but has likely clinched a spot in the 2026 FIDE Women's Candidates Tournament.
Nicosia FIDE Women's Grand Prix Round 9 Results
Prize money and Grand Prix points are shared among players on the same score
though the number of games with the black pieces and then the Sonnenborn-Berger tiebreaker (based not only on your results but on the results of your opponents) were used to separate the players
Nicosia FIDE Women's Grand Prix Final Standings
For the first time in the event all five games were drawn, but it was an action-packed round with only a couple of exceptions. One of those saw Goryachkina play the Berlin Defense against GM Mariya Muzychuk and
which gave her a tie for third (fifth after tiebreaks)
followed sole and shared first places in her first two Grand Prix events
FIDE Women's Grand Prix Standings After Nicosia
Goryachkina has played all three of her events, with only Anna Muzychuk, Zhu, and potentially GM Alina Kashlinskaya (if she gets to play two more events
though she's currently only scheduled to play in India after her wildcard appearance in Tbilisi) still able to surpass her score
It's unlikely more than one player will manage to outscore Goryachkina
and there are two spots in the Candidates.
The day's fastest draw, meanwhile, saw Paehtz take a draw by repetition in a position she was in fact winning against IM Divya Deshmukh
A win would still have left her in last place
Tournament winner Anna Muzychuk clinched her title with a hard-fought draw with the black pieces against GM Harika Dronavalli
The final game looked uncomfortable for a while
successfully liquidated to a drawn rook endgame
That draw meant a great result for Anna, but whether it would be first or second place was dependent on both of the remaining games. Zhu could have taken sole first with a win, and with some brilliantly resourceful play deep in the endgame she almost managed. GM Nana Dzagnidze was up to the defensive task
An intense game looked to be winding down to a draw until Zhu unleashed 46.b5!
with the idea of going two pawns down to try and win.
Zhu was still only the thinnest of margins away from winning the tournament on tiebreaks, since all that would have required was for Badelka (who had beaten Anna Muzychuk and lost to Zhu) to win her game against IM Stavroula Tsolakidou
but after some brilliant attacking play Badelka had mate-in-seven on the board
and later her winning advantage slipped away in a tricky endgame
So a fantastic round of chess ended with five draws
"The last time I shared first place was 13 years ago
so this win is indeed very special for me!"
but once again there's not long to wait until the action starts again

A brief but intense downpour over the weekend turned part of Engomi into a fast-moving river
raising fresh concerns over Cyprus’ readiness to handle extreme weather
Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos didn’t hold back in a video post from the flooded Lefkotheou Avenue
where he said just 15 minutes of heavy rainfall was enough to overwhelm the area
While municipal crews responded quickly and had taken preventive measures beforehand
he said the root of the problem lies elsewhere
“This is what happens when flood protection infrastructure is incomplete,” Prountzos said
Climate change is making these events stronger and more destructive.”
four municipal crews were dispatched during the storm
working in coordination with other agencies
but made it clear that such reactive efforts aren’t enough
Prountzos pointed out that while some flood mitigation projects have been completed in the Nicosia district
He urged the government to fast-track long-overdue works in Engomi
“What we need are serious flood protection works
“And these projects can be funded through the Recovery Fund
The mayor didn’t stop at broad calls for action
he raised direct questions about longstanding project delays
Among them: Why haven’t runoff ponds at the old State Fairgrounds or near the former Nicosia airport been completed
Are these delays contributing to the frequent flooding in Engomi and Agios Dometios
He also pointed to areas like Heroes Avenue
and Grivas Digenis as places that have been waiting decades for proper protection
Other vulnerable zones include Skali and Aglantzia
where floodwaters reportedly destabilized a rocky slope above residential homes
“How many more times do roads like Navarino and Salaminos have to be repaired before we realize that without real flood defences
we’re just throwing money at symptoms?” he asked
Prountzos also questioned which government body is actually in charge of flood protection
saying the overlapping responsibilities between various agencies have led to a bureaucratic mess
“People don’t care which agency is supposed to be in charge
They care about not waking up to find their homes underwater
And that’s a perfectly reasonable expectation.”

Nicosia FIDE Women's Grand Prix Round 7 Results
The results mean that Zhu and Anna Muzychuk swapped roles
with Zhu taking a half-point lead while the same three players are in third place
Nicosia FIDE Women's Grand Prix Standings After Round 7
GM Elisabeth Paehtz had suffered four losses in Nicosia, so it was perhaps a surprise when GM Aleksandra Goryachkina acquiesced to a lightning-fast 11-move draw by repetition
A draw with the black pieces is seldom bad
and Goryachkina's unbeaten run in her last of three Grand Prix events leaves her very well-placed to qualify for the 2026 FIDE Women's Candidates Tournament from the series
The day's other draw was more predictable, with third-placed GMs Harika Dronavalli and Mariya Muzychuk playing out a solid 28-move draw
where both players showed 99.3-percent accuracy scores
since the wins were wild and highly significant!
"It’s better to win late than never!" said Badelka
whose first win came against the tournament leader
The game essentially came down to Anna Muzychuk missing one devastating in-between move
that Badelka played instead of taking the knight on d2
is the only way to fight on in a difficult position
"the position is just collapsing," as Badelka said
Badelka commented: "Maybe she wasn’t really happy with her outcome of the opening
so she spent already half an hour and maybe she wanted to simplify things immediately
That slip by the leader was pounced on by Zhu
though in the middlegame she briefly got a chance to take over
Zhu found a wonderful knight maneuver that led to a spectacular win—if Divya hadn't resigned
we would have seen underpromotion to a knight to clinch victory
The knight had started its journey with 30.Nd1!
So Zhu leads her first Grand Prix of the 2024-2025 season
Dzagnidze bounced back from a tough loss with a win
who has now lost three of her last four games.
with Tsolakidou ultimately going astray by offering up an exchange for one move too many with 18.Bf2?
That dramatic round has shaken up the standings
Anna Muzychuk has White against Paehtz in round eight

Nicosia topped the charts in March with the most expensive property sale in Cyprus
a whopping 29.3-million-euro office transaction in the central district of Agioi Omologites
the company revealed that the 10 most expensive property sales across the island in March reached a combined €56.5 million
Nicosia not only led the pack with the top sale
but its overall high-end property activity also outpaced traditional market heavyweight Limassol
Limassol was nudged into third place behind Larnaca
with each district securing just three of the top 10 biggest sales
continuing its steady climb in the high-value real estate sector
Zooming out to the 50 biggest transactions of March (10 in every district)
with €45.5 million worth of top-tier deals
Larnaca followed with €17.4 million (18.8%)
just ahead of Limassol’s €16.2 million (17.5%)
Paphos saw a notable dip in major property transactions

The Nicosia leg of the FIDE Women's Grand Prix is the fourth of six taking place in 2024 and 2025
where they battle for a maximum 130 points and €18,000 ($18,900)
with the top two players at the end of the series qualifying for the 2026 FIDE Women's Candidates Tournament that will select the next world championship challenger
FIDE Women's Grand Prix 2024-5 Standings Before Nicosia
IM Alina Kashlinskaya won the first leg in Tbilisi
but did it as a wildcard and is currently not expected to play in more legs of the series
Goryachkina then took sole first place in Shymkent, before tying for first place in Monaco with IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul and GM Koneru Humpy
Goryachkina will be playing her third and final Grand Prix in Cyprus and knows that another win will guarantee her a spot in the Candidates
Tsolakidou is also playing her final event and would gain chances of finishing in the overall top two with a victory
Now let's get to the action from round one
Nicosia FIDE Women's Grand Prix Round 1 Results
Those results mean that Tsolakidou and Zhu took the very early lead
Nicosia FIDE Women's Grand Prix Standings After Round 1
As always in the first round of a Grand Prix, players from the same country were paired against each other. In this case that also meant two players from the same family, GMs Anna and Mariya Muzychuk
Their clash took a bit longer than might have been expected
but it finished in the same way all of their clashes in tournaments that aren't knockouts have finished—as a draw
IM Divya Deshmukh vs. GM Harika Dronavalli was the other clash of players from the same country
but while their Berlin never sparked into life
you couldn't accuse the Indian stars of a lack of fighting spirit—they played the longest game of the day
The other draw was the heavyweight clash between Grand Prix leader Goryachkina and GM Nana Dzagnidze
While the early skirmishes in the game were sharp
it ended up in a drawish four-rook endgame.
The Greek number-one admitted after the game that her time management had been shaky
since she spent almost 27 minutes on her 14th move
That left her down to two minutes to her opponent's 15 when a critical situation arose
"I feel like I got a bit lucky in the end!" Paehtz went after White's c2-pawn
(Tsolakidou: "She probably missed that!") was the coldest of cold showers
Women's world number-four Lei Tingjie was supposed to play the last three Grand Prix events
The 22-year-old is the Chinese number-five
which doesn't sound that impressive until you realize she's also the world number-seven on the live rating list after her round-one win
"I think it’s a very nice opportunity to play here," she said after the game
Zhu took on another 22-year-old late replacement
who will be able to play in just two Grand Prix legs
so that she's not competing for the FIDE Candidates spots
Their clash was an Anti-Berlin where Badelka's 7...Re8!
but later she would take full positional control until eventually forcing capitulation with a checkmating attack
An impressive start to Zhu's bid to become another in a long line of Chinese women's world champions

enclosed by its 16th-century Venetian Walls
provides an unparalleled backdrop for SESAM Identity 2.0
Within these walls lies a fascinating architectural tapestry that tells the story of centuries of coexistence and conflict

Nicosia's old city retains a unique vibrancy
This complexity offers a rich framework for investigating how identity is expressed
and transformed through architecture and urban spaces
A Unique Learning Experience Through workshops
"SESAM Identity 2.0" aims to investigate identity using four distinct pillars:· Processes + Rituals: We delve into how everyday practices—both personal and collective—shape and express identity.· Representation: Architecture and urban spaces often reflect who is represented and who is excluded
we question the role of representation in shaping identity.· Memory: Memory is fluid and personal
Our workshops will explore how individual and collective memories shape and inscribe themselves in the built environment.· Phenomenology: Through lived experiences
we investigate how sensory perceptions of space influence personal and collective identities
examining the intricate relationship between body
EASA's non-institutionalized and collaborative approach to education fosters experimentation and creativity
"SESAM Identity 2.0" provides participants with the opportunity to explore alternative pedagogies in architecture and urban design while working within a supportive and diverse community

The European Union is advancing plans to lift long-standing sanctions on Syria
but with conditions reflecting concerns from Greece and Cyprus over territorial and minority rights
both nations are seeking a “review clause” that would allow for the immediate reinstatement of sanctions if the Syrian government
led by a transitional Islamist administration
Greece and Cyprus have demanded guarantees for religious minorities
They are also pushing for safeguards against moves that could harm their interests
such as Syria signing a maritime agreement with Turkey
Both countries want these concerns explicitly detailed in the EU’s legal framework
expected to be finalized by the end of February
Diplomatic sources confirmed Monday that a “silent agreement” has been reached within the EU to shift deliberations from regional expert groups to the legal refinement team of the European Council (Relex)
This decision reflects the recognition of Greece’s and Cyprus’ concerns as “legitimate” by European diplomats
Athens and Nicosia initially expressed reservations about lifting sanctions on Syria
despite endorsing a political agreement on January 27 to start the process
they have voiced concerns about Turkey’s influence in Syria and fears of a potential maritime agreement between Turkey and Syria that could undermine Cypriot rights in the Eastern Mediterranean
Greek and Cypriot officials emphasize they are not opposed to lifting sanctions but want clear assurances to protect Syrian Christians
prevent Turkey from imposing maritime agreements at the expense of EU member-states
and guarantee these safeguards are explicitly documented
European diplomatic officials also noted the inclusion of a “reversibility mechanism” in the proposal
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has stressed
“While our goal is to move swiftly on lifting sanctions
we are also ready to reverse course if the situation deteriorates.” Six member-states
have supported this approach through a joint non-paper initiative led by Berlin
The EU’s effort aims to send a political signal of support for Syria’s reconstruction
Some member-states see investment opportunities
concerns persist about security risks and the re-emergence of terrorist groups
EU sources emphasized that lifting sanctions will be a gradual process
with a comprehensive review planned for May
