Venice
Venice might be the city break of all city breaks
You should come to this beloved Italian city for its cobbled streets
magnificent art galleries and gondoliers in stripey shirts
it does beach holiday vibes just as well.
a very not-well-kept secret is that there’s a whole host of beautiful
serene beaches just a short trip out of the city
All of them can be reached via a quick ferry or train
sand and a much-needed escape from the city
here are the best beaches near Venice.
Photograph: Shutterstock.comVenice’s most popular nearby beach is
It’s close to Venice and suits family vacations
It’s also worth noting that the nightlife scene here is much more varied and exciting than Venice’s own – expect bars open until later at night with prices that will be more in your favour as well
Photograph: Courtesy Tripadvisor/JW MarriottOne of the closest beaches to Venice is Isola delle Rose, a 25-minute ferry ride from San Marco freely accessible by island patrons. The JW Marriott rehabilitated the entire island a while back
adding a Michelin-star restaurant and an outstanding spa to the local experience
You can spend the day here indulging in some of the island’s posh services and enjoy the quiet of the private beach waterfront where very few tourists are found
Photograph: Shutterstock.comYou have to pay to enter some of Lido’s beaches
Alberoni is popular with beachcombers and naturalists who revel in the complete serenity of it all: the space is unencumbered by beach umbrellas and chairs
the clear waters swell with moored boats and water sports enthusiasts
We promise the scene becomes tolerably crowded
Photograph: Shutterstock.comThis is a lively port on the west coast of Cavallino-Treporti filled with chill (and undeveloped) beaches and aided by frequent ferry traffic to and from Venice
key attraction that adds character to the nearby ruins of historic Venetian forts that were vital in protecting the city
the private island Santa Cristina is the ultimate beach experience for those seeking absolute privacy
The former Swarovski family compound boasts private beach access and a stunning pool and outdoor lounge for those who prefer experiencing the beach from a distance
The island is filled with vineyards and flowering gardens where wild peacocks and grouse scurry and roost
Photograph: Shutterstock.comBibione is not as popular as other destinations near Venice
The beaches here smell like heady pine from the nearby forests that cook in the sun all day
there are umbrellas and chairs for rent and the option to escape the beach for a long
which you can access by train from Venice.
Photograph: Shutterstock.comThe beach at Sottomarina di Chioggia is superb if you’re looking for clean sandy stretches filled with restaurants
and bike rentals from the nearby Hotel Mediterraneo
There is also an excellent sea-front bike path that leads to Chioggia (home to a delicious fish market and restaurants)
also referred to as “little Venice”
Photograph: Shutterstock.comJust south of Chioggia is Rosolina Mare
one of the longest and widest beaches in the region
rarely crowded except on summer holidays and most of August
The bike paths here are flat and easy to navigate and the local seafront hotels
are home to pools and tennis courts used by plenty of visitors daily
Photograph: Shutterstock.comFrom Rosolina Mare
you can cycle along the bike path to Albarella
a stunning private island and nature reserve with vast groves of Poplar trees
The island is virtually free of cars and boasts Europe’s largest saltwater pool
Full disclosure: you must be a guest of the Albarella Golf Hotel to access the beaches
The resort’s staff can also help you organize deep sea diving and sailing excursions

Roslyn DeeSat 22 Jul 2023 at 03:30It’s a sunny morning and I’m on my way to an Italian beach resort — by bus
I want to visit a place I’ve been intending to for a very long time
even with its route making a stop at Marco Polo Airport
As I board the bus at Piazzale Roma at the top of the Grand Canal
my parents loaded me into the car at home in Co Derry
my father pointed the vehicle in the direction of Italy
and off we went on a great summer adventure
Journey’s end was a campsite on the edge of Jesolo and
a great time was had and my parents vowed we’d go back another time
on a journey I am hoping will transport me back to my childhood
I’m not really sure what I expect of Lido di Jesolo in 2023
sizing up the mixed bag of other passengers travelling with me — three families with young children (two French
a group of five teenage girls who got on in Venice and seem to be on a day trip
a well-dressed older gentleman complete with Panama hat
and lots of middle-aged Italian women who are probably either returning home to Jesolo
I try to recall what I can of the town back in the 1960s
but all I really remember is the beach — a magnificent 15km stretch of sand running along the edge of the Adriatic
tacky seaside resort with a kind of ‘kiss me quick’ Venetian Riviera vibe
I booked a room in the three-star Hotel Orizzonte
no-frills room that even has a large balcony with a side view of the sea
access to my own sunbed in the Orizzonte’s ‘section’ on the beach
and a delicious breakfast the following morning
A 10-minute stroll from the bus station sees me check in to the hotel and then out I go
Immediately behind the pedestrian pathway that runs along the back of the beach
One after another and ranging from three to five-star
all with their own perfectly arranged sunbeds and meticulously raked sand
and while this kind of set-up would normally be my worst holiday nightmare
I find that the utter spotlessness and sense of order
coupled with the fact that it’s still early in the season and not heaving with holidaymakers
helps contribute to the feeling that I have stumbled upon a gem of a place
a few standard seaside shops selling beach balls
and some ‘market’-style clothes outlets (I carry home a lovely white shirt for €20)
Lido di Jesolo is definitely more chic than I was expecting; there’s now a distinct Riviera feel to the town that also manages to convey a sense of wellbeing
It’s not just the nostalgia — I am genuinely happy to be in this seaside town
that were it not for a planned public transport strike the next day
after dining in a restaurant recommended by an Italian friend and packed with locals
I wander back to my hotel through the darkening streets
feeling sad to be leaving the following day
It might have taken me more than 50 years to return to Lido di Jesolo
Fly from Dublin to Venice Marco Polo airport with either Ryanair (ryanair.com) or Aer Lingus (aerlingus.com)
The 10A bus from Marco Polo runs every hour to Lido di Jesolo (40-minute journey) and costs €14.40 return
High-season rates for a double room including breakfast at Hotel Orizzonte (horizzonte.com) from around €200
Check out Topflight (topflight.ie) for package holidays to Lido di Jesolo
Not so much a beach resort as a close-to-beaches resort
Tavira itself is one of the gems of the Algarve
With accommodation and restaurants aplenty
Tavira is the genuine article — and with stunning beaches like Tavira Island right on its doorstep
Conil lies south of Cadiz on the Costa de la Luz
lovely sandy beaches and the crystal-clear water of the Atlantic
A popular destination for Spanish holidaymakers
it has a great choice of accommodation (including camping facilities) and restaurants
An understated seaside town on the north-west coast of the island which retains its authentic Greek atmosphere
Kissamos-Kastelli comes with its own beach (and others nearby)
an archaeological museum and a plethora of seaside tavernas serving delicious fish and overlooking the beautiful bay

Italian architect Stefano Pujatti of ELASTICOfarm has realized a housing complex on stilts in Lido di Jesolo, a popular resort town close to Venice
Named ‘Le bâtiment descendant l’escalier’
or ‘the building descending the stairs’
the residential floors are arranged in the form of an arc above a forest of steel columns
generating an open public space below where people can meet and socialize
Image © iwan baan | @iwanbaan
Stefano Pujatti sought to break away from the ‘banal uniformity’ of surrounding buildings and forge ‘an effective relationship between private and shared spaces and the public realm of the city.’ This is actualized by the public ‘ghost’ floor that separates the commercial program at street level from the eight residential floors above.
it promotes sociability among neighbors and welcomes passersby
which ideally extends the public realm into the building
is characterized by an exuberant structural solution that allows the upper floors to disengage from the urban fabric,’ says ELASTICOfarm
The idea of promoting social interaction between neighbors also extends to the circulation system and the common areas located on each floor
Another key element of the design was to maximize sunlight to the apartments
the gently arched residential volume is articulated by generous terraces on the North facing elevation that project out to afford views of the Venetian lagoon and the Dolomite mountains in the distance.
‘this urban intervention plays the ambiguous role of responding to the needs of investors just as it critiques and revisits the given functional and spatial program
the project explores new possibilities and promotes a different way in which private residences engage with the urban as well as the natural environment and its inhabitants.’

A British tourist found wine and mugs with pictures of Adolf Hitler’s face and Nazi slogans in a supermarket near Venice
which were decorated with Third Reich symbols
A mug called Tazza Del Fuhrer (Fuhrer’s Cup) was going for £5
which were labelled “Sieg Heil and Ein Volk
She had been shopping in the Italian resort of Lido Di Jesolo when she came across the bottles
and tweeted: “I knew fascism was on the rise but still shocked to see these in the local supermarket.”
Another tourist, Peter Davanzo, told Metro Online that he had found similar wine bottles in a small shop in Foggia
He said: "The owner had turned his back on me while he was serving another customer and I quickly took [pictures] without him noticing me."
The owner of the supermarket in Venice, Stefano Nopetti, told La Repubblicalast year: “It’s just business.”
Mr Nopetti said: "I have been selling the bottles for 30 years
no one has ever forbidden me to do so."
But if people buy them – and these bottles

Autumn months often result in waterspout events over the Mediterranean sea
The seas remain very warm and provide fuel for storms
In the case of the upper low and lack of winds/shear
the environment becomes conducive for waterspouts
a waterspout outbreak occurred over the Adriatic Sea
Clear air mass within the much colder air aloft has provided great observing conditions
so waterspouts were nicely visible even at a large distance
A number of waterspouts occurred across the north-central Adriatic Sea
Here is an example of the waterspout seen from Lido di Jesolo near Venice
Let’s get into some more details about the event and the pattern…
The ongoing pattern over Europe reveals an impressive upper-level cold-core low
The pattern is resulting in unsettled weather conditions over the region
producing severe storms with flooding and waterspouts over the still very warm seas
The marked area is the northern Adriatic Sea region which has developed a waterspout outbreak this weekend
This large upper-level low is well-visible also on the water vapor satellite imagery
We can see two cores in this broad circulation
one over southern Germany and another over Romania
The third wave is entering the northwestern Mediterranean and will lead to rapid cyclogenesis over Italy tonight
Here is the ECMWF model of the large upper-level low rotating over central Europe
The low gradually weaken over the next few days while another deep trough/low enters western Europe into early October days
Graphics are provided by Wxcharts.com
the southern edge of a large upper low was spreading south over the Alps into northern Italy
nearly 23 °C warm sea and very cold mid-level temperatures formed the first storms near Lignano
The explosive storm towers were illuminated by frequent lightning flashes and occasional cloud-to-ground lightning bolts
What made the scene even more remarkable at that time was a crescent moon shining through the clouds from the west. A combination of a lightning storm over the Adriatic Sea and the Moon created a magical sight! Storm chaser Marko Korosec was on the scene
storms were slowly spreading further south and merge into a large complex of storms
A large elephant trunk tornado/waterspout developed under one intense storm cell
With the use of high ISO sensitivity and longer exposure
The waterspout event over this part of the Adriatic lasted for about 20 minutes when the rope out stage was seen
The waterspout has become longer and extends far away from its initial connection with the parent cloud base
Storm chaser Niccolo Ubalducci was observing the event from the Fiorenzuola Di Focara
Niccolo reported more than 15 waterspouts have been visible between 10.30 pm and 3.30 am
The view of the explosive towers was best from his position
there were two or even three waterspouts visible at the same time
Another storm chaser, Entoni Novosel
was observing the complex of storms from Pula
Attached are photographs revealing two waterspouts and CG lightning strikes
The right one was very large and probably strong
Storm chaser Sandro Puncet was observing storms from Mali Losinj
A quite spectacular scene with explosive storm towers and lightning barrage
A tiny waterspout can be seen in the back near the left lightning bolt
Here is another shot of a different waterspouts Sandro photographed
The events were to the west of the island Mali Losinj
The line of storms (flanking line) was extended this far south from the main storm complex further north
Here are some additional shots by storm chaser Gregor Vojscak who was also observing the event from Lido the Jesolo
In northwestern Istra (Umag & Novigrad, Croatia), storm chaser Maja Kraljik was observing the complex from the eastern side
while the lightning show was adding a great illumination of the clouds
Croatia in the late morning on Sunday as new storms have developed west of the Istra peninsula
Forecast discussion about this pattern earlier this week:
A waterspout is an intense columnar vortex (usually appearing as a funnel-shaped cloud) that occurs over a body of water
Water is normally very warm while cold air exists along
Waterspouts exist on a microscale and their environment is only a few kilometers width
They can also develop from a towering cumulus cloud while no lightning is present
more than one waterspout can occur in the same vicinity at the same time
It has happened several times already over the Mediterranean region
Or over the of for example over the Lake Michigan
Those are referred to as “tornadoes over water”
as they form from the mesocyclones in a supercell storm
Their occurrence is identical to land-based tornadoes in connection with severe thunderstorms
Waterspouts that are not associated with a rotating updraft of a supercell thunderstorm are known as “non-tornadic” or “fair-weather waterspouts”
Tornadic waterspouts have occurred over the southern Mediterranean (e.g Taranto Gulf) or over the Ionian Sea in the past
Severe Weather Outlook / Forecast for Europe – Sept 25th
Chilly start of October is forecast as an intense cold blast spreads into the eastern US

Sculptors from around the world return to Jesolo, a seaside resort near Venice in north-east Italy, for an annual sand festival dedicated to religious art.
The 2023 edition of the popular event, celebrating its 21st year, can be visited until 4 February 2024.
On display are 12 monumental sculptures, made entirely of sand, depicting Nativity scenes as well as messages of peace.
The 14 participating sculptors from around the world have used thousands of tons of compacted sand to create their masterpieces which appear to be carved from stone.
Instead the works have been created with the most ephemeral of materials - without a drop of glue used - relying only on skill and water.
Sand artists at work in Jesolo. Photo Comune di Jesolo
This year's event is dedicated to the first living Nativity created by St Francis in Greccio 800 years ago
co-ordinated by new artistic director David Ducharme from Canada
Ducharme takes over from American Richard Varano, the festival's long-serving artistic director who gained global recognition in 2018 when he oversaw the creation of a giant sand Nativity scene at St Peter's Square in the Vatican
the Jesolo event has welcomed more than 1.7 million visitors over the last two decades
raising over €800,000 for international charities and local associations
For more information about the festival and for visiting details see the Jesolo Sand Nativity website

Le bâtiment descendant l’escalier is the residential and commercial building that ELASTICOFarm just completed
a tourist seaside destination close to Venice
The building emerges with strength and determination amid suburban sameness to affirm the need for renewal and redemption from the banal uniformity of the surrounding constructions
it establishes an effective relationship between private and shared spaces and the public realm of the city
Its two programs — commercial at street level and residential in the 8 floors above — are separated by a “ghost” floor that provides an open and partially covered area of approximately 2,000 square meters for amenities
is characterized by an exuberant structural solution that allows the upper floors to disengage from the urban fabric
A forest of steel columns supports the residential floors which
Conceived as a vineyard that is arranged to enjoy maximum sun exposure
the upper portion of the building accommodates apartments each endowed with large terraces and open views towards the great Venetian lagoon
The circulation system for the residences extends the idea that guides the project by offering itself as a device that promotes encounters among the inhabitants
Common and private areas are located on all floors
with balconies that distinguish the north- facing side of the building
An unexpected appearance in which colors and materials play an important role in the perception of the new architectural organism
the architecture firm led by Stefano Pujatti
has carried out a series of groundbreaking projects
in various contexts: from suburban to vast natural settings
Stefano is one of the most talented and lively Italian architects of his generation
Le bâtiment descendant l’escalier is the outcome of research and experimentation
“this urban intervention plays the ambiguous role of responding to the needs of investors just as it critiques and revisits the given functional and spatial program
the project explores new possibilities and promotes a different way in which private residences engage with the urban as well as the natural environment and its inhabitants.”
The quality of this project is measured in its ability to exploit the location and the building type to create an architecture in which communal space becomes the protagonist of a brilliant experimentation.
Jesolo is the Italian seaside town with the largest beach extension
The City is part of a once insular territory which only became a touristic destination in the 1930’s
Large reclamation works have connected the mainland to
those islands where during the centuries small farms and fishermen villages had been built
Today Jesolo is part of a vast territory and finds itself near both Venice and the Dolomites
giving the city a privileged position attracting not only local visitors
Jesolo Lido is the most touristic part of this city and extends for almost 15 km along streets which run parallel to the sea
The intervention area is located between via Bafile and via Aquileia
The area was occupied by a National History Museum
The building itself had little to no value
The urban plan designed by the city foresaw the demolition and relocation of the museum and the construction of a residential and commercial building
The area is surrounded by residential properties with commercial activities on the ground floor dating back to the fifties and sixties with no architectural qualities and uneven in shape
The new building stands out and appears out of scale when compared to its surroundings
it still tries to mitigate its presence and avoid impacting as much as possible the views and the lesser qualities of the other buildings
has a clear commercial vocation that the project has attempted to maximize without compromising the residential potential of the area overlooking Piazza Carducci
This area that links our site to the most active pedestrian street in the city inspired us to create a connection with via Aquileia as well
activating the entire urban block at different levels
Piazza Carducci uses the new building as a background and as a means of connecting with the district to the north.
To make the most of both the commercial and residential potential of the area
we have decided to clearly separate the two parts in the building by interposing a “ghost” floor between them
The roof of the commercial space became a new artificial territory and a stilt structure capable of supporting the eight residential floors rising above it
The new apartments can therefore enjoy an open and partially covered area of approximately 2.000 square meters for amenities while also being raised above the street noise and organized in a way to promote sociability between the neighbours
This privileged floor can also be crossed on the perimeter by people wishing to reach via Aquileia without going around the building
A large scenographic staircase puts the level of the podium in contact with the piazza and the commercial street
The displacement of the ground floor in section provides a natural connection between street and commercial activities creating a new relationship between building
Thanks to this new “empty” floor
the residential building is able to be developed independently from what is happening at street level
the suspended building takes the form of an arc and organizes the apartments so that
they are enriched with large terraces and open views towards the sea
each unit makes the most of its position and the only qualitative variable is given by the floor level on which the apartment is located
This is a building designed to house holiday homes and
designed to give maximum use of its outdoor areas
For the most part the apartments consist of two bedrooms
Only the apartments on the higher floors are larger
The desire to design scenarios that promote the sharing of spaces within the condominium areas led us to imagine a distribution system for residences that would become the extension of the large podium space
The distribution system is thus conceived as a device that
promotes the meeting between the inhabitants
Common and private areas are arranged along the path defining an open volume connecting on all floors
It is a large empty volume overlooked by the walkways and the rest areas and from which you can see the great Venetian lagoon and the Dolomites as a backdrop
Four are the elements that make up this building: the commercial podium
the terraced residential block and the distribution system that defines an alternative space to the strictly private one
These elements assembled in the project in a not always predictable way produce spatial
morphological and perspective effects capable of surprising even those who live regularly in the building
The structure is one of the elements that formally characterizes this intervention
this construction is made up of three different elements that then define a fourth element represented by the great void of the “phantom floor”
Each of these parts lives on its own functional and even structural logic
The commercial floor connected to the basement of the car park is structured on an orthogonal mesh that is denser in the basement and rarefying on the commercial floor to allow maximum flexibility and the best arrangement of the supermarket shelves
Those structural pillars supports the amenity spaces where the relax area
the solarium and a large swimming pool are located
the suspended residential building uses concrete structural partitions which
define the individual apartments in a regular way
allowing the best possible use of the internal spaces
the walkways are supported by a structural system that uses the supporting walls of the residential block to hang a lighter structure made up of metal beams
Those connected to each other then support the walkways
This part of the structure is stiffened by the weight and by the arrangement of the parapets which also act as wall beams in some areas
These three systems use very different structural logics and
if the balconies and the residential volume manage to complete each other structurally
it is less intuitive to imagine a collaboration between the rarefied orthogonal structure of the commercial part and the radial arrangement of the structure of the residences
The void left by the “phantom floor” allowed us to explore a solution in which a new structural system such as collagen connects the load bearing walls of the suspended block with the concrete pillars of the commercial part
The only apparent randomness of the stilted structure gives life to an organic space that characterizes the covered part of the phantom floor
The exhibit structure provides character to the space
the building seeks its own balance and in doing so it expresses that dynamism that the structural part tries to avoid
The choice of materials follows the logic of using
reinterpreting and reinventing what exists in the surrounding visual landscape
the theme of duration over time and the reaction of materials to the aggressive maritime climate have guided and suggested our choices
The commercial block that defines the podium by moving the ground floor to a higher level expresses its belonging to the earth through the use of bush- hammered exposed reinforced concrete
This hard concrete block rises from Piazza Carducci
expanding its size through the monumental stairway which uses the same stone material
changing its reflections and colours during the different hours of the day
The walls appear to be white because it is cladded with white mosaic tiles but when the grazing light of sunrise or sunset hits the surfaces the building shines a variety of different colours
This effect of colouring the light (and not the building) was achieved by using stucco of different colours in the joint between the glass tiles
The resistance to the maritime climate of the ceramic and glass mosaic cladding made the use of this material popular during the years of maximum building expansion in Jesolo
Despite the not very valuable examples left in the area
we considered it important to reinterpret this material in order to exploit both its resistance characteristics and the partly unexplored ones of material expressiveness
The distribution system of the suspended walkways imposes a strong vision of the building for visitors coming from the north
one where colour and matter play an important role in the perception of this new architectural organism
Inspired by the fishermen’s nets of the Venetian lagoon
the system of wire mesh railings uses the colours of green and blue
fading them from the first to the last floors of the building
The small coloured cabins arranged at the entrances to the apartments dot this elevation and in their irregular repetition recall the buoys used to support the fishing nets but also the cabins of the nearby beaches
The vegetation that occupies a large part of the surface of the “phantom floor” acts as a filter between public and private spaces
but also contributes to designing the covered and uncovered areas of the podium
The covered condominium area on the common floor will thus become a place of refreshment and coolness during the hottest and sunniest hours
the water level of the swimming pool and the wooden flooring of the solarium will complete this landscape designed for well- being
We tackled the issue of building holiday apartments thinking that we owe much of the ruin of our seascapes to this type of building
but at the same time believing that our country’s tourist vocation should be considered a great opportunity also for architectural research
This project plays the ambiguous role of responding to the needs of investors just as it critiques and revisits the given functional and spatial program
In responding to their demands, in fact
the project explores new possibilities and promotes a different way in which private residences engage with the urban as well as the natural environment and its inhabitants.

Rome: the eternal city's hotel scene is set for a boost with a new branch of Nobu Hotels and Six Senses hotels
But at the top of our must-visit list is the Bulgari Rome
This Italian brand owns hotels as far away as Shanghai and Bali
but is finally opening its flagship in its hometown coming this spring or summer
Housed in a 1930s modernist building composed mostly of travertine marble and red brick
it will surely be the epitome of the more-is-more Bulgari style with warm jewel tones
fantastic artwork and unashamedly luxurious suites
But let's start with a new small family-run hotel in Lido di Jeselo
The Salus Hotel in Jesolo (near Venice) is a family hotel located near the sea with forty-five rooms
For the restyling project of the Salus Hotel
ovre.design® focused mainly on the rooms and bathrooms
the exterior of the building and currently they are working on the common areas
"The owners' objective" according to architect Giulia Delpiano
"was to create a 'boutique' environment with a clear and linear style that could play with selected color tones." The result is a warm and inviting atmosphere where design and functionality come together to offer guests an unforgettable experience
The Salus Hotel is the perfect choice for those looking for a relaxing and comfortable stay in a family atmosphere
The Modica Boutique Hotel is located in the hinterland of one of the most beautiful and evocative coasts of Sicily
Unlike other hotels that focus on the more classic forms in the area
the Modica Boutique Hotel has a minimalist and elegant design that evokes the concept of a living room but at the same time opens its doors to a business audience
Each project realized by the CaberlonCaroppi studio is inspired by the Genius Loci
such as in the Boutique Hotel where we find a more urban atmosphere
the colors still refer to the Mediterranean Sea
the intense blue of the reception or the wood chosen for the floors are the best example
The Villa Igiea Hotel in Palermo tells the story of a meeting between two realities that have a long history and go forward with all the traditions and strength of a contemporary brand with a vision for the future
2 km from the port and in a panoramic position
Villa Igiea Hotel is part of the Rocco Forte hotel chain
The initial designs were ready in 2019 and the renovation work was completed in July 2021
The renovations were designed by the agency APIR Project
and it was one of the few villas in the Cervinia area built since the 1930s
however it was destroyed in 1980 by the convergence of two avalanches
the Valle d'Aosta region took several measures to protect the area and rebuild the villa
decided not to pursue the rebuilding and sold what was left to the Harrison family from London
who wanted to restore the villa to its former glory
The exterior of the villa is a protected monument and the rebuilding project - by the architectural firm Mariapia Bettiol of Aosta in collaboration with the interior designer from Valtellina
The engineer Bacchini - designer of the famous Allocchio-Bacchini radio
which enjoyed great success in the golden radio days - built the villa in 1936 by transporting the materials on mules
since at the time only a mule track connected the building to the outside world
The four double rooms on La Fenice's middle floor each have a private bathroom and shower
Each room has its own color palette that plays with shades of leather and velvet
while the curtains are wool and evoke alpine tradition in color and design
The result is a warm and inviting atmosphere where guests can relax after a long day on the slopes
Whether you are looking for adventurous days on the skis or relaxation in the mountains
La Fenice offers the perfect retreat in an idyllic setting
The Grand Hotel Cervino is a five-star hotel with an extraordinary transition between the exterior and interior spaces: "This" - says architect Mariapia Bettiol from Aosta - "was one of the starting points of the project
one of the pillars on which we focused from the beginning." The architect worked in a very particular space
creating a building that enjoys the view of nature both from the front and the back
with the imposing and spectacular presence of the Matterhorn
trying to recreate the idea of a mountain village
Interior designer Andrea Auletta's recent realization is the AG Hotels Group's 'IL Tornabuoni' hotel in Florence
a 5-star hotel designed to accommodate a high-level international audience
The Andrea Auletta Interiors studio designed the hotel in all its details "Each floor"
"required a different layout and in this context I dealt with every element
from the design of every single piece of furniture and accessory to the specific design of carpets
paintings and decorative objects." The hotel has 62 roomsand three different restaurants

The Bulgari hotel group is finally returning to Rome
Bulgari Rome is housed in a 1930s modernist building essentially made with travertine marble and red brick
It is around the corner from the Spanish Steps and features a restaurant headed by Niko Romito
known for his three-star Reale restaurant in a 16th-century monastery in Abruzzo
The Italian jewelry brand opened its first hotel nearly 20 years ago and followed with gleaming establishments in London
2023 brings with it the opening of Bulgari Roma around the corner from the Spanish Steps

with a courtyard garden and rooftop terrace
The building's façade is UNESCO-listed and carefully restored by the Six Senses group
which has also preserved breathtaking original features such as the central staircase
also be a Six Senses Spa - inspired by traditional Roman baths - and a restaurant that responds to the brand's organic ethos in the form of a classic trattoria
Rome is hot and Six Senses is leading the way
In the heart of Rome stands a prestigious building overlooking Via delle Muratte
along the road that connects the Pantheon to the Parliament and the Trevi Fountain
Formerly known as "The street of artists," it was home to the studios of painters
antique stores and artisanal workshops where high-quality creations were made
RPM Proget has realized an important project for a five-star luxury hotel
which is now fully operational and has been receiving positive feedback for months in the downtown Rome hotel industry
The hotel occupies four floors totaling about 3,000 square meters of an elegant historic building from the 19th century where the great composer Gaetano Donizetti lived between 1828 and 1837
Don Pasquale - one of the Bergamo composer's most successful works - is the name chosen for the gourmet restaurant
which has already become one of the hotel's highlights and a reference point for restaurants in this part of Rome
Working in the kitchen is the young chef Domenico Boschi
who focuses on tradition and picks up the most refined aspects of local gastronomy with a menu that offers the classics of Roman cuisine (from cacio e pepe to amatriciana and carbonara) reinvented to be more in line with the spirit of the restaurant
in addition to offering more exclusive dishes
The Grand Hotel Bristol reopens its doors on March 10, 2023 as a five-star lifestyle hotel. Offering a contemporary concept of hospitality and exclusive comfort, the hotel is the newest member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World
With the largest spa in any hotel in Liguria

sip cocktails in the lounge bar or try the brand new gourmet pizzeria by the pool
Following the Splendido Mare in Portofino in 2021
the Belmond Group now has plans to carry out renovations to the Splendido
"Our approach to the renovation project is similar to that of a portrait painter," said Martin Martin. The Splendido
an icon of the Ligurian seaside resort since the 1950s
will receive a gradual multi-phase makeover by the Martin Brudnizki Design Studio
with the first part to be completed as early as June next year
The first phase will involve the swimming pool and the Baroness Suite
the design team will meticulously restore the Splendido
a former Benedictine monastery dating back to the 16th century
with the first official debut in June 2023
The first phase of the renovation includes a new pool area and a new dining experience in a family villa at The Pool Grill Restaurant
as well as a complete makeover of the Baroness Suite

milan-based jm architecture has recently completed the ‘jesolo lido pool villa’ in venice
the project was constructed in only six months thanks to the prefab wood structure that makes up the stark white home
sustainability is at the forefront of the design
so much so that the construct incurs almost no energy costs throughout the year and its wildly different seasons
the entire perimeter of the structure is wrapped in 31 cm of insulation while windows and curtain walls are filled with argon gas establishing incredible r-values
the rooftop photovoltaic panels are capable of producing 10 kw
enough to power the interior/exterior led lighting scheme and the radiant floor heating
the main living area is encased in glass panels facing east and west
a paved patio contains inserted planters and an olive tree along the swimming pool which spans the entire length of the footprint
a staircase leads to the underground mechanical and storage rooms
a 4 meter overhang assures plenty of shade in the afternoon and covers an outdoor seating area
another smaller paved patio mirrors the olive tree on the west
the majority of the exterior is hardscaped
with vegetation that requires little attention. the bedrooms along the longer axis of the L-shaped footprint each look out over the pool
at the same time serving as a backdrop on which reflections and shadows are cast

As the plane begins its descent to Venice's Marco Polo airport
I'm staring out of the window at the birds-eye view over La Serenissima's maze of canals
But from up here it's also clear that Venice is not much more than a dot in a lagoon that stretches over 200 square miles
And this is just the beginning of a spider's web of wetlands – lagoons
deltas and wildlife reserves – that line the Adriatic as far as north Trieste
we pick up a hire car and set off along the Adriatic shore – the litorale – in the direction of the beach resort of Lido di Jesolo
The road from the airport is soon running along the northern edge of the Venice lagoon
the holidaymakers are all following signs to Jesolo
but we turn off right towards the vast valli da pesca (fish reserves) that occupy much of this northern part of the lagoon
we are stopped by the gatekeeper of a quite surreal bridge over the Sile canal: it's a ponte a pagamento (toll bridge) resting on second world war pontoons
and we part with 70 cents for the privilege of crossing
The lane gets narrower and narrower as we enter the barene
the otherwordly sandflats that stretch as far as the eye can see
There's not a house or a person in sight: just heron, egrets and geese skimming the still waters
As with many of the tracks across the barene, this one goes nowhere, but fortunately the dead end is also the site of Agriturismo La Barena
an ancient redbrick farmhouse overlooking the lagoon
This is the perfect place to get a feel for life in the wetlands: the Vianello family
"My grandfather built this house 100 years ago," Michele Vianello tells me
"and what I want is for tourists to come out here and see a different kind of Venice – the Venice of the lagoon
We could be a million miles from the crowds that teem around San Marco every day
This is another world; just listen to the silence – all you can hear is the quacking of ducks
the peaceful agriturismo bursts into life as people flock to its restaurant
The Vianellos grow all their own vegetables
and catch fish using traditional cogolo trapnets set across their fish reserve
Everyone opts for the seven-course set menu at €25
you could end up feasting on Veneto specialities such as chicken liver risotto
wild duck and beef with fiery horseradish and garlicky parsley pesto
or a delicate vegetarian menu using baby artichokes
radicchio and the distinctive cardoons that grow in the lagoon's sandy
Michele plots us a route through the misty barene
This sleepy fishing village is famed for its bilance da pesca
dozens of huge nets suspended over the estuary
that are winched down into the water once a day
but somehow still tolerated in Italy's grey economy
especially as all Cortellazzo's restaurants buy fish from the bilance
Caorle, a few miles further east, was immortalised by Ernest Hemingway in his 1950 novel Across the River and into the Trees
so it is tempting to stop off at its expansive lagoon
But apart from the brightly painted fisherman's cottages in the historic centre
Caorle has turned into a bland modern resort
Marano looks out on to one of the most stunning wetlands on this part of the Adriatic
and a birdwatching paradise in the Stella river delta
There are no beaches on this stretch of coast
with 300 of its 2,000 inhabitants still working as fishermen
where passengers sail across the lagoon and enjoy a meal of traditional lagoon cooking – freshly caught bream
Unique to these Adriatic lagoons are the casoni
spartan fishermen's huts built on isolated sandflats from canna palustre
bamboo-like reeds that grow in these estuaries
Marano has more than 30 beautifully preserved casoni
and he invites us for a lunch of freshly caught grilled cefalo
Glauco tell us that conditions used to be far more harsh: "The casoni date from before motorised boats
and it was too far to go back and forth each day
So living in the casoni was very rudimentary – no water
Women were not even allowed as conditions were too hard – sometimes a dozen fishermen to a hut
It is difficult today to imagine Aquilea as a grandiose Roman city
the whole of whose floor is taken up by fourth-century mosaics: the scenes of fishermen look little different from life in the casoni today
After Aquilea fell to the armies of Atilla the Hun
founding first Grado and then Venice itself
Arriving in Grado is spectacular: you drive for 3km across a low bridge that seems to float across the lagoon
Before hitting the town we take a boat out to the mystical Isola di Barbana
an island sanctuary that has been drawing pilgrims since medieval times
then carry on to the most eastern point of the lagoon
This is a commercial valle da pesca that has been returned to its original state
In spring and autumn, the ancient port of Grado is a delight, with fishing trawlers moored on a canal in the centre of town. In summer it morphs into one of the Adriatic's busiest beach resorts. There are dozens of bars and restaurants, but we timidly push open the door of what looks like a private osteria in Calle Merlato, the Circolo Sociale dei Graisani de Palù
and we learn that it is the bar of the fishermen's co-operative
But visitors are made to feel right at home
who could be Brian Clough's long-lost twin
Grado boasts many excellent seafood restaurants, but for good value – and the freshest fish – you'll find that it is difficult to beat this trattoria, which is owned by the fishermen's co-operative. Don't miss out on a steaming plate of spaghetti con cappelunghe, a dish of succulent razor clams, costing €12.• Riva Dandolo 22, +39 0431 80287, zeromiglia.it
Just by the waterfront of Cortellazzo, Al Gambero is an old-fashioned trattoria where the fish, straight off the boat, could not be fresher. Steer clear of the menu turistico, though, and follow the locals, ordering a €20 platter of grigliata di pesce – sole fillets, delicate red mullet, huge scampi, baby cuttlefish – easily enough for two. • Piazza del Granatiere, +39 0421 980375, ristorantealgamberojesolo.com
Claudio Moretti also owns the cheap and cheerful Osteria Porta del Mar in Marano Lagunare
but splash out a little more in this smart trattoria where he cooks creative seafood himself – grilled plump prawns on a bed of spinach
or sea bass carpaccio with tangy pickled vegetables
This cosy old-fashioned osteria is near the Tagliamento river. A glass of local Friulano white wine costs €1 at the bar of the wood-beamed dining room. Tasty rustic dishes include pumpkin risotto and thick steaks grilled on an open hearth. Main dishes cost €15, and there are also three beautiful B&B rooms at €70 a night.• Via La Rotta 21, +39 0431 520674, mirandamario.com
Just outside Aquilea, the friendly Gottardo family run this agriturismo B&B, and also make wine, raise pigs for salami and prosciutto, and cook the food served in their restaurant at weekends. Mains, from only €7, include roast duck with grilled radicchio, juicy pork chops or creamy baccalà, salt cod. • Via Grado 19, +39 338 1874794, larosta.it

Guide lists of the best beaches to visit in Italy and stunning social media shots of Italian coastlines have created hotspots of overcrowding
Some of these coastal gems are in danger of being destroyed by the hordes of tourists that descend each summer season
while others can simply be a chore to find a patch of sand where you can lay your towel
MAP: Which parts of Italy will get the most tourism this summer?
you can try one of the hundreds of gorgeous and environmentally sound spots throughout Italy
here are the beaches best avoided if you want to escape the masses
with alternative suggestions for a more relaxing Italian seaside getaway
The southern Italian region of Puglia has a coastline that could give the Maldives a run for its money
with the waters consistently ranked the cleanest in Italy
it’s one of the most popular holiday destinations among Italians
It’s also soared in popularity among international tourists in recent years
this means it’s hard to find a beach in Puglia that could be described as peaceful at the height of summer
despite the enormous number of beautiful beaches along Puglia’s particularly long coastline
a handful of names tend to crop up again and again on lists of ‘must-see’ or ‘most beautiful’ beaches in the region - meaning a lot of visitors tend to pack into the same areas
and some beaches are more crowded than others
READ ALSO: Ferragosto: Why the long August holidays are untouchable for Italians
While all of the below beaches are stunningly beautiful
often featuring breathtaking rock formations surrounded by turquoise waters
In summer you’ll need to get there at dawn in order to enjoy them before the hordes descend
Here are some alternatives that are lesser-known
Visiting Sardinia can sometimes be a double-edged sword
astoundingly beautiful white sand beaches and crystal turquoise waters
Some beaches and stretches of coastline face severe environmental pressure - and don't make for an enjoyable day out when you have to get there for 6am to grab a parking spot and a space to pitch your umbrella
Here are some beaches in Sardinia that are probably best avoided:
The incredible island of Sicily is a favourite destination for both Italian and international holidaymakers for good reason
Plus it has a longer summer season than the rest of the country
so there's more time to enjoy the beaches outside of August
visitors are often directed to the same few spots all summer long
The island has no shortage of stunning natural beaches
and those who venture off the beaten path will be richly rewarded - even if this means packing a picnic and forgoing sun loungers

While the following famous beaches deserve their top-ten spots on all the ‘most beautiful beaches’ lists
they’re likely to be extremely crowded in July and August:
Spiaggia dei Conigli (Rabbit Beach) - Lampedusa
Here are a few to try instead - though most have fewer services around
Veneto is not exactly the best place to go if you’re looking for crystal-clear waters and picturesque beaches girdled by rocky cliffs
the region’s beaches are for the most part narrow strips of fine sand with generally shallow seabeds and fairly decent waters
But Veneto is still an incredibly popular destination for beach-goers
The città d’arte (art cities) located just a few miles away from the coastline
and the relative proximity of both Austria and Germany all make Veneto a very appealing haven for holidaymakers
MAP: Which regions of Italy have the most Blue Flag beaches?
So it isn’t rare for the region’s most famed beaches to be packed during the summer months
Here are a few of the busier places that you might want to avoid:
This is where you might want to go instead:
Tuscany is the Italian region that offers the greatest variety of beaches of all
From narrow strips of white sand encircled by maritime pine groves to remote cale (coves) hidden away between cliffs and headlands
READ ALSO: What are the rules on wild camping in Italy?
The deep blue of Tuscany’s waters and the bonanza of nightlife venues skirting the coastline
prove irresistible to hundreds of thousands of both Italian and international tourists every summer
certain beaches in the region tend to get very crowded very quickly in July and August
The Romagna riviera is incredibly built up
with beach services offering hundreds of sunbeds and umbrellas that cover swathes of the wide and flat sandy beaches there
Although not known for its crystal clear waters like other parts of Italy
it's a popular area with tourists due to the convenience of back-to-back bars
READ ALSO: Ten ways to save money on your trip to Italy this summer
Some beaches get more packed out than others such as Rimini and Riccione
thanks to being popular with families for the former and being known as party central with youngsters for the latter
Here are the most overcrowded beaches in Emilia Romagna:
Some of the 'lidi' further north can be quieter
The Amalfi Coast draws vast numbers of visitors to Campania every year - but while its rocky cliffs make for an impressive backdrop
overcrowded beaches aren’t necessarily the best place to set up a sunbed
where the sea is so often polluted that swimming is officially banned - though this doesn’t deter large crowds of bathers from taking a dip every summer
some of the beaches you’ll likely want to steer clear of are:
Though perhaps not quite as popular a beach destination among foreign tourists as the likes of Sicily
the Calabrian coastline still holds its own when summer hits
Some of the most popular beaches to avoid:

Collon can now also boast two double world medallists at karate
following the WUKO Championships in Italy recently
descended on Lido di Jesolo near Venice for the championships for children
Among those competing for Collon were siblings Gordon and Aoife Smith
and Shelby Byrne – all of whom won medals at the inaugural WUKO ( World Union of Karate Do) tournament in Romania two years ago
Also representing the mid Louth club were Gordan and Lauren Dowling (also brother and sister)
Competition was fierce to see who would go farthest and bring home a medal
when all competitors were present for the first events and then the opening ceremony
the full extent of the task ahead of these young athletes became apparent
with 1,644 competitors from 29 countries and 52 federations registered
Some of the categories had more than 35 in each section
In the kata (forms) section of the competition
all of the Irish guys got through to the last-16
Most missed getting through into the final by very narrow margins
but cadet (age 15-17) Megan Byrne proceeded through to the final eight
This was particularly gratifying for Megan
as she had been ready to go to the previous world championships in 2006 when – three weeks before – she dislocated her knee in training and was unable to compete
Megan was placed sixth overall and was very happy with her result as the Hungarians and Austrians were in her section
Also through to the finals in the kata section was Aoife Smith
who already had a third-place medal from Romania in Wado Kata
but Aoife was very happy with silver and vowed that at the 2010 championships in Brazil she would come home with the gold
Speed and agility were the order of the day in the kumite (fighting) divisions
and the Irish competitors knew that if they stood still for a nano second
then the fight would be over before it had even begun
Some of the guys were unfortunate to lose out to the eventual category winner in the first or second round
and whilst it still upset them to go out at an early stage
knowing that they lost to the eventual winner softened the blow a little
Last up to fight for Ireland was Collon's Gordon Smith
And as he was also the current silver medallist in the senior men's heavyweight category
having beaten the world champion to earn this title
aware that this level of success in the junior grade had not been achieved in many
and with coach Bobby in his corner giving him guidance
Gordon easily defeated his first opponent 6-0 in 51 seconds
was particularly lively and Gordon changed his tactics from the first fight and completely blitzed his opponent – 6-1 in just over a minute
The Collon fighter's next two opponents also proved to be no match for the young Irishman who changed tactics again to make him a harder opponent to judge
In the final Gordon was up against Ross Pryce from England
The tactic this time was to let the young Englishman take the first score to lull him into a false sense of security
picking up score after score until the time was up and Gordon had won
The proud young Irishman was particularly elated because as well as his parents Joe (a senior WUKO referee who was actually refereeing another match) and Yvonne Smith being there to support him
his grandparents and girlfriend were also part of the group who travelled to see the competition
When Amhran Na BhFiann was played as Gordon received his medal
there were cheers of pride and joy from every Irish person present
Sensei Joe Smith said of all of his students that he could not be more proud of their achievements
Coach Bobby Morton also had words of encouragement
particularly for those who did not come home with a medal
