Lamezia Terme returns to the carefree and optimistic atmosphere of the 1960s with the fifth edition of Lira Day, scheduled for Saturday 26 April 2025 in Piazza Mercato Vecchio. A day dedicated to memory and sharing, which will transform one of the city's symbolic places into a real open-air vintage set.
The programme is rich and designed to involve people of all ages. It starts in the morning, at 10.30 am, with an animated visit and workshop for families and children in the rooms of the Lametino Archaeological Museum. In the afternoon, from 3.30 p.m., Piazza Mercato Vecchio will become the set for shooting the official Lira Day commercial: everyone is invited to participate wearing period clothing, to immerse themselves even more in the atmosphere of the 1960s.
There will also be ‘old-fashioned’ games for children, organised by the operators of the Chiostro Caffè Letterario, in the San Domenico monumental complex, from 4:00 to 5:30 pm. Also in the afternoon, from 4.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m., space will also be given to health with free medical screening promoted by the Lions Club Lamezia Terme.
At 6.30 p.m., in Piazza Mercato Vecchio, there will be a public talk dedicated to the theme of trust, from the 1960s to today, with the participation of journalists, teachers and professionals. Immediately afterwards, music will take over thanks to a live performance by the Tchaikovsky State Conservatory of Nocera Terinese.
To enrich the day, there will be many details that will make the experience even more immersive: the exhibition of vintage cars and motorbikes, a vintage photo booth, the original ‘Lyre Tree’ and a station where, in just a few minutes, it will be possible to have one's hair styled as in the 1960s.

Immerse yourself in Luigi Pirandello's fascinating universe with ‘’Think about it Giacomino‘’, one of the great Sicilian playwright's most incisive works. At the centre of the scene, Professor Agostino Toti, a teacher disillusioned and embittered by society, decides to challenge conventions with a daring gesture: to marry a young girl pregnant by another man. His choice becomes a provocation against hypocrisy and the masks society wears to hide its lack of moral principles.
With his characteristic mix of irony and social criticism, Pirandello offers a profound and topical look at the fragility of values and human dynamics, returning a work full of food for thought and great emotional intensity.

One of the most eagerly awaited shows of the year is about to arrive in Calabria too: ‘They threw me to the wolves and I didn't come out the top’, the new show by Michela Giraud, queen of Italian stand-up comedy and the first comedian in our country to have a Netflix special distributed in 190 countries! The only Calabrian leg of the tour will be held on 6 March 2025 at 21:00 at the Municipal Theatre Grandinetti in Lamezia Terme.
Michela Giraud brings to the stage a hilarious reflection on the rhetoric of winners, with all her ironic and desecrating verve: we laugh, we recognise and we console ourselves, among the small daily failures and the limits that make life unique. The pre-sale is already active on ticketone.it and in authorised points. Don't miss the opportunity to attend a unique show that will make you laugh and reflect on what it really means to face life among ‘wolves’!

On 18 February 2025, the Grandinetti Theatre in Lamezia Terme will stage one of the most eagerly awaited theatrical performances of the year: One, No One and a Hundred Thousand, based on Luigi Pirandello's masterpiece of the same name. In this version, actor Primo Reggiani will give an intense and engaging interpretation of a novel that has profoundly marked 20th century literature.
Uno, nessuno e centomila is a work that continues to surprise for its modernity. The story of Vitangelo Moscarda, the protagonist tormented by the awareness of his own identity, explores highly topical themes such as the relationship with society, spirituality and the search for the self. Moscarda, initially a man imprisoned by the opinions of others, undertakes an inner journey that will lead him to seek spiritual authenticity, freeing himself from the ‘rages of the world’.

Amid gossip, broken dreams and quirky characters, the routine of a small salon is disrupted by the murder of the neighbouring pianist. A stroll along the avenues of the festively decorated cities
makes shopping and the Calabrian sales rush a pleasant experience
alternating a stop in front of the shop windows with a taste of a Calabrian Christmas dessert or a visit to the museums in the centre
is a riot of shops and elegant shop windows

Corso Mazzini also offers a sampling of traditional Cosenza pastries and other typical delicacies
a pasticciotto filled with chocolate and almonds
or the ever-present Fichi Dottati di Cosenza PDO chocolate-covered figs
The sales atmosphere in Catanzaro can also be felt inside the Mancuso Gallery
offers shoppers a cosy and sheltered space

EasyJet has added nine new flight routes for 2025 departing from France
including a direct flight from Bordeaux to Birmingham from May onwards.
EasyJet will be offering flights from Bordeaux to Corfu (Greece)
Budapest (Hungary) and Birmingham; from Paris-Orly to Milan-Malpensa; from Nice to Lamezia Terme (Italy) and Santorini (Greece); and from Figari (Corsica) to Milan-Linate.
This announcement was made on December 11 in a press release and follows the adding of 27 new routes for the 2024/2025 programme announced in October.
It now means that EasyJet offers more than 300 flights from 20 airports in France and further assuages fears that the airline might be withdrawing from the country.
These fears surfaced when the carrier announced the surprise closure of its base at Toulouse-Blagnac airport

A slow post-Covid recovery and the current economic situation were the reasons used to explain this closure.
Bordeaux airport was also the location for a surprise departure when Ryanair announced in May that it would no longer offer any flights to the airport from November.
This was due to fee increases to use Bordeaux-Mérignac airport that were set to come into force from November
which an airport spokesperson then described as the “worst-case scenario”.

At the time, Ryanair operated 39 lines from Bordeaux airport. EasyJet is now the main airline operator in the airport and offers 38 routes.

The hearing for more than 300 defendants opened in a specially constructed bunker on the sprawling grounds of an industrial park in the town of Lamezia Terme in Calabria, the toe of the boot-shaped Italian peninsula.
Prosecutors are hoping the trial will be a decisive blow for the Calabrian-based ‘Ndrangheta, which has exploited tens of billions of dollars in cocaine revenues to extend its criminal reach across Europe and into several other continents.
Anti-mafia prosecutor Nicola Gratteri said the trial was a turning point showing that the ‘Ndrangheta was finally being called out for its crimes and brought to face justice.
“Decades ago, people would tremble when talking about Cosa Nostra or when using the word ’Ndrangheta, something they would say only in a hidden room, around the fireplace, whispering,” Gratteri said Wednesday as he arrived at the makeshift courthouse. “Today we are beginning to speak out in the open sunlight.
“In the last two years, we can say we have been seeing a spike in complaints by businessmen, bullied citizens, victims of usury, people who for years have been subject to the pall of the ’Ndrangheta.”
World & Nation
Pope Francis’ campaign against corruption in the Catholic Church has made Italy’s most dangerous mafia organization “nervous,” which could make the prelate a target
a leading Italian prosecutor warned Thursday
Investigators say the ’Ndrangheta has established bases in much of Western, Northern and Central Europe
The trial grew out of the investigation of 12 clans linked to a convicted ‘Ndrangheta boss
who served 19 years in Italian prison for his role in leading what investigators say is one of the ‘Ndrangheta’s most powerful crime families
The prosecution has indicated that it hopes to call more than 900 witnesses
The trial is expected to last at least a year
Among the accusations being considered by the court are drug- and arms-trafficking
extortion and “Mafia association,” a term used in Italy’s penal code for members of organized crime groups
Others are charged with complicity with the ’Ndrangheta without actually being members
World & Nation
Some 325 defendants were ordered to be tried in Lamezia Terme
while about 90 more defendants in the investigation chose to have a fast-track trial
which begins later this month elsewhere in Calabria
a separate trial involving five murders begins in February
The Lamezia Terme bunker is so vast that a score of video screens have been affixed to the ceiling so that participants can better view the proceedings
There are rows of tables for some 600 lawyers to work
with microphones and chairs safely distanced to respect coronavirus health rules
While the numbers are impressive, this week’s trial isn’t Italy’s largest one against alleged mobsters. In 1986, in a similarly specially constructed bunker in Palermo, 475 alleged members of Cosa Nostra
Those proceedings resulted in more than 300 convictions and 19 life sentences
and helped reveal much about the brutal methods and murderous strategies of the top mob bosses on the island
including sensational killings that bloodied the Palermo area during years of power struggles
this trial against the ‘Ndrangheta is in large part aimed at gaining convictions for alleged connivance among mobsters and local politicians
businessmen and members of secret lodges — an indication of how rooted the syndicate is in the territory
Based almost entirely on blood ties
the ‘Ndrangheta for decades was practically free of turncoats and informers
But those ranks are starting to grow: Among those turning state’s evidence in the Lamezia Terme trial is a relative of Mancuso. Several dozen informants in the case come from the ‘Ndrangheta, but others are from the former ranks of Cosa Nostra in Sicily and could be called to testify.
Awash in cocaine-trafficking revenues, the ‘Ndrangheta has gobbled up hotels, restaurants, pharmacies, car dealerships and other businesses throughout Italy, especially in Rome and the affluent north, criminal investigations have revealed.
The buying spree in past years spread heavily across Europe, as the ’Ndrangheta sought to launder illicit revenues but also to make money by running legitimate businesses, including in the tourism and hospitality sectors, according to investigators.

Specially built courtroom in Calabria heard evidence of ruthless tactics of ’Ndrangheta crime syndicate
An Italian court has convicted and sentenced more than 200 people of crimes including criminal association
extortion and bribery in what has been described as Italy’s largest mafia trial in three decades
The verdicts mark the end of a three-year “maxi trial” held in a high-security courtroom in the southern Calabria region built specifically to hold up to 350 defendants
accommodate 400 lawyers and hear from the 900 witnesses providing testimony against an extensive network of members belonging to the notorious ’Ndrangheta
Although more than 100 individuals were acquitted by the court in Lamezia Terme
the sentencing represents one of the most significant blows to date against the powerful organised crime syndicate
which enjoys a near-monopoly on the European cocaine trade
Almost all of the defendants were arrested in December 2019 after a lengthy investigation that began in 2016 and covered at least 11 Italian regions. About 2,500 officers participated in raids focused on suspects in Vibo Valentia
the heart of an area controlled mainly by the ’Ndrangheta’s Mancuso clan
arrested several suspects hiding in bunkers located behind sliding staircases
hidden trapdoors and maintenance-hole covers
local councillors and businessmen accused of aiding the mafia were also arrested in Germany
The former Forza Italia MP Giancarlo Pittelli was given a jail term of 11 years by a court for aiding a mafia clan
an anti-mafia prosecutor who led the investigation
told the Guardian at the time of the raids that it was the biggest operation against the crime syndicates since the 1986-92 Palermo maxi trials
when Sicilian prosecutors put 475 people in the dock

The Italian Army’s two AW169 basic training twin-engine helicopters recently set a first important milestone by accruing 1,000 flight hours in operations
The type has been in service with the Italian Army since July 2020 when the first aircraft was delivered to the 2nd Army Aviation Regiment ‘Sirio’ based in Lamezia Terme in Southern Italy
followed by the second helicopter a few months afterwards.
The introduction of the latest generation training helicopter (designated UH-169B) allows the Italian Army to prepare its crews for the future operational transition
This will be to an all-new advanced multirole Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) program
developed from the AW169 dual-use baseline
which is aimed at longer-term fleet modernization and rationalization plan
The two AW169 trainers will enable the Italian Army to familiarize itself with the platform’s basic characteristics during the development of the new LUH
These have been supplied with comprehensive turnkey logistical support and a pilot/maintenance technician training package which will maintain high availability rates and ensure operational readiness
The LUH program is aimed at progressively replacing ageing models
AB212 and AB412 to meet evolving operational requirements
the program benefits from a more efficient supply chain based on a ‘one single platform’ approach
specifically developed for the Italian Army leverages on the AW169M military helicopter baseline
and also provides the advantage of unique logistical
certification and training commonalities and synergies across the growing AW169 fleets of government operators in Italy
This strengthens the possibility to perform effective and safe joint operations with other users of this modern type and represents a quantum leap in homeland security
emergency response capability and overall through-lifecycle costs/effectiveness for decades to come
The overall AW169 LUH program is based on an advanced multirole configuration provided with dedicated flight/mission equipment including
the Leonardo MAIR (Multi Aperture InfraRed) threat warning system and an advanced C4 command
control and communication system to grant full interoperability with other assets in the NATO environment
The Italian Army will initially receive 15 AW169 LUHs starting in 2023.
The Italian Army issued the following statement on reaching the milestone
“The 2nd Army Aviation Regiment ‘Sirio’ is the Italian Army flight Unit designated to study and verify in flight the basic version of the aircraft
in order to settle modifications aimed to its reconfiguration into the LUH military version.”
