We are pleased to announce a strong team for the Vanoni mountain relay race taking place on 27 October in Morbegno
This is the first time England Athletics has sent a team to this prestigious and well established mountain race
The races consist of a relay format with a team of three men over a distance of 7.2km with a 435m climb
and two women racing over 5km with 248m climb
The prestigious nature of the event and iconic status at the end of the season offers an opportunity for high level competition over what is considered a very fast mountain running course
Team manager Sarah Tunstall is excited to see how our athletes tacklet this Italian 'classic' mountain running event:
"We hope the competition will provide a fantastic opportunity to race an Italian 'classic' as well as provide a development opportunity for our up-and-coming athletes."
After surgery for a major injury in January
George Foster has returned to fitness this summer with wins at the Canigou Double VK (vertical kilometre) in a championship record and local fell races including Skiddaw and Grisedale Horseshoe
"Being selected to race at this level for England is reward for the work that I have put in to get back fit and racing
and is my proudest achievement in the sport."
One standout highlight of Finn Lydon's running season this year would be the British short championships at Blisco where he spearheaded the race with Matt Knowles
He descended in a moderate fashion to take 5th in the end
Racing Vanoni in his first time representing England is important to Finn and something he's been aiming for
Felix McGrath's main highlights of the 2024 summer season include a 3rd place finish at the competitive Trail Half Hanner race - part of the Golden Trail UK series - and the Snowdon International where he finished 9th in the race overall and was the highest finisher in the open (non-elite) category
"The Trofeo Vanoni Relays will provide me with a great opportunity to compete with a strong England team against a high quality international field
and is an opportunity I am greatly looking forward to."
Matt Knowles recently won the Scottish University hill championships and English championship Race at Pike O’Blisco
He is also the senior British fell running champion
This will be Matt’s 3rd time racing at Trofeo Vanoni and he is looking forward to returning and representing England this year
Ben Sharrock ran for England's Senior team at the Snowdon International in July and finished 7th Senior (2nd U23) at the Blisco British short fell running championship
He is delighted to represent his country abroad with the opportunity to race in the Trofeo Vanoni event
This year Tom Spencer completed the Piz Tri Vertical and Fletta Trail
finishing 14th and 4th respectively in Italy
He also ran in Sierre Zinal in Switzerland coming 16th; his best race to date
and to do it as part of a team at the Vanoni Relays - a historic race known around the world - just makes it even more so."
Alice Crane was first U23 woman at the British mountain running championships and has been performing well in senior races all season
She is focussed on transitioning from junior to senior ranks and sees Trofeo Vanoni as an ideal stepping stone
Emilia Platt has turned her off-road strengths to the mountains and raced in the Golden Trail series as well as one of the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc races this summer
Last weekend she proved she is in great shape by winning the U20 English national cross country title
She is motivated and raring to go for Trofeo Vanoni
Emily Shaw has enjoyed her first season of hill running
She has experienced her first races in the Alps and is looking forward to gaining more experience at an international competition
This season Ellen Weir travelled to Portugal to compete in a World Mountain Running world cup event
She is excited about the relay format of the competition
Lex Whitaker has enjoyed a successful first senior season
representing England at the Snowdon International in July
She has also won the British and English U23 fell running titles and is looking forward to ending her season on a high at Trofeo Vanoni
Rosie Woodhams started the season with a torn calf but has recovered to place 7th at the Youth Skyrunning championship VK
finishing 3rd U23 at the UK inter-counties fell running championships
She has raced Trofeo Vanoni once before and remembers an incredible atmosphere
Rosie is looking forward to returning as part of a strong England team

Thomas Hilton and Harris Pagett have entered as an U20 Scotland team
Jonathon took the initiative to organise a junior team
Further Scots also racing in Morbegno are Ross Gollan
The British Fell and Hill Running Relays took place last weekend at Appletreewick
Carnethy HR finished second behind Dark Peak and Carnethy’s B team finished sixth to demonstrate the strength of the club (unheard of to have two teams finish in the top 10)
The Masters V40 team were third behind Calder Vally and Helm Hill
Carnethy B were eighth and Shettleston in ninth to make it three Scottish teams in top ten
one paired long leg and one paired navigation leg
There were fastest leg times for Andy Douglas (Westerlands) on leg one and Sasha Chepelin/Luke Fisher on the paired navigation leg
ITALY – Italy is known for its large cozy beaches alongside the Mediterranean Sea and its beautiful ancient capital
You may also heard about the Alps mountain range in the North because they are a favorite destination for winter sports of all kinds
This wealthy European country situated on the Apennine Peninsula has something to offer everyone the whole year
But my family decided to discover this country a little bit differently and spend one week in the mountains in the hottest season of the year
We visited Valley Val Masino on Sunday as our first trip in Italy
It seems to be a favorite destination for Italians from the cities
We saw many of them picnicking and enjoying the nice weather there at the end of the weekend
many glaciers on the high peaks have been melting and trickling water created many lakes
It is not unusual to find a lake in the altitude of more than 2,000 meters above sea level
Some of the lakes are modified for tourists and others simply have their natural beauty
Switzerland shares a border with Italy in the north so we decided to also spend a day in this alpine country
We had a beautiful view overlooking the town of Morbegno
we jumped into the lake and it was even better for swimming than the sea
The small city of Morbegno is full of tiny streets that look very ancient
You can see so many European and Italian flags
I highly recommend traveling to Italy‘s mountains not only in the winter
There you can discover the beauty of the northern region of the country mostly visited for its ancient culture and sea
The people in Northern Italy were generous and kind and the younger generation spoke comfortably in English
don´t forget to taste the world-renowned Italian pizza or spaghetti

The prestigious Trofeo Vanoni Italian Mountain Race race is held every October in Morbegno
The race is run as a relay over a distance of 5km/248m for women and 7.2km/435m for the men
A high level of competition is always expected and this year was no different with teams from; Scotland
Trofeo Vanoni has been twinned with the Snowdon International Race since 1980
with each event welcoming runners from the other town each year and founding long term friendships
It is an event like no other with a myriad of steep gradients
fast road sections and wall jumps - and as a consequence it features in the book of the "World's Ultimate Running Races"
An England Team of 12 athletes travelled to Italy on Friday afternoon
heading along the shores of Lake Como to Morbegno in the Valtellina valley. It was drizzly but atmospheric as we approached the mountains of Northern Italy
some of the team went straight to recce the course
returning with a mix of apprehension and excitement after seeing the unique course and all the varied terrain
The team was a mix of athletes who had raced Trofeo Vanoni previously and were returning for a 2nd
For others this was their first ever experience of international mountain racing. The aim was to provide an introduction to European style mountain running amongst a quality field in order to act as spring board for some of our most talented athletes.
The women's race is run as a 2-stage relay and a fast start saw Eve Pannone (Ambleside AC) to the front
She was running for the Snowdon team and led the field as they charged out of town in to narrow cobble alleyways
to the top of the climb before Sortini used her local advantage to edge the win in a time of 22:36 to Eve's 23:02. For England
Alice Crane (Dorking and Mole Valley AC) had a fantastic run
finishing in 4th position and in turn clocking the fastest U23 time of the day in 23:13
She handed over to the recently crowned English U20 National cross country champion Emilia Platt (Salford Harriers)
The other two lead runners on the England teams packed amazingly with Lex Whitaker (Ambleside AC) capping an already successful season after winning both British and English U23 titles
in a time of 25:35 and Rosie Woodhams (Kendal AAC) finishing strongly clocking 25:22 and placing 12th and 11th positions respectively
They handed to Emily Shaw (Edinburgh Uni Hare and Hounds) and Ellen Weir (Thames Hare and Hounds)
British athlete Emmie Collinge who also lives locally
in the Valtellina valley and is a former European Mountain Running Champion (2016) and World Silver medallist (2015) had teamed with Elisa Sortini and she continued to extend the lead over the field
Collinge clocked 22:12 at the line and recorded the fastest leg of the day to take the win for the local duo
former Mountain Running World Champion (2013) Alice Gaggi
Emilia ran an outstanding leg finishing in 23:29 to claim 3rd place overall
first U23 team and the individual 3rd U23 fastest leg
who is very new to mountain running saw her finish in 6th place
She clocked an individual time of 23:23 to take 2nd fastest U23 athlete
making it an England 1-2-3 on the U23 podium! Ellen ran strongly and also overtook numerous places on leg 2 to finish a fantastic 8th position
All three of the England teams were U23 athletes and raced amazingly well to all place in the top-10 rankings of such a competitive field
Afterwards they were delighted with their results and described the electric atmosphere in the crowd that lined the trail
It was like no race they had ever run before
They enjoyed signing autographs for the children who they had seen racing before them and had stayed to cheer the senior events
The men’s race is traditionally run in the afternoon
This meant they could support the women in the morning before turning their attention to their task in hand
The men’s event is a 3-stage race and England had a strong senior team and U23 team
The streets of Vanoni were busier than ever with hardly any space for front row spectating
but for the first time in the long history of Trofeo Vanoni a false start occurred
Amidst the confusion the runners covered approximately 2 minutes at a rapid speed before being recalled
George Foster (Matlock AC) and Matt Knowles (Lancaster and Morecambe AC) regained their composure and after the second
successful start were to the fore by the top of the climb with Matt - who has run here 3 times previously - in 6th with George just behind in 14th using his uphill strength to stay close to a cluster of Brits in front of him
On the descent Matt took two places to finish in 4th place clocking 30:47 which would end up being the fastest U23 time of the day
who has had a long lay-off from injury showed he is returning to fine form
maintaining 14th position in a time of 32:30
They handed to Tom Spencer (Cambridge and Coleridge AC) and Felix McGrath (Bristol and West AC) respectively
Tom has enjoyed a successful summer and has achieved good results in some European races already
including a fine 16th place at the famous Sierre-Zinal
in 5th position with Felix picking up a place to 13th looking really strong in the process
The positions remained largely unchanged on the descent with Tom crossing the line in 6th with a time of 31:32 and Felix running 31:25 but more importantly picking off a couple more spots to place 11th for the final change over
Leg 3 saw Ben Sharrock (Ambleside AC) take one place
climbing fantastically in 5th then descending in what can only described by the team managers as “heart in mouth” fashion
which nearly saw him overcook a tight corner but also meant he held off strong competition behind to run 32:17 and cement a brilliant 5th position overall and 1st U23 team
Matt mounted the individual U23 podium in 1st
For the seniors Finn Lydon (Carnethy Hill Racing Club) had a brilliant final leg
after starting in 11th he worked his way to 6th on the climb and - like Ben - produced a stunning descent amongst tough competition to defend 6th position to the finish in a time of 31:16
At the finish line supporters were now a few rows deep and the noise was exhilarating for the final straight
The atmosphere was incredible and despite the pain of racing at such unrelenting speeds
it was all smiles and fantastic camaraderie amongst teams who shared respect for each other's efforts of exertion on such a demanding course
Overall the entire England team performed fantastically
with team and individual performances above expectations
The fast and furious course did not disappoint and the crowds lining the course provided an unforgettable experience for all the athletes
The 'draw' of Vanoni was obvious and it left nobody surprised that runners return year after year to race on this unique and exhilarating course

a couple have turned to the Act_Romegialli studio for the renovation of an elegant house dating from the early 20th century
expresses a “delicate” but in no way timid attitude
one that aims to get the past to coexist with the present in this four-storey house (two of them underground)
and split into two apartments of different sizes
which reflect the couple’s passion for the open and luminous horizons of the sea
Originally divided up into clearly separate rooms
the spaces have been made more fluid so that the ground floor would be more brightly lit and acquire a lightness that brings the house closer to the aspirations and requirements of a new lifestyle
The living and dining area are now a single space
made dynamic by a difference in the level of the wooden floor that extends to the library as well
The succession of spaces is underlined by the white panelling on the walls and the unbroken ceiling stretching from the kitchen to the living area
White has also been used for the fittings with hand-painted mouldings
conceived by the designers in order to create a unity of style between the rooms
the presence of the kitchen can be sensed on the other side of a sliding wall of transparent glass
In the kitchen we find small inserts of materials from Sicily: a series of slabs of lava stone from Mount Etna glazed with mustard-coloured oxides (backdrop of the room) and the square of painted sheet-metal by the Agrigento-born and Linosa-based artist Piero Zambuto
The upper floor houses the sleeping area with two master bedrooms and a cosy and well-lit alcove for reading
“The intervention is oriented towards a decided reclamation of the original characteristics of the house
always maintaining a balance between historical memory and the contemporary world,” sums up the architect Gianmatteo Romegialli

Cerny (CCC) broke away from the leading group around 22km from the end of the 123km stage and the Czech rider managed to hold on to his lead to claim the biggest win of his career. Victor Campenaerts’s late attack was in vain as he finished second.
I dedicate this success to my team and my family
I cannot describe how I’m feeling right now.”
The stage was scheduled to run 258km from Morbegno to Asti but
the riders protested about racing so far in wet conditions one day after a brutal mountain stage
After organisers agreed to their demands the race started as planned but
the riders got on their team buses and were taken to a new starting point at Abbiategrasso
“I’m very upset about the way this has happened
It isn’t right,” said the Giro race director
“I think there are going to be some words with lawyers here
We think there [will] be consequences of the actions of the riders today
We knew it was going to be happening in October
A rainy day in October is quite a usual thing
the former Team Sky rider and now Eurosport pundit
“[It] was really bad publicity for our sport,” he said
“The temperature and the weather were good enough to do the full distance and they could have discussed way before if they were not happy.”
Wilco Kelderman kept the maglia rosa after finishing with the peloton which crossed the line nearly 12 minutes behind Cerny
Jay Hindley lies only 12 seconds off the overall lead
with Geoghegan Hart three seconds further back
There are two stages to go in the race which finishes in Milan on Sunday
Meanwhile, Sam Bennett sprinted to victory on stage four of the Vuelta a España
pipping rival Jasper Philipsen to victory as Primoz Roglic retained the red jersey on another gloomy day in Spain
View image in fullscreenSam Bennett wins for Deceuninck Quick-Step
Photograph: Kiko Huesca/EPAThe 192km flat route from Garray to Ejea de los Caballeros saw a four-man breakaway speed off after just two kilometres
they were reeled in by the peloton with 15km to go as the teams lined up their sprinters for a quick finish
In the closing stages UAE Team Emirates and Bora-Hansgrohe hit the front
with Philipsen launching 200 metres from the finish
Irishman Bennett went on the Dane’s wheel and won by a bike length to claim a third overall stage win at the Vuelta and a first of this year’s race
There was no movement in the general classification
with Roglic remaining in the race lead and Bennett’s compatriot Dan Martin five seconds back
Saturday’s fifth stage is the kind of rolling route which might favour a breakaway as the riders tackle the 184km stage from Huesca to Sabinanigo

A very original idea to promote his participation in Eurovision 2025
“Espresso Macchiato” is one of the most viral songs of Eurovision 2025
but at the same time Tommy Cash is one of the most controversial participants
The Italian in his song had initially provoked the Italians and then became a great success in the country’s charts
the Estonian rapper was a guest on Rai2’s show “Stasera c’ e Cattelan”
where he gave an interview and performed his song
Milanese were “treated” to an espresso macchiato by Tommy Cash
the 33-year-old Estonian was in Piazza Morbegno and served coffee with the slogan “Espresso macchiato please
The concept behind it was reminiscent of an election campaign
The artist stated that he feels that he represents both Estonia and Italy at the same time
since the theme of his song concerns Italian culture
Tommy Cash was in a very good mood and invited passers-by to drink coffee and be themselves
as part of the promotion of his participation
he gave a live performance at the May Day concert in Taranto
The Italians seem to have a great representation this year in the contest since in addition to Lucio Corso who represents the country
there is the participation of Tutta L’ Italia from San Marino and the humorous Espresso Macchiato from Estonia
Regardless of the position that Estonia will occupy
we must admit that Tommy Cash’s pr promo breaks the barriers of promoting participations in another country
View this post on Instagram A post shared by EurovisionCrave | Feim (@eurovisioncrave)
Espresso Macchiato has so far garnered over 4 million views on the official EBU channel + 15 million on Tommy Cash’s channel
while Estonia figures in the top 10 of the betting odds to win Eurovision 2025

Riders take buses to new start in Abbiategrasso after raising concerns over 258km length on Thursday evening
the longest stage of the race set to run 258km from Morbegno to Asti
was shortened to 124km after a rider protest at the start on Friday morning
The new start was taken from Abbiategrasso
which would have been passed 134km into the original stage.
Follow the situation in real time with our live stage 19 coverage
RCS Sport had announced an additional 5km would be added to the 253km-long stage due to a bridge collapse in Candia Lomellina
prompting riders to question the logic of such a long stage.
with riders continuing to talk through the situation with CPA rider association representative Cristian Salvato
race director Mauro Vegni and UCI commissaires before the start in Morbegno.
It is understood that the riders were unhappy about the length of the stage so late in the third week of the Giro after a final week of long stages and early starts
as well long transfers before and after stages
Pouring rain and 11c at the start as the final straw for many riders
who sheltered in the VIP tent at the start area.
After talks and some kind of an agreement to cut the length of the stage
the peloton rolled out from Morbegno 10 minutes later than scheduled
eventually stopping after 8km of the route on an empty main road to wait for team buses ahead of the transfer to the new start
The move comes after riders had complained about the length of transfers earlier in the race, with Groupama-FDJ's Jacopo Guarnieri taking to Twitter after stage 16 to San Daniele del Friuli to say: "So
6 hour 30 by bike and ends with another 2 hour 30 by bus
At least you have an idea why we don't make fire and flames from km 0."
At the start of the stage in Abbiategrasso
calling the situation "a disaster" and even threatening legal action
"I have to say I'm very upset about the way this has happened," he said.
"I think there are going to be some words with lawyers here because I don't think it has been a respectful way to the race
and I think there has been no real respect shown to everyone involved on the rest of the stage
"We think that there will be consequences because of the behaviour of the riders today
I don't think there really are excuses for them not to do it today
Whoever brought these proposals needs to show proof it was discussed last night otherwise I will get lawyers involved."
The concerns over stage 19 are far from the first rider welfare complaint at the 2020 Giro.
Earlier in the race, riders complained about the state of the race's anti-COVID-19 'bubble'
with Jumbo-Visma's Jos Van Emden noting that neutral service
police and the general public were mixing with multiple teams in race hotels
Stage 4 was marred by a crash at the finish after a RAI television helicopter blew barriers into the road
taking out Vini Zabù-Brado-KTM riders Etienne Van Empel and Luca Wackermann
with the latter forced out of the race as a result
The race will restart from Abbiategrasso (MI), keeping active all the intermediate sprints from there on.La corsa ripartirà da Abbiategrasso (MI), mantenendo attivi tutti i traguardi volanti da lì in poi.#Giro pic.twitter.com/0F3JYp3UZROctober 23, 2020

There’s no shortage of excellent ham in Madrid, but the salty, gamey slices on offer at La Garriga are some of the best in town. Keep it simple with a bocadillo (sandwich) of jamón Serrano or jamón Ibérico de Bellota, a special variety made from free- range, acorn-fed pigs. The hanging pork legs on display may inspire you to pick up a few extra rashers to go. LB lagarriga.com

Run by Dietmar Rogacki, grandson of the original owners, this Berlin institution is a sprawling emporium selling cheese, game, poultry, sausage, bread, salad… It’s all delicious, but Rogacki, which started as an eel and fish smokehouse back in the late 1920s, remains rightfully famous for the more than 70 types of fresh, smoked and live fish it sells, from classic rollmops to smoked eel and swordfish. Home > Caffineria – two popular places in NoLo and close to the Martesana
Because after they opened the first Caffineria in NoLo
a year ago the second location opened in the Martesana area in Milan.
My first encounter with La Caffineria was by coincidence
While walking through the NoLo neighborhood
I decided to have a coffee break in Piazza Morbegno
While most of the places open only for aperitivo
Also this one not to far from my home in the Martesana area
The pictures in this article are taken there
Soon enough I decided to come here regularly. When I have a breakfast at la Caffineria
I always enjoy a good coffee (for me a cappuccino
per favore) and a brioche from the Pasticceria Giacomo
So having breakfast here means that you can handle the rest of the morning without any problem
If however you like to have an alternative to the ‘everyday’ brioche
you can also decide to order a muffin or one of the varieties of brownies they have on offer. By the way
since the bars re-opened after the COVID-19 lockdown
both the places of la Caffineria have some seats outside too

The Alps of the Trentino Alto Adige region in northern Italy was the extraordinary backdrop to the AFM's C (SD) Company's month-long training attachment with the Morbegno Battalion of the 5th Alpini Regiment stationed in Vipiteno
Following their arrival in Italy nearly a month ago
the Maltese platoon was incorporated in the Audace Company which was then conducting training in peace support operations in preparation for its deployment to Bosnia in June
The multi-phased intensive training schedule spanned over four weeks and included vehicle checkpoint and convoy drill training
advanced patrolling and anti-riot training
The training of the Maltese soldiers with a unit that has participated in so many humanitarian operations overseas proved to be very beneficial
It said that the Italian troops demonstrated a practical approach to problem solving derived from their vast experience
they appreciated and learned from our soldiers' solid theoretical grounding apprehended from their British and American trained officers and senior non-commissioned officers."
The training attachment was made possible through the hard work of the infantry section within the Italian Military Mission stationed in Malta
C (SD) Company forms part of the AFM's 1st Regiment commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Raphael Farrugia
