Fortunately, we have a strategy at our disposal, crafted in collaboration with CGIAR Plant breeders worldwide use the latest crop breeding techniques to develop varieties that are more nutritious To maximize the adoption of these improved crops they need to ensure new varieties meet the specific needs of their target production environments and market Defining market segments and developing Target Product Profiles (TPPs) that document the collection of key traits required for a variety to succeed in a particular market segment enables breeders to prioritize their efforts and ensure products from their breeding pipelines are tailored to the local environment and have the highest chance of adoption In order to define market segments and target product profiles for key food security crops in Uganda such as maize, cassava, yam, bananas, sweet potatoes, and common beans, NARO breeders, together with CGIAR Initiative on Accelerated Breeding and regional crop breeders conducted a series of crop specific product design team (PDT) meetings a broad range of stakeholders and value chain actors including farmer groups discuss the current and future needs of crop varieties and formally agree on national market segments Target Product Profiles and breeding priorities more than a dozen unique market segments were identified for staple crops in Uganda maize segments were primarily aligned with target environments incorporating a combination of plant types and consumer preferences for grain size and color Each segment has its own specific trait requirements NARO maize breeders now rely on these TPPs to guide their work—choosing parent plants for breeding and selecting varieties to advance based on how well they align with the TPPs This structured approach is expected to accelerate the development of crop varieties that meet market demands more effectively NARO sweet potato breeding team is already using its Target Product Profiles to guide its breeding efforts focusing on traits prioritised by both farmers for domestic food security and industry for commercial use Key traits that are critical for food security include disease resistance industrial processors seek varieties suited for bread production or manufacturing products like juices This renewed focus on two distinct market segments has been made possible by organizing inclusive PDT meetings bringing together both farmers and processors shaping breeding priorities rice and groundnuts are now using this design approach to develop new crop varieties NARO breeder in a nursery at Namulonge station With support from CGIAR Accelerated Breeding Initiative and regional CGIAR breeders from International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT), International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and International Potato Center (CIP) NARO has undertaken assessments of crop breeding programs Each NARO breeding program has undergone such an assessment which has led to the development of a customized improvement plan and a tier rating that reflects the current scope of breeding pipelines operations The customized improvement plans typically include 20 to 30 key recommendations that can be achieved within the short to medium term These recommendations are aimed at significantly accelerating the improvement of variety traits through breeding Recommendations typically cover various aspects of breeding including use of specialized equipment and tools process management and adoption of modern breeding methodologies They are intended to enhance our effectiveness and the quality of our breeding efforts while also assisting us in targeting investment cases to address gaps identified in the process NARO have used these assessment reports and improvement plans to secure support for program modernization from the Crops to End Hunger program (CtEH) and increased breeding operation funds from the Accelerated breeding initiative two major NARO breeding stations are undergoing a major infrastructural upgrade that will significantly enhance lab and field activities through investment in digital equipment seed storage and processing infrastructure and irrigation improvement plans have highlighted the need for human capacity development through training of NARO scientists in new NARO scientists have already benefited from training in equipment and breeding operations and anticipate further training in genomic breeding this will empower NARO to assume greater responsibility in the international breeding effort NARO breeder in a trial field at Namulonge station in Uganda Collaboration across borders is essential in shaping the future of agriculture That is why is it essential to harness the power of regional breeding networks that are being facilitated by Accelerated Breeding Initiative One of such networks is the Eastern and Southern African Maize Breeding Network facilitating knowledge and germplasm exchange but also a community of practice and a tribune where the insights of the Product Design Teams are discussed to align regional breeding strategies Access to advanced breeding tools and shared facilities at the regional level, like CIMMYT doubled haploids facility reduces the time required to develop homozygous maize lines to just over one year instead of three to seven years using more traditional inbreeding methods significantly reducing development time and cost All in all, our collaboration journey with CGIAR, which began with the Excellence in Breeding (EiB) program in 2019 and later transitioned into the Accelerated Breeding Initiative has been extremely beneficial to NARO we’re achieving more with less while increasing adoption rates of new varieties NARO remains committed to advancing breeding operations in Uganda and expanding deployment of new tools and methodologies to other crops Through training initiatives and strategic partnerships we aim to further enhance improved crop quality These efforts will benefit benefits Ugandan farmers and consumers and this agricultural development will ultimately also contribute to national economic growth Hackman hopes the collection attracts students, faculty and researchers alike, while also tapping into the community equity the name “Naro” has long enjoyed in the Ghent and Larchmont sections of Norfolk Hackman also wants the collection to establish ODU Libraries as a major source of film-related research on the East Coast. In addition to providing one-of-a-kind sources for academia, research and community engagement in the form of screenings and festivals he hopes the collection will attract future film-related gifts like its recent acquisition of screenwriter Arnold Schulman’s papers Another highlight of the collection lies in the availability of video resources to professors and students “If a student was interested in conducting research on filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock the Naro collection features his entire catalog,” Cooper said But at the same time, “it’s more than the academics,” McGreevy said, highlighting the importance of older movies and foreign films in the collection. “I think it’s incredibly important for people to stretch their imaginations and their experience through these films.” Since many of the films and series included in the collection are not available through streaming it also features a section called “Unstreamable,” that is hundreds of titles deep like the Kevin Smith religious spoof “Dogma,” are wrapped in legal entanglements such as the anime classic “Vampire Hunter D,” have lapsed distribution rights Others are “too provocative for sedate streaming sensibilities,” said Kris King a curator for the NARO Video @ ODU Libraries Pier Paolo Pasolini’s “Salo” and Todd Solondz’s “Happiness.” “All of these titles are essential pieces of cinema under real threat of being lost in the switchover to direct digital distribution,” King said Amid the rampant digitization of media and efforts to police content collections like Naro Video @ ODU Libraries take the opposite approach McGreevy spoke of a German film titled “Taxi zum Klo,” which openly depicts a gay man and prompted a visit from the police when the film was shown at the Naro Theater in the 1980s “Taxi zum Klo” is also part of this collection “While I love the ease and convenience of streaming,” Hackman said “I’m also growing increasingly frustrated by its ephemeral nature and concerned that large parts of our collective artistic heritage could be lost at any moment due to a corporate merger a lapsed contract or even a technical glitch.” To that end, ODU faculty, staff and students can check out materials from the Naro collection with their University ID card. Community members can join Friends of the ODU Libraries for $50 (individual) or $100 (family) a year to check out up to three movies per week. The library also rents out DVD players Beyond the academic benefits, preserving the experience of renting videos for the Hampton Roads community was of paramount importance to McGreevy and Cooper “We could have sent the collection to NYU,” said McGreevy that’s too far away.’ It’s nice to be at NYU but that doesn’t help anybody around here.” With the collection now available to the public for the first time in years all involved hope the interest and the access leads to future fundraising opportunities more film festivals and more contributions from the greater film community physical media will see a similar resurgence Naro Video @ ODU Libraries is more than just a window to the past “Nothing ever completely goes away,” said McGreevy Source: zionfelix.com « Prev Next » Comments (3) Listen to Article Frank Naro Thanks for visiting The use of software that blocks ads hinders our ability to serve you the content you came here to enjoy We ask that you consider turning off your ad blocker so we can deliver you the best experience possible while you are here Mark Your Naro Calendars for the next free Naro Minded film screening set for Tuesday March 26 at ODU's Michael and Kimthanh Lê Planetarium Please join ODU Libraries for THE UNKNOWN COUNTRY (2022) lyrical road movie through flyover country – all anchored by a delicate performance by Lily Gladstone (earning honors at the 2023 Gotham Awards) will join us virtually for a discussion on the film – to be moderated by ODU Film Studies professor Najmeh Moradiyan-Rizi Tana (Lily Gladstone) is pulled back into the world by an unexpected invitation to her cousin’s wedding She packs up her late grandmother’s Cadillac and hits the open road driving from her home in Minnesota to South Dakota… A personal reverie summoned from a beguiling mix of fact and fiction The Unknown Country is an arresting debut feature from Morrisa Maltz.” - The restaurant features subtle seafood and vegetable dishes made with prime ingredients It wasn’t on their mind to open a third restaurant, but when Atomix co-founders Junghyun “JP” and Jeongeun “Ellia” Park got the call to pioneer the rebrand of Rockefeller Center as a destination for elevated dining Tishman Speyer reached out in January 2021 to see if they’d be interested in a spot among restaurants from other high-profile chefs like Estela’s Ignacio Mattos and Frenchette’s Lee Hanson and Riad Nasr; how could they turn it down As part of the revival of an iconic Manhattan neighborhood, Naro has been one of the most anticipated openings of the season the nearly 60-seat restaurant unveils a fresh perspective on Korean food in NYC — one that dials in subtle flavors while highlighting seafood and vegetables Naro has double the number of dishes — 25 for the opening — of either Atoboy or Atomix and price points that hover between those restaurants there’s a tasting menu for omnivores and vegetarians ($85 to $195) while the indoor terrace with a view of the ice rink features an abbreviated prix fixe The most casual option in the lounge offers bar snacks and dishes a la carte Lunch caters to the heavy foot traffic in the area and launches with five-course ($95) and two-course ($50) menus “People have this misunderstanding about Korean food,” says Junghyun his menu digs into varied aspects of life in Korea: jesa (annual ancestral ceremonies) and royal-court cuisine of the Joseon Dynasty “I want to bring that aspect of Korean food to New York,” he says For instance, Junghyun’s version of bibimbap features shellfish — not beef, which is more common — and is served without gochujang. Radish greens are cooked with Golden Queen rice and topped with slabs of grilled Norwegian king crab 10 kinds of vegetables like kohlrabi and minari (water parsley) features tofu dumplings wrapped in thin slices of aehobak a light green Korean zucchini with a soft peel The soup bobs with chunks of steamed abalone departing from its more popular Korean preparation as rice porridge Korean food is naturally loaded with vegetables and fruits — like yuja (yuzu) and mungbean sprouts — that aren’t always recognized by NYC diners Junghyun hopes to change that by putting them front and center in Naro’s vegetarian tasting menus Naro is the first entity created under the Parks’ Naeun Hospitality group While Junghyun and Ellia are the founders of Naro they’re leaving it in the hands of staff from their prior restaurants — executive chef Nate Kuester and general manager Einstein Park — to run the show day to day Naro is open for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and dinner from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday in the main dining room only with reservations via Resy Terrace and bar seating will open later for walk-ins Caroline Shin is a Queens-raised food journalist and founder of the Cooking with Granny YouTube and workshop series spotlighting immigrant grandmothers. Follow her on Instagram @CookingWGranny Kathy Naro has had a highly successful run as Beaverton's girls basketball coach since 2017 going 124-34 in six seasons and leading the Beavers to their first state championship with all three of her daughters playing in college Naro has informed the school that she plans to take a “temporary break from coaching.” In the meantime “I'm going to take a year and see how I feel,” she said So I feel like it's not a permanent step away It was a tough decision but I feel like it was the right one.” Beaverton will graduate four starters from a team that went 19-10 and lost in the 6A quarterfinals Those same four players – including the Naros' daughter point guard Madison Naro – were starters on the 6A title team in 2022 Madison Naro has signed to play at Santa Clara are coming off their junior and sophomore seasons “This past year I was really feeling conflicted,” Kathy Naro said “My oldest daughter is entering her fourth year at Boise State and I've hardly seen her play “I've been teaching and coaching for a long time so I was feeling like it was time to take a break and kind of spend more time with my family I'll have more time to spend with my parents and be able to watch my own girls who played at Aloha and Southern California College (now Vanguard University) first began assisting Kathy during her first tenure as the coach at Jesuit where she went 305-76 in 14 seasons (1995-2009) He also has assisted with the Aloha boys and Sunset girls Kathy said she will be available to help John but wants him to feel free to make his own decisions “He's always had a desire to have his own team,” Kathy said even if it's just filming up at the top of the gym I really don't know how that will play out I think it's good if he starts it the way he wants to start it and I can just fill the gaps where he wants help I want to be very respectful of just supporting him John said it will be difficult for Kathy to stay away “The great thing is I can bounce ideas off her,” he said but I think she is by far one of the best coaches I've been around If people ever came and watch her run a practice 'Holy cow.' I always tell her she should be coaching in college or higher.” Beaverton must retool after losing three Division I college recruits in Madison Naro Lainey Spear (Portland) and Zoe Borter (UC Santa Barbara) “I've got to figure out how to score,” John said “I'm losing probably 85 percent of our scoring We've got a good group of kids coming back I have three freshmen coming in that I think will get a lot of playing time on varsity.” Kathy said that she and John have “fallen in love” with the Beaverton community “It's just an amazing group of people to be a part of,” she said So it's natural for him to just take over and finish with this group of seniors.” BOISE – Rick Adelman is a Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer who coached for 23 seasons in the NBA and has the 10th most wins (1,042) in league history But for Boise State women’s basketball player Mary Kay Naro The 5-foot-11 junior point guard has quite the family pedigree Both her parents played college basketball Kathy Adelman Naro (Portland) and John Naro (Vanguard) also coached Naro and her two younger sisters at Beaverton High School in Oregon Mackenzie is a sophomore guard for the Broncos while Maddie is a senior at Beaverton and just committed to Santa Clara Uncle David Adelman is an assistant coach with the Denver Nuggets a starter the last two seasons looking to carry on the family name for the Broncos who open the year hosting the College of Idaho in an exhibition at 6:30 p.m “Basketball is something that connects all of us together,” Naro said “So it’s pretty cool that it’s extended for so long throughout our family It’s nice to have so many different family members you can go to and talk to about different stuff and give advice Naro was introduced to the family business early on Naro and her sisters were constantly on the sidelines dribbling basketballs while their parents had games or ran practices Naro got her start with the local YMCA league And then meeting NBA stars like two-time reigning MVP Nikola Jokić 8-time NBA All-Star Yao Ming and Cleveland Cavaliers point Ricky Rubio “I remember Ricky Rubio coming up to me one time and he’s like ‘You have really blue eyes.’ And I remember going like ‘Oh my God he said something about me,’” Naro said with a laugh “Just getting to be a part of that is really cool Naro ended up turning into a three-time All-Metro League player had Beaverton in the midst of a state title run with a 23-4 record and in the Class 6A semis before the coronavirus pandemic canceled the tournament It all got the attention of Boise State head coach Gordy Presnell “I remember Kathy playing at the University of Portland She was a really good player,” said Presnell about the school’s all-time assist leader “The first time I saw Mary Kay play was in Chicago at Nike Nationals and I thought she was really good (too) Just long and athletic and has great quickness.” Naro took an unofficial visit her junior year and had a great time despite running out of gas on the way home John had always bragged about being the family’s best driver and nothing bad ever happened with him behind the wheel the car began stalling before John pulled the car over to the side of the road right in front of a gas station sign that read “1 mile to gas station,” of all places he still had cell service and called the nearby gas station An attendant drove out with a gas can filled up and John was so grateful that he handed him a crisp $50 bill “We always bring it up,” said Naro with a grin so I send it (picture) to him every year.” Naro has had more memorable experiences associated with Boise State She started all 23 games as a freshman during the 2020-21 season and led the Mountain West in assists (119) and finished second in assists per game (5.2) She also set the single-game assist record at Boise State with 16 in an 87-69 win over Utah State on Feb “I definitely did come in here knowing there was a chance to fight for some playing time but I was not expecting for it to be as much as it was,” Naro said So it’s been really cool to get the opportunity to play here and to do some special things.” Naro averaged 8.8 points per game last season as a sophomore and had a team-high 106 assists in 29 games She gives most of the credit to her family John and Maddie just helped Beaverton win the first state title in program history in the spring Mackenzie is living out an unexpected dream. She had some offers from smaller schools but decided to follow her sister to Boise State Mackenzie still wanted to be around the game So she was a team manager for most of last season Presnell asked her if she still wanted to be a college basketball player She played in seven games and her first collegiate bucket came on a corner-3 against Air Force on Feb.15 It’s nice to have that person that you’re so close to that you can talk about stuff and do things with,” Naro said So I think it’s just been a great opportunity for her and I’m happy she did it.” David flies out to games whenever he can and takes her to Nuggets’ practices and games whenever the Broncos are in town And Rick watches and analyzes every one of her games on film which Naro applies to the next game or practice “The love of the game has just been handed down “I hope she has a great year because of just all that she puts into it incredible desire to win and an incredible passion to try to get our season turned around this year.” Boise State is coming off a rare 8-21 campaign It was the first losing season in a decade and the worst in Presnell’s tenure Eight of the 21 losses came by five points or less and the Broncos were 1-11 in games decided in the last minute and a half They ended the year with a seven-game losing streak The Broncos return four starters and three others who saw significant time from last season They also have a talented freshmen class that include two state players of the year and  a bronze medalist with the U20 Australian National Team Just two years removed from a fourth straight Mountain West Tournament title and a March Madness appearance the Broncos were picked seventh in the preseason media poll “We’re coming in and people don’t expect us to be anything and we have a chance to prove people wrong,” Mackenzie said we’re not seventh.’ I think once we start playing we’re just gonna use that as a motivator.” But Naro doesn’t need any more added motivation She has a family legacy to continue on after all “He’s (Rick) has done so many amazing things, I’m just a little piece of it. But it’s really cool to carry that on and do something our family loves,” Naro said. “I think it’s really special for him to get to watch us and we’re following the same path as him. It’s just something that I’m really proud to be a part of. It’s just really special.” You must be logged in to post a comment Phil Naro, a local musician who played with some of the biggest rock stars of the '80s and '90s, has died. His family announced his passing in a statement posted to Facebook Monday "Phil fought a valiant battle against cancer over the last few years but left this earth last night, surrounded by his family and closest friends," the family said Naro was perhaps best known as the lead singer of the Buffalo-based band Talas which toured with many of the '80s top hard rock attractions 1958. He started playing in local bands when he was just 15 landing gigs at local clubs like the Penny Arcade while he was still a student at Eastridge High School in Irondequoit "I think music was in his blood," said Mr Naro's friend and high school classmate Dan Derleth.  "It was something that he aspired to He found a place where he could go and be himself." More: Obituary for Philip Sampognaro, "Phil Naro" Naro moved to Toronto after graduating from high school answering a newspaper advertisement for a band seeking a singer.  He joined that band That led to an invitation to join Talas, which toured the U.S. and Canada for three years nonstop.  Bandmate Billy Sheehan described Mr. Naro as "one of the finest human beings I have ever known … a dear friend The band reunited in 2019 and was working on a new album which is scheduled to be released later this year "Phil fought like a champion and brilliantly performed and completed vocals for the album in spite of shouldering the knowledge that he was in a serious health situation," Sheehan said "He fought a valiant battle until the end and inspired all who knew him to stay positive and keep going against all odds." Naro was a prolific performer and songwriter often collaborating with other artists.   "Phil was one of these guys that bands sought out," Derleth said Naro's work ethic and talent were apparent but it was his four-octave vocal range that stood out "He could do ballads as well as heavy metal stuff," Derleth said "He was like a chameleon. He could change his voice and intonation to fit any style." One of his performances even won an Emmy Award: the theme song for the animated comedy series "6teen." In between his time with other bands and solo projects "Some people in the industry wondered why I chose to work in tribute projects when I already had a career as a national artist doing original material," Naro told the music website Brave Words "The reason was simple: it kept me working six nights a week in markets like Toronto and other major cities That was the best exercise I could give my voice Naro helped form The Platinum Rock All-Stars with former members of popular '80s bands.  It includes drummer Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge Cactus), guitarist Ron Bumblefoot Thal (Asia Guns N Roses), bassist Tony Franklin (Whitesnake The Firm) and keyboardist Geoff Downes (Yes “We have only played a handful of shows together because of everyone’s hectic schedule but I really love working in the All-Stars," Mr "Collectively the members have sold something like 130 million records and we play all the hits of the groups that they came from we have a blast and so does the audience.” Naro is survived by two sons, James and John; his mother A celebration of Phil's life will begin at 1:30 p.m Face coverings and social distancing protocols are required The service will be livestreamed at www.holyspirit-saintjoseph.org/online-ministries Donations may be made to the Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation-Team Zach VA 23113 (http://weblink.donorperfect.com/PhilNaro) People are asked to visit www.profettafuneralchapel.com to share a memory of Mr Sean Lahman is a watchdog reporter for the Democrat & Chronicle, part of the USA Today Network.  Contact him at slahman@gannett.com and follow him on Twitter @seanlahman « Prev Next » Comments (2) Listen to Article Frank Naro workers hauled hundreds of boxes from two storage units on Colley Avenue to Old Dominion University's Perry Library Inside those boxes were over 42,000 movies and television shows the entire collection of Naro Video — a video rental store in Norfolk's Ghent neighborhood — one of the last of its kind on the East Coast when it was obvious that Naro Video couldn't survive another year owners Tim Cooper and Linda McGreevy had to make a hard decision on what to do with the inventory they ultimately chose Old Dominion University Libraries as the new holder McGreevy has long-standing ties with the University She spent 34 years as a professor in ODU's art history department and at one point served as the department chair ODU agreed on their vision for the collection's future including making the films accessible to the community "We just couldn't let the community that loved us so much and were so happy with us The Naro collection will increase ODU's physical film offerings sevenfold was that we would be getting access to titles that are not widely held in libraries." Stuart Frazer assistant professor in ODU's Department of Communication and Theatre Arts "There are things in this collection we don't even know are there "The reality is that we think that everything is streaming every day somebody goes online to search for something and discovers it is not currently streaming or it has never been streaming or there are rights issues or there is something going on that makes it inaccessible." will not simply disappear into the library's collections They will be housed in a newly created space within the library The biggest challenge will be "setting up a way that we can create a Naro Video-like environment within the Perry Library," Frazer said There is a lot of appeal in that type of space "There's something about that experience that is not replicated on a streaming platform." The Naro Video collection and its place as a neighborhood fixture took several decades of thoughtful curation Cooper and McGreevy purchased an already-established Naro Video The store came only with empty shelves and a neon sign McGreevy and Cooper used their personal collection they moved next door to Naro Expanded Cinema on Colley Avenue Cooper called this move "synergistic." "It was just perfect," McGreevy said Handwritten tags noting a multitude of genres directors and languages could be found throughout the store Membership cards were handwritten and filed in a box a former film critic for Portfolio magazine was the go-to-guy for movie recommendations A recent documentary, "I Found It at the Video Store," chronicles Cooper and McGreevy the store and its support from the community Video stores across the country declined as consumers shifted to streaming they sold off the last 300 company-owned stores a successful Kickstarter campaign raised $45,000 in two days This helped the store make it through the next year they realized they just couldn't keep the store going They never considered selling the inventory you have done the right thing' than make a little cash off of it," McGreevy said it was "a long process of working out the memorandum of understanding and the terms of the partnership," Frazer said just before the pandemic closed the University Frazer hopes to continue Naro Video's emphasis on community connections "It's beyond maintaining and archiving content," he said "It's making that content available as a community resource that's going to set us apart." Don't expect to go out and rent a video just yet "We estimate at least a year and a half to two years to get the whole thing the way that we want it," Frazer said More than 60% were very or somewhat concerned that they would get the coronavirus and require hospitalization.
