his pockets so he just gambles and plays Russian roulette with their free agency
If he wins he gets a few more bucks in his pocket
he feels it’s no great loss because that client is clearly no Juan Soto
This is his third straight minor league deal
I don’t think he played in the majors at all in 2023
It’s almost as if :luck is an alien concept to you lot
I think we all know his numbers last year are pretty unsustainable
but there is really no reason to believe he can’t hit .280 with an OPS around the.690-.715 mark (as he has for most of his career.) with solid defense at a middle infield spot
I’m surprised he couldn’t find a guaranteed deal somewhere
I’m sure Scott Boras being his agent doesn’t help because there are some teams that just won’t sign Boras clients
I would much rather have Iglesias over someone like Amed Rosario
Really bad karma for the Mets not bringing him back
“Mets MVP”…Iglesias had a higher W.A.R than most of the team outside of Lindor and maybe Vientos
How even an average agent couldn’t parlay that into 2/$14M or at worst a 1/$8M is criminal
Waiting this long(teams already exhausted their budgets)to sign is the worst case of agency malpractice I’ve ever seen
LMAO Pads Fans of all people talking about “alter ego accounts.”
Since you and your 2 alter ego accounts keep parroting the same garbage
I am going to cut and paste my response to you
also were only able to get him minor league deals
He didn’t even PLAY in the majors in 2023 because he was not a good player
He couldn’t even crack the MARLINS roster
Wow his market has been really terrible that he didn’t even get a guaranteed mlb deal after a 137 wrc+ season
his defense is declining and he doesn’t hit the ball very hard
Still a good chance that he makes the roster the padres lineup is pretty bad after the top4-5 guys and they don’t have depth
I don’t think you see him in SD unless there’s a Bogaerts injury or Rosario/Joe really underwhelms
I’d prefer Iglesias over Joe right now — the team can rotate Cronenworth/Arraez/Iglesias/Rosario between 2B/1B/LF/DH
It all depends if Rosario can play a passable LF
Just for fun (since I’m thinking of it)
I’m guessing LF/C/DH/bench goes as Hayward
with Iglesias coming up by 5/1 to replace Joe
I initially overlooked Wade; the Padres have a 2026 club option
I can’t imagine they keep him when they have better defensive options and better left-handed bats off the bench
There was an article in the UT about Wade on Monday that explains why he will stick as a Padre and why they signed him to a 2 year deal
sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/03/03/finally-able-t…
I think that because of Rosario’s continued issues with strike outs that the Padres signed Iglesias as insurance
If Rosario can strike out a reasonable amount the rest of camp
Iglesias doesn’t make the team and probably opts out
but right now he is striking out 30% in camp after striking out over 30% in his short trips to the majors
and I’m glad he’s able to contribute in his way
I’d love it if he wanted to stay in the organization as a coach
but given his comments about wishing to be a full-time player
About all he can offer at this point is pinch-running and roughly average defensive utility around the diamond
neither of which would be difficult to replace
Re: Rosario — I really hope the team doesn’t give up too early on him
His MLB + ST K% is a massive jump over his MiLB career numbers
and I don’t think that’s an issue with his approach
Seem to me like he’s just having some anxiety as the 26th man (or presumptive 26th man) on the roster and making poor swing decisions
I don’t think he’s going to be a can’t-miss player
but 6 years of IMO 1~2 win Rosario is a lot more valuable than a year of Joe/Iglesias or 2 years of Wade
I don’t envision that the Padres would be able to sneak him through waivers
you have to hit the ball hard or you are relegated to signing minor league deals every season like Iglesias
The Mets screwed up a layup here reminiscent of Dan Murphy
and he had a reasonable hand in the NYMs making the playoffs last year
It’s not far-fetched to see the Padres and Mets competing for the final playoff spot
My point is that Iglesias could be the difference between one team making the playoffs and the other missing out
Has someone told them Spring Training started last month
Scott coming off big years and where are they gonna go?….did I miss any
Always the Padres throwing stuff against wall and seeing what sticks
The hazards and risks of asking for too much money or years and signing well after spring training has already started
The Padres signed a 3.1 WAR player to a minor league deal
Makes sense that Joe Church would become a Padre
They always sign these older position players to minor league deals
He was a great Met for the short time he was here
I would have rather they traded McNeil and kept Iglesias for the year
The Mets needed the one spot open for the younger players which I understand
If the Mets needed the one spot open for the younger players why did they sign Nick Madrigal in the offseason for the same role who injured himself in the first ST inning and is now out for the Season
Iglesias wanted a major league contract to play with us
Hes signing with the Padres on a minors deal because he has a better chance to make the team through the ML deal
Madrigal was signed to be a stopgap for that last spot for a month so that the younger players could get consistent playing time in Triple A
Basically the 2024 version of Zack Short with worse defense but a better bat
Sounds like he’s the Met’s version of Jurickson Profar
Maybe he’ll follow up with a “bounce up” year (i.e
versus the “return to mean” that usually happens when a 4A ballplayer signs on after one good year
These signing are always pretty much a crap shoot any way
ought to remember what Preller’s operations team did with late signings last year
A few of them carried the team though much of the year
Most of them signed bigger contracts elsewhere
JP really figured things out over the last few seasons
I could see Iglesias playing the Donnie Barrels roll (with the bat) for the Friars- slap hitter who can be a slightly above replacement level INF with experience and an ability to play multiple INF positions
It was good to see Firecracker back in Padres camp yesterday
He was working out on the minor league side of camp in the morning
but joined the major league camp this morning
This is a sign that Rosario’s strike out issues may see him being DFA’d to start the season
so would have to be placed on waivers to be outrighted to the minors
For those that had been trying to say that the Padres absolutely had to cut payroll or were under payroll constraints
if Iglesias makes the major league squad his contract puts the Padres over the 2nd CBT threshold
Correct me if I am in fact wrong but pretty sure the second CBT threshold only means a larger overage tax
They’re not going to be able to duck the first threshold without gutting the team so at this point I’d just try to stay below the 3rd threshold (the one that lowers your first rounder)
Correct. mlb.com/glossary/transactions/competitive-balance-…
people who you’ve never met having to pay more in overages shouldn’t mean anything to you as a Padres fan
Having your first rounder lowered 10 spots should though
he made last summer a lot of fun as a Mets fan
gotta think AJ is still talking to clubs about trading Xander and/or Jakes contracts
Not to mention all the pitching hes signed… Gotta think at least one trade is coming in the spring
but I have no problem with him as our starter at short
Still hoping Tirso is our LFer opening day
Why play McCoy at short when Iglesias could play there and provide excellent defense and an above average bat
I could see them moving Croney if there are any takers
I’d thing Iglesias steps in at 2nd or short
“Impressive as Iglesias’ numbers were in 2024” is NOT PROPER ENGLISH
You can’t just leave “as” out to begin the sentence
Grammar is not optional when you’re being paid to write

2025 | 00:06:29add-reel-58566Reelsshare-square-2-58567ShareMLB Tonight breaks down the news that Jose Iglesias has signed a one-year Minor League deal with the Padres
By Anthony Franco | February 24
The Mets’ infield depth took a hit yesterday, as Nick Madrigal suffered a fracture in his left shoulder
That’ll rule the former fourth overall pick out for quite some time and leaves the club in need of a utility infielder
While it was fair to wonder if the Madrigal injury changed the thought process
they’d face the same roster inflexibility that deterred them from a reunion in the first place
Stearns pointed to a desire to have someone with minor league options taking the final bench spot
a player with well over five years of service time
cannot be sent to the minors without his approval
He’s 85 days away from crossing the five-year service threshold himself and will add to that tally while he’s on the major league injured list
If he spends the first three months of the season on the IL
the Mets could no longer option him either
the backup infielder is the only spot where the Mets can shuffle through position players unless they went to a 12-man pitching staff
Iglesias was an excellent find for New York last year on a minor league deal
The Mets selected his contract at the end of May
The veteran shortstop hit .337/.381/.448 across 291 plate appearances while emerging as a clubhouse and fan favorite
but his offensive approach (plenty of contact with minimal power and almost no walks) isn’t held in high esteem by most of today’s front offices
Teams surely do not expect him to repeat last year’s huge production
which came behind a .382 average on balls in play that is nearly 70 points higher than his career mark
but they’re among the organization’s more talented young hitters
It’s probably preferable for them to play regularly at Triple-A Syracuse than to get scattered big league reps
(Mauricio might open the season on the IL as he finishes his rehab from 2023 ACL surgery.)
meaning the Mets couldn’t send him back down without putting him on waivers if they call him up at any point
an offseason waiver claim whom the Mets outrighted off the 40-man as the corresponding move for the Madrigal signing
New York Mets Jose Iglesias
Carry – He got a $92K car as a gift just for giving up his number …
Sucks as a player what does Soto giving him a car have to do with performance
Fever: I heard someone got a massively expensive truck for giving up his number
avenger – Not really expensive when you consider Ohtani gave Joe Kelly’s wife a $100K-$200K Porsche Panamera for his #17
cr – Sucky players don’t typically get low numbers in the majors
Just the fact he was in a position to give a low number to Soto means he did something right
And now Baty has a single digit number …
were excited about small sample sizes like spring training stats
it could be completely different: Vientos could be in Syracuse
We all know that spring training literally never correlates to big league success because there can be guys like baty where they look incredible but once they start facing pitchers on normal effort then they do nothing
So many people ready to give up on a great prospect who doesn’t even have a full seasons worth of ABs and only 80 games in AAA
I can’t think of an example where a prospect starts hitting randomly after struggling for so long
He had an ok season and now with the braves is kind of meh
Vientos and Mike trout had 1 bad season and then became great
Do you even like baseball or do you just like complaining
these comment sections are infested with people who are either drunk or 14 years old–hopefully not both
Oh look at us we can pay 700 mil for one player but can’t even dish out 2-4 mil for a player who helped our team immensely this past year
and we can’t spend a few million on starting pitchers that will actually help the team
Nope instead we will sign montas who as usual stays injured
we will sign clay Holmes a pretty good closer to become a starting pitcher again after years and years of being nothing but a bullpen arm and when our players get injured we won’t replace them
but this seems like very crappy roster construction
especially for a team who has world series aspirations…
How does overpaying a couple more 30+ year old players help the Mets
Just cause they got Soto doesn’t mean they have to spend a billion + this offseason
They can piece together over the years or over the season as they go
Montas and Manaea should be back by early/mid may they can survive a month without
If they sink that far then another pitcher is not gonna help much
They aren’t aces so they should be able to have a couple replacement starters to help get thru that period
And also what happens when other players get injured toward the end of spring training
Then you’ll have to dig into minor league depth that might not help at all
or prospects that might not be ready when you could have just signed the players who you know can help right away
but by then they will have not had a spring training to ramp up so it’d be useless to sign them
They have a couple guys that can fill in while they are on the DL in Butto
Canning and Blackburn not to mention Sproat in the minors if they really get desperate
Braves every year without fail dip into the minors for pitching help and they are a develop and extend organization that doesn’t just go out and sign free agents
So why be sour on DS doing in NY what AA has done in Atlanta for years
They jumped at a generational player in Soto
but have added prospects in trades and are committed to development
Braves_saints_celtics you sound more like a disgruntled Mets fan in disguise than a Braves fan,,
I am a braves fan lmao born and raised in Alabama so watching braves on tbs growing up was all I had
But I will say that I am a BASEBALL fan and I like good competition and good baseball whether the braves are playing or not…
You almost sound like a true Wilpon-era Met fan
You seem like a casual fan if you think the Mets need to panick sign from the scrap heap that’s left in FA
Panic signing is not signing players who were literally on the roster 5 months ago and produced at a very high level
Iglesias is 35 and wanted a multi year deal
Even at 5MM he would cost the Mets around 11MM total with the penalties
but the mets signing Soto they should have put a better rotation
and a better bench around him that’s just my take
guess that’s why I’m not a gm huh
The Wilponzies wouldn’t go anywhere near Soto and his asking price lol
Why pay for the player when we have three young talented players that play the same positions that need their shots
Prospects don’t always work out though
I’m not championing for all sorts of different players the mets should sign
And if he struggles let him go for one of the young bucks…
They don’t always work out but at some point you have to trust your talent evaluation and go with some youth
They work out a lot more than people let on
Strider or Albies shots because there was always some decent major league player the Braves could’ve signed every year
they are two totally different organizations in the way they’ve run the past few years
I guess I expect the mets to sign players more than the braves do and the braves to lean on prospects more than the mets do
Either way it’s gonna be fun this year
Should be a fun year for all of us with plenty of high end games to watch
Iglesias was remarkably productive last year and exceeded all expectations
You really can’t go wrong bringing him back
We’re in a much different timeline these days
Sounds like Jose was a distraction with his ‘smash hit’ song
“All the teams I’ve loved before”
JDM sucked last year so that’s no great loss
Iglesias is never repeating what he did last year so it makes sense the Mets don’t want to pay him
His salary would effectively be taxed 110% as well and it reduces roster flexibility
He looks like a platoon DH ‘bat only’ for some team
I’ll add that Iglesias was a non-roster invite last year
And JD Martinez was signed at the very end of camp and came up near Memorial Day
But agreed – time for a kid to step up
Madrigal going down is absolutely cause for panic city
It looks like the Mets need to work hard and get Marte traded to open up another flexible roster spot so they can sign Candelera
Even if they traded Marte it would just be roster spots for Acuna and Baty
Stearns wants the position open to up and coming players
Iglesias is a good player who will find somewhere to go
Considering there’s only one up and coming player who rates to be ready to play in MLB as of Opening Day
Stearns must have a fairly high opinion of Acuna
at least in the backup role—-which I suppose doesn’t bode well for his long-term future
if he’s not good enough to warrant grooming in AAA for a full time role and considering the low cost of adding Iglesias in the interim
The pitching staff has no stars but lots and lots of average major league arms
That may not sound great but in fact it’s the right way to build a staff since loads of pitchers will inevitably get hurt
If they’re all essentially interchangeable a team can stay afloat
especially if it has one of the best lineups in the sport
Senga was a star in 2023 but after essentially missing the entire season last year
If he’s a solid mid-rotation type who takes the ball 25 times
I’m not sure the Mets really want to gamble on a 35 yer old who just had his best WAR ever
and will be going year to year from this point forward
Iglesias gave great value last yea–but cam’t really be expected to repeat
The roster sitch also means Acuna doesn’t get any MLB reps until someone gets hurt
If Acuna is now the top backup IFer on the Depth Chart
and since Baty can’t play SS and probably shouldn’t play 2B at the MLB level until he’s had more time there in the minors
who do we think is behind Acuna on the Depth Chart for backup IFers
I remember when people were saying the White Sox couldn’t decline Craig Kimbrel’s option because they just gave up Nick Madrigal for him
Anytime I have watched Iglesias play the team has loved him
Iglesias has a lifetime .283 batting average
and was a huge part of The Mets 2024 success
What exactly has he done to tick off the Mets Front Office
He wont cost much (Although I don’t know his asking price) and is every bit as good as everyone else the have brought in
He must’ve done something cause this makes no sense
Never understood why Jose Iglesias keeps getting minor contracts and teams say he can’t hit
By Mark Polishuk | March 23
Iglesias and Gurriel are both Article XX(b) free agents
and thus yesterday was the first opt-out date on their minor league deals
It isn’t known if Iglesias or Gurriel actually enacted their opt-out clauses to force the Padres’ hand
the two infielders will now be part of San Diego’s roster when the season begins on Thursday
Iglesias only signed with the Padres on March 5
and the $3MM salary attached to his minors deal if he made the roster seemingly hinted that the team was always aiming to include him in a backup infield role
Making the team officially locks in that salary
as Iglesias looks to have an encore to possibly the most remarkable season of his 12 years in the Show
Signed to a minors deal by the Mets last winter, Iglesias was called up to the team in late May and proceeded to hit .337/.381/.448 over 291 plate appearances — far outpacing the career .277/.319/.382 slash line he’d produced in his previous 4043 PA. A .382 BABIP played a hefty role in Iglesias’ career year, yet BABIP wasn’t as important an acronym as OMG
Iglesias’ song that became an instant hit with New York fans and became symbolic of the Mets’ turn-around season
Gurriel will earn a $1.35MM salary for making the team as the 40-year-old prepares for his 10th big league season
A winner of two World Series rings during his time in Houston
Gurriel has hit only .243/.297/.356 in 978 PA for the Astros
He hit well enough in the Padres’ camp
and the latter two players are left-handed hitters
That could provide an opening for the right-handed hitting Iglesias and Gurriel to grab some at-bats when a southpaw is on the mound
plus Gurriel could also split some DH time with Sheets (another lefty swinger)
The 38-year-old Maldonado also had an opt-out in his deal, and he’ll forego exercising that clause now that he has been tabbed as the Padres’ backup catcher behind Elias Diaz
Maldonado has long been highly regarded for his defense and ability to work with pitchers
even as his offense has rarely even been average over his 14-year career
Maldonado has a .203/.278/.344 slash line over 3449 career PA
and last season saw him crater out by hitting .119/.174/.230 in 147 PA with the White Sox
Obviously San Diego is prioritizing glovework over anything Maldonado can or can’t produce at the plate. It might also be a sign of how Luis Campusano’s stock has fallen
as the former top prospect struggled through a rough 2024 season and now looks to be starting 2025 in the minors
San Diego Padres Jose Iglesias Martin Maldonado Yuli Gurriel
A major league team rostering Maldonado and Gurriel in 2025 because the owner gives them a dentist toy chest budget
They could have signed Higgy for what they gave Iglesias
The Padres have a $260 million CBT payroll
Because all those awful extensions are starting to kick in
What payroll did they add besides this parade of minor league signings
Not many teams can tax dodge like the dodgers
Wish we could but unfortunately not every team can
And not many teams can afford to constantly pay luxury taxes
Without those extensions all they would have done is backfilled the holes left by all their good players leaving
They didn’t have a single major league signing until Heyward and Joe in January and you are pretending they spent because Tatis and Cronenworth are starting to get paybumps lmao
those huge deals will force the Padres to continue to choose between aging vets and rookies when filling out the roster
the Padres may not have the budget to fix the team on the fly
The Padres tried to match the heroic Dodgers
their pitiful owner couldn’t go the distance
and not it’s a team of old has-beens and never-will-be’s
with a team mortgage half the size of the national debt
because that might ruin their message or reveal their hurt feeling’s …
It counts as spending but it doesn’t improve the team as their window is closing
Jose was always making the team and provides good infield depth
Gonzalez had the best spring out of those guys
Campy’s had 10x the opportunities at most other minor leaguers have had
and hasn’t been able to turn the corner for whatever reason
he’s EARNED those opportunities via 5 or 6 minor league seasons – no one faults him on his work ethic or talent
and the catcher position (as I’m sure you know Simm)
is perhaps the toughest position to master
He’s gonna get another chance to prove himself in AAA
address what the Padres have repeatedly cited as his weaknesses
and perhaps end up finishing the season with the big club
The Pads organization is so thin at catching that they’re running out Vet retreads from other organizations
so I can’t image them trading Campusano away
unless some organization really values him and offers an overpay of come combination
I’ve never heard anything bad about him
I feel for him seeing his life’s dream failing
but he’s a $millionaire twice over and young
Manny wants some old guys around to make him feel younger
A team hoping a defensive first back up catcher can hold a back up position and a career .275/.330/.453 hitter against lefties can be a platoon bat at 1B and DH against lefties
Dodgers are doing something similar taking a chance on 38 year Luis Garcia to give them innings out of the bullpen
Doing it with bullpen arms is a lot different than washed position players
What purpose does old Gurriel do on a team with three 1B already exactly
I don’t know what they see in Gurriel
His OPS+ hasn’t been above 85 since 2021
You’re doing it with Austin Barnes as a backup catcher lmao don’t even know your own roster fair weather fans like amk are a joke and disgrace to the dodgers fan base
Joe can play OF and platoon as a RH bat in LF
Do we need to write an L on your left hand and R on your right hand amk
You’re confused why they’d carry guys who can form platoons at 1B
Majority of teams utilize platoon situations
Cause all you do is just prove your own ignorance time and time again and instead of talking baseball we just spend time correcting you being constantly wrong
With Joe/sheets/gurriel giving Arraez a day off once in a while
Amk is Turkish slang for constantly feeling frustrated
Like how Americans say the F word when upset
So guess they’re constantly feeling frustrated
All you do is ramble and make up things to say “fair weather fan”
Austin Barnes has been the Dodgers backup catcher for 10 years
This has nothing to do with Padres dumpster diving
What next the Dodgers signed David Bote so that means they will have the same record as San Diego next year
Let’s see what weird dots you try to connect
I look forward to see what Cease and King will do throwing to that guy
Probably throw a lot of passed balls to a catcher that hits .150
Look at the games they threw to him in spring training for your answer
Maldonado making the team is not a good sign
Maldonado making the team just says they want a defensive backup
Which is fine as they don’t need a ton of offense from that spot
Yuli is definitely the biggest question mark
If he doesn’t hit well he will be released and Tirso will get his shot
Simm: Maldonado isn’t that good defensively anymore
I’m sure he is better than campy at defense
To be fair I’m pretty shocked he made the team
As an Astro fan I watched his defensive regression
He was pretty close to terrible his final year with them
I doubt he’s gotten better as he’s gotten older
I’m not saying you’re wrong but campy has been extremely bad on defense
It’s possible they even call up Salas later in the year if he performs well in the minors
Will see if any of these vets can hold it down for this season
Imagine being teammates with a guy who made racist taunts after cheating against you
Imagine caring about it more than the actual recipient of the taunts
Padres will have to DFA both Wade and Rosario to do this
Haven’t they learned their lessen on 40 year old DH
Heyward has shown he can’t hit his way out of a wet paper bag
but he will make the squad instead of Ornelas or Joe
They’re severely lacking in OF depth
and he can still play an alright corner and has been league-average or better against righties the past two years
Tirso will tear it up in AAA and get the call soon
Who would you honestly rather have as the 4th OF
He had one of the best springs of all the guys and he will be in El Paso
Why are the Padres giving a half dozen of them away early in the season for this garbage
Why are they killing the team’s depth by losing 3 players to DFA for these guys
I’m guessing Heyward got the nod because of the guaranteed money + platoon vet presence… I don’t love it
there are too many righties among their standout performers this ST: Lockridge
But I definitely wouldn’t sacrifice Rosario for a 41-year-old Gurriel; that’s an asinine move even if Rosario never moves the needle at the ML level
Padres announced this morning that the final position roster spot goes to Lockridge
Joe will be able to take Gurriel’s spot soon
and they can figure something out for backup C
The difference between Heyward’s $1 million and major league minimum is $240K this year
I hate that the Padres are sacrificing those two for a 40 year old and a useless 35 year old 5th OF
but the difference between rostering Heyward and rostering a pre-arb player on the 26-man is $1.75M vs $1M given the guaranteed salary
Not saying that should get in the way of fielding the best team
they’re fine with DFAing Wade’s guaranteed money
@Pads If it was possible I’d have angry face emoji on my post
Sheets has hit well (15 for 36 – a .416 BA) against guys that are minor league pitchers
but has gone 1 for 17 with 3 BB this spring against pitchers with MLB experience
Iglesias went 5 for 25 with 0 BB and only 1 ball making it out of the infield
His salary pushes the Padres over the 2nd CBT threshold and costs them $5 million
He will be playing for another team in a few days
I don’t expect Iglesias to replicate anything near 2024
but SS depth is pretty thin after Bogaerts
If Iglesias keeps McCoy in AAA I think it’s a positive move
but I don’t mind a roll of the dice on a lefty 1B/DH type… Padres don’t have a ton of power-stroke in their lineup
I would’ve gone with Heyward Iglesias Rosario Sheets and Campusano/Sullivan
too; even though I was very lukewarm on the signing at the time
The other players were a bit of a dice roll
Wade and McCoy are both better defensively and Iglesias has shown this spring what he has left in the tank
He hit exactly one ball out of the infield
2 of his 5 hits were full swing dribblers that barely made it to the pitcher
but I’m fine with taking a chance on him over either of these guys (knowing full well that he’s not hitting anywhere close to last year)
My only issue with the bench is Yuli being a complete zero with the bat and glove and jettisoning Rosario to make room
which I absolutely hate) I can understand to varying degrees
“What the numbers say is what you are” – Bill Belichick
Writing was on the wall when they signed Iglesias and Gurriel and brought them into camp.
Pads now have the most veteran bench (read; slowest and oldest bench) in MLB
I hope Eguy gets his chance somewhere else and rakes out a fine MLB career
he’s not the AAAA player the Pads think he is
Yeah it was over for him the minute they signed Jose in my opinion
For whatever reason the padres didn’t have much faith in him and Tirso
They look to be going with experience over speed and youth
I thought Wade was out of options and he’s gone unless he clears waivers and they bring him back
Brew- ease is out of options but he may clear waivers
Pads just announced that Lockridge given the last roster spot
And before the season starts two AAA guys brought up to the starting rotation
After the first four in the order pass through
drop off to Bogaerts and Cronenworth both approaching Heyward status and then a black hole after them
wont miss any Padres action for a couple of innings when I head to the concessions
just told my buddy every 7-9 at-bats will be an auto-skip early in the year
I thought the judge blocked John Seidler from being control person
I’m bummed Eguy isn’t getting sn opportunity
Honestly I thought he had a little J-Ram in him
I’m really surprised they went with Yuli over him considering one guy is 40 and hasn’t been good in years and the other is out of options
Those two decisions could backfire quickly
Only Iglesias had ability to opt out and he would have had to take that option earlier in the week
There is no excuse for losing Rosario and Wade
Loved Iggy in Cincinnati and have always been a big fan
Gurriel is like will smith since he seems to be the missing piece that helps teams get to the playoffs that are on the cusp
so maybe it helps the padres at least get there
I like Heyward and Iglesias making the team
which is on paper 2025’s Peralta and HSK
but I can kinda see the decision to let Campusano try and refocus on his development
I would’ve just given the backup spot to Sullivan if they didn’t want to relegate Campusano to #2 C
I was really hoping the Padres could even grab someone like Maile… C is gonna suck this year
Both Joe and Rosario have recently shown they can outperform him offensively at the MLB level and offer more defensive flexibility
They’re going to lose an intriguing depth piece in Rosario if they don’t roster him
Bewildering signing and the 7-9 spot is looking excruciating to open the year
My only hope is that the vets will have very short leashes
The vets will start the season and have short leashes
Joe and Campy will play every day and eventually get their time
I like Rosario and think losing him may be short sighted Isn’t the idea with Gurriel for veteran late game at bats
It seems there is very little to lose here if this doesn’t work because you can change it out pretty cost effectively
I’m not worried about finding a replacement for Gurriel if he struggles
but having to constantly tinker at the edges of the roster because the FO refuses to give bench spots to their young and cheap talent is tiresome
They just turned over their entire bench from last year and LF + C because everyone (save Peralta
I would think this would be top-of-mind for the club because the payroll constraints are not going to get any easier as Machado and Bogaerts eat up significant payroll space in their mid-30s
The Padres will LOSE the two guys that could replace those old bleeps on waivers
When Gurriel has to hit MLB pitching and returns to the sorry bleep he has been for the last few years
We are stuck with Gurriel or worse all season
I guess I see it as Lockridge replaces Wade’s speed and Iglesias replaces his defense with higher upside at the plate
I like Rosario but he didn’t hit enough this Spring to impress I guess
Joe could replace Gurriel at DH and first if he truly is washed up
At this time last year you could say all the negatives about Gurriel as you could about Profar- no one saw that coming
Like it or not the Padres are set up to just pay their core guys and tinker around the edges on the bench
This could be a Carpenter / Cruz or Solano/ Peralta situation,we’ll find out
no one saw Profar’s All-Star season coming
It didn’t hurt that he had some history of success with the team
The best I can say for Gurriel is I’ll be genuinely surprised if he’s at least league-average with the bat—something Rosario and Joe already are while offering more defensive versatility
If this means DFA for Rosario because he is out of options then I don’t love it
Way more upside/control with him compared to Yuli
Hopefully they have a trade or something in the works and don’t lose him for nothing
He should pass through waivers and head to el paso
Gurriel over Rosario and Joe makes no damn sense
Wade showed he is a MLB caliber player last season
Do you know who else showed this spring that he has absolutely nothing left
Wade had nearly a -1 WAR and an OPS+ of 50 last year
but you can’t even spot-start him in 2025
but still has more offensive and defensive upside as an occasional starter in the infield
Lockridge will get first crack at LF platoon
and I don’t think Heyward has a very long leash
thought neither are looking great but is definitely a choice vs keeping gurriel
Hard to roll when you have 40 year old guys that have the same spring speed as an injured turtle on the roster
I don’t see why anyone else should be concerned about it
There’s nothing wrong with having Asian eyes and there’s nothing wrong with describing them
and said he has nothing but respect for Japanese pitchers
What a crock to keep throwing this up on him
He played in Japan but didn’t ingratiate himself enough into that culture to understand that it’s a taboo
It’s more of an intelligence/character issue from that kind of behavior
What’s with Preller and geriatric roadkill
Another run at the Carpenter and Nelson Cruz approach to cheap contracts
Not only these three but the equally futile Jason Heyward
Sending Luis Campusano—a former top prospect with a .225/.274/.355 MLB line over 541 PA—to the minors signals a hidden truth: teams overvalue unproven upside when proven floors are available cheaper
Reading these comments are a particularly large amount of fun
If only someone could have mic’d up AJ Preller’s meeting room over the past week
and AJP are gonna be having the same kind of conversations
there are about 10 guys who have had great springs
all of who could potentially contribute to winning baseball
and who will become this years Nelson Cruz/Matt Carpenter black holes
It’s not like there’s that much riding on these roster decisions
For every critical and dismissive remark on this thread about players or the roster decisions
remember that absolutely NO ONE (except maybe Tati) predicted Profar’s 2024 breakout (or maybe flash-in-the-pan – time will tell) season
No one here is any wiser this year about these decisions
Winning in April is the only way anyone will know where the 2025 his headed
I fear the pretty-much Spring-Training proven non-hitters added to the roster
That’s because because like most Padre fans
I almost take defense for granted at this point
because of the position-player stars on this team are THAT good
I don’t know if I can handle a Hedges-style automatic out every nine hitters
That gulf between the seventh hitter and lead off hitter can feel like an eternity
without at least SOME bunting & speed ability to at least reset the lineup
It’s like movie night 1980 all over again where a few folks go to the video rental store to pick a movie but can’t agree because the selection is too vast
Has anyone seen or heard anything about the Rule 5 (i.e
from Baltimore) pitcher Juan Nuñez this Spring
I can’t find a single article about him
other than maybe a footnote that he’s in S.T
but maybe my internet search skill have failed me
sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/03/23/gurriel-iglesi…
“Reliever Alek Jacob has made the club
which leaves the Padres needing to fill one more spot in the eight-man bullpen
The decision probably comes down to Logan Gillaspie
(Shildt and others have repeatedly said the team does not plan to make the starting pitcher who doesn’t make the rotation into a long man in the bullpen.)”
Have seen him in the box score about 3 times
relieved Cease in his last outing and went 1
it is possible Eguy Rosario could still get the last bench roster spot
it does not sound like the Pads are leaning that way
corner outfield spots) give the Padres coverage at all the positions and provide the ability to pinch hit at the bottom of the order
What they don’t necessarily provide is an exceptional defensive replacement for left fielder Jason Heyward when the Padres are trying to protect a slim lead late
who has hit .364 (16-for-44) and possibly Joe
who has hit .316 (12-for-38) with a .469 on-base percentage
even though Rosario played some left field and Wade started at least one game at all three outfield spots last season.”
The article goes on to say keeping an out-of-options “promising and versatile” guy on the roster like Rosario solely to prevent losing him to waivers just can’t be a consideration like it was in previous seasons
It is solely about what the brain trust believes most helps the team win now
It’s hard to square how the team would sacrifice a potential longterm utility piece with a win-now mentality when they carried a Rule 5 guy last year
So reputation and seniority are more important than talent and production now
I’m not a fan of keeping Yuli and Maldo and losing Eguy
you can’t really call what Eguy and a few others being sent down have done at MLb level “talent and production”
It’s more accurate to say past proven talent and production in an aging declining player v potential talent and potential production as potential development occurs
These guys are supposed to be prospect talent evaluators as much as anything so
Eguy Rosario is going to be DFA’d eventually
My comment was referring more to guys like Tirso Ornalas and Oscar Gonzalez
But you cannot convince me we are better with Yuli and Heyward on the team than those dudes
I believe both Tirso and Oscar can be sent down to AAA to be stashed and at least for Tirso
he needs to play everyday to continue developing
Oscar – I like as 4th OF for sure but
he isn’t a DH candidate as much as Yuli so
these 2 guys aren’t costing much to give 30 games to see what they (and the AAA guys) do
SD is highly unlikely to challenge for division so
30 games or so shouldn’t affect outcome at end of Sept
I think the convincing you part is just like everyone else – just going to have to wait and see how it plays out
One or both will be released if they aren’t performing
trying to recreate Peralta and Solano with 2 guys that have been there / done that
Gonzalez also uses the Spongebob theme song as his walk-up music so maybe that could be the Padres’ version of what “Baby Shark” was for the 2019 Nationals
Finally the Padres name fits their average age…
Guys I reported the Yuli Gurriel call up 25 minutes before Francys (2:10p ET)
actually Francys gave credit on a second tweet:

Photo of Padres pitchers stretchingThe Padres added another candidate to their infield mix Wednesday morning when they signed Major League veteran Jose Iglesias to a minor league contract.
“We’re excited to have him,” said Padres’ manager Mike Shildt. “He’s aboard and gets in later tonight. He’s a proven guy in the league who plays multiple positions. He’s been an important part of a lot of clubs’ success. He’s a winning player and a very accomplished guy. We’re excited to have him come in here and compete for a job.”
“Iglesias can play second, third and short very well. This guy is a proven defender no matter where you put him. I didn’t see him when he was here in 2023. I saw him across the field when he was with the Reds and Mets. He was a huge part of the Mets’ success relative to his performance on the field, not only how he paid but how he went about it.”
Shildt on the competition for roster spots and how Iglesias fits in: “Everything is on the table. We have a competitive camp. We add to it with Iglesias. Eguy Rosario has already moved around on the field — second, third and left field. He played short last year a little bit. A.J. (Preller) brought Jose in to compete for a spot on the job. And that’s what we’re here for.”
Shildt discussed the scheduled playing time for regular position players this spring:
“You’ve seen the position players pretty much on par with what you saw them last spring at this point,” said Shildt. “They’re getting their work in. It’s a balancing act with all our players. With the regulars, we want to build them up. It’s a long season. When we start the season, we want guys to feel fresh and ready to go.”
“The good news is that we have a lot of veteran players who know what that looks like for them. We partner with them on their schedules to get them built up with the number of at-bats and innings they need under them. We still have 19 more days of spring.”
“It’s also a balancing act to create opportunities for other guys. They need to play. But we have only one game a day. There are only so many innings and at-bats to go. We have to get guys ready and evaluate other guys. It’s a balancing act for all of that.”
Shildt then turned to the rotation which has four apparent set starters in Dylan Cease, Yu Darvish, Michael King and Nick Pivetta and a five-way battle for the last spot.
Photo of Nick Pivetta running out to the mound at the Peoria Sports Complex“We’re just getting ready for the season,” said Shildt. “There’s still time for these guys to work. We’re not there yet. We’re getting to the point where we’re starting to see all those guys on the main field and get them built up. You might see as we go along a guy grab a simulated game on a back field. These guys are ramping up.”
He then discussed Pivetta and Matt Waldron who worked Tuesday in a split-squad doubleheader:
Shildt on Pivetta: “I heard and saw a guy who was sharp … four punch outs. All the reports were very favorable. He threw the ball well and wanted to go out and grab the start of the third inning and get built up a little bit. Everything was really positive for Nick yesterday. That’s exciting.”
Shildt on Waldron: “I thought Matt performed better than his line Tuesday. He was good. We didn’t help him out defensively. I thought he was effective and I didn’t see him getting squared up a lot. He was mostly consistent. I thought he handled himself well.”
Shildt on Yu Darvish: “Darvish’s first start is coming up, likely in a couple days.”
Shildt on center fielder Brandon Lockridge: “We’ll give him some work in left. We’ve got a lot of different players and only so many spots that you can play in a game. He’s doing a great job. He’s a threat on the bases. He’s taking great at-bats. He plays a good center field. We’ll continue to get him some opportunities in games. He’s getting plenty of early work in the morning sessions in different positions. He’s doing a nice job.”

Jose Iglesias came up in late May to a New York Mets team that was reeling
1 hit song on the Latin charts in 'OMG' and the rest is history
But now, the Candelita Mets era is also history. The 35-year-old infielder has agreed to a deal with the San Diego Padres, according to Robert Murray of FanSided; the deal is reportedly a minor league contract with a MLB camp invite
Iglesias will get $3 million if in the majors plus $1 million in potential incentives
according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post
Jose Iglesias is headed to the Padres on a minors deal with MLB camp invite @ByRobertMurray & @JonHeyman were on it
and 26 RBI over 85 games for the Mets in 2024
playing mostly second base over an injured and struggling Jeff McNeil
hitting .375 with RISP and driving in 23 runs
Read More: OMG: Jose Iglesias Mets era is over, per David Stearns
and Mets is now heading to the NL West to a Padres team expected to compete along with New York for a spot in the NL Wild Card race
Iglesias gets $3M if in majors plus $1M incentives on Padres deal
The Mets opted to move on from Iglesias, pointing to all the young players they have coming to the infield
New York currently has Jeff McNeil at second base and Mark Vientos at third
and Ronny Mauricio also have the ability to play both positions
They felt that bringing Iglesias back would prevent those guys from getting much playing time
Iglesias put 'OMG' out in June and then the 'OMG remix' out in October to capture the hearts of Mets fans
he heads out west and if he can find his way on the Padres roster like he did with the Mets
maybe Candelita has an encore performance in him to carry San Diego to the postseason
Betting and gambling content is intended for individuals 21+ and is based on individual commentators' opinions and not that of Sports Illustrated or its affiliates
The San Diego Padres added to their infield depth Wednesday
agreeing to a minor-league contract with veteran Jose Iglesias
The deal includes an invitation to the team’s big-league camp
Iglesias, 35, put together one of the best seasons of his career in 2024 after not appearing in the big leagues the previous year. After signing a minor-league deal with the New York Mets, he resurfaced in the majors in May, hit .337/.381/.448 in 85 games and became a fan favorite whose “OMG” song served as a team rallying cry
“We’re excited to have him,” Padres manager Mike Shildt said
“Talking to some people that observed (the 2024 Mets)
he was a huge part of that team’s success.”
The Padres will hope for similar results from Iglesias
who spent part of the 2023 season with San Diego’s Triple-A club
Iglesias joins fellow veterans Yuli Gurriel
Gavin Sheets and Mike Brosseau as non-roster infielders who are competing for a bench job
could make the team in a role that sees him split time between the infield and left field
With a career slash line of .283/.323/.386
Iglesias ostensibly remains a strong contact hitter as well as a versatile defender
he primarily split his time last season between second base and third base
He also benefited from a likely unsustainable .382 batting average on balls in play
although his expected average (.285) still indicated a solid approach
The Padres will owe Iglesias a $3 million base salary if he’s on the big-league roster

Pete Alonso and the New York Mets finalized their $54 million
two-year contract Wednesday as spring training opened in Florida with the team's first formal workout for pitchers and catchers
New York also re-signed injured reliever Drew Smith to a one-year deal with a club option for 2026
Smith is expected to miss all or most of the upcoming season while recovering from his second Tommy John surgery
but the right-hander should be ready for 2026
One player unlikely to return is Jose Iglesias
according to Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns
Alonso and the Mets agreed to financial terms last week
The four-time All-Star first baseman gets a $10 million signing bonus and salaries of $20 million this year and $24 million in 2026
He can opt out after the 2025 season to become a free agent again
"We're excited to welcome Pete back to Queens," Mets owners Steve and Alex Cohen said in a news release
"He is a homegrown talent who is adored by our fanbase."
Alonso has spent his entire professional career with the Mets organization and ranks third in franchise annals with 226 home runs
trailing David Wright (242) and Darryl Strawberry (252)
The slugger leads the majors with 586 RBIs since his debut in 2019, and only New York Yankees star Aaron Judge has more home runs (232)
is the lone player in Mets history with five seasons of at least 30 home runs
he was one of just four players in the majors to play in 162 regular-season games
"Pete is a great Met and one of the league's elite power threats," Stearns said
"I'm thrilled that we reached an agreement
and I'm looking forward to watching Pete help anchor our lineup."
Alonso will get a $200,000 bonus for winning an MVP award
$150,000 for finishing second and $50,000 for third
$100,000 for National League Championship Series MVP and $100,000 each for a Gold Glove
making the All-Star team or earning a spot on the first or second All-MLB team
Alonso batted .240 with 34 homers, 88 RBIs and a career-worst .788 OPS last season. He struck out 172 times but played in every game, helping the Mets reach the NLCS. His three-run, ninth-inning homer off closer Devin Williams lifted the Mets over Milwaukee in the decisive third game of their wild card series
when he hit .260 with a major league-high 53 homers -- a rookie record -- and 120 RBIs
The 31-year-old Smith was 1-1 with a 3.06 ERA and two saves in 19 appearances last year before having elbow surgery in July
He has spent his entire big-league career with the Mets
going 12-13 with a 3.48 ERA and five saves in six seasons
Smith and right-hander Christian Scott were placed on the 60-day injured list Wednesday
Scott also is recovering from Tommy John surgery and is not expected back until 2026
sparked the Mets on and off the field last year
but Stearns said the team plans to evaluate some of its younger infielders this spring instead
it's important for us to keep some avenues open for our younger players," he told reporters
"We think it's important for us to have some roster flexibility with that spot."
