As Storm Herminia arrives over the Mediterranean the Italian Coast Guard has had to respond to two groundings in the span of little more than a day including one in an upscale beach resort near Livorno.  the fishing vessel Calimero Sampa ran aground on a shoal just off Cesenatico on Italy's Adriatic coast The vessel came to rest about 250 yards offshore and partially capsized The Guardia Costiera responded with a patrol boat and an inflatable to reach the shallow-water site of the grounding As the Calimero Sampa listed over onto its starboard side the four members of the crew moved up to the wheelhouse but stayed on board to await evacuation.  shallow water and wave action made the response complex the rescuers had transferred all four survivors into the inflatable boat All were unharmed and were delivered to shore for a medical evaluation.  the hopper dredger Guang Rong ran aground on a beachfront in Marina di Massa due to bad weather The stern came to rest against the iconic Pontile di Marina di Massa a public-access pier in an upscale resort district and a helicopter is monitoring the situation.  Guang Rong is a 10,000 dwt hopper dredger flagged in Cyprus and owned in Italy The 26-year-old vessel has accumulated a long history of deficiencies and detentions with port state inspectors finding multiple issues at every boarding since 2017 Her last inspection - at Marina di Carrara Italy in September 2024 - turned up 24 deficiencies and the vessel was detained for nearly a month for repairs The identified issues included problems with corrosion A drifting Cypriot vessel (Guang Rong) has collided with the pier at Marina di Massa in Tuscany Italy during strong winds, causing it to partially collapse… pic.twitter.com/XF7uniw6AL between social utopias and new ecological imaginaries between memory and the possibility of regeneration the Post-Cologne Festival transforms the former marine colonies of Marina di Massa into a cultural laboratory a crossroads of reflection and experimentation.Through a transdisciplinary program of performances curated by Martina Angelotti and Emanuele Guidi questions the contradictions of our time starting from a symbolic architecture: the FIAT Tower in Marina di Massa Built in 1933 by engineer Vittorio Bonadè Bottino on the initiative of Senator Agnelli the tower was once part of a system of colonies that welcomed the children of the working class for an educational and therapeutic vacation this space is transformed for a week into an observatory and amplifier of history and social transformations the Marina di Massa Tower will be the festival’s main venue overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea on one side and the Apuan Alps on the other which tells as much about the dream of a popular tourism as its decline between abandoned buildings and new forms of spontaneous reuse Post-Cologne is not intended to be just a cultural event but a platform for research and imagination former marine colonies are rethought as alternative cohabitation spaces far from a productivist and consumerist model with new perspectives on inclusion and sustainability a video exhibition traces fragments of history questioning official narratives and opening up questions about the future The tower’s spaces become habitable and interactive environments A rich program of events will enliven the week: thematic meetings on urban regeneration guided tours among the former colonies and the surrounding landscape sound experiences and artistic performances Topics include the relationship between ecology and urbanism the meaning of vacation in contemporary society and the comparison of productive and leisure time The former marine colonies on the Apuan coast which came into being between the early twentieth century and the Fascist two decades were conceived as collective training spaces where young people were supposed to prepare for a future in the factory or the army but also of hope and promises of social equity they embodied the idea of a popular tourism accessible to all As happened on the Riviera Romagnola, the Pisan and Ostiense coasts these architectures marked the landscape for decades but also territories of possibilities and new appropriations as the climate crisis transforms the coastal landscape and threatens the very existence of these architectures the festival aims to reignite the debate on how to restore meaning and function to these places the program will offer an immersive experience of performances People will be able to explore the former colonies with guided tours participate in art installations that reinterpret the concept of emptiness and reuse and listen to stories from former workers who once animated these spaces There will be no shortage of moments dedicated to younger people with creative workshops for children and open visits to high schools Another central element will be the relationship with the landscape: the beaches and surroundings of the Tower will become settings for artistic and sound interventions with music at sunset and forays into the territory Post-Cologne Festival invites the public not only to observe, but to experience the place in an active and participatory way. The possibility of staying on the coast, in a “Post-Cologne,” will make the experience even more immersive, allowing you to get in touch with the atmosphere and memories of the area. All events will be free by reservation, with the full program soon available online at post-colony.it. Italian-owned vessel collides with pier, no spillage reported Storm Herminia, raging over western Europe, threw a cargo ship off course in Italy late on Tuesday and sent it crashing into a pier in a picturesque Tuscan sea resort. Thirteen seafarers safely evacuated the 10,000-dwt Guang Rong (built 2001), which grounded at Marina di Massa on the Ligurian coast. Italian coastguards, who sent a helicopter to monitor the operation, reported no casualties or spillage from the incident and attributed it to “bad weather”. According to local media, the Guang Rong went adrift at about 21:00 local time on 28 January. The ship was half-loaded with marble debris when winds pushed it slowly against a narrow wooden pier stretching out into the sea. According to the website Il Tirreno, the situation was complicated by an onboard crane that may have destabilised the vessel. “Unfortunately, part of the pier has already collapsed,” Il Tirreno cited the city’s mayor, Francesco Persiani, as saying. Marina di Massa is touted as a fashionable holiday resort on the Ligurian coast, with the Apuan Alps massif forming its backdrop. Despite its Chinese name, the Guang Rong is listed under Italian ownership and flies the Cypriot flag. Il Tirreno says the ship is employed in shuttle trades carrying waste from Carrara — a famous quarry region producing high-quality marble since Roman times. According to the website, the ship had only one engine functioning and may also have had a problem with one of its anchors. According to Paris MoU data listed on Equasis, Italian authorities detained the Guang Rong three times between September 2022 and September 2024, for a total of 69 days, over 49 different deficiencies. This sentiment is echoed by many who feel that while the law might technically be on their side the reality on the ground is much different shares her perspective: "EU law clearly states that all concessions have expired until new The overwhelming majority of private beaches ( it is estimated 99% of them) haven't undergone proper bids so anyone should be able to bring their own stuff." This assertion reflects the complex legal environment currently surrounding Italian beach concessions The Bolkestein Directive mandates that such concessions must be opened up to competitive bidding to ensure fair access and prevent monopolies Italy has struggled to comply with this directive The concessions were supposed to expire at the end of 2023 new licenses were expected to be issued through transparent public tenders many beach operators continue business as usual essentially ignoring the expired status of their concessions." a lawyer specializing in Italian property law adds: "The enforcement of EU law in Italy is often met with resistance particularly in cases where local traditions and vested interests are at stake The situation with beach concessions is a prime example of this conflict." Even tourists have weighed in on the issue recounts her experience: "I was told by locals that I could just set up my umbrella anywhere the beach staff were aggressive and insistent that I pay Obviously there is pushback from local governments the EU directive is basically a law now that it has been ratified in Italy but that doesnt mean the city councils agree with it Law enforcment is under pressure because they are obliged to uphold the EU law whilst locals may want to impose their local or regional laws on tourists.     One of those rules which is often quoted is the "5-meter rule" or "10-meter rule" regarding shorelines in Italy whcih refers to a legal principle that guarantees public access to a strip of land along the coast which mandates that a certain distance from the shoreline must remain free and accessible to the public even if the adjacent beach area is managed by private concessions 5-Meter Rule: This rule generally states that the first 5 meters from the water's edge are considered public property This space must remain free for public use allowing people to walk along the shore regardless of whether the beach is privately managed or not This rule is part of the Italian Coastal Law which aims to ensure that all beaches remain accessible to the public 10-Meter Rule: In some regions or under certain circumstances the public access area may be extended to 10 meters from the waterline The exact application of this rule can vary depending on local regulations or specific environmental protections While the law clearly mandates these public access zones Many private beach operators attempt to encroach on these public areas placing sunbeds and umbrellas right up to the water's edge This has been a source of ongoing disputes particularly in light of the Bolkestein Directive which challenges the automatic renewal of beach concessions 10-meter) rule is an important aspect of Italian coastal law that guarantees public access to the shoreline its enforcement has been challenged by the practices of private beach operators leading to conflicts and a need for clearer legal and regulatory action For those planning a trip to Italy's beautiful coastlines this means that while you may have the right to access these beaches freely exercising that right could lead to confrontation Beachgoers might find themselves in disputes with beach operators who are reluctant to relinquish their control without a fight For further reading on this issue and cases where beachgoers have tested the new legal situation If you decide to be an activist and confront the status quo regarding beach access in Italy here are some key pieces of advice to help you navigate the situation effectively and safely: Note: The names used in this article are fictional to protect the privacy of those who shared their experiences Join the discussion on Reddit Dolcevia® is a registered trademark - 2024-2025 Copyright Dolcevia.com Don't miss our new features for slow travelers - Experience a different Italy Not yet subscribed to VIP Zone? goal often led him to get close to the subjects who caught his eye perhaps even closer than some of us (whether as photographers or subjects) are comfortable with or come from the colonies of workers and low-cost holidays organized I noticed a great deal of distrust on their part and the problems were not few,” he recalled in the set’s description “People portrayed are workers who choose this more of his work We are talking about the Province of Massa-Carrara divided between the Apuan Alps and Lunigiana and chosen by the New York Times as the only Italian destination for a trip in 2024 its landscapes and its millennia-old culture a warlike people who stood up to the Romans and whose mysterious stele statues remain for us to admire in the area’s museums the Province of Massa-Carrara is a little-known jewel for mass tourism The southern part of the province is dominated by the spectacular Apuan Alps Nature lovers can explore the Apuan Alps Park where hiking trails lead to spectacular views And then there are the cities: Massa and Carrara preserve their historic centers well intact but they are also seaside towns that come alive in the summer while Lunigiana is dotted with picturesque medieval villages that offer the chance to take real time travels among cobblestone streets and a still authentic and genuine atmosphere And what about the gastronomic specialties Delicacies impossible to find anywhere else in Italy can be found here: testaroli from Lunigiana (seasoned with pesto and many other specialties that satisfy everyone’s palate Massa-Carrara is therefore a destination that reserves the opportunity to explore natural beauty and savor unique cuisine on a journey that will provide memories that are hard to forget let’s see what are the ten stops you should not miss during your stay!1 the ancient capital of a small state (first a marquisate then a principality and finally a duchy) that roughly corresponded to the territory of the present province and remained independent from the 15th century until the Restoration preserves in its historic center its orderly Renaissance layout gathered around the austere bulk of the Ducal Palace once the seat of the state government and the residence of the Cybo-Malaspina family (the rulers of Massa and Carrara) and today partly the seat of the prefecture and partly an exhibition center The center gathers at the foot of the Malaspina Castle which was also transformed during the Renaissance to make it a residence more suited to the new times (today it has also become home to the Uffizi Diffusi project) full of clubs and elegant stores and boutiques a Madonna by Pinturicchio; monumental squares such as Piazza Aranci and Piazza Mercurio; the Diocesan Museum which allows a journey through local art from the 15th to the 19th century; and then just outside the Villa della Rinchiostra the former residence of the Cybo-Malaspina family the hamlet lying on the shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea is a regular destination for lively seaside tourism Carrara’s marble quarries are world-famous for their production of high-quality marble which has been used since Roman times for buildings and works of art such as Michelangelo’s David or Pieta (the great Renaissance artist often traveled to Carrara to select marble in person) To learn about the long history of marble quarrying in Carrara an ancient quarry used since Roman times and now an open-air museum Carrara’s three marble basins produce different types of marble and other marbles in demand worldwide. Each type has unique color and veining characteristics and the choice of marble often depends on the specific needs of the project Marble quarrying is a challenging and often spectacular process: today quarrymen use both modern and traditional equipment to extract large blocks of marble from the walls of quarries and transport them down the mountain to be further processed in local workshops Visitors have the opportunity to take part in guided tours of Carrara’s marble quarries organized by private agencies scattered throughout the area (most quarries are closed to the public as workplaces so it is necessary to contact specialized parties to visit them) often conducted in 4x4 vehicles that climb the very steep quarry routes offer a unique opportunity to explore the quarries learn about the history and process of marble extraction and admire views otherwise precluded to visitors traveling alone Marina di Massa and Cinquale: these are the three hamlets of the three respective municipalities (Carrara Massa and Montignoso) that make up the Apuan Riviera the narrow strip of land facing the Ligurian Sea becoming one of Tuscany’s most popular areas for seaside tourism partly because the three resorts are characterized by different types of tourism (Marina di Carrara and Marina di Massa are the typical choice of those who appreciate family or otherwise quiet and relaxing tourism while Cinquale is a favorite resort for those who want to get closer to the bustling nightlife of nearby Versilia) The Apuan Riviera is known for its golden sandy beaches and clean waters (the three municipalities have often been awarded the Blue Flag). The coastal resorts offer options for spending relaxing days at the beach Plenty of bathing establishments cover almost the entire coastline but there is still no shortage of free beaches or cliffs A small fortified village (the name “Filetto” perhaps derives from the Greek word filakterion meaning precisely “fortified place”) with very ancient origins: perhaps a village existed here between the 6th and 7th centuries Filetto is worth visiting because it has kept its medieval appearance perfectly intact (so much so that today it is the site of several festivals and themed re-enactments precisely because it is rare to find such well-preserved villages) Filetto opens to the visitor with its stone buildings and the 17th-century palace of the Marquis Ariberti it is impossible to pass up a visit to the Selva di Filetto a mysterious and fascinating chestnut forest that can be counted among the most magical places in the province of Massa-Carrara as it is believed to have been the site of ancient rituals of the Liguri Apuani (this is attested to by the fact that eleven stele statues have been found here) A legend that the inhabitants like to pass on to each other has it that Dante Alighieri who stayed in Lunigiana between 1306 and 1307 as a guest of the Malaspina family drew inspiration for his “dark forest” precisely from the forest of Filetto Fosdinovo is a charming medieval village located in Lunigiana which attracts visitors interested in the history and culture of these lands The Malaspina Castle is the main monument in the village: it dates back to the 14th century and is one of the best preserved castles in Lunigiana dominates the village and offers spectacular views of the surrounding valley Also of considerable importance is the church of San Remigio which is anticipated by a scenic marble staircase and whose interior houses splendid monuments and altars also made of marble Also of ancient origin is the Oratorio dei Bianchi which is notable for its extraordinary 17th-century façade made entirely of slabs of off-white marble The surrounding hills offer opportunities for hikes and nature walks but Fosdinovo is also a place where it is possible to savor the best of local cuisine of restaurants and trattorias offering traditional Lunigiana dishes This is how one could define Fivizzano: in fact the Province of Massa-Carrara has a history mostly unrelated to that of the rest of the region the territory was for centuries an autonomous state that had little to do with what was decided in and around Florence however: it was one of the few villages in Lunigiana administered by the Florentines from ancient times it was 1477 when Fivizzano came under Florence and today the town’s historic center is the only one with a distinctly Florentine imprint in the area as attested (right from its name) by the very central Piazza Medicea with its neat Renaissance palaces and the fountain built by Cosimo III de’ Medici starting with the altarpiece on the high altar of the church of Santi Jacopo e Antonio painted by the Florentine Pier Francesco Foschi castles (such as that of Verrucola) are worth visiting in addition to the hills and mountains of the Apuan Alps Park within easy reach of the town center Slovenian national champion Jakob Omrzel was severely affected in a serious accident that occurred during Stage 1 of the Giro della Lungiana race in Italy. According to Slovenian media his life was in critical condition for a period following the crash The incident involved Italian cyclist Jacopo Sasso and one of the organizer’s motorcycles While it was initially thought that the motorcycle was to blame it later became clear that a security guard Omrzel, who is 18 years old, suffered the most severe injuries. Italian media reported that he experienced a heart attack due to a deep cut on his neck He was quickly transported to a hospital in La Spezia For the 2025 season, Omrzel will race with the Continental team CTF Victorious and is expected to join a WorldTour team in the near future. He has even been called the “next Tadej Pogačar.” After the race, the organizer of the event took to X to make a statement in the first kilometres of the opening stage of the Giro della Lunigiana Jacopo Sasso and Slovenian national champion Jakob Omrzel,” the post read “Contrary to what has been reported by some parties the riders’ impact did not occur against an organizational bike but against a safety officer who was signalling a dangerous situation Omrzel and the security officer were promptly rescued and transported to the hospital in La Spezia where they are still hospitalized and conscious Stage 2 of the Giro della Lungiana was cancelled on Thursday due to bad weather The race is expected to resume on Friday with a 37.1 km stage from Sarzana to Marina di Massa The Italian Carrara in the early 20th century: it’s Novecento a Carrara the exhibition that animates the Tuscan exhibition season from June 24 to October 29 at Palazzo Cucchiari home of the Giorgio Conti Foundation in Carrara’s historic center curated by Massimo Bertozzi and organized by the Giorgio Conti Foundation which starts from a consideration: Carrara has always been associated with sculpture although the first important workshops date back only to the 18th century: that of sculpting marble is a centuries-old habit that has adapted over time to the transformations of expressive languages and that has always been based on the transmission of techniques and great manual skill But there is more to Carrara than sculpture: the city was in fact a fruitful artistic hub where many of the greatest painters and sculptors met.So in the elegant rooms of the 19th-century Palazzo Cucchiari it will be possible to admire more than 120 works of both sculpture (in marble with the intention of providing the broadest possible view of a major artistic season in the Tuscan city Dedicated to the paths of updating figurative languages and the artistic panorama of Carrara in the first half of the last century the exhibition unravels through two artistic directions: on the one hand that of the line leading from Art Nouveau to Novecentismo and abstractionism; on the other hand from solid verism to poetic naturalism and “spatial fragmentation,” in a continuous interweaving of sculpture painting and neighboring artistic expressions exhibiting works by the greatest artists of the first part of the century and several artists from the local school such as Arturo Dazzi up to a pioneer of monumental abstraction such as Carlo Sergio Signori The works on loan come from private collections and museums such as the Uffizi the Galleria d’Arte Moderna of Palazzo Pitti in Florence the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Turin the Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Viareggio and the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca in Rome The exhibition’s narrative begins with Leonardo Bistolfi who in the early 20th century introduced the themes and models of Symbolist sculpture into the technical and formal baggage of his craftsmen in Carrara and the taste for line and two-dimensional composition that helped renew the language of sculpture at least until the first signs of the return to order after World War I would also direct Carrara’s workshops along the paths of classical recomposition of form During the 1930s (the decade on which most of the exhibition focuses) the classical purity of Francesco Messina and the Novecentist forms of Mario Sironi and Fausto Melotti (who is also on display at Palazzo Cucchiari with one of his first abstract experiments The same period also marks the arrival of Arturo Martini thanks precisely to Carrara and his relationship with Apuan studios and artisans discovered unexpected possibilities for reinvigorating from within and precisely in relation to what seems the most compromised material The exhibition thus gives an opportunity to appreciate the Martini who alludes to the process of breaking down the form who wracks his brain around the plastic function of shadows who conceives and encloses in a form the Atmosphere of a head the sculptor who senses that the sculpture of tomorrow will be what his pupil is nevertheless convinced that he must consume to the full every expressive potential of the figure Viani himself would arrive in Carrara to give marble texture to the soft volumes of his plaster casts abstract sculpture had found another way to land on Carrara marble In 1946 Carlo Sergio Signori arrived from Paris with the requirement to create the Monument to the Rosselli Brothers for Bagnoles-de-l’Orne (the first monument of European art in abstract form) and the exact measure of the ability to renew an ancient tradition is given precisely by what might appear to be only an occasional episode for in the end it will not be just by chance that Europe’s first abstract monument is made in Carrara and in a material under strong suspicion of passatism will become a “Carrarino,” inserting himself within the tradition of the marmorari but in collision with the academic tradition as was that of the continuity between Carlo Fontana Arturo Dazzi and their numerous progeny who made their bones in the great public building sites and in the proliferation of monuments in the 1930s: Valmore Gemignani and Sergio Vatteroni ending with the “professors,” also continuers of school teaching The paths of sculpture were then intertwined with those of painting sometimes as a parallel discipline of the same artist (sculptors such as Arturo Dazzi and Arturo Martini practiced painting assiduously) while on the other hand the painter Mario Sironi made himself a sporadic “sculptor” in Carrara Just as some suggestions to the updating of painting came to Carrara through the sculptors And then the growth of painters in the academic scene with the emergence of a figure like that of Pietro Pelliccia who of the Carrara Academy would become its quarries and landscapes became pictorial motifs the protagonist of the "Republic of Apua,“ to whom a room of the exhibition is dedicated who with the portrait of the Viareggio man would create one of his first works in marble These would be accompanied by a long series of painters: some ”natives“ such as Giuseppe Viner or Giulio Marchetti and Gino Montruccoli; others ”outsiders" such as Domenico Cucchiari young people studying at the Academy of Fine Arts easily found the opportunity to complete their training by attending workshops where it is possible to perfect the craft and at the same time witness the making of all sorts of sculptures A context in which everyone teaches something just as they are there to learn something else: because sculpture is learned only where it is made The exhibition concludes at the years of reconstruction on the threshold of Italy’s “second modernity,” when with the economic boom and the Council reviving the social as well as religious function of sacred art a new season opened for Carrara sculpture and marble the Giorgio Conti Foundation," says President Franca Conti "welcomes to the rooms of Palazzo Cucchiari a new chapter in the long history of Carrara marble and figurative culture Following the exhibitions Canova and the Masters of Marble and After Canova well-articulated and very indicative exhibition tour of Carrara’s modern history through the developments of its artistic and cultural traditions the economic and social development of Carrara and the Apuan region in the first half of the last century serves as a stage for the interweaving of the research paths of some of the leading masters of Italian art: sculptors and painters who in the ’land of marble,’ vented lowering themselves within a centuries-old tradition their imagination and verified in the practice of work the actual possibility of participating in the processes of renewal of classical art is once again to help our city to strengthen the awareness of the international prominence of the ’marble civilization,’ emphasizing the importance of enhancing the artistic aspects for the preservation of a unique beautiful and therefore very precious material." “In Carrara,” explains curator Massimo Bertozzi “the 20th century was not a ’short century.’ The transition between the 1800s and the 1900s was quick fast almost instantaneous; the new century began immediately The ’bleak fin of the dying century’ had been all too tragic and painful the one of 1894 generated by intestine issues the so-called ’Lunigiana uprisings’ with General Huesch’s Alpine troops chasing and capturing quarrymen up and down the Apuan Alps a consequence of the bread revolt in Milan satiated with cannon fire by General Bava Beccaris The ’countries of anarchy,’ as a poet whose work we shall hear more of were crushed by a ’court of giberne’ which had hundreds of workers arrested who could return to their families very slowly waiting in the confines of the homelands for the next amnesty or pardon which were then fortunately very frequent.” From these events begins the exhibition which starts with Carlo Fontana’s Farinata degli Uberti brought to Venice in 1903 a work juxtaposed with Rodin’s lesson that becomes almost a symbol of the new Apuan artistic vitality which can be said to have fully restarted with the publication of Apua Mater (1905) by Ceccardo Roccatagliata Ceccardi a poet around whom some young people gathered and founded the magazine “Apua Giovane,” which which will be called “Apua Republic” or even Fratellanza Apuana when around the five founders the best cultural and artistic intentions of the region stretching around the Apuan Alps Here began the rediscovery of Apuan “myths”: references to ancient Luni Michelangelo’s in Carrara and Carducci’s in Pietrasanta animated a lively cultural scene a climate in which the personalities of Viani following which even in Carrara there was a climate of return to order represented in the exhibition by the works of Carlo Carrà Ardengo Soffici and local artists who embodied this cultural temperament (above all Arturo Dazzi) if before the war there had been a frenzied focus among artists on secessionist fibrillations which by many rivulets would end up in Apuania as well Anomalous in this climate is the figure of Sergio Vatteroni who while producing rhetorical works such as the Cavatore and the Scultore for Carrara’s Palazzo delle Poste (Post Office Building) keeps to the fringe positions with the consequence that his art rejects almost on principle the idea that there existed an order to return to: his fidelity to the real happens in the groove of the secessions with the return of an ornamental fluidity of line and the persistence of a tame expressionism and a brightness of impression that is almost divisionist The exhibition does not lack hints of the celebratory exhibitions of the 1930s nor of Mario Sironi’s Novecentismo and thanks to his relationship with Apuan studios and artisans discovered unexpected possibilities for renewing from within and in confrontation with what to him seemed the most compromised material then follows the line of Alberto Viani and Carlo Sergio Rosselli which ideally closes the exhibition by pushing into the second half of the century It is the longest canvas artwork ever created by a single artist: it is titled Walk of peace and is the work of an Italian artist with which Fruzzetti intends to enter the Guinness World Records book for the “longest painting by a single artist” (the record currently belongs to India’s Gurmej Singh exhibited a 3.4-kilometer painting).Fruzzetti’s painting on the Versilia coastline: it will start from the pier in Forte dei Marmi pass through the hamlet of Cinquale in the municipality of Montignoso and end in Marina di Massa (Municipality of Massa The different parts will be assembled starting in the morning and the work will remain on display until 6:30 pm the Guinness World Records jury will take the measurement necessary for certification appointment with the press conference (which can be followed on Fruzzetti’s social channels: @LucaFruzzetti on Facebook and @dale.artheritage on Instagram) with the presence of the three mayors of the host municipalities the director of the Academy of Fine Arts of Carrara and the president of the association “I Colori per la Pace” (which promoted the exhibition) the work will be unmounted and much of it will find a home in some contemporary art museums around the world preserving the message of restart from a global perspective The idea is to create a work of art that is a symbol of life peace and restart: a painting that is meant to be a sign of optimism and hope for the future through the colors of peace The work will consist of fifty rainbows that follow one another continuously “The rainbow,” the artist explains “always leaves us with that pleasant feeling of wonder and amazement: awe and lightness that populate the work through graceful butterflies that flit between meadows and oceans of color.” is sponsored by the Colors for Peace Association a world peace propaedeutics project that collects children’s drawings a module of the work will be donated to the Association and on September 21 it will be displayed in Rome at the Colosseum The project enjoys the contribution of several companies from all over Italy that have aground off Italy's Tuscan coast due to bad weather measuring more than 100 metres (330 feet) long was harboured at the port of Marina di Carrara near Massa "when the force of the waves caused the anchor to shift and the vessel to drift dangerously towards the coast" the ship struck a pier to the south at Massa Rescuers intervened to pull the ship's 12-member crew told local media he was concerned about the possibility of spilled fuel though there had not yet been any indication of a leak He said the ship contained 102 tons of diesel calling it "potentially a small ecological bomb" "Obviously the weather conditions in the ocean don't allow us to understand exactly in what condition the ship is in whether there has been a steady spilling of diesel," he said in a video posted on Facebook Feb 21, 2020 | , The Italian Air Force’s National Aerobatic Team, Il Frecce Tricolori The focus of the anniversary will be a two day show at their home base of Rivolto The 2010 World Congress of the International Marxist Tendency which took place in Marina di Massa a seaside town in Tuscany represented a great step forward for the International Nigeria and Russia because of visa and passport difficulties The discussions on World Perspectives are the foundations from which everything else flows in terms of the perspectives and work in each country A very comprehensive lead-of was given by comrade Alan Woods who emphasized that the main lines of the perspectives of the International are entirely confirmed by the march of events The instability on a world scale has only deepened since the World Perspectives document was drafted Alan Woods speaking on World Perspectives The scale of the present crisis is immense reflecting all the contradictions that have been piling up for the last 30 years The period we are now entering will not be like the last period Not only can the bourgeoisie not afford any new reforms It cannot afford to maintain the reforms that were conquered in the past The perspective is one of years or decades of low living standards Comrade Stamatis Karagianopoulos explaining the political situation in Greece But the bourgeoisie faces a serious problem The working class has been enormously strengthened for the last 50 years Its organizations are fundamentally intact Italy and other countries are not going to accept the destruction of the elements of a civilized existence without a fight The stage will be set for an explosion of the class struggle on a world scale Comrade Graham Day from New Zealand “The question is therefore not whether the workers will fight,” Alan emphasized “The question is whether this International will be in a position to intervene in a serious way in the movements that will inevitably occur.” during which a large number of amendments were considered There was an interesting discussion on the Italian amendments on fascism and Bonapartism While much of what the comrades said in their amendment was correct the majority felt that some of the formulations weren't quite precise enough and that it was more of a possible perspective in the future Voting taking place Some of the amendments of the Brazilian comrades were remitted so that a full discussion can be organised throughout the International The final version of the World Perspectives document The important discussion on the Work in the Mass Organizations was also excellent and showed a high level of political maturity Comrade Fred Weston speaking on work in the mass organisations Fred pointed out that the IMT is obliged to wage a constant struggle against both opportunism and ultra-leftism The differences in our ranks that led to the departure of the majority of the former Spanish section and small groups of individuals in some other countries in the last year really boil down to differences on this question Fred stressed the message of The Communist Manifesto and Lenin’s Left Wing Communism an Infantile Disorder that the approach of Marxists is to go to the working class wherever they may be Comrade Lal Khan from Pakistan In the course of a very lively discussion there were many interesting contributions Despite the horrendous degeneration of the PPP leadership there were two million people on the streets to welcome her He said: “We have to be where the masses are” reflecting the experience of the last 15 years was long overdue and a welcome and needed addition to the political education of the cadres of the IMT Comrade Euler Calzadilla from Venezuela The experience the IMT has passed through in the last year and a half was concentrated in the World Congress The mood was one of confident but sober enthusiasm for the future as our political perspectives are being confirmed and our methods are slowly but surely giving us concrete results both quantitatively and above all qualitatively The balance sheet of the last period was given by Fred Weston It was generally considered to be a very good lead-off which concentrated on the political basis for the recent disputes in the International Comrade Fred drew a balance sheet of the experience we have just been through with a sober analysis of the fundamental roots and genesis of the crisis and above all a look at the political differences that had accumulated over a period precisely at the moment the world economic crisis hit There was no reason why these differences should have led to a split but it is quite wrong to say that there were no political differences There were actually quite serious differences have been debated within the International and not used as a pretext for splitting the IMT Carlos Marquez from Mexico The splits in the IMT were not the result of secondary issues or small differences of opinion These differences had been developing over a long time The “final straw” appears to be the result of either something trivial But necessity expresses itself through accident The last year has been a serious test for our International But we will have emerged strengthened if we are able to use the experience to raise the political level of all comrades One of the positives of this situation is the discussion we have opened up in relation to the work in the mass organizations This is also part of the balance sheet of the whole period The leaders of the former Spanish section preferred to split the International rather than accept the offer of a political debate But they took hardly anybody else with them Only in two sections (Mexico and Venezuela) did they have any support and a clear majority of the active membership in Venezuela remained firmly with the International We are reorganizing our forces in Spain after the split-off of the former Spanish majority In the Autumn the comrades will hold a congress and publish a paper We have had to fight a battle on two fronts In Spain we were clearly dealing with an ultra left and sectarian deviation In Sweden the problem was precisely the opposite: a revisionist and organically opportunist tendency the latter represented a handful of people internationally and had little or no effect on the work of the International The very firm opinion of the comrades in Sweden is that this split was a positive and inevitable development The same view is held by the comrades in Venezuela Many comrades intervened in the discussion of this point While it was felt that we needed to analyse our mistakes honestly and draw the necessary conclusions the view of most comrades was that as far as the IMT is concerned Comrade Greg Oxley from France expressed the views of many delegates when he said: “Let’s turn the page and move on.” Comrade Ana Munoz The organizational report was delivered by comrade Ana Munoz who gave a very comprehensive overview of the International Comrade Ana reported that there is so much going on internationally and new possibilities arising and groups developing and are preparing to launch a website soon Comrade Alessandro Giardiello from Italy In Italy the situation in Pomigliano Fiat is a real turning point for the section and the Italian working class (See website for the very exciting and inspiring reports) The Italian comrades are right in the eye of the hurricane on this The work in Rifundazione Comunista is still important The Marxist tendency won the support of 40 branches in the last Congress of the RC and it holds a majority in many locals The Congress heard from a new section in New Zealand who made a big sacrifice to travel to Europe to be able to attend the IEC and the World Congress For the last 3 or 4 years comrades have been patiently developing the work and step by step they have become a viable section They now have a regular paper and are conducting work in the Labour Party and the unions Comrade Leonardo Badell from Venezuela Morocco is our first section in Arab world the comrades were unable to attend because of visa difficulties mainly through the Arab-language website of the IMT (Marxy.com) They also publish a paper and conduct work among the students They are working in various areas of the country and have begun to do work in the unions as well The work in Iran deserves a special mention After the desertion of a handful of people the Iranian group is developing far faster and better than before It is the unanimous view of the Iranian comrades that these people was holding the work back and discrediting the IMT in the eyes of politically active Iranians and that it would have been impossible to advance as long as we were associated with them The Iranian comrade who spoke at the Congress caused a very good impression. He informed the Congress of the publication of the new group’s website Mobareze.org They distributed 1,000 copies of our first leaflet in at least four different cities on June 12 the anniversary of last year’s rigged election One week later they published a paper called Mobarezeye Tabagathi which was distributed in two cities and has been very well received The comrades are translating Trotsky’s book on Fascism and the Bolshevism – the Road to Revolution into Farsi There are contacts and individual comrades or small groups in a dozen other countries such as Cuba The work in Ireland has taken an important step forward with the launching of a paper We are preparing to hold a founding congress in India The overall picture of the work of the sections was very positive but on the contrary a sense of quiet and confident optimism The Pakistan section of the IMT has to work in the most difficult and dangerous conditions in the world There is a daily horror show of bad news: power cuts More people are killed in violence from bombings and assassinations in Pakistan than Afghanistan and Iraq combined One of the responsibilities of one of the full timers is to call every region daily to make sure all the comrades are still alive Comrade Lal Khan from Pakistan spoke of the terrible devastation caused by the floods: thousands of people in Pakistan have lost their lives in the flood and 20 million have been affected The floods were directed away from the fields where it would have destroyed the crops into the villages where it was only people who would be destroyed formed to help the IS develop the work in the Americas The work in Latin America is developing very well The new edition of America Socialista has just come out and plans are being made for the next Pan-American School of the IMT which will be held in Brazil at the end of March In the international workers' movement (as opposed to the rarified sub-world of the sectarian email lists and Facebook) the political authority of the IMT has never been higher Our ideas are reaching a wider audience than ever and are getting an echo The success of our website Marxist.com has been phenomenal and continues to grow In the past twelve months there have been 1.15 million visitors to In Defense of Marxism – an increase of 17% since last year We need to understand how we are perceived outside the International People from every single country have visited IDOM There has been a 23% increase in visits from U.S The largest number of hits was to the Tet Offensive article (40,000 visits) A large number of people are watching this International very carefully The final session was introduced by comrade Niklas Albin Svensson who stressed the willingness of many comrades to sacrifice a lot for the International There is a remarkable willingness to support the work as shown by the very successful campaigns to pay for the Bolivian printer and also the Indonesia book appeal Many sections have decided to raise their International dues by 10% And many sections have stepped up to take on expenses related to work of International We raised the biggest collection in Winter Collection Even without the large donation we received from the Spanish section in the past the total amount was double last year’s: 12,000 euro the World Congress collection raised a record amount: over 40,000 Euros This was another concrete reflection of the general mood of political enthusiasm for the work of the IMT that permeated the Congress The Congress showed clearly that the IMT has emerged strengthened not weakened by the disputes of the last year It was clear from the excellent quality of the speeches from the delegates that an important layer of younger comrades has emerged in the course of this experience which is willing to learn The mood both in and out of the sessions was one of quiet optimism There were a lot of conversations in the evenings between comrades from different sections As a result of an initiative taken by some young comrades with the attendance of about 30 comrades from 10 different sections It was agreed to produce a Manifesto on Art on the lines of the Manifesto for a Revolutionary and Independent Art that Trotsky wrote together with Andre Breton in the 1930s Comrades singing the Internationale at the end of the congress This 2010 World Congress marked a closure to the period of the split-away of the former Spanish leaders and it is time to turn our energies outward and build the organization to take advantage of the many opportunities opening up for us The enthusiasm and optimism of the delegates and visitors at the Congress was expressed in the record collection which was a concrete reflection of the mood throughout the International based on a clearer understanding of our methods and perspectives Comrade Alan Woods answered those who have lately been pronouncing the IMT dead Quoting the words of the famous American writer Mark Twain to general laughter: “rumors of my death have been exaggerated” Calling the delegates’ attention to the fact that this was the seventieth anniversary of the assassination of Trotsky Alan stressed the need to remind ourselves who we are and where we come from In moving terms he underlined the terrible problems facing Trotsky in the last period of his life the persecutions and personal torment suffered by Lev Davidovich and Natalia Sedova and their absolute dedication to the cause: “the only cause worth fighting for: the cause of the emancipation of the working class.” all the delegates and visitors came to their feet and sang the International with an unmistakable fighting spirit (We hope to publish fuller versions of the lead-offs and documents in the near future) This website uses cookies, you
