The New York Yankees fired back at a Little League coach who complained that his team didn't get face time with Aaron Judge at the Little League Classic in Williamsport
Bob Laterza, coach of the Staten Island team, told SILive.com that Judge failed to acknowledge his players during the Yankees' game against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday
“How about turning around or wave to New York and the kids that think you’re a hero?" Laterza bemoaned
Laterza also was upset that Judge didn't show up specifically to greet his New York-based team
coaches and alumni getting with his players for one-on-one time
“Maybe he’ll want to make up for it and come and see them.”
The Yankees weren't too pleased with the coach's public outburst
releasing a blistering statement that pushed back on Laterza's claims:
we intend to invite them to Yankee Stadium
it would have been much better if Staten Island’s coach called us to understand the facts before bitterly reacting in such a public fashion
Reaching out to us would have been the prudent way to act and would have set a fine example for his young players
Aaron Judge always acts with kindness and respect.”
Laterza's team was eliminated from the Little League World Series with a loss on Tuesday
Judge and Yankees manager Aaron Boone were asked about Laterza's comments on Wednesday and chose not to engage
“I’ve got no response for that,” Judge told reporters
Said Boone: “I’m not even going to dignify that with a response
Aaron Judge is as good as it gets with everyone.”
Judge interacted with kids and took selfies on the field before the Yankees' game and spent time in the crowd at one of the LLWS games
The 2022 AL MVP has been known throughout his career as a star who interacts plenty with fans and signs autographs
“We commend all of our players for devoting their complete attention to the hundreds of kids who literally walked step-by-step alongside them from the moment the Yankees landed in Williamsport through the entirety of the evening," the Yankees said in the statement
"Our players were unequivocally committed to making the experience what it was intended to be – a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for young baseball players and their families from around the world to have meaningful and genuine interaction with some of Major League Baseball’s greatest players.”
who has been coaching Little League for over 30 years
has also used his week in the spotlight to dig up a LLWS controversy from 2001 – the age scandal involving pitcher Danny Almonte
Laterza's squad lost 13-0 against Almonte's Bronx-based team in sectionals ahead of that year's LLWS
The coach claims that he had tried to blow the whistle earlier on the player who turned out to be 14
as uncovered by a later Sports Illustrated investigation
“I went to everyone,” Laterza told PennLive

Aaron Judge didn't visit with the team from Staten Island or even turn around to acknowledge them behind home plate during his at-bats so
South Shore Little League skipper Bob Laterza unloaded to the Staten Island Advance about the slight in the type of dispatch one rarely reads from one of the happier places on Earth.
While Yankees players DJ LeMahieu and Tim Hill showed up -- not many others did. Laterza noted that Yankees stars Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes and Jasson Dominguez, as well as manager Aaron Boone and former outfielder Nick Swisher, met with the team later on at Bowman Field, but there was still one notable omission, in particular.
Where’s Aaron Judge? The Yankees, of course, are in the thick of a pennant race and had a game to play that night, but that was of little consolation to the youngsters.
Laterza admitted his boys were bummed to miss out on the big man, who he alleges never showed face with his team, despite being seen with others. They had hoped that their seats behind home plate would allow them an interaction with him in the on-deck circle, but Laterza says No. 99 ignored the youths bellowing his name from some 10 to 20 feet away.
That's a tough break for those kids. Judge may be the biggest star in baseball and no team would have gotten more out of the experience. Then again he and every other player there spent most of their day in rural Pennsylvania trying to give everyone a piece of their time and it seems impossible to please everyone.
Laterza also offered up this strange take on the economic dynamics at play.
“How about turning around or wave to New York and the kids that think you’re a hero?” chimed Laterza. “They are the ones who pay your salary.”
“They were disappointed,” he added. “Maybe he’ll want to make up for it and come and see them.”

NEW YORK CITY (TND) — A New York Little League coach on Monday accused Yankees star outfielder Aaron Judge of ignoring his team during the MLB Little League Classic
played during the Little League World Series
is intended to excite young players about the game of baseball
The Yankees lost this year’s matchup 3-2 to the Detroit Tigers
The team also apparently lost the respect of South Shore Little League coach Bob Laterza
who claimed Judge went out of his way to dodge interactions with his players
Judge neither appeared during a Yankees visit to the team’s hotel nor acknowledged the cheering kids who sat behind home plate during the game
Members of the Yankees who took time to sign autographs
were “very kind and considerate,” Laterza noted
Evidence circulating social media Tuesday appears to contradict Laterza’s claims
One clip shows Judge greeting a crowd of enthusiastic fans and signing an autograph
Another image appears to show Judge seated near a Little League player on a bus
Judge’s agent could not be reached for comment
The New York Yankees did not immediately reply to a request for comment

He bleeds it and will fight tooth and nail to get what he feels he's deserved to represent his borough the right way
It almost seems like his character was written for an old SNL skit as someone who would bully Pete Davidson
Bob's little league squad has made a nice run at the LLWS and is positioned to do big things in Williamsport
and by that I mean Rico was counting down their outs on Twitter the other day
With the Yankees in town yesterday to face the Tigers
Coach Laterza was looking forward to his boys meeting their idols before Sunday Night Baseball got going
This article reads like something straight out of The Onion
To a degree I get his frustration. You're told your meeting the Yankees and instead you get the corpse of DJ LeMahieu and lefty reliever Tim Hill, who could easily pass as a guy who runs a gas station in a Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie. Later on though, they did link up with Cole, Nestor, Jasson Dominguez, and Boone. Sounds like a sick day to be a kid if you ask me.
I'm aware Gerrit Cole isn't Aaron Judge, but come on that's awesome. Not enough for Laterza however. He was furious Aaron Judge wasn't there before the game and that he didn't turn around mid-game to interact with the team. The coach reminded us that these are the kids who pay his salary, simultaneously revealing his players are being put through illegal child labor. They start em' young over there.
“How about turning around or wave to New York and the kids that think you’re a hero?” chimed Laterza. “They are the ones who pay your salary. They were disappointed,” he added. “Maybe he’ll want to make up for it and come and see them.”
People forget without Staten Island Little League there's no $360M contract for the Yankees' captain. I'm curious, are these children willing to shell out some cash for Soto as well? Asking for a friend.
While Laterza wants to paint Judge as a war criminal, I'm here to report Judge was out there hanging with the kids, just not Staten Island's unfortunately.
Seems like this tyrant's anger is misplaced. Shift that hate towards whatever little league official promised you Judge and botched where he was going to be. Seems like plenty of kids got to hang with 99.
The best part of this Laterza tirade came when he didn't recognize David Cone.
“He says ‘hey coach Bob, how you doing’? I didn’t know who he was, he knew who I was,” laughed Laterza. “He’s a nice man. Out of place, out of mind, I was like who are you?”
Guy had no time for Conie. Might as well have been the groundskeeper. Keep it movin' fella, we're here for the big guy.
P.S. Judge is definitely going to do something really nice for these kids now so I guess this maniac coach is going to end up being a hero.
Laterza is the coach of the South Shore Little League team from Staten Island
NY that earned the Mid-Atlantic bid to the Little League World Series in Williamsport this year
Although the South Shore run ended with a 6-1 loss Tuesday
as well as 19 other teams from all across the United States and internationally
had the opportunity to meet Yankees and Detroit Tigers players Sunday prior to the game
Judge was excluded from the short list and was the subject of Laterza’s commentary
"How about turning around or [waving] to New York and the kids that think you're a hero
They are the ones who pay your salary."
The Yankees organization issued a statement Wednesday responding to Laterza
Yankees fire back at South Shore coach Bob Laterza 💪What are your thoughts? #RepBX pic.twitter.com/GEnsE0ukee
In addition to the Yankees official statement
which defended their star by including "Aaron Judge always acts with kindness and respect
The coach could learn a lot from him," Judge was asked about Laterza’s comments prior to New York’s game against the Cleveland Guardians
Judge acknowledged the event Sunday was about the kids
players had an opportunity to spend time with kids at Williamsport
Aaron Judge on Little League coach Bob Laterza:"I'm not gonna give him a response because it's about the kids. This is what it's all about. We got a chance to spend a lot of time with quite a few kids in Williamsport, make some great memories." #Yankees https://t.co/Vp569ZnrJr
Manager Aaron Boone also chimed in on Laterza’s comments about Judge
let his non-commentary about the situation do the talking regarding the situation
“I’m not even gonna dignify that with a response,” Aaron Boone said of Bob Laterza’s comments on Aaron Judge.Added Judge: "I play in front of 40,000 every single night & I get booed if I go 0-1. So I’m not really gonna put any weight into that.” #Yankeeshttps://t.co/9P7wn0cSJk
Whether Laterza was more focused on cashing in on 15 minutes of fame or sticking up for his players
which typically diffuses most of these types of situations with class
plans on having the South Shore boys attend a game soon following their elimination from the United States bracket
Although there are a few Mets fans on the team
a night out at the ballpark seeing Judge and his teammates is a part of a nice consolation for a terrific run
he collected two more hits Wednesday in an 8-1 victory – a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning and solo homer in the seventh
He leads Major League Baseball in virtually every major statistical category
except batting average (Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr
The Yankees temporarily retake the top spot in the American League with a matinee on deck Thursday against Cleveland
and are tied with the Philadelphia Phillies for second in the majors in wins (74)
I’m sure Judge will be happy to spend some extra time with the South Shore Little Leaguers when they visit Yankee Stadium before the end of the summer

Staten Island’s Little League baseball team was sent packing on Tuesday after losing 6-1 to Lake Mary, Florida – ending their run in this year’s World Series.
The South Shore squad’s defeat followed a weekend of victories
They beat the Midwest Region team on Saturday and the Great Lakes Region team on Sunday
“It was a great run that we had,” Staten Island coach Bob Laterza said during a postgame press conference. “Not everybody’s gonna win
but as long as they fight to the end I don’t have a problem
“It’s only with the help of God that I got here
there’s a lot of things that could go wrong – you don't get the team
you run into a buzz saw like the Danny Almonte team
somebody gets an injury,” he said at the press conference
Laterza said he briefed the kids on “the downs and the ups” that await them when they get home
The 38-game tournament will culminate in a championship game between the eventual winners of the American and international brackets, which is slated for Aug. 25.

The human developmental processes during the early post-implantation stage instruct the specification and organization of the lineage progenitors into a body plan
and establishment of the three germ layers
have been classically studied in non-human model organisms and only recently
Micropatterning technology has unveiled mechanisms during patterning and germ layer specification; however
cell sorting and their segregation in specific germ layer combinations have not been investigated yet in a human-specific in vitro system
we developed an in vitro model of human ectodermal patterning
in which human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) self-organize to form a radially regionalized neural and non-central nervous system (CNS) ectoderm
We showed that by using micropatterning technology and by modulating BMP and WNT signals
we can regulate the appearance and spatial distribution of the different ectodermal populations
This pre-patterned ectoderm can be used to investigate the cell sorting behavior of hPSC-derived meso-endoderm cells
with an endoderm that segregates from the neural ectoderm
the combination of micro-technology with germ layer cross-mixing enables the study of cell sorting of different germ layers in a human context
Several micropatterning techniques have been developed for studies in which the cell colony geometry needs to be controlled. Among these, the photo-patterning method allows the ad hoc formation of cell adhesive regions with defined shape and size on a glass surface by the spatially controlled exposure of photosensitive materials to UV light (between 200–385 nm) through a photomask with defined micro-features (Théry and Piel, 2009)
the authors did not investigate the ability of human-derived cells to spatially segregate within pre-patterned structures
nor analyzed the different behavior of single lineages within the ectoderm germ layer
we adapted the 2D micropatterned ectoderm culture and validated the cell sorting ability of meso-endoderm lineages when co-seeded onto a radial pre-patterned ectoderm derived from hPSCs
We first performed ectoderm patterning since it is an epithelial tissue and thus needs to form its correct tissue packing and apical/basal/lateral geometry as a community
we showed the ability of geometrical confinement to induce the formation of a radially regionalized neural and non-central nervous system (CNS) ectoderm
and that the spatial distribution of these regions was dependent on the signals provided in the culture
we seeded mesendoderm cells on top since they are of non-epithelial
motile mesenchymal lineage and showed that the pre-patterned ectoderm can guide the cell sorting behavior of hPSC-derived meso-endoderm cells
the endoderm tends to segregate from the neural ectoderm and preferentially localizes in non-CNS ectoderm regions
whereas the mesoderm shows a more spread localization within micropatterns
we demonstrate the possibility of using this micropatterning tool as a model to study dynamic organizational processes such as tissue sorting
and cell migration on top of a defined base of distinct identity domains
this study shows that by modulating the signaling molecules provided to geometrically confined hPSCs
we can perturb the ectoderm micropattern formation and that the micropattern system can be used to study the interaction and cell sorting properties of different germ layers

(E–H) Schematic representation of six different combinations of signaling molecules (TGFb inhibitors; BMP inhibitors; and WNT inhibitors) and basal media within 5 days of the experiment

Thus, not only the temporally controlled perturbation of BMP and WNT signaling via specific inhibitors but also the stimuli contained within the basal media, among which BMP (secreted by MEFs or present in the KSR of DMEM) (Xu et al., 2005) could play a major role in defining the presence and spatial distribution of different fates within the ectoderm lineage
the meso-endoderm was derived from a GFP-expressing hPSC line
We used a published protocol to generate a homogeneous meso-endoderm layer of cells in 48 h (Supplementary Figure S1A) (Giobbe et al., 2015) and confirmed the prevalence of the mesoderm marker T/Brachyury at 24 h of differentiation and the endoderm marker SOX17 at 48 h of differentiation (Supplementary Figures S1B,C)

During in vivo development, the ectoderm and endoderm are spatially separated by the presence of the mesoderm (Solnica-Krezel and Sepich, 2012). Human gastruloids dissociated and reseeded on micropatterns showed the ability to self-organize in segregated cell clusters with ectodermal cells more associated with the mesoderm and completely segregated from the endoderm, probably through selective cadherin expression (Minn et al., 2020)
we tested whether the mesoderm (T/Brachyury+) and the endoderm (SOX17+) populations show a differential distribution on ectoderm patterns (condition n2) after 3 days of co-culture
We found that both GFP + SOX17 + endoderm and GFP + T/Brachyury + cells preferentially clustered at the edges of the areas of micropatterns occupied by the non-CNS ectoderm (Figure 4A), and GFP + T/Brachyury + cells partially overlapped with regions covered by the neural ectoderm as previously observed (Fagotto, 2014) (Figure 4B)

and Nestin (purple) to mark the neural ectoderm (A)
or coupled with PAX6 (red) to mark the neural ectoderm and Brachyury (purple) to mark the mesoderm (B)
Given the high proliferation state of the neural ectoderm
the high rate of cell death observed during neural ectoderm commitment and the effect of cell density on the specification of the CNS and the non-CNS ectoderm
future time-lapse experiments could help in following better the dynamics of spatial patterning shaping
we leveraged our in vitro system to dissect the selective cell-sorting behavior of human meso-endoderm cells once seeded onto the pre-patterned ectoderm
Cell sorting has been widely described in vivo and in vitro in different model systems as a crucial mechanism to ensure germ layer boundary formation (Krens and Heisenberg, 2011) and has also been described in human blastocyst-like structures and gastruloids in vitro (Shahbazi and Zernicka-Goetz, 2018; Minn et al., 2020)
the ability of single or multiple human germ layers to self-organize onto already pre-patterned structures has never been investigated before
Our work provides proof-of-principle that the sophisticated control of lineage location with micropatterns allows us to study the simultaneous interaction between multiple human lineages at the same time
in a spatially defined and reproducible manner
This provides a framework for future studies that aim to address specific events and interactions occurring during human embryogenesis
We envision that the integration of micropatterning technology with microfluidics could allow the generation of dynamic gradients of factors
giving the possibility to dissect the contribution of endogenous and exogenous factors in symmetry breaking within embryonic layers
it would be interesting to study how symmetry breaking would affect the cell sorting properties of different germ layers
A 12-mm diameter glass coverslip was pre-treated with a plasma cleaner machine (Harrick Plasma) for 3 min (3 × 10−1 mbar) to oxidize the surface
Then 3–4 drops of solution A (10 μl of 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate
and 50 μl acetic acid) were added onto the plasma-treated surface
After 3 min of incubation at room temperature
the coverslip was washed with ethanol two times and then let dry
A photo-patterning solution (solution B) was prepared right before use: 100 μl 20mg/100 μl IRGACURE 2959 (Ciba Specialty Chemicals) in methanol was diluted in 900 μl 8% (w/v) acrylamide (Sigma
50 mM HEPES) and degassed for 20 min
Ten μl solution B was applied onto a 12-mm glass coverslip covered by a photo-mask and exposed for 40 s to UV irradiation with a distance of 5.5 cm between the glass coverslip and UV source
A functionalized glass coverslip was then washed with deionized water two times and stored at room temperature until use
In the case of micropatterning within microfluidic devices
a thick standard slide for microscopy was used and micropatterns were generated in correspondence with the areas that have been then covered by the microchannels
the micropatterned glass coverslips were pre-coated with 50 μg/m Poly-L-lysin (Sigma) for 2 h at room temperature and 1% Matrigel overnight at 4°C
A washing procedure with MilliQ water and DPBS was performed after each coating
The glass coverslips were stored in the last wash solution at 4°C
the glass coverslips should be used within 2 weeks
All experiments were performed with the H9 ESCs cell line
H9 ESCs were cultured in a StemMACSTM iPS-Brew XF pluripotent stem cell medium and passaged 1:5 to 1:10 every 3–5 days via EDTA dissociation
Culture plates were coated with 0.5% Matrigel (Corning) and incubated at room temperature for at least 2 h
Coated plates were stored at 4°C and pre-warmed at 37°C immediately before use
the micropatterns were washed twice with pre-warmed PBS to remove cells attached outside the micropatterns and the medium was replaced with an ectoderm induction medium containing a different combination of small molecules and was changed daily
Three different basal media were used to induce ectoderm differentiation
1) The DMEM differentiation basal medium containing DMEM/F12 (GIBCO)
and 50 μM β-mercaptoethanol (GIBCO)
2) The MEF-CM differentiation basal medium
3) N2B27 medium basal medium containing 25 ml DMEM/F12 medium
and 50 μM β-mercaptoethanol
the basal media were supplemented with different small molecules’ cocktail:
and 2 μM dorsomorphin (Sigma) named APD
(2) 10 μM SB431542 (Stemgent) and 100 nM LDN193189 (Sigma) named SB + LDN
H9 hESCs were seeded at high density as a single-cell onto Matrigel-coated Petri dishes
Upon attaining 90% confluence (usually the day after seeding)
the medium was switched to MEF-CM supplemented with 1) 2 μM A83-01 (Tocris)
and 2 μM dorsomorphin (Sigma) or 2) 10 μM SB431542 (Stemgent) and 100 nM LDN193189 (Sigma)
Cells were fed daily and maintained till day 5 to evaluate the efficiency of neural induction
Meso-endoderm differentiation was induced in a 6-well Petri dish
H9 hESCs were seeded (1:5 passage) onto a 2.5% Matrigel-coated plate as clumps
When the cells reached 30–50% confluence (usually the day after split)
the meso-endoderm induction was initiated by replacing the expansion medium with an induction medium comprising RPMI 1640 (GIBCO)
and 1 × MEM NEAA (GIBCO) supplemented with 100 ng/ml Activin A (R&D)
and 3 μM CHIR99021 (Miltenyi Biotech)
Micropatterned neuroectoderm cell fate was induced as described previously after 5 days of cell differentiation
Meso-endoderm cell induction was initiated on day 3 of neuroectoderm differentiation to keep in step
Meso-endoderm cells were cultured in a 6-well Petri dish with the RPMI medium
0.25 × 106 cells (in 0.5 ml MEF-CM medium) were seeded on top of the micropatterned neuroectoderm cells
During the ectoderm and meso-endoderm co-culture procedure
patterns were grown in the MEF-CM medium without any small molecules
The medium was changed daily for days
Fluorescence images were acquired using a confocal TCS SP5 microscope (Leica Microsystems)
Image processing was performed with ImageJ software (NIH)
All micropatterning experiments and differentiation in standard culture conditions were performed at least three times
The data and analyses in each micropattern induction figure belong to one representative experiment
The sample size was not pre-determined and no statistical tests were used to determine the significance of results on micropatterned colonies
Circular colonies with a non-radially symmetric cell density pattern at the end of the treatment were excluded from analyses
The average intensity of a marker was calculated for each cell as the average of the immunofluorescence intensity in that cell normalized to the intensity of DAPI staining in the same cell

“14 mock interviews” and “believing in yourself”
These are some key ingredients to transform a research idea into reality
Cecilia Laterza and Martha Pamato are three researchers from the University of Padua who have achieved something truly remarkable: first earning a Marie Curie fellowship from the European Commission as early-career researchers and then
She matured the intention to develop an independent line of research when she was still a post-doc
With a solid background in the molecular biology of DNA repair and replication
she only had a few preliminary results to back her ambitious research idea
“I felt I was not ready to apply for an ERC Starting Grant”
the interdisciplinary nature of her project made an MSCA fellowship an ideal stepping stone: “my research idea required a slight change of topic towards virology” she explains
She designed her MSCA proposal as a sort of Proof of Concept for the feasibility of a broader research vision
The fellowship enabled her to gather the crucial preliminary results at the department of Molecular Medicine: she had what she needed to write the more competitive ERC proposal
“Of course I was lucky that this plan worked out fine
The story could have ended in many other ways
Having in mind the possible future steps when applying for the Marie Curie has been extremely helpful in tailoring my MSCA project and in making the transition to the ERC proposal easier”
Cecilia began drafting her MSCA fellowship when she was a post-doc at Lund University in Sweden
working on neurological disorders with a background in neuroscience
Driven to explore a more interdisciplinary approach
she found the perfect fit at the department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Padua
“I got an enormous support from the International Research Office of the University of Padua in writing
managing and organizing the application “she says
While MSCA proposals are prepared jointly with the hosting research lab
the ERC project demands a different approach: “You have to develop your research idea by yourself
You can have help from collaborators of your former lab
but you start being independent and responsible for all the steps
Thanks to the ERC Starting Grant she obtained a position as Associate Professor at the department of Biomedical Sciences
Martha obtained her bachelor’s degree at the department of Geosciences before spending 11 years abroad
where she conducted her MSCA fellowship on diamond formation
and now she is continuing her work with an ERC Starting Grant
“I wanted to bring back home everything that I learned abroad
Becoming Associate Professor here is a dream coming true
I knew here I would have access to the best facilities needed for my research
and the International Research Office was of incredible support at every stage”
Each of them has a single piece of advice to offer to aspiring researchers
“Come up with a core idea that really makes you excited” says Irene
“If you feel butterflies in your stomach when thinking of doing that research
Trying to transmit this feeling to the evaluators is a great plus”
even though the ERC is a very competitive application”
She also emphasizes the distinction between the two funding schemes
“Stress the conjunction between you and your hosting lab
while seek input and support from other researchers for preparing the ERC proposal: I think I had 14 mock interviews before the actual ERC interview
You really need to be convinced that your research idea can make the difference”
I was also lucky to have three ERC grantees at the department of Geosciences when I decided to apply: I just went and asked them for advice: I really bothered them a lot
or at least surround yourself with people who believe in you”

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge and manager Aaron Boone declined to respond to criticism from the coach of a Little League team from Staten Island who accused the Yankees slugger of ignoring his players during New York’s visit to the Little League World Series
South Shore Little League manager Bob Laterza said Judge did not spend time with his team before Sunday’s Little League Classic against the Detroit Tigers in Williamsport
He also said Judge ignored the players who yelled his name when he was in the on-deck circle
“How about turning around or wave to New York and the kids that think you’re a hero?” Laterza said
Judge was asked about Laterza's comments before the Yankees faced the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday
“I’ve got no response for that,” Judge said
“I’m not gonna give him a response because it’s about the kids
“I’m not even going to dignify that with a response,” Boone said
“Aaron Judge is as good as it gets with everyone.”
The Yankees released a statement about the team's visit to the LLWS
“Our entire roster spent the day in Williamsport connecting with as many Little Leaguers as they possibly could
including the team from Staten Island,” the statement said
Judge was seen interacting with several children along with other teammates
including Jazz Chisholm Jr and Giancarlo Stanton
Chisholm tossed souvenirs to kids and filmed the encounter while Stanton demonstrated how to grip a baseball during a bus ride with Little Leaguers
“We got a chance to spend a lot of time with quite a few kids in Williamsport

January 11, 2023The latest cohort of St. John’s University nursing students is embarking on a career whose demands are evolving but whose foundational values remain as essential as ever, according to Francine Laterza, Ed.D., R.N., PNP, CNE
The University’s new class of 39 nursing students began studies this fall
they will begin work in an industry hardened by the coronavirus pandemic
but still guided by values of service and compassion
“The pandemic experience shaped the outlook of people who were considering nursing as a career,” Dr
“Maybe they had a loved one in the hospital and they had a real one-on-one interaction with their nurses,” Dr
“Nurses went the extra mile to help people to heal or to have a last moment with their loved ones.”
Nursing education is not new to St. John’s University. In 1937, a Department of Nursing was formed at St. John’s within The School of Education. The department became a separate School of Nursing Education in 1942
helping to train nurses during World War II
the School again became a department under The School of Education
Laterza continues to build a new nursing curriculum
the students are taking mostly general University-required courses
Nursing courses for the group should begin largely in 2023 and clinical work
exposing students to specialized areas of practice
should begin when they begin their third full year
Dr. Laterza has more than 18 years of experience as a registered nurse and a pediatric nurse practitioner and another 14 years of experience as a nursing educator. She is a past recipient of the National League for Nursing Foundation’s Nurse Educator Award and is a National League for Nursing Certified Nurse Educator
A resident of Massapequa, NY, Dr. Laterza has worked in a number of New York City-based hospitals. She said she would like to capitalize on the University’s historical relationship with the borough of Queens, growing the program in the Vincentian tradition
“I see the nursing school as an opportunity to give back to the borough
I would like to make this the nursing program of Queens
There are some great institutions in Queens that do not have the nursing personnel to support them.”
The inaugural cohort has a decidedly metropolitan-area identity
More than half of the cohort self-identifies as nonwhite
Consistent with the cultural diversity of Queens
Laterza says the University will follow a theory of education called transcultural nursing popularized by Madeleine Leininger
a nursing theorist who believes in considering a patient’s racial
and cultural influences when determining a plan of care
Such an approach can ease feelings of uncertainty and fear in patients
It likewise can allow nurses to broaden their perspectives and offer more holistic care
According to Dr. Laterza, transcultural nursing is consistent with St. John’s core values and an ideal fit for nurses who hail from and seek career opportunities in diverse metropolitan regions
“Nurses should always understand cultural sensitivities,” she said
“That is what will make us different here at St
Our core values allow us to attract a diverse population of students who want to be part of a community that is diverse and welcoming.”
Several members of the inaugural cohort shared their stories recently
including why they decided to pursue nursing education and what made them choose St
Though their backgrounds and career ambitions vary
all are proud to be members of this pioneering group
ESTHER BABALOLA is using the lessons she learned in track and field to propel her to success as part of the newest cohort of St
and attention to detail are all essential to a gifted sprinter and jumper
But they are also fundamental to success as a student
The daughter of a doctor who happens to also be a conference champion long jumper
and offers her an opportunity to one day become a nurse practitioner or even attend medical school
“Seeing the way my mom takes care of my whole family
“What I didn’t know until seeing it was how much people respect her
Now that I might be pursuing a job in the medical field
John’s nursing program have been demanding
but they have also been effective preparation for her career ambitions
EMMA DERGARABEDIAN is uncertain what changed the direction of her life
but she is delighted to be on a path now toward earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing at St
Unaware the degree program was available at St
But once she discovered the University’s nursing program while doing some random research
I realized then that I really liked this school
I wanted to stay close to home for college
Emma, a graduate of Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville
has been interested in health-care services for several years
She serves as a caretaker for her grandmother
and was an athletic trainer intern at her high school
A decorated athlete who excelled in lacrosse
she imagines a career one day as an orthopedic or emergency room nurse
JOEL KIM was fortunate to survive a complicated birth
he is determined to pay his good fortune forward in a career that helps others
Born with digestive complications that required life-saving surgery as a newborn
Joel has known from childhood that he wanted to become a nurse
“I’ve always known that I want to help other people,” Joel said
I would not be here today if it wasn’t for the care I received from the people who worked in the hospital and in the health-care industry.”
The son of two nurses, Joel survived emergency gastrointestinal surgery to take pressure off a stressed digestive system. His mother, who works at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in Flushing
were later told that two such procedures were performed at that time; the other baby did not survive
there was no question about a career choice
“I watched my parents and how hard they worked to help others
JORDAN SCHMIDT’S life took a turn when her mother, Andrea Schmidt, died of cancer two months before her graduation in June from Massapequa High School in Massapequa
motherly guidance from above as she made the decision to pivot to St
John’s and join its cohort of nursing students
“I didn’t know this until a few months after she passed
said while seated in the D’Angelo Center during a break in her classes
“She didn’t tell me because she didn’t want to influence me
She knew having my sister here would be a great resource
Jordan abandoned plans to attend Penn State University
Her ambitions include becoming a nurse practitioner
“When my mom was in hospice care I saw how compassionate the nurses were,” Jordan recalled
“I watched the nurses take care of her and I wanted to pay that forward

“What I remember about the war is that I was four years old and my brother Samson was two,” she said
Her father had gone to work delivering airplane fuel for the planes stationed at Pearl Harbor
Laterza was used to hearing planes flying overhead because she lived near the flight path of Pearl Harbor and Hickam Airfield
She and her brother got scared when the house began to shake
but I’m afraid,” Laterza remembered saying to her brother
“Let’s hide under the bed and maybe whatever it is will go away.”

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor began at 7:55 that morning
The entire attack took one hour and 15 minutes
leaving 2,403 American service members and civilians dead and another 1,178 injured
We didn’t know what was going on,” Laterza remembered
Sometime later she learned that Pearl Harbor was attacked and all about the heroics of her father who leaped from his truck to alert G.I.s to the attack
You’d have to go to the shelter and put on a gas mask
you sat there until the all-clear siren came on,” she said
But fewer ships would be transporting supplies during the war

Hawaiians had to stand in long lines to get routine items

“They had this piece of lard with a coloring thing that you added and that was your butter
I never tasted hamburger meat until after the war.”
Laterza and the rest of the islanders lived that way until the war ended Sept

The head of the Fayetteville VA Medical Center will resign later this year
an Army veteran who took charge of medical care for one of the nation’s fastest-growing veterans populations in April
told the Observer that he informed employees of his decision during a meeting on Monday morning
Laterza said he would leave the Department of Veterans Affairs before Thanksgiving
but did not give a reason for the decision
adding that he planned to speak more about his reasons for leaving at a later date
The retired colonel served 32 years on active duty before his retirement from the Army last year
His last assignment was as commander of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany
Laterza oversees healthcare for more than 75,000 veterans and a network that includes an annual budget of $332.8 million
The Fayetteville VA spans communities around Fort Bragg
Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point and Wilmington
it has been among the fastest growing regions in the VA
VA Secretary Robert Wilkie said Fayetteville was the “fastest growing single area in the VA,” with 2,000 veterans added each month
Laterza replaced Elizabeth Goolsby as head of the Fayetteville VA
Goolsby retired in December following a 42-year career with the VA
She told the Observer at that time that she was joining the Peace Corps and moving to Africa to assist in health-related efforts for women and children as part of a lifelong dream
Goolsby led the Fayetteville VA for seven years
the longest tenure in the modern history of the Fayetteville VA
Of the four directors who preceded Goolsby
none lasted longer than four years and each left amid controversy
Laterza stressed there was no controversy related to his resignation
he has led the VA as it began efforts to recover from Hurricane Florence
which damaged the Wilmington Health Care Center and caused the cancellation of 17,000 appointments across parts of eastern North Carolina
Laterza has held several town hall meetings with VA staff and patients during his tenure
he highlighted improvements that had been made in recent months
Among those successes was a decrease in the time local veterans wait for their first appointments with the VA
Officials said wait times at the Fayetteville VA have drastically improved in recent years and are a far cry from 2014 numbers
when an audit revealed the medical center had some of the longest wait times in the country

Shareholders got more money than the women who were subjected to repeated sexual assault
All of the female employees — including Gretchen Carlson — are still barred from talking about anything pertaining to Fox News
the episode played out similarly to the way the news headlines portrayed it back in 2016: After Gretchen Carlson’s lawsuit was filed
Ailes not only tried to smear her but also pressured a lot of Fox News employees (and Donald Trump) to support him — in fact
Kimberly Guilfoyle (Don Jr.s’ current girlfriend) was probably the most vocal female Ailes defender at the time (Beth Ailes pushed her to be front and center in Ailes’ defense)>
Here are a few other fact-checking notes about the finale:
As we wrote last week, Gretchen Carlson is barred by an NDA from discussing the veracity of The Loudest Voice, but she did say that her husband
was entirely supportive (the series depicts Josh Charles’ character as a little wishy-washy)
which I guess was a sort of thank you for lining up all those sexual harassment victims for him
Laterza has completely disappeared from the public since being pushed out of Fox News after Ailes’ firing
Ailes died ten months after he was fired. He fell and suffered a subdural hematoma, which was exacerbated by his hemophilia. I’d like to say that I wish he would’ve lived a disgraced life of obscurity for another 20 years, but Ailes was living it up in a Palm Springs home he bought with his $40 million severance package and consulting with Trump, so death could not come soon enough.
Sadly, justice was never really exacted where it concerns Roger Ailes.

audiences want to know: How closely did these actors’ dramatizations of their alter egos hew to the real thing
here’s a dossier detailing the veracity of their performances
covering the first five episodes (which span the events of 1995 through 2012)
with updates to come as Loudest Voice quiets to a close
The Roger Ailes seen in Loudest Voice is heavyset, histrionic, blindingly jingoistic and xenophobic, sexist, and — despite his success — simplistic in his worldview. He says, eats, grabs, and conquers what he wants (including, as alluded to in episode five, a failed stab at producing on Broadway) when he wants
because on some level he’s filling the hole bored into him by an abusive father
and childhood spent struggling with hemophilia
he not only defined Republican orthodoxy dating back to the mid-1990s but engineered Donald Trump’s presidential run and even coined the “Make America Great” slogan that has become the stuff of polarizing political legend
and it depicts him sexually brutalizing and/or harassing female employees including popular daytime host Gretchen Carlson and booker Linda Luhn as well as grooming a young conservative journalist named Joe Lindsley to be his propaganda puppet and loyal sycophant
that included a copy of The Art of War with an inscription that concluded
which purportedly set aside $30,000 for his loyal assistant
nearly triple what Ailes signed off on to keep Luhn quiet
Loudest Voice does attempt to humanize Shine by conveying his mixed feelings over Fox’s handling of real-time 9/11 coverage
though we could find no reporting on whether Ailes’s directives that day did indeed give him pause

Roger Ailes has left hundreds of thousands of dollars of his reported $100 million fortune to loyal friends and associates, according to a report in the Daily Mail
Ailes’ longtime personal assistant Judy Laterza was bequeathed $30,000 in Ailes’ will which is dated last October. Ailes died in May after slipping at his home in Palm Beach
Ailes left Fox with a reported $40 million payout in July
2016 following an internal investigation into multiple claims of sexual harassment
Laterza was earning more than $2 million a year, according to a Fox executive
She was one of the first to depart after Ailes
According to Gabriel Sherman, who wrote an unauthorized biography of Ailes, and subsequently closely covered his downfall
Laterza “seemed to function as a recruiter of sorts” for young women
A former Fox producer told Sherman that Laterza entered fake names into Ailes’s datebook when women went into his office
The bulk of Ailes’ estate goes to his wife and son

POINT PLEASANT BEACH – Over the years
friends and family of Eileen Flarity-Laterza have told her to write a book about some of her experiences growing up in a rooming house owned and operated by her Irish parents a block from the beach in Point Pleasant Beach
She got started on the project three years ago and just released her book, “Stop Me If I Told You This One…” that is filled with eye-wateringly funny and poignant tales about some of the rooming house residents and much more
“(The rooming house) was kind of unusual
and it was filled mostly with drunks and drug addicts
so there were some stories that came out of that,” she said recently from a coffee shop while being interviewed for this story
recalled a story from when she was 10 years old and one of the permanent rooming house guests
came clattering into the common living room with a tray full of hot tea and cups just as the U.S
“All we heard was ‘One small step for man…’ there were 10 or 15 of us waiting for over an hour and we missed the whole thing,” she said
Eileen shared a room with her two siblings
the family would rent out all the rooms and sleep in the garage
her father sold the rooming house “as is…he left everything
There were probably hypodermic needles in the drawers
He left the family photo albums; he had no attachment to anything,” she said
who started her own consulting business 21 years ago after working as a project manager and vice president at Goldman Sachs
One of her chapters is devoted to some of the dozens of blind dates she has been on
She recalled one where she let a friend fix her up with a nice man but warned her there was a catch: “he has a giant hook-nose and a glass eye.”
but she decided not to have a second date with him after he told her he sometimes took out his eye
set it on the bar and told the bartender “Here’s lookin’ at ya.”
Flash forward a few months when Eileen and some girlfriends were at a karaoke bar in Asbury Park
On the stage she noticed a performer with a giant hook nose and a glass eye wearing a polyester dress and sensible shoes
her date said he would be wearing a black turtleneck and a gray sweater
and the two spent time getting to know each other and were hitting it off until he said he had to go
“He said he had to meet someone,” she recalled
she looked up and across the bar was another man wearing a black turtleneck and a gray sweater sheepishly waving at her
“Match.com has become less of a place to find love and more of a place to get a great story,” she said

CANAL FULTON – Community members took to the streets Saturday to honor Lawrence Township police officer Sean VanDenberg as his funeral procession passed through downtown
both of Canal Fulton and friends of the officer and his family, waited patiently in their vehicle for the procession to pass by to pay their respects
"We came out today to show support for him
his blood family and family in blue," Laterza told the Canton Repository

DE PERE - St. Norbert College senior defensive back Frank Laterza was named a third-team selection to the Associated Press Little All-America Team.
Laterza, a Barrington Hills, Ill., native, is the first St. Norbert player to earn AP Little All-America honors since 2001. The AP Little All-America Team includes players from NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA programs.
Latzera was named Midwest Conference Defensive Skill Player of the Year following a year where he led the Green Knights to a 10-1 overall record and perfect regular season. St. Norbert captured the Midwest Conference championship, its 16th since 1985, with a 16-7 win over Monmouth College in the league's title game on Nov. 14.
Laterza led the Green Knights this season with six interceptions with 121 return yards. He added seven passes defended, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble to his total of 23 tackles.
St. Norbert's defense allowed just 155.5 yards passing per game and the unit finished with 21 interceptions, its most since 2006. The Green Knights also allowed just 13.4 points per game this season.
Laterza is the fourth St. Norbert player to earn honors on a team of the AP Little All-America Team. Jerimiah Janssen was a first-team selection at linebacker in 2001 and a second-team choice in 2000. Dave Jacquet was a first-team honoree as a defensive lineman in 1964 and Norm Jarock was a first-team honoree in 1957.
BERKELEY – An Ocean County man has been arrested and charged for allegedly downloading images of child pornography.
Investigation began when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, through the New Jersey State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force brought attention to police of a man in Berkeley Township downloading images of child pornography. They identified the man as 70-year-old Anthony Laterza.
According to detectives, they executed a search warrant on Laterza’s home on November 12 and seized all electronic devices from the residence. After forensic review, it revealed that the devices held apparent images of child pornography.
“It is our understanding that this defendant serves a Deacon at a church in Lakehurst, as such we have made appropriate notifications,” Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer stated.
Laterza was arrested and charged with three counts of Possession of Child Pornography. He was transported to the Ocean County Jail where he is currently lodged pending a detention hearing.
Italy is once again in political turmoil. On Thursday, after key coalition partners – the post-ideological Five Star Movement, far-right League and centre-right Forza Italia – withdrew their support from his “national unity” government, Italy’s Prime Minister Mario Draghi announced his resignation
The country is now left with a caretaker government until a snap general election scheduled for September 25
and an ever-deepening geopolitical conflict between the European Union and Russia on the back of the latter’s invasion of Ukraine
Draghi’s government was the authority Brussels relied upon to ensure the €210 billion ($214bn) allocated for Italy from the EU Next Generation Fund – the biggest recovery programme since the US Marshall Plan – would be efficiently managed
there are now serious concerns over delays in reimbursements and implementation
Draghi’s cabinet is also credited with swiftly finding alternative sources of gas to reduce dependence on Russia. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February, Italy has secured increasing supplies of Algerian gas, which could also be moved further northwards to Germany
Italy’s energy future is once again in question
The dissolution of Italy’s government is a major win for Russia’s President Vladimir Putin
While Draghi has acted as a major curb to Putin’s influence in Italy and Europe
the three political leaders that are responsible for the government crisis all showed support for the Russian dictator in the past
Forza Italia’s head, Silvio Berlusconi, meanwhile, has been a long-term friend of Vladimir Putin. They visited each other in their holiday homes and were close allies on the international scene when Berlusconi was prime minister in the 2000s. The two leaders also have joint commercial interests
Salvini released a vague statement condemning “all military aggressions”
and only after some criticism did he admit that “Russia is wrong”
but barely ever mentioned Putin by name since
Berlusconi kept quiet for a month and a half after the invasion before saying that he was “deeply disappointed and saddened by Vladimir Putin’s behaviour”
Conte’s condemnation of the Russian invasion has been unambiguous
but his recent position against sending more arms to Ukraine – linked to a similar sentiment among many Italians – has been interpreted by some as a sign of soft support for Russia
Draghi’s exit undoubtedly favours Putin – but even more important for the Russian leader would be a victory in the ballot box of leaders and parties close to him
The current electoral law is a mix of proportional representation and first-past-the-post electoral colleges
The only coalition that formally exists at the moment is the right-wing alliance of League
Forza Italia and Brothers of Italy – the far-right party led by Giorgia Meloni
The latter is first in opinion polls (23 percent)
with the centre-left Democratic Party trailing shortly behind (22 percent)
the Dems’ plans to form a broader alliance with the Five Star Movement are now in jeopardy – Democrats are resolutely pro-Draghi and disapprove of Five Star’s anti-Draghi U-turn
The Democratic Party is in talks with breakaway centrist factions that left the Dems recently
but it is unclear at this stage whether they will be able to form an electoral alliance
the right-wing coalition is also experiencing problems
Disagreements have already stopped them from winning mayoral races in many cities in recent local elections
but the prospects of a landslide national victory if they manage to keep their alliance together until election day will probably act as a strong catalyst for unity
While Berlusconi and Salvini feel threatened by Meloni’s rising star – Brothers of Italy is ahead of League (15 percent) and Forza Italia (seven percent) by several points – Meloni might indeed be the most presentable option for premiership in the eyes of national and international institutions because she took a decisive pro-Ukraine position since the invasion
Even before her pro-NATO turn, she received significant endorsements from centrist quarters
raising fears that her skilful weaving of “respectability politics” with a fundamentally far-right platform might turn out to be more effective than the flamboyant “strongman” style of Salvini
who has been steadily losing votes and popularity
The right-wing electoral alliance is a direct descendant of Berlusconi’s government coalitions of the 1990s and the 2000s: back in 1994
Forza Italia was the largest partner in the ruling coalition
which came out of the dissolution of the far-right Italian Social Movement and a formal rejection of their fascist roots
Northern League (which later became League) was rooted in the north of the country
Meloni’s party comes from a section of National Alliance that
has strong and close documented links with fascist supporters and backdoor political operatives
Berlusconi enabled the entry into national government of allegedly post-fascist political forces and the early populists of Northern League
Northern League started in the late 1980s as an anti-establishment movement that supported northern Italy’s independence from Italy
and blamed the Italian south for the country’s ills
Berlusconi is playing a key role in supporting two openly far-right movements that now hold the vast majority of the coalition votes
Brothers of Italy and League share a militant anti-immigration agenda
and opposition to most EU policies and reforms demanded by Brussels in exchange for Next Generation EU money
They both deploy populist tactics and rhetoric
If they realise their electoral ambitions in September, the right-left convergence of the populist government alliance of Five Star and League formed in 2018 would be replaced by a fully fledged far-right government with fascist inclinations
This would mark the total failure of the strategy systematically pursued by the left and the centre left in recent years of trying to break populists into some kind of “right” and “left” fronts
as a way to contain the rise of the far right
League and Brothers of Italy have little competition in the populist camp
Progressive forces will need to drastically change their path if they want to block the electoral rise of the far right
The smaller left formations have been preoccupied with critiquing Draghi’s technocratic approach and are stuck on an interpretation of the current moment that dates back to the eurozone crisis of the early 2010s – in any event
the narrative of “technocracy vs the people” has been successfully hijacked by populists
The centre-left Democratic Party has been very good in manoeuvring in the corridors of power of Italy’s representative democracy
and has played a prominent role in government for most of this legislature despite its 2018 electoral defeat
It is struggling to propose a forward-looking programme that goes beyond defensive – although admittedly valid – arguments that a government without it would put Italians in a worse spot than they already are
the Democratic leader Enrico Letta rightly indicated a social agenda for Italy as the main party platform for the elections
as it is the only OECD country where salaries have declined in real terms since 1990
The biggest challenge for Democrats and the left remains how to attract those disaffected voters that have moved in recent years to populist formations such as Five Star or might not vote altogether – after all
a large number of voters are undecided or do not plan to vote in September
Despite the hype about the Mélenchon model in France
the erratic and destructive actions of Five Star politicians are a clear sign that the idea of a “progressive populism” that would act as a viable alternative to the far right is a chimera that is best left to the annals of political history
Progressives should rather focus on concrete social democratic measures that would benefit the whole of society
such as putting an end to the wild west of precarious contracts
raising spending on public health and family and labour welfare
and adopting inclusive citizenship laws for people of migrant and refugee background
more efficient and attractive electoral strategy
they cannot prevent a major victory by the far right

Laterza served at St. John’s Catholic Church in Lakehurst. According to a church bulletin last November, Anthony was going to "assist at Mass
visit the sick at home and in nursing homes
baptize little ones and lead prayers at vigil services in funeral homes."
A message on the church's website from Father Jim O'Neill said Laterza took a break from his position at the end of 2019 and left the parish after O'Neill turned down his request to return in May
which was the last time he says he spoke to Laterza
O'Neill did not reveal why he rejected Laterza's return
"At St. John's and in the Diocese of Trenton, we take the protection of children very seriously," O'Neill wrote, adding that all staff and volunteers who work with children undergo background checks and are subject to the Virtus program that many Catholic dioceses use to help prevent child abuse.
A 2005 Archdiocese of Newark newsletter indicates Laterza graduated from the diaconate class of ordained deacons in June 2005
Trenton Diocese spokeswoman Rayanne Bennett told NJ.com he was a deacon in the Archdiocese of Newark before he "relocated." She did not respond Friday morning to New Jersey 101.5 for further information
Laterza was being held Friday at the Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing
