You can enjoy bumper homegrown harvests in small spaces
It means that you can grow tomatoes in whatever space you have
this guide looks specifically at the best tomatoes for growing in pots
Whether you want snack-sized cherry tomatoes or larger fruits to turn into sauces or ketchup
there are varieties to accommodate any desire that can grow successfully in containers
there are highly productive patio-sized plants for a deck or balcony
I used to grow tomatoes in pots as a professional kitchen gardener
and have also grown them in containers at home for many years
and I also share advice from two experts who reveal their picks of the best tomatoes for growing in pots and containers
Sungold is a favorite tomato variety of mine and one that I have grown a lot over the years
the harvests sold out quickly from our garden stall
Sungold is a prolific, easy-to-grow cherry tomato that produces trusses laden with bite-sized, extra-sweet orange fruits. It can take less than 60 days from transplanting seedlings to getting the first harvest
and the thin-skinned golden fruits are ideal for snacking or to go in salads
Super Sweet 100 is a popular variety of cherry tomato and a regular on the display tables of garden centers and nurseries to take home and plant
The indeterminate plants are renowned for early harvests and a long cropping season
Super Sweet 100 plants are also known as heavy croppers
deep red tomatoes to harvest throughout the season
Super Sweet 100 is not a compact variety specially bred for containers, but can grow successfully in pots. The plants can reach six feet tall and need training and tomato pruning throughout the season
But the effort is worth it for the large yields of sweet cherry-sized fruits
Little Bing is a cherry tomato variety ideally suited to growing in containers
determinate tomato that produces a large haul of bright red one-inch tomatoes in 60-65 days from planting
Isabel Branstrom
the vegetables development manager for PanAmerican Seed
says of the Little Bing tomato: ‘At less than 24 inches tall
they stay a manageable size and produce lots of tomatoes in a period of a few weeks for a large harvest.’
Little Bing tomato plants don’t require a trellis due to their compact nature
Their manageable size makes them one of the easiest and best cherry tomatoes to grow in pots on a deck or balcony
Isabel BranstromSocial Links NavigationVegetable ExpertIsabel Branstrom is the vegetables development manager for National Garden Bureau member PanAmerican Seed
a global plant breeder and seed producer for the horticultural industry
She is stationed in the company’s breeding and research facility
where the team trials new vegetables and herbs for home gardens across the world.
If you are after a fantastic compact Roma tomato variety for a container
the plants yield bumper crops of tomatoes in summer
which are great for making batches of sauces
The determinate tomato plants are also disease-resistant and crop in 60-65 days
‘Little Napoli is a compact plant with a tidy habit and looks good on the patio
These are great for sauces,’ recommends Isabel Branstrom
Lizzano tomato plants are ideally suited for growing in patio containers or hanging baskets
They are vigorous semi-determinate tomato plants that grow to under 24 inches in height
but trail over the edges of their containers
‘Lizzano tomato has a low-growing trailing habit, so you can grow it in a hanging basket on your patio,’ says Gail Pabst
an experienced horticulturist from the National Garden Bureau
you get lots of bright red cherry tomatoes from each plant
so it will stay healthy and produce tomatoes later in the season.’
The sweet and juicy cherry tomatoes are produced over a long harvest season and are ideal for adding to salads or snacking straight off the plant. As mentioned by Gail, a great reason to grow Lizzano tomatoes is that the plants are bred to be highly resistant to diseases, including tomato blight
Gail PabstSocial Links NavigationPlant ExpertGail is a passionate horticulturist with over 25 years' experience in the industry
She is an avid home gardener too and loves to try out the newest varieties and techniques
Gail is the Marketing Director for the National Garden Bureau and her work has helped her to continue their mission of inspiring
teaching and growing in gardening with others
determinate tomato variety specifically bred for producing big yields when grown in containers or small spaces
The plants may reach just over 18 inches tall
‘One plant can produce over 100 yellow
mild-flavored cherry tomatoes,’ says Gail Pabst
‘It's amazing how many delicious tomatoes you can pick from a single plant.’
Patio Choice Yellow is a fast-maturity variety that can produce fruits within 65 days of sowing the seeds
or 45 days from transplanting your plants in containers
It is also a variety with high levels of disease resistance
Bush Early Girl is a compact version of the popular Early Girl tomato variety prized for early-season fruits
Bush Early Girl is a high-yield determinate variety suited to growing on containers
The plants grow only around 18 inches tall
yet are highly productive and take 60-65 days to harvest
Bush Early Girl still produces medium-sized tomatoes early in the season and offers growers an excellent opportunity for four-inch diameter
You can either plant marigolds in the same container or grow marigolds in their own pots and place them within 18 inches of the tomato plants to get the most beneficial effect
cherry tomato that produces large harvests of scarlet
easy-to-grow cherry tomato for early harvests of small
Little Napoli is a great Roma tomato variety for a container
A perfect plant for lots of tomatoes to use to make sauces and salsa
Lizzano tomato plants are ideal for growing in hanging baskets thanks to their low-growing habits
Patio Choice Yellow tomato plants can produce over 100 yellow cherry tomatoes on compact plants - ideal for pots and smaller spaces
Bush Early Girl is an ideal choice for early
medium-sized fruits on 18-inch compact plants

Chicago magazine newsletters have you covered
Many families around the country have traditions involving restaurants
whether it's returning to the same spot year after year for birthdays
Sunday morning brunches at a favorite local diner
or Friday night pies at a neighborhood pizza place
While plenty of diners like to visit the same restaurants every year, every month, or even every week, others also want to try something new. Consumers today are "looking for new flavor experiences that excite their palates and provide a respite from their daily routines," Stacey Kinkaid
the vice president of product development and innovation at US Foods
"The trend of global flavors demonstrates this as diners look for discovery and escape from the ordinary."
US Foods, a major domestic food service distributor, surveyed 1,000 people who reflect the demographic makeup of the general American population about their dining out and takeout habits in 2024
They found that the average person dines out about 4.6 times per month
Diners are going out to eat for a wide range of reasons
from socialization to enjoying the atmosphere
and from celebrating something special to avoiding the labor of cooking (and cleaning up afterward)
As for what types of restaurants they tend to dine in
at the top of the list is casual dining (69%)
followed by fast food (55%) and fast casual (55%)
Contemporary casual (38%) and bar and grills (30%) round out the top five
Need some inspiration for your next meal out? Stacker compiled a list of recently opened restaurants in Chicago in 2025 using data from Yelp
including details on how each restaurant is rated by diners and the types of cuisine they serve

+ Giovanni was born in Pianaccio di Lizzano, Bologna, Italy, and studied in Porretta Terme, although he did not graduate. After leaving school, he worked as an elevator operator at the Grand Hotel in Bologna.
+ In 1931, he began seminary studies was ordained a priest for the archdiocese of Bologna in 1942, during the ravages of World War II.
+ Father Giovanni’s first assignment was as assistant priest in Sperticano. His pastoral ministry was shaped by the realities of the war and he soon gained a reputation as being a man of action. He offered aid to those who had been displaced, helped other escape persecution by the Nazis, and offered shelter in his rectory to peoples whose homes had been destroyed by bombings. He was often seen traveling on his bicycle to nearby towns to assist those most in need.
+ Giovanni bravely exercised his priestly ministry despite the Nazi occupation and harassment by Fascist authorities. He offered Christian burial to their victims and even offered himself in place of those whom had been imprisoned. On October 12, 1944, he protected a young woman (other sources say two young women) from sexual assault by SS soldiers.
+ He was murdered by Nazi soldiers the following day (October 13) in Marzabatto, although the details of his death are unknown. His body was recovered in the spring of 1945 after the Nazi withdrawal from Italy. He was given Christian burial on October 13, 1945, in his own parish in Sperticano. In 1950, he was posthumously awarded Italy’s Gold Medal of Military Valour in honor of his efforts to protect his people.
+ Blessed Giovanni Fornasini was beatified in 2021.
“A parish priest zealous in charity, he did not abandon his flock during the tragic period of the Second World War, but rather he defended it to the point of bloodshed. May his heroic witness help us to face life’s trials with fortitude.”—Pope Francis
Almighty and merciful God, who brought your Martyr blessed Giovanni to overcome the torments of his passion, grant that we, who celebrate the day of his triumph, may remain invincible under your protection against the snares of the enemy. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever

DURHAM – A University of New Hampshire scientist has developed a new cherry tomato designed to be grown in hanging baskets in greenhouses
Rambling Rose provides a new attractive pink fruit color not yet available in cherry tomatoes suitable for hanging basket production
The new fruit was developed by Becky Sideman
a researcher with the NH Agricultural Experiment Station and extension professor of sustainable horticulture production
and her collaborators Elisabeth Hodgdon at the University of Vermont and Jennifer Noseworthy of Gordon College
Both are former UNH graduate students and worked on the development of Rambling Rose while at UNH
Rambling Rose originated from self-pollinating a single hybrid Tumbler cherry tomato plant at UNH in 2009
Tumbler was selected as the parent material due to its desirable uniform growth and fruiting habit
Plant selections were made in subsequent generations using pedigree selection
choosing the best plants from the best families grown in both greenhouse and field settings until uniformity in plant and fruit phenotype was achieved in the seventh generation of plants
“Our goal was to select plants with attractive and symmetrical branching
Because hanging basket tomatoes are grown not only for their yield
Rambling Rose was developed with aesthetics of vegetative growth in mind as well,” Sideman said
and growth habit of Rambling Rose were comparable to or better than the commercially available cultivars evaluated in 2012 and 2013 in trials at UNH
Those interested in seed trials or commercial seed production should contact Maria Emanuel
The research findings are reported in the June 2015 issue of HortScience in the article “‘Rambling Rose’: A Pink-fruited Cherry Tomato for Hanging Basket Production.” This material is based upon work that is supported by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture
the NH Agricultural Experiment Station at the UNH College of Life Sciences and Agriculture is UNH’s original research center and an elemental component of New Hampshire's land-grant university heritage and mission
