2019It may be hard to believe for those who saw Roberto Clemente perform
but even the Great One needed help at times
In those moments he often called his older brother Justino “Matino” Clemente
and adviser for “Momen,” as family members called the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Hall of Fame right fielder
Matino was there to answer his younger brother’s calls even after Roberto became one of all-time greats
who was eight years older than his late brother
became accustomed to helping Roberto during their childhood in the San Anton neighborhood of Carolina
“We always helped him and took care of him because he was the youngest,” Matino said
There was more involved than just looking after the youngest sibling
Their father Melchor Clemente worked long hours providing for his family
Matino was the one who mastered the game and shared baseball with Roberto
Matino was a skilled ballplayer in his own right
Roberto would follow his brother around the field as a child and help carry equipment
As Roberto matured into a teenager Matino would see that his brother was developing the kind ability that could possibly take him to the major leagues
That’s when the instinct to teach and take care of his kid brother kicked in
“I was the one who advised him,” Matino said
“I told him what should he do or shouldn’t do
Matino answered the call in more ways than one
He joined the Army and saw combat as part of the 65th Infantry Regiment during the Korean War
The enlisted ranks of the 65th Infantry were comprised entirely of Puerto Ricans
It was a segregated unit much like the black Tuskegee Airmen
The Puerto Rican soldiers in the 65th dealt with discrimination even as they fought under the U.S
which combined Boricua (the Taino word for Puerto Rico) and buccaneers
Matino and other surviving Borinqueneers were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for their service in 2016
Time in the military exposed Matino to how race mattered in U.S
That experience enabled him to empathize when his brother when Roberto had his own encounters with Jim Crow segregation and racial discrimination while playing professionally in the United States
Matino loved to show off his baseball knowledge and help Roberto out
Newspaper clippings sent by Roberto were the main way the Clemente parents and siblings stayed informed about his performance with the Pirates
Those clippings are now treasured possessions for Matino Clemente’s family
The Clemente family also communicated through letters and the occasional phone calls during the baseball season
Phone calls were rare because it was quite expensive to call Puerto Rico in those days
the family knew he had things he wanted to share
whether he wanted to celebrate a recent success or express his frustrations
Matino remembers his brother once called from Pittsburgh upset about a batch of new bats
“The bats we bought do not work; they’re all breaking,” a frustrated Roberto told Matino
The family conferred to determine how to help Roberto
Melchor instructed Matino to travel to Pittsburgh and assist Roberto in figuring out the problem with the bats
Matino watched his brother’s approach at the plate
He took note of how he crowded the plate and how Cubs pitchers were trying to pitch to him
The car ride back to Roberto’s place after the game was quiet
He was still upset that the new bats were still breaking
Roberto said: “Did you see what I told you
But Matino had come up with his own diagnosis
“What doesn’t work is your position [in the box]
… Back away from the home plate,” he told Roberto
you’re going to walk because it’s going to be an inside ball.”
Roberto connected for three extra-base hits—a double
Those are the moments that Matino still cherishes
While most of us remember Roberto Clemente as the Great One
he forever remains “Momen,” the kid brother to Matino

A global study involving McMaster University researchers has trialled a potential new treatment that could be a game-changer for people living with hemophilia A
Co-principal investigator Davide Matino said once-weekly injections of efanesoctocog alfa can prevent bleeding and promote near-normal activity by the clotting agent factor VIII
crucial for stopping the prolonged bleeding caused by hemophilia A
People who took efanesoctocog alfa also enjoyed improved joint function
Matino said efanesoctocog alpha works by separating factor VIII from its associated protein carrier
This means people with hemophilia A only need once-weekly instead of thrice-weekly injections
Researchers published their findings in The New England Journal of Medicine
patients with hemophilia A are free to live the lives that they want as they feel safe
protected and many of them tell me they don’t feel the daily joint pain they used to have
but this treatment really is the next best thing,” said Matino
an assistant professor of the Department of Medicine
“With only one injection for an entire week
people with hemophilia A will enjoy normal or near-normal levels of factor VIII
yet obtaining a lower level of protection,” he said
“The treatments for hemophilia A have improved more in the last decade than ever before
Now we have gene therapies and editing in the pipeline
monoclonal antibody treatments and cell-based therapies.”
found that 133 hemophilia patients treated weekly for a year improved their outcomes and quality of life compared to their previous treatment
Matino and fellow McMaster study author Alfonso Iorio said that McMaster was the only centre enrolling adult patients in Canada
“The research infrastructure and leadership we built at McMaster as a leader for the Canadian hemophilia data collection network allowed us to attract international clinical studies on innovative treatments
such as the efanesoctocog alfa trial and gene therapy,” said Alfonso Iorio
professor and director of McMaster’s hemophilia clinic
Hemophilia A is a rare bleeding disorder caused by a mutation in the gene encoding factor VIII
The condition causes repetitive bleeding into joints beginning in early childhood and can be life-threatening
Severe hemophilia A is when a person’s factor VIII level is less than one per cent of normal
“The patients we enrolled in this study have been using efanesoctocog alfa for several years and we are delighted that McMaster managed to offer them this treatment and thus the opportunity to enjoy a vastly better quality of life,” said Iorio
External funding for the study on efanesoctocog alpha was provided by Sanofi

Registered in England No. 894646. Registered office: 1 London Bridge Street, SE1 9GF.
Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Rodolfo Azurin Jr. on Monday denied recent reports that there is alleged cover-up in the arrest of a police sergeant who yielded 990 kilograms of shabu worth P6.7 billion.
Azurin, in a press conference in Camp Crame, said he ordered the creation of the Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) 990 upon the recommendation of former PNP-Drug Enforcement Group (PDEG) chief Brig. Gen. Narciso Domingo, whose men later pilfered some 42 kilos from the bulk of shabu in the lending office owned by Master Sgt. Rodolfo Mayo where the 990 kilos were confiscated.
“The move is an indication of my strong resolve to get to the bottom of these illegal drug activities, that I am serious about unmasking the members of the syndicate — whether in the government or crime group. Contrary to what many of our critics say, let me also categorically say that there was no attempt to cover-up or to exculpate PMSgt Rodolfo Mayo from his involvement in the illegal drug operations,” Azurin said.
He admitted he was aware of and approved the tactical plan to use Mayo in order to get bigger fishes involved in the illegal drugs trade.
He also maintained that there was never a plan to set Mayo free and not charge him over the recovery of illegal drugs in his possession.
Asked why he just spoke now after a week that the issue was disclosed by Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos, the PNP chief said, “I have to give ‘yung mga ibang naakusahan their time to also explain their side. Kaya nga inuna natin si Domingo (I have to give the other accused chance to also explain their side. That’s why we put Domingo first) because he also has something to say.”
Azurin also vouched for Domingo’s credibility and integrity as a police officer saying that he is “certain” that he has no involvement in the illegal drugs trade or any interest in it.
“I placed Gen. Domingo in PDEG because during the time I was assigned to DRPM [Directorate for Personnel and Records Management], I knew the official and I am certain that Gen. Domingo has no involvement in drugs. He is not tainted with that, so I have to put someone who is not tainted there because I do not know the people there in PDEG),” he explained.
Abalos, meanwhile, said that all bases must be covered to ensure that the cases against the police officers involved in the 990 kilos shabu haul seized in Oct. 2022 will not be dismissed.
In a press briefing on Sunday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum, Abalos pointed out that the personalities shown in the CCTV footage have a lot of explaining to do to determine what transpired in the PHP6.7 billion worth of shabu seized from Mayo on Oct. 2022 in Manila.
He noted that having an air-tight case against the said cops is ‘napakaimportante (very important)’, that is why an intense investigation is being conducted.
Meanwhile, seven days before his retirement, Azurin said he wants his replacement to be tougher and level-headed than him.
“As I hang my police uniform seven days from now, I hold my head high knowing that I have served the country, and the 228,000-strong PNP well — with my integrity and credibility intact, that I will conclude my tour of duty, knowing fully well I have done my job to my people, my country and our almighty,” Azurin added, who is a member of the Philippine Military Academy “Makatao” Class of 1989. He was appointed by Marcos as the country’s 28th top cop in August last year.
Among the possible contenders for PNP chief are the three top officers of the command group — deputy chief for administration Lt. Gen. Rhodel Sermonia, deputy chief for operations Maj. Gen. Jonnel Estomo and Lt. Gen. Michael John Dubria, chief of the directorial staff.
Other contenders are Directorate for Intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Benjamin Acorda, Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management chief Maj. Gen. Eliseo Cruz; Criminal Investigation and Detection Group chief Brig. Gen. Romeo Caramat Jr. and National Capital Region Police Office head Maj. Gen. Edgar Alan Okubo
Azurin is set to retire upon reaching the mandatory age of 56 on April 24. He has been in the police service for over 38 years, and the first PNP chief of the Marcos administration. (PNA)

the market for mobile homes on wheels has grown and grown
it's not hard to see why they mean big business here
with the added benefit of being your very own miniature home and holiday destination
cookers and gazebos can be fitted as standard or as optional extras
which makes them a very attractive proposition for those wanting to travel around Europe or in Ireland
After the original camper van was launched
there have been many iterations and attempts by other car manufacturers over the years and now there are examples out there that are like mini-hotels on wheels
Here is our list of some of the very best camper vans currently on sale
Picture: MercedesThe Mercedes Marco Polo is essentially a V-Class decked out to be your own little home from home
The driving experience feels more like a car than a van and the dashboard is taken straight from the normal V-Class meaning that there is a nice blend of soft-touch materials and leather
the Marco Polo comes with plenty of camping equipment and features that will fit your holiday requirements such as two beds
cupboard style draws and an optional side awning
the Marco Polo is rather expensive to buy starting at €61,250
while the interior may be packed full of storage features
it's still not as practical as rivals from Volkswagen
Picture: VolkswagenThe California is commonly seen as the benchmark when it comes to camper vans
There is a larger variant called the Grand California
but with a rather hefty starting price of €97,225 — the smaller version looks like a better deal
The standard California is based on the very popular Transporter van which means you get all the Volkswagen's familiar switchgear and lofty driving position
the California has rotating and swivel passenger seats that can be adjusted 180 degrees
you get a fold-out kitchen with a single gas hob
Higher specced Coast and Ocean models come with all the camping equipment you'll ever need including both getting full kitchens with twin gas hobs
a sink with fresh and waste water tanks and a fridge
The top-of-the-line Ocean model gets an electric roof that is operated with a control panel
and a fold-out awning is an option on the base Beach model
A 230V socket which allows you to hook up to the mains comes as standard with all California models
Picture: FordThe Ford Transit is a motoring success itself and now you can have one for your camping trip away
The Transit Custom Nugget (approx €76,500) may have an odd name but
behind the rather anonymous exterior lies a bench seat that can fold flat to make a double bed and a roof that tilts up to reveal another double bed
the roof unlike the California and Marco Polo is manually operated
a sink and a fridge and there are plenty of cupboards and drawers to stow things away
all of this is spoiled by the Transit's driving experience which gives a harsh ride and numb handling
but the Mercedes Marco Polo does offer a sharper driving experience
Picture: VolkswagenThe baby sibling compared to the more mature California and larger Grand California is the Caddy California
The Caddy California starts from €45,080 which sounds like great value for money
It's also available with petrol or diesel power and unlike the rest on our list
feels more like a car to drive thanks to its lower centre of gravity and ride height
there is a logically laid out dashboard with decent-quality materials used throughout
drop the second row of seats and you'll find lurking beneath them a fold-out bed big enough for a pair of two adults to sleep in as well as a mini-kitchen - which is located in the boot
there is a single-burner cooker with an integrated gas bottle and there is even a custom made bag designed to carry two fold-out chairs and a table
Picture: ToyotaThe Toyota Proace Matino is based on the Proace Verso minivan
with the added benefit of side graphics and an extending roof for a bed
The Matino's interior layout is simple and easy to use
if not a little cheap feeling to the touch
The rear bench seats can slide and adjust to make a double bed and you get the option of a secondary bed by raising the roof
unlike the Mercedes Marco Polo and Volkswagen California
everything in the Matino is operated manually instead of electrically
There is a kitchen with twin gas hobs and a sink with fresh and waste water tanks
A fridge is also present and located in one of the larger cupboards you get a toilet cassette — but unfortunately does take up a lot of space
From as little as €1 a week with our digital introductory offer
