The Italian internment camp of Maria Eisenstein’s 1944 memoir isn’t the hellscape of Auschwitz-Birkenau or Bergen-Belsen
no one is gassed or beaten to death or starved
“The days can be stomached,” Eisenstein writes
a place of Kafkaesque confinement and petty privations for foreign Jews and others targeted by Mussolini’s regime
fear and the looming threat of deportation to Nazi concentration camps
while enjoying the pleasures of gossip and occasional brief trips to the neighboring town
The original publication of Internee Number 6 underlined a complicity in Fascism that Italians preferred to forget
Historian Carlo Spartaco Capogreco argues that postwar denial contributed to the book’s subsequent neglect
this edition marks the book’s first English-language publication
Donatello De Luigi’s introduction to the first Italian edition
explanatory footnotes and essays by Capogreco and Eisenstein’s son
The historian details his efforts to track down Eisenstein
who was born in Vienna to Polish Jewish parents and eventually emigrated to California
months after the 50th anniversary reissue of her book in Italy
Steele contributes a rambling but informative reminiscence
His mother’s imprisonment and subsequent hardships transformed her
“from a Jewish Princess to a Jewish Warrior Queen.” A feminist before her time
“a little eccentric but stately and diplomatic as well,” a popular teacher who probably suffered from PTSD
De Luigi calls it “neither diary nor novel” and compares it to a screenplay
We’re told that it is based on both “scattered notes” Eisenstein made at the camp during the summer of 1940 and on writing in Naples and Rome four years later
contains fictive elements — such as its description of the “dramatic demise” of the camp commissioner
who in actuality simply received a job transfer
recounts the manuscript falling into the hands of an America G.I
The narrative of Eisenstein’s confinement in Lanciano (which she short-hands as “L.”) is interrupted by a long flashback describing her brief
The interpolation contributes to the book’s fragmentary feel
Highly educated and multilingual (her son says she was fluent in six languages and conversant in two others)
Eisenstein writes with a certain ironic detachment
“I write for the relief of transcribing a few small things that have happened in here
adding: “Action is easier to represent than mood
She focuses mostly on her fellow internees
while expressing frustration at her inability to render them fully
Lanciano might not have shorn away all vestiges of reason or morality
But it still exacted compromises and illuminated character
sometimes repugnant and frequently touching
gains special privileges by conducting an affair with the camp commissioner
“You really are hideous in the morning,” Eisenstein thinks
“has the vacant look of an old comedian or an old cop,” Eisenstein writes
“His senile passion for the thirty-year-old Natasha has put an extra spring in his step.”
a political identity.” But Sacha rejects antisemitism and claims to be friends with many Jews
who describes her as “intelligent” and “humane.”
One of the recurring motifs of the memoir is Eisenstein’s grief at her abandonment by her lover
she gets sick enough to be hospitalized and imagines summoning him to her bedside
offering “reason to hope.” But not for long
She includes a heart-rending letter – it’s unclear if it was ever sent – lamenting his silence
may stand in for the larger betrayal of Italy
But it was also devastating in its own right – forever tainting her view of romance
“I wield great authority in the camp and am well liked.” She busies herself composing letters for her fellow inmates
She worries about the fate of the Jews under Hitler
and rightly so: Most of her extended family is killed
though her mother and maternal grandmother survive
The narrative culminates in a quarrel and investigation involving Pistone
who is both Pistone’s assistant and his rival
Other inmates do their best to avoid the fray
The book ends abruptly but Eisenstein’s own ordeals
life under surveillance and flight across the mountains of Abruzzo
Internee Number 6 is what Eisenstein left behind
a testament to the power of writing when nothing else seems controllable

"Have you come to believe because you have seen me
Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed." (John 20:29).
The moment in the Mass when the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ is known as the Consecration
which is the most solemn part of the Mass.
The doctrine of the Real Presence in Catholicism holds that Jesus Christ is truly present—body
and divinity—in the Eucharist.
Turning to Pope Francis's words in the Angelus Message of June 19
his life given for each of us."
He also gave us a prayer for moments when we are in Christ's Eucharistic Presence
"Adoring the Body and Blood of Christ," he said
and satisfy me with your presence!"
Pope Francis celebrates the Feast of Corpus Christi outdoors for the first time since the pandemic.
The feast honors the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist
Eucharistic miracles further attest to the profound truth
and inexhaustible mystery of the Eucharist
The first recorded miracle occurred in the Italian town of Lanciano.
helps us rediscover one of the greatest events in the Church's history.
"occurred in the first half of the eighth century
where a priest who remained anonymous and who was never given a conventional baptism had doubts about transubstantiation."
Eucharistic miracles speak profoundly about the nature of faith
and the power of divine intervention.
"The Host became a part of the left ventricle
which is the part of the human body that is essential for the heart's function
and this part of the myocardial tissue was aching and bleeding
while the wine turned into human blood and within a few moments changed from a liquid to a solid state."
these miracles are a call to deepen their faith
They are seen as signs from God meant to strengthen belief in the mysteries of the Christian faith that are beyond human understanding
These events encourage a more profound reverence for the sacraments and inspire more fervent participation in communal worship and prayer.
What do eucharistic miracles say to us?
Eucharistic miracles are seen as profound expressions of God's ongoing engagement with and love for the world
offering both a mystery to ponder and a catalyst for more profound spiritual commitment.
"The preservation itself is a miracle," Brother Santino explained further
"It has even been studied and investigated through the works of Professor Edoardo Linoli
If we put water on the Host transformed into human flesh
it starts to redden because it is dehydrated flesh
There is no chemical powder used for preservation."
the Italian town of Lanciano has borne witness to the Real Presence of the Eucharist
We should never forget that we witness a miracle each time we attend Mass.

ROME — A man was killed and two women injured when a driver lost control of his car in Italy’s central town of Lanciano on Friday during celebrations for Italy’s 80th Liberation Day, local media and rescuers said.
The driver, an 80-year-old man, reportedly fell ill before hitting the crowd, firefighters said. An investigation was underway.
An 81-year-old man died immediately after being hit by the car, while two women were injured and transferred to the hospital, local media reported.
Italy celebrates its Liberation Day, known as “Festa della Liberazione,” with a national public holiday on April 25. In addition to the closure of schools, public offices and most shops, the day is marked with parades and demonstrations across the country.
The accident in Lanciano happened at the end of the local parade organized by ANPI, the Italian partisans’ association that preserves the memory of the Resistance movement against the Fascists.
The ceremonies are held in commemoration of the end of the Fascist rule and the Nazi occupation during World War II, as well as the victory of Italy’s partisans movement.
This year the 80th anniversary of the liberation coincides with the five-day period of national mourning for the death of Pope Francis, with the right-wing government urging organizers to carry out celebrations with due “sobriety.”

is on trial in Lanciano for murder of fellow Briton Michele Faiers
A British man living in Italy has admitted stabbing his partner to death
claiming he did it after she accused him of cheating on her
told a court he could not remember how many times he stabbed fellow Briton Michele Faiers
The couple had been living in a renovated cottage in Verratti, a remote village in Abruzzo, at the time of the killing, the Times reported
Whitbread fled the scene and drove back to the UK but his daughter alerted police to his whereabouts when Faiers’s body was discovered
the former diving instructor from Torquay alleged Faiers had accused him of having an affair over several months after she saw him patting a woman’s bottom at a party in 2022
told the courthouse in Lanciano that the couple would have violent arguments about the incident
He said that on the evening of 28 October 2023
Whitbread said he took a knife from the kitchen
“It was after 10 months of being accused of something I did not do,” he continued
“She kicked me in the intimate parts and was trying to push me down the stairs
That is when I grabbed the knife in panic.”
Faiers was found by Italian police lying in bed with seven stab wounds to the back
I don’t remember how many times,” Whitbread told the court
He claimed that Faiers’s behaviour before her death had led him to attempt suicide

Faiers’s three adult daughters attended the hearing
consoling each other as Whitbread described how he killed their mother
said after the hearing: “It’s important he’s confessed; something he has never done
That was really important for Michele’s daughters because it is a way to begin again.”
with the judge having commissioned a psychological assessment of Whitbread

Longo Borghini third in summit finish with gap for race lead at just one second going into final day
Maglia rosa Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek) had Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime) on her rear wheel for the entire climb until Kopecky attacked with 300 metres to go
Longo Borghini jumped to the World Champion's wheel and held on
With 6 bonus seconds to Kopecky and 4 to the Italian
the gap between the two riders is now down to only one second going into the final stage
I don’t think I’ve pushed so hard in my life
maybe we can be on the podium with me’,” said Bradbury
Bradbury had made her first move with 10.6km to go but was quickly reeled in again
The 22-year-old Australian then launched her winning attack from the back of the group of favourites
“I was thinking they would catch back up for sure
so it wasn’t that they didn’t have the legs
just that they didn’t expect it,” said Bradbury
Bradbury’s advantage varied between 40 seconds and just over a minute for most of the climb
but she went all-out to keep her rivals behind her on the final kilometres
“I wasn’t really looking at my power meter
I wasn’t really thinking anything apart from each pedal stroke,” Bradbury concluded
The first half of the 120km stage wasn’t easy at all
but the real difficulty came after the intermediate sprint in Manoppello: The first-category Passo Lanciano
followed by a long descent back to Manoppello to climb the same ascent again – but this time
the riders would continue uphill to finish at the Blockhaus after a 16.5km climb with an average gradient of 7.9%
Claire Steels (Movistar Team) attacked with 95km to go
and she was caught again on the Passo Lanciano
wearer of the blue mountain jersey since her stage 4 victory
suffered in the heat and had to abandon the race
leaving Justine Ghekiere (AG Insurance-Soudal) virtually in the lead of the mountain classification
Ghekiere sprinted for the maximum points atop the Passo Lanciano
taking her tally to 41 points which was enough to get the blue jersey after the stage
Local rider Gaia Realini (Lidl-Trek) led the peloton down the descent
and her teammate Brodie Chapman took over the pacing in the valley and on the first kilometre of the Blockhaus climb
she quickly reduced the size of the group even further
Urška Žigart (both Liv-AlUla-Jayco)
and Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (FDJ-Suez) were left
and Žigart were the next to be dropped
though Labous managed to make her way back to the group
Bradbury’s first attack splintered the group as Rooijakkers tried to follow the Australian climber
Longo Borghini led Niedermaier and Kopecky a bit further back
and Longo Borghini brought the chasing trio back at the 10km mark
going to the front of this new group of five
Bradbury slotted in at the back and then launched her second attack with 9.4km to go
quickly getting a gap on the other four riders
and Niedermaier was struggling to hang on in the group behind
Bradbury’s advantage had grown to 52 seconds when Longo Borghini attacked with 6.5km to go
Kopecky immediately jumped to the overall leader’s wheel
but Rooijakkers and Niedermaier were distanced
Rooijakkers came back to Longo Borghini and Kopecky 6km from the finish
This meant that Bradbury could increase her advantage to one minute
and Longo Borghini launched a second attack with 4km to go
dropped Rooijakkers but not shaking Kopecky from her wheel
Rooijakkers came back to the two GC rivals and led them onto the final kilometre where Kopecky launched her bid for the maglia rosa inside the 300-metre mark
attacking hard in an attempt to drop Longo Borghini
reaching Kopecky’s wheel and not giving an inch to the finish to keep the overall lead by one second

The Rochester Slammers 8-and-under softball team moved to 30-0 this summer after Aria Lanciano's walk-off single clinched the New England Regional Babe Ruth championship in their age group
Lanciano's hit completed a rally from down 8-0 as Rochester defeated a team from Stamford
Rochester had won the New Hampshire Babe Ruth state tournament the weekend prior
Rochester also won tournaments in Litchfield
Coach Jake Moody said winning all the tournaments are of course great achievements
but the team had two circled when the summer kicked off
"The states and the regionals were the biggest goal
and these girls achieved that," Moody said
The Slammers opened the summer in Litchfield before Memorial Day
and Moody said it was 'very apparent' there the team would be special
"Just the way they hit the ball and how the gelled together as a team; you could see something was building very early on ..
but I didn't expect 30-0 and six tournament wins."
the Slammers were honored before a New Hampshire Fisher Cats game against Portland on Friday night
The team was on the field pregame for the first pitch and the national anthem
although the game did get rained out shortly after started in the first inning
The team also got to meet the players on the Fisher Cats
Eucharistic miracles are a fascinating phenomenon within the Church’s rich history
As with many concepts of the Catholic faith
grasped or even accepted; they require a deep examination of one’s own faith and a deliberation of belief in Christ
Eucharistic miracles are great food for thought on Holy Thursday
when Catholics acknowledge the institution of the Eucharist
which in and of itself is one of the great mysteries
“We’re asked to believe many things on faith,” said Richard Bernatchez
founder of Faith Based Communications and a member of the Real Presence Eucharistic Education and Adoration Association
“Eucharistic miracles serve as a reminder from Christ of his True Presence within the Blessed Sacrament in order to reinforce our faith.”
Bernatchez is local to Denver but travels around the country giving presentations about Eucharistic miracles and supplies an official
Vatican-authorized exhibit to supplement his presentations
when Jesus Christ broke bread with the Twelve Disciples at the Last Supper
two phrases he spoke instituted the Eucharist
The Church teaches that in the sacrament of the Eucharist
blood and divinity of Jesus Christ through a process called transubstantiation
which literally means that the very substance of which the bread and wine are composed changes into something different entirely; namely
The Church teaches that this process is a mystery and not meant to be fully understood
and though the bread and wine still appear to be unchanged after the consecration
the Church is clear that this is not the case
As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states
“At the heart of the Eucharistic celebration are the bread and wine that
by the words of Christ and the invocation of the Holy Spirit
become Christ’s Body and Blood” (CCC 1333)
there have been several documented cases of a consecrated host transforming into a real
These phenomenon are known as Eucharistic miracles
Although the Church does not officially recognize Eucharistic miracles as part of its doctrine
it does not discourage the faithful from considering their authenticity as a matter of faith
Eucharistic miracles are usually initiated in one of four ways: a consecrated host is stolen
an attempt to desecrate a consecrated host is made
there is an avoidance of physical calamity to a consecrated host
meaning the host is miraculously spared from any disaster
a priest doubts the True Presence of Christ in the Eucharist
the initiating trigger of a Eucharistic miracle is a doubting priest,” Bernatchez said
The earliest recorded Eucharistic miracle is also the most famous
but doubted the True Presence of Christ in the Eucharist
The Eucharistic miracle that occurred in Lanciano
Italy in the 7th century is the earliest recorded Eucharistic miracle

The blood coagulated into five walnut-sized globules

Both the flesh and blood have remained perfectly preserved for twelve centuries and can be viewed in Lanciano to this day
a professor of anatomy and pathological history and former head of the Laboratory of Pathological Anatomy at the Hospital of Arezzo
to conduct a full scientific analysis of the sacred species
He studied the specimen for five months and presented his findings on March 4
He confirmed that the flesh and blood were of human origin
which he noted was “particular because it has the characteristics of a man who was born and lived in the Middle East regions.”
He concluded that the piece of flesh consisted of cardiac tissue; that is
The tissue contained within was consistent with that of myocardium
the vagus nerve and the left ventricle of the heart
Linoli published his findings in Italian medical publication Quaderni Scalvo di Diagnostica Clinica e di Laboratori in 1971
a scientific commission appointed by the Higher Council of the World Health Organization (WHO) was tasked with verifying Dr
and they confirmed his findings were indeed accurate
Various online sources said that the WHO published an extract of their research in December of 1976
stops in front of impossibility of giving an explanation.”
The Eucharistic miracle at Lanciano is but one of the 132 miracles documented within the Vatican Exhibition of Eucharistic Miracles of the World
Other famous Eucharistic miracles covered in the exhibit include one that occurred in Bolsena-Orvieto
in 1263 and another which occurred in Buenos Aires

JACKSON TWP. ‒ A new owner with plenty of catering and food industry experience has purchased Lanciano Wood-Fired Pizza.
whose parents own That Little Italian Kitchen
bought the specialty catering business from founder Scott Fehlman
wood-fired oven to bake fresh pizza and specialty breads
wedding receptions and other events for a dozen years
the business catered outdoor events from late March through early October
Schneider said she is lining up events for next year
Schneider has been involved with catering for several years at local businesses and with her parents' restaurant
Mike and Therese have operated That Little Italian Kitchen

The Schneiders and Fehlman knew each other through catering at the same events over the years
Fehlman let Therese Schneider know he was considering selling the business and a deal came together
Buying Lanciano is an opportunity as well as a "passion project," Christine Schneider said
"We love Italian food and this is a great addition."
Lanciano Wood-Fired Catering and the family restaurant will remain separate businesses
But Lanciano will be offering gelato from That Little Italian Kitchen kitchen on its menu
While Schneider might add a few items to the menu
no major changes are planned for the catering business
started the business after seeing a similar catering business operated by a Cleveland-area chef who his company's customer
observed his operation and was inspired to start his own
He named the business Lanciano in honor of his father-in-law
The business was something that Fehlman did on weekends and it helped put his children through college
He had intended to sell the business when he reached his mid-50s
and knew there was someone like Christine who could take it over and run with it
Fehlman said wood-fired pizza catering worked because it was something different from the usual catering fare

we had something happen,” Father Joseph Crowley told the congregation March 5 near the end of Mass at St
a parish once pastored by Knights of Columbus founder Blessed Michael McGivney
speaking to those at Mass and watching the parish’s livestream
“One of our eucharistic ministers was running out of hosts
Suddenly there were more hosts in the ciborium
God duplicated himself in the ciborium.”
“It just happened today,” he said
The alleged duplication of the Eucharist is under investigation by the Holy See’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith as a potential eucharistic miracle
it would join about 100 church-recognized eucharistic miracles
including a miracle in rural Honduras approved in July by Bishop Walter Guillén Soto of Gracias
Four others have been recognized in the 21st century
according to the California-based Magis Center
While some recognized Eucharistic miracles involve circumstances like multiplication
others involve the Eucharistic host taking on characteristics of blood or flesh
three such miracles — two in Poland and one in Mexico — have been recognized by bishops overseeing the dioceses where they occurred
a religious sister was distributing Communion at a retreat when a host she was holding appeared to begin to bleed
The host was given to a team of scientists to study
and their analysis reportedly found the reddish substance “corresponds to blood in which there are hemoglobin and DNA of human origin.”
a consecrated host the priest dropped during Communion was placed in water to dissolve
and it was locked in a safe in the sacristy
which she discovered to have a red stain on it
The host was removed from the water and as it dried
the stain ultimately appeared to look more like a wound
It was studied and found to include myocardial
tissue that was inexplicably interwoven with the bread fibers
A similar alleged miracle took place five years later across Poland in Legnica
A consecrated host that dropped on the floor was placed in water
Several research institutions examined the host
with the Department of Forensic Medicine in Szczecin stating the specimen contained “cross-striated muscle,” most similar to heart tissue that had undergone significant stress
Bishop Zbigniew Kiernikowski of Legnica approved the miracle for veneration in 2016
Honduran Bishop Soto confirmed an alleged miracle that occurred in a small rural parish with no resident priest
an extraordinary minister of holy Communion opened the parish’s tabernacle to remove the wooden ciborium containing the Eucharist and discovered dark stains on the corporal
The cloth was studied in October 2022 by a toxicology center in Tegucigalpa
and according to the news agency ACI Prensa
the stain was determined to be human blood of AB blood type with a positive Rh factor
“the scientific evidence and the notarized oaths of the witnesses were collected and sent to the Vatican for further investigation” at the request of apostolic nuncio in Honduras
the Lord chooses to manifest himself,” Bishop Soto told ACI Prensa
Eucharistic miracle experts also frequently point to two other alleged miracles — one in Buenos Aires in 1996
where a desecrated host left in water in the tabernacle to decompose reportedly turned to bloody tissue
where during Mass the consecrated body and blood of Christ became visibly flesh and blood
Both miracles have undergone scientific analysis
with results reportedly indicating the substance included human heart tissue
as archbishop of Buenos Aires initiated the investigation of the 1996 miracle
“The Lord passed and left his mark.”
especially those that have been scientifically studied
may inspire or bolster faith in people who need “a little bit of empirical verification” for the Real Presence
which includes information about eucharistic miracles among popular topics on its website
Father Spitzer said that “good lab tests” on alleged eucharistic miracles can help “convince a skeptical generation that’s scientifically clued-in” — particularly young people — that the Eucharist is truly Jesus’ body and blood
He said that kind of evidence is available in the lab reports from the miracles at Buenos Aires
“If you put together all the scientific data from those reports … it really forms a strong preponderance of evidence for authenticity — that human heart tissue from the region of the upper left ventricle
is growing out of the substance of the host
integrated with the consecrated host on the level of the thin filaments of the myofibrils
a few microns of separation,” he told OSV News
is on the Magis Center’s board of advisers and presents on the science behind the recognized 21st-century eucharistic miracles
He said those miracles show heart tissue and the presence of white blood cells
which do not ordinarily live outside of the body beyond 30 minutes
all scientifically studied eucharistic miracles indicate the presence of the rare AB blood group
the same blood group found on the Shroud of Turin
Part of French’s motivation is a 2019 Pew Research Center survey that found 69 percent of Catholics don’t believe in the Real Presence
“That’s why there’s all these eucharistic miracles: God is shouting it to us
And so that’s it: People need to hear it … particularly our youth,” he said
scientific queries have shown that visible changes to a consecrated host are natural
Paul and Minneapolis and in 2015 in the Diocese of Salt Lake City
biological analyses of consecrated hosts with red staining determined the cause to be fungus
which some skeptics say could be the cause of other alleged eucharistic miracles
Michael O’Neill — known as “The Miracle Hunter,” with a show by the same name on EWTN — said that when an alleged miracle occurs
the diocesan bishop may choose whether to investigate it
whether to approve the event as a miracle worthy of belief
where we must put in some faith to really believe a miracle is happening,” he told OSV News
“But when it comes to miracles that are the most scientifically testable
eucharistic miracles are remarkable and unique
because we can see a true miracle really happening
O’Neill is in the midst of a documentary project with interviews of experts and scientists who have studied the miracles at Lanciano
He said the project has special relevance for the National Eucharistic Revival
bishops underway to inspire greater understanding of and reverence for the Real Presence
The documentary — and O’Neill’s accompanying book — are expected to be available ahead of the 2024 National Eucharistic Congress
While eucharistic miracles have been getting more attention through the revival
including through the International Eucharistic Miracles of the World exhibit
a traveling exhibit of eucharistic miracles initially cataloged online by Blessed Carlo Acutis
they fall under the category of private revelation
and Catholics are not required to believe in them
He emphasized that the most important miracle is the miracle of transubstantiation that occurs at every Mass — the bread and wine becoming Jesus Christ in his body and blood
“That is the true miracle and that’s what Catholics are to believe — that’s a dogma of our faith,” O’Neill said
“When it comes to eucharistic miracles
we might say it’s a miracle on top of a miracle
It’s just a little bit of a bonus that God gives us
because it is the hardest of all Catholic beliefs — that God
would humble himself and make himself present to us in something that can be eaten.”
cautions people from basing their faith solely in these miracles
In the 2021 book “Behold It is I: Scripture
and Science on the Real Presence” that Trasancos co-wrote with Father George Elliott of the Diocese of Tyler
she examined the lab reports from analyses of the miracles at Lanciano and Buenos Aires
and she said their results were less conclusive than reported
“We’re Catholics and we’re after the truth,” Trasancos told OSV News
“We don’t have to make exaggerations
We don’t have to be ambiguous about the scientific data
We don’t have to be afraid of what the science might reveal.”
She said some oft-repeated narratives about some eucharistic miracles also aren’t accurate
such as a claim that a scientific commission appointed in 1973 by the World Health Organization conducted 500 tests on the Lanciano miracle and remained baffled by their results
author of the 2021 book “A Cardiologist Examines Jesus: The Stunning Science Behind Eucharistic Miracles,” who reviewed the supposed WHO report to discover it was actually data from tests of Egyptian mummies placed between two pages about the Lanciano miracle
If the church wants to promote the scientific basis for accepting eucharistic miracles
Trasancos advises the miracles be restudied with the same rigorous standards of proof and that scientists devise a standard set of procedures for the study of future reported miracles
If the results show that there are natural
“We don’t really need these miracles to be true in order for us to believe in the Real Presence,” she said
“Our faith in the real presence ought to be primarily based on our faith in Jesus Christ.”
Despite the weaknesses of individual tests
“seems to suggest that now we’re crossing a threshold where it’s not unreasonable
to believe that there really is living heart tissue growing out of these consecrated hosts.”
“It’s not ‘proof,” he said
“All we’re saying is there’s scientifically investigated evidence that supports probabilistic evidence — that is to say
it supports a reasonable and responsible belief.”

Rioja is one of the wine world’s great paradoxes: a region associated with blending that concurrently offers a plethora of single-estate wines
Bodegas LAN is the custodian of a very special climat (vineyard site) known as Viña Lanciano
Encompassing 72 hectares of world-class terroir
the estate is located on the border between Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa
Viña Lanciano’s northern boundary is marked by the Sierra de Cantabria mountain range
which forms a natural protection for the vines against the cooler winds and rain from the Atlantic
alluvial and gravel soils force the plants to bury their roots deep in search of nutrients to survive
The net result is slowly-ripened berries of exceptional quality; part of the Viña Lanciano estate is organically farmed
By avoiding synthetic pesticides and fertilisers
the winery aims to promote soil health and biodiversity while producing grapes that reflect the purest expression of the terroir
Bodegas LAN has also invested in renewable energy sources
This move towards clean energy not only reduces the winery’s dependence on non-renewable resources
After careful monitoring of individual plots
Garnacha and Mazuelo red varieties in late summer
only perfect bunches are selected – the rest are discarded
Yet vintage 2023 has been described as “exceptionally promising” – spring and early summer were characterised by moderate rainfall
which favours a balanced and healthy vine canopy
there was a warm and dry spell that allowed the grapes to develop concentrated aromas and sugars
encouraged balanced acidity and phenolic ripeness
A wine that reflects the majesty of its site with razor-sharp precision and focus; Viña Lanciano is a Rioja for our discerning age
From the 1st to the 6th of September 2022, the eighth edition of the International Architecture and Design Festival of Logroño
which invites us once a year to reflect on the urban environment and the city
it offers the opportunity to explore the city thinking about new collective uses that strengthen the character of community within public spaces
The festival called for three competitions and the calls involved the design of the pavilion in the Plaza Escuelas Trevijano as well as the interventions in Viña Lanciano (La Rioja
Portugal) and in Obispo Bustamante Street. A total of 446 entries were received
among which the jury defined three winners and decided to highlight a series of finalists due to the quality of the work achieved
The jury was composed of Iñaqui Carnicero, General Director of Urban Agenda and Architecture of the Ministry of Transport
Architecture and Design at Acción Cultural Española; Iker Gil
MAS Studio and MAS Context - Executive Director
Marketing Director of Bodegas LAN; Mafalda Guedes
Sustainability and Brand Manager at Sogrape; Ángel Carrero

"The project has been selected for its representative character, proposing a simple piece that enhances the existing elements in the Plaza Escuelas Trevijano. Its architecture, with an emphatic geometry, responds to the use of the pavilion as a landmark of the festival. Its implantation in the location is relevant, proposing a unique strategy in which the tree is integrated and reread in its context."
Interventions in Viña Lanciano + Quinta do Seixo
"The project has been selected for its uniqueness and domestic character in dialogue with the landscape. Its large scale, combined with lightness in its formalisation, incorporates multiple views of the territory. This monumentality in its exterior vision gives rise to small spaces that complete the intervention and its relationship with the context in which it is located."

Its objective is to accommodate all kinds of situations
being the meeting point of its communities. It is conceived to fulfil several functions such as: to extend the playful space experienced in the neighbourhood courtyard towards Obispo Bustamante street and create a compression of the public space, to invite the passer-by to enter the inner courtyard and enjoy an intimate space in the centre of the city of Logroño and
promote the development of activities such as popular meals
etc. It is understood as an organism that the neighbours will conquer.
"The project has been selected for its iconic and suggestive character that changes our usual perspective on the relationship between the street
the inner courtyard and the city. A continuous structure that gains strength through its symbolism and versatility
integrating public and private space through its performance
it proposes us to remain and refers us to the imaginary of the domestic."

When Browns opened its new flagship store along London’s Brook Street in April, the fashion retailer also unveiled its very first branded restaurant. Native at Browns serves miso fish soup, fermented potato waffles and caramelised honey and seaweed truffles, among other dishes. It also serves up something more valuable to Browns: foot traffic.
After a year in which the pandemic forced everyone into isolation, “people want to talk more face to face”, says Paul Brennan, Browns’ managing director. The restaurant is designed to tap into that desire, with the expectation that visitors will also shop. Indeed, the restaurant has accounted for a third of visitors across the store in the first two months of opening.
Fashion retail is betting heavily on onsite restaurants to attract visitors who may be tired of shopping online or who are looking for more of an experience than simply making a purchase as the world reemerges from pandemic lockdowns

DOVER — A city man has been indicted on five charges connecting him with a string of burglaries which occurred last July
allegedly entered Quick to Go at 547 Central Ave
He then disposed of the lottery tickets by distributing them to another person
he has been indicted on Class B felony charges of burglary and receiving stolen property
Each of the charges could earn him 3½ to 7 years in prison and a $4,000 fine
Police said in May that Lanciano worked with Timothy Staples
in Newmarket during the Quick to Go burglary
Lanciano and Staples allegedly entered a locked shed at 39 New Rochester Road and stole tools belonging to the residents
Lanciano was indicted on charges of accomplice to burglary and accomplice to receiving stolen property for that crime
Both of those charges are also Class B felonies which carry a penalty of 3½ to 7 years in prison and a fine of $4,000
The grand jury at Strafford County Superior Court indicted Lanciano on one final charge of burglary during its July session
Prosecutors claim Lanciano entered Gold Rush Coin and Jewelry at 590 Central Ave
He was charged with his fifth Class B felony as a result of the commission of this crime
the city woman said Lanciano suffers from attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and is bipolar
An indictment is not an indication of guilt; rather it means a grand jury believed there was sufficient evidence to warrant a trial

After graduating with a master's degree in journalism
he has worked for both print and online publications and is particularly interested in TV
teen dramas from the '90s and prefers tea over coffee
A dad who was given weeks to live after being diagnosed with a brain tumour survived for more than two years and his wife believes it's all due to the use of cannabis oil
Dad-of-two Neil Lanciano, 46, was informed he had glioblastoma (GBM) in April 2020. The paint shop manager, from Innsworth Gloucester, had surgery and doctors at Southmead Hospital in Bristol were able to remove 94 per cent of his tumour
which left him with partial paralysis and speech difficulties
doctors discovered the tumour had returned to its full size and was growing
Tragically, further scans revealed smaller tumours had developed in other areas on Lanciano’s brain and gruelling chemotherapy and radiotherapy failed to help
Doctors ended his treatment as further surgery was considered too dangerous and Lanciano was told he only had a few weeks to live
‘Compelled’ to do something to improve her husband’s chances
"I was desperate to give Neil some kind of quality of life, for his sake and so he could be here a bit longer to watch our teenage daughters, Abbie and Emily, grow up,” the playgroup manager told The Mirror.
Cannabis oil is a Class B drug
making it illegal in the UK due to its THC levels
Hayley paid £16,000 to purchase the drugs online over a two-year period
with the money sourced from mortgage payments
Lanciano would use two bottles of the drugs each months and he defied the expectations of his doctors by living a further two years after his NHS treatment came to an end
a scan revealed that the small scatter of tumours on Lanciano’s brain had disappeared completely although the bigger tumour remained
His wife believes his prolonged survival was due to cannabis oil
She explained: “His healthcare team said Neil was a 'miracle case' which they couldn't explain
"Neil had no other treatment and the only explanation I can think of is that the combination of cannabis oil and regular exercise played a big and positive part in Neil's journey
"Without our critical illness cover we wouldn't have financially been able to afford for the £712 month payment for the oil
He used the oil for 24 months and it cost us around £16,000 in total
"Neil survived more than two years after he stopped all radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment."
Lanciano stopped taking the drugs when he was ‘in the final stages of his life’
Lanciano’s family has raised more than £5,000 for the Brain Tumour Research charity
Only 12 per cent of people diagnosed with a brain tumour live beyond five years
compared to an average of 54 percent across all cancers
Cancer Research UK says research is currently underway to see if the substances in cannabis might help treat cancer

The Grubb family were excited when runner Angi Lanciano decided to bring Ainsley's Angels to East Tennessee
Ainsley's Angels offers the opportunity for anybody with any kind of disability to 'roll with the wind,' according to Lanciano
The Ainsley's Angels team is made up of an 'Angel Rider' athlete such as Jacob; the 'Angel Runner,' who pushes the athlete rider; and 'Guardian Angels' who volunteer to assist the runners

The Hoyt running chairs were designed for a father-and-son team running the Boston Marathon and over 1,000 other races together
and have been pioneers in inclusion running
Ainsley's Angels reached out to Threds in Knoxville to purchase their third chair
The company also prints the logos for the group
The Grainger Foundation contributed $5,000 for the Axiom chair
they also have a Crowdrise online fundraising page
Lanciano points out that the organization is 100 percent volunteer run
'No one gets paid from the president all the way down to the Guardian Angel volunteers,' she said

'Now that we have three freedom chairs and an Axiom chair
we are trying to fundraise for a trailer to carry the equipment in,' said Lanciano
Jenna Karakatsanis was paralyzed almost two years ago and rode in East Tennessee's first Axiom chair for adult riders during the Team Faith 5K in Maryville
'It's important that it brings awareness,' she said of Ainsley's Angels
'I drive and I'm pretty independent; this group shows there aren't any limitations.' Jennifer Torregiano

Right now they are $300 from their goal to raise money for two additional Freedom Chairs when they participate in Ainsley's Angels #RunWithTheMarines at the Marine Corps Marathon in October
Four-year-old Cameron Bush also participated in the 5K
He was diagnosed with epilepsy when he was nine months old and
'He enjoys the wind in his face,' said his dad
who also takes his son hiking in a backpack
but he'll take your hand and lead you out to the garage where we keep the chair
'I started running two years ago to bring awareness,' said Brian Bush of their motivation to run
'Now my wife and my other six-year-old son run as well.'
Lanciano has also seen riders with spina bifida
high-functioning autistic children who can run but not on their own
but also on their own two feet with Angel runners,' she said
'We have the hashtags #togetherweshall and our other slogan #rollwiththewind
Our main message is inclusion in all aspects of life
Anyone should be able to do whatever they want to in life
We supply the equipment and the legs necessary to do that.'
'We have been pretty good with getting enough runners for the riders that we have,' said Lanciano
'But we're always looking for more riders.'
The new East Tennessee chapter averages one to two races per month
'So we can have more riders enjoy the feel of the wind in their faces,' said Lanciano

- Amanda Lanciano's winning volley in the second-set tiebreaker did more than close out her match and clinch the Tournament of Champions title
It also allowed the Haddonfield junior to act like a professional tennis player
"I was caught up in the moment," Lanciano said
"You always watch tennis on TV and you see them drop the racket and put their arms up
and you never think that you would be able to do that someday."
Lanciano dropped her racket and thrust both arms in the air after her victory at second singles secured Haddonfield's 3-2 triumph over Millburn on Wednesday in the Tournament of Champions final
Dominant singles play was the difference as Haddonfield (33-0)
capped a perfect season with a narrow victory over the Group 4 state champion on the indoor courts at the Garden State Tennis Center
"It was not the usual Haddonfield formula," Haddonfield coach Jeff Holman said
"Our formula is usually to try to win doubles and steal a point in singles
But this is the most dominant singles lineup we've ever had
Haddonfield also won the T of C title in 1980
"It's awesome - I couldn't wish for anything more," Ng said
Lanciano won the first set against Millburn's Lauren Cohen
With Millburn on its way to sweeping doubles play
She clinched the Haddonfield victory by winning the tiebreaker
Doubles: Patricia Chau and Stephanie Chen-Schmidt
Ivan Basso (CSC) has made his first big move in this year's Giro
winning the eighth stage between Civitanova Marche and Maielletta Passo Lanciano
Basso countered a move by Damiano Cunego in the last four kilometres of the final 12.3 km climb
and finished with a 30 second advantage on Lampre's 'Little Prince'
while the rest of the favourites lost between one and three minutes: Simoni lost 1'15
The general classification shows some big time gaps for the first time
and all of the top GC riders will have to rely on Basso having a bad day to get that time back
The stage was run at a very fast average speed of just under 42 km/h
A break of 14 riders escaped on the flat after 54 km
with Marzio Bruseghin (Lampre-Fondital) the best placed on GC at 3'46
The breakaways were never given that much room by the bunch
and the gap was only 50 seconds once the foot of the final climb was reached
until the bunch blew to bits under the impulse of CSC and Saunier Duval
but when the real attacking started with 5 km to go

Balzan FC youngster Juan Carlos Corbalan has joined Virtus Lanciano
the Premier League club announced yesterday
Coaches from Lanciano’s youth sector visited Balzan FC late last year to have a look at the club’s young prospects after which Corbalan
the son of former Ħamrun Spartans and Marsa player Miguel Corbalan
was invited for a one-week trial with the Italian Serie B club
“Juan’s move is the beginning of a long-term relationship that will see the two clubs co-operating on a number of levels,” Balzan FC said in a statement
“We are all delighted that Juan has been given the chance to prove himself with the Primavera (U-19) squad of Lanciano for the next six months,” Anton Tagliaferro
“Juan is a very promising and dedicated player and hopefully this move will lead him to achieve his dream of pursuing a professional football career
“These are the sort of opportunities we will be providing to all of our ambitious players in the future
“I would like to personally thank Oliver Spiteri (first-team coach) for establishing this relationship with Lanciano.”
director of the Balzan FC Academy added: “Juan’s move to a professional Italian team is a clear sign that the fantastic work being carried out at the Balzan Academy by Ludvic Bartolo and all our coaches is beginning to bear fruit
“We are sure that our relationship with Lanciano
as well as other connections we have with the likes of the Milan Soccer School and Prato FC
will benefit many more boys from our Academy in the coming years.”
Premier League leaders Hibernians are currently giving a trial to US forward Gustavo Villalobos
who last season was on the books of Swedish club FC Ange
Coach Branko Nisevic is expected to take a decision on whether to offer a contract to the 23-year-old today
Valletta are set to have Nigerian defender Hilary Ikenna available for Sunday’s Premier League match against Balzan
The Nigerian reached an agreement with the Citizens last week but his registration was finally completed yesterday after the MFA received Ikenna’s clearance
