was 17 years old in January of 1945 when he enlisted in the military — like many of his buddies from Youngstown — and went off to war after three months of boot camp and training
He was shipped to the island of Guam in the Mariana Islands in the Western Pacific in the spring of 1945 during the last months of World War II
for 15 months and believes he and his fellow sailors played a role in the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki that ended the war
got married and worked as an optician while earning a reputation as a good baseball player
Mirto was playing football at The Rayen School when he decided to enlist
His parents did not want him to play football because they thought he would get hurt
“They wouldn’t sign for me to play football
All of my buddies were going into the service
and that was the reason I went,'” Mirto said from the assisted living facility in Youngstown where he lives
They did sign for that after me doing a lot of talking.”
He and 42 other enlistees left Youngstown in January 1945
for basic training at the Naval Station Great Lakes
then was sent to Camp Endicott in Rhode Island for eight weeks of Seabees training
“Seabees were formally established on March 5
to meet the Navy’s growing need to build bases
camps and other structures as part of the war effort,” according to the uso.org website
where he shipped out through the Panama Canal to Guam
but the ship first stopped at Okinawa and Iwo Jima
We were attached with the First Marine Division
who were preparing us for the invasion of Japan,” he said
“That was the time we unloaded for the atomic bomb on Guam,” Mirto said during a recent interview
“We were not allowed to wear skivvy shoes
We didn’t know what we were handling
But that was being assembled there,” Mirto said
“We were supposed to leave Guam on Aug
16 to go to China with the First Marine Division
It so happened that the war ended on the 14th,” he said
The U.S Department of Defense website states President Harry Truman announced Aug
his unit was given a lot of cold weather clothing
but he was not going to need it because the war ended
but we were told it was a good thing the war ended because they said the harbor (in Japan) was so fortified
we would have never got in,” he said
“We were supposed to be the second wave in
When Mirto was asked how he knew that he and the other Seabees were handling atomic bomb related materials
He said he wrote letters to his mother in Youngstown while he was gone for his military service
He said he and the other Seabees did not know what they were loading and unloading from ships
but it seemed the military was especially concerned that sailors would not reveal anything they were doing on Guam because the mail Mirto sent home was “all cut up
My mother would write back and say they cut it out if I would say anything that would lead to something
I wasn’t allowed to say anything.”
He said he “wrote to my mother every day
I scribbled something because she would be nervous
She had to hear from me.” The letters were to his mother and father in Youngstown
His unit remained on Guam for about nine more months after the bombs were dropped on Hiroshima Aug
It was understood among military personnel on Guam that bomb related materials had come through Guam
“We knew it had to be dangerous,” he said of the materials they unloaded
before arriving at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco
He was discharged from the military on his birthday in July 1946
There were other dangers on Guam besides the hard work and the materials they handled
regained control of the island in July of 1944 from the Japanese after the Japanese had controlled it 31 months
One of the first things his unit did when they got to Guam was work to eliminate Japanese snipers who remained on the island in caves
“They were hiding all over the place
We had to go inside these caves to get them out of there
military) dropped leaflets over the jungle area stating to them strip down to the waist
He said one Japanese man snuck into line to eat in the American mess hall after he obtained the shirt of an American soldier that had been left outside to dry
He said the difference in appearance of the Americans and Japanese was not as great as one might think because the Americans had gotten so dark from the sun
but he did suffer hearing loss from “the sound of the 16-inch guns being fired on the ship,” he said
he used the GI bill to become trained as an optician
and worked in that field for many years for Youngstown Optical
He later worked for American Optical in the Sears on Market Street in Youngstown and later at the Sears in the Eastwood Mall in Niles starting in 1968 when the mall opened
He was manager of the optical department there for 25 years
He repaired Perry Como’s glasses one time when the singer played a show at the Palace Theater in Youngstown
Mirto worked in the optical business for about 40 years
managed and umpired baseball in the Youngstown area
he managed a Pony League team of 14-year-olds that went to the Pony League World Series
He joined the Struthers VFW and has been a member for about 70 years
He was inducted into Youngstown’s Curbstone Coaches Hall of fame in 2003 as a baseball manager and “one of the most respected umpires in the city,” according to a Vindicator article

Relive the wedding day of Prince William and Catherine Middleton
from the moment the guests arrive to the moment the new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace
Sixteen royal weddings have taken place in Westminster Abbey and the tradition goes back nine hundred years - to the marriage of Henry I and Princess Matilda of Scotland in 1100
It’s been ten years since His Royal Highness Prince William married Catherine Middleton at the Abbey on 29th April 2011
Here we look back on a very happy day in the Abbey’s history
and relive the wedding ceremony – a service watched by an estimated billion people around the world
There were seven months between the couple announcing their engagement and the day of the wedding
Here are some key dates in the run-up to the big day:
The Abbey’s doors are opened and guests begin to arrive – from official guests including members of Foreign Royal Families and government and Commonwealth representatives
to friends of the couple and figures from the worlds of sport and entertainment including David Beckham and Sir Elton John
around 2,000 specially-invited guests fill the Abbey

She starts her walk down the Abbey’s Nave to the High Altar, a distance of 97 metres, carefully making her way around the Grave of the Unknown Warrior – the only grave in the Abbey which is never walked upon

The marriage takes place in the Sacrarium upon the beautiful Cosmati Pavement
The service is conducted by the then Dean of Westminster
and the marriage solemnized by the then Archbishop of Canterbury
the Most Reverend and Right Honourable Dr Rowan Williams
O Thou Great Redeemer is sung by the congregation
a powerful and much-loved Welsh hymn often sung at State occasions
The Archbishop receives Catherine from her father’s hand
for poorer; in sickness and in health; to love and to cherish
according to God’s holy law; and thereto I give thee my troth
and grant that he who gives it and she who shall wear it may remain faithful to each other
and live together in love until their lives’ end
Prince William takes the ring and places it upon the fourth finger of Catherine’s left hand
Prince William: With this ring I thee wed; with my body I thee honour; and all my worldly goods with thee I share: in the name of the Father
the author of everlasting life: Send thy blessing upon these thy servants
they may surely perform and keep the vow and covenant betwixt them made
whereof this ring given and received is a token and pledge; and may ever remain in perfect love and peace together
and live according to thy laws; through Jesus Christ our Lord
The Archbishop joins their right hands together and says:
Archbishop: Those whom God hath joined together let no man put asunder
The Archbishop addresses the congregation:
Archbishop: Forasmuch as William and Catherine have consented together in holy wedlock
and have witnessed the same before God and this company
and thereto have given and pledged their troth either to other
and have declared the same by giving and receiving of a ring
and by joining of hands; I pronounce that they be man and wife together

The congregation sing the hymn Love Divine
a popular choice at English weddings and often voted one of Britain’s favourite hymns
It was sung at the wedding blessing of HRH Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles on 9th April 2005
It includes the words: ‘Let love be genuine; hate what is evil
hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honour.’
reads from St Paul’s Epistle to the Romans.Picture: Dean and Chapter of Westminster
a new anthem commissioned specially for the service by the Abbey from celebrated composer and conductor John Rutter
a beautiful setting of verses from the psalms with elegant melodic lines and warm harmonies
The Address is given by the Right Reverend and Right Honourable Dr
then Bishop of London and Dean of Her Majesty’s Chapels Royal
telling the couple: ‘Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire.’

which catapults him to international stardom

After the wedding, The Duchess of Cambridge returned her bouquet to the Abbey to rest on the Grave of the Unknown Warrior, joining a poignant tradition begun by Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923

Plymouth native Elyse Mirto’s almost 30-year acting career has been a thrilling roller coaster ride – a lot of ups and downs and never boring
she’s back on top again after receiving two top award nominations for her work on stage: the 2015 Ovation Award for Best Leading Actress in a Play alongside Laurie Metcalfe- best known for her work on the television show Roseanne: and the Broadway World Los Angeles Award for Lead Actress in a Play alongside Emmy-award winning actress Laura Linney
She’s also landed a recurring role on the Turner Network Television series
The Last Ship and hit the screen this year with guest roles on the ABC television series Scandal and the CBS series NCIS
“It’s been crazy and busy – not a rational career
It is a schedule that would challenge even Angelina Jolie
a classically trained actor who studied stage performance in London
My mother insists I’ve been saying I wanted to act since I was in preschool,” she laughs
Her journey as a performer did indeed begin early
She caught the acting bug as a student at Plymouth Salem High School
studying under well-known teacher and champion of theater arts Gloria Logan
A talented singer and dancer in addition to her acting skills
Mirto relishes her time on the stage as a high school student
I was getting the leads and just loving it,” she said
She moved on to Western Michigan University
She was awarded a scholarship to attend the Royal National Theatre of Great Britain
The achievement was even more meaningful because “I was the first music theater major even chosen for the scholarship,” Mirto said
explaining that there is an assumption that most music theater performers don’t have acting skills as well
“It was an amazing opportunity,” she added
appearing at the Goodman Theater and the Chicago Shakespeare Theater among others
Her work on stage in addition to television commercials helped her land a spot with one of the top talent agencies- sending her west towards the Hollywood television and film scene
I had experience and training and good reviews; I was getting parts
Landing parts almost immediately in a short-lived television series starring Jerry O’Connell and a role in a HBO movie featuring Ray Liotta
Mirto said her first thought was “I made it.”
she soon figured out that “there is no rhyme of reason to this business; there is very little rationality to this career.”
Although a healthy weight for her body size
casting agents continually urged the 5’7” Mirto to “lose 20 pounds.”
“It was very frustrating,” she adds,” I was not overweight at all.”
Mirto said she continued to land guest roles – Chicago Hope
But her determination for a career in acting was beginning to waver
A family crisis – the death of her brother
Christopher Mirto – sent her reeling in grief and on a journey toward introspection
“I started doing Yoga very intenselyand hiking for about six months.” Clearing her head she said
allowed her to start a path back toward her first love: acting on stage
for which she won the 2009 New York Innovative Theatre Award for "Outstanding Actress in a Lead Role." She followed that with another strong performance: she was also a 2010 nominee in the same category for her performance as Anna in the Workshop Theatre Company's production of Dana Leslie Goldstein's Next Year in Jerusalem
returning to Los Angeles in 2012 to play the role of Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing for the Kingsmen Shakespeare Festival
she has also managed to shoot three national commercials and record three audio books
but I also have learned that you need to be skilled
It has allowed me to be resilient,” she said
Mirto occasionally finds time to return to Michigan to visit her father Gary Mirto
a Milford resident; mother Karen Mirto Lowers
who lives in South Lyon and others friends and family
“I’m so lucky to have a family that has always been supportive of me

with production now more than doubling. It is fashionable these days to go on ‘a journey’
Contestants on reality shows like the ‘X Factor’ or ‘The Voice’ don’t have back stories
recall how you felt about the death of your first hamster and how it defined you
“They say that people don’t make journeys, but rather that journeys make people” are the words that greet you on the front page of the Ramón Bilbao website
The veteran Haro-based producer was established in 1924 and makes much of its creator
but the brand’s success probably owes as much to its modern messaging as its traditional roots
deftly managing to combine both to tell a compelling story
An actor playing Don Ramón in a recreation of his 1920s study: one of the most elaborate wine launches ever
the family business was sold to the Zamora Company – the conglomerate behind ‘Licor 43’
it has successfully applied some of the bold thinking that supports liquor brands to the more fusty world of wine
and Ramón Bilbao is striving to sell the vision and imagination of its founder
including some of his more eccentric ideas for transporting wine
to link the concept of a ‘journey’ to the enjoyment of a bottle of wine
And so it was that a small group of journalists were invited to an elegant apartment building in ‘the Mayfair of Madrid’
I’ve never been very good at harnessing my inner Ian McKellen
having once been ordered out of a BBC managers’ awayday for taking the piss during a role playing session
so I feared the worst as Don Ramón’s secretary invited us in
“The Don will see you now.” Our journey begins
she assured us that the great man was “very busy” as we were shown to his study
carefully reconstructed as it would have looked in the late 1920s
seemingly unaware of the noisy arrival of four journalists
three publicists and a couple of members of the marketing team
greeted us and began to proffer a vision for “wines that represent their origins”
we were asked for the small cogs sent to us in our elaborate boxed invitation
revealing an adjoining room in which we were asked to sit
it was starting to resemble the BBC kidnap training course
so I was relieved to discover the darkness was for another ‘sensory’ experience
allowing us to gently grope the terroir of the Rioja Alta
and breathe in the distinctive aromas of barrel rooms
the limited release premium vintage wine that is effectively a Gran Reserva with bells on
to be introduced by the modern incarnation of Don Ramón
Bastida talked about the importance of forging a distinctive identity
explaining to our mildly baffled group that Ramón Bilbao “always try to do things differently
Everyone offers a winemaker tasting for a new release
regular buyers and consumers were also taken on the ‘journey’
with a series of intimate visits across three days
with the actors hired for their impressive skills performing bi-lingually
Always ambitious: Ramón Bilbao’s wine director Rodolfo Bastida
named after the myrtle bushes that grow around the edge of the vineyards
with 11 vintage releases since its launch in 1999
with the most recent run of 39,000 a measure of its success
To give us a sense of the development potential of the new release
we were treated to a vertical tasting of three past vintages
and virtually impossible to get your hands on
1999 Ramón Bilbao Mirto has aged elegantly
with sweet soft leather and the skins of Jersey Royals on the nose
“Retaining acidity is very important for the perception of life,” Bastida told us
explaining that this particular vintage had been preceded by a bitterly cold winter
the absolutely outstanding 2004 Ramón Bilbao Mirto
fine dark chocolate and lower alcohol than you might expect at 13.6 per cent
2010 Ramón Bilbao Mirto is a young rampaging bull
but it shows great potential with its sheer concentration of fruit
Finally, the star of the show, waiting in the wings like Elaine Page in Cats, poised to blast out ‘Memory’, 2014 Ramón Bilbao Mirto (imported by Enotria and Coe
fermented with indigenous yeasts developed by the winery’s scientists
bottled three years ago and released this month
“It is technically a Gran Reserva in terms of ageing,” says Bastida
“but we didn’t want people to only think of it as that
as the vintage is more important.” The nose is a feast of foraged blackberry
all supported by grippy tannins and bright
vibrant acidity that delivers a wine that feels alive
it makes sense of a launch that was anything but traditional

Working for a legal aid provider out of college showed Mirto
that her destiny was a public interest law career
earning her degree from the University of Dayton School of Law in 1991
But it wasn’t until 2017 that she learned she’d end up turning the legal aid business model on its head—for the better
As executive director of Step Up to Justice
Arizona-based privately funded legal aid nonprofit
Mirto wields a shoestring budget and just three staff members armed with legal technology
They lead an army of volunteer lawyers in resolving low-income clients’ civil matters—mostly family law but also guardianship
You can’t remake the legal aid model without leadership from someone with vision who’s willing to take risks
She believes the nonprofit wouldn’t be successful without Mirto at the helm
and her work ethic is remarkable,” explains Butler
“Michele probably worked seven days per week our first full year.”
The Step Up to Justice budget—$215,000 in 2017—is 95 percent smaller than the average $4 million budget of a legal aid provider
which typically employs an average of 62 staff
Mirto’s firm provided $1 million worth of free legal services as its staff coordinated 114 volunteer lawyers to serve 1,000 clients—a 20 percent increase in civil legal services in Pima County
which is the cost of traditional legal aid providers
“Our staff is not in itself delivering the legal services
The technology fueling Step Up to Justice includes a case information system fed by a database about clients
Users log on remotely to create case notes and share documents without traveling to the office—giving lawyers more work time and clients less hassle
Mirto had worked for 22 years at Southern Arizona Legal Aid’s Volunteer Lawyers Program
“There really needed to be some structure in place to fill the gap in services in the community.”
Step Up to Justice’s private funding model frees it of the restrictions on undocumented clients and certain case types that federally funded providers face
It also gives the community a second provider to represent a client who is conflicted out of the traditional provider when they are already representing an opposing party
who worked under her at Southern Arizona Legal Aid from 2007 to 2012 and now volunteers as a board member at Step Up to Justice
“She’s one of these incredible people who has the ability to envision the future and come up with these new ideas,” says Burnett
“Because of the drive and vision and natural personality—how she is—it’s easy to work with her.”
“She wants a legacy in the community,” Burnett says
“that we made life better for all these people.”

After years dedicated to my professional career as a chef in a prestigious "Relais & Châteaux" hotel in French-speaking Switzerland
and having obtained a Michelin star in 2011
in 2018 I decided it was time for me to do something different
to step out of my comfort zone and pursue a dream cultivated since childhood: to travel around the world by motorbike
and traveled more than forty-nine thousand miles to reach Lima
I left with only a visa for Russia in my hand; the rest of the travel arrangements I made as I went along.
then on to the ocean in the west before travelling north along the coast
and then I moved on to Moscow and joined the famous "Trans-Siberian Highway” to Vladivostok
From here I shipped the bike by sea to Vancouver
and then took the Pacific Coast Highway down to California and on to Los Angeles
I continued on into Death Valley
reaching Las Vegas and following part of the famous Route 66 across the country
before turning west to Louisiana and on towards the Mexican border.
After roaming around Mexico for a few months
I crossed all of Central America to Panama
where I put the bike on a sailing ship to Cartagena
I headed south again in the direction of Ecuador
but day by day I would decide how far to ride
But to allow yourself the luxury of managing your time with no return date
And perhaps that’s what made the experience unique
my initial idea was to go "around the world" in eighteen months
but I soon realized that was no longer a priority
The original plan was to travel as far as southern Argentina and Tierra del Fuego
and then take the ferry to Africa before riding up the west coast to return home
I thought I would spend a couple of months there at most
but I actually stayed for four.
One of the places that fascinated me the most, mainly due to the road I traveled to get there, was Real de Catorce. A city located in the state of San Luis Potosí, Mexico, it lies 2750 meters above sea level
It can only be reached through the Ogarrio tunnel, 2.3 kilometers in length
But friends in the area showed me a secondary off-road track
the more winding it becomes and this is what makes it so spectacular
To travel this route we started from Matehuala and proceeded at full tilt to arrive in Real de Catorce
Although the trip takes just three hours and is not far
it’s a very challenging one because the route is extremely inaccessible
traveled by villagers with their mules or horses who are not always easy to avoid.

Mexico is a country rich in culture, perhaps the most interesting of those I’ve travelled through, also gastronomically speaking. Just think about when the Spanish conquistadors arrived and all the European influences they brought.
Then from March to June I was in Mexico and the weather there was quite warm, so I had the opposite problem. I clearly remember the stretch from Villahermosa in Tabasco to the Riviera Maya, where the bike indicated 121.1 °F under the sun, but once I got to the Pacific, one glance at the ocean and any difficulties were soon forgotten.
And you need little else; a few changes of clothes are enough when travelling, in fact, the more I traveled, the "lighter" I got. After several months you get a little wild and I certainly wasn't worried about having a hole in my shirt.
But a couple of years ago I saw A View from the Bridge and thought: Well
has my pendulum swinging back in the other direction
if for no other reason than for how dated the writing feels
It’s not simply that this story of estranged brothers finally confronting their collective history takes place in a bygone era
it’s that Miller himself seems straitened by the stiffest of dramatic conventions
Combined with International City Theatre’s traditionalist delivery
The Price feels like a relic from the World War II era
Victor (David Nevell) and his wife Esther (Elyse) have come to his deceased father’s home finally to sell off the family estate
his older brother Walter (Bo Foxworth) shows up
in the process of bargaining with an old furniture dealer (Gregory Solomon)
they review their mutually unsatisfying lives
wrestling with recriminations and resentments buried but unforgotten
with Miller slowly walking his characters from revelation to revelation
building toward a climax that isn’t a bit surprising and peppering us with heavy-handed metaphors
“When it comes to used furniture,” the dealer says multiple times
“you can’t be emotional.” See
he’s talking about more than just old furniture
And the price isn’t just about what money they’ll get for the estate
He never met a nail he didn’t keep hammering even after it was deeply embedded in the board
because it’s not like The Price is without substance
But it’s so full of itself on that score that it’s difficult to see people onstage rather than merely Miller’s mouthpieces. This is where director John Henry Davis and his cast might have helped Miller along
Played with the roughness of real conversation
they might have diverted our attention from the artificiality of the dialog
they highlight it with canned New York accents (Foxworth is the exception) and never letting the feel of real conversation mix into their line readings. But you can’t fault the cast for their preparation
with each character responsible for a good bit of speechifying
and all of the actors know their stuff backwards and forwards
I’d love to have a scene where something goes off the rails
because forcing them to react to the unexpected might have injected the show with a bit more life
The play’s arc is premised on the smoldering resentment between the brothers being kindled into an inferno
and Nevell and Foxworth are equal to the task
There is no American playwright more celebrated than Arthur Miller
But our enjoyment of art has nothing to do with any supposedly objective measure of how good it is
One of the biggest laughs at the performance I saw (this isn’t a funny play
but there’s a bit of humor) was in response to Victor’s complaint about how expensive movie tickets have gotten
and this fact had a good part of the house howling
but a lot of people love what is familiar to them. This may be the appeal of The Price
It’s is a head-on take on a barrel of issues that will be familiar to mostfestering family wounds
but no-one is in danger of missing the point
And with International City Theatre delivering Miller’s message with the most familiar of theatrical styles
you won’t be challenged by this show and maybe that’s the way you like it

-- He wasn't riding an Acme rocket or chasing a roadrunner
spotted at the former Fresh Kills landfill
Nick Mirto was delivering a truckload of soil to the 1-9 section
to finish capping the last spot at the dump
when he saw "something" to the left out his truck's window
about 30 feet from the road we just drove down," said Mirto
Mirto has seen "herds" of deer at the dump
and even two red foxes -- he spotted one just last month -- but this was his first coyote sighting
so he snapped a few photos with his iPhone
"I sent the picture to a friend of mine who hunts and he said
was in a field where tall grass recently had been cut down
"He looks very healthy," Mirto said
"There's plenty of food in there for him to eat."
an associate professor who serves as the extension wildlife specialist in the Department of Natural Resources at Cornell University and is the co-principal investigator for the New York Suburban Coyote Study initiated by the Department of Environmental Conservation
also confirmed that the photo is a "typical Eastern coyote."
There have been reports of coyote sightings in Long Island
Queens and even Central Park for the last six years or so
with well-established populations in southern Westchester County
which he attributes as the source for city $?'yotes
"It is just a matter of time before dispersing coyotes figure out how to cross the bridges at night and get onto [the Island]," Dr
"Juvenile coyotes may disperse 50 miles or more from where they were born."
so juveniles tend to leave in search of their own hunting grounds
and some coyotes tagged in Westchester have been shot by hunters as far away as Connecticut
"Coyotes can be dangerous to people and pets
and they should be treated with respect," Dr
"Small dogs [15 pounds] are at greatest risk
Coyotes will kill dogs in territorial defense
Very aggressive coyotes have even tried to kill small dogs while the owner was at the other end of a leash."
were bitten by a rabid coyote two years ago
and a toddler in a New Jersey yard was bitten about three years ago
The DEC has no records of coyote sightings on the Island
The odd coyote spotted in the Bronx is a solitary animal looking for food or shelter
Coyote sightings have increased in and around the city in recent years
and the DEC estimates there are between 20,000 and 30,000 coyotes living in the state
The DEC's website offers some tips to avoid any conflicts with coyotes and to keep your small pets from becoming lunch
but in a suburban setting they may lose that fear and begin to associate a human scent with food such as garbage
and should be considered dangerous if they are no longer "spooked" by people

just a little more than 12 hours after learning they no longer had jobs at the Branford
Kimberly Mirto and Morgan Vollero hit the pavement in search of work
‘when are you available,’ we’re writing ASAP for all of them,” said Mirto
After finishing her four and half-hour shift at Friendly’s Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
Vollero said she clocked out and headed home with no indication that the restaurant
“Nobody said absolutely anything about it,” commented Vollero
Vollero said she was shocked to find out about the restaurant closing for good via Facebook Sunday night
who had been with Friendly’s for about 18 months
before heading out to downtown Branford to put in applications at area restaurants
the girls said they stopped by Friendly’s to say goodbye to their former managers who were working to clean the place out
“You’re used to seeing it so bright and shiny and now it’s empty,” said Vollero
Friendly’s in Branford at 30 Leetes Island Rd.
was one of nine franchises closed without notice yesterday by the corporation
Guilford Friendly’s was closed at the end of 2011
The company filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in October
had been circulating around Branford Friendly’s about the store closing since the Guilford store closed
Mirto said she was under the impression that Branford would stay open as it was a top-performing store in the state – the performance measure of the restaurant could not be confirmed
“Since entering Chapter 11 in October 2011
the company has sought to work with our landlords to restructure lease arrangements at locations where we believed rents did not reflect current market conditions and were significantly impacting the viability of underperforming restaurants
While we were able to successfully restructure lease agreements for a number of locations
we were unable to reach an acceptable agreement for Branford
we have made the difficult decision to close this Friendly’s effective at the close of business on Sunday January 8th.”
Mirto, who is turning 18 today, said she was scared to be unemployed and shocked to receive the packet for filing for assistance
“I don’t even know if I am old enough to file,” she said
“to think of the adults that worked there and that’s how they pay their bills.”
the girls said the money they made during their 10-20-hour workweeks at Friendly’s went toward paying car insurance and for gas money
They are now looking for similar jobs with the hope to also save up for college – Vollero is hoping for a career in speech pathology and Mirto has her sights set on pursuing radiology
For now the girls think they would be best suited for jobs in the restaurant industry with experience at Friendly’s greeting
working the ice cream fountain and waitressing
they headed downtown Branford to put in job applications
After applying at they said they were headed to and to apply
“We have the experience scooping ice cream,” said Mirto who was hopeful that Ashley’s or Ben & Jerry’s would call her for an interview
The girls said they were two of about 30 to 40 employees of the Branford Friendly’s who lost their jobs yesterday
In thinking about the tough economy they could face after graduating high school
both girls said their first experience getting laid off was eye opening
“I don’t want that to ever happen to me with a real job.”

herbal liqueur from Sardinia made with myrtle berries
First step: find a landscape gardener or nearby hedge
I'd never even heard of mirto until I read Efisio Harris's Sweet Myrtle and Bitter Honey
is the best English-language cookbook covering Sardinia—home to one of my favorite cuisines of Italy
much the way ouzo or raki is served in Greece
And I finally got my chance at the James Beard Awards this past spring when I saw it on the menu at Craft
the liqueur tasted like a combination of gin and Fernet-Branca
So I did a little research. What's in mirto? Apparently, not much beyond myrtle berries and either honey or syrup. Huh. I could do that, I thought. It wouldn't be too different from my elderberry liqueur
Myrtle is not the crape myrtle you may be thinking of. Myrtus communis is "true" myrtle
and there is another drink called mirto bianco made from the flowers
Several years ago I tried to find myrtle—lots of Mediterranean recipes use myrtle's aromatic leaves and twigs to flavor grilled meats—but had failed
No one at the nurseries I'd visited knew anything about a "myrtle bush" other than the crape myrtle
But when I thought to ask for "Myrtus communis," they all said
But by then the rains had stopped for the summer and
Then, one day, while I was at my friend Elise's parent's house
That's a gigantic fucking myrtle bush!" Sorry for the language
but the myrtle bush alongside their house was 12 feet tall and easily 18 feet wide
and as I watched the blossoms turn into green berries
and the green berries turn into purple-black berries
Last week I couldn't wait any longer. I shanghaied Elise and her dad into picking myrtle berries, and soon I had several quarts—enough to make a batch for her, for me, and for my friend Scott at Sausage Debauchery; he said he'd kill me if I didn't make some for him, and Scott's a gigantic New York City cop, so I do what he says....
All I'm doing is filling quart mason jars two-thirds full with myrtle berries, then pouring over 100 proof vodka—I like 100 proof because a) I am a well-known boozehound, and b) you get better extraction of an herb's flavors with the higher alcohol content. Why not use grain alcohol? I suppose I could, but I'd like to drink this stuff eventually without going blind.
I'll let my mirto steep until Christmas, then strain it and sweeten it with honey. It should make a wonderful after-dinner drink on those cold winter nights.

friendly restaurant with a Sardinian heart but Metropolitan manners
the Sardinian beer with four Moors on the label
This is the sort of restaurant that seems quite at home on a stretch of the Fulham Road awash with 'neighbourhood' eating places
The menu is broken down in classical Italian style - antipasti
The antipasti ranges from pan-fried pecorino cheese with baked cherry tomatoes to an octopus salad with cardoons and celery in lemon dressing
a good foil for the richness of the aubergine and the minted fregola (which is a kind of pasta
each piece about the same shape and size as a single kernel of sweetcorn)
Antipasto Sardo brings a plate of cured meats - decent ham
some tapenade and a couple of kinds of cheese all on top of plenty of pan casarau (flat slivers of the extra-thin
extra-crisp Sardinian bread that's like a poppadom with attitude)
Onwards to half a dozen pasta options - linguine with velvet crab and tomato sauce
or spaghetti with bottarga (the intensely flavoured dried tuna row) or a really good risotto made with arborio rice and plenty of razor clams
such as marinated sardines with bay leaf and pine nuts
squid and swordfish - or baked sea bream with a sauce made from Vernaccia wine and green olives and accompanied by green beans - the fish served off the bone and accurately cooked
For dedicated carnivores there is a rack of lamb with roast endive
The wine list has plenty of Sardinian bottles that are worth exploring - look out for the ruby-red Cannonau
There are sebadas - a Sardinian speciality which are fried
sweet pastries rather like crunchy nonconformist ravioli
served with a Sardinian pudding wine called Anghelo Ruju to dip them in
There's a cheeseboard and there is a pistachio
The jury is still out on whether the addition of a bushel of nuts contributes anything extra
as the standard tiramisu works well on its own
Beware the Mirto - the liqueur after which the place is named - and double beware the Filuferru - a grappa named
after the lead wire used by farmers to mark hidden trap doors over illicit
Service is friendly and the food is honest
which makes Mirto a welcome addition to the scores of eateries on this stretch of restaurant gulch
