was a day like any other day – the sun came up
and Donald Trump was hit with at least three nationwide injunctions by federal district court judges
That’s just the way it goes if you are a president who wants to take back America from the entrenched left-wing bureaucracy and restore common sense to government before it is too late
The danger of the bureaucracy was predicted by Julien Benda in his 1927 book “The Treason of the Clerks,” which warned of the danger of the intellectual class adopting political passions that had previously been the sole domain of the masses
We see this most distinctly today in the federal bureaucracy
which I dare say has the greatest concentration of degree-holders from Harvard
Columbia (and the like) of any sector in the nation
other than the incestuous universities themselves
The treason that Benda described was the loss of independence of thought and dispassionate reason by intellectuals, and the accompanying subservience of intellect to political passions. During Trump’s first term, I wrote a column describing the danger that Benda had foreseen:
Benda wrote at the beginning of the age of mass communication
and yet he already saw that “political passions have attained a universality never before known
… Thanks to the progress of communication and
it is clear that the holders of the same political hatred now form a compact impassioned mass
every individual of which feels himself in touch with the infinite number of others
whereas a century ago such people were comparatively out of touch with each other and hated in a ‘scattered’ way” …
It seems that we are now living out Benda’s worst nightmare — an age of manipulation of the masses by those who think they know better — whether you call them the “deep state,” the “opposition party,” “the national elite,” “the entrenched bureaucracy,” or just “the establishment.”
they have turned their hatred on Donald Trump
they fight him on every reform and arm themselves with invented scandal and fake news
we see that the bureaucracy has a close ally in the judiciary – not one judge
but multitudes that aim to preserve the status quo of liberal governance
If that wasn’t clear before April 24
there was no room for doubt after the day was filled with one court ruling after another telling Trump to “stand back and stand by” rather than to exercise his lawful power as president
Here’s what tumbled out of the judicial branch that day:
– A federal district court judge in California blocked Trump’s executive order that would have denied federal funds to so-called sanctuary cities that limit or forbid cooperation with federal immigration authorities
judge blocked the Trump administration from following through on the president’s executive order requiring that voters in federal elections show proof of citizenship when registering
– A district judge in New Hampshire blocked efforts to defund public schools that utilize diversity
giving added protection to one of the least popular programs ever shoved down the throat of American citizens
those were the latest of more than a dozen nationwide injunctions issued by unelected federal judges who appeared more interested in preserving and protecting left-wing shibboleths than the Constitution
Also in courts across the nation that week were attempts by judges to reject Trump’s authority as commander in chief to ban transgender participation in the military
to deny Trump the right to strip security clearances from law firms that he says put national security interests second to political partisanship
and stop the administration’s efforts to eliminate federal news services such as Voice of America that engage in anti-American propaganda
Those are all in addition to the several injunctions issued relative to Trump’s promised reform of the immigration system to expedite deportation of illegal immigrants
especially those who have a criminal history or are members of international gangs
If that seems normal, it isn’t. There were only six nationwide injunctions during the eight years of the George W
That increased to 14 under President Biden
which was surpassed by President Trump in the first nine weeks of his second term when 15 such injunctions were issued
Trump should be accustomed to such judicial abuse
there were 64 injunctions against his policies
a staggering 92.2% issued by Democrat-appointed judges
Julien Benda would have clearly recognized the “political passions” that had supplanted the disinterested intellectual rigor we once expected of our judges
Yet because of our habituated respect for the separation of powers
none dare call it the treason of the judiciary
That of course is a reference to the 1960s tract “None Dare Call It Treason” by John A
Stormer took on the country’s intellectual elites
blaming them for working against the interests of the nation by tolerating or quietly promoting communism
The left-wing elites of the day laughed it off as another right-wing conspiracy theory
but as time has passed it’s become clear that there was indeed a long-range effort to corrupt our institutions with Communism 101 – reducing social acceptance of religion
and infiltrating government with the intelligentsia that thinks American values are outdated
we can see the fruit of the corrupt tree sprouting in our court system
where judges help illegal immigrants escape through the back door of the courtroom
where other judges demand the return of deported gang members or halt the deportation of antisemitic radicals
and where every effort to put America first is ruled unconstitutional
Fighting back against the overreach of the judiciary must be Donald Trump’s No
1 priority as he seeks to restore sanity to the federal government
Because the most important principle of constitutional law that is being decided in the next few months is whether the president is truly the chief executive or whether he serves at the pleasure of left-wing judges who put political passion ahead of national interests
the case must be decided by nine men and women in black robes
the justices of the Supreme Court of the United States
The fate of the nation’s future hinges on whether they will seek justice impartially or be swayed by partisan rancor

The dark prog-pop band’s second album Stygian Wavs is confirmation they’re a band in their own right
even if they quickly abandoned attempts to work together in the same room
Lifeson and ex Coney Hatch bassist Andy Curran invite Prog for a dip in their dark progressive-pop waters
welcoming the muse and embracing a set of very different musical challenges
Alex Lifeson’s eyes are sparkling with pride
and they’re matched by a smile so warm that it could melt the snow piled up outside his home studio in Toronto
Hanging on the wall are just a small selection of the guitars with which he made his name
and in his hand is a steaming mug of coffee that befits this mid-morning hour
he’s recalling the tipping point when Envy Of None – the electronica- industrial- influenced outfit featuring vocalist Maiah Wynne
ex Coney Hatch bassist Andy Curran and second multi-instrumentalist Alfio Annibalini – went from being a project to a band
“The first time I listened to the whole of Stygian Wavz mastered
we’re a band; a good band!’” Lifeson says
“The first album was a project to me
I guess it was the way we worked; we were more connected and I was happy with that.”
the confirmed change in woring status came through a moment of levity
“I secretly asked graphic artist Brian Walsby to draw us as Gerry Anderson’s Thunderbirds,” he says
“I showed them this poster that said
‘Envy Of None Are Go!’ Alex said
‘That should be the album cover!’ and that was when I knew we were a band.”
Should anybody still be in any doubt over their sincerity, Lifeson stresses that he’s experiencing the same level of excitement over the release of Stygian Wavz as he has at any point since Rush released their self-titled debut album back in 1974
“We’re so excited,” he says
“It’s been a year and a half of our lives working on this record from the spring of 2023.”
“And you still get that thrill hearing it on the radio,” adds Curran
It’s difficult not to share their fervour; the record is infused with a sense of urgency
immediacy and accessibility that takes their music several strides forward with a confidence that oozes from its pores
As heralded by the singles that preceded its release – the filthy electro groove of Not Dead Yet and the textured pop-rock of Under The Stars – the album finds Envy Of None painting from a broader palette with bolder brush strokes
Lifeson says there was never any doubt that a second record would happen
“We started maybe a half hour after we released the first album
We had bits and pieces floating around; more material started to flow in
It really was a concerted effort on all our parts.”
Following a steady exchange of ideas and working up bed tracks
they properly hit their stride in the summer of 2024
Such was the level of commitment that they jettisoned their original modus operandi of layering up the music via remote recording
and actually convened in a studio to work face-to-face
But they lasted just seven days before reverting
“I think we were far more efficient working individually in our studios,” says Curran
“Maiah didn’t have three guys pumping opinions into her while she was recording
That’s what we enjoy about working individually – there’s no one piping in our ears
I got the impression she was much happier working on her own.”
“I think there’s a vibe when you’re in the room together
it’s difficult not to get distracted by the comments and activity
Everybody gets excited and has an idea of what to throw in the pot
I totally get that – with Rush we were all super-active in all our parts
This snowball effect is brilliant with all these ideas developing and barrelling forward
“But I find that when I’m working at home in this great little studio of mine
I’m not distracted and I dive into it
I get into a flow; it’s more efficient and I work quicker
I think we’re all skilled enough to work alone and submit our parts
while everybody gets it and everybody feels it
We keep building a pyramid by sending back files.”
Lifeson believes remote working frees Wynne to experiment with any number of vocal melodies and harmonies
which inspire the guitarist to come up with new ideas that in turn inspire her further
“Often I’d do a scratch guitar on something that Andy and Alf sent
and send that to Maiah,” says Lifeson
“She’d do a basic scratch vocal and that would come back to me
I’d get so much information from her vocal and
I’d get inspired to go to other places with my guitar parts
This snowball effect is brilliant with all these ideas developing and barrelling forward.”
He goes on to praise the singer’s contribution
“Maiah is the centre of Envy Of None; we surround her
Her vocal arrangements are the centre of what it is
I’m serving the song; that’s who I am and who I want to be
It’s different for me now and I embrace and absolutely adore that
She thinks about music very similarly to the way I do
We’re really connected despite the 50-year-or-so age difference; we really do walk the same path
quite often the result is a dance that we do between the guitar parts and the vocal parts
I think Rush wrote some great songs and we wrote some crazy songs and maybe a couple of duffers
We started working with her when she was 19 and we’ve had a really cool era with her as she’s grown as a vocalist and as a person.”
One cynical view of an established musicians’ side-projects is that it serves as an ego massage or a vehicle for music that was laughed out of the day-job studio. Although they’ve just released the career-spanning Rush 50
Lifeson is no longer bound by his former band – the only group he’d ever played in bar a few guest slots
That offers him a whole new musical route to explore
Envy Of None make absolutely no reference to either Rush or Coney Hatch
This is music that’s made on its own terms to stand on its own legs
None of the band would have it any other way
“I’m super-proud of my past and everything that Rush accomplished,” states Lifeson
“I think we wrote some great songs and we wrote some crazy songs and maybe a couple of duffers
but it’s what I did and I’ve sort of moved on
I’m so happy and excited with my life now as one of the folks in Envy Of None.”
Stygian Wavz features more guitar solos in comparison to its predecessor – and that’s partly because Lifeson’s initial trepidation in how to approach them turned into a pleasurable experience
I didn’t want it to be too Alex Lifeson-like… I have to step back and celebrate the amazing vocalist in this band
“I didn’t want it to be too Alex Lifeson-like,” he says
have never been this flashy thing; solos are an integral part of a song
I like to think that my solos connect very closely with what the song is about
It’s part of the main body of the song and it doesn’t stand out as this singular moment.”
I have to be more delicate at times; and I have to step back and acknowledge and celebrate the amazing vocalist in this band.”
Curren elaborates: “In the early stages of songwriting when we’re throwing around ideas I watch the song develop
The solos Alex has added usually come after Maiah’s scratch vocals
where it feels like it needs to go somewhere
The solo punctuates the song and it’s right there
I don’t ever get the impression that Alex has popped something in so that he could shred or show off
It’s always about the song and taking it to a level.”
He adds: “The courtesy that we show each other and the amount of rope we give each other is great
I’ve been in bands where there’s been a lot of turmoil and turf wars – there’s nothing bad in Envy Of None.”
and with two albums and an EP under their collective belt
“We would love to,” Lifeson replies
“It would really be a great show with the right lighting
adding more musicians for a live presentation
Playing these songs live with Maiah as the focus would be really fabulous.”
But caveats apply: “Everybody is busy; everybody’s got stuff and it’s difficult for me to plan something like that
I wouldn’t write the idea off – it’s a possibility if all things can align.”
But one thing that can be counted on is another album
I think we have a few ideas left over from the last one,” says Lifeson with a broad grin

So Sam Mendes has cast his Beatles tetralogy
I’ve just invented the Beatles Cinematic Universe
I’m sorry to say, however, that Sam has almost entirely ignored the casting suggestions that I made in February last year
Harry Melling as Ringo and Barry Keoghan as John (though Barry got Ringo in the end)
But I like to think that Sam Mendes and his producer Pippa Harris were thinking on more or less the same lines as me
there are no American actors doing Brit accents – just the kind of well-trained British or Irish actors who can fabricate perfect American accents for American roles elsewhere
Without wishing to get stuck into an identity politics controversy

all about four people from the Beatles Cinematic Universe

This move to convert the old Joann's stores to Burlington stores will start happening this month and in June, with most leases being taken over on June 1
Other Joann locations will be taken over by other retailers like Hobby Lobby

Colorado landowners are fighting back against Nebraska’s threat to condemn their land to build the Perkins County Canal – which would bring water to Nebraska
Fred Knapp of Nebraska Public Media News went to Colorado to talk to some of the people who own the land Nebraska wants
JJ Parker drives his pickup down Sedgwick County Road 28
about five miles south of the Nebraska border
JJ is in the fourth generation of Parkers to live on the land
signed by Theodore Roosevelt,” Parker tells him
Parker points to a meadow where he grows hay to feed his cattle and to sell
It's never been anything – it's never been broke up
I still have all the stuff – still have all the horse-drawn equipment,” he says
But this generation of Parkers may be the last to work the meadow
Parker said the state of Nebraska wants to acquire about 38 acres of his land outright
to divert water from the South Platte River and begin the Perkins County Canal
That’s a project to bring water from Colorado to Nebraska
A century-old agreement between the states gives Nebraska the right to get land for the canal in Colorado
Parker got a letter giving him 90 days to accept an offer for his land or face the possibility of Nebraska using eminent domain to condemn the land
Parker also did not feel Nebraska offered him a reasonable price
a lot of us – this going to put us out of the farming business anyway,” he says
When asked how he would characterize the way the state of Nebraska has dealt with him
“Have you ever been condemned before?" he asked
"That's not the greatest thing ever.”
He objects to how Nebraska is trying to get land even before it's gotten the environmental permits that it will need for the canal
“Taking land from families that have had 100 years on that land
when you don't have the key elements of being able to build your project… seems premature and pretty devastating to that family,” Kross says
None of them want to sell to Nebraska,” he says
and we've hired what we consider to be – and is considered by many people to be – the best attorney in Colorado to fight condemnation
and that's what we're intending to do
We'll do whatever it takes to fight condemnation.”
The deadline to accept Nebraska’s offer or face possible eminent domain proceedings was April 17
I guess we're just – it's kind of a waiting game
We don't know what Nebraska is going to do
so I guess we'll just wait and see,” he said
The Nebraska Department of Natural Resources declined an interview request to talk about where things stand with its land acquisition efforts
it said “The Department of Natural Resources is currently in the negotiation phase on a number of property acquisitions related to the Perkins County Canal Project
We will not be commenting until such transactions are complete.”
another landowner who said Nebraska has talked to him about using his land
said the states need to look for a win-win solution
"Nebraska and Colorado need to be happy with the end result
and there might be more efficient ways to provide Nebraska with water it needs
And the gold standard today may not be a canal
but it may not be viable in 2025,” he said
But Lasater added he doesn’t see any movement in that direction yet
“Maybe both sides aren't ready to sit down and carve out
Maybe we're still posturing,” he said

We’re so relieved the administration has reversed some of its early rulings
While we hope for more such changes of heart
have decided to consider our own rulings and whether we might regard them with fresh eyes
we have done so and are pleased to share our findings
Karen now sometimes watches TV during the day
Cindy is eating potato chips on non-weekend days again and has also concluded that Schoenberg is not worth the time
even when offered for free during an orchestra rehearsal at Lincoln Center
Lately I’ve seen people cutting flowers and branches from park trees during the Spring bloom
CINDY: Ask them if you can take a cutting of fabric from their outfit
KAREN: It may be worth it for you to carry around a little packet of seeds
I find it clean and orderly and meditative
I don’t want to say hello to the trainers whose faces are now familiar
I once quit my gym because of this very problem
it coincided with the pandemic and the gym closed)
point to your ears as if they are stuffed with ear pods
CINDY: Wear a superhero eye mask like Batman or Robin
I’m a 60-year-old man and was raised to treat women w/ respect – opening doors
I don’t do these things because I consider women to be weaker than men
but I realize that in today’s environment these things can be misconstrued
Is it ok for me to continue to do these small acts of kindness and consideration
or do women today consider them to be offensive
KAREN: I was sort of in love with you until you blamed women for the death of chivalry
but I think you should continue to engage in these lovely acts of kindness in addition to demonstrating other forms of respect for the women you spend time with
asking for their opinion or their life story
I can’t tell you how many men open the door for me and immediately ask me what my husband does for a living
I think the women who get mad at men who open the door for them are no fun
women didn’t kill chivalry; men insulted by the idea of feminism did
You should continue doing what you think is right
Offer your luggage services to all luggage-challenged people
Take a male friend to dinner once in a while
If you see dog poop on the street or on a park path
KAREN: As someone who hates poop on the street
I don’t know if I could do this; it’s like changing a stranger’s baby’s diaper
if you are offering and you have some kind of compulsion
CINDY: I always offer poop bags to people I see leaving poop behind
but I don’t pick up the poop if the pooper is long gone
I really hate people who don’t pick up the poop
I miss the dining shed sheds from Covid times
CINDY: Try wearing a beret and silk scarf tied jauntily around your throat and meeting friends for take-out in the park

Love the ” Ruthless Advice” column. Makes me smile every time!
Makes me smile every time too!!! You can catch Ruthless Comedy Hour TONIGHT!!!!!! 7:30pm NY Comedy Club 236 W 78th St. They’ve got some super special guests joining them as well!!!
I plan to check Webster’s for the definition of chivalry…..as I truly appreciate it when someone holds the door for me. I believe I did when I was 40, or 50 and certainly once my carpal tunnel, trigger thumb (look it up, it’s a real thing that a surgeon fixed) and general decrepitude set in. The doors on Target, oh, gosh, thank heavens for the buttons! The doors on that bakery I ought not visit anyway, I figure I’ve burned enough calories opening their door twice to earn the almond croissant.
I hold doors for any person with a walker or stroller, and hope it’s not my elderly (oh, gosh, did I admit to belonging to that adjective) appearance that encourages others to do the same occasionally for me, but seems a nice way to give anyone a little bit of kindness in their day.
You two make me smile. Haven’t seen such lovely humor since W nixed the Dutchess’ column a long time ago. Hoping for a book some day!
P.S. Outdoor seating including sheds is slowly coming back! The w69th to w72nd area is ready for summer dining.
I thought the sheds were no longer legal. No permanent roofs. Has to be open air. No solid walls.
They have to comply with city approved design but they are not illegal.
I miss the old outdoor dining as well – there is way less outdoor dining & sheds that have come back are smaller, more flimsy and way uglier than the ones that got knocked down due to the new guidelines.
But now our NJ neighbors have a few more places to store their cars
We’re thinking a limited series. On Netflix.

There are countless measures of elevated U.S
but the deep gulf in forecasts for Federal Reserve interest rates paints a particularly messy picture
Few if any expect the Fed to cut its main policy rate this week
despite relentless demands from President Donald Trump and his team for lower borrowing rates
central bank officials have stressed routinely
the fog over what happens next for the economy and inflation is just too thick at this juncture
But what happens after this week looks like a crapshoot
the median expectation of the year-end Fed policy rate from more than 100 forecasters polled by Reuters last month appears routine for a time with such febrile trade
The consensus was for two quarter-percentage-point cuts
pushing the Fed’s policy rate to the 3.75-4.00% range
That’s basically the median for where Fed policymakers put it in March
and it’s a bit stingier than the 85 basis points in cuts futures markets have been betting on even after Friday’s relatively robust U.S
But much like the views of Fed officials themselves
that median masks big differences of opinion - and not just among the odd outliers
Some 125 basis points separates the highest from the lowest forecasts
a gap of that size may simply reflect the usual smorgasbord of views that make up a market
But the fact that 20% of those polled saw no Fed easing whatsoever for the rest of the year is pretty extraordinary when markets are priced for three to four cuts
Seven forecasters saw as many as four cuts for the year
with two - Citi and Wells Fargo - opting for five
Morgan Stanley strategists expect that the Fed will remain on hold all year
explaining that the shock from Trump’s import tariffs could create tension between the U.S
central bank’s dual mandates for jobs and inflation by lifting both prices and unemployment
But they expect the Fed will likely lean in the direction of price stability
“We continue to project no rate cuts in 2025 if the economy avoids a recession
as we currently expect,” they wrote last week
we don’t see much incentive for the Fed to rule-in or rule-out action in June
but we think risks tilt in the direction of the Fed saying that getting clarity to act will likely take time - several months or more.”
That certainly tallies with what many Fed policymakers have been saying about the next few months
anxious as they are about the potential for sharp import price rises when inflation remains above target
especially because this may seep into longer-term inflation expectations and behavior
But it remains a big call to rule out a cut for the whole year
They do nuance it slightly by saying markets are underpricing the chance of deeper rate cuts next year
And any seeming conviction in any of these forecasts belies the scale of uncertainty regarding tariffs - where they will end up
also takes a hawkish view of the central bank’s deliberations and speeches
but he argues that market pricing of a relatively high 40% chance of a cut as soon as the June 17-18 policy meeting is based on lingering fears of a “sudden stop” in activity between now and then
“This would be consistent with our ‘zero-or-50’ call on June
“If the data deteriorates so quickly that the Fed needs to adjust its guidance between now and June
and that’s typically when a 50-bp (basis point cut) comes into play.”
The resilience in the April payrolls may cause that sort of contingency pricing to be rolled back to some degree
But there’s an even less tangible consideration at the margin
Fed officials may well be inclined to lean hawkish to signal distance from the political pressure being heaped on them
as allowing that perception to take hold could help de-anchor inflation expectations over time
But the pressure from the administration to ease just keeps coming
even after Trump dismissed speculation that he intended to fire Fed Chair Jerome Powell
whose term as central bank chief expires next year
Renewing his criticism of Powell as “a guy in the Fed that I’m not a huge fan of,” Trump said last week: “He should reduce interest rates
I think I understand interest a lot better than him.”
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent chimed in
“We are seeing that two-year rates are now below fed funds rates
so that’s a market signal that they think the Fed should be cutting,” he said
What the Fed should do and what it will do may be different things
the certainty of the administration is not shared by the forecasting community

Students file into restaurants and dessert shops
and swaths of tourists arrive for their weekends away
the night of the Boston Celtics’ third playoff game against the Orlando Magic
I was in search of a sports bar — and not just a bar that also happens to show sports
a place built for events like the Celtics game
Cambridge and Somerville are “college towns,” anchored to the west by Harvard
and to the east by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
This is a trait that typically brings countless cheap dive bars in tow
the schools that call Camberville home aren’t exactly known for their sports culture
I begin my search at the Russell House Tavern
a dimly lit fixture located just opposite Harvard Yard
I catch a glimpse of NBA basketball on a bar TV — a promising sign
It is typically crowded for a Friday night
but patrons are surely not here to watch basketball
but far from the affordable dive bar grub I am searching for
a two-top right next to the live music band
Rather than craning my neck to see the sheet on the wall
I find myself watching Jayson Tatum and company on the reflection of a bald guest’s head
a popular pub for students submerged under Winthrop Park
I inquire with the bouncer about the ability to sports-watch
I haven’t even succeeded in entering the building
Such is the struggle for a Harvard Square sports bar
much of the land this side of the Charles finds dedicated sports bars to be few and far between
searching for greener pastures in Somerville
I find what I am looking for: Parlor Sports
an “events bar” that has operated in Inman Square since 2011
a manager and bartender at Parlor from its opening
assures me that I am not the only one frustrated with the lack of sports bars in the area
“Parlor opened in 2011 in response to there being a void of places to watch big sporting events in the area,” he says
“We decided to turn into a sports bar after the Celtics’ 2010 Finals run
but it was a slow process getting a good group of people.”
but Solomon tells me that the bar enjoys patronage for events spanning from the Super Bowl and the World Cup to live episodes of The Bachelor
The space is tightly lined with televisions and charming memorabilia
including a letterboard listing the “featured events” of the week
For the few sports bars on this side of the river
located just steps from the Central Square T station
is the host for Boston’s legion of Liverpool FC supporters
a role that has earned it the third-place spot in Thrillist’s list of “America's best soccer bars.” On Sunday
when the Reds clinched the Premier League championship
fans packed the bar’s cozy interior well before kick-off
relying not on one rabid fan base but on consistency
but number one has been our community and how supportive they’ve been
even through the years and even through Covid,” Solomon explains
and you know that person is going to be there
and they are going to know your drink and know your order
It’s not as commonplace as it used to be.”
I catch a glance of that night’s Celtics game playing in a dorm window
despite the lack of “sports bars” in Harvard Square
Solomon argues this is what makes a place like Parlor so necessary
“There are people that still love football
and Tufts are no different than anybody else.”

FORECASTSHARE PHOTOS & VIDEO5.3 magnitude earthquake rattles west Texas and southern New Mexico, no injuries reportedby CNN Newsource | USGS
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A 5.3 magnitude earthquake shook southern New Mexico on Saturday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake's epicenter was located approximately 15 miles north of New Mexico's border with Texas and originated at a depth of about four miles.
Despite the notable shaking felt by many residents, there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage resulting from the quake.
UPDATE: As of 5 p.m. on Sunday, the sinkhole has been repaired. Travelers may still see delays as the site is cleared.
SAN ANTONIO - A water main break caused a sinkhole that swallowed a vehicle near a local high school.
On Saturday, a 12-inch water main broke near the corner of Wilson Blvd. and Meredeth Drive, not far from Jefferson High School.
This break led to a sinkhole forming in the street, which swallowed a vehicle passing through the intersection.
According to the San Antonio Water System (SAWS), crews responded quickly to the scene, removing the vehicle from the sinkhole and beginning repair work on the line.
Water service was restored to the surrounding area within a couple of hours, according to a SAWS representative.
Nobody was injured in the incident, and SAWS says they've been in contact with the owner of the affected vehicle.
the Arizona Cardinals wasted no time giving their new additions their jersey numbers
The team announced the new assignments on April 30
we have jersey numbers,” the team’s official Instagram said
After a masterful showing at the 2025 NFL Draft
The magnificent seven new rookies—Walter Nolen III
Jarden Conner and Kitan Crawford—all got their numbers
And the newly signed free agents got theirs
none of the rookies got to carry over the numbers they wore in college
That can be a good or a bad thing: if you wore a number while winning the national college football championship
you’d want to carry that luck and momentum into the NFL
And if you’ve worn that number for most of your football career
So while none of the incoming rookie class will get to wear their college numbers (and you’ll find out why)
The Cardinals’ first-round draft pick gets No
97 (which we all hope is his inaugural Madden rating)
2 while playing for Ole Miss in 2024 and No
The only reason Nolen can’t sport either of his college numbers is the NFL rule saying that interior defensive linemen cannot wear single-digit numbers. Defensive end Anthony Goodlow had the number before
but the team has reassigned it to Nolen while giving No
Will Johnson is the second Cardinals player to sport the No
the wide receiver who played a single game with Arizona in 2023
With Pascal now playing for the New York Giants
the digit was up for grabs—here’s hoping it brings Johnson better luck
the number currently worn by linebacker Mack Wilson Sr
It seems to be working out for Mack—he put up 75 tackles last season
before transferring to Oregon (where he wore No
While he could technically wear a single digit
both of Burch’s college numbers are in use
taking the number he wore when he played for Ohio State
That currently belongs to quarterback Kyler Murray
Cody Simon wore two numbers during his tenure at Ohio State: first
Where you go in the NFL Draft matters: Will Johnson got No
who signed with the Cardinals’ practice squad in 2024 (before signing a reserved/future contract at the start of 2025)
Okay, okay, okay—this is a bit of a technicality. Yes, Denzel Burke technically wore No
29 while playing for the Ohio State Buckeyes
The cornerback played his final three seasons with the team
including the 2024 national championship run
Josh Sweat will wear the No. 10 when the former Philadelphia Eagle suits up with the Cardinals this season. If Burke makes me eat my words this season
I will get his jersey and make 29 my new lucky number
76 during his tenure with the Texas Longhorns
The offensive lineman could have worn it again
it seems the Cardinals are saving the number for Will Hernandez
The former New York Giants offensive lineman signed a one-year deal with Arizona in 2022 and a two-year contract extension in ’23
starting every game that season as a right guard
and the Cardinals' decision not to give Conner the No
76 hints that the team hopes Hernandez will re-sign
32 (his college number) after Tyran Mathieu left the season
shifting to the single-digit in 2021 after Tay Gowan began tweeting he’d be No
(No. 32 is currently used by Joey Blount. If Baker wanted to resume the number, he’d have to buy up all the No. 3 jerseys for sale, like he did when he shifted to No. 3 (per AZCardinals.com)
Budda has been a massive part of the Cardinals’ defense
some of that mojo rubs off in the number when Crawford dons No

Budda has been a massive part of the Cardinals’ defense, leading the league in tackles in 2019. Hopefully, some of that mojo rubs off in the number when Crawford dons No. 36.
Currently, wide receiver Greg Dortch sports the No. 4. And cornerback Garret Williams has No. 21.
The seven players the Arizona Cardinals picked in the 2025 NFL Draft will don new numbers when they suit up. There's a reason for that.

President Donald Trump arrives to welcome the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles NFL football team to the South Lawn of the White House
As Donald Trump approaches the 100th day of his second term, most voters are not impressed. Majorities disapprove of his performance on key issues, like immigration and the economy, and almost half give his overall performance an F on an A through F scale. Only a slim majority of Republicans give him an A, according to a new NPR/PBS News/Marist poll

I cannot overstate how out of character this was
after five years of juggling tiny children with writing and a full-time university job
our upturned faces bathed in the green and gold trails across the sky
I sent out a reminder the week before and another the day before
not wanting to seem too desperate or too casual
I made brownies and wrapped them in tinfoil
and endlessly refreshed the weather app on my phone
Waking up on the morning of the party, I found the first text waiting. ‘I’m so sorry, I’ve got the flu.’ ‘Oh poor you!’
It was only one out of the 25 who’d said yes
There were work deadlines and childcare glitches
But what could be more humiliating than ditching your own birthday party because no one was going to come
the rucksack of wine and brownies shamefully heavy on my back
and none were people I had known that long
I was so grateful they had made the effort – but there was no denying the awkwardness
We joked about the awfulness of friends not showing up and wondered if perhaps an outside party in November hadn’t been the best plan
The ‘flaky friend’ is a modern scourge – at least
according to magazine columnists and online blogs
it is becoming more common to cancel at the last minute
In my 20s – when playing Snake was the most exciting thing you could do on your phone – and even in my 30s I endlessly bailed on my friends
it was because a better offer – or a boy – had come along
Occasionally it was because I was dreading the event in question
But mostly it was due to the general air of chaos that surrounded me in those years
only to be woken by an irritated phone call
asking whether I still planned to come to the brunch/walk/gallery trip (my fake coughing fooling no one)
Or I would arrive for dinner in time for pudding
flustered and blathering about getting lost or being stuck at work
I was disorganised around family events and work
but friends – because we are not obliged to keep our commitments to them in quite the same way – bore the brunt
My worst flake was failing to show at a friend’s wedding
had found nowhere to stay and had nothing to wear
It wasn’t until the morning of the actual wedding that I finally emailed (emailed!) saying I was ill and couldn’t make it
wondering why I couldn’t live as other people did
What once passed for charmingly absent-minded had become downright rude
I avoided the friend in question for years after that
Only the illness of a mutual friend gave me the chance to show I could do better
even if both of us have politely skirted all mention of my terrible behaviour since
Tiffany Watt Smith: ‘My worst flake was failing to show at a friend’s wedding’
People have always warned about friends like me
the Italian writer Boncompagno da Signa created a whole taxonomy of bad friends who betrayed
including unreliable types who failed to show up when needed
even as we complain that flakiness is on the rise
recognising that in a world of endless virtual social encounters
our capacity for real-world interactions is shrinking
The conversations around social anxiety and neurodiversity also show that what can seem like casual ‘flaking’ might have involved hours
But then there are the self-appointed social media ‘experts’ who frame ditching friends as noble ‘self-care’
it is partly due to their normalising this behaviour – a dangerous step in an age when we are more lonely than ever
I conducted interviews with dozens of strangers about friendship and heard less easily told stories
There was the 52-year-old man who suspected his friend
cared less about their friendship than he did – a thought he found humiliating
mentally ‘downgrading’ her flaky friend: the relationship eventually fizzled out
Without legal contracts of marriage or obligations of blood ties holding them together
it’s surprisingly easy for friendships to drift away
‘I have lost friends,’ wrote Virginia Woolf in her 1931 novel The Waves
‘some by death… others through sheer inability to cross the street.’
I will forever love the people who made it to Primrose Hill that night
bringing cake and mulled wine in old milk cartons
as I stared out over the city below: that I would never
I like to think I’ve become a more reliable friend
even amid work deadlines and childcare crunches
I am more careful who I make arrangements with
And I am more honest about declining social invitations I will regret (rather than bailing at the last minute)
I don’t know if my friends still think of me as unreliable
But I can say giving up flaking has made me feel closer to them
more mindful of the fragile skein of trust that holds us together
flaking isn’t ‘self-care’; building trusting friendships is
only a natural disaster would keep me from my friends – the best and most precious people I know

BREAKING: Berkshire Shares Slide On News Of Buffett Exit
If you want to make money on popular ETFs this year, there's one key strategy — avoid the S&P 500
All 10 of the largest ETFs with positive year-to-date returns, including Vanguard FTSE Developed Markets (VEA), iShares Core MSCI EAFE (IEFA) and Vanguard Total Bond Market (BND)
S&P 500-focused ETFs dominated in terms of size and performance for years
The broadening out is forcing investors to reconsider what it means to be diversified in the age of Trump administration tariffs
U.S. investors used to think just owning the S&P 500 was all they needed. And it's hard to fault them. Returns definitely rewarded a U.S. bias — until President Donald Trump's first 100 days, which are the worst since the second Nixon administration
The giant $605 billion-in-assets Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO)
returned 15.3% annually in the past five years
That demolishes the 11.1% annualized five-year return of Vanguard FTSE Developed Markets
which owns shares of companies in developed countries except the U.S
The Vanguard FTSE Developed Market ETF returned 11.2% this year
the Vanguard S&P 500 is down 5.1% on a total return basis
IEMG has returned 3.6% this year while VWO is up 2.6%
"There is strong growth potential in markets like China
India and Taiwan but the risks remain elevated," Rosenbluth said
"Adding exposure through ETFs like IEMG and VWO in moderate doses could make sense for some but not all investors."
Given the massive unpredictability in the market
it's not surprising to see investors cling to popular ETFs for safety
There's actually a bull market raging in gold ETFs, a refuge for investors worried about inflation and sluggish economic growth. The largest gold ETF, the $100.6 billion-in-assets SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) is up 26.4% this year
That's a significant rally as it's pushing gold's longer term returns past the S&P 500
The SPDR Gold Shares ETF returned more than 20% annualized in the past three years
That tops the 12.1% three-year annualized return of the S&P 500
And while global bonds are outperforming U.S. debt this year, large bond funds with heavy exposures to U.S. Treasuries are still standouts among large funds. The $124 billion-in-assets iShares Core US Aggregate Bond ETF (AGG) returned 3.3% this year so far
"Fixed income ETFs like AGG and BND provide a different level of diversification due to their ownership of U.S
government bonds and investment grade corporate bonds that offer stable income," Rosenbluth said
"Bonds typically provide ballast to a portfolio."
investors continue to pile into the S&P 500 waiting for a recovery
"Vanguard 500 has approximately $50 billion of net inflows this year," Rosenbluth said
many investors are using the sell-off in U.S
stocks as a buying opportunity via this ETF."

Second time’s a charm for Rush’s Alex Lifeson as he returns with a new album alongside his collaborators in Envy Of None
The last time Classic Rock chatted with Andy Curran and Alex Lifeson about the future of their new musical venture
the bassist and guitarist were non-committal
and the affirmation that they’d created something special was just around the corner
dreamy self-titled debut album hit some serious milestones
among them No.1 in Billboard’s New Artist and Alternative Artist lists
the four-piece had certainly found an appreciative audience
Leaping forward to 2025, Envy Of None are now releasing album number two, Stygian Wavz
a record in keeping with its predecessor’s gothic-rock imaging
dreamy sonic picture now expanded psychedelically
And Lifeson tells us the plan fell into place quickly
“I think we started working on the record about twenty minutes after the release of the first,” he says
on a video call with Classic Rock and EON vocalist Maiah Wynne
“We had little bits of ideas lingering
But once we committed to doing a second LP
we threw those aside and started with fresher
because we’d had this great time making [the debut]
as Wynne completed her introspective solo album
on which the 28-year-old confronted childhood trauma and mental health issues
Envy Of None bandmates Lifeson and Alf Annibalini
“I think a lot of us were also going through personal kind of journeys,” Wynne says
the years after the first [EON] album release were really challenging
I was going through a lot of growth and difficult moments
“In some ways I think the music was a way for us to channel that
“The first album’s lyrics have a lot of self-reflection
But then there’s a lot of hope and a feeling of movement
I put a lot of my personal self into these lyrics.”
Sign up below to get the latest from Classic Rock
Curran met Wynne when she won a radio talent contest in 2016
Part of her prize was a mentorship with him via Zoom
His head turned by an industrial-style song she had
Curran encouraged Wynne to keep up what she was doing
to meet more musicians and to develop herself
offering vocals for a song he had in a similar industrial
She was soon told that Rush guitarist Lifeson was on board
Working with Lifeson was an important step for Wynne
“My parents had been to a few Rush concerts together,” she says
“Having this association was really special for me
because I think it’s every parent’s worst nightmare when your child pursues music as a career [laughs]
It was a really great turning point for me
and special to be able to connect with them in that way
But they didn’t believe me at all when I first told them
Today Lifeson is keen to cheerlead for Wynne
telling Classic Rock: “I found her delivery
voice and the thoughtfulness that went into her arrangements really impressive
“I seldom really commit to developing a song fully
because I’m waiting to hear what Maiah does
and this informs me so much about where I can take the guitar,” he says of their ‘process’
“I weave in and out of what she’s created harmonically
and the symbiotic result is that we sort of dance together
There’s something about her that’s really affected me and the way I produce music.”
“a lot of the material is coming from Andy
“I love to enhance somebody else’s music
because quite often it’s not what people expect to hear from me
They think it’s the guy from Rush and he’s going to do this
but I usually end up doing something that’s not recognisable as ‘Alex Lifeson’
creating guitar sounds that don’t sound like guitar
colour and all of this emotional content.”
Wynne worked on “little projects here and there”
“I’ve been working on an animated feature film
studying some online classes in production… and I did a month-long trip to India.” You can hear that spiritual influence in Stygian Wavz
“My family are from Serbia,” Lifeson says
“That music was always playing when I was growing up
This next phase of Envy Of None makes Wynne beam
“I’m doing something exciting with my career
but beyond that I have a large amount of respect for my Envy Of None brothers
I’ve loved becoming friends with them
And I honestly woke up this morning and I was like: ‘I’m so excited I get to see Alex again!’ It’s such a joy getting to work with them.”
“When I finally listened to the mastered record from top to bottom
I felt: ‘This is a band,’” he says
“The first record was a union of four musicians writing music to create an album
but with this second one we really connected as bandmates.”

Pakistan's UN envoy on Friday warned that growing tensions with India could lead to a dangerous conflict
urging the world to help prevent escalation and support a neutral investigation of the April 22 attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 26
ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad criticized India's "unjustified actions and unilateral measures" following the Pahalgam attack
saying they have heightened tensions and threaten regional peace
New Delhi has claimed the attack had "cross-border links," which Islamabad denied
and demanded a joint investigation into the incident
Both countries have taken diplomatic measures at each other
including cancelling visas for each other’s citizens and recalling diplomatic staff
India has also suspended its participation in the Indus Waters Treaty
a 1960 water use and distribution agreement with Pakistan
Islamabad says any attempt to divert or stop the flow of water will be considered an "act of war."
the armies of the two South Asian countries have also exchanged small arms fire across the disputed Kashmir border — the Line of Control
Stressing that Pakistan is "fully prepared to defend" its sovereignty and territorial integrity
Ahmad said: "Should India resort to aggression
Pakistan will exercise its inherent and legitimate right to self-defense
that's a region which is home to close to 2 billion people
It is time for sanity to prevail and to allow dialog and diplomacy to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control," the Pakistani envoy stressed
"India's conduct marked by a disregard for international law and regional stability is incendiary and dangerous
with the potential for far-reaching and disastrous consequences," he said
Criticizing India for politicizing the issue of terrorism
he said: "The point is that India has used
while Pakistan itself is the biggest victim of terrorism
actually -- to promote certain political objectives."
He also claimed that India's rhetoric and actions are part of a broader strategy to divert attention from the Kashmir dispute
"This is now a familiar template aimed at diverting attention from India's inability to suppress the inalienable right of the Kashmiri people to self-determination," he said
Responding to Anadolu's question on global reactions to Pakistan's call for an international investigation
he said: "I think what we have said in terms of a demand for credible
neutral and independent investigation of this incident
Arguing that India "often seen as acting as a judge and the jury," he said that "immediately following this incident
they were pointing fingers towards Pakistan
putting the blame out on Pakistan while there was no evidence
while there was not even a proper investigation that had been initiated."
He said Pakistan's call for "an independent
neutral investigation" did not receive a positive response from the Indian authorities
Ahmad said support from the US and other major powers is crucial
"We believe it (the US) has an instrumental role to play
but also in resolving the Jammu and Kashmir dispute … The permanent members of the Security Council

and it may be that we might not for several days

I don’t know if the Electoral College tally is undetermined
as some have predicted and others threatened
The final days and weeks of the campaign have been rancorous
a sitting president apparently responding in kind

Politics is a hard business, of course, and always has been: it’s not as if the early days of the republic saw cheerful and respectful exchanges of views. The contest between Jefferson and Adams was notoriously vicious
Dirty tricks and insults did not appear for the first time only in recent campaigns
but we can mourn the current tone and mood without succumbing to nostalgia for some idyllic past
Too many of our political elites appear to have contempt for entire swaths of the populace
The political class does not seem to produce especially serious people
as if this or that stunt or verbal mistake mattered—when it did not matter at all—even as we appeared unwilling or unable to soberly deliberate about the debt
A serious and self-respecting people require more than we received during the campaign
Although far too many citizens themselves seem unserious as they give way to histrionics about “the most important election in history” or the “threats to democracy” supposedly posed by both parties
My expectations of our political class are rather low. To borrow from while altering Wordsworth: “Lincoln
thou shouldst be living at this hour: America hath need of thee.” We would do well to discover statesmen in our halls of power
Well, put not your trust in princes, says the Psalmist, and it’s good counsel. I wish that this morning we heard our leaders evoke the spirit of Lincoln from his Second Inaugural Address

With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right
to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations
Whatever the outcome; whether today you are waiting
in keeping with our station and responsibilities
If our media and political elites are unwilling
there is no reason why you and I cannot be patient
and act in ways keeping with the responsibility of self-governance for the commonweal
If today we are tempted to gloat or despair
it would be far better for ourselves and our children to quietly pray or study
