the birth control website for the Center for Disease Control was just taken down that’s why I thought Operation Shylock was a really interesting intertext because it's both about character and also about ideas In Operation Shylock the narrator is a writer and anthropologists employ their own ways of seeing the world onto an entire society Why did you choose to make your narrator an anthropologist and journalists are sort of like anthropologists I wanted my narrator to have some fluency in folk tales That is an archetypical anthropologist in literature: someone who sits just on the outside of belief and studies belief and looks closely at belief and theorizes about belief but maybe never actually believes anything That's kind of the modern condition for a lot of secular humanists I spent a while trying to figure out if I believed in anything and was kind of Buddhist for a while We’re living in this very cultish age where people’s desire for faith and purpose has been mutated and used against them I thought an anthropologist was the right gaze to train on all these ideas: she’s someone who wants to believe but struggles to which then sets her up for the second half of the book when her desire to believe makes her vulnerable NMI have a similar instinct to rely on professions as a way to enter my narrator’s worldviews I think there's a more spiritual alignment I need with my narrators My process of finding my narrators isn’t as simple as they do this job so I can write about them but I try to access tangible things about them first and professions are a kind of indoctrination into the world that each person—for the most part—willingly chooses to do and you haven't even been in the working world SS I do think work was an entry point for me I worked at a media startup that has since gone bust The CEO of it is going to prison for ten years because of white-collar fraud Even if it's not what you want to take meaning from Profession is not an empty way of accessing your character there's a reason that George Saunders writes so much about work and he's so good at letting his characters' voices be infected with corporate vocabulary and Orwellian language and turning it all into something hilariously menacing That’s what happens if you swallow the corporate dictionary NM That sounds terrifying and makes me never want to graduate I also think of a true fluency in plot—so much happens in his stories and he’s constantly playing with the reader’s expectations My last question is about a comment you made in an Electric Literature interview where you were asked what the best hobby for writers is "Are we supposed to have hobbies?!" Have you found one since SS (laughter) A friend of mine told me that my hobby is getting enough protein because I lift weights most days It’s the thing that I do that is completely outside of everything else that I do where there are theoretically no stakes related to my job not because I'm a workaholic but because I don't compartmentalize All of my days bleed together in a way that is incredibly pleasurable to me I feel like part of the reason I wanted to be a writer was that I wanted my work and my life to feel like they were the same thing That’s maybe not the healthiest approach to the world but it's also not quite the same as being an office workaholic because my work and my life get to belong mostly to me That's what's cool about getting to be a writer Nico Mestre is a fourth-year undergraduate student at Emory University completing a short story collection for his Creative Writing honors thesis he served as Editor-in-Chief of Lullwater Review His writing has appeared in Alloy literary magazine and the Emory Wheel He fact-checks interviews and essays for BOMB Mestre Didi: Spiritual Form is a landmark monographic exhibition exploring the work of the late Afro-Brazilian sculptor cultural advocate and spiritual leader Mestre Didi (Salvador museum exhibition of Didi’s work in 25 years the survey unites over 30 of his sculptures and offers a rare view of his far-reaching spiritual and artistic legacy Mestre Didi was a visionary emissary for Candomblé He was perhaps the first artist to reimagine Candomblé ritual objects as artworks in their own right El Museo’s exhibition will foreground Mestre Didi’s spiritually evocative and formally imaginative sculptures and present new interpretations of his symbolic repertoire His distinctive artworks combine the traditional materials born as Deoscóredes Maximiliano dos Santos was closely involved in the Candomblé religious society Ilê Axé Opô Afonjá from a young age where he spent decades making traditional ritual objects he began to create sculptures and pursue exhibition opportunities with early shows at Galeria Ralf (Salvador) After receiving a fellowship from UNESCO to conduct fieldwork in West Africa in 1967 Didi and the anthropologist Juana Elbein dos Santos organized the exhibition Afro-Brazilian Art and Buenos Aires between 1968 and 1974 and included Didi’s work Since the 1980s Didi has been included in landmark exhibitions such as A Mão Afro-Brasileira [The Afro-Brazilian Hand] at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) in 1988; Art in Latin America at the Hayward Gallery in 1989; Magiciens de la Terre [Magicians of the Earth] in 1989; 24-year-old Adlai Mestre for allegedly shooting and killing his mom He’s also accused of killing their family dog family and friends are mourning this massive loss all at once It impacted the staff,” said Liliana Prado-Bujanda executive director of the Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation. Breille was a patient at the Carrie Tingley Hospital for a decade she got the chance to try several programs like adaptive cycling “It’s the kids like Breille who really kind of show the way and open up these opportunities for these other kids who didn’t think they could go on a ride,” said Todd Trautwein who knew Breille. Todd and Kerry Trautwein got to know Breille through the foundation They brought with them one of their favorite memories of Breille “We both stopped our bikes and got off our bikes It was kind of crossing like it wanted to go that way I know exactly what to do,’” said Trautwein. The Trautwein’s explained that memory perfectly captures who Breille was “It was her kindness for everyone she met and the world’s gonna miss her,” said Todd. Prado-Bujanda with the foundation says they want to make sure Breille’s legacy lives on by helping more children “All the funds received through the scholarship fund in her name will be used to provide adaptive equipment for another child or group of kids that would like to continue to participate in either the adaptive cycling or in the wheelchair ball for her,” said Prado-Bujanda. If you’d like to donate to the Breille Mestre Memorial Scholarship Fund or learn more about the Carrie Tingley Foundation, click here. Joanna Jaworska, assistant professor at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Olsztyn, is first author; among the co-authors is Shebl Salem, a postdoctoral researcher in de Mestre’s lab. To better understand the molecular pathways activated during equine pregnancy, the team used single-cell RNA sequencing to characterize the transcriptome (the library of RNA molecules expressed) of nearly 97,000 individual endometrial cells before and after implantation. This high-tech approach allowed them to identify 40 distinct groups of cells, creating an atlas of what genes are or are not expressed within each individual cell. This revealed multiple new immune subpopulations active at implantation and allowed them to directly compare each cell type with those present during early human pregnancy. “Implantation comes with remodeling and complex cellular interactions involving epithelial, stromal and immune cells, as well as glands and blood vessels,” de Mestre said. “The molecules regulating this process have been undefined, and we had a unique opportunity to understand the critical events in early equine pregnancy.” The data from the study has been compiled into a detailed atlas of equine pregnancy, enabling future studies to examine which genes may or may not go awry during miscarriage or other fertility issues. The atlas revealed some unexpected results, including the abundance of cells known as endometrial natural killers (eNK) throughout implantation. “This was surprising to us, as eNK cells are traditionally associated with highly invasive placentae and had only been described in small numbers in the mare,” de Mestre said. “Application of these highly sensitive techniques allowed us to show they actually represent nearly half of all the immune cells in the uterus.” Based on the genes they expressed, the researchers believe these cells may be involved in key adaptions required for a successful pregnancy, such as regulating maternal immune responses to the fetus, facilitating remodeling of the endometrium and protection against viral pathogens. “We know that these cells are the predominant immune cell present in many other species,” de Mestre said, “which means these cells have been evolutionarily conserved and adapted for the pregnant state across all mammals.” With these newly understood similarities between horses and humans, the atlas promises to yield insights into fertility for both species. “The data provides a comprehensive transcriptomic resource for researchers who are interested in investigating early pregnancy in horses, as well performing comparative studies in other mammals, including humans,” de Mestre said. High-resolution methods have changed how scientists think about species-specific differences in maternal immunity to the implanting embryo, de Mestre said, and such methods show promise in identifying novel targets that could impact fertility in both horses and humans. A terse statement in the daily bulletin from the press office of the Holy See announced on Monday morning that Pope Francis accepted the resignation of 55-year-old Archbishop Gabriel Antonio Mestre after only eight and a half months in office The press office gave no hint of a reason for the resignation but a statement from Mestre on Monday said Francis demanded his resignation over something to do with Mestre’s former see which Mestre governed from August 2017 until July 2023 Mar del Plata appears to be in some significant trouble Two bishops-elect resigned the government of Mar del Plata all Pope Francis’s guys the first of the two men named to succeed Mestre in Mar del Plata struggled after ocular surgery and decided he really oughtn’t take up the new assignment had allegations against him from at least one woman The nunciature in Argentina apparently knew something since they issued a statement of support for Larrazábal and downplaying unspecified rumors about his conduct and character It is fair to wonder whether Francis personally knew about either fellow’s struggles and fair to ask who knew what about whom and when and fair to think Francis ought to have known in any case it should have been easy to spin this as the work of a hands-on leader who acts with alacrity when problems come to light Whatever is going on in Argentina and in Rome—it bears mention that Tucho was in to see the Holy Father on Monday morning—selling it to the public as the result of a pope who governs without fear or favor should have been straightforward Pope Francis has a very big comms outfit full of supremely competent professionals—I mean the people in Comms who actually do things—champing at the bit and rearing to go which is to get in front of stories like this one and shape the narrative for their principal The Vatican’s comms apparatchiks have strong relationships with journalists in Rome and around the world as well as copious experience with just this sort of work and lots of great ideas there is a long history of cutting the comms people out of comms work One thinks of the Williamson debacle under Benedict XVI when the press office announced the lifting of the excommunication declared on four SSPX bishops—billed as a “rehabilitation” though it really wasn’t—the holocaust-denying Richard Williamson among them There were plenty of people in several comms outfits who would have told the decision-makers he was a kook dysfunction has become the order of the day Cutting Comms out of comms is now standard operating procedure One can imagine Pope Francis in the place of Strother Martin’s Captain saying: “What we’ve got here is failure to communicate.” If you value the news and views Catholic World Report provides, please consider donating to of horses – which share many important similarities with humans in their chromosomes and pregnancies – revealed that 42% of miscarriages and spontaneous abortions in the first two months of pregnancy were due to complications from an extra set of chromosomes “Over that embryonic period [up to eight weeks from conception], triploidy had rarely been reported in mammals outside of women,” said Mandi de Mestre the Dorothy Havemeyer McConville Professor of Equine Medicine at Baker Institute for Animal Health and in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine “The study tells us that over the first six weeks of gestation this will likely be the primary cause of pregnancy loss following natural conception.” Broodmares graze in a field at Baker Institute for Animal Health de Mestre is the corresponding author of “Naturally Occurring Horse Model of Miscarriage Reveals Temporal Relationship Between Chromosomal Aberration Type and Point of Lethality,” published August 5 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Human miscarriages occur in 10-20% of pregnancies and are commonly associated with chromosomal errors but there have been no suitable animal models that truly duplicate the features of the condition The new research findings will help veterinarians better understand the causes of pregnancy loss in horses and identifies horses as an excellent model for studying human miscarriage “We were able to study the impact of chromosome errors across the entire pregnancy in the horse,” de Mestre said “We found that triploidy is only associated with losses in early pregnancy.” and earlier at The Royal Veterinary College received 256 fetus and placenta samples from veterinarians who treated horses with failed pregnancies over a period of 10 years the researchers were able to investigate the prevalence of different types of chromosomal copy number errors associated with pregnancy loss They found that chromosomal errors occurred in 57.9% of pregnancy losses up to day 55 of gestation in 57.2% of losses between days 56 and 110 and in only 1.4% of losses between days 111 and the end of pregnancy Aneuploidy (loss or gain of a single whole chromosome) was mainly associated with miscarriages in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy while deletions or duplications of only part of a chromosome were found in miscarriages after 110 days These findings turned out to be remarkably similar to those observed in a number of large studies in women Horses are a good model for studying human pregnancies because they have a similar gestation period – 11 months compared to nine months in women – and the embryo develops at a similar rate in the early stages horse chromosomes have a very similar genetic content to human chromosomes which makes them particularly relevant for the study of chromosome errors Reasons for miscarriage in women in very early pregnancy have been difficult to determine because most fetuses during this period are lost at home leaving scientists without material – and data – to study The study’s findings provide insight into the frequency of chromosome errors over the equivalent period of the first six weeks of human gestation Because of the value of horses and the emotional attachment their owners have to them which then provide extensive data for research Mice have a gestation period of about three weeks and natural pregnancy losses in mice are low. the study provides new details about common chromosomal abnormalities that will likely change the clinical management of pregnancies if a clinician determines that a horse has a major chromosomal error they may no longer choose to extend that pregnancy by administering hormones The study will also point researchers toward the development of new diagnostic tests for chromosome abnormalities in horse fetuses and investigating molecular mechanisms that lead to these abnormalities “This research has provided a foundation for understanding the genetic causes of pregnancy loss in horses often referred to as pregnancy loss of unknown cause,” said Shebl Salem a postdoctoral researcher in de Mestre’s Equine Pregnancy Lab and a co-first author of the study. Other co-first authors include Jessica Lawson of the Royal Veterinary College in London The study was partly funded by the Horserace Betting Levy Board and Thoroughbred Breeders Association. Get Cornell news delivered right to your inbox The architectural studio Octavio Mestre in collaboration with Michel Matival from C+D studio have designed a new coworking space different layouts and accesses through sliding doors The project continually seeks flexibility in spaces that allow the rotation of users creating spaces that can be joined together more easily the intervention involved opening holes in the rear façade (corten steel boxes that can be inhabited as was already done in the Olivé Gumà Clinic in Barcelona or in the Tamariu house) and in the roof through skylights with solar control that illuminate the central space many of them mobile to favor different implementations and modules accessible through sliding doors that can be joined at will He had also governed previously the Diocese of Mar del Plata for 6 years, in what seemed a successful term. Argentine Archbishop Gabriel Antonio Mestre CELAM via Wikimedia (CC BY-SA 4.0).But in the letter announcing his resignation Mestre said it had come at the pope’s request The archbishop explained that Francis had summoned him to Rome to “dialogue about some aspects of the Diocese of Mar del Plata after my transfer to the Archdiocese of La Plata upon being appointed metropolitan archbishop.” "After confronting some different perceptions of what happened in the Diocese of Mar del Plata from November 2023 to the present Pope Francis asked me to resign from the See of La Plata," he said Mestre’s resignation as La Plata’s archbishop is connected to a complicated succession fight in the Diocese of Mar del Plata Share Mestre was appointed archbishop of La Plata on July 28, 2023, taking possession of his see in September, the same month his predecessor, Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, started work as prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. Most local observers regarded La Plata a tough job. The Archdiocese of La Plata is generally seen as having a “conservative” profile, with a succession of bishops to match it since the 1970s. Before the appointment of Fernández, a close collaborator of Francis’, the archdiocese was led by Archbishop Héctor Aguer, perhaps the bishop who has been most critical of Francis in his homeland. The pope accepted Aguer’s resignation in 2018, shortly after he turned 75. But while Fernández was never likely to gel with the local clergy, Francis was believed to want a trusted man in the third most prominent see in the country, after Buenos Aires and Córdoba. “Fernández was not loved one bit in La Plata, neither among the clergy nor the faithful,” a source close to the archdiocesan chancery told The Pillar. “And it was understood that Mestre arrived [to La Plata] at the suggestion of Fernández.” Before he was appointed to the La Plata archdiocese, Mestre governed the Diocese of Mar del Plata for six years and was also considered close to Francis and his pastoral priorities, like Fernández. But unlike Fernandez, Mestre managed to win over the clergy of the Archdiocese of La Plata very early in his tenure in the archdiocese. “He had become a very beloved archbishop in a very short time,” one La Plata priest told The Pillar. But with local clergy happy with their new archbishop, Mestre did have problems in his former diocese, Mar del Plata. After Mestre's departure for La Plata, the Diocese of Mar del Plata became a revolving door of episcopal appointments. Bishop José María Baliña, auxiliary of Buenos Aires, was first to be appointed, on Nov. 21, 2023. But on Dec.13, Baliña resigned before he could be installed as bishop. Baliña said in a public letter that he was facing serious health issues following a retinal detachment, two complicated surgeries, and one more scheduled. The risk of losing his sight in the short term was high, he said, which precipitated his decision. “When my appointment was published, I received such an avalanche of greetings, reports and recommendations that I realized that I was not in a position to take on the mission there. After discerning it better and consulting with the Holy See, I decided to present my resignation,” he said. Sources close to the appointment and resignation told The Pillar that there was nothing unusual about Baliña's resignation. Instead, the bishop has continued to exercise his episcopal ministry as auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires without any role in governance. Alongside news of Baliña's resignation, the appointment of his successor, the Claretian Bishop Gustavo Larrazábal, auxiliary of San Juan de Cuyo, was announced. But shortly after his appointment, complaints started to circulate against Larrazábal, alleging harassment and abuse of power between 2007 and 2013 in other dioceses. A woman originally from Mar del Plata alleged that Larrazábal had harassed her in Buenos Aires, where Larrazábal served at that time. When the complaint against Larrazábal surfaced, following his nomination to Mar del Plata, the apostolic nunciature in Argentina published a statement saying that it supported Larrazábal's appointment, against “rumors” that “have no basis.” On Jan. 17 of this year, Larrazábal presented his resignation. Auxiliary Bishop Ernesto Giobando, SJ of Buenos Aires, was named apostolic administrator of the Mar del Plata diocese — the third bishop assigned to lead the diocese since Mestre. The timeline of the nuncio’s emphatic defense of Larrazábal, followed by his resignation, left lingering questions for many Catholics. One of the first measures that Giobando took as apostolic administrator of Mar del Plata was to open an investigation into the vicar general of the diocese, Fr. Luis Albóniga, over his short role as diocesan administrator, in the period after Mestre left for La Plata. Albóniga was a close collaborator of Mestre and, according to local media, his preferred candidate to succeed him. Amid the investigation, Albóniga was temporarily sent to serve in the Diocese of Jujuy, more than 1,300 miles away. Sources close to the situation told The Pillar that Albóniga was critical of the governance of Mar del Plata after Mestre’s departure, which became a factor in his departure for Jujuy. But the deeper reason could be something else, several local sources explained. According to local media reports, a group of influential people from the diocese, close to Archbishop Mestre, pushed to have Albóniga named as bishop after Baliña's resignation. This group is alleged to have been behind the leak of the complaints against Larrazábal, meant to force his resignation and clear the way for Albóniga. But after Francis appointed Giobando – the pope’s former student at the Jesuit seminary in Buenos Aires – as apostolic administrator, the lobbying operation for Albóniga went up a gear. On March 28, during the Chrism Mass, a group appeared at the Cathedral of Mar del Plata with signs addressed to the apostolic administrator, demanding Albóniga’s return to the diocese. Catholics in de Mar del Plata demonstrating for Fr. Luis Albóniga during the Chrism Mass. Image via La Capital de Mar del Plata. In addition, the newspaper La Capital – perhaps the most widely read in Mar del Plata – published a letter of support from Albóniga asking for his quick return and stating that “since the sad news [of his departure for Jujuy] became known, it has not stopped being in the mouths and in the hearts” of all the parishioners. “There is tremendous consternation, as well as – it must be said – displeasure at the decision taken and the way in which it was executed,” said the letter, which was signed by a group of local Catholics, including businessman Florencio Aldrey, owner of the newspaper. La Capital had previously published an editorial in December questioning Larrazábal's appointment before, on January 9, reporting the complaints against Larrazábal for harassment and abuse of power. This, according to local sources, is what led Francis to summon Mestre to Rome to discuss the situation. During that conversation, The Pillar was told, there was disagreement about Mestre's role in Larrazábal's resignation and the signs of support for Albóniga but Francis asked Mestre to resign. While none of the sources close to the archbishop and the diocese who spoke to The Pillar claimed first-hand knowledge of Mestre acting to coordinate or encourage the demonstrations for Albóniga’s return to Mar del Plata or in the resurfacing of the complaints against Larrazábal. However, they all pointed to Albóniga serving as the archbishop’s vicar general in the diocese for almost all of Mestre's tenure. Local media has also reported that Mestre requested Albóniga’s appointment as auxiliary bishop for the diocese in 2019, although the Vatican decided to appoint another priest, the Augustinian Darío Quintana. Now, with the papally-requested resignation of Mestre, Francis has two important vacancies to fill: first, a diocese that has already had two failed nominations and, second, the third most important archdiocese in the country. Given the considerable instability in both dioceses following the spate of resignations, it would make sense if the pope chooses to allow the waters to calm before making any new appointments. The resignations in Mar del Plata also suggest that there have been problems with the background review processes for prospective episcopal appointments in Argentina. Baliña's health problems were well known before his appointment and the complaint against Larrazábal, although it did not proceed, was certainly known to his religious superiors and congregation. Even if those complaints were not deemed credible, the decision to appoint Larrazábal without a plan to mitigate their resurfacing appears questionable, given his subsequent resignation. The situation is perhaps even more complex in La Plata. It is an archdiocese whose clergy are widely accepted to have a pastoral and theological character different from that of Francis. Bishops like Mestre, who managed to earn the trust of a conservative clergy while himself embodying a style closer to the pope’s, do not grow on trees. Francis could find himself forced to choose between appointing a bishop with an outlook and character more closely resembling the archdiocese, or opting for someone he trusts personally, but who might find it much harder to settle into office. For now, La Plata is being led by its most senior auxiliary, Bishop Alberto Bochaney, as apostolic administrator. Bochaney was made auxiliary under Archbishop Aguer in 2013 and the signs so far suggest he is no less invested in the succession crisis in both dioceses. As Bochaney presided over the Corpus Christi celebration in La Plata last week, faithful attended the celebration with banners in support of Mestre and Albóniga. In the intentions of the Mass, special prayers were offered “for Mons. Gabriel Mestre, Father Luis Albóniga and all the clergy, so that this time of trial may also be a 'time of grace' for them.” Bochaney announced, through tears, in a speech he read after the Mass, that Mestre would remain in La Plata until the appointment of the next archbishop. “He has decided to withdraw a little. He has asked us not to say goodbye or send greetings. For example, I had specially invited him to come to this Eucharist and he told me that he did not want to be present so as not to be a cause of distraction," Bochaney said. The layout doesn't help (me) either as the article is made of very short paragraphs, at times only a few words long. Maybe the use of bullet points to highlight the timeline should help, along a clear differentiation of who is who, where and when. If only there were some word that would capture the idea of "walking together" that might be applicable to this situation! He had also governed previously the Diocese of Mar del Plata for 6 years, in what seemed a successful term. Mestre said it had come at the pope’s request The archbishop explained that Francis had summoned him to Rome to “dialogue about some aspects of the Diocese of Mar del Plata after my transfer to the Archdiocese of La Plata upon being appointed metropolitan archbishop.” "After confronting some different perceptions of what happened in the Diocese of Mar del Plata from November 2023 to the present Pope Francis asked me to resign from the See of La Plata," he said. Mestre’s resignation as La Plata’s archbishop is connected to a complicated succession fight in the Diocese of Mar del Plata Share Mestre was appointed archbishop of La Plata on July 28 Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández started work as prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. Most local observers regarded La Plata a tough job. The Archdiocese of La Plata is generally seen as having a “conservative” profile with a succession of bishops to match it since the 1970s. the archdiocese was led by Archbishop Héctor Aguer perhaps the bishop who has been most critical of Francis in his homeland. The pope accepted Aguer’s resignation in 2018 But while Fernández was never likely to gel with the local clergy Francis was believed to want a trusted man in the third most prominent see in the country after Buenos Aires and Córdoba. “Fernández was not loved one bit in La Plata neither among the clergy nor the faithful,” a source close to the archdiocesan chancery told The Pillar. “And it was understood that Mestre arrived [to La Plata] at the suggestion of Fernández.” Before he was appointed to the La Plata archdiocese Mestre governed the Diocese of Mar del Plata for six years and was also considered close to Francis and his pastoral priorities Mestre managed to win over the clergy of the Archdiocese of La Plata very early in his tenure in the archdiocese “He had become a very beloved archbishop in a very short time,” one La Plata priest told The Pillar But with local clergy happy with their new archbishop Mestre did have problems in his former diocese the Diocese of Mar del Plata became a revolving door of episcopal appointments. Baliña resigned before he could be installed as bishop. Baliña said in a public letter that he was facing serious health issues following a retinal detachment The risk of losing his sight in the short term was high reports and recommendations that I realized that I was not in a position to take on the mission there After discerning it better and consulting with the Holy See I decided to present my resignation,” he said. Sources close to the appointment and resignation told The Pillar that there was nothing unusual about Baliña's resignation the bishop has continued to exercise his episcopal ministry as auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires without any role in governance. Alongside news of Baliña's resignation the Claretian Bishop Gustavo Larrazábal complaints started to circulate against Larrazábal alleging harassment and abuse of power between 2007 and 2013 in other dioceses. A woman originally from Mar del Plata alleged that Larrazábal had harassed her in Buenos Aires where Larrazábal served at that time. When the complaint against Larrazábal surfaced the apostolic nunciature in Argentina published a statement saying that it supported Larrazábal's appointment against “rumors” that “have no basis.” was named apostolic administrator of the Mar del Plata diocese — the third bishop assigned to lead the diocese since Mestre. The timeline of the nuncio’s emphatic defense of Larrazábal left lingering questions for many Catholics One of the first measures that Giobando took as apostolic administrator of Mar del Plata was to open an investigation into the vicar general of the diocese, Fr. Catholics in de Mar del Plata demonstrating for Fr Image via La Capital de Mar del Plata. In addition the newspaper La Capital – perhaps the most widely read in Mar del Plata – published a letter of support from Albóniga asking for his quick return and stating that “since the sad news [of his departure for Jujuy] became known it has not stopped being in the mouths and in the hearts” of all the parishioners. as well as – it must be said – displeasure at the decision taken and the way in which it was executed,” said the letter which was signed by a group of local Catholics La Capital had previously published an editorial in December questioning Larrazábal's appointment before reporting the complaints against Larrazábal for harassment and abuse of power. is what led Francis to summon Mestre to Rome to discuss the situation. there was disagreement about Mestre's role in Larrazábal's resignation and the signs of support for Albóniga but Francis asked Mestre to resign. While none of the sources close to the archbishop and the diocese who spoke to The Pillar claimed first-hand knowledge of Mestre acting to coordinate or encourage the demonstrations for Albóniga’s return to Mar del Plata or in the resurfacing of the complaints against Larrazábal they all pointed to Albóniga serving as the archbishop’s vicar general in the diocese for almost all of Mestre's tenure. Local media has also reported that Mestre requested Albóniga’s appointment as auxiliary bishop for the diocese in 2019 although the Vatican decided to appoint another priest the Augustinian Darío Quintana. with the papally-requested resignation of Mestre Francis has two important vacancies to fill: first a diocese that has already had two failed nominations and the third most important archdiocese in the country. Given the considerable instability in both dioceses following the spate of resignations it would make sense if the pope chooses to allow the waters to calm before making any new appointments. The resignations in Mar del Plata also suggest that there have been problems with the background review processes for prospective episcopal appointments in Argentina Baliña's health problems were well known before his appointment and the complaint against Larrazábal was certainly known to his religious superiors and congregation. Even if those complaints were not deemed credible the decision to appoint Larrazábal without a plan to mitigate their resurfacing appears questionable The situation is perhaps even more complex in La Plata It is an archdiocese whose clergy are widely accepted to have a pastoral and theological character different from that of Francis who managed to earn the trust of a conservative clergy while himself embodying a style closer to the pope’s Francis could find himself forced to choose between appointing a bishop with an outlook and character more closely resembling the archdiocese or opting for someone he trusts personally but who might find it much harder to settle into office. La Plata is being led by its most senior auxiliary Bochaney was made auxiliary under Archbishop Aguer in 2013 and the signs so far suggest he is no less invested in the succession crisis in both dioceses. As Bochaney presided over the Corpus Christi celebration in La Plata last week faithful attended the celebration with banners in support of Mestre and Albóniga special prayers were offered “for Mons Father Luis Albóniga and all the clergy so that this time of trial may also be a 'time of grace' for them.” that Mestre would remain in La Plata until the appointment of the next archbishop. He has asked us not to say goodbye or send greetings I had specially invited him to come to this Eucharist and he told me that he did not want to be present so as not to be a cause of distraction," Barbançon Mestre had to settle for fourteenth place with Sir Donnerhall II in the opening of the Grand Prix of the World Cup Final And there was quite a bit of disappointment involved the only French dressage rider in this event refused to give interviews she later poured her heart out on social media: "To be completely honest this is the first time in my career that I've left the ring with such a bittersweet feeling he is still as fresh and happy to do his work He performed a smooth and flawless test today exactly what I strive for: to show elegance In twenty years of presence on the international scene I have never expressed what I had in my heart but today I do because I feel extremely betrayed by our sport "All we ask for is a little more recognition for our work it seems that even if we compete in the same event often not all riders are judged in the same way my pursuit of harmony was interpreted as a lack of energy this lack of fairness is a lack of respect for the horses and all the people who support us directly and indirectly We simply want to be fairly judged and respected for our efforts because ultimately This doesn't change the love I have for my horses and for this sport She also mentions that her comments are not directed towards fellow riders "I congratulate everyone for their dedication and shared passion for this sport I am grateful to be surrounded by talented riders who inspire me and help me improve." However putting things into perspective should be possible according to her "Even if expressing my thoughts could have negative consequences for me I genuinely believe it's simply fair to myself to do so." Matisse died in Nice, France, in 1954, in the same city he had immortalized well before as we are told by The Open Window of 1919-another important loan from the Centre Pompidou-which already recounts a seascape, laden with light and with that visual layout that passes for a vase of flowers in the foreground and a balustrade, perspective tools that would become one of the recurring elements of his painting. All that remains, then, is to immerse oneself in the light and color of the Mediterranean accompanied by the notes of George Garshwin’s Rhapsody in Blue to underscore how Matisse is always and everywhere the painter of joy. Archbishop of La Plata An Argentine archbishop was reportedly asked to resign by the Pope because he “conspired” to ensure his former vicar general was made a bishop the Archbishop of La Plata Gabriel Antonio Mestre resigned at the Pope’s behest He said he was “summoned” to Rome and “confronted different perceptions” of events in the Diocese of Mar del Plata Last year, Mestre became Archbishop of La Plata, succeeding Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández who last July became Prefect of the Dicastery of the Congregation of Faith the Pope appointed Bishop José María Baliña, an auxilary of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires Francis then designated Bishop Gustavo Manuel Larrazábal CFM an auxiliary of the Archdiocese of San Juan de Cuyo He too resigned following “a process of discernment and prayer” The Vatican dismissed as “baseless rumours” allegations Larrazábal had sexually harassed a woman InfoVaticana.com then claimed to have found “widespread consensus” in Argentina that Mestre was asked to resign for “conspiring” to make his former vicar general in Mar del Plata The website alleged that Mestre and Albóniga had “intervened” in the resignations of Baliña and Larrazábal the Diocese of Mar del Plata said Albóniga had been posted “for a time” to the north-eastern Diocese of Jujuy the diocese said canonical procedure needed to be followed to shed light on Fr Albóniga’s behaviour while he was diocesan administrator from September 2023 to January 2024 Locals protested against Albóniga’s transfer they said he had “earned respect through his charisma humilty and culture which had attracted the faithful from other parishes” They noted his homilies were “of an unusual quality both regarding their religious and spiritual [content] embellished by his impeccable command of rhetoric and language” They added: “The proof of this is that Mass in his parish was packed out There was not enough room for everyone who attended.” The Argentine daily La Nación claimed the “trigger” which prompted the Pope to summon Mestre was an “orchestrated” protest against Albóniga’s transfer to Jujuy by lay Catholics on 5 April At the Chrism Mass in Mar del Plata Cathedral some congregants held up hand-written signs calling for the return of Fr Albóniga Mestre’s resignation prompted the Argentine author and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Adolfo Esquivel to write to the Pope He described Mestre as a “pastor committed to the Church and the people of God who travels alongside those you rightly point out are ‘disposable’ a group whose number is increasing daily in our country due to injustice Esquivel added: “In times of uncertainty lights and shadows Gabriel is one of the lights needed to reach the mind and heart of our Church and people.” Get the latest news and special starting with the entry of two new works into the collection: Versus by Tony Cragg (Liverpool 1949) and Draco Piscis by Agnes Questionmark (1995).Located within the 22-hectare historic garden surrounding Villa Fürstenberg the Park was created in 2023 at the instigation of Banca Ifis President Ernesto Fürstenberg Fassio it has established itself as a point of reference for contemporary sculpture in Italy and Europe thanks to a permanent collection that now has 24 sculptures created by 14 internationally renowned artists These include names such as Fernando Botero 2025 opens with the entry of two significant new works that expand the visual and conceptual narrative of the Park a permanent sculpture signed by Tony Cragg previously exhibited in 2011 under the Louvre’s famous glass pyramid is created in an intense orange hue and plays on the dualism between balance and dynamism A seemingly compact circular form disintegrates into a vortex of elliptical columns It is precisely this multiplicity of interpretations that makes the work a central element of the 2025 collection Alongside Cragg’s work is Draco Piscis by Agnes Questionmark an artist who signs a large-scale temporary sculpture inspired by the Renaissance naturalist’s scientific imagination A symbol as much of the monstrosity projected by the collective unconscious as it is of the unexpressed potential of the ocean as a place of symbiosis and coexistence Draco Piscis is proposed as a reflection on the relationship between adaptation and environmental crisis The official opening of Agnes Questionmark’s work is scheduled for Sunday on the occasion of the first event of the Public Program of the Italian Pavilion of the Venice Architecture Biennale 2025 the International Sculpture Park will also host a performance by Thomas De Falco The day will also see the symbolic connection between the Banca Ifis Park and the Italian Pavilion within which the videos accompanying Draco Piscis will be screened emphasizing the dialogue between environmental art and contemporary languages In addition to the expansion of the collection the 2025 season will be enriched by new modes of enjoyment will be joined by extraordinary openings in the evening hours Visitors will be able to book access through the free Ifis art app available on both mobile devices and the web version This choice allows not only to extend the opportunities for visits but also to strengthen the experiential and participatory dimension of the Park enhancing its inclusive and sensory aspect all the sculptures in the Park have been accompanied by special captions in Braille language so that people with visual disabilities can also interact with the works through touch This is further evidence of Banca Ifis’ commitment to art that is not only contemplative capable of breaking down physical and cultural barriers The Park is part of the broader Ifis art project a cultural platform articulated in an art collection The Bank’s corporate art collection includes more than 100 works by more than 50 artists ranging from the Renaissance to contemporary art Curated by Giulia Abate and Cesare Biasini Selvaggi the Park represents the beating heart of the project in which the works find a natural location that is consistent with the environment that hosts them social and economic biodiversity through temporary initiatives An approach that focuses on the “economy of knowledge and social justice,” and that sees art as an agent of change capable of creating bridges between business A distinctive element of the project is the Ifis art app which allows a digital exploration of the works through unedited video content critical insights and interviews with artists the app represents an accelerator of fruition designed to engage even those with no specific training in the arts in collaboration with the Milan Polytechnic a measurement of the social impact of the International Sculpture Park From the data collected on a sample of 500 visitors a multiplier of 3.9 emerges: every euro invested by the Bank generates almost four euros of social value for the territory This indicator rises to 5.3 in the case of participants in the workshops organized in 2024 together with the Ministry of Culture
