With great sorrow we hear the news of the death of Pope Francis
He was never afraid to take on the great issues of our time with clarity and courage
He addressed topics such as global hunger and poverty
climate change (Laudato si’ remains a landmark document
and no one like him gave such a powerful and clear voice to what is needed to safeguard the future of our planet)
He made if mostly unheeded calls calls for peace and dialogue among peoples
Pope Francis spoke to both believers and non-believers
and often succeeded in stirring the consciences of all
the world has lost a voice for the good of humanity and for common sense
I hold three particular memories that testify to the depth and uniqueness of his pontificate
The first dates back to the Covid pandemic in 2020
the Pope uttered no words: none were needed
and the families of both victims and the convicted
A moment of profound spiritual intensity that will remain in our collective memory
when a delegation from the University of Macerata was received in a private audience in the Clementine Hall of the Apostolic Palace
on the occasion of the 470th anniversary of the birth of Father Matteo Ricci
Pope Francis called Ricci a "champion of the culture of encounter" and highlighted the fundamental role of the university as a privileged space for dialogue between cultures
“is the challenge of the university: to bring together these two horizons—the global and the personal—so that they may dialogue
Pope Francis always showed constant attention to the value of education
is the best investment a country can make for its future.”Words we will continue to cherish and honor through our daily work
The third memory dates to the spring of 2023
when I took part in a conference held at Villa Malta
titled The Global Aesthetics of the Catholic Imagination
we were received in audience by a Pope Francis full of joy and enthusiasm
who set aside his prepared remarks to speak informally—but with great intensity—about the importance of literature
and creativity in all its forms. He urged poets
verbal expression—to give voice to everything that human beings experience
The University of Macerata joins the Church and the international community in mourning
paying tribute to a figure who embodied the Gospel in our time and who will continue to inspire future generations

The excavation at Villamagna revealed a Roman villa with striking monumental structures and the brewery
an unusual find in Italy’s winemaking heartland
Experts believe this brewery may be linked to the ancient Gallic roots of the area
who occupied much of the region in the 4th century BCE
provide new insights into land management in Roman times and enrich the offerings of the Abbadia di Fiastra Nature Reserve,” said a spokesperson from the University of Macerata
is believed to date to the 5th-6th century CE
possibly linked to the area’s occupation by Gothic populations
This timeline indicates a blend of cultural influences and traditions in the region over centuries
These include kilns for pottery production and metal forges from the Republican era

The most evenly matched series of the first round of Serie A was undoubtedly between Hotsand Macerata and Nettuno 1945
even though Macerata ultimately swept both games
The first game ended 4-3 in the second extra inning
Macerata appeared to have complete control
except in the final inning when Nettuno had runners on second and third with a chance to tie
On a day when hitting proved challenging for almost everyone on the field
Jesús Carrera stood out as a rare exception
He went 1-for-3 with two walks in Game 1 and a perfect 3-for-3 in Game 2
posting an incredible combined batting average of .667 — a mark no other player on either team came close to matching
“They were two very competitive games for both teams,” confirmed Macerata’s first baseman
“Everyone wants to start the season strong
so there was plenty of tension on the field on both sides
The first game was extremely tough and went into extra innings
We hope to carry this momentum into next weekend in Bologna
We definitely need to find more rhythm at the plate and continue building our team chemistry
even though we’re already a tight group — as shown by the fact that we didn’t commit a single defensive error.”
The goal for Macerata this season is clear for Carrera
makes no effort to hide it: “There’s a real hunger for redemption
and we all want to improve on last year's results.”
believe this season will be more competitive than previous years
“I think it will be more challenging for everyone
We expect every team to be more competitive
so we need to have the right mentality going into every game
We already saw with Nettuno how quickly a match can turn around in just one inning
That’s why I believe this year’s tournament will be much more balanced

Archaeologists have discovered the only brewery from the Roman era found to date on the peninsula
which also includes kilns for pottery production and metal forges
was revealed during the 30th excavation campaign conducted by the Università di Macerata at the sites of Urbs Salvia and Villamagna
archaeologists found a Roman villa with impressive monumental structures and the mentioned brewery
This unusual discovery could be linked to the ancient Gallic roots of the region
a Celtic tribe originally from present-day France
occupied various areas of the Marche region
and it is likely that the owners of the villa maintained this ancestral tradition influenced by Celtic culture
also in the municipal territory of Urbisaglia
the excavation has revealed extraordinary finds in the Forum of the Roman colony and in the area of the cryptoporticus
The University has reported the discovery of kilns for pottery production and metal forges from the Republican era
shedding new light on the process of Romanization of the Piceno
The Regional Directorate of Museums of the Marche plans to expand the area accessible to the public
enriching the visitors’ experience with these new discoveries
Founded in the 3rd century BC as a Roman colony to consolidate control over the Adriatic regions

George Simion will face Nicusor Dan, a mainstream candidate, in a run-off
There are five luxuries it can no longer feasibly afford
Friedrich Merz’s career is one of unforced errors and puzzling missteps. But he is serious about Europe
Both Donald Trump and Ukraine’s diplomats will consider it a success
The central Bara Fall and libero Simone Gabbanelli will certainly remain, while the young Tommaso Ichino will go to Milan where he will be part of the SuperLega team. After five seasons, the paths of the central Gabriele Sanfilippo and Macerata could separate, Taranto is interested in the player.
At their seasonal debut, the ATM tennis players conquered the hard courts of the Manfredonia club with a clear 4-0, a particularly treacherous surface but which did not create problems for the Macerata athletes. The new acquisition Julius Terziyska e Aurora Maria Compagnucci, now a guarantee for the team, beat their respective opponents in two comfortable sets.
An authentic competitive masterpiece that of Aurora Curzi who, down a set (0-6), overturned a situation that seemed compromised, winning the next two sets at the tie-break (7-6, 7-6) and also canceling two match points to an opponent who until that moment had been undefeated in team competitions. The perfect day was completed by the doubles formed by Curzi herself and Juli Terziyska, victorious without particular difficulties.
In the second round, at the home debut, another important victory came with a 3-1 win against the Capanno Academy 2000 team from Latina. Once again the protagonists were Juli Terziyska and Aurora Curzi who, after winning their respective singles matches, also won the decisive doubles. The only sore point was the defeat of Aurora Maria Compagnucci who, on her birthday, gave way to a young but very valid opponent.
Thanks to these results, the team from Macerata is temporarily alone at the top of the standings in its group. The team, which can also count on Gloria De Santis and the new arrival Anna Lanciaprima, certainly has no shortage of alternatives.
Now some days of rest have been granted and then the classic break will take place.
"The Campanians – says Italo Vullo, general manager of the Macerata-based club – have played a good championship. In the last part we have been growing while they have dropped a bit, let's see now what conditions they are in". The teams played their last match on April 13 and objectively such a long period without matches can have a price. "This break – admits Vullo – has certainly not helped, but I have seen our players relaxed, calm and in good condition".
Bara Fall, central player of Banca Macerata Fisiomed, intervenes on this aspect. "It is not an easy period for us, we have been stopped without playing for a while and it is difficult to maintain the rhythm of the match. The mood is good as always, we know that it could also be the last challenge of the season so we will go there and try to do our best".
Bollate has already made its mark in the first three days, winning the six games against Rovigo, Castellana and Collecchio. Macerata last Saturday instead conquered the first point in the standings, drawing at home with the Thunders (0-1 and 12-6). In Game 1 the Venetians won with the minimum margin a match on equal terms. Game 2 saw Ares Macerata unlock and obtain the success with a large score and good play.

The black and whites are coming off an unconvincing draw in Castelfranco Veneto, while the team from the Marche were busy on the pitch of league leaders Bollate last match, where they fell 9-0 in the first match while the second was interrupted with the home team leading 1-0 due to a fault in the lighting system, with the match therefore to be completed as soon as possible.
In the standings, Italposa occupies third place, with 5 wins and 3 defeats, while the team from Marche is seventh, with only one win in 5 matches, and with three games to make up: the end of game 2 in Bollate and the first day against Caronno, with the matches postponed due to bad weather.
Back in the top division for two seasons, the Macerata team has played in mid-high ranking championships, positioning itself just behind the playoff zone. In direct clashes in recent years, Italposa has a clear advantage: it has won 7 times out of 8 matches.
Compared to last season Macerata has added a couple of elements: the return of Chiara Mengoli, ex Parma, and from Saronno the hiring of Flavia Carletti. For the foreign department, the American one arrived instead Elizabeth Avery, pitcher, and the other foreigner, the Japanese Wakako Chikamoto, could also be in Sunday's game. In addition to the additions to the lineup, there are also changes in the technical staff: the new head coach is the Cuban Rafael Garcia.
On the statistical level, the Forlì attack, even if dull in the last outing, has a batting average of .312 against the .219 of Macerata. However, the aforementioned Carletti must be kept under control, who travels with a batting average of .556, followed by the American Avery with .444.
In the Italposa ranks, four athletes are batting over .400, with Moreland ahead of everyone with a .450 average, 6 RBI and 3 HR, followed by Carlotta Onofri (.444) and the young Turci who, with an excellent .417, is also among the leaders of the championship.
Race 1 will see Italposa face Luconi on Mount Cacciamani, while race 2 will see the American challenge: Johnson versus Avery.
The other matches were played on Friday: Bollate-Old Parma 9-0 (in the 5th) and 16-0 (in the 3rd); Saronno-Thunders Castelfranco 8-6 and 7-0 (in the 5th); Collecchio-Caronno 6-5 and 2-11; Rovigo-Pianoro was postponed, due to a very serious bereavement that has affected the Bologna team: the player and coach of the under 13 team Alice Morelli passed away at just 23 years old.
For the libero Giulia Bresciani it is the fifth promotion. "I was lucky - says the player - to play in well-organized and ambitious teams. This year the leap to A1 was built over time, there was constant growth as a team and in the end the promotion came".
The first year in A2 will be unforgettable for spiker Camilla Sanguigni. "It was an immense joy, I experienced a very strong emotion - says the player - and the next day I still have to realize how much we have done. For me it was an honor to be part of such a strong and united team, capable of overcoming difficulties and reaching the greatest goal".
In the final, setter Asia Bonelli was awarded as MVP of the match. "I'm very happy, it's a victory that we deserved after all the hard work in the gym. We are a united group, the team deserved this victory. The MVP title? I didn't expect it and I'm very happy".

who is double majoring in Italian and Jurisprudence
had the unique chance to work on the surtitling of three operas (Madama Butterfly
Aida) within a translation and accessibility project led by a team of experts in the field under the supervision of Dr
Associate Professor of English Translation at the University of Macerata and head of the accessibility project at the Sferisterio
This project aims at creating titles and audio descriptions to broaden access to the operas for both an international audience and diverse able spectators whose sight and audio skills do not constitute an obstacle in the full appreciation of the operas thanks to the work of this team of specialists
“I’ve always had a passion for the Italian language and music,” Rosanna shared upon returning to the States
I’ve grown a deeper love and appreciation for both music and the Italian language
This internship introduced me to a whole new world: opera and translation
Many operas are in Italian and so if I hadn’t studied Italian
working on translating them would have been very difficult
Thanks to my major in Italian at Montclair State
this opportunity to translate operas became available to me
This internship has opened my eyes and has stimulated me to explore more opportunities in the field of subtitling/surtitling and translating at large.”
The experience of living and working abroad left a deep impression on Rosanna overall
she emphasized the artistic richness of the town
whose region – the Marche – once belonged to the Papal State; the gorgeous landscape surrounding this town
and especially its closeness to beautiful beaches along the Adriatic Sea; the fresh and affordable food (including gelato
and local produce); and its location nearby Civitanova Marche which is on the high-speed line to Venice
it is the people and the values that have left the deepest mark on Rosanna: “Macerata is known as the City of Peace and these words cannot be more accurate
The people are peaceful and full of life and love
It’s a city where you find beauty in the ordinary things
All the people I had the privilege to work with have taught me new things: with them I have also created friendships and connections that I know will last in the years to come
I hope I can return to Macerata one day to experience again not just the Opera Festival but also the life in the beautiful city that hosts it.”
These opportunities are made possible by generous donors such as Mr
Inserra who as a Montclair State University Board of Trustee member understands the current needs of the university system in contact with the professional world
We believe that his continued investment on Italian Studies at Montclair State via the Inserra Endowed Chair will create the conditions for growing the numbers of Italian students while providing priceless life experiences for young motivated minds.”
The accessibility project at the Sferisterio
has reached national recognition overseas: it was covered by the Italian media in articles and videos that also mentioned Montclair State University
Such visibility helps consolidate the relationship established through the international partnership with the Translation Program of the University of Macerata

said to show no remorse over two-hour attack in Macerata that injured six
A far-right extremist suspected of carrying out a shooting rampage that wounded six Africans in central Italy was “lucid and determined, aware of what he had done” and exhibited no remorse for his actions, an Italian law enforcement official said.
Luca Traini, 28, remained jailed on Sunday as police investigated him on multiple charges of attempted murder with the aggravating circumstance of racial hatred for the attacks the previous night in the Italian city of Macerata.
The five men and one woman wounded in the two-hour drive-by shooting were from Nigeria, Ghana, the Gambia and Mali, according to RAI state television.
Italian authorities said they had seized a copy of Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf,, other publications linked to Nazism and a flag with a Celtic cross, a symbol commonly used by white supremacists, from Traini’s home.
Traini, who is Italian, was an unsuccessful candidate last year in a local election for the anti-migrant Northern League. Italy’s Ansa news agency quoted acquaintances saying he had previously had ties with the neofascist Forza Nuova and CasaPound parties.
Photographs released by police showed Traini with a neo-Nazi tattoo on his forehead and an Italian flag tied around his neck.
Lt Col Michele Roberti, the Carabinieri commander in Macerata, told Italian news channel Sky TG24 on Sunday that Traini had demonstrated no remorse for the two-hour rampage and “it’s likely that he carried out this crazy gesture as a sort of retaliation, a sort of vendetta” for the death of a teenager a few days earlier.
A Nigerian man has been arrested in connection with the death of Pamela Mastropietro, 18, whose dismembered remains were found in two suitcases days after she walked away from a drug rehab community.
Police said her bloody clothes, a receipt from a pharmacy where she had bought a syringe and knives consistent with the crime had been found in the suspect’s apartment. Roberti ruled out any personal connection between Traini and the dead woman.
One of the people wounded on Saturday, a 29-year-old woman identified only as Jennifer, told La Stampa from her hospital bed that she no longer felt free to walk around the city “with peace of mind”.
‘’I never hurt anyone. I was talking and laughing with three other people” when she was struck by the bullet, she told the Turin-based newspaper.
One of the six victims was treated and released on Saturday. The remaining patients were all in a stable condition, with one in intensive care and Jennifer facing surgery on her shoulder, doctors said on Sunday.
Her boyfriend told La Repubblica they were waiting at a bus station when he saw a man pointing something at them from a black car. He realised then that it was a gun.
“I gave Jennifer a push to get her out of the way and threw myself down. And I heard a shot: Boom!” said Ogie Igbinowania.
Jennifer told the newspaper she arrived in Italy seven months ago and joined her boyfriend in Macerata. “I have always been comfortable here. People are friendly. I don’t know why that guy fired at us,” she said.
A Nigerian community leader in Macerata, Sammy Kunoun, said he had heard the shots as he was going to meet cultural mediators about organising a sit-in to support Mastropietro’s family. They called off the event after the shootings for fear of further racist attacks.

adding that the immigrant community has been well-integrated in Macerata
Official statistics put the population of foreigners in the city at 9.2% of the 43,000 residents
The shootings came during a heated electoral campaign in which anti-foreigner sentiment has become a key theme
