Luke Lavello has long been lauded for his instincts and range in the defensive backfield
able to dissect offenses and direct teammates
he was a playmaker in the secondary and a vocal leader for the entire unit
Circumstances this season also allowed him to show just why he was so respected
As the Arlington High School football team breezed through the regular season
there was a greater onus on opponents to pass — and take chances downfield ― in an attempt to keep up
Quarterbacks paid the price as Lavello racked up seven interceptions
he became a ballhawk last fall and forced the most turnovers among Dutchess County players in Section 1 or 9
Offense: Rescigno headlines the Journal's offensive football all-stars
Comeback season: Marlboro tops Red Hook defense sparks resurgence
always ensuring we were in the correct call," Admirals coach Michael Morano said of the all-Section 1 star
"He also had an uncanny knack for finding the ball."
Those attributes and that production made him the Journal's Defensive Player of the Year
averaging 27.2 yards per catch and setting Arlington's single-season receiving record with 544 yards and seven touchdowns
he shined as an edge rusher and played the run well
two blocked punts and two defensive touchdowns
He helped lead a defense that recorded four shutouts and held regular-season opponents to 7.6 points per game
DB/WR/PK: The all-Section 9 standout had two interceptions
and excelled on special teams with punt return and kick return touchdowns and 18 point-after kicks
He also had 614 yards and six touchdowns as a receiver
helping Highland win its first playoff game since 2009
LB/FB: With the technical skill and strength to shed blocks and stop the run and the athleticism to cover in space
Croutch "was a force at inside linebacker," coach Jim Cancellari said
He also was Defensive MVP of the Section 1 Exceptional Senior Game
Durling was a hard-hitting run-stuffer who also had coverage range
The two-time Journal All-Star had 113 tackles
He also ran for 921 yards and five touchdowns
CB: His exceptional speed and footwork enabled him to thrive in man coverage
taking on the vertical threats and often mirroring receivers
The all-Section 9 selection made observers take notice when he held the state's all-time leading receiver Marek Arbogast to four short catches in the Presidents' shutout of O'Neill
DT/TE: His outstanding athleticism within a 6-foot-5
250-pound frame made him a difficult matchup and a prospect drawing considerable college interest
McGann was disruptive on the interior line
LB/FB: He emerged as a charismatic leader and his playing style supported that as Meilleur was an aggressive and physical run-stopper who often made plays around the line
forced two fumbles and recovered another for the Dragons in their return season to 11-player football
S/QB/P: With his speed and understanding of offenses
the two-time Journal All-Star was a ballhawk and he often made timely plays
Ramsey also was a dual-threat quarterback and he is a Canisius lacrosse commit
CB/RB: The all-Section 1 standout has good athleticism and savvy in coverage and often successfully shadowed the opponent's best receiver
Rossi was instinctive and physical in defending the run
He also totaled 573 yards and seven touchdowns
Sabini was a playmaker in the Warriors' Cover 2 scheme
and his leadership helped the rebuilding group reach the Section 9 Class A final
forced two fumbles and had an interception
who competed while grieving the tragic loss of his dad
inspired teammates during a run to the Class D state semifinal
DL/TE: Described by coach Jim Phelan as a "dominating and destructive force on our defensive line," the all-Section 9 pick had 56 tackles
two fumble recoveries and scored a touchdown after recovering a punt he blocked
LB/FB: He had a breakout season and earned all-Section 1 honors after recording 57 tackles
Thomison also scored three offensive touchdowns
LB/OL: Described by Cancellari as "a student of the game
VanDerStuyf's diligent preparation and film study allowed him to diagnose plays pre-snap and help guide the defense
The two-time Journal All-Star had 42 tackles
and four sacks for a unit that held opponents to 11.4 points en route to the section semifinal
Haldane: He led the program through a rebuilding phase
and the Blue Devils broke through last fall
overcoming rival Tuckahoe to win their first Section 1 championship since 2018
Haldane surged through the playoffs and narrowly missed pulling an upset of Section 2's Stillwater in the Class D state semifinal

and I've lived in Seattle almost 30 years
and had never been wine tasting in Woodinville until last weekend
but couple that with the fact that I've written about and/or edited numerous articles on the wineries out there
received ample press releases on the award-winning vineyards and bottles
and met several Woodinville winemakers who are absolutely delightful
To someone who has lived in Seattle proper for her whole life - Woodinville seems and feels lightyears away
That's what I thought until I got a little note from the folks over at Savor Seattle that they were launching a new wine-tasting app that was essentially a self-guided tasting tour of a handful of wineries in the Seattle and Woodinville areas
The Seattle Wine Passport cost $59.99
You don't need to be a mathematician to see you're coming out on top with this deal
The Lyft credit was what cinched the deal for me. Instead of driving out to Woodinville and worrying about how I would get around while drinking, and how I would get back - here was a built-in way! I started out my Saturday afternoon in the small tasting room at Martedi Winery
founded in 2008 by brothers Joseph and John Miglino
it was none other than John himself who was pouring for us that day
Not only did I love the six different wines he had us taste (SIX!) but I walked away with my new favorite white
It's a blend of several of Martedi's white varietals
and I was not only infatuated by the taste (sweet
roughly translated to 'Kitchen Sink'
Next, we headed down the street to the epicenter of tasting in Woodinville - the Hollywood Hill area. Within just a couple blocks, there are eight wineries participating in the Wine Passport that you could choose from...you wouldn't even need a Lyft. We went to the first one we say with a deck = Patterson Cellars
The pours here were also incredible generous
and a the vibe was slightly more relaxed than Martedi
Patterson was packed and we were the only ones in Martedi...so that could also explain a lot
but the friend I was with is - and she loved the 2015 Sangiovese she tried
that's not the friend I went with - but I kinda wish it was
Our final stop for the afternoon was just across the street at Alexandria Nicole Cellars
Their Woodinville tasting room is on the back side of the Hollywood Schoolhouse
and is one of three tasting rooms they have on behalf of their Horse Heaven Hills-grown vineyards
Fun Fact: they offer Tiny House Glamping ON THEIR VINEYARD which honestly sounds like a dream
My body (liver especially) doesn't have the stamina it used to
and I felt really lame only being able to hit three of the ten wineries
But then I realized that the passport isn't a ONE DAY ONLY deal - still have seven other tastings I can redeem all in one day
over multiple days - even on seven different days if I'm so inclined
Long story short - you're a fool if you enjoy Washington wine and don't participate in this passport
If I'm averaging that each winery's tasting cost $15
plus $50 of Lyft credit - this is about $200 worth of goods you're getting for $59.99
Getting the passport is as easy as downloading the Savor Seattle app on your phone, and following the prompts to sign up. Cheers, and maybe I'll see you out there! I do have seven more wineries to try out...

Eight municipalities in Italy developed in 2023 their local plans to combat labour exploitation in agriculture
This comes as a result of the first phase of the InCaS project which helps implement Italy's national three-year plan to combat labour exploitation and 'gangstering' (caporalato)
or the employment of a large number of workers
for very little money and under dire living conditions
The three year plan originally spanned from 2020 to 2022. In June 2022, the plan was extended for another three years
The InCaS project was developed by the National Association of Municipalities (ANCI) and Cittalia
and is funded by the Italian Ministry of Labour and Social Policies
The plan is important for third-country nationals (TCNs) working in the agricultural sector
as they represent a significant proportion of the labour force - 18% according to Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) 2021 data - and are often subjected to gangmastering
The 8 municipalities that launched their local plans include Albenga
They used targeted participatory processes that led to the development of the local plans
which were in turn formally adopted via council or city council resolutions
The local multisectoral plans are meant to ensure the local-level implementation of the measures provided for in the national plan
The latter relies on the work of national and local institutions
representatives of employers in the agricultural and production sectors
The development of these plans represents the first phase of the involvement of local authorities
The added value of the plans is that they have been developed in a participatory manner
listening to and incorporating the suggestions of local actors and civil society alike
The plans are available in Italian and usually cover 2023-2026
See also an example of the work of trade unions in support of migrant agriculture workers
which still retains rites and traditions that have almost disappeared
it preserves cultural heritages and ancient traditions
This is the case of the Arbëreshë culture
a minority that is fully part of the regional identity of Basilicata
It derives from the ancient communities of Albanians who fled their land
San Costantino and San Paolo Albanese in the Pollino Park
a center where the Arbëreshë traditions are still particularly alive
you could happen to see ladies walking around dressed in colorful clothes
hearing Albanian speaking and participating in masses with an Orthodox rite
you can happen to stumble upon an Arbëreshë wedding
It is a real show in which a tradition strongly rooted in the local people relives
marriage is not just a private event that unites two people
Normally the Arbëreshë wedding is celebrated on Sunday
but the celebrations begin on the previous Thursday
when friends join the couple and sing all the joy they feel for their union
it is the women’s duty to sing for the bride
while helping her get ready by wearing traditional colorful dresses
but the groom still has to wait: it will in fact be in front of the door of the house that the father of the bride will officially ask him if he wants her
where the wedding will be held according to the Byzantine rite
which includes particular customs in addition to the classic exchange of wedding rings
a solemn moment in which the celebrant binds the hands of the couple with a ribbon
then places two finely decorated crowns on their heads and lets the witnesses exchange them three times from one head to the other
Then comes the time of a typically Albanian tradition
It is a home-made bread in the shape of a nest that symbolizes the new love nest of the spouses
who will share it through the hands of the celebrant
Immediately afterwards they will drink the wine three times from a common chalice
which will then be broken on the ground to sanction the completeness of the union
During the last part of the ceremony the celebrant leads the spouses
and the witnesses in a procession that sees them turn three times around the altar to symbolize the beginning of the journey of life together
Now the couple can go out and celebrate with the community
in a party that goes on throughout the night

Group 3 winner Lavello is the first son of rising star Zarak to embark on a stallion career
The three-year-old will stand the 2023 season at Haras du Lion but will first contest the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Bayern next month before potentially ending his racing career outside of Europe
Haras du Lion bought into Gestut Hof Ittlingen's homebred grandson of Dubawi prior to his comeback second in the Group 3 Land Trophy at Baden-Baden last weekend
and it is the first time that the farm has partnered with another in the racing career of a stallion
"An agreement was reached at the start of autumn with Lavello's owner-breeder Manfred Ostermann
who had already worked out a programme for the horse's four-year-old career
Thanks to the assistance of Richard Venn during the negotiations
Lavello will race until the end of this year and retire to stud in 2023."
Lavello began this season by defeating subsequent Deutsches Derby and Grosser Dallmayr-Preis winner Sammarco in the Group 3 Bavarian Classic
The three-year-old hails from Ittlingen's outstanding L family; his dam Laura is a winning Montjeu half-sister to Grade 2 Sky Classic winner and Grade 1 United Nations Stakes runner-up Lauro by Monsun and to the Group 3 Preis der Winterkonigin winner Love Academy
who is the dam of Group 2 winner and Classic-placed Longina
His second dam Laurencia is a half-sister to none other than the brilliant ten-time winner and sire Lando
whose Group 1 successes include the Japan Cup and Deutsches Derby
Laurencia is also a half-sister to another Deutsches Derby winner in Laroche
It was this combination of bloodlines with that of the Group 1 Grand Prix de Saint Cloud-winning son of the outstanding Zarkava which Thomas believes can launch Lavello to successful career as a National Hunt stallion
Lavello has excellent references for a National Hunt stallion
His mother is by Montjeu and as well as that
he has the bloodlines of Mill Reef twice through his son Shirley Heights
as he is on both sides of Lavello's pedigree," said Thomas
Although Zarak's oldest crop is just three and therefore with limited opportunities to take to National Hunt racing
he is already the sire of two winners from three runners over jumps in France
They are the Grade 3 Prix Aguado third Carlton Du Berlais and Bo Zenith
who was sold to continue his racing career abroad after his debut success at Auteuil
A fee for him will be announced at a later date," Thomas added
