Bagaladi is located at the foot of Mount San'Angelo
where the historic Iacopino Oil Mill represents one of the first mills in Calabria to use water as a motive power
Third stop on the ‘’Englishman's Path‘’ is Amendolea
an ancient village of Greek origin located on the river of the same name
The ruins of the village include those of the ancient Ruffo Castle
Located in the north-western sector of a long and impervious rocky ridge
between the Amendolea and Condofuri torrents
it is one with the monumental ruins of the village
including those of a small Byzantine church where the ancient Greek Orthodox rite is practised
The fourth stop along the ‘’Englishman's Path‘’ takes us straight to the ‘’ghost village‘’ of Gallicianò, defined as the Acropolis of Magna Graecia in Calabria, since it is the only village still entirely Hellenic, that is, speaking the ancient Greek of Calabria. Thanks to its isolation, it has kept its cultural, craft
musical and choreographic traditions intact
Many elements make the atmosphere full of charm
such as the Fountain of Love (Cannalo tis Agapi) and the Church of Our Lady of Greece (Panaghìa tis Ellada)
where the Greek Orthodox rite is practised
The stop in Bova, among Italy's Most Beautiful Villages along the ‘’Englishman's Path‘’
preserves the ancient Greekness of Calabria through rituals
The historic centre clings to a striking natural cliff
at the foot of the Aspromonte National Park
Access to the village was through two turreted gates and climbing up the alleyways
on which the main buildings still stand today: the Cathedral
the Bishop's Palace and the other noble palaces
all the way to the ruins of the Norman Castle
Other jewels to admire in Bova are the Church of San Leo
with its Chapel of Relics; the Churches of the Carmine and the Immaculate Conception and the details sculpted on the façades of the numerous noble palaces
the work of local stonemasons (Mesiani-Mazzacuva Palace
Nesci Sant'Agata Palace and Tuscano Palace
Two other gems not to be missed are the Path of Rural Civilisation
an open-air museum winding its way through the alleyways
and the ‘’Gherard Rohlfs‘’ Museum of the Greek-Calabra Language
named after the German philologist who first took an interest in the recovery of this original local idiom
Palizzi boasts the ancient historic centre of Palizzi Superiore
where the ‘’Englishman's Path‘’ walking route passes
The historical centre rises around the fortress of the ancient Palizzi Castle (13th century)
an imposing building fortified into the living rock
of which today remain the remains of the surrounding walls with mighty bastions and gun ports
as well as the two towers (cylindrical and angular)
Just outside the town is the small hamlet of Pietrapennata
with the ancient Monastery of Alica and the remains of the Monastery of Sant'Ippolito
with the village clinging to the sinuous forms of the Giambatore Rock
the loop trail climbs to the edge of the Aspromonte National Park and includes a visit to the Church of Santa Maria dei Tridetti

the Carabinieri also found 200 grams of TNT with a trigger and a homemade explosive device
The Carabinieri of the Melito Porto Salvo company
have carried out an important operation against the illegal possession of weapons and drug trafficking
following careful patrolling and monitoring
the Carabinieri discovered a large arsenal and a significant quantity of cocaine ready to be released into the drug dealing areas
The searches focused on two separate plots of land: one abandoned and without fences
who were subsequently reported at large for illegal possession of weapons and narcotics
The operation led to the discovery of war weapons
ammunition and narcotics meticulously hidden in conditions that preserved their operational effectiveness
the following were seized: an AK-47 Kalashnikov automatic rifle with a stamped serial number
complete with two empty magazines; three pistols
two of which with stamped serial numbers; over 500 cartridges of various calibers
including some war cartridges; approximately 500 grams of pure cocaine
with an estimated value of approximately 150.000 euros; two precision scales used to divide the drug into doses
Much of the material was hidden in water pipes and disused wooden structures similar to chicken coops
carefully wrapped in cellophane bags and placed in cases
demonstrating a sophisticated concealment system designed to evade police checks
the Carabinieri also found 200 grams of TNT with a trigger and a homemade “paper bomb” device weighing 1,2 kilos
both hidden inside an iron pipe buried under soil and gravel
Among the material seized in this area were also three pistols
a 20-gauge over-and-under shotgun and 165 other cartridges of various calibers
The explosive material and the homemade device were detonated on site by the anti-sabotage bomb disposal experts of the Reggio Calabria Provincial Command
The entire arsenal and the narcotics were placed under criminal seizure and made available to the Judicial Authority to allow ballistic and technical-scientific investigations
checks will be carried out to establish their possible provenance from criminal episodes or thefts

On Friday 17 January 2025 and Saturday 18 January 2025
a rapidly developing Afro-Mediterranean cyclone named Gabri swept across the southern regions of Italy
The storm continued to affect the northern regions of the country
The weather is predicted to be over in a couple of days
based on data from the Sicilian Agrometeorological Information Service (Sias)
"The Mediterranean storm Gabri will certainly enter the list of the most important weather phenomena of recent years for the region
Suffice it to say that to find a rainier day than Friday 17 January 2025
one would have to go back to 25 March 2020
A first survey carried out on the production of fruit and vegetables in almost all the provinces of Sicily
with more significant damage in the southeastern part of the island
and roads were blocked by landslides and/or fallen trees
According to Coldiretti Calabria's monitoring
and the heavy rains have caused considerable damage to greenhouse structures and production
jeopardizing the horticultural season in the Ionian strip of Reggio Calabria
particularly in the areas of Melito Porto Salvo and Marina di San Lorenzo
"The violent gusts of wind that hit Sicily and Calabria also left their mark on our company
The courgettes were just about to start their production cycle and
We are a company founded about four years ago
and once again it is a race against time to restore the cover and ensure that production losses are not too severe," says Domenico Falcone
owns Società Agricola Cladì in Marina di San Lorenzo
a young company that has specialized in greenhouse vegetable production during the winter months for three generations
Even the tomatoes were not spared at harvest time
the fruit-bearing plants are quite damaged (see video below) and the covers are completely destroyed," says Falcone
a tomato greenhouse transplanted on 20 October
which was in the growing and setting phase
The Corigliano-Rossano area in the region of Calabria is also facing an emergency situation after heavy rains
"The bad weather has caused the collapse of an embankment in the Citrea
where some residents have complained of flooding that has invaded homes and land
The situation is also critical in the Calabrian Contrada Fellino locality
where the water has submerged numerous crops
causing extensive damage to agricultural production."
A fruit and vegetable cooperative in Corigliano-Rossano reports that "There is a lot of water
with airplanes diverted and trains stopped
a Ryanair airplane to Reggio Calabria was diverted to Brindisi (Apulia) after trying to land in Lamezia Terme (Calabria)
Difficulties also occurred for the train circulation on the Paola-Sapri line
which serves the stations of the Cosenza-Tyrrhenian Coast
there were interruptions due to obstacles at several points along the line
SardiniaDespite some damage in the province of Nuoro due to fallen trees and the overflowing of two watercourses in the Sassari area
in the eastern part between Gallura and Nuoro
the effects of the storm Gabri in Sardinia concern rainfall levels that were unthinkable until a few days ago
water is even being released into the sea at a rate of more than 200 cubic meters per second
the lamination alarm phase was activated after the water level reached its maximum
In accordance with the Civil Protection Plan
the S'Adu e Mesu and Sas Luasa crossings were closed

The first 51 doctors of the Cuban brigade providing health care in the southern Italian region of Calabria
today celebrate one year since the beginning of this mission
highlighted in statements to the Cuban press that the fifty specialists
who were joined by another 120 who arrived on August 4
earned the respect and gratitude of the people
during an event in tribute to the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution
the political and health authorities of Calabria recognized the work carried out by those health specialists upon arrival
highlighted on that occasion the performance of the Cuban health brigade in the hospitals of Polistena
which led to an improvement in health indicators in that area of the country
The 51 doctors who arrived in Calabria in 2022
cover nine specialties and all have extensive professional experience
as most of them provided their services in various nations around the world
This Cuban solidarity healthcare assistance in Italy is a continuation of that provided in 2020 by brigades of the Henry Reeve Medical Contingent in the northern cities of Crema and Turin
during the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic
The recent pressure from the US government on Italy against the hiring of Cuban doctors in Rome
when trying to apply the economic blockade to the island extraterritorially
the Italy-Cuba Friendship Association also indicates that it is an “absurd interference by the United States in the internal affairs of this sovereign nation
by asking for explanations on this issue from the Italian health authorities”
as revealed by the newspaper Corriere della Sera
the US embassy in Rome demanded Italy’s Ministry of Health to clarify “the procedures for hiring fixed-term professionals and their remuneration” in Calabria
51 Cuban health specialists arrived in Calabria
who provide services in hospitals in the towns of Locri
stressed that “we are happy for the opportunity to have highly specialized doctors.” Occhiuto pointed out that Calabria seeks to guarantee all the tools at its disposal for the care of citizens
in the face of the existing health emergency in that area of the country
The assistance of Cuban doctors is “a concrete way to give immediate responses to the needs of citizens
to guarantee operational health facilities throughout the region and functioning hospitals,” said the Calabrian politician
sued the European Parliament to protect the countries of the region against the extraterritorial application of the “blockade imposed by the world’s leading power on a small country in the Third World”

Cunego returns to one-day action in San Sebastian
Cunego and Saronni summoned by Italian anti-doping investigators
Seeing is believing for Cunego at 2012 Giro d'Italia
Gallery: Nibali and Cunego celebrate end of 2011 season
Fresh from a team training camp in San Vincenzo
Cunego admitted that he was keen to return to competitive action as he begins his build-up towards the Ardennes classics
“I want to race and rediscover the sensations that only a race can offer you,” Cunego said
The two-day race kicks off on Saturday with a stage from Melito Porto Salvo to Chiaravalle
and concludes the following day at Piazza Italia in Reggio Calabria
As was the case in last year’s three-stage event
Cunego expects the sprinters to be to the fore this weekend
“The characteristics of the route won’t allow me to get a result
but it will give me the chance to ride for two days at race rhythm
which is exactly what I need,” Cunego said
While the southern tip of Italy should avoid the brunt of the wintry conditions that have struck much of Europe in the past week or so
Cunego noted that the weather might have an impact on the race
“The race could be made more difficult by the bad weather,” he warned
“The forecast is that the weather will deteriorate further
but let’s hope the temperature doesn’t drop too much.”
Cunego had initially been slated to head on to ride the Giro della Sardegna later in February
but has yet to confirm what race – if any – he will add to his programme following the recent cancellation of the event
The opening part of his season will be built around preparing for the Ardennes classics
and Cunego has also confirmed that he will forgo Tirreno-Adriatico in favour of Paris-Nice
The Sunday TimesWhen Jo Kibble boarded the 07.01 Eurostar from London St Pancras on Wednesday last week he had only a rough idea where he’d end up
To see how far he could get from St Pancras in 24 hours using only the “iron road”
“Many people on Twitter thought I’d be heading east,” he says
I worked out that you could reach the Hungarian/Romanian border in the time I had.”
what he soon realised was that the far south of Italy was much further away — and benefits from more high-speed routes
He stuck a pin in the toe of the country and set about working out a route
The route would take him across the Channel
through Switzerland and then all the way down Italy
Kibble realised a “dog leg” via Strasbourg would be the fastest way to Switzerland
Basel SBB station in SwitzerlandALAMY“Taking the direct train from Paris to Switzerland would have meant hanging around for an hour or so in Paris
which under normal circumstances would be perfectly nice,” he says
“But when up against the clock it was definitely worth keeping moving.”
The adventure was born of Kibble’s challenge to himself last year to see how far he could get by bus from London in 24 hours
339.44km from Charing Cross as the crow flies
caught the attention of hundreds of thousands of users
who described the series of tweets as one of the “loveliest threads ever to appear on Twitter”
This time Kibble charted his more glamorous voyage
attracting hundreds of thousands of likes and comments from an avid group of supporters
“I realised quickly that an awful lot of people with Covid
“The number of comments also proved just how much pent-up wanderlust there is at the moment
after two years of people being denied it.”
A countryside view from a Swiss trainGETTY IMAGESBesides pleasing train enthusiasts
Kibble was surprised by the number of Americans and Australians messaging him in awe and saying
“I wish our continents had such a level of public transport so we could do the same.”
which allows unlimited train travel in Europe on a set number of days
“I thought it was the perfect time for the trip,” he says
“I’d also been starved of travel during the pandemic
which brings back so many memories from my time as a student
where the authorities were operating a “full customs and Covid border” that hadn’t been factored into the timetable
A high-speed train in SwitzerlandGETTY IMAGESIt was unsurprisingly the celebrated Swiss trains that impressed the most
“They’re new trains with lovely restaurant cars serving very good food
And most importantly they have big windows that are kept clean.”
It was with “incredibly good fortune” that Kibble made all the connections and
after an interrupted night’s sleep punctuated by a Mediterranean storm
Here he decided against using Europe’s last train-ferry
“Being shunted on and off a ferry and sailing slowly across the Straits of Messina would have been inefficient time use when I was travelling against the clock
My 24 hours would have been up by the time we got to the other side.”
Kibble boarded his eighth and penultimate train to Melito di Porto Salvo
southern ItalyALAMYTurning the corner — from the Tyrrhenian coast to the Ionian — Kibble managed
to get just a little further from St Pancras
six minutes behind schedule but with 45 seconds to spare
“I’m pretty certain this is the very furthest you can get
If I’d done it just one day later I’d have failed at the first hurdle because the 7am Eurostar was delayed by 45 minutes

For author Tim Parks there is joy to be had on local trains in the sultry south
where the pace of life is as leisurely and bewitching as the narrow-gauge railways
Suppose you have some summer days to spare
Not worrying too much about timetables (no one else will)
Just accepting the sun-struck languor of the hills and beaches

You have a small backpack with two or three T-shirts
What we’re trying to do is divest ourselves of our ordinary obsession with organisation and control
Italy’s southern railways are peculiarly conducive to this
Tell yourself before starting: I will never complain about a train being late
I will be steady and slow as sunshine on a stuccoed wall
you could make your way by rail and ferry to Palermo and start with Sicily (the Milan-Palermo train actually boards the ferry)

To the south of the island there is the marvellous 2km-long tunnel that climbs in a spiral from Modica on the coast to spectacular Ragusa

And of course there’s the wonderful ride up the east coast from Syracuse to Messina
where Sicilian writer Giovanni Verga set so many of his short stories
So here’s an easier solution. Instead of attempting Sicily, take the line that snakes round the bottom of Italy’s boot, all the way from Reggio Calabria on the western toe (linked by trains to Milan) to Taranto on the eastern heel. That’s about 500km of single-track railway. As long as you keep the sparkling sea to your right and thirsty vegetation to your left, you can’t go wrong.

has just published A Long Walk - Journeys in Calabria
The book features an account of more than 40 long treks in the region in search of its landscapes
Fellow environmentalist Joseph Agius interviewed him
You say in this book that you were already married with young children when you went on the first of your many treks in Calabria
what set off this long love affair with the region
The trigger was provided by three stints of voluntary work (summer 1967
1969) organised by a group called Voluntary Service Overseas (Malta) set up by Tony Macelli and the late Fr Peter Serracino Inglott
We worked with gypsies in the suburbs of Reggio Calabria and in Melito di Porto Salvo
At the time of the first solo journey in the summer of 1970
wife and two children) were at the end of a two-year stay at Zermatt in Switzerland
where I had been working at a high altitude solar observatory run by the University of Oxford
Civita Ponte del Diavolo and Gole del Raganello
Would I be right in saying that this book began as a diary
The book is essentially an account of extensive travels in Calabria
A ‘model’ that may well have exerted considerable influence could be Eric Newby’s A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush
published in the 1970s but read in the middle 1990s
after the same author’s better known Love and War in the Apennines
that starts in Msida creek where Newby boarded a submarine taking his party of “commandos” to Sicily on a sabotage mission designed to help the Santa Marija convoy
The original “diary” had a background: a compilation of some 250 typewritten pages of social
economic and geographical data on the Calabria of the 1970s
put together before many journeys had actually happened
The network of “journeys” carried some reflection of that background writing
To those hurriedly leafing through it this book might give the impression that it is meant for travellers and trekkers
misadventures and encounters yet more interesting
But what kind of audience did you have in mind when writing this account
people and culture of an area of Italy which
has remained comparatively unknown. Clearly Calabria has much to offer: spectacular sea and landscapes
a rich history and culture in an essentially Mediterranean setting
Thus the book can serve as introduction for readers with a wide range of interests
including academic ones related to archaeology
Two accounts of journeys in Calabria well known locally are those by Edward Lear and Norman Douglas
In what way is your book different from these
apart from the fact that it is a much more recent account
Edward Lear and Norman Douglas had rather specific interests as is well known
made a brief passage through Calabria with interest mainly in “sketching” town and landscapes; his contacts were mainly local notabili
to whom he had been given letters of introduction by the chief functionary in Reggio
Douglas recorded more than one passage in Old Calabria; a man of wide interests and erudition in areas which ranged from the historical to the literary
As well as of prejudices which sometimes cut him off from contemporary and historical realities
he gives very limited attention to the protracted Byzantine presence in Calabria
while acknowledging debts to both Lear and Douglas I tried to explore other avenues as well
In this respect I confess to succumbing often to a desire to set to rights some of Douglas’s “transgressions”
considering Douglas’s formidable gifts
physical and mental effort did this 45-year saga involve
Investment in time on the ground must amount to well over a year of continuous stay
But one must reckon that with the advent of the World Wide Net one can keep both an ‘information’ presence and quick contact with people in Calabria while being physically far away
While acknowledging debts to both Lear and Douglas I tried to explore other avenues as well
And use of the Net has had another effect: that of decreasing justified resentment at long absences from home and
days out of contact in circumstances that to the “uninitiated” appear to be
The advent of the mobile phone has improved the level of communication
heavily forested country where ordinary mobiles do not work
The interplay of the mental and the physical can be clearly seen in the way one faces a sharp rise at the end of a long day. You feel you need a rest before starting up; but if that rest is more than a few minutes long
So to the mental effort required to resume movement is added physical pain
A short stop will offer small physical relief but will require only mental effort to re-start
Switching to a slow plod and not stopping is best of all
heat and dehydration are the worst enemies
The best use of water against the direct effects of high ambient temperatures
is to rinse head and neck on arriving at a source
then treat a large bandana kerchief in the same manner
The relief afforded by wet shirt and bandana if fairly brief
is positively heavenly. For drinking: forest streams and the public water
found in every village are the best sources
In winter mere cold is usually no problem as walking with several layers under a windproof jacket and with padded trousers keeps a good body temperature; but sleeping out under tent or in huts calls for a good sleeping bag as well as a small gas stove
Add to that modern protection against heavy rain
and main rucksack weight starts touching 25 kg.; more if one is carrying a tent
That does place some restriction on the length of winter walks especially if deep snow or ice are present
This was indeed a long journey and an exhausting one but I felt that without the help given spontaneously by the Calabresi – lifts
and the relationship you built with them - this would have been a different story
How important was their help in this venture
A somewhat tricky question to answer truthfully without being or seeming to be ungrateful and unappreciative of help received
The fact is that no trip was planned without a strong element of self-sufficiency worked into it
It would have been foolish to do otherwise given that practically all offers of “help” came from chance encounters
But help is not any the less welcome and heart-warming for being unlooked-for
And in this respect there was little to choose between older and younger generations
particularly out in the countryside away from large towns
my experience of Calabria would have been that much poorer
Over these 45 years the social and physical landscape will have obviously changed
The 'ndràngheta too (Mafia calabrese) figures quite often in your book
Do you feel that the Calabresi in general have shaken off or at least loosened the grip of the 'ndràngheta
As far as the physical landscape is concerned there is a clear answer on ‘improvement’
there have been serious episodes of landslip and erosion
persistent efforts at afforestation and forestry control have managed to keep ahead of natural and pyromaniac destruction
certainly on the Sila but also in Aspromonte
around which lie the dominant 'ndràngheta citadels
But the great leap forward has been the establishment of the most extensive Italian national park: Il Parco Nazionale del Pollino straddles the Calabria-Basilicata border
with a spur coming down the west coast as far south as Belvedere Marittimo
Social landscapes offer a more uncertain picture
the former isolation of Calabria has been broken
of Calabresi out of the region has not been stemmed
Despite the onslaught by the various law enforcement bodies working with an improved legal arsenal
the grip of the 'ndràngheta does not look like being broken just yet
Yet there is one brand-new aspect of social change which deserves mention: the post-2000 activities of the town councils of Caulonia and especially Riace
These two places have become beacons of humanity in the reception of immigrants
under a scorching sun or in bitter cold and snow
and very often with no sure place to sleep at the end of the day
Had the writing of this book become a sort of mission you had to see through
or did every trek provide some great satisfaction
If anything the drive came from a desire to publicise the hardships that over the centuries the Calabresi had to put up with
an effort to redress the “picture” of Il Bel Paese we have formed by more orthodox methods
That is not to say that individual treks were not “satisfying” but to suggest that much of the “satisfaction” came from finding out what made Calabresi tick at work
Such a demanding search requires probing the links between topography and climate which have had such a marked effect on the local character
And then gaining some understanding of how the political and religious masters of the place have added their quotas of social pressures
Sounding trumpets and “Gothick” Castles
You say that you often spent the last hours of daylight reading
Books pose a particular problem in trekking: they are heavy
There is a necessary minimum of “paperweight” that needs to be carried: maps
trekking manuals and books acquired en route
novels were restricted to Camilleri and Sciascia and one or two Corrado Alvaro. Recent works about Calabria and southern Italy include those by Nicola Gratteri (Fratelli di Sangue)
Hagiography was represented by “Lives” of Francesco di Paola and Nilo of Rossano; books on ecology and environment
And last but not least (and repeatedly) Tolkien’s The Hobbit and individual volumes of The Lord of the Rings
both books involving long “treks”
It is a little difficult to disentangle neatly vivid memories of places
people and events. Take the particular case of the start of the last day of the donkey journey
After retreating from the extremely dangerous situation I had blundered into the previous evening (but not having the time to relate that here I leave it to the book)
I had arrived at a point very appropriately called Puntone Vividdu
It provided brilliant panorama of the southern flank of Aspromonte - a line-of-sight down into the course of the fiumara Amendolea with the cluster of houses of Roghudi on the crown of a hill far below and the brilliant white twists of the river bed
A memorable view indeed and the setting for a memorable encounter
Up the very narrow unfenced path coming up from Ghorio di Roghudi
with a near-vertical drop of 200 metres to the first houses
preceded by a young woman riding a donkey side saddle
I nudged my donkey up the slope on the inside of the path; but on meeting
the woman’s donkey shied away towards the outer edge of the path
after a powerful tug on his donkey’s bit had got it back on the straight and narrow
All I could do was mutter apologies and hurry down out of sight
most memorable places often also carry memorable (historical) persons: Gerace – Robert and Roger d’Hautville; Stilo – Giovanni Terestis; Serra S
Bruno – Bruno of Cologne and Roger; Rossano and the Patirion – Nilo and Bartolomaios; Buonvicino – S
Francesco; Le Castella – Giovanni Dionigi Galleni
in later life Uccialì who fought for the Turks in the Great Siege of 1565
But almost all of these places also carry glowing memories of living persons
between Scilla and Palmi stands out; while between Montalto and Bova there are the quintessential landscapes of Aspromonte
with Serra Dolcedorme and La Fagosa as the core
From what you write one concludes that Calabria could well be a tourist destination for many of us Maltese
though it does require careful planning in all cases
The main problem is that of first access: the Malta-Reggio Calabria air connection has unfortunately been discontinued; the Malta-Catania is not convenient and the Malta-Bari even less so
Regular sea connections only go as far as Pozzallo
One hopes that both these connections will improve in the near future
private transport – car or coach – is a must for almost all types of tourist
That can be arranged on the spot of course
There is now a small number of groups particularly in the north (Civita
Individual guides take small parties in Aspromonte and on the Sila
or do you still need your ‘nights out’
I have just returned from a couple of weeks in Calabria
I still have some loose ends to see to; so I am planning what may well be a final trip

Comedian turned portrait artist Anh Do takes full ownership of all his creations on his Brush With Fame series
“It’s all my own work,” Do told PS this week when asked about chatter within Sydney’s notoriously catty art circles that would suggest otherwise
Anh Do with his art teacher Paul Ryan.Credit: Sahlan Hayes
confirmed to PS he was paid by Do to help out in the initial stages of bringing the portraits to life
but Anh is a bit cagey about revealing how it all comes together

ultimately the show is a great success and helps put Australian art in the mainstream,” Ryan told PS
Do knows better than most that when it comes to art
So when you are knocking out portraits of famous Australians

one can expect feedback – both good and bad judging by the reactions that blew up on social media after his portrait of Marcia Hines

“For art’s sake please stop,” artist Bec Juniper wrote on Facebook

it hardly made a dent on the hugely popular series
the sixth season of which wraps up next Tuesday with Midnight Oil frontman and former politician Peter Garrett sitting for his portrait
PS can reveal there is a good reason why both the subject and the viewer do not see much of the paintings in progress
Do admitted he works on his portraits from photos he has studied in great detail well before his subjects enter the studio
and that while he aims to start with a fresh canvas for the filming
often he ends up presenting works he has already done – “studies” – as back-ups if he’s having an “off day” while the cameras are rolling
It was Ryan who taught Do the “impasto” technique of using thick layers of paint trowled onto the canvas with a palette knife
a style also used by high-profile artists such as Ben Quilty
Ryan said he advised Do on the initial line drawings for the works
though Do played down his old friend’s contribution when PS called
“I think he may be taking a bit too much credit,” Do laughed
adding he seeks Ryan’s “advice” when unsure about where a work is heading
“if I’ve got the shape of a nose or face wrong”
but was emphatic all the preliminary drawing and painting was exclusively his own work
Sometimes there might be half an hour where they say nothing and I’m deep into painting – that doesn’t make good TV so we obviously have to edit,” Do said
each portrait is at least a solid day’s work
with Do revealing some sitters had asked him to “fix a few things up” after filming stopped
The sitters get to take their paintings home
Creative collaborations are not new for Do
A decade ago the Herald revealed a ghost-writer was hired to work on Do’s bestselling memoir
which picked up three awards at the 2011 Australian Book Industry Awards
But publishers Allen and Unwin said Do’s final book bore no resemblance to the original manuscript handed to them by the ghost-writer
former senior Herald journalist Michael Visontay
Do said he was “unsure” if there will be a seventh series of Brush With Fame
explaining he now has a publishing deal with Allen and Unwin to write a staggering 50 children’s books over the next three years

I’m still pinching myself,” she told PS between sips of champagne from her Los Angeles backyard

What was not known at the time was that Voci is also known by the maiden name Maria Frascà
She is named as a cousin of Figliomeni by Italian authorities
When Figliomeni arrived in Canada in 2010 — before he went underground to avoid deportation back to Italy — he listed on his customs forms the address where he was staying as the home of an older male relative of Voci
There is no allegation or suggestion she was anything other than an innocent victim in the shooting
but her family ties to a fugitive allegedly jostling with other mobsters in a territorial dispute over gambling in cafés and bars is of interest to authorities
The Moka café was home to an illegal gambling operation at the time of the shootings
Police found card tables and electronic gaming machines at the café
York Regional Police released surveillance video of the suspect
Police then issued a Canada-wide warrant for Jason Hay
The manhunt ended in August 2015 with a high-risk arrest on Highway 400 when an SUV was stopped by force
Hay was charged with two counts of first-degree murder
He has not yet faced trial and has a court date scheduled Monday for pre-trial motions
Italian authorities tracked a power struggle in Ontario over gambling between factions of the ’Ndrangheta
the Mafia of the southern Italian region of Calabria
through wiretaps on mobsters’ phones making transatlantic calls
The phone calls suggest Figliomeni came to Canada in 2008 to help his mob clan push its claim to gambling territory in Toronto and York region
according to wiretap transcripts obtained by the Post
He returned to Italy but visited Toronto in 2009 and again in 2010
Figliomeni was born in the pretty Calabrian seaside town of Melito di Porto Salvo
the southernmost tip of the Italian mainland
He has five brothers in Italy and an uncle and several cousins in Canada
a large anti-Mafia operation in Italy named him among a long list of wanted mobsters
Italy issued an arrest warrant for him and he slipped from view in Canada
“It was quite a challenge for us to locate him,” said RCMP Supt
who is in charge of Serious Organized Crime and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit for the Toronto area
“By all appearances he kept a very low-profile
Police were able to trace him to 1248 Café
a premise that had been raided by police in 2016 in an illegal video gaming machine investigation
Toronto police entered the café on March 10 for a Liquor License Act inspection and arrested Figliomeni on an immigration warrant
He was polite and compliant but uncooperative when asked how he stayed hidden for so long
When interviewed by CBSA officers he said he was purposely trying to avoid facing his Mafia association charge in Italy
He refused to reveal where he had been staying
saying it would cause a “big problem” if he did
did not have a bank account here and had $200 in his wallet
Figliomeni did not fight to remain in Canada
He was placed on an Air Canada flight to Rome
He was arrested to face trial on the 2010 charges
York police said they were not involved in the arrest or removal of Figliomeni and declined to comment on its implication for the Moka café shooting as the case is before the courts
Toronto police confirmed its involvement in the liquor inspection but referred further questions to CBSA
CBSA was still not able to comment on the case
