the one that erupted in Palermo over the denunciation by Lipu Italian League for the Protection of Birds of an abusive party that was taking place last Saturday in the Isola delle Femmine Nature Reserve The party would have been that of two twin brothers from Palermo who are used to having non-trivial parties (in villas and sought-after places: last year at Fiumara d’arte in the province of Messina) to celebrate their double genetliac on June 29 This year for June 29 they were on the Isola delle Femmine with about 80 guests from ’Palermo bene,’ when to interrupt music and dancing (complete with sound system/lights what to drink and eat) came the Coast Guard Carabinieri and Police (a dozen patrol boats) who landed in force to ascertain whether there was permission or not and identify those present The two doctors claim they had permission from the property to be on the island and their intent was not to have a party as much as to make a promotional video of the area.Raising the alarm was the Lipu which has been guardian of the nature reserve since 1998 and runs guided and quota tours during only certain times of the year so as not to disturb protected species which gives its name to the municipality that is on dry land is privately owned and has been a Reserve since 1997 with some areas of absolute prohibition due to the strategic particularity it holds in the migratory routes of many birds that use it as an intermediate stop and for nesting small passerines some of which are also nesting as well as birds of prey from the surrounding areas such as the buzzard and the peregrine falcon The Blackbird and the Eurasian Nuthatch are nesting birds The species that is definitely most conspicuous is the Mediterranean Herring Gull which nests here with several hundred pairs one of the most significant Mediterranean Herring Gull colonies in the Tyrrhenian Sea But in addition to the birds there is a land fauna equally worthy of protection Investigators are checking in which part of the reserve the party guests landed, whether in the absolute protection zone or in the one where tours are organized but music and dancing anyway, Lipu explained, could not have been authorized in any way. “From 1998 to yesterday,” explained Vincenzo Di Dio, director of the reserve managed by Lipu. “It had not occurred to anyone to storm the islet. A very serious fact indeed. Also because in this period there are species that nest on the island and from March 1 to June 30 visits are suspended as it is written on the island where there is in several places posted the regulations.” Now the investigation will clarify whether it was an exclusive themed party or a way to make a promotional video useful for sale. The nature trail allows visitors to tour the reserve by reaching the points of greatest interest. The Oasis Visitor Center is located in one of the town’s main squares where parking is easy. The small, quaint seaside village of Isola delle Femmine offers ample opportunities for overnight stays and dining. Please note: the island and the town have the same name but are located opposite each other. This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks. One study published in 2017 found evidence grape vine viticulture around 6,000 years BC in what is now Georgia How may one react to the written text that runs across the length of a winding street The text depicting stories relevant to the context of the place out in the open for the public at-large to read and engage with a multi-disciplinary artist based in Italy Galegati is bringing together three-lakh and fifty-thousand women to co-own an entire island “We loved the idea to use a capitalistic instrument to do such a revolutionary project We had a year long period of research and discussion on the project and its narratives we signed the association called Femminote,” she explains STIR speaks to Galegati about this project and her overall practice on the sidelines of her exhibit, along with the works of five other artists in a group show, titled Visions in the making, co-curated by Myna Mukherjee and Davide Quadrio, hosted by Italian Embassy Cultural Centre. The event was held parallel to India Art Fair 2020 (January 30–February 28 Rahul Kumar (RK): Your practice is multi-disciplinary What is at the core of your artistic engagement Stefania Galegati (SG): My art teacher used to pose me that question I still find it difficult to identify a single core I have always been looking at the back of things That allows me to operate with a critical freedom where multi-disciplinary practices do not need to be explained and where moving through different disciplines is a consequence and not a cause feelings and technical choices always go together like the body Pushing the failures and the mistakes can open to a lot more possibilities and help change perspective on things RK: How do you decide on the format you choose for a particular work ‘Different stories on the street’ you wrote running text on the streets over several hundred meters What was the objective of this intervention and how was it received SG: I actually do not know…it comes out while I think or start the work I can hardly separate the idea from the medium The writings on the streets started while I was thinking about the idea of a story that accompany you while you walk it was a sound system that I would take on a walk but then I do not remember how it transformed to written words I remember thinking about a specific book that I read in a specific place and how the two things interacted Every one of the works that I have done (actually I am going to paint one tonight at a hospital in Palermo) are very connected to the place that host them so that the story eradicates in its context with a story about that river and the flatland feelings; one in Genova about a Jew-fascist couple that lived there; a collective text on ways of saying about falling on a street that lays on top of a 40m or the prayer/mantra about cancer that I am going to write tonight at a hospital For most of them I commissioned the text to local writers like Rosa Matteucci what are your objectives and process that you have employed It seems unique and bizarre at the same time to ‘acquire an island with ownership of 3.5 lakh women’ acquiring an island as an artwork is unique and bizarre It started two years ago with Valentina Greco telling me she had an idea: she wanted to encroach the Female Island We got so excited that we decided to actually do it Female Island is an actual island in front of the coast between Palermo and the airport in Italy we saw that the island was for sale through a website of the broker agent so we divided for 10 € quotes per head It came out that we only needed 3,50,000 women to buy it We loved the idea to use a capitalistic instrument to do such a revolutionary project we signed the association called Femminote The association's only task is to buy the island and each of us work individually to spread the word In the background of each painting I am rewriting text from a book titled The Second Sex It is a sort of encyclopedia of feminism that I am reading while I am writing it It is a sort of outing of my personal decolonisation from patriarchy it is a practice that allows me to paint and read and write The writing itself becomes a texture of the painting while reflecting on feminism RK: There is a thin line between feminism and equality What and how in your outlook your practices focus on this ideology SG: I personally do not think that feminism should concern equality but should fight for equal rights straight/gay...but the interstices between the groups are that interesting place where we can really do something The Female Island project uses the name of the island to inspire a big collective women action Excluding men has been a very big issue for somebody that took it as a provocation there are countries where women cannot own any land He has been a Consulting Editor with Arts Illustrated and has written for various publications like Mint-Lounge and Vogue Before retiring from mainstream corporate roles he led an art venture for NDTV and was also involved in its television programming When a famed Indian artist used a protest poet’s words without credit it raised a deeper question: who gets to speak The veteran curator on the Sharjah Biennial 16 and collection-building as history-writing This selling exhibition has been conceived as a collaboration between WWF to further ocean conservation initiatives across the UK A museum at Cambridge University examines Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade between 1750-1850 Exclusive preview for subscribers. well as prices the Isles of Fleet dot the murky waters of the Solway Firth Real estate agents are pushing for the sale of Barlocco Island a 10-hectare tidal island for approximately $190,000 That is four times cheaper than your average London flat You would have to build your cozy living space on your own as well as find a sustainable supply of energy and electricity Barlocco is a tidal island and is only accessible by foot at low tide the island lies within the Borgue Coast Site of Specific Scientific Interest Any development would require jumps through multiple bureaucratic hoops These hurdles do not seem to deter prospective buyers Over 50 people have expressed interest in the island La Cornelia Island is one of the 365 islets of the Isletas de Granada off the Asese Peninsula in Nicaragua This island group formed when the nearby Mombacho volcano erupted around 20,000 years ago La Cornelia itself is currently listed at just US$90,000 one of the cheapest islands for sale in the region It is a mere .4 hectares (one acre) of land in Lake Nicaragua Isletas de Granada saw intense naval action and pirate activity During the political strife from the 1970s to 1990s those still Brazil near the end of the São Francisco River lie six lone specks called the Piaçabuçu Islands and they can be yours for a modest price of US$79,500 It is a wonder that this chain has not been snapped up already this is because of a very odd legal technicality the owner of these half-dozen islands would not own them forever Finding additional information on the Piaçabuçu Islands is a challenge No contact details seem to exist for the realtor or governing authority But this price doesn’t stop the imagination from soaring Tucked in Quebec’s Laurentian Mountains between Ottawa and Montreal you can get two adjoining islands measuring a total of 3,690 square meters for $495,000 The main islands already possess a two-story house if you’re looking to expand the amenities you’ll the Sardinian Roberta Piras and the Roman junior Rachele Balini The titles of the men’s slalom (in the late afternoon of today) and the long regatta between Mondello and Isola delle Femmine still remain to be awarded With these two tests will end the 48th world championship of the historic windsurfer class An event with 350 athletes competing from 25 nations that will go down in history for Italo-Belgian company and finally with the support of the Department for Sport of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Tourism Department of the Sicilian Region The contribution made by companions Italy - January 2018 - From 3 to 5 January about 200 adolescents of the Salesian Youth Movement (SYM) of Sicily met in Isola delle Femmine (Palermo) for their annual "Teenage Meeting" this year on the theme "All for one Church." The teens committed themselves to the four pillars of the Church - Prayer Charity and Testimony – and were aided by FMA Salesian Cooperators and animators of SYM's Regional Council Consecrated by the Community Volunteers of the Gospel; Brother Biagio Conte The three days ended with a pledge by the young to live well their being Salesian animators presided over by Fr Domenico Luvarà new Delegate of the Sicilian Episcopal Conference (CESI) for Youth Ministry ANS - “Agenzia iNfo Salesiana” is a on-line almost daily publication the communication agency of the Salesian Congregation enrolled in the Press Register of the Tibunal of Rome as n 153/2007 This site also uses third-party cookies to improve user experience and for statistical purposes By scrolling through this page or by clicking on any of its elements Isola delle Femmine Italy - January 2017 - From 3 to 5 January about 230 teenagers from the Salesian Youth Movement (SYM) in Sicily met at Isola delle Femmine (Palermo) for their annual Adolescents’ Meeting The three-day event had the theme "With you or without you # nonèlastessacosa" in tune with the pastoral plan for 2016-2017 The young people took part in moments of spirituality and the leaders of the Regional Council of the SYM The three-day event ended with the mandate given to the young people by Sister Antonella Allegra and Fr Domenico Luvara In the 60s Malta entered into an agreement with Italy so that archaeological sites such as San Pawl Milqi in Burmarrad and Tas-Silġ in Marsaxlokk would be excavated and studied by Italian archaeologists under the Italian Archaeological Mission the tables have turned and Maltese archaeologists from the University of Malta are being hired directly by the Italian authorities because of the knowledge and experience they have gained in maritime archeology at a depth of more than 80 meters a group of Maltese archaeologists led by Professor Timmy Gambin helped in the recovery of remains of a Roman temple which was shipwrecked near a small island just outside of Palermo more than 20 centuries ago in the waters that lap the shores of Isola delle Femmine Maltese archaeologists have just lit a bright light on the wreck of a Roman temple that dates back a little more than 2,000 years The shipwreck occurred sometime between the first century BC and the first century AD and the discovery was made in the summer of 202 Professor Gambin explained that the remains of this xini are located at a depth of approximately 90 metres The Department of Environmental Protection of Italy (ARPA) was carrying out monitoring work on the environment Coincidentally they found the remains of many amphorae pottery vessels that in this case were carrying wine Sicilian authorities hired archaeologists from the University of Malta to help them with their studies We immediately realized that we have the first layer of amphorae This Roman xini was carrying at least a thousand amphorae with wine There is a xini that was found in France that was found to be carrying 4,000 there may be hundreds if not thousands of amphorae still under the mud at this site Maltese archaeologists – armed with cylinders tools and the experience they have gained over the last 20 years – descended on the site and recovered two of these pottery amphorae – goods which provide clues about the role of the Maltese islands in the single market of the time of the Roman Empire These amphorae used to arrive in Malta in large quantities When you see a site like this that has wine amphorae coming from Italy which also arrived in Malta and in France suddenly we can start to better understand not only the role but also how Malta was included in the framework of Roman trade This is an example of a common market and globalization 2,000 years ago At the end of the season of work on this xini for this year Professor Gambin talks about his satisfaction because the Maltese archaeologists are now no longer only receiving but offering knowledge and their ability on sites abroad following the experience with the work we have been doing on the Phoenician xini and on other sites So where before we would wait for people to come from abroad and do the work for us now the tables have turned and we are traveling and doing the work ourselves and training the people abroad Meanwhile the wreck of the Roman shrine remains protected at the bottom of the sea where it has been for 2,000 years until Maltese archaeologists return to it to continue their studies.
