National retailer Menards agreed to pay $4 million for Springfield Public Schools' former Hickory Hills property on Chestnut Expressway
it will mark the Wisconsin company's first foray into the Springfield shopping landscape
The chain sells groceries and home improvement items
The district announced the deal Tuesday afternoon
although the school board approved it during closed session in mid-August and both parties recently signed the contract
notes a 180-day "due diligence" period for Menards to evaluate the property
The company is expected to pay cash upon closing
"Menards has expressed interest in the property and has continued to be interested," said board president Denise Fredrick
"That interest is one of the reasons we are confident that after 'due diligence' it will be a done deal and we'll move forward."
which has nearly 300 stores primarily in the Midwest
whose contract to buy the former school property ultimately fell through
had been in talks with Menards to place a 162,000-square-foot store
that Menards balked at being part of a special taxing district for commercial development
which was an integral part of the public financing that Larino was trying to pull together
Menards remained fairly tight-lipped Tuesday
opting to respond to a series of questions with just one statement from spokesman Jeff Abbott: "We hope to build a new Menards store in Springfield
although no final decisions have been made
We're still working through the initial approval processes and no official time line has been established just yet."
The signed contract will require Menards to put down $10,000 down and the rest to "be paid in cash" at closing
Missouri is home to at least nine other Menards stores and locations include Jefferson City
became the latest to walk away from a publicly announced deal
which involved numerous public entities and landowners
appeared to collapse under the weight of its complexity
The district agreed to numerous contract extensions while Larino tried to finalize the details and secure financing
Larino walked away but not before demolishing the aging 102,000-square foot school building and completing some preliminary site work to the property
the district decided to make a fresh attempt to sell the property and searched for a real estate broker
that successful rezoning of property in that corridor and a planned overhaul of the U.S
65 and Chestnut Expressway interchange — plus future plans to relocate Eastgate Avenue — would correct many of the safety and congestion problems and make the area more appealing to a buyer
which they believe contributed to the lack of a completed sale
citing traffic congestion and safety concerns
the district announced plans to sell the 15-acre property
and routes in and out of the property clogged a nearby interchange
"Now we are the point that we have a financially sound national retailer
The district moved ahead with plans to relocate the elementary and middle school and opened a newly constructed Hickory Hills at 4650 E
Fredrick said once the Menards deal is finalized
the board will have to decide how to spend the proceeds
"We haven't had that discussion yet," she said
"We just know there's a lot of things we can do for kids with that amount of money."

QUEENS — An elderly SUV driver fatally struck a Queens mom in an Astoria street last week
was crossing near 21st Street and Astoria Park South about 10 p.m
Friday when she was struck by the 73-year-old woman's 2005 Honda Element
The Honda driver was making a turn when she hit Larino
who was crossing the street outside the crosswalk
Medics rushed Larino to Elmhurst Hospital but doctors couldn't save her life
The elderly driver stayed at the scene and wasn't hurt in the crash
Larino, a mother of one, was a longtime MTA Bus worker who worked as an assistant stock worker at the LaGuardia Depot, according to the Transport Workers Union
The Queens mom is survived by her 20-year-old daughter Olivia
Renowned Italian photographer Paolo Di Paolo — who captured the glamor of postwar Italy with his camera — has died at the age of 98
The photographer passed away in his hometown of Larino in Italy on Monday — with his daughter Silvia Di Paolo confirming that he had “arrived at the end of his extraordinary life and left us this morning.”
— MAXXI (@Museo_MAXXI) June 12, 2023
Di Paolo is considered one of Italy’s greatest reportage photographers
shooting the country amid huge social change as it emerged from fascism in the 1950s to the mid-1960s
much of his huge image archive remained unseen until a chance discovery by his daughter Silvia as she was searching for skis in a family cellar about twenty years ago
she stumbled upon a cache of over 250,000 photo negatives
who was by then a professor of history and philosophy
about the photos he was initially reluctant to discuss them

Di Paolo admitted that the photographs — which included black-and-white portraits of Brigitte Bardot
and Marcello Mastroianni — were all taken by him
Although his artistic abilities initially leaned toward painting
he soon moved toward photography and become one of the country’s top photographers

— Angelø (@mr5miiths) June 12, 2023
Di Paolo documented key figures of Italy’s post-war cultural renaissance for the now-defunct Il Mondo weekly magazine for over 14 years
According to WWD
some of his most famous images included Italian poet and film director Pier Paolo Pasolini portrayed on the outskirts of Rome
the encounter between actress Gina Lollobrigida and artist Giorgio de Chirico
and Anna Magnani sunbathing in her villa outside Rome
a photo editor asked Di Paolo to bring in “some spice” to his images — a byword for a more aggressive style of the paparazzo
Di Paolo refused to partake in the more scandalous photojournalism of the increasingly prevalent paparazzi and hung up his Leica camera for good
placed 250,000 of his images in the basement
and served as art director of the carabinieri
Italy’s regional police force for the next 40 years
It was not until his daughter Silvia’s accidentally exhumed her father’s photographs in the family’s cellar years later that Di Paolo’s work was revisited
when instead of a pair of skis I was looking for in my parents’ home
I found these photos made by my father?” Silvia recalls
“It took more than twenty years to convince him to show these photos to the world.”
Valentino’s creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli invited Di Paolo to Paris to photograph behind-the-scenes at the brand’s fashion show
renowned photographer and filmmaker Bruce Weber explored di Paolo’s life and work in a documentary entitled The Treasure of His Youth: The Photographs of Paolo di Paolo
