previous version of this story mischaracterized comments made by Colorado State player Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi Fowler-Nicolosi spoke about the rivalry with Colorado during an interview on Aug it has become one of the more emotionally charged and fierce rivalries in the sport — so much so that both teams have gone out to say they dislike each other several times REQUIRED READING: Georgia remains No. 1 after scare, Texas moves up to No. 2 in latest US LBM Coaches Poll Fowler-Nicolosi added some "trash talk" to the rivalry on Aug 14 — before the start of the season — with his thoughts on how last year's game in Boulder turned out Colorado won 43-35 after two overtime periods "They came out with that attitude and thought it was going to be a cakewalk," Fowler-Nicolosi said in an interview "They saw the reports that it was 27.5 points you have to line up 11 guys against our 11 guys and we’ll find out who wants it more We’ll see how far Instagram followers gets them.” REQUIRED READING: Four Downs and a Bracket: Billy Napier era at Florida nears end with boosters ready to pay buyout He also gave the "too small" gesture during the game Saturday against Colorado's Travis Hunter who went on to intercept him later in the game which resulted in him receiving an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty afterwards: Deion Sanders also mentioned "disrespect" from Colorado State during his postgame news conference "I just pray that our kids never act in that matter because I know you guys would have a field day if they did but I know you won't do anything or say anything when the opposing team does that versus us." — Fresno State’s 28 unanswered first-half points put up a stunning roadblock to Colorado State’s road to the Mountain West championship The Rams failed in the comeback bid Saturday night in a loss that removes CSU’s control to make the conference title game Here are a few overreactions (or not) from CSU’s 28-22 loss at Fresno State: dismay and more were predictable (and fair) online during and after the game the fears of being not-quite-legit were confirmed to CSU fans The Rams should go 6-1 in Mountain West play Almost anyone would have jumped at the chance to secure those numbers if offered in the preseason While they are maddeningly inconsistent within games this seems a more cohesive system to build on If CSU can beat Utah State and win a bowl (CSU will still cross fingers for a miracle win for Nevada over UNLV to make the MW title game) it would be a very significant step forward this season The Rams must look at everything that went wrong there but the season is more forward than backward Who is CSU’s QB to face Washington to open the 2025 season Is Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi the long-term answer Or will he seek a more pass-heavy offense to see his attempts move back up toward where they were a year ago It’s no secret that he had to make a huge adjustment to what CSU was doing offensively this season and has never looked fully comfortable and has seen his production reduced by the changes Fowler-Nicolosi has significantly cut down on turnovers and is important in reading the game to make checks at the line something akin to a streaky 3-point shooter in basketball he can sling it around and make eye-popping throws even without pressure and misses of open receivers on plays expected to be completed at this level with several bad misses highlighted by wide-open Tommy Maher being badly missed on a would-be deep-ball TD in the comeback bid It's been a frequent theme in his two seasons as a starter It is worth noting that he's a bit banged up right now which can lead to extra hesitance to step into pressure Assuming this offensive style is what Norvell will go with moving forward it feels like there’s a real chance the QB situation could go through changes in the offseason would Jackson Brousseau or Darius Curry get a chance in spring beginning with the transfer portal opening Dec Another typical online trend after a loss like the one to Fresno State is to make broad statements about the deficiency of a roster But the Norvell Year 3 group looks much different than Year 1 A run-heavy offense was missing two of its top three and three of its top five running backs against Fresno State They ran behind a star center (Jacob Gardner) who is nowhere near full health tackle Cam Bariteau’s injury surely played a role in Fresno State’s big rushing day The defensive backs have been beat up and even punter Paddy Turner looked a shell of his early-season self after an injury And it cannot be forgotten that CSU has played most of the season without superstar receiver Tory Horton There are some talented young players shining How does a 1-2 rushing attack of Justin Marshall and Jalen Dupree sound for 2025 CSU needs to keep good young players from leaving (like those running backs They’ll need to add some vets on the offensive line The defense will need a secondary overhaul after a bunch of graduations and it needs more dynamic players overall It’s a roster that needs to keep adding and boosting But it is a section to point out the conundrum athletic director John Weber and CSU leadership are facing with two rivalry wins and a bowl appearance But there are still signs that CSU is still a couple steps below the top of the Mountain West Presuming Norvell’s back in 2025, he’s entering the “lame duck” territory of a contract that expires after the 2026 season Normally this would be extension or move on time Could Weber basically say 2025 is the prove it year and see if Norvell can force his hand into an extension with a big year a couple years or maybe even a year and an option) More: Where does Colorado State coach Jay Norvell rank in Mountain West football coach pay? Would Weber make the big and potentially uncomfortable call of “suggesting” some staff tweaks in the offseason Norvell as head coach and play-caller continues to be concerning Maybe Norvell will make staff moves regardless Don’t expect the exact same coaching group to run it back in 2025 it would behoove Norvell to find a way for CSU to beat Utah State in the regular season finale on Friday A single game shouldn’t be overstated in importance but losing to eliminate CSU from the conference title race would sure send the fan base into a negative spiral and the administration would take notice CSU has difficult decisions to make and you can bet the administration is making them with an eye on the Pac-12 in 2026 in mind Follow sports reporter Kevin Lytle on X and Instagram @Kevin_Lytle Thanks for visiting The alleged $600,000 NIL offer for Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi is the story that keeps surging in college football It made another push this week when the Colorado State QB once again shared his thoughts on turning down big money offers to stay with the Rams Here's my breakdown of the topic and what it means: Like I said, this is no new story. I first broke the news of the reported offer in December of 2023, when CSU coach Jay Norvell told me Fowler-Nicolosi had turned down $600K to stay with the Rams Norvell also said CSU's top dozen players were also tampered with after the 2023 season leading college football Reddit's page and passing around social media like a wildfire He said Kansas State was in on Fowler-Nicolosi and that Ole Miss and Texas A&M were among the schools trying to lure star receiver Tory Horton It surged again in the social media sphere following CSU's media day this week when CBS reporter Richie Cozzolino posted on X part of his conversation with Fowler-Nicolosi It was a reiteration of what Fowler-Nicolosi has said that this system and chance he got to show his talent is why teams are offering him and he has a long view of success in college leads to pro riches led to the predictable nonsense comments on social media but it was consistent in what he has said previously What does that NIL offer mean?Since I first wrote that story and it took over college football talk the nonstop question I received was some form of "yeah but he didn't really get offered that much If BFN (as he's affectionately known to CSU fans) had left would he have walked to a new school and cashed a $600,000 check Day 1 Tons of people are being promised tons of things and often it's from a third-party person who may or may not be telling the truth and may or may not have the best intentions of the kid in mind It would have been very real for him and his family I know of another player on CSU's 2023 roster who was promised the world if he hit the portal He left and those promises didn't quite materialize That is the problem and why this story is such news it's about the wild stuff being promised to kids (BFN isn't even 21 yet!) who have to sift through and make a huge decision Horton and other Rams have been told that all that glitters is gold if they just leave The point is the not-so-subtle tampering going on across college sports College reporters hear stories almost daily of "School X was reaching out to Player X." When CSU plays a high-profile game and someone has a big day even if it's just an opposing team coach starting to follow a player on social media to plant a seed it makes sense a team uncertain of a QB future would reach out to BFN He's young (entering his redshirt sophomore year in 2024) with a big arm and fun personality Players responded to him when he took over early in 2023 Many schools reached out to him and it will continue as long as he's at CSU Some across social media mock him for his clip in the CBS video talking about the playoff In an interview session with written reporters the same day he said "what's stopping us from going 12-0?" when the Rams begin the season at No But it doesn't come as a guarantee or brash arrogance just the excitement and energy of a talented young QB with belief in himself and his team And he talks about making money in the future but why shouldn't he be all-in on his NFL dream Fowler-Nicolosi threw for 3,460 yards and 22 touchdowns as a redshirt freshman in 2023 he needs to cut down on his interceptions (16 of them) and clean some stuff up That's another reality of making this NIL offer public His name is known throughout college football and people will be watching to see if he lives up to whatever their perception of that offer is Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi’s statement of intent came even before his first start of the 2023 season had come in relief in the first game of the season for the Colorado State football team He showed flashes late in a lopsided loss to Washington State. The Rams then had a bye and BFN he was pretty anxious all day leading up to the late-night kickoff But when it came time to hit the field for warmups glaring into the pro-Colorado crowd like a caged tiger waiting to pounce but Fowler-Nicolosi showed more than enough to make it clear he unlocked the offense in a way no one had seen in the first 13 games of Jay Norvell’s time at CSU It clearly marked the beginning of the BFN era "If your quarterback is not ultra-competitive you’re going to have a problem along the way," Norvell said Fowler-Nicolosi entered 2023 preseason camp as a backup and maybe not even at No A year later, he is the clear starter for CSU and considered a star on the rise. He’s become nationally famous in college football for turning down lucrative NIL offers to remain with the Rams Now the expectations are not to just continue what he did a year ago but build on it and lead the Rams to the postseason "He’s learned so much from his experiences last year He’s got a calmness he didn’t have last year," Norvell said "I see a different type of leadership in him He understands it’s a long season and we don’t have to go for it every time." Fowler-Nicolosi threw for 3,460 yards (fourth-most in a season in CSU history) and 22 touchdowns (fifth-most in a season in CSU history) last season One of the mantras he’s been badgered with is "don’t get bored." If a team is easily conceding a 10-yard hitch "Understanding that I don’t have to do it all There’s no point of chucking an 80-yard post when I have a wide-open checkdown," Fowler-Nicolosi said of what he’s learning about playing the long game "The weapons we have are unreal," he added Fowler-Nicolosi lived in California early in high school but he moved to Texas as the pandemic began to shut down high school football He was JV as a junior at Aledo High School until injury and COVID quarantine quickly thrust him into the spotlight as the starter He committed to Norvell and staff while they were still at Nevada but quickly flipped to CSU when the Rams hired Norvell He was again buried on the depth chart before the change early in 2023 "It was almost déjà vu," Fowler-Nicolosi said BFN is known to be pretty chill and relaxed on a day-to-day basis On game days in the wait for kickoff he says he’s calm He listens to country music on the way to the stadium and drinks a few chocolate milks in advance of the game Now, all eyes are on Fowler-Nicolosi. The Rams open the season at Texas (1:30 p.m. MT on Saturday. Aug. 31, on ESPN) before another nationally televised broadcast Week 3 against Colorado and he’s not the youngster who took the field a year ago This is your chance to really turn a lot of eyes,'" quarterbacks coach Matt Mumme said “Turn a lot of eyes toward Fort Collins and be like Confidence is needed at the quarterback position, but Colorado State starter Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi chose a questionable time to display his during Saturday's Rocky Mountain Showdown Taunting one of the best players in college football while trailing by two scores earned Fowler-Nicolosi plenty of criticism on social media Hunter soon got his revenge when he intercepted a Fowler-Nicolosi pass late in the third quarter Here's how Colorado fans reacted to Fowler-Nicolosi's strange taunt directed at Hunter: That came after Fowler-Nicolosi had trash-talked in the lead-up to the game While making an appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd college football analyst Joel Klatt shared his thoughts on the controversy “A lot of the noise comes from outside,” Klatt said “Why don’t you shake hands with the team you just beat?” The implication being that there wouldn’t be so much noise if Colorado’s players how about if you’re the opposing quarterback you don’t run your mouth to the extent that Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi ran his mouth and then couldn’t back it up on the field,” Klatt countered you’re gonna see Shedeur Sanders shake everybody else’s hands He daps up everybody from CSU except for this clown that ran his mouth about how good he was.” who played at Colorado during his playing days also emphasized that he feels the win was a step in the right direction for Colorado “This team does show a little bit more than they did last year…I was very critical of Colorado early in the season because I thought nothing has changed…So, they have these elite players but I thought they haven’t shown anything else, though,” Klatt said. “The defense is still suspect and so on and so forth. Yet, you’re starting to see a little bit of growth in areas outside of Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter.” Top 101Trump, SabanDuo's NIL order blasted Hot32026 NFL Mock DraftTodd McShay looks ahead By clicking "Subscribe to Newsletter", I agree to On3's Privacy Notice, Terms and use of my personal information described therein Shedeur Sanders also called out Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi as being a hater and explained what happened after the game from his perspective I’m not ever going to be a hater towards anybody Now, Colorado will look to put the Colorado State game behind them and focus on Big 12 play. That starts this week with a game against the Baylor Bears. On3 is a registered trademark of On3 Media We're into the full force of basketball season with the Colorado State men's basketball team pushing forward in conference play Meanwhile, there's no such thing as offseason for football with transfers incoming and winter workouts starting for the Rams It's time for a bevy of reader questions on CSU sports What should the realistic expectations be for this men’s bball team Chances for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the men’s team are pretty slim There’s not enough of a resume in nonconference CSU needs to finish top-five in the Mountain West to earn a bye in the conference tournament This is the year that could have a “random” champion The goal should be peaking in March and that’s the trend line this group is on an NIT bid could be on the cards if they don’t win the MW Do you think the border war hoops edition will be played in the non-con annually like football There’s no contract signed but basketball schedules are made months before the upcoming season (as opposed to years ahead like football) It’s mutually beneficial for both programs to have the game be played How has CSU recruiting changed since announcing they're joining pac 12 I think it’s hard to put a tangible value on the impact so far Talking with coaches in multiple sports and they’ve said response has been very good but as far as actual recruits it’s probably more the upcoming classes who will join CSU as the Rams go into the Pac-12 where we’ll see real impact not because of a lack of benefit for football but because of roster sizes Let’s say the CSU men’s hoops team is able to land one recruit of a higher caliber because they’re intrigued by a superb basketball league (which includes Gonzaga) then that one player has a bigger impact in hoops than one star football recruit Is BFN clear qb1 or will we have open competition this spring I expect Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi to be the No I have said for a long time I think some competition would be good Maybe it will come internally from Jackson Brousseau and/or Darius Curry but all signs point to BFN being the starter Did you know BFN is just 2,741 yards from Garrett Grayson’s career passing yards record at CSU BFN starting and healthy for 12 games likely breaks that record in 2025 Jay Norvell has somewhat hitched his wagon to BFN given his frequent praise and protection of him There’s a lot of NIL money going toward BFN as well With all these new receivers it seems like they are going back to the air raid offense is that the case or more ball control like this past year I’m eager to talk to Norvell and hear the plan for the offense He hedged very significantly when I asked him after the bowl if the 2025 offense would be of the same style as 2024 CSU is reloading at receiver (and tight end) The signs point to opening up the offensive pass game My guess is the goal will be a bit of a hybrid where CSU can and will aim to run well Do you think Norvell has any hot seat pressure He’s had some time and these are his players Seems to recruit well but I imagine the upper brass has been underwhelmed as far as the field it’s clear he’s under pressure but that’s also not a hot take Norvell himself has basically said a coach is under pressure every season He’s entering Season 4 (on a five-year contract) and no extension has been signed (and I haven’t seen signs of one coming) The Rams are entering the Pac-12 after the 2025 season This has all the makings of a “prove it” year There’s no reason from a CSU perspective to give an extension yet (who would they be bidding against?) but another eight-plus win season for Norvell could have him in a nice position With 2025 being the last football season in the MWC do you think Norvell has a list of markers that he needs to hit to remain at CSU as we move to the PAC-12 The dream for CSU would be to lift the Mountain West championship trophy in the final season in the league It would be bookend titles for a program that helped found the league (the Rams were co-champs in 1999 in the MW’s first season) The absolute bottom rung of expectation is bowl eligibility I don’t think there’s an exact win amount required right now because it’s too hard to predict how good opponents will be I think matching the eight regular season wins of 2024 would be a very strong place for Norvell to start Picking up a couple key wins against good teams would be another way to prove progress It’s not a leap to say admin did not enjoy the flops in the Rocky Mountain Showdown and Snoop Bowl Some things in the evaluation will be intangible as far as how the administration feels the program is being run it’s a winning business so the clearest path to long-term stability for Norvell is to win Who do you want in the next round of Pac 12 expansion I’m going to try and be realistic while also not focusing fully on the business side of it Part of me loves the idea of going to get Memphis It would kneecap the American and create a basketball super league Tulane would be a heck of a fun football road trip But I’m also thinking of the Pac-12 trying to lean into geography while the Power 4’s have jumped the shark with coast-to-coast leagues that are already causing problems but I’m going to say go see how significantly (i.e legally) tied into the Mountain West UNLV is Go get UNLV and be the clear best in the west (the Pac already is See what shakes out around the country and be patient and poach later if something fits what’s been your impressions of the transfer portal and NIL so far This is more a book topic than a mailbag question but I’ll give it as broad and brief answer as I can It was a sham that players had few movement rights and also could not profit from a billions of dollars industry that doesn’t exist without them I’m glad players can transfer and grab some of the cash Sometimes a 17-year-old doesn’t pick right and needs to go somewhere with a better fit I don’t think a player should play at four different schools over four years It’s now just pay-to-play with no guidelines but as always boosters have taken advantage of no restrictions and naivety of youth This all could have been handled if the NCAA had worked to build a framework instead of fighting that change that was always going to come I think things will get wrangled into something more reasonable because this is unsustainable for everyone (I haven’t been) (andy_wildlife_biologist on Threads) this is a much longer topic that I’ll answer in brief here One big part of the question is money and frankly it will be years (maybe decades) until we know for sure the cost-benefit analysis of the stadium From the “CSU culture” standpoint it is a certain success It’s used for so many things year-round for CSU and community events Attendance has gone up significantly from when CSU was at Hughes The 2024 season set a single-season average attendance mark for the program and the top-two single-season marks are at Canvas Seven of the top 10 single-game attendance marks for CSU are at Canvas Canvas Stadium is the class of the Mountain West (I’m not including Allegiant Stadium since it’s not UNLV’s own stadium) and will be the same in the Pac-12 much nicer than the University of Arizona’s stadium (where the Rams played in the bowl game) There are no transportation/traffic woes as some feared (AP) — Sophomore Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi threw three of his four touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and ran for the go-ahead score as Colorado State used a run of 29 consecutive points to beat Utah State 42-37 to take a 30-13 lead Fowler-Nicolosi threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Vince Brown II and a 22-yarder to Jordan Ross with six minutes remaining to get the Rams within 30-28 Dominic Morris picked off Barnes four plays later giving Colorado State the ball on the Aggies' 19-yard line Fowler-Nicolosi ran it in from 3 yards out and the Rams took a 35-30 lead with 2:32 left to play The YDC Claims and Fowler-Nicolosi was not alone, with comments being made next to wide receiver Troy Horton as well. “Everybody’s path is different,” Sanders said. “Everybody has a different route. Jealousy and envy is the root of all evil. So, I’m not ever going to be a hater towards anybody. And then he just went online, talking crazy. I never understood that.” Watch College Football Games Live -Try for Free Fubo! Click HERE NOW Save $30 on your first month of Fubo by CLICKING HERE NOW! Sanders did not want to interact with the opposing quarterback under any circumstances, presumably because of the pregame message. Certainly no love between the two, something you may expect in a rivalry matchup. Emotions have been high between these two programs over the past two years, both on and off the field. The last laugh will wind up going to Sanders as Colorado was able to win the game. He will not face Colorado State again in his college career and the Rams are not on future schedules. Sanders is more than likely heading to the NFL following the 2024 season too. In an article published over the weekend, Denver Post columnist Sean Keeler shared excerpts from his conversation with Rich Nicolosi Rich Nicolosi stated in that interview that Kansas State was far from the only program interested in what Fowler-Nicolosi's future plans were “His DMs were ringing off the hook (in December) RELATED: STAFF ROUNDTABLE: Best 2025 NFL Draft Prospects in the Group of Street side It replaced Carmen’s Famous Italian Hoagies & Cheesesteaks which closed last month when Carmen DiGuglielmo retired after 42 years DiGiampietro, 52, whose background is in baking, was a bread vendor who delivered rolls to DiNic’s and Pearl’s before he opened Angelo’s ‘One day… one day…’ That type of thing,” Nicolosi said “Then Dave and I became friends and we talked about it as late 2019 to work for Nicolosi at DiNic’s Mooney approached DiGuglielmo on Nicolosi’s behalf and asked if he would sell Carmen’s Mooney ran into DiGuglielmo at the annual Party for the Market DiGuglielmo rejected Nicolosi’s initial offer Nicolosi and Braunstein then texted DiGiampietro: “Hey agreeing to share the business equally with Nicolosi and Braunstein Uncle Gus‘ is the Nicolosi family’s first foray into cheesesteaks “I have a long history of saying quasi-derogatory things about cheesesteaks,” Nicolosi said “I think I got this line from my dad: ‘A cheesesteak is like a hot and Braunstein said their goal was to sell the best cheesesteak in the city Won’t this create an odd dynamic, with DiGiampietro both a business partner and the owner of Angelo‘s, one of the city’s most acclaimed sandwich shops? “I defer to what Tommy always says: ‘I don’t know if we’re the best His family came into the pork business through his great-grandfather an immigrant butcher named DiClaudio (the “Di” in “DiNic’s”) opened their first shop in South Philadelphia in 1977 “Everybody said the young guys are good but the old guys at the butcher shop there are going to be people that say Uncle Gus’ might be Angelo’s-adjacent but the original is better,” Braunstein said We’re going to be singularly focused on one thing.” Uncle Gus' basic sandwich has the elements of Angelo’s standard cheesesteaks — the same beef “We‘re not looking to be a carbon copy,” Nicolosi said roasted long-hot peppers on its sandwiches “We’re modeling ourselves after the guy that we feel He then did himself no favor by seemingly throwing his offensive line under the bus after he was sacked six times Sanders and Colorado got back into the win column with a 28-9 victory over in-state rival Colorado State The 2025 QB prospect was excellent in the Buffaloes' third game completing 36 of his 49 pass attempts for 310 yards and four touchdowns It was his second time in three games he threw for at least 300 yards and had a quarter of passing scores Sanders' sensational stat line isn't what people are discussing the day after His antics are once again the major talking point due to a post game incident involving Colorado State quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi MORE: Where will Shedeur Sanders be picked in deep 2025 QB class? What happened between Sanders the Fowler-Nicolosi Here's what to know about the incident between the quarterbacks for Colorado and Colorado State Following the Buffaloes' victory over the Rams Sanders and Fowler-Nicolosi had a confrontation in the middle of the field the Colorado State quarterback came up to the Colorado signal caller as he pulled his hand back from Fowler-Nicolosi and appeared to tell him Shedeur Sanders REFUSED to shake the opposing team’s QB’s hands after beating them last night.Sanders reportedly then told the opposing QB that he “cannot” f*ck with him.Sanders immaturity is DEFINITELY a red flag for NFL scouts 😳 pic.twitter.com/gv9SLmpBy2 It is the latest chapter in a war of words between the two programs that dates back to last season — and Fowler-Nicolosi isn't off the hook it was a contentious contest between the in-state rivals with Colorado State getting its first taste of Colorado in the Coach Prime era While the Buffaloes entered the game as heavy favorites Fowler-Nicolosi took a shot at their foes for their "Instagram followers." MORE: College Football Playoff bracket for Week 4 they came out with that attitude and thought it was going to be a cakewalk," Fowler-Nicolosi said of the game last year you have to line up 11 guys against our 11 guys and we’ll see how far Instagram followers gets them." “We should have murdered them guys …we’re coming for revenge”“We’ll see how far instagram followers gets them”Here’s what CSU’s Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi and Tory Horton had to say about last year’s Rocky Mountain Showdown and the upcoming game against CU: pic.twitter.com/51ZBPyigpf That certainly did not seem to sit well with Sanders While the Colorado quarterback put together a phenomenal showing en route to the win the same can't be said about Fowler-Nicolosi He threw for 209 yards and two interceptions and did not find the end zone once in the loss Shedeur wasn't the only member of the Sanders family who took exception to the pregame comments from their opponent Deion Sanders pointed out the "disrespect" from Colorado State in the days leading up to Saturday "Personal game, emotional game," Deion Sanders said after the game The disrespect was uncalled for throughout the week We knew that coming into the game it was going to be a bit personal Bryan Murphy joined The Sporting News in 2022 as the NHL/Canada content producer Previously he worked for NBC Sports on their national news desk reporting on breaking news for the NFL in addition to covering the 2020 and 2022 Olympic Games he spent time in college as a beat reporter covering the men’s ice hockey team Although Colorado State’s 2023 season ultimately ended in disappointment one bright spot was the finding of their quarterback of the future - Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi In a season filled with fireworks and shootouts the trend began Week One against Washington State when then-starter Clay Millen went down with an injury giving way for the native Texan to embark on a season that would cement him into the starting role Fowler-Nicolosi really sprung onto the scene as he made his first start in Boulder against Deion Sanders’ Buffs in week two On one of college football’s biggest stages that week in front of a sold out crowd and a nationally televised audience - Fowler-Nicolosi went on to throw for 367 yards and three touchdowns as the Rams fell just short in the double overtime thriller Head Coach Jay Norvel mentioned the redshirt sophomore had a $600,000 offer to leave Colorado State after the season a situation like that is not very surprising as Fowler-Nicolosi’s arm talent jumps off the screen I will be focusing on all the different throws he’s able to make as he looks to be even more of a driving force for Norvel’s offense in 2024 When it comes to being able to drive the ball downfield or fitting throws into tight windows - it is no problem for Fowler-Nicolosi One of the most impressive aspects of Fowler-Nicolosi’s arm strength is the reliability in less-than-ideal conditions (i.e Fowler-Nicolosi also consistently displayed the ability to accurately place his throws where only his receivers can get it Fowler-Nicolosi was a force outside of the pocket whether it was by design or when the pocket collapsed - he has a knack for being able to deliver when rolling to the left Fowler-Nicolosi takes advantage of the stout pass protection as Air Force brings the zone blitz the ball traveled about 50 yards in the air from Fowler-Nicolosi’s release to catch in what seemed to be inclement weather Colorado State dials up a double slant concept off a play action fake leading to Fowler-Nicolosi delivering a strike that had enough velocity to not give the undercutting linebacker a shot at making a play on the ball there is a chance the linebacker buzzing underneath breaks up the pass or even intercepts it Most would agree that a quarterback’s ability to play against man coverage is a great indicator of his true ability - especially in regards to accuracy This coverage puts five defenders on all five receivers in man coverage with two safeties for deep support and a four man pass rush - making it quite a challenge to attack Fowler-Nicolosi places his throw perfectly on his target’s back shoulder protecting the ball from not only the defender in man coverage but the deep safety whose job is precisely not to let this happen You know a quarterback is confident in his arm talent when he never hesitates to attempt opposite-hash passes - even in less-than-ideal pocket situations We get a great look at that kind of confidence as Fowler-Nicolosi delivers an “on the money” corner ball from the opposite hash in this clip What makes this play impressive is not only the throw itself which would have been a tough one to complete even with a clean pocket but Fowler-Nicolosi completes this throw as his right tackle gets walked into his lap You can see BFN barely being able to get his back leg through because of the pressure directly in his face but still has the arm strength to get it done coaches would rather not design plays in which their quarterback rolls out to their non-dominant side due to the fact that there is a whole shoulder rotating process that not all quarterbacks handle too well this is clearly not the case with Fowler-Nicolosi as he gets his shoulders turned quickly while on the run and delivers a completion that could not have been placed more perfectly If you asked me to describe Fowler-Nicolosi’s best quality as a quarterback in a few words I would say “the presence of significant arm talent in any situation” We see just that in this clip as Hawaii dials up what seems to be an all out Cover Zero blitz however as they begin to bring the pressure leading to some confusion for the offensive linemen and allowing the pass rush to get on Fowler-Nicolosi right at the top of his drop with one rusher being completely untouched On a “got to have it” fourth-and-eight play that ultimately would have decided the game at that point Fowler-Nicolosi connected on a 70-yard touchdown that put Colorado State in position to tie the game The highlight here is the fact that Fowler-Nicolosi connected on the pass that was in the air for 30 yards off of his back foot This was obviously no lob of a throw either as Fowler-Nicolosi layered this ball perfectly over the top of the secondary allowing his receiver to catch and run immediately Where most quarterbacks would have been dead-to-rights in a situation like this Fowler-Nicolosi’s arm talent was the difference in the biggest of moments a quarterback can face at any level of the game Colorado State QB Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi has no interest in chasing a quick payday The talented passer for the Rams threw for 3,460 yards and 22 touchdowns last season and rushed for one more in 2023 He's one of the more talented QBs in America and a top quarterback at the G5 level. He was allegedly offered $600,000 to hit the portal during the offseason but the redshirt sophomore wasn't interested in ditching Fort Collins for a different location he's explaining why he turned down a significant chunk of money to stick with the Rams 2023; Fort Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi is one of the better QBs in America The Colorado State QB spoke with the media earlier in the week about his decision to stick with the Rams and said the following: "I didn't come here to make money I came here to win games and play ball for the Rams My job in college isn't to sit here and make as much money as I can I know the new landscape is exciting for a lot of people There's a lot of opportunities out there I'm a 20-year-old kid with higher goals in life than to make money in college as much as a blessing that would be and set myself up for a long time I think if I do my job here and we get it done and perform like we know how we're supposed to I think there's several people on this team that will be taken care of for life after college." Now sometimes, athletes put that beef aside and shake hands anyway. But there was clearly no love lost between the quarterbacks and the programs. Heck, Deion Sanders and Jay Norvell don’t get along. “We all came here to play football, so end of the day, the millions of the followers and fans that they produced and got and celebrities that jumped on their side because of who Deion Sanders is, at the day Deon Sanders ain’t playing,” Horton said. “It’s those players playing, so those players back up what they speak about.” Sanders had another banner night throwing the ball though. He had 310 yards and four touchdowns with 100 yards and two of those touchdowns going to Travis Hunter. For comparison, Nicolosi-Fowler threw for 209 yards and two interceptions. Justin Marshall was responsible for the lone touchdown for the Rams, running for 54 yards on the ground.
