Celluloid Junkie is proud to have partnered with Vista Cinema for the Cinema of the Month series
Vista is the world’s leading cinema management software solutions company
We won’t just be featuring cinemas whose operators use Vista
but we will surely mention when that is the case
CJ would like to thank everyone at Vista for partnering with CJ to showcase some of the most interesting
innovative and inspiring cinemas from around the world
Driving east from the centre of the Italian financial capital through one of the many peripheral arteries, you get out from the fast city routine and depart for a journey to a close encounter: at the end, you’ll be in front of a sort of round spaceship lit up by three-time Academy Award winner cinematographer Vittorio Storaro; he helped design the whole project together with THX Lucasfilm
The external archways are the distinctive signature of this cinema cathedral
the illuminated sign ‘ARCADIA’ shining with capital letters coloured like a rainbow in a white sky wall
his daughter Laura and the Fumagalli family
Both father and daughter have been in the independent cinema business for over forty years (first at Cinema Centrale from 1979)
the first with pre-booking service reserved seat selection
the pioneer in digital cinema from early 2001 with a digital screening
of “Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones” which was introduced by a special video-message from George Lucas
Arcadia was the first cinema to guarantee a real cinematic experience with tons of technology spread everywhere: since the beginning
it became a point of interest not only for cinema lovers in the Lombardy region
its consistent reputation of top quality theatrical experience has not changed and despite the high level reached throughout the years
the ticket prices are still affordable: EUR €7 to €10 (USD $8.15 to $11:16)
plus a little extra if you book your seat in advance
now you go on attracted by all these beauties
but it’s not over yet; the best is yet to come because
some pieces of cinema technology history make a welcome show of themselves
in the cinema lobby there is a permanent exhibition of cinema technology with the very first manufactured Cinemeccanica 70MM projector and an IMAX 15/70MM projector with a platter system – welcome to Cinema Paradiso
there is also a cinema dedicated Mondadori bookstore and a reserved area for kids where birthday parties are usually celebrated
the big concession stand widens the entire length of the perpendicular wall and
the toilets are easily accessible and sparkling clean (which is not always a given in a multiplex
for the kind of religion cinema is for some; four Doric columns decorate the back wall and the curved screen accentuates the theatrical perspective
The stadium seats are large and comfortable
but they are contained in height so that the first visual impression is a lower inclination of the stairs
the reality is that your row seems to be the only one and you won’t be disturbed by people sitting in front of you or passing through because there is a huge space between each row
along with the innovative “sense of technology” of Piero Fumagalli
were recognized by Union Internationale des Cinémas (International Union of Cinemas) with the UNIC Achievement Award at CineEurope
the enormous investments made for the massive upgrade of PLF Sala Energia were awarded with the ICTA Best Screen in Europe Award to both Piero and Laura
Since the closure in February caused by the COVID-19 pandemic
Arcadia Cinema has constantly been in touch with its audience and the cinema community thanks to social media and media partners (there is also a particularly active Facebook group called “Quelli della Sala Energia”
which translates to ‘The ones of Sala Energia’); the cinema reopened on the 19th of August with the tenth anniversary release of “Inception” (including a 10 minute behind-the-scenes featurette of “Tenet”) along with special 70mm screenings of “Interstellar” and “2001: A Space Odyssey,” Pixar’s “Onward” and Italian drama “Volevo nascondermi,” pleasing both its youngest moviegoers and arthouse film lovers before a run of sold out “Tenet” screenings (with social distancing
Christopher Nolan’s recent release is available in the special exclusive 70mm format and digital
both in Italian dubbed and subtitled Original Version
The first days of the movie’s release – though it’s not an isolated case – fans arrived by train or car in the early afternoon from all over Northern Italy regions and Southern Switzerland
attended the 70MM screening and had enough time to go back home
I don’t think this happens in any other cinema in Italy
The safety measures regulations that all cinemas in Italy must respect didn’t affect the throngs of spectators and the passion of the Arcadia staff
a real passion which is still perceptible behind the face masks worn by everyone working there
The first night of “Tenet,” PLF Sala Energia was almost completely full and every single patron seated inside was wearing a mask without any issue or complaint
All the worries about the reopening and the return of movies to cinemas has been successfully overcome thanks to one great title
and I would say it is the right title for the huge screen and sound system of the Arcadia Cinema

The collaboration between DistriRail and Hannibal
from February this year comes at a very good time to support the fresh fruit supply chain at a time of significant disruption
countries in EU locked down their borders and imposed restrictions on their citizens as well as travellers
Millions of workers cannot get to the fields for harvesting and planting
was further affecting the fresh food supply chain
To mitigate the trucking capacity issue for long haul fresh food trades within the EU and to provide reliable supply chain services
Contship is giving producers and buyers alternative solutions through international intermodal and ramp services
“It’s our mission to ensure transport for goods
through our railway and cool solutions for intra-EU and short-sea trades moving northbound and southbound
amid the current disruption." said Daniele Testi
Marketing and Communications Director of Contship Italia
DistriRail and Contship Italia Group currently guarantee a daily train connection between the Netherlands (Rotterdam)
Belgium (Antwerp) and Italy (Melzo-Milano)
The rail corridor offers dedicated network reaching all Rotterdam deep-sea terminals and via the terminal at the “Rail Service Center” we are also connecting to UK
Hannibal runs several rail services to Padua
the latest providing short sea connections with Turkey
Lebanon and Albania and all major port destinations in the East Mediterranean Sea
Ravenna Container Terminal represents a strategic gateway for fresh cargo trades in the Adriatic Sea offering several maritime connections with very fast transit times
Operationally the goods are today unstuffed from the reefer containers and directly loaded onto refrigerated trucks that are reaching Northern European areas by road
At both sides and Italy especially in Ravenna we also offer a bonded warehouse with the possibility of completing stuffing/un-stuffing of all kinds of goods especially perishable ones
all inspection activities such as: port health
X –Rays are conducted in the terminal area with many benefits for customers
The rail service for fresh cargo is enabled by the “45’ Feet High Cube Diesel-Electric Pallet Wide Reefer” units that Distrirail and Hannibal can offer to shippers and freight Forwarders
They can run for over 5 days without plug-in
keeping the inside temperature controlled in a range of minus and plus 25 degree Celsius
Consumption is at the maximum of 2 litres of diesel per hours to keep the coolest temperature
These units match the need of several commodities including fish
Products that today have reached an average increase in demand by the larger Italian retailer in excess of 20% compared to same period of 2019
Furthermore Italy is one of the largest producers of high quality foods which is expected to boost in the coming weeks as a consequence of the massive financial support that the Italian government has put in place since April the 6th for over euro 200 billion specifically designed to support the export of “made in Italy” production
something unexpected has happened – air quality in Europe has significantly improved due to the huge reduction on cars on the road
According to the European Environment Agency (EEA) data shows air pollutant concentrations in Rome and Milan have dropped by 50 per cent
Air pollutants impact the fruit quality and as well as the harvest
Crops can be damaged when exposed to high concentrations of various air pollutants
“We as an industry can also play our part to help the EU become a neutral state
One way is to consider diversifying the modes of transportation
The EU has already stepped up by announcing the “European Green Deal” in December 2019
Transport is currently the second largest “Greenhouse Gases emitting” sector after energy production
accounting for nearly 24% of Europe’s GHG emissions.” said Testi
Among all the modes of transportation (excluding aviation)
with 40% of those road emissions being emitted in urban and suburban areas
Apart from focusing on keeping the flow of fruit and fresh cargo going during this challenging time
what we are facing right now is indeed nature’s wake-up call for us to make a healthier and greener choice
being long-established intermodal services leaders in the region
are ready and committed to partner with shippers around the world to work towards a cleaner environment and a healthier future for our next generation
