told to stay at home before animal was sedated and captured
A lion prowled the streets of an Italian seaside town for several hours after escaping from a local circus, prompting campaigners to call for Italy to ban wild animals in entertainment.
Alessandro Grando, the mayor of Ladispoli, near Rome, had told residents to stay at home on Saturday while police and circus staff sought to catch the animal, which was eventually sedated and captured.
Videos later published in Italian media, apparently taken by locals and not authenticated by the Guardian, showed the adult lion walking through dark and deserted streets.
But Rony Vassallo, who is responsible for the animals in the Rony Roller Circus, said that while the thought of confronting a lion would make most people fearful, eight-year-old Kimba posed little danger.
“He met with people in an environment he wasn’t used to ... and nothing happened. He didn’t even for a second have the instinct to attack a person,” he told AFP at the circus site. He said his fear had been “that someone could have harm the animal, out of fear, or excess enthusiasm”.
In a Facebook post at about 10.30pm (2130 GMT), more than five hours after his message raising the alarm, Grando said the lion had been “sedated and captured”. “Now he will be taken in hand by the circus staff,” he wrote, thanking emergency services and volunteers who helped during “these hours of great concern”.
“I hope that this episode can stir some consciences, and that we can finally put an end to the exploitation of animals in circuses,” the mayor added.
Anticipating residents’ complaints, he earlier said he had not authorised the presence of a circus with lions in the town, but that he did not have the power to block it.
Vassallo said Kimba had been only lightly sedated and had woken up almost immediately, while examinations by vets had concluded he bore no ill-effects from his excursion.
But the handler, whose family runs the travelling circus, said they were all “very shaken and very tense” after the escape, which he believed was not an accident. Vassallo said he had personally checked on the cage an hour before the lion went walkabout, and “everything was in order”.
He declined to comment on reports of sabotage, including that the lock was forced, saying an investigation was under way. But he said it had never happened before and it was “very strange”.
Kimba was born and raised in captivity, alongside his two brothers, Zeus and Ivan, and sister Maya. The circus has drawn the ire of animal rights campaigners, who say keeping such wild creatures is cruel.

More than 20 European countries have banned or heavily restricted the use of animals in circuses, but Italy is not yet among them.
A law has been drafted but was this year delayed to 2024, according to the LAV campaign group, which estimated that just under 2,000 animals are held in circuses across Italy.
What happened in Ladispoli “highlights the dangers of circuses with animals from the point of view of public security”, said the animal rights group OIPA. But it also highlighted “the discomfort of poor creatures forced into captivity for entertainment”.
Vassallo said critics “don’t know the reality of the facts, how animals are treated in circuses, or the checks that are carried out”.

Our story has been coopted for a number of specific narratives
whether the evils of the Soviet Empire or the muddling of Jewish identity in America
in short: My parents wanted to come to the United States for a chance to be seen as true citizens
with all rights and privileges pertaining thereto
The decision to move wasn't just about the chance to practice Judaism in the very tangible way of going to temple and lighting the Shabbat candles — many Soviet Jews didn't take too well to rituals anyway
It was about living in a place where one is allowed to be openly Jewish
citing the émigrés' lack of a “well-founded fear of persecution.” Up until then
refugee status for Soviet émigrés had been nearly automatic
Is state-sanctioned exclusion from college
enough of a “well-founded fear of persecution?” What of running for your life after being viciously beaten by your fellow soldiers while serving as a conscript
of taking the mother’s surname — for two generations

What of always feeling like an “other” in a country where your family has lived for generations

But in 1988 she witnessed a speech in Moscow’s Pushkin Square — a meeting place for those hungry to discuss the recent political and social developments — by a member of a group called Pamyat (Russian for “memory”)
He wore head-to-toe black and carried a briefcase out of which he pulled important-looking documents
it became evident to her that his entire platform entailed blaming Jews for Russia’s problems
She looked around at the attentive faces in the crowd and noticed many nodding along in agreement

While some of those denied refugee status opted for Israel
many of those who had hoped to immigrate to America were stranded
Certain families in our circle in Italy had considered Israel
when at a meeting with an Israeli agency representative they were told they were going to be taken to the country
Behind closed doors, certain Jewish leaders, U.S. administration officials, and Israeli officials expressed irritation with the approximately 90 percent of émigrés who chose America over Israel

Residents of one Italian village had a shock on Nov. 11, 2023 when an animal somehow got out of his enclosure at the circus. A male 8-year-old lion escaped the circus in Italy
and spent about five hours on his own before being brought back into custody of the circus
The lion didn't cause any harm to humans in his path, and overall, no major damage was done. However, the mayor of the Italian town where the lion spent his time off spoke out about the need to end the use of animals for entertainment in circuses
This lion wandered the streets of an Italian village
As Business Insider reported, Kimba the lion escaped a circus in the town of Ladispoli
told residents to stay in their homes until the lion could be apprehended
The lion spent about five hours strolling the streets of Ladispoli
and a police helicopter managed to track him using an infrared camera
Kimba is part of the "Rony Roller" traveling circus
scheduled to remain in this particular village until Nov
A number of amateur videos and photos have appeared of Kimba's reign over the town
told Reuters: "What happened is very strange...All we can say is that a lion does not have the ability to open a latch and break a lock."
circus operators told La Repubblica they suspected sabotage
explaining that they came upon the open lion's cage and glimpsed three people running away from the scene

Mayor Grando didn't merely focus on the safety of the town's residents, but also took this opportunity to focus on animal rights. On Nov. 12, Grando posted on Facebook in Italian: "I hope this episode can raise some conscience
and that we can finally put an end to animal exploitation in circuses," according to Facebook's translation
Mayor Grasso met with Vassallo to discuss the incident
and created a plan to "make sure that the safety of citizens and animals themselves is not put at risk again," according to another Facebook post
Grasso wrote that Vassallo was apologetic
and agreed to: stop using big cats in shows immediately; transfer of all Rony Roller's animals to "another suitable location" on Nov
14; stop using circus animals in the show starting Nov
14; as well as improve "measures for supervision and guarding of animals until their transfer."
He added: "it will be the circus we like the most
One Ladispoli resident told Reuters: "I am sorry

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) also points out that circus animals (or any captive animals, for that matter) don't get opportunities to socialize or exercise the way they would in the wild
They may develop health conditions as a direct result of the forced circus activities
as well as the fact that they spend the majority of their time chained or caged

The sleepy seaside town of Ladispoli had an unexpected shock on Saturday night as a circus lion prowled its streets sparking panic
Kimba, the main event at the Rony Roller circus in Italy
mysteriously left his metal enclosure before authorities captured him
The eight-year-old adult lion was on the loose for seven hours before he was shot with an anesthetic dart and sedated
Residents were ordered not to leave their homes as a special operation was carried out
Local authorities are investigating how the lion managed to get out of its metal enclosure - and the circus suspects foul play
“What happened is very strange - all we can say is that a lion does not have the ability to open a latch and break a lock,” Rony Vassallo, the animal supervisor and trainer at the circus told Reuters.
Kimba is reported to have taken many well-deserved naps to recover from the excitement of his adventures into the town which is just miles from Rome
Footage and pictures, some taken by locals, went viral and showed the circus performer roaming around the town streets, skirting houses and fences, and standing in front of a carabinieri police car.
In a Facebook post on Monday, local mayor Alessandro Grando wrote that he would ask council experts to check if there were legal grounds to revoke the permits for the “Rony Roller” circus. The travelling circus was scheduled to stay in Ladipsoli between the 9th to 19th November and is set to continue.
Some locals expressed solidarity with Kimba.
“I am sorry, because it is in prison. It should be in its environment, the savannah,” said Ladispoli resident Giuseppe Altavilla.
Others said: “He just chilling minding his business on an evening stroll let him live”.
In an post on their Instagram page, Rony Roller said: “Thanks to the whole city of Ladispoli for the patience and support given in these last hours.
“Above all, a big thank you goes to Mayor Alessandro Grando as well as to all the authorities and law enforcment who did everything to bring Kimba home health.”

Lately there has been renewed discussion of Caravaggio’s death
on the Tuscan coast near the border with Lazio
when the artist was not yet 39 years old.More and more cultural initiatives are being promoted in the town of Ladispoli
which with commendable tenacity and ambition intend precisely to advance another thesis
according to which the painter died in the hamlet of Palo Laziale (at that time
Here he had certainly disembarked on the voyage from Naples that was to take him to Rome
waiting to receive a pardon for the murder he committed in 1606
he was temporarily detained by the guards manning the port of call while the boat that had brought him there returned to Naples with his canvases
for unknown reasons he headed for Porto Ercole
Much has been speculated around Michelangelo Merisi’s last days
attempting to somehow fill the information gap in the sources
recorded in the oldest biographies and documents
He had even gone so far as to assume that the painter had been murdered in Palo
if not even earlier by throwing his body into the sea
according to a hypothesis that cried “state murder.” some of the highest authorities and institutions of the time would have hatched
happy “to get rid of an inconvenient protester
an artist who with every painting entered into controversy with Catholic orthodoxy and forced the public to reflect.” Perhaps a little too little (as well as exaggerated
been the only eccentric hypothesis about Caravaggio launched by Pacelli
but it had essentially fallen on deaf ears already in the circles closest to him
with which it is intended to “reaffirm” the conviction of death on the Latium coast
Still fresh is the memory of the initiative sponsored by the then municipal administration of the ’rival’ (in the Ladispolan view) Porto Ercole
carrying Merisi’s alleged mortal remains in triumph
These remains were attributed to him (with probability
estimated at 85 percent) through research whose goodness
even a National Geographic documentary made and
a monument and funerary park of dubious aesthetic taste in the center of the Tuscan village
later wisely removed and in any case confined to a more peripheral location
Among art historians there were those who made their dissent heard
is not happening now with the Ladispolan operation
Perhaps people do not want to give it too much weight
perhaps it is resignation before yet another manifestation of the now unstoppable so-called "Caravaggiomania." Yet the project of a ’claiming’ statue
which would at the same time launch an anti-historical message and an advertising one for the benefit of a few
At least by those who truly know and care about Caravaggio
was filmed by locals prowling residential streets in Ladispoli
Kimba was in town with the Rony Roller Circus which boasts exotic animals including lions
Town mayor Alessandro Grando raised the alarm on Saturday afternoon local time to warn residents of the feline's escape
"Circus staff are carrying out seizure operations
with the support of law enforcement who quickly intervened on the scene," he said on Facebook
Kimba the lion walks down a residential street in Ladispoli
Picture by @welcometofavelas_4k on InstagramAbout six hours later Mr Grando posted an update to confirm the lion had been sedated and captured
The mayor anticipated backlash to the circus being allowed into town and said the city had no choice unless laws were changed
"The answer is that I haven't authorised anything
and that unfortunately we can't forbid circuses with animals from coming to our city," Mr Grando said
"I hope this episode can raise some conscience and that we can finally put an end to animal exploitation in circuses."
Meanwhile the Rony Roller Circus shared news coverage of the incident on social media and encouraged locals to visit Kimba during its shows
"Thanks to the whole city of Ladispoli for the patience and support given in these last hours," an Instagram post from the circus said
a big thank you goes to Mayor Alessandro Grando as well as to all the authorities and law enforcement who did everything to bring Kimba home healthy."

La Posta Vecchia blends the old-school Italian concept of villeggiatura (the idea of escaping city life to the country or coast to refresh the body and mind) with contemporary style
La Posta Vecchi is foremost a seaside retreat for city folks
The result is a coastal hideaway with Pellicano touches
such as the iconic striped lounge chairs and a boutique retail shop selling Italian artisan items and design pieces from Issimo
if you fall in love with your stylish parasol or striped beach towel you can simply buy it online when you get home
Farm-to-table and sustainability plays a large part of the hotel’s culinary ethos; chef Antonio Magliulo leads an ambitious and predominantly meat-free menu which uses ingredients from the hotel’s vegetable garden and local produce
and still something of a rarity to see this level of commitment to sustainability in the luxury hotel space
Suites have been modernised with respect to the original renaissance style
Perhaps what sets La Posta Vecchia apart is the love Sciò feels for her family home
There might be Roman ruins in the basement and priceless art on the walls but this is also where

Beyond its history and renaissance splendour
La Posta Vecchia is still doing what it’s always done – offering a lavish
beachy respite from the frenetic buzz of one of the world’s most popular tourist cities
So once you’ve ticked off Rome’s Colosseum and carbonara
why not do as the Romans do and escape to the sea
La Posta Vecchia might be close in distance to Rome
but on many levels it’s truly a world away

Because as soon as those Roman cobblestones start to sizzle under the unforgiving sun, it becomes evident that the moment has arrived to bid farewell to the bustling city and embrace the invigorating coastal breeze.
But while many locals are in on the secret, let’s face it; when you think of the Italian seaside the Lazio coastline doesn’t quite evoke the dreamy imagery of sun soaking, luxury seafront hotels or living la dolce vita.
Enter La Posta Vecchia, with its rosy pink-tinged walls, nestled on the scenic Ladispoli waterfront, just a short hop from central Rome. This grand dame is more than just a hotel. It’s got history, glamour, style and a whole lot of soul.
Now in the hands of his daughter, Marie Louise Sciò, La Posta Vecchia has been given a new lease on life under the Pellicano Group of luxury hotels. As Pellicano’s chief executive and creative director, Sciò has modernised the brand, with a collection of properties that cater to guests with an eye for luxurious yet simple details.
There’s an indoor pool, spa and upmarket restaurant. But just like its sister locations, the Hotel Il Pellicano in Tuscany and watchtower turned hotel Mezzatorre in Ischia, La Posta Vecchia blends the old-school Italian concept of villeggiatura (the idea of escaping city life to the country or coast to refresh the body and mind) with contemporary style.
The result is a coastal hideaway with Pellicano touches, such as the iconic striped lounge chairs and a boutique retail shop selling Italian artisan items and design pieces from Issimo, the hotel group’s e-commerce offshoot. So yes, if you fall in love with your stylish parasol or striped beach towel you can simply buy it online when you get home.
Farm-to-table and sustainability plays a large part of the hotel’s culinary ethos; chef Antonio Magliulo leads an ambitious and predominantly meat-free menu which uses ingredients from the hotel’s vegetable garden and local produce, and avoids slow cooking to save energy. It’s a refreshing approach, and still something of a rarity to see this level of commitment to sustainability in the luxury hotel space.
Perhaps what sets La Posta Vecchia apart is the love Sciò feels for her family home. There might be Roman ruins in the basement and priceless art on the walls but this is also where, as a child, Sciò says she spent many gleeful hours playing hide and seek in the Roman museum, beneath the property’s foundations.
And, of course, there’s the seaside. Beyond its history and renaissance splendour, La Posta Vecchia is still doing what it’s always done – offering a lavish, beachy respite from the frenetic buzz of one of the world’s most popular tourist cities.
So once you’ve ticked off Rome’s Colosseum and carbonara, why not do as the Romans do and escape to the sea? La Posta Vecchia might be close in distance to Rome, but on many levels it’s truly a world away.
