Philadelphia’s Reading Terminal Market is one of America’s largest and oldest public markets
It began operation in a National Historic Landmark building back in 1893 and has become one of the city’s most popular tourist destinations along with the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall
it offers a wide and varied selection of locally grown & exotic produce
The historic public market also houses several restaurants under one roof
a reflection of the ever-growing diversity of the city
Today the Reading Terminal Market is one of the nation’s most successful public markets with more than 75 independent small businesses that offer an array of fresh and prepared foods
the market opened its doors and welcomed Tambayan
the founder and chef of Tambayan and Runner’s Sweets and Treats
felt that it was about time that a Filipino establishment opened in the market
where more than a hundred thousand Philadelphians and tourists pass through every week enjoying its exceptional products
Pinaglaban ko po talaga,” Mirano told the Asian Journal about her journey in getting a spot to showcase Filipino food and culture in Philly
Getting a spot for Filipino cuisine in the market is a full circle of sorts for Mirano
who has been working for 21 years as a manager and server at the Olympia Gyro
Mirano recalled that she walked inside the market more than two decades ago to find a job
She was working multiple jobs then to make ends meet
That’s how I started here in Philadelphia 26 years ago,” she shared
I walked down Reading Terminal looking for a job
Maybe I could find something a little bit better than cleaning houses and washing old people.”
After being out of a job for about six months due to the pandemic
She would then sell her products to her friends
kare-kare – became hits and her success inspired her to dream bigger
she submitted a business proposal to the market’s board of directors
She wanted to have a spot and sell Filipino food in the market
something that she knew had never been done before
“It was definitely not easy getting in,” she said
The runner-turned-baker-turned-restaurateur is not someone who retreats from challenges
as her more than 400 medals from different races including 16 marathons and an ultramarathon would prove
She went to a battery of interviews with the board members that ended with her letting them taste her creations
She made them realize that Tambayan was absolutely necessary for the City of Brotherly love
The board was impressed with her presentation and tasting and gave her the go signal
The entire process took about six to eight months before she got the approval
Tambayan has been open for more than three months now and Mirano is not about to rest on her laurels
She is taking her mistakes and lessons learned seriously as she prepares to break new ground
Batangas native said owning and operating a restaurant was not in her wildest dreams
my late father taught me the value of hard work,” she shared
“He also said always be proud of what you do and always be nice to people and proud of who you are.”
This is why she hopes Tambayan would be true to its name
a local hangout place where friends and family would spend time eating and sharing stories
She also hopes that Filipinos who travel to Philadelphia whether as tourists or as conference attendees across the street at the convention center would visit them
Mirano is enjoying the attention she has been getting from locals and tourists alike
She said she feels “very overwhelmed at times” because she didn’t really expect that locals and tourists in Philadelphia will embrace Filipino food the way they have done so
A lot of people come down and I don’t have food anymore but it’s a good sign for me as a new business owner,” she added
The Mathieu Mirano Spring/Summer 2013 presentation was an out-of-this-world experience
as models posed against a stark white backdrop of other wordly jagged white cones
The model’s make-up was kept to a bare minimum
and hair was slicked back into a plaited bun
It looked like you stepped onto a futuristic ice set
The models were placed on the circular set
held in The Box at Lincoln Center Monday night
Starting out in beautiful white with silver accents
the colour palette then moved onwards towards mustard
green and finished off with a sparkly combination of all colours
as not to take away from the amazing garments being worn
The only accessory shown was a chunky gold vertebrae bracelet
The collection consisted of a mixture of pleated shorts paired with matching turtlenecks and blazers
The finale of the show consisted of a white sequined cape with multi-rainbow yoke
the floor-length sequined cape was stunning

Just take a look at the inventive paper outfit she wore this week on Good Morning America to debut the "Applause" music video from her new album
The star stepped out wearing a custom design she collaborated on with designer Mathieu Mirano that included a warped white paper jacket
white paper bra and pant set and white paper gloves
Now there's a look that no one else will have
NEWS: Lady Gaga premieres "Applause" video
We're told that it took Gaga's team and the designer over 100 hours to complete
and was largely motivated by Gaga's desire to create something transformative
NEWS: Lady Gaga is opening the 2013 VMAs—get all the details
We think it's safe to say that Mathieu Mirano and Lady Gaga are quite the designing duo
What do you think of Lady Gaga's paper dress
PHOTOS: Lady Gaga's most bizarre looks
Mathieu Mirano has an eye for detail and a flair for showmanship
Walking into the presentation room in Lincoln Center
you immediately see the intense thought put into the design aesthetics of the room; it’s his clothing made art
Mathieu says of his room choices: “I wanted the presentation design to reflect and complement the clothes.”
Each piece has structured geometric elements
and precariously balances the fine line between unhindered design and manipulated artistry: fur coats with square mesh inserts
fitted leather dresses with chiffon draped flourishes
and boxy jackets that offer great subtle contrasts – it is distinctly menswear in shape
Even the shoes were triangular in formation
with gold toe detailing highlighting its particular shape
One of the stand-out pieces of the presentation was his fitted fox-fur jacket paired with a black pencil skirt, which is adorned with something completely out of this world, literally. For beading, Mirano says: “yes, they’re meteorites”.
Mirano’s most striking portion of the presentation
was not his clothing or his design aesthetic
which ranged the colour spectrum and provided a beautiful diversity to the show
it’s about taking the classic pencil skirt and updating it
It’s about seeing the glamour in everything and in every woman”
This is Mirano’s third collection, and when asked what is most stand-out for him about this year, he responded: “Just being here, being around my peers and people really appreciating my work…I’m just happy.”
Mirano’s eye for all-around detail and his ability to beautifully create head-to-toe pieces for the high-fashion minded
modern woman makes him someone to watch out for in the coming years

All sounds used were recorded in locations all over the Philippines
