The contest to decide the starting line-up for the 2024 FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship Challenge got under way this afternoon with a pair of Qualifying rounds staged at Abensberg in Germany and Debrecen in Hungary
At stake was a place at Pardubice in the Czech Republic on 4 October for the Challenge event that will determine the four riders who will be given an automatic starting place in the 2025 FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship (SGP)
With four from each Qualifying round going through to Pardubice – where they will be joined by riders who progress via the second set of Qualifying rounds staged this coming Saturday (25 May) in Lonigo in Italy and Žarnovica in Slovakia – competition was intense at both events
The action kicked off at Abensberg in Germany in the Wack Hofmeister Speedway Stadium where Denmark’s Rasmus Jensen started his afternoon with victory in the opening Heat race and following the first block of racing he was joined on three points by experienced Australian Max Fricke
home hero Kai Huckenbeck and Italy’s Felipe Nicolas Covatti
Covatti’s hopes of winning a place behind the tapes at Pardubice ended with retirements in his second and fourth Heats as Poland’s Dominik Kubera took his place in the all-important top four with a victory in his second Heat
a three-time national champion who is currently lying eleventh in this year’s SGP series
was in fantastic form and the thirty-one-year-old added three more victories to his scorecard
His sole defeat came in his fifth and final Heat when he finished second to Kubera
but this was easily good enough to secure the top step of the podium and send him to the Czech Republic in October
The remaining three transfer positions were fiercely contested
Having dropped two points each in their first four Heats
Kubera and Fricke – who won an SGP round in 2020 and again in 2022 and was a member of Australia’s victorious team at the 2022 FIM Speedway of Nations – needed to sign off with strong performances and all three rose to the occasion
booking their places in Pardubice with wins in the fifth block
Tying one point behind Huckenbeck on thirteen
the trio then contested a Run-Off to decide the podium places with Jensen emerging on top from Kubera and Fricke
the Perényi Pál Salakmotor Stadion in Debrecen was the scene of a titanic battle – although the winner in Hungary was
clear-cut with Poland’s Przemyslaw Pawlicki producing an identical scorecard to Huckenbeck
After sweeping to victory in his first four Heats
the thirty-two-year-old – who made his SGP debut all the way back in 2010 – was second in his final race of the afternoon
but his accumulated points were sufficient to place him on the top step of the podium and send him to Pardubice
Getting his afternoon under way with a pair of second-placed finishes
thirty-nine-year-old Brazilian-born Swede Antonio Lindbäck – who has scored twelve podiums including three victories in an SGP career stretching back to 2004 – then put together a run of three successive wins to claim second overall
but behind him it was too close to call with three riders locked together on twelve points following the fifth Heat
With the final two Qualifying positions on the line
Kacper Woryna from Poland and dynamic Dane Frederik Jakobsen took their places behind the tapes for the deciding Run-Off
made no mistake to take the chequered flag in front for third overall with Woryna edging out Jakobsen for the final place in the Czech Republic in early autumn
Focus now switches to Lonigo and Žarnovica in five days’ time where the line-up for the FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship Challenge will be finalised
You can watch the action live from Lonigo and Žarnovica on www.FIM-MOTO.TV
Czech racer Jan Kvech took a stride closer to securing FIM Speedway Grand Prix qualification for 2025 after topping the podium at Italian track Lonigo to book his place at the FIM SGP Challenge in Pardubice on October 4
Kvech is one of SEVEN Speedway GP riders who will defend their place in the series on the opening night of the Czech track’s famous Golden Helmet weekend
where the top four riders are guaranteed places in the 2025 Speedway GP series
German racer Kai Huckenbeck and Poland’s Dominik Kubera in the FIM SGP Challenge
Swedish racer Antonio Lindback and Poland’s Przemyslaw Pawlicki are all battling for returns to the series
while former Danish champion Rasmus Jensen
former Aussie champion Brady Kurtz and Italian star Paco Castagna are all bidding to qualify for the first time
who represents his country in the Orlen FIM Speedway GP of Czech Republic – Prague next Saturday
crashed out of the Trans MF FIM Speedway GP of Germany – Landshut last Saturday and underwent a week of intense physio on a hand injury
It paid off big time as he won the SGP qualifier at Lonigo on 14 points – dropping just one to Speedway GP rival Dan Bewley in his third ride
Kvech will now be the sole Czech rider in the FIM SGP Challenge
which takes place just six days after the 2024 SGP finale in Torun on September 28
GB star Bewley will also take part in the FIM SGP Challenge after finishing second in Lonigo on 13 points
Speedway GP World Championship contender Jack Holder is currently second in this year’s series – firmly inside the top-six automatic qualification places for 2025
But he finished third in Italy to secure himself the insurance policy of an FIM SGP Challenge spot
He defeated home hero Paco Castagna in a run-off for third place after they tied on 12 points
Former World Under-21 champion Jaimon Lidsey just missed out on 11
with Germany’s Kevin Wolbert exiting on 10 and current SGP star Szymon Wozniak – third at the 2023 FIM SGP Challenge – falling short of this year’s event after scoring nine
In the day’s earlier qualifier at Slovak circuit Zarnovica
former Danish champion Anders Thomsen stepped up his Speedway GP return bid as he topped the podium on 14 points
He was followed into the FIM SGP Challenge by former world No.2 Patryk Dudek
Aussie international Brady Kurtz defeated GB racer Robert Lambert in a run-off for third place after they tied on 12
Lambert was in danger of missing out on a Pardubice place
with only three qualifiers guaranteed from the Zarnovica round to allow one spot for a home wild card at the FIM SGP Challenge if no Czech rider qualified for the meeting
Lambert breathes a huge sigh of relief as he takes his place in Pardubice
Slovak star Martin Vaculik made a shock exit from the qualifiers on his boyhood track – scoring 10 points – a total matched by American international Luke Becker
Sweden’s 2021 SGP regular Oliver Berntzon fell short on nine along with Czech racer Vaclav Milik
who misses out on the FIM SGP Challenge at his home club Pardubice

especially in the first half of the meeting
Poland won the 2017 Pairs Championship dominating the meeting
The runner-up place went to Russia while France climbed on the last step of the rostrum
The hosting Country Italy finished at the fourth place with Covatti scoring 12 points out of 15 of the total of the team

MILAN — Chiara Bà felt she led a healthy life
a town nestled in the hills of northeastern Italy
she ate locally grown vegetables and drank pure water — or so she thought.
Although it's very difficult to prove direct causality
the thyroid cancer diagnosis coincided with the discovery that a chemical plant operated by the a company named Miteni had been discharging a group of hormone-altering substances known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS)
polluting drinking water in parts of the Veneto region
“It felt like my entire life had been shattered,” Bà said.
now stands accused of causing Europe’s biggest PFAS-related environmental disaster
Over 350,000 residents in Veneto are estimated to have been exposed to contamination through tap water
Miteni is now facing a court case; two preliminary hearings were held on October 12 and November 30
Bà is among over 200 plaintiffs in the trial and one of the residents of 21 hard-hit municipalities labeled a “red zone.”
Radiation therapy dealt Bà and her family a hard blow. “When you’re sick, it’s not only about you. Everyone becomes sick with you,” she said. The 28-year-old schoolteacher is now hoping to start a family, but the chances are slim. Studies point to a correlation between PFAS and pregnancy complications
hypertension and cancer 10 percent to 25 percent above the national average.
Thirteen managers from Miteni and its main shareholders — Luxembourg’s International Chemical Investors Group (ICIG) and Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation — now face criminal charges for pollution and environmental disaster.
A police investigation seen by POLITICO found Miteni had been aware since 1990 of the pollution
ICIG and Mitsubishi did not issue statements on the matter and did not respond to requests for comment.
a lawyer with the prosecution in the trial
expects the defendants to plead not guilty at the next hearing
will kickstart a trial that Ceruti said will be “extremely complex” and that will last one to two years.
the managers risk jail time and could pay tens of millions of euros in penalties
Veneto’s regional authority and water-service providers are demanding that the polluter pay
Veneto has already spent over €2 million on installing activated carbon filters by water-service providers and the Italian National Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) estimated the total cost of the clean-up at €136.8 million.
Grassroots organizations admitted as plaintiffs at the trial will also seek answers on how an environmental disaster of such proportions could have occurred
a member of the No Pfas Moms committee — a network of mothers leading the charge against Miteni — said she felt angry and betrayed by the company and by the public institutions supposed to keep it in check.
“When pregnant you’re careful about everything
Then you discover that all the while you had been poisoning your child,” she said
And how can we trust it won’t happen again?”
PFAS became ubiquitous before their long-term environmental and health risks were fully understood
PFAS are used in an array of products thanks to their water-repellent properties: pizza cartons
firefighting foam and even pharmaceuticals.
The group of around 4,000 chemicals is known as “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down and can accumulate over time in soil and water
only two derivatives of the PFAS group — PFOA and PFOS — have been regulated in the EU under the Stockholm Convention and the REACH chemicals regulation
but companies have been quick to switch to other
That's why the European Commission proposed last month in its chemicals strategy to phase out all non-essential PFAS
using a group approach that is designed to avoid companies switching to alternatives
began testing hydro-repellent textile materials in 1964
The company was acquired and renamed by Mitsubishi and EniChem — the chemical branch of Italian oil giant ENI — in 1988.
According to an Italian parliamentary inquiry
Mitsubishi held 90 percent of shares between 1997 and 2001
during which time it commissioned environmental assessments and “had knowledge of the pollution of the groundwater on its site.” Miteni was bought by ICIG in 2009 and the inquiry suggests the company continued operating in the same way.
Veneto’s Regional Agency for the Protection of the Environment (ARPAV) lacked adequate tools to monitor wastewater discharges
“Imagine asking the police to arrest a person in a big metropolis without having a name or a description,” said Luca Marchesi
ARPAV must have the equivalent of a suspect’s identikit
referred to as the “standard.” This is only available for those chemicals regulated at the national level
Veneto’s potable water was therefore certified as safe
but only against the available standards.
“What we need is a regulatory system that enables us to conduct tests when the chemicals are introduced
rather than when it’s too late,” Marchesi said.
Italy's National Research Council (CNR) set out to monitor the presence of PFAS in the country in 2013
News of the contamination of Veneto’s drinking-water took center stage
but the study revealed the breadth of the crisis in water bodies across Italy
“PFAS are everywhere,“ said Stefano Polesello
“The problem with these substances is that they do not biodegrade but accumulate in the organism” and in the food chain.
Miteni stopped producing long-chain perfluoroalkylated compounds (PFOA and PFOS) in 2011 but continued making short-chain perfluorocrystalline compounds — ostensibly safer PFAS but ones that research found were also persistent and better able to accumulate in plants
which may lead to increases in human dietary exposure
Several EU countries have set drinking water limits for some groups of PFAS and Italy is discussing a draft law expected to be approved by the end of the year that goes in this direction
Polesello called this a “fig leaf” and said all such chemicals should be replaced with biodegradable substances.
“It’s easier to stop something from happening then to repair the damage afterwards,” Polesello said
A crackdown in Italy is sending garbage elsewhere in Europe
The final eight riders progressing to the 2024 FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship Challenge were decided today following the last pair of Qualifying rounds – staged in Žarnovica in Slovakia and Lonigo in Italy – to determine the starting line-up at Pardubice in the Czech Republic on 4 October
At stake in the autumn will be four invaluable full-time positions behind the tapes for the 2025 FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship (SGP) and with such a glittering prize awaiting them in Pardubice it was no surprise that competitors at both Qualifying rounds came out fighting
Despite carrying a shoulder injury the star of the show in Žarnovica was Denmark’s Anders Thomsen
who was fifteenth in last year’s SGP series after missing the final three rounds following hand surgery
dropped just one point during the course of the afternoon to book his place in Pardubice
Sharing the lead after the opening block of four Heats with Robert Lambert from Great Britain
home favourite Martin Vaculik and Luke Becker from the USA
Thomsen moved to the front on his own when he won his second Heat and he maintained this advantage after victory in his third Heat took his total to nine points
With the top four booking their places in Pardubice as long as a Czech rider qualified for the Challenge event
Poland’s Patryk Dudek moved into contention tied with Lambert on eight points following the third block of Heats with swift Swede Oliver Berntzon next in line on seven
Becker revived his hopes of making the cut when he inflicted Thomsen’s only defeat of the afternoon in his fourth Heat which moved him up to eight points
three behind Thomsen who was now tied at the top with Dudek ahead of a three-way tie on nine points between Australia’s Brady Kurtz
Thomsen then made sure of the top step of the podium with his fourth win of the afternoon in his final Heat
but behind him the tension was reaching boiling point
A retirement in his third Heat had put Vaculik – currently sitting seventh in SGP – on the back foot and despite signing off with two wins he ended the day tied with Becker for fifth while a second-placed finish behind Kurtz ensured Dudek went through
leaving the Australian joint third with Lambert who also won his final Heat
In the Run-Off for the third step of the podium – and the final guaranteed place in the Challenge event – it was Kurtz who came out on top
leaving Lambert with an anxious wait to see if Jan Kvěch
the only remaining Czech rider in the competition
would make the cut from the evening programme at Lonigo
Kvěch was in fine form just a few hours later and the twenty-two-year-old only dropped one point to top the Italian podium and comfortably progress to the Challenge event
With two wins and two second places from his opening four Heats in Italy
Dan Bewley went into his final Heat knowing that second would secure him a place in the top four
but the twenty-five-year-old British racer – currently sixth in the SGP standings – was not about to settle for position and he raced to his third win of the programme to end the evening a clear second
Holding down second in the 2024 SGP title fight
Australia’s Jack Holder was one of the pre-race favourites
but after dropping points in his first two Heats he needed back-to-back wins in his third and fourth Heats to drag himself back into contention before he made sure of his place in Pardubice with second in his fifth Heat
Local hero Michele Paco Castagna had started the evening with three wins before a single point in his fourth Heat dropped him into the danger zone
but he fired back with second in his final Heat race to tie with Holder before losing third in the Run-Off to the Australian
The first four from both Slovakia and Italy will now join the eight successful riders from Monday’s two Qualifying rounds in Germany and Hungary for a date with destiny in the Czech Republic on 4 October

happening now! partnering with antonio citterio, AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function, but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style, context, and personal expression.
the Santa Marina Stadium in Lonigo has become the center of the Italian speedway
producing champions for a deadly sport that rarely makes it past a local audience
Their crowds are often small and the riders’ jerseys are emblazoned with small-business logos
This is the world documented by photographer Alessandro Simonetti during his time photographing the speedway racers of Northern Italy
Following our obsession with speed and the freedom-body that led to our Motocross Collection
What type of racing are you showing in these images
The work portrays a really singular practice of motorbikes
It’s at the bottom of the motorbike pyramid – the least accessible and definitely the kind that has lost the most hype from sponsorships and crowds
The races take place on anti-clockwise dirt oval tracks and the riders slide their bikes sideways
The origin of this practice is lost in the dust
but the first appearance of speedbikes happened even before the First World War in the US and eventually gained traction in Australia in the 1910s and 20s
The FIM [Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme] regulations state that the motorcycles must have no brakes
What is the connection between Italy and speedway
Speedway arrived in Italy after the Second World War and found a perfect playground on the abandoned horse-racing tracks of Udine and Trieste in the northeast of Italy
UK soldiers were using street bikes adjusted to fit the track and they were actually responsible for building the hype for a practice that was never before seen in Italy
The Lonigo horse tracks were eventually blessed by the Italian “King of Speed” Dario Basso
who tested the track with his Gilera and declared it practicable for official competitions – this was before several riders got injured and died
Lonigo decided on a proper stadium to be able to host the increasing number of riders
eventually giving birth to local champs like Paolo Noro
I had various scooters during my youth: a Booster
but because of the skateboard and snowboard scene
I had the chance to follow the early career of one of the most influential FMX riders in Italy
I met him at the Academy of Fine Arts in the late 90s while we were both students and witnessed his shift from dirt jumps and basic tricks to metal ramps and backflips
That was the peak of my relationship with motorbikes – it’s just an aesthetic-platonic crash
I grew up with two women and there was no MotoGP or Formula One running on our TV
so it was a random encounter which revealed my infatuation toward this subject
I always think of Italy being famous for fancy red sports cars
How is Motocross considered culturally by Italians
Italy has a long tradition and passion for cars and motorbikes
especially in the northeast where I come from
You easily see five-year-old kids rocking the tracks
Could you expand on some of the behind-the-scenes stories from when you took these pictures
I spent some time with a few riders while they were preparing the bikes
speedway is the most dangerous of all the bike sports
but what the rider said revealed a strong passion and sense of pride for this sport that suffers from a total lack of attention
The sponsors that were embroidered on their leather suits were all local companies
I think what captured me at first was the style of the speedway posters that I saw when I was little: duotone
black and yellow guerrilla wheat paste on suburban walls
What keeps you coming back to these bikes and their riders
the absolute absence of high-end technology
the moves and attitude on the track – they perfectly fit my aesthetic in photography
I shot the whole competition on film with an old Nikon set
pushing the ISO beyond and not caring about having a rough result in terms of contrasts and grain
Do you think there is a political aspect tied to motorbike sports
think about the Futurism movement of the early twentieth century that emphasized speed
as well as objects like cars and motorbikes
Conceiving of speed as a tool to move faster
in order to leave behind the weight of the Italian past
I also see a thin religious vein in the sport
I’m not referring to the faith you might need to push yourself to that level of racing – it’s more a simmering anti-religious attitude of putting your life at risk against the will of god

The fight for a coveted place behind the tapes at the 2025 FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship (SGP) gets under way in just a few days’ time when a series of Qualifying rounds are staged in Abensberg in Germany and Debrecen in Hungary this coming Monday (20 May) and in Lonigo in Italy and Žarnovica in Slovakia the following Saturday (25 May)
A total of seventy-two competitors will line up across the four events with the top four riders from each transferring to the FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship Challenge event at Pardubice in the Czech Republic on 4 October
In the event of no Czech riders progressing via the Qualifying rounds
only the top three finishers from Žarnovica will go through and the final place at the Challenge will be filled by a Czech wild card
The top four riders in Pardubice – increased from three in 2023 – will earn their places among the elite riders in the 2025 SGP series
With only the top six from this year’s SGP series gaining a guaranteed automatic place in the 2025 line-up
the Challenge has once again attracted a high-class entry with a number of current SGP stars who view the event as additional insurance for the following season opting to compete
Winner of the Challenge in 2023 that was held in Gislaved in Sweden
Australia’s Jason Doyle is currently leading the 2024 SGP standings after two rounds with Slovakian Martin Vaculik and Poland’s Szymon Wozniak – who completed the Challenge podium last year – both holding down positions inside the top ten
Among the 2024 SGP riders taking to the shale on Monday is Andzejs Lebedevs who has so far achieved a season-best finish of twelfth which came at the second round of the championship in Warsaw in Poland in the middle of May
The Latvian will contest the qualifying round in Debrecen where riders he will line up against include Frederik Jakobsen from Denmark
Sweden’s Jacob Thorssell and Polish racer Przemyslaw Pawlicki who all made it through to last year’s Challenge event before being eliminated
The Qualifying rounds are always a truly international occasion and this year’s entry for Debrecen alone features competitors from three continents and thirteen different nations
Monday’s action kicks off in the Wack Hofmeister Speedway Stadium
with the first Heat scheduled for 14:00 local time
Racing in the Perényi Pál Salakmotor Stadion in Debrecen is scheduled to start at 16:00 local time
