The aurora's unusual shape was the result of anti-auroras that formed in between the arms of the luminous letter The E-shaped aurora ended up flipping over and growing additional limbs before it disappeared from the sky A "bizarre" E-shaped aurora was recently photographed dancing in the sky above Alaska The unusual light show was caused by rare black auroras which catapult charged particles from the sun back out of Earth's atmosphere and into space black "anti-auroras" helped create a peculiar E-shaped swirl of green light recently photographed over Alaska "It came up from the northwest and I was like, 'whoa!' It looked like the letter E to me," Salat told Spaceweather.com "Within just a few minutes it sailed overhead on its back and looked like some critter with its legs in the air." The unusual aurora is the result of anti-auroras The strange phenomenon creates the rounded dark patches that look as if they have been bitten out from between the arms of the 'E' shape Related: 32 stunning photos of auroras seen from space Get the world’s most fascinating discoveries delivered straight to your inbox The swirling light shows normally only occur sparsely near the poles where Earth's magnetic field is weakest. But they are particularly prominent and widespread now due to increased solar activity tied to solar maximum the peak of the sun's roughly 11-year sunspot cycle anti-auroras interrupt the aurora-forming process by starving gases of charged particles Anti-auroras were first identified in the late 1990s. But in 2001, scientists loosely figured out how they worked when ESA's four Cluster satellites passed through space above a black aurora sighting This revealed small vertical cells in the upper atmosphere known as positively charged electric potential structures where electrons were being repelled back into space —'We'll be studying this event for years': Recent auroras may have been the strongest in 500 years, NASA says'Impossible' orange auroras spotted in UK after solar storm slams into EarthWeird dent in Earth's magnetic field is messing with auroras in the Southern Hemisphere The mechanism behind these cells remained elusive for well over a decade, until a 2015 study utilizing more than a decade of Cluster mission data showed that these structures form when auroras deplete plasma creating "ionospheric cavities," in the upper atmosphere while the magnetosphere shifts from the strain caused by solar storms the conditions have to be just right for anti-auroras to appear World's largest solar telescope turns on powerful new camera revealing breathtaking image of a continent-size sunspot 100-year solar cycle may have just restarted — and it could mean decades of dangerous space weather Digital 'resurrection' of the Titanic sheds light on fateful night the ship tore apart Introduced yesterday iPhone It has not only attracted attention worldwide with its technical specifications or price but also with a name that is significantly different from what we have been used to so far AppAlthough the phone is in a way the spiritual successor to the iPhone SE Apple he named it apparently in an attempt to unify his offer as iPhone 16e since he didn't bring the "e" closer in any way in the fan world AppThere are rumors about what could be hidden behind this letter And since we in the editorial team asked ourselves the same question below are our five ideas about what the "e" in the iPhone's name could mean Essential – E could indicate a model focused on basic but still key functions New iPhone could be based on this designation for users who do not need the latest technology but want a reliable device with an emphasis on simplicity and practicality which in the end iPhone The 16e meets these requirements It offers high performance without unnecessary premium features that not everyone will use Economy – This designation would make sense if Apple he wanted iPhone 16e presented as the most affordable iPhone pro a wider audience but still retains the reliability and smoothness that users have come to expect from Appthey expect thanks to the performance it offers Apple Intelligencewhich is to be for Apple key Enterprise – If the letter “e” stood for Enterprise it could be iPhone 16e model aimed at corporate customers It is true that Apple Although it mostly targets a wide range of users previous generations of iPhone SE were very interesting and busy for companies.ancThey were also widely equipped with these phones due to their good price/performance ratio Entry – This option would indicate the entry model in the iPhone line ideal for users looking for a simpler and more affordable device So we are de facto returning to the beginning with the “Essential” designation As an Entry it could Apple present new iPhone 16e for those customers who are upgrading from older iPhones or looking for their first device from Appyou As Apple has not officially revealed what is hidden behind the letter "e" in the name of the new iPhone or whether the "e" stands for something completely different But who knows - group for its work and affirming its co-founder According to the National Catholic Reporter: “In two letters to New Ways Ministry this year Pope Francis commended the organization for its outreach to the LGBTQ community and referred to one of its co-founders as ‘a valiant woman’ who had suffered much for her ministry “Written in Spanish on official Vatican stationary Francis’ letters mention that the pope is aware that New Ways Ministry’s ‘history has not been an easy one,’ but that loving one’s neighbor is still the second commandment tied ‘necessarily’ to the first commandment to love God “‘Thank you for your neighborly work,’ Francis wrote in a June 17 letter addressed to Francis DeBernardo “”It helped me a lot to know the full story you tell me” about New Ways Ministry’s history “Sometimes we receive partial information about people and organizations as it narrates with objectivity its history gives me light to better understand certain situations.” Commenting on the work of Sister Jeannine Gramick the organization’s co-founder who once faced Vatican censure .She is a valiant woman who makes her decisions in prayer.” The correspondence became public the same week that a New Ways Ministry webinar about the Synod on Synodality was posted and subsequently removed from a Vatican website The removal was reportedly prompted by an intervention from the U.S That removal by church officials is what lead New Ways Ministry to share its correspondence DeBernardo said doing so was a “big mistake” on the part of church officials because “having our video up there was a way of showing that the Vatican was serious about reaching out to marginalized people LGBTQ people in particular.” He told NCR further: “‘We weren’t planning on making the [pope’s] correspondence public We do believe [Francis] wants LGBTQ people speaking and we think it’d be helpful for him and helpful for his message and his invitation of inclusion that people know that he has been corresponding with us.'” who initially posted about the New Ways Ministry webinar video appearing on an official church website “‘The Holy Father’s warm letter to New Ways Ministry is not only another step in his outreach to LGBTQ people but the beginning of a kind of rehabilitation for New Ways and for [New Ways cofounder] Sister Jeannine [Gramick] as well in recognition of their important ministry in our church .There is no Vatican Dicastery for LGBTQ People or USCCB Office for LGBTQ People so official channels are more or less nonexistent.'” bolstered by the correspondence with Pope Francis New Ways Ministry is undeterred from encouraging LGBTQ and ally Catholics from participating in the synodal process “‘Despite what some church leaders might say or think of us it appears that Pope Francis is happy that we’re reaching out and helping to bring LGBTQ people into the church “‘We at New Ways Ministry have made a commitment to promote the synod experience and we’re going to continue to do so which we believe is in service to the pope’s mission This recgnition of your excelllent work is overdue Thank you so much for sharing this news and making public NWM’s correspondence from the Holy But the real scandal is that the situation he describes has been allowed to persist for 20 years or more with no end in sight. This is despite several initiatives by researchers themselves to open up access to our published research. The arXiv is a free pre-print server where most important papers in maths and physics can be found such as Mathematical Sciences Publishers (Berkeley) started at Warwick in 1997 and run under not-for-profit principles provide an alternative to the big exploitative publishing companies such as Elsevier and Springer But these initiatives have developed alongside the big pirate companies and have not affected their stranglehold What is missing is direct government action It needs to be illegal to profiteer (and not just in academic publishing) But it is not a substitute for a proper legal solution coming from united government action.Colin Rourke and Brian SandersonEmeritus mathematicians and attracts more than 50,000 readers a month with 11 million views of key opinion-leader videos from 191 countries We carry out a rigorous peer-review process and have high production standards all without charging exorbitant submission or publication fees So the disruptive model can work.Prof Gordon McVieFounding editor There is a delicious irony that George Monbiot’s piece against publishers being paid appears on the Guardian website, where every page has a pop-up note for donations. Publishing isn’t free as the Guardian’s publishers know; it also isn’t research Much research worldwide is indeed paid for by governments on behalf of the public but funding that research is not the same as paying for publication Funding pharmaceutical research doesn’t mean free drugs, and paying for the Olympics in London didn’t mean free tickets. true or real there are photographs instead of illustrations This book is read with permission from Boyds Mills Press there's a really special text feature at the back A glossary tells us some of the important words in the story and the meaning Let's listen for those important words No matter what stuff you chop up and pile on like a red mountain of buildings and silos we'll let Annabelle into the barn to be milked Annabelle produces enough milk to feed 20 calves every day and the milk from the other cows in the herd is hauled to the cheese factory nearby it would take you nearly five years to eat that many pizzas corn and soybean meal blended together in a giant mixer All the good things she needs to eat are measured into the machine and tossed like a huge garden salad She chomps down seven tons of feed in a year enough to fill your bedroom to the ceiling twice Annabelle is let into the barn for milking She likes being milked and happily munches her meal while a machine gently squeezes the milk from her udder The milk runs through a stainless steel pipe and into a cooling tank where it is kept fresh and clean the milkman backs his tank truck up to the milk house attached to our barn He dips out a sample of milk to be tested for bacteria Bacteria is small little organisms that can make milk go bad Then he pumps the milk into his truck and hauls it to the cheese factory his load of fresh milk is pumped into a storage silo The sample is tested to ensure it is clean and wholesome Then the milk flows through a pasteurizer that heats it up to 165 degrees the cheesemaker pumps it into a stainless steel vat and adds starter culture Mechanical paddles that look like robot arms Then the cheesemaker adds rennet to the vat special knives in the vat cut the curd into thousands of small cubes A clear liquid called whey oozes from the cubes The curds and whey are then pumped into a trough-like tub called a finishing table The whey drains into the center of the table The curd looks like piles of popcorn as workers shovel them into two long mounds The whey that drains off is pumped into another machine where it is condensed The concentrate whey is shipped to the other food processors and used in candy The water remaining from that process is hauled to the nearby fields where the nutrients it contains helps fertilize Fertilize means to help something grow or get healthy Fertilize the soil that grows the corn and hay Annabelle and the other cows eat workers cut the cheese into large slabs that are fed through another machine called a cheese mill Blades cut the cheese into small pieces again and they tumble into a mixer filled with hot water The cheese finally melts into a big shiny mound that looks more like pizza dough than pizza cheese The blocks of melted cheese plop into forms to cool The bricks of cheese float like overgrown building blocks in the bathtub This is where the cheese develops its own distinctive Boxes of cheese made from Annabelle's milk are shipped to grocery stores and pizza parlors across America remember Annabelle and her remarkable milk much fun learning about Annabelle's milk and cheese We also learned where delicious cheese comes from to make pizza I already drew my picture and I started my words I drew a picture of pizza and I have the word pizza cross it at the top and cross it at the bottom I add a magic E to help the I say its name we learned the difference between wants and needs And we read a really great book about where cheese comes from And I'll see you next time on "Read Copyright © 2025 you (see here) of the Nearly 300 California inmates are asking to be transferred to women's prisons under the new Senate bill which allows anyone who "identifies" as a woman - regardless of having male genitalia - to serve their sentence among women The application of the new law is shaking up the prison system of the American state and terrorizing the detained forced to share narrow spaces with self-styled "women" sometimes sex offenders that threaten their safety from two prisoners who ask not to have to suffer this further and unjust punishment _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dear President Durbin and Senator Grassley I'm there founder of the non-profit organization Woman II Woman and I represent 1300 inmates and ex-offenders in California I write to highlight that if it will pass the Equality Act will endanger not only incarcerated women I know this because I've been to prison and what's happening in California prisons as a result of SB132 and Dignity Act” which is the prison-level version of the Equality Act.  What women in state prisons are already experiencing is being extended nationwide. Loopholes to get around the law are hidden behind misleading language but they are out in the open for anyone trying to manipulate it in order to have direct access to possible victims At first glance these appear to be important and progressive measures for the prison system Who wants to deny someone respect and equality without considering in the slightest one of the most forgotten and easily expendable parts of American society – women prisoners. To incarcerated transgender and gender non-conforming people pronouns and titles are asked upon entry When I was booked into prison I was told that I was simply X37739 Now them they can choose where to stay: “Provide single cells house the person with someone else of their choice or move someone who poses a threat from places where they could access the person who has expressed concerns about their safety”.  In this way predators within the prison system have direct access to the person who has expressed safety concerns Everyone in prison comes face to face with danger every day This is not equality. The transfer requests are piling up and none of them involve transgender men who want to go to a men's prison The requests cannot be refused in order not to discriminate against: 1 including - but not limited to - his genitals or other physical characteristics 2 the sexual orientation of the detained person. This means that a man who potentially manipulates the system by presenting himself as non-binary or gender non-conforming has every right to serve his sentence in a women's prison serial rapist in a California prison who has completely stopped hormone therapy and is living openly as a man in a women's facility Even a violent rapist deserves more rights and more consideration for his safety than the prison community.  post traumatic stress disorder a long history of physical sexual and mental abuse as well as having had relationships that have damaged them These women are not only serving the sentences inflicted on them but also the added penalty of constantly living in fear that one of your new cellmates might be one of those people who abuses the new law The women's prison has a completely different layout from the men's prison women are housed in units with four corridors There are dividers that cover only the central part of the body You take a shower and obviously go to the bathroom in your cell There is no way to avoid exposing yourself to your cellmates whether you intend to or not There are two-person cells with showers at the end of each corridor There is no separation between bed and toilet Add to these already harsh conditions other daily activities such as Taking a shower in the presence of someone with different genitalia is a huge omission by lawmakers for women's safety and mental health California's women's prison was operating at 131.7% capacity aabsolute and intentional indifference towards women. My team receives new information every day from women who have completely lost faith in the system which They live in fear and wonder how they will be able to defend themselves when things get bad They feel betrayed because they were not involved in the discussions and polls on SB132 Women are excluded from the protection promised by Department of Corrections with the verbose formulas used by SB132 which mirrors the Equality Act.  What is happening in California's women's prisons is the erasure of women's rights It starts from the lowest level of society by removing the rights of women who have been forgotten This is what will happen in the entire state when the law passes as is.  Thank you for your concern and the opportunity to share the concerns of my community and give a voice to those who have none Please read the Attached letters A and B from detained women explaining what is happening because of the law.Respectfully I am an inmate in the CIW (California Institution for Women) I do not agree with Senate Bill 132 written by Senator Scott Weiner and irresponsibly signed by Governor Newson I am a victim of domestic violence and rape What will happen if one of these sex offenders who have penises rapes us I ask that revisions be made to SB132 that address these serious safety concerns LETTER BTo whom it may concernMy name is Heather Knauff I disagree with Senate Bill 132 written by Senator Scott Weiner and irresponsibly signed by Governor Newson which says the law will support the CDCR community of transgender non-binary and intersex inmates. This will allow sex offenders to exploit women who are physically disadvantaged compared to men. We share very small spaces There are already men who have become women who have turned back into men to exploit this weak system which leaves the population of already disadvantaged women to suffer even more at the hands of sex offenders Much of the news published by Feminist Post you won't read them anywhere else even with a small coming-of-age story that follows Evie and her friends as they fall further and further into the fictional world of “The King” Ahead of its reading at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre we spoke with rising playwright maguire wilder and director Maiya Pascouche to find out more can you introduce yourself and let us know what your journey was getting into theatre?  the playwright of 4 girls the first letter e I think there’s something really special about a community of strangers and friends gathering to breathe and speak and sing and feel together I came to theatre really young but didn’t start writing until I was about 18 or 19 I was studying drama at NYU Tisch and honestly thought I was going to be a director until I found playwriting but there’s something about working on a play that makes me feel a little more connected to my truest self.  the director of 4 girls the first letter e I started as an actor studying drama at NYU Tisch After years of forming a richly emotional connection to plays through interrogation of text I wanted to discover how text lives in tandem with and through the lenses of multiple artistic mediums and transitioned to directing I learned that I feel my proudest when leading a room holding space for fellow artists and their bold stories I live for the rush of getting on our feet and building a world together The light behind a playwright’s eyes as they hear their words out loud for the first time and the ferocity with which they edit their work relentlessly until freeze - lovingly calling out maguire here The compassion that fills the room when everyone accepts that nothing is perfect and will never be and that’s why we make theater instead of film.  4 girls the first letter e was one of the first full length plays I ever really finished and Maiya and I were working on a production that was shut down due to Covid-19 but 4 girls still feels like who I am and who I want to be as a writer and a human Some of my other plays include In Company With: a racing ballet The Things We Pull Up (out of the ground) or at night by the river in the daytime (which I believe you can find an excerpt of online if you look hard enough) I’m currently writing a novel and a new musical with Maiya (coming to New York in November!) so there is also definitely more on the way!  I’m influenced by whoever I’m reading and whoever I’ve read Reading someone else’s really beautiful or jarring sentence is usually what lets me keep writing when I feel stuck so whatever is exciting me or fascinating me intellectually is probably what I’m going to write about.  What are the challenges of writing a new play that maybe people don’t realise?  theatre is about community and the act of translation from page to director/designer to actor to audience both for yourself and the capacity of written language Theatre is ultimately a medium that needs to be seen and heard the fullest emotional life you can draw from the world and the characters within it you have to let the work filter through other peoples’ brains before your audience finds it which is different from other mediums of writing I find it very freeing that my work is merely one part of a much larger puzzle but it can be scary to let other people in when you care about a piece of text as much as you have to So 4 girls the first letter e is a new play can you tell us a little bit about it?  so here’s a little bit more info without giving too much away: Loosely inspired by the Slenderman stabbing of 2014 4 girls is a coming-of-age story that follows Evie and her friends as they fall further and further into the fictional world of "The King." When the line between reality and game play starts to blur how far will they go to save themselves from each other and the world around them This play explores friendship in the face of violence It asks: How does our trauma dictate our actions How are young girls being taught to grow up For those wondering whether this play will be for them what type of audience will it appeal to?  This play was written for and about anyone who’s ever been a young girl or cares for young girls We’re interested in stories that are big and impossible and an audience who is willing to meet us there We’re interested in building a theatrical space that juxtaposes safety with discomfort This play is for people who want to ask big questions This play would also be great for true crime lovers or anyone who got a little too into Slenderman in the 2010s!  What do you hope for the future for this play after your run in London or do you already have a plan?  We hope to build a community of friends and colleagues here in London This is our first production out of New York and we’re just so honored and excited to be making work with such an amazing team Of course we’d love to see this show picked up and taken to the National or the Royal Court or the Almeida Where can people come and see the show and find further information?  A staged reading of 4 girls the first letter e is on this weekend (the 9-11th of September) at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre HUB space. On Monday, the Financial Times reported that Saudi Arabia has withdrawn as much as $70bn (£46bn) from overseas investment funds to shore up its fiscal position in the face of tumbling oil prices Saudi Arabia’s published budget this year was based on oil trading at about $90 a barrel But because of costly ad hoc items such as royal largesse after King Salman’s succession and domestic security against the Isis threat the fiscal position is only in balance at about $110 The Saudi benchmark Tadawul All Share index has fallen by more than 30% in the past 12 months “They have enough reserves to sustain this situation for at least one year although it is very costly for them,” said Khairallah Khairallah a former managing editor of the Saudi-owned al-Hayat newspaper The International Monetary Fund is already predicting Saudi Arabia’s budget deficit to exceed $107bn this year Yet the budget announced for next year has marginally increased Prince Mohammed bin Salman Photograph: Charles Platiau/Reuters“The king is in charge of oil policy in the kingdom together with his son Mohammed bin Salman Mohammed bin Salman is also responsible for [state oil firm] Aramco The crown prince [Mohammed bin Nayef] is mainly focused on security These are the main players in Saudi Arabia They divide the responsibility,” said Khairallah Khairallah Prince Mohammed bin Salman is a new arrival to the Saudi senior leadership team but has already become one of the most controversial Although still very young by Saudi standards – officially 35 but rumoured to be much younger – he holds a multitude of posts including minister of defence and chair of the Council for Economic and Development Affairs which is the country’s main economic policymaking committee This makes him responsible for many of Saudi Arabia’s problems where rebel Houthis have come under attack from Saudi aircraft and ground forces Many Saudis are sickened by the sight of the Arab world’s richest country pummelling its poorest and as the cost in lives and treasure grows criticism is mounting that Prince Mohammed bin Salman– whose unofficial nickname is “Reckless” – rushed in without a proper military strategy or an exit plan Smoke billows upward after airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition on Houthi rebels in Sana’a Photograph: Yahya Arhab/EPA“This is a war against the Yemeni nation and against Yemen becoming independent,” said Sgt Maj Dakheel bin Naser Al Qahtani a former head of air force operations at King Abdulaziz airbase who defected from the Saudi armed forces last year “It has no legitimate political foundation and it is not what the people want,” he said “Ninety per cent of people in Saudi Arabia don’t want this to happen exactly the opposite of what the media shows “It has come about due to the absence of a national citizens’ establishment in Saudi Arabia and because Al Saud have put their own interests ahead of the national interest.” The letters in Arabic calling for the overthrow of the king have been read more than 2m times The letters call on the 13 surviving sons of Ibn Saud – specifically the princes Talal Turki and Ahmed bin Abdulaziz – to unite and remove the leadership in a palace coup before choosing a new government from within the royal family Prince Mohammed bin Nayef Photograph: AFP/Getty Images“Allow the oldest and most capable to take over the affairs of the state let the new king and crown prince take allegiance from all new rank of second deputy premier,” states the first letter “We are calling for the sons of Ibn Saud from the oldest Bandar to make an urgent meeting with the senior family members to investigate the situation and find out what can be done to save the country to bring in expertise from the ruling family whatever generation they are from.” The letters are unlike anything that has happened since King Faisal deposed King Saud in a palace coup in 1964 The prince behind the letters claims to have received widespread support from both within the royal family and society at large But only one other senior royal has so far publicly endorsed the letter which may be unsurprising given the Saudis’ brutal history of punishing political opponents Like many modern Arab countries Saudi Arabia is a 20th-century construction the royal family has kept the country together masterfully But as the economic and political situation in and around Saudi Arabia deteriorates the possibility of a profound change is growing more likely Forbes contributors publish independent expert analyses and insights I'm here to in Fortnite chapter 2 that comes to a conclusion this week with the “Dive!” loading screen I’m still not entirely sure what the plot was this season: something about a conflict between interdimensional doppelgangers and maybe a kind of a heist that’s now concluded with a daring boat chase over a hydroelectric dam And you’ll need to find the “E” hidden within to unlock the secret Sonara skin assuming you’ve been doing these the whole time This one is pretty straightforward: you can see the “E” clearly over a lamp post on the left side of the screen Our heroes here are racing under the hydroelectric dam by the lake in the southern portion of the map And here’s what the dam looks like on the ground: So head on over to the lamp post in question that this won’t unlock until you’ve completed eight tasks from the Dive you’ll now have unlocked the secret Sonara skin usually a kind of capstone achievement for the season It’s not the most elaborate challenge skin we’ve seen yet but the game seems to have pulled back from the massive multi-stage works like Ragnarok or the Prisoner and lots of people play this game primarily to collect skins and not so much for those elusive Victory Royales I’m still interested to see where this season goes from here: we haven’t had basically any movement but there’s now quite a bit of time left on this thing and A slow season may have been just what both the developers and the players needed after the lighting pace of Chapter 1 but even so I’d like to see a bit of Fortnite’s trademark map-based storytelling 2013 6:30 AMAn Obituary for the Letter EThe letter E the influential vowel and one of the most frequently used letters in the English language The vowel was 2,800 years old.Image: Diverse Images/UIGSave this storySaveSave this storySaveThe letter E an influential vowel and one of the most frequently used letters in the English language The cause was obsolescence in the face of emerging technology Long considered one of the most influential letters in the Roman alphabet at the turn of the century E had originally been heralded as the signal letter in the digital world the letter had suffered a series of debilitating setbacks that closely correlated with the rise of online applications (It narrowly defeated the phrase "sexual relations" by a vote of 31 to 28.) In awarding the distinction the organization noted the letter’s prolific role in words describing burgeoning online technology like e-mail Stewart Butterfield and Caterina Fake founded Flickr "The most compelling reason to remove the E," explained Ms "was that we were unable to acquire the domain Flicker.com .. The rest of the team were more in favor of other options such as 'FlickerIt' or 'FlickerUp' but somehow I prevailed." It was good news for the company but bad news for the letter the company was acquired by Yahoo for $35 million Soon many startups began jettisoning their Es like toxic assets a geosocial network application for gay men whose launch in 2007 may have marked the true end of E "There are a variety of reasons why Tumblr contains no E from branding considerations to environmental factors (fewer letters mean lower power consumption by our servers)," said the company’s editorial director absolute truth: Tumbler.com looks fucking stupid." The decline in E-ness was also hastened by the realities of venture capitalists "You take out the E from your company name and you increase the valuation by millions," said Lockhart Steele "Being E-free," agrees Esther Dyson a venture capitalist and an early investor in Flickr "distinguishes you from the run-of-the-mill vowel-infested world." the writing has been on the wall for years "What you are seeing is a very natural process - the omission of the letter in final unstressed syllables before /r/ is something that has been a feature of written English since Anglo-Saxon times," said Professor David Crystal a linguist and author of Internet Linguistics "'Gather' in Old English was spelled both 'gaderian' and 'gadrian,' for example." In other words the law of lex parsimonae doomed the E's of Flicker E is survived by his brothers, A, I, O and U; three daughters, é, ẻ, ě; and a son, ẹ. New parents Princess Eugenie and Jack BrooksbankDanny Martindale / WireImage via Getty ImagesYesterday, on Tuesday 9 February, it was announced that the Queen's granddaughter Princess Eugenie had given birth to a baby boy her first child with husband Jack Brooksbank celebrating some welcome good news in the midst of the third lockdown with news of a royal baby comes speculation over the name which bookies have been taking bets on for months now deliberating as to whether the couple will opt for a traditional or non-traditional moniker Sams Rosbottom, the Betfair spokesperson said: ‘We expected Princess Eugenie and Jack to be traditional, but in a shock move, royal punters are backing them to name their new baby boy after his great-grandfather. Philip was 25/1 but is now 4/1 favourite having been slashed overnight. Eugenie shared a photo holding her babys handPrincess Eugenie / PA Media‘Previous favourite Arthur has drifted to 5/1 to take its place alongside Godfrey – while there are a number of other male royals who he could be named after, including his great uncle Edward at 14/1, cousin William at 40/1 and grandfather Andrew at 66/1.’ Senior members of the family have usually been given names with historical significance, with Charles, William and even Eugenie all being names of royals in the past (Eugenie was the name of one of Queen Victoria's daughters, for example). Princess Eugenie on her wedding dayAndrew Matthews - WPA Pool / Getty ImagesOther names in the running include Thomas (8/1) Frederick was a popular name in the Georgian period and with Bridgerton proving such a cultural hit Princess Eugenie is not as tied to tradition as other members of the family so may opt for a more modern name than her cousin chose for his three children That was certainly the case for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex who named their first child Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor Some of the most popular names with the social set in recent years have included Theodore and Wilfred (the name of Prime Minister Boris Johnson's son) so it might be one of these names is chosen instead There has also been a vogue for names relating to nature with Silas and Cliff all regaining popularity in recent years Eugenie and Jack's child won't be a Prince or Princess This is because of a Letters Patent issued by King George V in 1917 which limited the title of Prince or Princess to only 'the grandchildren of the sons of any such Sovereign in the direct male line (save only the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales).' archivo diseño y arquitectura, mexico city (until august 9, 2013) provides an intimate look into the work of of the berlin studio manuel raeder. the exhibition is presented in partnership with centro de diseño de oaxaca (where it was first shown in late 2012) ‘the letter E is everywhere’ features a series of recent works that manuel raeder and his collaborator santiago da silva developed together with oaxacan artisans – these pieces explore how local techniques contrast and intertwine with mass production objects such as the monobloc chairs that are covered in woven palm leaves these original designs are complimented by pieces of mexican design from the archivo diseño y arquitectura permanent collection there is also a substantial collection of books on display designed by studio manuel raeder over the last ten years – the majority of which feature contemporary art image © archivo diseño y arquitectura —manuel raeder and santiago da silva told us more about their work and the exhibition DB: please can you tell us about your studio and the work you produce?MR: I founded the studio about ten years ago now there are three of us posters and other graphics for contemporary art galleries and artists in the last few years we’ve been asked to design exhibitions and installations – many of which explore the idea of how to exhibit books – the idea of how a book is experienced in a space – exploring how you display an archive of books DB: how did this current exhibition come about?MR: centro de diseño de oaxaca invited us to exhibit our books there and spend a couple of months there exploring the region and thinking how we might produce some new works informed by this experience we were more than happy to come and explore how we might be able to work with local artisans SdS: we wanted to explore how things that are made in a specific part of the world could be juxtaposed with things that are universal and how those relationships might be realized the exhibition features two stands that display artisanal objects typical of oaxaca – some of these are shown in the finalized state while others are shown ‘in-process’ to highlight how they are made DB: what have been some of your personal highlights from the whole experience of this exhibition?SdS: the whole process has been great and perhaps it’s still to soon to know what are ‘highlights’ as it’s ongoing but collecting all of the work from ten years and thinking how to display it in the context of mexico was something that we enjoyed and that made us think a lot about routes we can explore in the future MR: it’s raised a lot of questions for ourselves and hopefully for visitors and the collaborators such as what are the boundaries between design and crafts how can design create a dialogue with people who experience it how can we help people question consumerism of course more practical issues as in how do we display artworks manuel raeder and santiago da silva portrait © designboom about provide you with an insight into the fascinating world of musical instruments that start with the letter E let’s dive in and explore these 16 amazing instruments The Edakka is a traditional percussion instrument from Kerala It’s an hourglass-shaped drum made of wood and has two heads covered in leather The player holds it with one hand while striking its surface with the other hand using sticks or fingers Its sound is unique and quite different from other drums due to its distinct shape and design Playing the Edakka requires skill as well as practice There are several techniques used when playing this instrument such as finger tapping Different rhythms can be created by varying the speed of these techniques there are various ways to hold your hands to produce different sounds on the Edakka; this includes changing the angle at which you strike each head of the drum or hitting both sides simultaneously for a more sustained sound The music produced on this instrument is often used in classical Indian dance performances but it can also be heard in folk songs and religious ceremonies throughout southern India This type of percussion adds depth and complexity to any composition that uses it creating a powerful dynamic effect that few other instruments can achieve This ancient musical tradition continues today; experienced players still use their skills to pass down knowledge about how to play the Edakka through generations so that future musicians may appreciate its beauty and versatility is a unique instrument that is native to Estonia It’s made from sheepskin and consists of two parts: the toru (tube) and pill (bag) The tube has several holes which allow air to pass through it while the leather bag stores air so it can be released when playing one must use their fingers and/or breath control to stop or start notes by controlling the flow of air in different ways Although these traditional instruments have been around for centuries they are still used today mainly at folk music festivals throughout Estonia Its sound adds an interesting texture to any composition as its tone is often described as being “whistling-like” due to how air passes through the instrument some players will even add vocal sounds into their performances using techniques such as humming or singing along with their playing Estonian bagpipes require a great deal of skill and practice in order to master them; experienced players dedicate many hours perfecting their craft so they can create beautiful melodies This type of musical tradition brings together people from all listen to those who have dedicated years mastering this wonderful art form The Eesti Torupill allows musicians from all over the world to come together and appreciate its beauty and complexity through performance – something that few other instruments can offer Moving away from the bagpipe and into a more accessible instrument these small percussive instruments are incredibly versatile and relatively easy to learn how to use With their simple design consisting of two halves of an eggshell filled with beads or granules that create a rattling sound when shaken they can be added to any musical composition for an interesting effect Not only are egg shakers great for creating unique percussion sounds but they also provide teachers with the opportunity to introduce rhythm concepts such as pulse and subdivision These concepts can then be reinforced through activities like having students play together while counting out beats or clapping rhythms because of their lightweight construction and low cost egg shakers do not require much maintenance on the part of the player which makes them perfect for anyone looking to expand their instrumental toolkit without breaking the bank there is no need to worry about getting too loud – since these instruments are meant to be played quietly – so it’s possible to practice or jam with other people without worrying about disturbing nearby neighbors Egg shakers offer an exciting way for aspiring musicians to explore rhythm in detail and add layers of texture to songs without making too much noise (or spending too much money) This makes them an ideal choice for those who want something portable and affordable that still provides plenty of creative potential let’s now explore a more traditional instrument: the eight-string guitar This unique variation of the classic six-string model has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its versatility and range of tones that can be produced it allows players to create complex chords and melodies that would otherwise not be possible on a standard guitar The extra strings also provide added sonic possibilities such as allowing for alternate tunings or layering different sounds together they give musicians access to low notes that are difficult to achieve with just six strings; creating an opportunity for deeper sonic exploration Not only does this increased range make them perfect for solo performances but also open up new avenues when writing music and arranging songs eight-string guitars offer several advantages when compared to regular models because there’s no need for two separate sets of tuning pegs (one set per string pair) these instruments tend to have much lower action than conventional guitars resulting in better playability and faster playing speeds – great news for those who want to shred eight-string guitars present a great option for anyone looking to expand their musical horizons without having to learn an entirely new instrument from scratch Whether you’re a beginner looking for something easy yet powerful or an experienced player wanting more creative control over your music Continuing our exploration of musical instruments This single-stringed instrument is a popular choice for folk music and Sufi devotional songs across South Asia and East Africa as well as being used in some Western styles such as blues and jazz It has a unique sound that can be adjusted through various playing techniques – from fast strumming to slow slides – allowing musicians to express a wide range of emotions with just one string The most obvious feature of the ektara is its size; it’s small enough to fit comfortably into any musician’s hands while still producing an impressive volume it’s often seen accompanying singers or soloists who don’t have access to bigger drum sets or percussion kits it also stands out on its own when played by itself – offering versatility and complexity rarely found in other similarly sized instruments It goes without saying that many players find the ektara incredibly enjoyable to use Its light weight makes it easy to carry around while its low maintenance requirements ensure that you won’t need more than basic tune-ups every once in awhile its simple design allows even novice players to get started quite quickly – perfect for those wanting an accessible way into learning about traditional music the ektara is certainly worth considering if you’re looking for a versatile yet compact addition to your repertoire With its ability to generate diverse sounds ranging from delicate plucks to thunderous notes there’s no doubt it will add plenty of colour and expression wherever it’s used let’s move on to a more modern instrument – the electric bass guitar An essential component of many genres and styles this four-stringed instrument has been used by both amateur musicians and professionals alike since its inception in the 1950s Its low frequency range makes it ideal for laying down funky rhythms or providing solid foundations for other instruments to build upon – no wonder it’s become so popular electric bass guitars don’t require as much effort when playing Their strings are thinner than regular guitar ones meaning you won’t have to press down too hard with your fingers in order to get a clear tone their pickups provide an amplified sound that can be heard over even loud drums and percussion – making them perfect for live performances A major advantage of using an electric bass is its versatility; while they usually feature either 4 or 5 strings (most commonly 4) some models come equipped with additional features such as effects pedals which allow players to explore different sounds and notes there are countless different techniques available for exploring new musical avenues – from slapping and popping to advanced fingerstyle techniques like tapping and hammering-on/pulling off adding an electric bass guitar into your setup is certainly worth considering if you want to take your music up a notch whether played solo or alongside other instruments it provides endless possibilities for creative expression – ensuring you’re never stuck with just one sound ever again Continuing our exploration of electric instruments let’s take a look at the electric guitar This iconic instrument has been at the heart of popular music for decades and is heard in genres ranging from rock to jazz to country It’s no wonder that it remains one of the most widely used instruments today The sound produced by an electric guitar is distinct from that of other stringed instruments due to its ability to be amplified players can use effects pedals and other devices to create unique sounds through distortion or reverb – something which acoustic guitars simply cannot do because they don’t require as much effort when playing electric guitars are ideal for both beginner and experienced musicians alike electric guitars usually have six strings (although some models may come with seven) The combination of these strings allows for more complex chords and melodies than would otherwise be possible on a four-stringed instrument while many people focus on rhythm techniques like strumming or picking there are also advanced techniques available such as tapping or hammering-on/pulling off – perfect for soloing over riffs or creating intricate melodic lines electric guitars offer plenty of potential for self-expression; whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your skills this versatile instrument should definitely not be overlooked With its wide range of tones and capabilities it’s easy to see why it continues to remain so popular amongst musicians across all genres let’s take a look at the electric piano this instrument is simply an electronic version of the classic acoustic piano we all know and love – but with some distinct advantages it uses strings or pads to produce sound instead of hammers hitting metal strings like regular pianos do This can be advantageous for those looking for more nuanced control over their sounds since you have greater flexibility when programming different tones because they don’t need to be tuned regularly (like acoustic pianos) electric keyboards are much easier to maintain over time Another great thing about electric pianos is that they can come in various sizes and configurations making them perfect for both studio recording and live performances alike From large 88-key versions with weighted keys to smaller MIDI controllers without any physical keys at all; there’s something out there for everyone many digital models also offer additional features such as built-in effects (reverb/delay) or drum loops which make jamming along even more fun electric keyboards typically cost less than traditional acoustic ones – making them ideal if you’re just starting out or working on a tighter budget having access to such a wide variety of instruments opens up plenty of creative possibilities too With so much potential available at your fingertips No doubt about it: Electric pianos are versatile tools capable of producing beautiful music regardless of
