Jai Toor hopes to shed light on stories of immigrationThe photographer gives us the low-down on his latest series Novellara
and why immigration is a subject matter that tends to get exploited – “it skews the narrative”
There are certain conversations that tend to stick in your mind. When speaking with Jai Toor in 2020
he told us about his project Yet Another Day – a documentation of family life lensed through the daily happenings of his grandparents
it was this particular phrase that struck a chord: “photography is more than just a picture”
Applying this to his wider work in general
the London-based photographer has a knack for highlighting personal histories and memories from those closest to him
as well as communities from further afield
And his latest series Novellara simply proves this fact
Novellara was borne after Jai learned that Italy has the second largest population of Sikhs outside of the UK
He became intrigued and wondered why they chose Italy as their destination
“I wanted to see how the first and second generation communities live in rural pockets of Italy.” As such
he started researching further into the topic and discovered that
a large portion of the Sikh Indian immigrants have moved for jobs in farming and the dairy industry
most of which went to work in factories and others in the circus
media representation has been warped with negative portrayals of these communities
“Media representation surrounding Sikh and South Asian diaspora within Italy is centred around similar themes,” he adds
"Many stories surround negative news or focus on topics like religion
Meanwhile, after a recent farmers’ protest in India – where many Sikhs were uprising against new agriculture laws set by the Indian government – this provoked Jai to go a little further
“I wanted to see if this was the case or if the narrative has changed over the years
and how it correlates to the mass wave of immigration to the UK which my grandparents were part of.”
you’ll see his subjects looking directly into the lens
adopting a gaze so deep that their lives are somewhat revealed through the powerful act of eye contact
The landscape shots are dominated by architectural structures
personal and immensely intimate – an antithesis to what is commonly represented in the media
Having visited Bologna and Reggio Emilia in the beginning – the closest town to Novellara – Jai explains how the process behind the project seemed to evolve spontaneously
but most memorable was his interaction with two local boys
They began telling me about the history of the town and even showed me around.” The boys told Jai about their family
“The fact that everyone I spoke to did not mention exploitation once
made me question the locals and how they felt living in Italy,” he says
“All responses mentioned how they had been getting treated fairly and that life in Italy was amazing; the ground was exactly like Punjab for farming
quality of life was better and the community was quite tight-kit
The boys also mentioned learning Italian at school and embedding into the school was a wholesome experience.”
Jai hopes to shed light on immigration stories and the importance of listening to others
things aren’t always what they seem – especially in relation to what’s depicted in the media – and immigration is a subject matter that tends to be exploited greatly
but when that’s the only thing the stories are focused around
“I hope to go back and visit this summer and continue the body of work
There are so many follow-up questions I want to ask.”

More extensive Western rhetoric often sees South Asians as the model minority
South Asians are anything but a model minority
you’ll find many South Asians among blue-collar workers
We occupy little space in the popular imagination for much of Europe
oscillating between the out-of-date exotic snake charmer image or the slumdog millionaire
much media representation and headlines in European countries narrowly focus on the South Asian diaspora’s migration problem
These South Asians have lived meaningful lives spanning decades
They’ve created homes and respectability that’s hidden in portrayal and consciousness.
To shed light on the multifaceted lives of South Asians in Europe, photographer Jai Toor spent a summer photographing Italy’s Sikh community in the tiny town of Novellara
He captures faces and places that compel viewers to shed stereotypes and confront the integration and progress of the Sikh-Italian community.
Novellara is a beautiful reminder of the boundlessness of imagination
It takes a radical vision to create a home by merging a foreign culture with your own
From the Punjabi fliers posted on the same board as the Italian posters to the Italian red clay roof on top of Dhillon’s Center
Toor’s images celebrate the humanity and cultural impact of the Sikh Italian Community

To allow the recognition of the young woman who disappeared in April 2021 would have been an anomaly of the teeth
The body found on 18 November 2022 in Novellara
To allow the recognition would have been an anomaly of the teeth
The girl had disappeared from her home on the night of April 30
Five people are accused of his murder: uncle Danish Hasnain
cousins Ikram Ijaz and Nomanhulaq Nomanhulaq (all three in prison)
father Shabbar Abbas (arrested a month ago in Pakistan) and also mother Nazia Shaheen
All respond to the crimes of premeditated homicide in competition
alerted the police after the disappearance
the dramatic story had begun well before her disappearance
when the still minor girl had turned to social services to report her parents for mistreatment and for the crime of inducing marriage
Saman rejected the idea of an arranged marriage and she no longer wanted to wear the veil
commented on Twitter: “Saman Abbas: no girl can be deprived of the right to live her own life
And none of her can be asked to pay for her freedom with her life ”
A precious oil on copper by Lelio Orsi (Novellara
1508/1511 - 1587) is returning to the great 16th-century painter’s hometown of Novellara: it is Leda and the Swan
a painting that has been returned to the Gonzaga Museum in Novellara
which has been specially renovated to house the work by Lelio Orsi
which returned to Emilia after a complex affair that lasted more than 15 years
granted on deposit by the Ministry of Culture
has been on display at the museum since last April 6.Of this painting by Lelio Orsi
an oil on copper measuring 43x30 centimeters that Reggio Emilia residents had last had a chance to admire in early 1988
thanks to an exhibition dedicated to the great Emilian mannerist at the municipal theater
when it was sold by New York auction house Sotheby’s for more than a million dollars
embarked on a dispute that turned into a kind of mystery
similar to those narrated in the novels written by Carlo Fruttero together with the writer Franco Lucentini
in 1988 was the owner of Orsi’s masterpiece exhibited in Reggio Emilia
The work remained in Lucentini’s house until 2002
the reappearance on the market six years later that provoked the intervention of the Carabinieri of the Nucleo Tutela Patrimonio Culturale who ascertained the illicit exit of the work
which was returned to the Italian state following its return
One of Lucentini’s heirs sold the work to an antiquarian who
without having obtained the necessary authorizations
and from there it then arrived in the United States
purchased in the meantime by the collector who auctioned it in 2008
The affair was finally resolved with the confiscation of the work shortly after the auction: after its return to Italy
Leda and the Swan remained in storage for a long time at the Command of the Nucleo Tutela Patrimonio Culturale of the Carabinieri in Rome
the City of Novellara strongly urged that the masterpiece be housed at the Gonzaga Museum
The Ministry of Culture has issued a favorable opinion
subject to an agreement between the Emilia-Romagna Regional Directorate of Museums and the municipality to ensure the work’s maximum appreciation
The agreement covers the restoration of the masterpiece’s pictorial film and improvements to the Gonzaga Museum
The renovation of the museum’s layout
of which the Region contributed 42,000 euros
the project revolutionized the spaces designated for permanent exhibition by intervening on lighting
The main interventions were focused on the most significant rooms of the museum: those dedicated to the figure of Lelio Orsi and the collection of the Jesuit Spezieria Vases
The improvement of didactic and information devices
was designed to make the contents accessible to different categories of visitors
Derby atmosphere that also brings good luck to the Novellara who conquers the "Rinaldi" of Reggiolo in the English style, reconquering the First category after 15 years. For the boys of trainer Bruno Prandi, the former Zaniboni and the striker Brocchetta scored.
Angry poker (4-2) of the Celtic Cavriago (for Cavriago pallonara it is the second championship won after the seal in Third of the cousins of Sporting two weeks ago that cancels the same number of tumbles of last year) on Cerredolese stretched by Rispoli, Boretti, Riella and Dallaglio that mean immediate return to the upper floor for the black and greens of the coach Luisito Reggiani. For the locals Rivi and the striker Guido Guidetti shorten the distances.
Virtus Libertas fell in Modena, defeated (0-1) by Corlo and joined in second place by FalkGalileo: on Sunday, ironically, the city derby of Cella will put the silver medal of group C up for grabs.
The Falketti overcome (3-1) Povigliese thanks to a sprint start marked by the diagonal of Redo who grants the encore of a header on a corner of Iaquinta. The guests who shorten with the penalty of Signoriello, but at the end the new-entered Grotti nets with a flat from a cross of Arcuri.
Allai's shot to the top of the table marks Guastalla's away win over Daino Santa Croce: a goal that keeps the play-off flame alight.
A season in 5' for Atletic Progetto Montagna who almost took the lead, didn't win the corner and on the counterattack Boca Barco managed the lethal counterattack in the 90th minute with Muredda who sealed their salvation.
Still in the running Campeginese beats (4-2) the Original Celtic Bohys condemning them to the first relegation in their history. For the locals double by Mungiguerra, singles by Frignani and Bettati inspired by a solo by Tagliavini; for the black and greens provisional draw signed by Sakho from eleven meters and by Obeng on a corner twenty minutes from the gong.
Virtus Mandrio's feat stops San Prospero Correggio's winning streak at 11, stung in the 94th minute by Lambruschini's deflection on the second post; the yellow-greens thus secure third place.
Internal hara-kiri for Santos 1948 surprised by Rubiera and thus condemned to the play-out against Virtus Bagnolo: a lightning-fast counter-attack by Montorsi was unblocked, cancelled out by Carfagna's header, then in the second half Arleoni scored an assist from Carubbi, but the disaster was concocted in injury time with Lambruschini's equaliser and Fisic's counter-attack to overtake.
In group D, United Albinea and Fellegara are celebrating with poker scores in view of the direct clash on Sunday at the "Nasi" with second place currently in the hands of the Albinetans at +3 points.
The yellow-greens conquer Casina thanks to Sassi, the two-goal scorer Ferrante (decisive at 0-1 with a save on the line in a slide) and the euro-goal from 20 meters by Margini.
Fellegara's task was much easier as they crushed Borzanese with doubles by Campani and Brusciano.
At the bottom of the table, a vital success for Puianello who tamed (2-1) Roteglia thanks to Kokolari's shot to the top corner and Tessitori's touch; in the middle, Borrelli's provisional equaliser from the penalty spot.
In the third category, the tandem Rivalta-Vetto continues to advance arm in arm, overtaking an increasingly troubled Cavriago into second place.
A distracted and experimental Sporting Cavriago slips at home (2-3) with Fogliano thus defending eighth place thanks to Malagutti's free kick, Iardino's invention and Rinaldi's penalty.
Redeghieri and Sonko are closing the gap for the leaders.

The away match of the team opens the programme at 19pm Clevertech Montecchio (18) in Argenta (16): if Castellani's men want eighth place, they must now make the decisive sprint to reach it.

Playouts. The playouts will also start in the evening with the Clevertech Montecchio on the field at 20pm in Sant'Ilario against Vignola, in a best of 3 series: the end of the season was bitter, because with another step direct salvation would have been within reach, but Germani and his teammates must immediately start off on the right foot against an opponent within reach.
At 21pm it's the turn of Novellara Basketball, expected in Bologna by SG Fortitudo: the treatment by Tellini, who replaced Bertani during the season, has borne fruit, but now is the time to reap them, starting to snatch the advantage of home field advantage from the opponents.
In the afternoon there will be a torchlight procession to remember the 18-year-old Pakistani
Today, Tuesday 26 March, the funeral of Saman Abbas
"This was a long-awaited moment because somehow between Saman's disappearance
it is as if today's funeral closed a chapter
Our commitment and desire to do more for girls like Saman necessarily remains open but at the same time we close this story by giving it a dignified burial
Being able to give people a place to remember her is important to us
anyone who wants to bring her a flower and dedicate a thought or prayer to her will be able to do so in a dignified place where we will try to preserve her memory." he has declared Elena Carletti
The first citizen spoke on the topic of forced marriages
which pushed us to mobilize to raise awareness of this topic
especially since reports and concerns regarding the lives of many girls have inevitably increased” added the mayor
“Remembering Saman means taking an interest in the lives of the Saman we don't know
The hope is that the community will always pay close attention to this issue
I was amazed by the amount of people who approached me
all potential grandmothers and grandfathers of this young girl
Perhaps this murder entered the collective imagination because it was accompanied by very strong images
I have found in many citizens the desire to be that family that she did not have and that betrayed her" he added Elena Carletti
