Giulia Martinengo Marquet (ITA) and the 11-year-old gelding Delta Del’Isle (Tibet Tame x Grain de Soleil) won Friday’s CSI5*-W 1.55m presented by Selleria Equipe as the 2024-edition of Jumping Verona in Italy got underway with its five-star action.
Twenty out of the 47 horse-and-rider combinations at start cleared the first-round track set by Italy’s very own Uliano Vezzani in this 1.55m competition counting for the Longines Rankings Group C
with five riders opting not to return for the jump-off
only four pairs managed to deliver another clear with Martinengo Marquet and Delta Del’Isle clocking the fastest time when crossing the finish line 35.87 seconds – much to the delight of the enthusiastic Italian crowds
“I am so happy,” Martinengo Marquet said afterwards
“It is a little bit like a home show for me
He gives me the confidence to try hard and be fast
I trust him so much and I believe he knows how much I love him
I need to thank the big team that is behind Delta
so there are many people I need to thank for this result.”
Having posted the first clear in the jump-off
Mario Stevens (GER) and Starissa (Stakkato Gold x Quidam’s Rubin) had to settle for second in 37.27
while Kevin Jochems (NED) and Camilla van de Helle (Crumble x Casall) placed third in 37.74
followed by Lara Tryba (FRA) and Memphis Z (Mylord Carthago x Candillo) in fourth in 39.86
The fifth place went to Julien Anquetin (FRA) and Farah Tame (Quadrio Tame x Panama Tame)
who posted the fasted time in the competition – 33.73 – but paid for the risk with a fence down
The second CSI5*-W class of the day – a 1.50m presented by Banca Passadore counting for the Longines Rankings Group D – went to Emanuele Gaudiano (ITA) and Nikolaj de Music (Kannan x Nabab de Reve) ahead of Barbara Schnieper (SUI) and Judy KM (Joly St
Huber x Saphir von der Rossi) in second and Jérôme Guery (BEL) on Great Britain V (Nabab de Reve x Carolus H) in third

Less than a month after the closing of the major exhibition The Renaissance in Brescia
the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo starts again from March 11
2025 with a new exhibition proposal that enhances ancient art
thanks to the collaboration between the Municipality of Brescia
the Brescia Musei Foundation and theAteneo di Scienze
which is part of the PTM program Andata e Ritorno
features two neoclassical masterpieces: Two Socratic Scenes by Giovanni Battista Gigola (Brescia
1841) and The Birth of Venus by Giuseppe Bezzuoli (Florence
1784 - 1855).The initiative is part of the format devised by Brescia Musei
which transforms departures related to loans into arrivals of works of great value
thus giving visitors the opportunity to see masterpieces that dialogue with the permanent Collection of the Pinacoteca
this format has enabled the museum to host works by artists of international caliber
the two works on display will offer a new perspective on the themes covered by the museum’s collection
The works on display have been recently restored and will be accompanied by two free notebooks that delve into the specifics of the works
edited by Fernando Mazzocca for Two Socratic Scenes and Roberta D’Adda for The Birth of Venus
Maria Repossi’s graphic design also oversaw the visual identity of this exhibition
which emphasizes the historical and cultural value of the works
was a leading figure in Italian Neoclassicism
these works represent a fusion of the artist’s academic training and the influences he received from the Roman academies of the time
both inspired by episodes from the life of Socrates
are characterized by the refined use of colors and glazed tones
which lend volume and depth to the figures depicted
the scene dedicated to Agathon’s Convite with Alcibiades crowning Socrates
derived from a drawing by Asmus Jacob Carstens
is an example of the latter’s influence on Gigola
combining the German artist’s visionary approach with the Brescian miniaturist’s chromatic sensibility
The second miniature on display depicts Socrates rebuking Alcibiades caught in the gynaeceum
The two scenes are an expression of a theme dear to neoclassical artists
that of the dialogue between master and disciple
and show Gigola’s acquisition of classical poetics
reworked through his sensitivity and innovative techniques
Gigola’s works were the subject of a delicate restoration that restored their full legibility
The restoration involved both the pictorial surfaces and the antique frames
restoring the original beauty of the works
The intervention was conducted by Licia Zorzella
whose work revealed all the artist’s technical expertise
Giuseppe Bezzuoli’s The Birth of Venus is also an excellent example of Italian Neoclassicism
which was initially cited as Galatea in historical inventories
is closely linked to the history of Brescian collecting and the patronage of Paolo Tosio
Bezzuoli sent the Brescian count a version of Raphael’s School of Athens
but along with it he also delivered The Birth of Venus
a work that would help solidify his reputation
The composition recalls Raphael’s famous Triumph of Galatea
with the figure of the goddess Venus emerging from the shell
unlike the vividness of Raphael’s model
Bezzuoli gives his Venus a cooler light and a bright color scheme reminiscent of the French painting style of the time
such as the coral branch that the triton holds out to the goddess
demonstrates the artist’s ability to treat classical themes with a refined and innovative visual language
The PTM Andata e Ritorno exhibition is also an opportunity to further explore the history of Brescia’s artistic heritage
The two works on display are part of a larger project to enhance the city’s heritage
promoted by the Fondazione Brescia Musei in collaboration with the Ateneo di Scienze
The latter received in 1857 the gift of Giovanni Battista Gigola’s works
which had been kept by artist Angelo Inganni
Gigola’s miniatures have long been the subject of exchanges and transfers of ownership with the Brescia Civic Museums
and are now on public display after a long period of conservation in storage
Fondazione Brescia Musei recently renewed its deposit agreement with the University of Brescia
which received 46 works from the Tosio Collection for safekeeping
confirming the strong collaboration between local institutions for the enhancement of the city’s historical and cultural heritage
Fondazione Brescia Musei also organized a bimonthly meeting of the Lunch at the Museum with..
which provides short guided tours during the lunch break at the different museum venues
will be dedicated precisely to the works of Gigola and Bezzuoli
offering visitors a unique opportunity to discover these two masterpieces of Neoclassicism during an alternative and fascinating lunch break
“It is with pleasure,” says Francesco Tomasini
Brescia Municipality Councilor with responsibility for Cultural Activities
“that we return today to present a new appointment of the successful format that Fondazione Brescia Musei has created to enhance the works of our Civic Collections: after last year’s appointment that featured a painting by Mantegna
we are now presenting three works that have a profound significance in the very construction of Count Tosio’s collection and help us grasp the sensitivity he had in being a respectful and generous patron of artists
to whom he never failed to provide support
The PTM Andata e Ritorno project once again allows us to rediscover our heritage
which we can now admire in the halls of this extraordinary palace
a precious casket that holds our artistic heritage.”
"With the new edition of the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo Andata e Ritorno format that we are presenting today actually inaugurates the 2025 exhibition season of Fondazione Brescia Musei," says Francesca Bazoli
“Confirmed again this year is the great centrality of the civic heritage
the subject of contini restorations and temporary exhibitions
so that our public can constantly reflect on the history and richness of its Civic Collections
represented by such outstanding scientific resources as the external one of Professor Fernando Mazzocca
or internal forces such as conservator Roberta D’Adda
allows the building of bridges of study and research essential to the constant maintenance of our heritage
the collaboration with the Institute of the University of Brescia consolidates the presence of Brescia Musei as a bridge institution between the Administration and the city’s cultural scene
which proves to be of the highest order on this occasion as well.”
“Continuing in the fruitful collaboration that the Athenaeum of Brescia has undertaken with the Brescia Musei Foundation since 2018,” says Sergio Onger
President Athenaeum of Brescia Academy of Sciences Letters and Arts
"and which has seen the realization of numerous initiatives (suffice it to mention here the exhibitions held in Palazzo Tosio Dante and Napoleon
Founding Myths in Early Nineteenth-Century Brescian Culture in 2021 and Luigi Basiletti and the Ancient in 2023) we gladly collaborated on the exhibition curated by Fernando Mazzocca entitled Giovanni Battista Gigola
These are two works given in 1857 by Angelo Inganni to the Athenaeum from Gigola’s widow
Today’s press conference is also an opportunity to make public the loan agreement recently signed with Fondazione Brescia Musei
With this we have formalized the presence in Palazzo Tosio of the 39 works of art that had been transferred here in 2018
on the occasion of the setting up of the house museum
which arrived following the 2023 exhibition
which will arrive soon to complete the arrangement of the first room in the east wing
as it was in the first arrangement of the Pinacoteca in Palazzo Tosio in 1851
The Athenaeum hopes that after the exhibition in the Pinacoteca the two Socratic scenes by Giovanni Battista Gigola can be added to the artist’s other works housed in the alcove of Palazzo Tosio
(last admission 5:15 p.m.) - June 1 to Sept
Reduced over 65 and concessionary € 12.00
special publics and combined exhibition € 8.00
The temporary exhibition of ‘Due scene socratiche’ (Two Socratic Scenes) by Giovanni Battista Gigola is part of the programme PTM ANDATA E RITORNO
the format of Fondazione Brescia Musei that transforms the ‘departures’ linked to loan requests into ‘arrivals’ of guest works: an opportunity to welcome masterpieces into the rooms of the Pinacoteca that dialogue with the permanent collection
giving Brescians and tourists the opportunity to constantly reinterpret the rooms of the Museum according to new interpretations and new points of view
Room XX of the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo
sees the paintings by Andrea Appiani leave for the Musée National des Châteaux de Malmaison et de Bois-Préau that it usually hosts (the Madonna and Sleeping Child of c
1810) and that will be included in the important monographic exhibition Andrea Appiani (1754-1817)
Le peintre de Napoléon en Italie (from 16 March at the Château de Bois-Préau)
The occasion has thus made it possible to bring to the public’s attention
by an artist also linked to the Napoleonic court
appointed miniature portraitist of the Viceroy of Italy
The two sophisticated works of neoclassical taste by Giovanni Battista Gigola (1767-1841)
protagonists of the exhibition and a unicum in the Brescian artist’s production
can be traced back to a fundamental moment in his artistic training
namely the stay he spent in Rome in the last decade of the 18th century
In the papal city Gigola met and frequented the most avant-garde circles and academies
where neoclassical poetics was being elaborated
the stimuli that were later fundamental for his original experiments
Gigola’s degree of updating and insertion into the Roman environment is well documented by the episode dedicated to Agathon’s Banquet
with the scene of Alcibiades crowning Socrates
which is punctually derived from a magnificent drawing by Asmus Jacob Carstens (1754-1798) that the Brescian probably had the opportunity to admire in 1795
on the occasion of an exhibition of the German artist’s works
exerted a profitable influence on his contemporaries
a faithful translation of the original graphic invention
is characterised by saturated colours and glazed tones that enhance the volumes of the figures
The artist matured an astonishing chromatic sensitivity also thanks to his knowledge of the debate on the ancient encaustic technique
which developed at the time in the Roman environment among artists
Gigola produced a pendant of the same size in which he depicted
in a very similar composition and with the same stylistic imprint
a widely diffused classical subject: Socrates scolds Alcibiades caught in the gynaecium
The striking thematic and formal affinity between the two miniatures dedicated to Socratic subjects can be attributed to two alternative hypotheses: Gigola may have been inspired by another watercolour by Carstens that has been lost in the course of time
demonstrating his maturity at the end of his Roman sojourn
he may have attempted an original invention of his own
in any case inspired by the prototype to which he had already paid homage
it was also possible to enhance the two works through restoration work by Licia Zorzella
which involved the painted surfaces and antique frames
Restoring the full legibility of the subjects allows us to admire the technical expertise of Gigola
an undisputed master in the art of miniature painting

the other net from the barrage was achieved by French rider Lara Tryba (39”86
at the stable we call him ‘the Prince ’ - the words of a moved Giulia - And I am proud of my whole team
Jumping Verona is my home horse competition for me
so a victory like this is even more special
On the course I felt incredible joy after the decisive net
because he advised me to ride wide and not tight before the cage-that was really valuable!"
today's was the second career victory in the Jumping Verona arena

“What drives me is a total passion for horses; getting to know them
learning to understand them and feeling like they understand me,” Italy’s Giulia Martinengo Marquet tells World of Showjumping
“I am lucky to have a very supportive husband
He takes care of a lot; he manages the whole team
which makes it possible for me to focus solely on riding.”
With the 11-year-old Delta Del’Isle (Tibet Tame x Grain de Soleil)
the 45-year-old placed fifth in the CSI5* 1.60m Rolex Grand Prix in Windsor
and in the CSIO5* 1.60m Intesa Sanpaolo Nations Cup in Rome
the two delivered a clear in the second round for the Italian team
While she might not be a regular face within the five-star circuit week in and week out
Martinengo Marquet keeps surfacing successfully time and time again
her influence is felt through the horses she has produced for the highest level
such as Jeanne Sadran’s Jiamo VDS (Thunder vd Zuuthoeve x Carolus II) and Derin Demirsoy’s Elzas (Diamant de Semilly x Cornet Obolensky)
Martinengo Marquet competed at the 2019 FEI Jumping European Championships in Rotterdam (NED) – one of the five Europeans she has done between 1998 and 2019.
Martinengo Marquet comes from the east of Italy
“My mother was fully addicted to horses and very passionate about the sport,” she tells about her family
and my older brother Riccardo rides as well.”
Martinengo Marquet lives in the north of Italy
close to Lake Garda – between Verona and Milan
where she runs SGH stables that is focused on producing and selling talented showjumpers
“We thought about moving abroad when we first started our business,” she explains
we enjoy the Italian lifestyle and decided to stay – and I think it's the best choice we ever made
it is still close enough to central Europe
We usually start the season in Spain and from March to May we are mostly in Italy
and then during the summer we try to compete a little bit more abroad.”
What drives me is a total passion for horses; getting to know them
learning to understand them and feeling like they understand me
between the young ones and the older ones,” she continues
“We always had the same format; we select and buy young horses
breed a few from our top mares and develop them. Since the overall number of horses has grown
we normally have either one or two jumping riders working with us
We keep the four-year-olds at a different place to slowly start their jumping career
We always want them to stay quite a long time in the field
We don't stress them too much; they come over to our place when they are five. At the moment
we have quite a large group between the youngsters and the experienced ones
but only a few of them are ready for the highest level.”
“If you would ask Stefano what excites him the most
it is going around and scouting for horses
developing that potential and then selling the horse further; it is not only a matter of money to keep the business running – the satisfaction comes as a reward for the work done and what we believe in,” Martinengo Marquet says.
Martinengo Marquet’s sports career has also been made possible by her enrollment in the Italian Air Force for the past 19 years
“I am very thankful for their support,” she says.
Martinengo Marquet met her husband Stefano twenty years ago
and the two started a business and a family together; their daughter Bianca was born in 2013
Stefano put his international riding career on hold to focus more on managing
giving Giulia the opportunity to pursue her goals in the sport
“I'm lucky that Stefano takes care of so much
It's a big privilege and something that makes a huge difference
I am aware that many colleagues have to talk with the owners and clients
I am thankful to be in a position where I can put my telephone away when I get to the horses and give my full focus to them
I am also very thankful to all the sponsors that support us.“
I had to learn to be proud seeing so many horses we have produced go on to do well
buying and selling has always been our business
but I must say that it is something I had to learn to cope with,” she continues
I could feel a touch of frustration when a horse got sold
Building a young horse up for years and then seeing them leave just when I believed they were ready for the big sport was challenging
It was like turning a big switch in my mind; I had to learn to be proud seeing so many horses we have produced go on to do well
but most of the horses I rode in the biggest classes or at championships were horses we bought when they were young and produced ourselves
The bond you create when it starts this way is something fantastic
I love to know my horses inside out; it's something that motivates me.”
When it comes to riding and managing her horses
“I'm quite stubborn in trying to understand my horses,” she explains about her approach
“I feel like I'm failing if I don't understand a horse
I try to figure them out and in the end I'm so proud if I feel that they improve
Stefano helps me train and manage the stables every single day
We have worked with Michel Robert and Jos Kumps
because we appreciate getting an opinion from the outside.”
I feel like I'm failing if I don't understand a horse
“It's the way we like to work and a system that we believe in
I was taught to work with a long-term plan
He shows the world that it is possible to do this sport on the highest level while staying true to your own core values
And this is what I always want to believe in; not showing more and more every year
In an environment that offers so many possible excuses
sustainable way to be a part of this sport – even at the very top.”
“Each of us make decisions based on our own visions of the sport and how we want to treat our horses,” she points out
“I think that each rider can make a choice every time they enter a horse to a competition.”
As equestrian sports return to Paris 124 years after becoming part of the Olympic family
its stakeholders are under more pressure than ever as horse welfare concerns are increasing
but maybe not enough horsemanship,” Martinengo Marguet says when asked how she sees the current situation
“I think that too often patience and skills to develop a horse go missing
All stakeholders in our sport should have a better understanding of what horse welfare is truly about.”
I strongly feel that in all our decisions and daily pursuits we should never forget that the basis of everything is our love for the horse
many riders are super talented in the saddle
but I feel there is still a knowledge gap on other aspects of the sport,” she continues
I believe we have the responsibility to share more of our horsemanship and professional management skills
This also includes a better understanding of the economics connected to this sport; we cannot hide from what that entails
I think we should remind ourselves every now and then about the reasons we first started
The truth is that the horses are the main actors in our sport; anyone of us can be a superstar with a superstar of a horse
I really believe that we as riders can only be as good as our horses and we should always put them first.”
While Martinengo Marquet has found her way combining motherhood and a sports career
it is not an easy feat by any means and something she believes not everyone can do
“I have a wonderful team behind me,” she explains
“I try to be done at the stables before Bianca comes home from school so she doesn't only see her mother on a horse
I take her to the shows when there's something interesting to see – other than horses – and every now and then I allow her to miss school so that she can travel with us
Sometimes she stays at school until Friday and then joins us so that we can be together without forfeiting her education.”
I'm absolutely sure that it is far more challenging for women
“I'm really proud to say that our sport is the only sport where men and women compete together,” she continues
We have to combine raising a family with our sport careers and not everyone is lucky enough to have a big
Stefano decided to stop his sport career to give me a chance
and it is more common to see it the other way around
I think it is an attitude in our society; we are used to seeing women in a certain role
pursuing a professional career often means moving abroad which leaves many women to build a family
a business and a sport career without their closest support net – and that is not easy
Many women are forced to make a decision and many times it leads to them putting their career aside.”
the sport is very demanding now,” Martinengo Marquet points out
“The system kind of pushes you to compete every week: If you look at the ranking every single month
I enjoy national shows with the young or less experienced horses
it was also a conscious choice; I want to stay close to Bianca
“It's really easy for me to speak like this because I'm so happy,” Martinengo Marquet concludes
good professional people around me and I believe in the way we are doing things
in a family where horses always came first
having this mindset is not complicated for me; it’s not a difficult choice
I’m happy with the balance between doing shows on different levels
I feel blessed and happy to be there; happy for myself
There are so many things and so many dreams that I still want to chase
but I don’t worry about climbing the ranks
If it happens because we are doing really well
I like to look at the ranking only to see if I'm doing better than before
where we don’t have an endless amount of top horse-and-rider combinations
means that if I have a good horse and we have good results
Those shows are the best chance for me to improve my ranking
for the string of horses that I have right now
jumping five to six five-star shows in a year is a good number
I would like to jump again at the Europeans
and I never competed at the World Championships or the Olympics; there are so many things and so many dreams that I still want to chase.”

on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Associazione Amici di Palazzo Martinengo
will host an exhibition that will have as its theme the Belle Époque
a historical period marked by prosperity and artistic fervor between the late 19th and early 20th centuries
The exhibition is titled La Belle Époque
Art in the Paris of Boldini and De Nittis. The event is organized by the Friends of Palazzo Martinengo Association
under the patronage of the Province of Brescia
the Municipality of Brescia and the Fondazione Provincia di Brescia Eventi
Curated by art historians Francesca Dini and Davide Dotti
the exhibition will offer a journey through the Paris Belle Époque
many from private collections rarely accessible to the public and from prestigious museum institutions
the Giovanni Boldini Museum in Ferrara and the Museo Civico di Palazzo Te in Mantua
The works on display are the result of the talent of Italian artists who lived in Paris during those years
These painters knew how to conquer the French capital and its refined bourgeoisie
depicting in their canvases the crowded squares
Their works became true icons of modernity and progress
recounting through a unique style the beauty and elegance of everyday Parisian life
are portrayed in intimate moments and in moments of leisure
representing the charm and grace of the era
The exhibition is organized in an exhibition itinerary divided into nine sections
evoking the themes and atmosphere of the Belle Époque
Prominent among the masterpieces on display are Boldini’s famous Portrait of a Lady in White
one of the icons of painting of the era; De Nittis’s Beside the Pond in the Luxembourg Gardens
which captures a quiet moment in the hustle and bustle of the city; and Zandomeneghi’s Al Café Nouvelle Athènes
which immerses the viewer in the lively atmosphere of Parisian cafés
centers of sociability and intellectual confrontation
The selection also includes a collection of elegant women’s dresses
made by the most renowned Parisian tailors
which embellish the exhibition by adding an authentic touch to the historical re-enactment
There is also no shortage of examples of so-called “advertising art”: the posters
that advertised fashionable establishments
The works of famous illustrators such as Leonetto Cappiello
with their bright hues and modern typefaces
highlighting the importance of design and graphics in the visual art of the Belle Époque
Completing the exhibition will be artistic glassware by Emile Gallé and the Daum brothers
made using refined techniques such as engraving
which adorned the homes of the Parisian bourgeoisie and testify to the excellence of design of the period
The Belle Époque represents a historical period in which French art exerted a profound influence on artists throughout Europe
including the Italians who found Paris a culturally stimulating and modernizing environment
which took place in Paris and welcomed exhibitors from all over the world
promoted the image of France as an advanced and progressive nation
stimulating artists to experiment with new techniques and languages
Prominent among them were the so-called "Italians of Paris,“ a term coined by critic Diego Martelli to describe painters such as De Nittis and Boldini
who knew how to depict everyday Parisian life with an unmistakable style
creating what is known as the ”tranche de vie" genre
a snapshot of Parisian life captured in its most spontaneous and authentic moments
The exhibition also offers an opportunity to delve into the artistic evolution of Federico Zandomeneghi
a Venetian painter who embraced the Impressionist style with originality
characterizing his paintings with a bright and colorful palette
exalting the female figure in intimate and natural poses
with his sensitivity and technical virtuosity
poignantly portrays the youth of southern Italy
while Vittorio Corcos succeeds in immortalizing the joy and carefreeness of the Belle Époque
desired and celebrated throughout the world
Through the works of these Italian artists
Palazzo Martinengo aims to offer a journey into the Paris of the Belle Époque
an era that never ceases to fascinate contemporary audiences

marking a significant improvement in the energy efficiency of port operations
This savings is not only a benefit in terms of reducing operating costs
but also improves the overall efficiency of cargo handling in ports
The integration of the STS Transfer Line into port operations represents a significant step forward in terms of energy efficiency
Energy savings are achieved because the energy produced by the first container being lowered is used to save energy when the second container is being lifted at the opposite end
This system not only reduces operating costs through energy savings
but also improves cargo handling efficiency
making operations faster and more efficient
This approach to energy efficiency represents a step forward in the modernization and optimization of ports
Low energy consumption: +70% energy savings
this is achieved by balancing the containers at both ends
https://ststransferline.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/fondo_sostenibilidad_16x9_1.mp4
1.55 kg of CO2 are reduced for each container unloaded
a sustainable leap in quality that reduces emissions by 51%
It consumes 30% less energy and reduces carbon emissions
and focusing on the standards used by operators in the sector
the average reduction in emissions exceeds 1.55 kg CO2/TEU
an indicator that refers to emissions per unit of cargo transported

The inventor of STS Transfer Line is Juan Carlos Barberá Mayor
who brings his expertise in cutting-edge solutions to STS Transfer Line®
driving dramatic improvements in efficiency
sustainability and operational performance for crane operations globally
The world’s first container was invented in 1956 by Malcolm Purcell McLean
who revolutionized logistics by transporting containers by sea from New Jersey to Houston
2001) was an American entrepreneur and trucking magnate known for developing modern intermodal container transportation
to a family that was far from wealthy but not entirely without resources
young Malcolm learned that an oil company needed a manager for the Red Spring gas station
and a family friend lent him the money to buy his first load of gasoline
His rise began when he discovered that a truck driver was earning five dollars to supply the gas station with oil from Fayetteville
which was 45 km away: McLean applied for the job
McLean Trucking Company opened in March 1934
Family ties came in handy again: An acquaintance agreed to sell McLean a used dump truck for $3 a week
The key to McLean Trucking’s success was an obsessive focus on cutting costs
A trucking company could only hope to attract new customers if it offered lower rates than its competitors
His creative mind was constantly churning out ideas for how to make money
fearing for the fate of his business because of crowded highways and competition from national shipping lines
which could buy military freighters from the government for next to nothing
he had a brilliant idea: Instead of traveling along the busy coastal highways
why not put the trailers on ships and ferry them up and down the coast
McLean proposed new coastal terminals that would allow trucks to drive up ramps and deposit trailers aboard purpose-built ships
These ships would carry trailers between North Carolina
avoiding traffic jams at a time when highways were few and poorly connected
other trucks would pick up the trailers and carry them to their destination
the American entrepreneur made the gamble of his life by selling his trucking company for $25 million to buy the Pan Atlantic shipping company from Waterman Steamship Corporation
McLean changed his plans again: loading truck trailers onto ships was not cost-effective
since the wheels would take up too much space
McLean came up with an even more radical idea
A government program had made surplus World War II oil tankers available to shipping companies at rock-bottom prices
Pan-Atlantic would buy two of them and convert them to transport truck bodies
This would reduce the space occupied by each trailer by a third
a truck would pull up alongside the ship and the body
the trailer body would be lowered onto an empty chassis and transported to its destination
a hundred or so managers ate lunch at the Port of Newark watching the crane place a container every seven minutes on the Ideal-X
while the tanker was loaded with liquid products
Legend has it that as the ship was pulling away from the dock
a leader of the International Longshoremen’s Association
“I’d love to sink that son of a bitch.” The old union man also had a far-sighted mind and had sensed that the container would revolutionize transportation
he sold Sea-Land to tobacco entrepreneur Reynold for $530 million
in 1978 and built a fleet of 4,400-TEU container ships
78-year-old McLean founded another company
which still operates between Florida and Puerto Rico
Trailer Bridge annually awards the Malcom P
McLean Innovative Spirit Award in his honor
McLean’s shipping company was renamed Sea-Land Service
Malcolm McLean was far from being the “inventor” of container shipping
McLean realized that reducing the cost of shipping goods required more than just a metal crate; it required an entirely new system of handling cargo
and the work of his customers—had to change
This realization made his ideas significantly different from anyone else in the transportation industry
His insight ushered in changes so radical that even experts at the International Container Bureau
who had been trying to promote containers for years
One leader of the organization later confessed
“We didn’t realize at the time that there was a revolution going on in the United States.”
McLean is mentioned in Filippo Lubrano’s novel “Radici aerea” (Edizioni Leucotea)
in which a mystery shopper meets McLean’s son in Bangkok and discusses the social and economic impact of the innovation systematized by his father
the 40 million containers circulating in the world use the external side walls to identify ONLY the owner or ONLY the user
Just look around to realize “how much advertising space is NOT used on the external side walls of the maritime containers that transport the goods to their destination”
the external walls of the containers in the world
do NOT promote ANYTHING where it is needed

Home » Italian Navy FREMM frigate ITS Martinengo Test Launches ASTER 30 Missile
The event marked the fourth scheduled firing by a FREMM frigate
conducted using an instrumented telemetry missile (procured by the OCCAR-EA FSAF-PAAMS Programme Division)
managed by OCCAR according to the FREMM contract
was previously performed by the ITS Bergamini both in autonomous and integrated mode
This new success showcases the reliability of the Surface Anti Air Missile providing both Self Defence and Extended Self Defence (SAAM ESD) system
installed on board the Italian FREMM frigates
the outstanding capabilities of the SAAM ESD against missiles simulated by a Mirach 40 target
planned in a such complex scenario never verified by previous firings
proves the effective cooperation among PISQ
the OCCAR-EA FREMM and FSAF-PAAMS Programme Divisions and the Industries involved”
OCCAR (Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d’Armement / Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation) is an international organisation whose core-business is the through life management of cooperative defence equipment programmes
ITS Martinengo is the third of six Bergamini-class FREMM frigates (in “General Purpose” variant) of the Italian Navy
The vessel built by Fincantieri was launched in March 2017 and commissioned in April 2018
“General Purpose” FREMM frigates of the Italian Navy are fitted with 2x A50 Sylver Vertical Launching System (VLS) for a total of 16x ASTER 15 or ASTER 30 surface to air missiles by MBDA
The last two FREMM Frigates for the French Navy, known as FREMM DA
will also be fitted with the ASTER 30: They will feature 4x Sylver A50 VLS for a total of 32x MBDA ASTER 15 or ASTER 30
ASW variant FREMM Frigates Bretagne and Normandie (Aquitaine-class) can also deploy 16x ASTER 30 thanks to 2x Sylver A50 VLS
the missile is set to eventually be deployed aboard air defense destroyers of the UK (Type 45)
Studies for the integration of Aster 30 B1NT missiles aboard the Forbin-class (to provide them with Ballistic Missile Defence BMD capability) are provisioned in the 2019-2025 French military planning law
The Italian Navy is set to get this capability in 2024 with the delivery of its first PPA (Pattugliatore Polivalente d’Altura or Offshore Multipurpose Patrol Ship) vessel in the “Full” configuration

Home » Italian Navy Frigate Contributes to Operation AGENOR
According to a press statement released by the operation headquarters in the French naval base in Abu Dhabi
Commanding officer Roberto Carpinelli said:
“The integration of ITS Martinengo into EMASOH highlights the importance in operating in a multinational context through the centrality of European countries as an effective tool for developing the concept of collaborative security at sea
The operation represents a very significant moment as an expression of cohesion between all countries involved and it will show the high level of interoperability of the assets aimed to ensure freedom of navigation
reassure civilian shipping and the free flow of global commerce operating in full compliance with International Law,”
The ITS Martinengo embarks two SH-90 ASuW/ASW helicopters and personnel of the Navy Aviation 4th Helicopter Group from Grottaglie air station (near Taranto) and a San Marco Navy Brigade boarding team
The EMASOH initiative was launched by France in January 2020
based on a common political statement with Belgium
and more recently being supported by a ninth nation: Norway
The Italian Government approved the participation and deployment of national assets to the initiative last June with the reiteration by Italian Parliament last September of its international commitments for 2021
These are pursued to counter terrorism and stabilize the ‘Enlarged Mediterranean’ area extending outside the Mare Nostrum basin into the Atlantic Ocean down to the Gulf of Guinea
According to the documentation released to Italian Parliament
the European nations naval and airborne assets participation to EMASOH is aimed mainly at protecting national merchant shipping
strengthening cooperation with other initiatives in the area and contributing to the “maritime situational awareness” of the region’s naval and air space
These assets will also take the necessary measures to prevent and deter hostile acts against national merchant shipping
This is the first time Italy joins EMASOH in a military way, parallel to the political track. The Italian Navy frigate is expected to participate to the mission for three months. ITS Martinengo has relieved the French Navy Aquitaine-class FS Languedoc (D 653) frigate that has been deployed to AGENOR for over 4 months
the French frigate two crews conducted 15 crossings of the Strait of Hormuz (SoH)
monitoring the merchant shipping of the 9 participating countries
and 7 crossings with close monitoring of dedicated vessels
In this way contributing to the security and freedom of navigation
despite extreme weather conditions and COVID 19 constraints

Giulia Martinengo Marquet – one of Italy’s best riders – finds herself in the middle of one of the worst affected areas of the coronavirus Covid-19 outbreak: In northern Italy between Bergamo and Brescia
"The situation here is really critical,” Giulia tells World of Showjumping
“When everything exploded back in February
I was still in Spain at the Mediterranean Equestrian Tour in Oliva Nova
and all shows in Italy were being cancelled
we moved on to the Sunshine Tour," Giulia continues
the situation got out of hand in Spain as well and everything got called off
We had to rent a car and drive home; it was impossible for us to get flights back to Italy."
but I think that I have never before felt as lucky as I do right now," Giulia says
"We live in the countryside and in our stable we are living quite a normal life
the daily routine has not changed all that much
As I am a member of the national A-squad I can still ride
we are at the moment the only group in Italy allowed to do so. In such times
one acknowledges that having chosen this type of lifestyle really makes a difference
the neighbourhood community has really come together and organised everything so that food gets delivered to our homes – with a couple of phone calls we can get what we need
I feel truly lucky and privileged to lead a normal life amid all this when I know that close by people are locked in their apartments."
While the situation in Italy has gone from bad to worse
Giulia still manages to look for light at the end of the tunnel
"I also think there can be something positive coming out of this crisis
It seems to me that no matter what kind of life you lead or job you have
Even though I think I usually take a lot of time with my horses
I have time to follow the four-year-olds we have bred in Sgh Stables
Just to tidy up is so important; you put order in your mind and order around you
we are slowing down in everything we do and the pressure as well as the idea of a timeline has vanished
it is even more clear to me than before why we work with horses: Because we love what we do."
the IOC announced that the Olympic Games 2020 will be postponed – but that came as no surprise to Giulia
I tried to imagine how we could have had horses and riders ready without shows
Who could jump the Olympics after such a long break
The original timeline would not have been in compliance with the Olympic spirit
postponement was the only solution," the 41-year-old rider says
my plan was to enjoy some good shows and maybe do a few Nations Cups – which I really love," Giulia tells about her pre-corona goals
"The 2020-aim was to develop the nice group of eight-year-old horses that I have
I was lucky with my tours in the beginning of the year as my horses had five weeks of shows
they jumped in different arenas and proved that they are all brave
Even if a long break now may be a bit boring
Three months of rest would be possible to handle
but let's hope it will be less than that," she says
it is going to be what it is going to be – I am that kind of person
My aim now is to keep my horses fit and happy and ready to go when the moment comes

he has interviewed the fashion industry’s leading figures
While Spain’s Sergio Alvarez Moya already has voiced his opinions when it comes to the 2021 Europeans
Italy’s leading lady rider Giulia Martinengo Marquet now shares her view on the topic
“The more I think about having two major championships in the same year
I think I speak for most professional riders when I say that we do what we do every day because we have a dream – we are not in this only for the business
We train every single day to reach our goals
but this year the Covid-19 pandemic has eradicated most of them
we all still need goals to reach for – even if they might be a little far away,” Giulia says
the country can only send one individual jumping combination to the Olympics as they did not qualify with a team
good horse-and-rider combinations never even get the chance to go to a championship
Maybe 2021 could turn out to be a year where new combinations can show up and get a chance they deserve
championships are what makes the difference – also when it comes to sponsors and owners,” Giulia points out.
“We can’t exclude that the Olympics end up being postponed again – or even worse
if a decision was made now to cancel the European Championships in 2021
is that the level of the sport is so high as of today that to run two major championships in the same year it is indeed feasible and can only can be seen as a fantastic opportunity for both riders and owners,” Giulia says.
“The economic – and possible political – consequences are something I as a rider can’t fully appreciate
I don’t see any reason why we should not aim for both the Europeans and the Olympics in 2021. Surely
this might be different from discipline to discipline but for jumping we should support it the best way we can instead of accepting a ‘no go',” Giulia continues.
The European Championships is one of FEI’s own flagship events
together with the Nations Cup series and the World Cup series
and Giulia quickly points out an important link in this chain
which would be the case for several riders should the Europeans be cancelled
I can imagine it could be hard to fully motivate the athletes as well as the horse owners to take part in the Nations Cup events
There are normally so many other lucrative CSI shows to choose from
so I can easily imagine that many would make their priorities based on prize money instead,” she says
horse welfare can also not be used as an argument to cancel the Europeans
This is a matter of either good planning or careful sports career choices.”
The gym at Lambuth Memorial United Methodist Church on Campbell Street in Jackson looked like a fun assembly line
As music blared over the loudspeakers in the room
about 100 youth group members from six churches in the Jackson area sang along and had fun while dumping rice
soy protein and other measured dry substances into bags through funnels
Every so often the melody of the tunes would be interrupted by a loud noise from a gong and a reactive cheer
“That means they’ve assembled another thousand food packets,” said Matthew Barrick
youth director at Medina First United Methodist Church
“We’re trying to get 10,000 of these put together today.”
The effort was in conjunction with Rise Against Hunger
an international organization with a goal to try to eliminate world hunger by 2030
Simon Martinengo represents Rise Against Hunger in its Nashville office and helps coordinates events across the state like the one at Lambuth Memorial last week
Groups can have events in which Rise Against Hunger will supply the ingredients for the meals for preparation
and the host group simply needs to provide the people to put everything together
“We want to do what we can to eliminate world hunger in our lifetime
and we put a deadline of 2030 on that,” Martinengo said
“Twelve years might sound like plenty of time to do that
but when you’re talking about a goal of something like making sure world hunger is eradicated
12 years isn’t a lot of time.”
Barrick said some people affiliated with the youth groups of the Methodist churches around Jackson had been involved with Rise Against Hunger events elsewhere
and this seemed like a good cause to help in changing how they do things
we wanted to serve together instead of what we usually do
helping in smaller groups in various ways across the city,” Barrick said
about 100 kids working at different stations getting these bags put together
and we’re making progress in putting 10,000 bags together.”
The end result of the assembly line was a bag that had a full meal in it
and different things to provide a well-balanced meal
“Then we take the bags that are assembled and send them out to places in Africa
South America and Asia that are in need of food,” Martinengo said
“We have four ways that we try to eliminate hunger: through emergency relief
empowering communities and growing food.”
Efforts like packing meals at Lambuth Memorial help in emergency relief
“We wanted to do something that will have a far-reaching impact
far-reaching in space and area geographically
like the impact could be felt years down the road,” Barrick said
“And if we can be a very small part of an effort to eliminate world hunger
that’s something we’re glad to be a part of
“One thing we’ve talked about this week is making sure our faith is authentic
and you can’t have a true impact not being real
and begin to have an impact like that on those around them more than they did before this week.”

an Italian Navy frigate rescued the product tanker Torm Alexandra from a pirate attack in the Gulf of Guinea
the Alexandra was approached and boarded by pirates about 160 nm off the coast of Benin
Her crew sent a distress signal and retreated to the vessel's citadel
The frigate Martinengo received the signal and responded by dispatching her helicopter to the scene
When the helicopter aircrew arrived and fired warning shots
A Benin Navy patrol boat was dispatched to intercept the attackers.
According to maritime security consultancy Praesidium International
the Torm Alexandra's 21 crewmembers are safe.
The Torm Alexandra was one of two merchant vessels to encounter pirates in the Gulf of Guinea this weekend
the tanker Wesley was approached by a speedboat containing seven armed pirates at a position about 130 nm to the south of Escravos
and the master began evasive maneuvers while the crew mustered in the citadel
Wesley carried an armed security team on board
and when they fired warning shots the speedboat departed the area
The vessel and her crew were not harmed.
The Torm Alexandra and Wesley are the second and third tankers attacked in the Gulf of Guinea this month
pirates boarded the tanker Nefeli II at a position about 90 nautical miles to the south of Brass
The attackers destroyed some bridge equipment but did not abduct any members of the crew.
"With a further failed attempt it is highly likely that the perpetrators will increase in desperation in their attempts to secure their objective which remains most likely the kidnapping of crew for ransom," assessed security consultancy Dryad Global
"As such the risk profile for the region is to be considered critical at this time with incidents assessed as highly likely / expected within days."

Clouds Never Say Hello spreads over two floors of the historic building and presents an articulated selection of new works that take viewers on an immersive journey into the author’s imagination.Picco deals lightly with delicate themes such as death
often highlighting the contradictions of our society
and showing how life and the world are an immense visionary theater
the room whose walls have been completely covered with 18 thousand Savoy cookies
an intervention by the artist that changes the sensory perception of the space and at the same time marks the access to the exhibition’s core
A decompression room full of childhood reminiscences
implicit in the wall is in fact the reference to incommunicability and all those walls that still inhabit the world
are a recurring theme in Gabriele Picco’s work
Visible and present both in the history of art and in everyday life
at the same time so intangible and evanescent
they metaphorically represent the ambiguity and contradiction that reign in the imagination of the Brescian author
Two of the rooms of the exhibition are dedicated precisely to clouds
In one we find them on the roof racks of scale models of historical cars from the second half of the twentieth century
These are the cars that have become true icons
which follow the first work in this series entitled Cloud
which Picco made in 2005 with a real Fiat 500 as a permanent sculpture in the Madonie Park in Sicily
In the other room the viewer will encounter
what could be described as five small poems
Clouds of various colors carved in different marbles
a small stuffed bird of the same color as the rock
The exhibition will be accompanied by a full-bodied monographic volume published by SKIRA in which hundreds of works produced by the artist between 1998 and 2022 will be collected through the filter of specific thematic sections
a specific section will be dedicated in the form of a cahier to drawing
and the textual part will consist of an essay signed by curator Claudio Musso
a conversation between the artist and Davide Ferri
and was forced to close after only one month of opening
Now there are conditions to reopen the exhibition.Curated by Davide Dotti
organized by the Associazione Amici di Palazzo Martinengo under the patronage of the Province of Brescia
and in partnership with Fondazione Marcegaglia onlus
the exhibition presents more than 90 masterpieces by artists such as Titian
whose works have come to represent the personality
sensuality and the most subtle nuances of the female hemisphere
hairstyles and accessories typical of each era and geographical context
There is also no shortage of works by Artemisia Gentileschi
thanks to the collaboration with the Marcegaglia Onlus Foundation
the exhibition is enriched with room panels that delve into some topical issues such as inequality between men and women
The exhibition thus also aims to raise awareness among the public
about topics of great socio-cultural importance
the driving force behind the growth and development of the entire community
through solidarity and cooperation projects
200 thematic itineraries to visit the exhibition
with the aim of bringing young people closer and closer to the world of art and
raising their awareness of issues of great social importance related to the female hemisphere
the Friends of Palazzo Martinengo Association will donate 1 percent of ticket proceeds to AIRC Foundation for Cancer Research with the goal of supporting the best research for the prevention
on the occasion of the exhibition at Palazzo Martinengo
the Diocesan Museum of Brescia is organizing a small exhibition
to explore the theme of female depiction in painting with sacred subjects
With the ticket of Women in Art from Titian to Boldini
one can visit the museum and the exhibition set up in the spaces of the former convent of San Giuseppe free of charge
one of the leading international authorities on Titian and author of the catalog raisonné of the Cadore master’s works
wrote that “this is a high-quality variant of one of Titian’s most avidly sought-after compositions
The other autograph redactions were painted not only for his most important patrons
but also for other illustrious figures of his time
adviser to Emperor Charles V of Habsburg as well as viceroy of the kingdom of Naples
and the powerful Cardinal Alessandro Farnese
The vigorous fringed brushstrokes and dense color impasto
close to the completion of the version of the Penitent Magdalene painted for Philip II in 1561.” Adding to the Magdalene is a Pair of Standing Lovers
a leading exponent of the Viennese avant-garde
which anticipates the stylistic solutions of The Kiss and The Embrace of the Stoclet Frieze
two of the Austrian master’s best-known masterpieces
Drawing inspiration from sacred texts and hagiographic books
the artists fired canvases that are the object of centuries-old devotion
depicting the most famous saints of Christianity along with their own iconographic attribute: Magdalene with the jar of ointments; Catherine with the cogwheel; Barbara with the tower; Margaret with the dragon; Cecilia with musical instruments
Not forgetting biblical heroines such as Judith
whose tormented personal stories are recounted in the Old Testament
Classical literature and mythology have also provided artists with endless food for thought
as in the case of stories involving deities (Diana
Daphne) and illustrious women of the ancient world who
in order not to deliver herself alive into the hands of her arch-enemy Octavian and suffer public humiliation; Lucretia
who pierced her own chest with a dagger after being demeaned and raped by Sextus Tarquinus; and Sophonisba
who drank the poison sent to her by her husband Messinissa in order not to live a mortified existence as a slave of the Romans
Especially in the context of nineteenth-century painting
woman was captured in her everyday dimension
grappling with the chores of domestic life and work; in the role of an affectionate mother who lovingly cares for her children; but also in mischievous attitudes and in intimate situations to enhance her sensual charge
as evidenced by the masterpieces of Giovanni Boldini
“After an initial postponement,” says Roberta Bellino
president of the Associazione Amici di Palazzo Martinengo
“we decided by mutual agreement with the Fondazione Provincia di Brescia Eventi and the Province of Brescia to close the exhibition
with the promise to meet again when the situation looked more tranquil from a health standpoint
was getting a great response from the public
All the people who had purchased the admission ticket in advance will be able to use the coupon
simply by presenting it at the ticket office of Palazzo Martinengo.”
“The theme of women,” says curator Davide Dotti
“is so fascinating and engaging that artists
especially between the 16th and 19th centuries
have investigated it from every iconographic perspective
eternalizing the ’divine creatures’ in masterpieces that still fatally seduce our gaze
it is an opportunity to take an exciting journey full of surprises
enhanced by unpublished paintings recently discovered in prestigious private collections
and close encounters with famous women of the past
including the Brescian Francesca (Fanny) Lechi
portrayed in 1803 by the great Andrea Appiani in an extraordinary canvas that after more than twenty-five years since its last appearance returns to public view.”
First of the four new events of PTM Andata/Ritorno scheduled from mid-May to the end of the year
enriches the new eighteenth-century path of the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo
in particular the path dedicated to the painting of Giacomo Ceruti
The loan of Portrait of Carlo Emanuele Massa adds an important piece in the narration around the work of Ceruti of which the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo preserves the most significant corpus of works in the world: the most modern among the “painters of reality” – according to the happy definition of Roberto Longhi – links him to Moretto
Ceruti was also sought after and refined portraitist
with a production that returns his prolific network of contacts woven over the long career and his
ability to intercept the trends of European painting of the time
Following some of the most significant members of the aristocracy of the time
with a break in Tortona that the work of the Cavallini-Sgarbi Foundation allows to investigate with a new look
In the city of Piedmont Ceruti decorates the hall on the main floor of Palazzo Busseti and
he made the portrait of Carlo Emanuele Massa
presented to the public for the first time on this occasion at the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo in Brescia
Carlo Emanuele Massa was one of the most authoritative representatives of the Savoy government
trustee of King Carlo Emanuele III on the territory of the Piedmontese dominion: his portrait belongs to the mature phase of the painter
in which Ceruti is open to new requests of a client of international taste
with amazing results in the mimetic rendering of faces and surfaces
PTM Andata e Ritorno is the project of Fondazione Brescia Musei that transforms the “departures” linked to loan applications into “arrivals” of guest works: an opportunity to welcome in the rooms of the new Pinacoteca masterpieces that dialogue with the permanent collection
The project is a preview of the great exhibition that Fondazione Brescia Musei will dedicate to Giacomo Ceruti in 2023
in the year in which Brescia and Bergamo will be Italian Capitals of Culture
an event that more than 35 years after the exhibition hosted at the Museum of Santa Giulia
which placed the artist at the attention of the general public
emphasizes the quality of the Pitocchetto within European painting

Home » Sasha Martinengo pays tribute to ex-colleague and good friend Darren Scott
Sasha Martinengo has posted a touching tribute to his former radio and TV colleague
As reported by The South African website
issued a statement last Saturday regarding his latest health update
They made mention of a BackaBuddy campaign launched by Scott’s ex-wife Sarah-Kate Accetta
aimed at assisting him with the costs related to his ongoing cancer treatment
Accetta got in touch with The South African website on Sunday with a link to the BackaBuddy campaign
At the time of publishing the campaign has raised a little under R230 000
If you are in a position to donate, click HERE to do so
Martinengo took to social media on Wednesday to share how their paths crossed and how they became ‘very good mates’
It isn’t often that I share many personal posts but this is one is different and very close to me
I first met Darren Scott back when he was working for Capital Radio
He was by chance in Johannesburg broadcasting from a studio in Milpark just down the road from the SABC
I was working for Virgin Records at the time and Rick Astley (post his euro-pop time) had just released a beautiful record called Free
The first single was title “Cry for Help” and I went to deliver it to Darren to ask him to play it on his breakfast show
To say that he was friendly would be an overstatement
but he was doing a show and I’m sure he thought who is this punk interrupting me
Darren joined as the weekend breakfast show host
Prior to that Darren and I had bumped into each other on one other occasion
we found out that we had a lot in common and became very good mates
To make friends in the broadcasting world is extremely difficult and rare
I could write a book on the various complexities surrounding it but just believe me when I say it is rare and uncommon
Darren and I have managed to remain very good mates and we have worked together on various radio stations and of course at Supersport together
Our journeys have crossed paths more times than I can imagine but if he ever needed something
Darren has been instrumental in creating so many powerful projects to assist others
This was also the catalyst that created Hot Cares
Darren has always been the champion of causes to assist others
It is with sadness if you have not read but Darren is battling cancer right now
Mark fought and survives cancer to this day
Darren to me is the greatest broadcaster I know and have worked with
Below is a campaign to assist Darren through this difficult journey
In whatever capacity you know Darren I ask you sincerely to try and assist or at least share so we can get Darren healthy and fit again
https://www.backabuddy.co.za/campaign/just-plain-darren-needs-you
As reported by The South African website in late 2024, Johannesburg-based radio station HOT 102.7FM confirmed that Scott would be returning to host its afternoon drive show.
The Just Plain Drive Show saw a return to South African radio for Scott
who had previously been in the United States for the 18 months prior.
Scott is a household name in South African radio and television
including stints with the likes of Capital Radio
where he fronted the hugely-popular ‘Boots & All’ rugby show for many years
Scott explained how he has been living with a life-threatening skin cancer
he posted an almost unrecognisable photo alongside a more recent picture of him in hospital
“The one on the left is me just over a year ago
My weight had dropped to 78kg and I felt like I was close to death,” he posted
“The pic on the right is me in hospital this past weekend … finally getting a problem fixed after a rollercoaster year.”
he explained that the first melanoma had been diagnosed as far back as 1986 … “as a result of many hours on a cricket field without adequate protection”
“Since 1986 my body has been like a ‘pinball machine’ when it comes to this disease,” he shared
“Discounting the numerous very early stage melanomas (malignant moles in simplistic terms)
which have been removed without any follow up treatment necessary
Darren Scott went on to depict an agonising journey fighting not only the disease
but some adverse reactions to attempted treatments
one of which he suggests “made my own immune system turn on me
It hit me like a series of Mike Tyson blows to my gastro-intestinal region ….”
“I plummeted 15kg in two weeks and after being discharged from hospital with hordes of cortisone and an array of other medication
completely drained and battling to recover
“That came with far too regular bouts of dizziness
blackouts and a complete loss of energy as I battled to maintain my weight above 80kg (normal for me being around 90-95kg)
“This ‘attack’ on my system started in July of last year …
and I only started to feel somewhat human again by November!”
After another recent health setback that led to his “body shutting down” two months ago
Scott needed to have his gall bladder removed
“I finally feel human again after more than a year …
albeit less one gall bladder to go with missing lymph glands
a part of my lung and a section of my chin … and a whole new diet!” he described
“The good news is … I’m back at that place where all I’m fighting now is my weight … that’s to try and keep it down
as opposed to trying to keep it up!”
