With wastewater being prevalent in every city across North America
the market for WET systems exceeds $24 billion
WET systems provide meaningful carbon reduction for dense urban centres where other technologies like Geoexchange are not viable or practical
Q&A with Dennis Fotinos, CEO & Founder | Noventa Energy Partners
I founded Noventa Energy Partners in February 2018 with a mission to decarbonize our world through disruptive innovation
I quickly identified wastewater energy as an untapped source of renewable energy and forged a business arrangement with Huber Technology of Germany to be their exclusive distributor of the Huber ThermWin® technology. With the support of our major shareholder
we have expanded our operations across Canada
the US and UK where we are operating WET systems and pursuing other WET System opportunities which will be announced in the coming months.
Noventa is my second venture in the renewable energy sector. In 1999
I founded Enwave Energy Corporation through the privatization of a faltering non-profit district energy business
I led the growth of the business achieving a CAGR over ten years of 36%
I initiated and led the development of the renowned Deep Lake Water Cooling system which provided cooling to over 25 million square feet of built space by 2013 when we sold the business to Brookfield
I was a finalist for the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
I lead a talented group of industry leaders and professionals who are reshaping the energy sector by executing on our mission of disruptive innovation
Sewer heat recovery is not new. Our technology partner
has been using their proprietary ThermWin technology to harvest the thermal energy in wastewater since 2008 in Europe and since 2017 in North America. With our wastewater energy project at Toronto Western Hospital (“TWH”),the largest raw wastewater energy project in the world
Noventa has taken this proven technology to a different scale. Rebranding it as “Wastewater Energy Transfer” or “WET” to reflect our projects’ ability to provide both heating and cooling
Noventa is delivering thermal energy without Scope 1 GHG emissions.
the market for WET systems exceeds $24 billion. WET systems provide meaningful carbon reduction for dense urban centres where other technologies like Geoexchange are not viable or practical
WET systems can provide meaningful carbon reduction at cost competitive prices
Noventa’s WET systems are delivered through an Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) delivery model with no up-front capital contribution required by the customer and with a contractually guaranteed efficiency that provides greater budget certainty and peace of mind
Noventa’s WET Systems are consistently monitored to ensure that any fluctuations in sewer flows or temperatures do not affect the energy supplied to the end user. The patented
Huber RoWin® heat exchangers ensure that any odours are contained in the vessels and that handling of wastewater is avoided.
Our WET System at Toronto Western Hospital is the largest raw wastewater energy project in the world
It will provide over 19MW of heating and cooling to the hospital and displace 8400 tCO2e annually. The Wetwell and the connection to one Toronto’s large interceptor sewers is an impressive engineering accomplishment which has set the standard for other such projects
We are also developing WET Systems for other sites in Canada
the US and UK - including WET systems for the heat networks we recently acquired in Glasgow
Our successful delivery of our WET System at Toronto Western Hospital
has garnered the attention of district energy companies across North America and the UK. We are technology partners for Markham District Energy who is building a WET System to rival the size of our TWH System. We expect other DE companies to follow suit.
We are also pursuing opportunities which will combine several sources of waste heat in addition to wastewater.

has bought three heat from wastewater assets from from Scottish Water Horizons with intention to partially repower them and improve their output
the Dalmarnock Energy Centre and the Aqualibrium Energy Centre currently provide heating to district heat networks owned by Stirling Council and Clyde Gateway as well as a leisure centre owned by Argyll & Bute Council
The heat-from-wastewater technology used at the centres involves extracting heat from wastewater and using it for district heating purposes
The energy from the heat-from-wastewater facilities also provide power to wastewater treatment plants owned by Scottish Water in Stirling and Glasgow and is provided under long-term heat and power agreements
the centres will benefit from the company’s proprietary technology to reduce emissions and expand heat generation capacity
Noventa said the schemes have the potential to generate 33GWh of heat and 15GWh of power annually
the equivalent of heating and powering almost 5,000 and 1,000 average homes respectively across the UK
The company said: “At the heart of this acquisition is Noventa’s proprietary Wastewater Energy Transfer™️ (WET™️) System
which harnesses the thermal energy in wastewater - reducing carbon emissions from heating by more than 70%.”

Contemporary garage rock is giving single coil pickups a resurgence and influencing the way we play
and have recently unveiled the Noventa Range
an entirely re-modelled Fender range that feature newly-designed Fender MP-90 pickups across a variety of body shapes
Read more guitar, amp and pedal reviews here.
The Noventa range is designed for the modern player chasing modern sounds
but who may feel more at home on a vintage spec’d guitar
The entire range features Fender’s classic and comfortable body contours
If you’re a fan of Fender you’ll find a body shape and design
a guitar that is spec’d to fit your needs whether it be offset or more classic electric stylings
Here we’ll be discussing the Noventa Stratocaster
a two-pickup equipped Strat available in Crimson Transparent Red
Daphne Blue or this finish specifically: Surf Green
Beneath the gloss polyester is an alder body
bolted to a maple neck with a maple fretboard
The neck has a 9.5” radius so it feels more vintage than anything
and the vague aged maple of the neck and board is also reminiscent of older Fender guitars
The back of the neck features a nice satin finish
so your chords won’t stick like when sliding around on lacquer
and the board offers the classic bright punch that maple provides
The pickups are “Fender Noventa Single-Coil” and they provide that impossibly fat
so there’ll be no wailin’ on a two-point tremolo done here
but the 21 medium-jumbo frets feel nice beneath the strings so you can do your vibrato and bends comfortably
The 25.5” scale length is standard Fender Strat
which is offset nicely against the Surf Green
The Noventa Strat features Fender’s classic vintage style tuners and a synthetic bone nut that helps keep the guitar in tune even while bending and tremolo picking
the “Modern C” is comfortable and a welcome relief from some less comfortable vintage neck shapes
The neck is thin enough for you to get shreddy if you need to
but there’s still enough for you to grab ahold of for rhythms and big riffs
Riffs are probably where this guitar shines the most
the Fender Noventa Single-Coils offering a dark
compressed tone whether you’re in the neck or bridge position
or both if you’re in the middle of the three-way switch
formidable lead presence across the frequency spectrum
The neck position pushes the low mids a little further and the attack of the notes seems to shift slightly
The Noventa Stratocaster feels like a workhorse guitar
The Fender Noventa Single-Coils provide a wide array of sounds
dependant on your picking and playing style
offering a myriad of tones and colour even before the signal reaches your pedals or amp
The Noventa is a tribute to Fender’s ability to build high quality instruments at very affordable prices
that highlight features their audience has been asking for and moving towards
whether it be a three-pickup Jazzmaster or single-pickup Esquire-esque Telecaster provide a tool for a sound that can’t be achieved with every instrument
The range provides a specific tonal colour and texture
P-90s were some of the first pickups ever used in electric guitars in the 1940s and there’s a reason they’re still being used in modern guitars
and provide girth and ‘oomph’ where standard single coils lose out
enabling a sound that’s not quite single-coil nor humbucking
This Noventa Stratocaster specifically represents the best of the Ensenada Fender factory in Mexico
and begins to bridge a gap into quality control far beyond the price tag
For fans of classic style and a massive palette of sounds to choose from – the Noventa Series as a whole may be just the new guitar for you
Shop the Noventa range over at Fender’s website today
Tele and Jazzmaster models come equipped with all-new pickup configurations
but P-90s are comparatively rare in its designs
That changes in 2021 with the launch of the new Noventa Series
which equips iconic outlines with new single coils akin to the classic ‘middle-ground’ pickup
Stratocaster and Jazzmaster all feature Fender's new Noventa single-coil design – the company is promising “midrange bite
smooth lows” and a wide dynamic range from the new format – of which you’ll find one in the Telecaster
the made-in-Mexico guitars all feature alder bodies
there are different neck shapes for each model: the Strat packs a modern 'C'
while the Jazzmaster opts for a thick soft V
Hardware comprises a ‘cut’ Telecaster bridge (on the Telecaster
and an Adjusto-Matic bridge with floating tremolo system for the Jazzmaster
Offset fans will note that the Jazzmaster’s rhythm circuit and three-way pickup selector have been ditched in favor of a five-way Strat-style blade switch
while the one-pickup Tele has no selector at all
The Strat possesses a single volume and tone
alongside its three-position blade selector
Prices (including gigbags) and very-nice-indeed finishes for the models are as follows:
“One of the most genuinely unique guitar tones I’ve ever heard”: Submarine Pickups Subsix review
“Classic aesthetics with cutting-edge technology”: Are Seymour Duncan's new Jazzmaster Silencers the ultimate Jazzmaster pickups
“There's something really magical about it”: Bon Jovi's Phil X on why he prefers single-pickup guitars – and his one-of-a-kind neck pickup 'mods'
The Noventa Strat delivers a lot of bang for the buck and could easily be a go-to axe for players who gig in a variety of situations and need one guitar that can do it all
Fender has gone down the P-90 road in the past
beginning with the Strat-O-Sonic from 2003
which featured two Black Dove “Soapbar” pickups and a wrap-around-style Tech-Tonic bridge
and there have been various Custom Shop Teles and Strats carrying P-90s over the years
But the pickups haven’t been offered on recent production-line S and T models until the Noventa series Telecaster
and Jazzmaster landed in 2021 (accompanied by the Player Mustang 90)
All feature Fender Noventa single-coils – one
two and three respectively – as well as other elements that make them quite different animals from their classic-style counterparts
The Crimson Red Transparent Strat on review here immediately gets the point across when you see its twin pickups
truncated control complement (two knobs and a three-way selector) and a chrome-plated hardtail bridge on which the strings load Tele-style into metal ferrules on the back
The bolt-on maple neck has a very smooth satin finish and is carved into what Fender calls its Modern C profile
an inviting shape that practically begs you to play for long stretches
pau-ferro fingerboard carries 21 nicely crowned medium-jumbo frets that are trimmed on the ends for a smooth ride when sliding along the fretboard
and the synthetic bone nut received similar attention
so that it feels like part of the neck – only the top corners of the nut are a little sharp
The spot-on factory setup provides excellent playability and practically zero string buzz
At 7.28 pounds the guitar feels light and nimble
The Noventa is louder and meatier than a standard Strat
and it also reminded us a bit of the Reverend Gristle 90 in the sense that the bridge position is girthy sounding and has that slightly quacky-but-cutting texture that makes a good P-90 so cool for lead playing
The Noventa pickups also sound great combined for a full
crisp tone that’s less biting than the bridge pickup by itself
and the neck position is balanced and has plenty of top-end for solos
yet easily cops a cool jazz vibe with a downward twist of the tone knob
This streamlined Strat has a lot of tonal vibe
and it’s a gas to play thanks to its nice setup and overall attention to detail
As a do-it-all guitar that can cover a lot of bases
the Noventa Strat delivers a lot of bang for the buck and could easily be a go-to axe for players who gig in a variety of situations and need one guitar that can do it all
in many ways this new Fender fills that need
less can be more when it comes to the Stratocaster

Heading up Fender’s quirky new Noventa range
this three-pickup offset is all about blurring boundaries
But does it have the tones to back up its rebel attitude
The Noventa Telecaster only has one, so it’s really more of an Esquire, while the Stratocaster and Jazzmaster have two and three respectively
suggesting some sort of curious role-reversal… except that the pickups themselves look a lot like P-90s
Clearly these are not guitars for traditionalists
is pretty much a Jazzmaster in name only: it has the offset body shape and the familiar floating tailpiece
but the bridge is a fixed tune-o-matic type and the only switch is a five-way blade for accessing those Strat-like in-between sounds
We’re curious to find out just how Strat-like that will be. Fender isn’t saying much about the construction of these Noventa pickups, which are common to all three models, but it’s surely no coincidence that they look a great deal like Gibson’s single-coil soapbar design. A recipe for chunkier tones?
Anyway, the black covers make for a striking contrast with the mint pickguard of our Surf Green sample. This model is also available in Fiesta Red as well as a natural Walnut finish, complete with a black ’guard and pau ferro fretboard that will make time-travellers from 1974 feel right at home.
The first thing we notice when picking up this guitar is that we’d quite like to put it down again – just under 4kg is maybe only a little above average for one of Fender’s big-bodied offsets, but it’s heavy if you’re used to Strats or Teles. At least the C-shaped neck is comfortable, staying resolutely ‘medium’ all the way up to the body join (which, incidentally, looks a little gappy on the bass side of our guitar).
Then we plug in… to be greeted by a constant buzz that only stops when we touch the end of the lead, not the bridge or strings. That clearly indicates a grounding issue, which is unlikely to take much fixing but is hardly a reassuring start.
Ploughing on, we make our way through the five pickup settings without encountering any surprises – but that’s not a complaint. Fender has aimed for a genre-hopping crossover zone and hit the mark with a useful blend of classic tonal ingredients.
If you like Stratocasters, you’ll find plenty of that famous clucky clarity here. And if you like P-90s, you’ll savour the throaty thickness that these pickups add to the formula. Clean, crunchy or properly scuzzed up, it’s a decent ‘best of both worlds’ solution that still allows for something close to the full suite of pure Strat tones simply by dialling the volume back to seven or eight.
And if you like Jazzmasters? Well, there’s not a great deal of that famous midrange sweetness to be found in this guitar, and you don’t have the option of combining bridge and neck pickups for ultimate chime in the middle position. Dare we say it, you’re probably better off with the Strat model. However, if you appreciate offset stylings but have never got on with the tones or complex switching typical of vintage-style models, the Noventa Jazzmaster is well worthy of investigation.
The world’s leading authority and resource for all things guitar.
inspiring reimagining of classic Fender guitar design and might just convert those who feel regular Strat and Tele single-coils are too thin for their needs
Fresh tones that sound different but not too weird
Both offer versatility from a stripped-back format
A synchronised tremolo on the Strat would have been a cool option
Here we have one Telecaster in Vintage Blonde – butterscotch by another name – and a Strat in Daphne Blue
The single-pickup format of the Telecaster a minimalist might call back to its pre-Tele model
covering just the lower horn of the guitar
there’s something even more primal about it
reimagined with a pair of Noventa soapbar pickups at neck and bridge positions
The pickups of course draw attention to themselves
and we do wonder whether they would have looked better with plastic coverings to complement the three-ply mint green and black pickguard
but maybe this is what Fender was wanting all along – all eyes on the pickups
we are looking at a relatively conventional build otherwise
with bolt-on maple necks and maple fingerboards.
Both have satin-smooth finishes and while the Strat has a slightly slimmer ‘Modern C’ profile than the Tele’s more palm-filling ‘60s C’
there’s not that much difference in the feel between them
and a very uncontroversial 9.5mm fingerboard radius
The throw-and-go hotrod vibe continues to the hardware; the Strat is fitted with a six-bent-steel-saddle hardtail bridge
the Tele with a cut-down ashtray-style bridge with three compensated brass saddles
Tone-wise, played unplugged before those Noventa pickups are engaged, the bold ring of the Telecaster sounds very much on-brand, and it is intriguing how this will translate through a guitar amp
These Noventa models come fitted with the same vintage-style six-in-line tuners we have seen on the superlative Vintera series
while the Telecaster borrows a little design flourish from vintage P-Basses
housing its volume and tone pots on a metal control plate.
the Strat’s volume and tone controls are joined on the pickguard with a three-way pickup selector switch
with black knobs and switch tips matching the pickup covers
The satin-smooth necks ensure there won’t be any gumming up when you perspire
but Fender keeps this matte effect in the back office so to speak; both the headstock and the fingerboards have a gloss polyurethane finish.
the Telecaster’s neck hints ever so gently at a V profile and is exceptionally comfortable
While the Strat does feel a little more modern
benefitting from a more-than-playable factory setup
Where things get weird – and by design – is when the amplifier comes into play
These might have familiar names on the headstock but good luck getting a sound of them that would betray their designation in a blind sound test
The Noventa series seems to dare you to go straight for the overdrive pedal and that’s a good place to explore the Telecaster’s charms.
It has always been the great primitive guitar design but with the extra meat of the Noventa soapbar pickups
it has a density and a weight to its sound
The curled lip of rock ’n’ roll twang
but there’s a brawny heat to the Telecaster that deserves a double-take of the headstock
it’s all but a carbon copy of the Tele but the extra two positions greatly expand your options.
Everything we could say about the bridge pickup’s versatility should you go looking for it can be reprised for the neck pickup and the mix position
it’s difficult to tear yourself away from the neck position
and shows up very well with a little drive on the amp
The middle position has a little more of that chewy
nasal midrange that really comes alive with a gritty tube amp
Clean things up and you have the benefit of single-coil definition with extra heat and width – tones that can only be enhanced with spring reverb and tremolo
or by the three-dimensional voodoo of slap-back echo.
Punks, indie players, classic rockers and off-script blues players will love these two. Fender fans will love the feel, and the familiar touchstones – 25.5” scale, bolt-on maple necks, playability – but everyone will surely get a rush from hearing something so unexpected
yet so musical coming out of the speaker.

While this might immediately bring to mind images of Kevin Shields or Robert Johnson (guitarists whose reputation and significance to the culture continues to percolate outside the mainstream
but whose contributions can never be underestimated)
this same ‘cult’ status can also be applied to important and influential icons within the gear space itself
This goes for all the coveted parts and components
Mastery bridges and quite possibly the biggest cult hero of them all
What makes the P-90 such an interesting case study has as much to do with it’s gestation as it does with the politics and inherently DIY nature of its rise to prominence
Originally developed in the 1940s by Gibson for their jazz guitars and hollowbodys
the P-90 was a slightly more mellow take on the single-coil pickups of the day
the obvious evolutionary mid-point between Gibson’s traditional
chirpy single coil ‘blade’ pickups and the thick humbucking tones that came to define the brand throughout the ’60s and ’70s
Gibson relegated the P-90s to their budget models like the ES-330 and Les Paul Jr
but the shortage of P-90 equipped options and the uniqueness and desirability of the tone itself
inadvertently set the wheels in spin for a whole manner of aftermarket P-90 installations and custom jobs with guitarists chucking the beloved pickup in any body (or brand) that took their fancy
This brings us to Fender’s new Noventa range and its significance in the space
Cleverly using the Spanish word for the number ninety
the Noventa range is undoubtedly inspired by these kind of Frankenstein creations with the Jazzmaster sporting three P-90 inspired Noventa pickups
It’s the Fender Noventa Telecaster that most instantly brings to mind these awesome home-builds of yesteryear with its instantly vintage vibe
vintage hardware ( including a “Cut” Telecaster bridge with brass saddles)
the Fender Noventa single coil bridge pickup specifically designed for this release
This beauty in Vintage Blonde has a gorgeous slightly transparent finish
It boasts a uniqueness in appearance with its not-quite-Cabronita style pick guard and almost tear-drop shaped knob plating
I noticed and appreciated the ’60s “C”-shaped maple neck with a satin finish as it has an incredibly sturdy feel
really filling the palm for a tight grip of the neck but a breeze to glide along thanks to the satin finish
I felt far more comfortable in playing heavier styles than I normally would on a Telecaster generally
the block cut body caters to the sturdy feel
Its 9.5” radius maple fingerboard is described as “an ideal balance between vintage and modern playability” and it does show
feeling comfortable for chording and equally for more intricate work
The 21 medium jumbo frets allow for easy bending and neck mobility to really creep up the fingerboard and the bulked neck allows it to take a bit of a beating
as the Noventa is very responsive to how hard you play
one tone and one volume knob this guitar is mind-blowingly versatile
offering a huge range in tones with a noticeable saturation that only becomes greater the harder your attack
This translates to an extremely characterful voicing
but thanks to its intuitive tone pot and aforementioned touch sensitivity
allows for plenty of control as to how much of this character is imparted on your clean sound
gain and saturation endemic of the Noventa pickups
reminded me a lot of the kinds of gain dependent saturation that you are more likely to find in hi end studio preamps and compression workflows
Whereas standard single-coils may lean towards harshness when played like this
saturated and compressed the harder they are struck
in turn making for a driven sound that is both full bodied
with enough clarity and chime to still appease the single coil fraternity
This ability to tame harsh transients also means that the Noventa Tele takes to effects
(especially mid heavy ones like overdrive and chorus)
it’s bridge position providing ample clarity and definition
dulcet voicing being ideal for thick driven tones
Another really nice touch is the fact that its classy
classic “cut” Telecaster bridge with brass barrel saddles allows you to string through the bridge
or you can string through the body of the guitar
especially with its Fender standard bolt-on neck
It’s not crazy to say that every recording guitarist should have at least one P-90 equipped guitar in their quiver
You never know when it will get you out of a creative corner
or prove the perfect compromise for when traditional single coil and humbucker tones just aren’t cutting it
It’s this application that is the Noventa Telecaster’s natural habitat
excellent ergonomics and high quality components making it both a highly valued point of difference and the perfect middle ground for anytime the garden variety tones just aren’t cutting it
don’t be surprised to see the Noventa Series garner their own cult following in the not too distant future

the Jazzmaster has been bestowed with a much cooler identity thanks to its association with seminal alternative
indie and grunge outfits of the ’80s and ’90s
They now look to keep the ball rolling even further with their new limited edition Noventa Jazzmaster: a triple P-90 equipped model that serves as one of the most practical
no-fuss Jazzmasters ever produced by the brand
Fender have obviously designed the Noventa range with live performance in mind
and that ethos is immediately apparent when you’ve got the Noventa Jazzmaster in your hands
The offset contours of the guitar’s alder body make for a comfortable
ergonomic playing experience whether you’re seated or standing
while the maple neck features a Modern C neck profile with a slight taper down towards the high frets
ensuring your wrist remains fatigue-free and ready to shred at any given minute
the Noventa range makes use of either maple or pau ferro for a fretboard tonewood
the latter of which possesses a similar look
This is complemented with a 9.5″ fretboard radius and 21 medium jumbo frets
both of which help give the guitar a much more contemporary feel without compromising on the classic aesthetics you’d expect from a Jazzmaster
bending is a breeze on this neck and the size of the frets gives you a no-choke guarantee
while the tapered neck and fretboard radius ensures that chords and lead lines are easily manageable
If there are any two aspects of the Jazzmaster’s design that are deemed as contentious among some players
it’d surely be the guitar’s tremolo and switching system
Despite playing a pivotal role in the birth of shoegaze
the floating tremolo system is prone to causing a nuisance when pushed too hard by making the strings pop out of the saddle
while the roll-off Lead and Rhythm circuit controls located on the top bout of the guitar can be confusing for some players who are uninitiated with its function
Fender strategically remedy these quirks to make for a guitar that’s far more practical for those players seeking to enjoy the Jazzmaster’s slick design without navigating the nuances of the original
The tremolo system is paired with a study Adjust-o-Matic style bridge for superior tuning stability
whereas the finicky switching controls are subbed off in favour of a simple five-way pickup selector switch
while not exactly a groundbreaking development from Fender
definitely benefit the overall playability of the guitar
and help make the Noventa Jazzmaster an instrument that everyone can enjoy
Shoegazers will be stoked to hear that the tremolo arm is still very capable of all the flutter-strumming you can throw at it
while the inclusion of a five-way pickup selector switch makes for a logical modification to suit the needs of the modern player
Another of the Noventa Jazzmaster’s biggest draw-cards is the inclusion of three Noventa M-P90 pickups in the neck
These pickups are designed to deliver extra output
and boast some rather impressive touch sensitivity that can really benefit the dynamics of your picking technique
and they sound absolutely glorious when saturated in a thick fuzz or treated with warbling modulation pedals
The neck pickup features similar sonic characteristics to that of the Stratocaster’s first pickup position
delivering crisp cleans that lend themselves to slippery leads and soulful rhythm playing
see the middle pickup come into play and inject some fat warmth into your tone
and it’s these two positions you’ll likely opt for when playing single-note runs or jazzy chord voicings
For those seeking a little more grit and twang from your tone
you’ll be immediately rewarded when you flip over to positions four and five
aggressive rhythm playing and twangy leads alike
It’s worth noting that these MP-90 pickups are hotter than your typical Fender single-coils
so you might need to reach for your tone or volume knob to tame some spiky tones on occasion
Another key feature of the Noventa range is the exciting array of finishes each guitar comes with
and it’s arguable that the Jazzmaster boasts the best looking colours of the bunch
The particular model that we reviewed came out of the box in a classic ’70s-inspired Walnut finish to accompany its pau ferro fretboard
but if that’s not quite up your alley
there’s also Fiesta Red and Surf Green options with maple fretboards to choose from
Even when stripped down to its bare essentials
the Jazzmaster is a guitar that continues to impress and inspire
and the new Noventa model functions as clear proof of this
It’s a killer hybrid of vintage and modern
packing red-hot tones via its three MP-90 pickups and exuding sophistication and class thanks to its sleek design
making for a wonderful choice for a players on the hunt for a gigging workhorse guitar
The Tele is bonkers good with a small set of pedals into a simple amp
And if you’re not a neck-pickup person
it’s all you could ever need – especially if you’re canny with the controls
But with the superb extra tones the Strat delivers
Strat arguably not as happy visually as the Tele
Fender continues to mine the well of potential so brilliantly presented in its most famous models
These guitars are made in Fender’s Mexican plant in Ensenada
with the range’s name translating as Spanish for ‘ninety’
since the guitars come equipped with P-90-style pickups
But why would you buy a Fender guitar with a Gibson-style pickup? Well, putting a Les Paul Goldtop’s P-90 in a Telecaster isn’t going to make it sound like a Lester
There’s too much going on with the construction and materials for that to be so.
But it does make for a new and interesting sound
The simplicity of the Telecaster means it’s the perfect vehicle for all kinds of experimentation
as we’ve seen with the earlier Cabronita series.
The Stratocaster
is a trickier proposition: its design is so perfect that you mess with it at your peril
And we feel that those large black P-90-style pickups (the neck one is a bit too big for that space) look rather
Cream would perhaps have been a less drastic choice aesthetically
With our stalwart Blues Junior and a small but tasty set of pedals at the ready
let’s give the charms of both guitars the opportunity to win us over
We’ve remained highly impressed by guitars built at Fender’s Ensenada facility
Fit and finish are rarely less than flawless
and they are generally playable straight out of the box
with the Tele’s polyester Vintage Blonde gloss as flat as glass
newest banknote into the neck-body gap – and you couldn’t say that for many 70s USA Fenders
Deemed to give a less springy or bright sound than ash
you can clearly see its grain through the finish here
Alder Fenders with rosewood ’boards are generally believed to sound fatter than their ash and maple counterparts
so this alder P-90 maple combination could be interesting.
Fender has chosen maple for the Noventas’ necks
and here we see a glued-on maple fingerboard
A certain well-known Fender user from the 60s played a Strat with this construction at Woodstock
and this writer once owned a beautiful Sunburst ’68 Tele built this way
this means no walnut skunk-stripe or headstock fillet
and truss-rod adjustment is done at the body end
is much more of a palaver than locating it at the headstock
The neck itself is finished in satin urethane
with only the headstock facing done in gloss
we have six-a-side tuners in the classic Kluson style
early P-Bass-style control plate with chromed
plus a cut-down Telecaster bridge with three intonation compensated brass saddles
This will go down well with Tele aficionados
who generally prefer the tone of brass over steel
but often complain about compromised intonation
This arrangement fixes both issues at a swipe
with its top curve in the opposite direction to that of a regular Tele ’guard
A single Noventa P-90-style pickup and single volume and tone controls are all you get with regards to electrics
the Noventa’s look is a triumph of perfectly executed simplicity
Whether it’s the overly large neck pickup compared with the slimmer
the fact that we’re not used to the look of a two-pickup Strat
or simply the fact that we’re not yet visually attuned to it
the Noventa Strat is not quite the happy marriage that we see in the Tele
it’s clearly the more versatile instrument of the two
since the next person might love this and abhor the basic-looking Tele
the two instruments have the same body and neck woods and finishes
and the glossy Daphne Blue of the Strat certainly looks smart against the translucent Vintage Blonde of the Tele
the pickguard is regular three-ply mint green and black
while the bridge is the vintage hardtail style with through-body stringing and carrying half a dozen bent steel saddles
All the other usual Strat attributes apply
such as the recessed jack and contoured body
The pair of Noventa soapbar pickups is mated to single volume and tone controls
given that both guitars fall under one Noventa umbrella
that the necks would feature the same carve
the Tele has a ‘60s C’ and the Strat a ‘Modern C’ profile
the Strat’s is slightly more slender front to back
although both share the same fingerboard dimensions: 42mm at the synthetic bone nut
Both instruments also boast the modern 241mm fingerboard radius
it’s 24mm for the Tele and 23mm for the Strat
While the Tele has the merest hint of a ‘V’ section
Fender states it fits Noventas with 250R 0.10-gauge strings
but these instruments feel loose and easy under the fingers
even with the 648mm (25.5-inch) scale length
the Tele’s neck seems at one with the guitar as a whole
and with that slack feel it’s as smooth as syrup
The big frets and flatter fingerboard add up to a contemporary feel on a guitar that looks to be from another era
With that millimetre 12th-fret difference and the marginally more slender feel overall
the Strat feels like an even more modern beast
its body shape is so much more streamlined so perhaps that’s subliminally adding to the vibe
With the Blues Junior’s valves and transformers fully warmed up
Try as hard as you like and you won’t make this Noventa sound like a Telecaster
This single-coil pickup with its considerably bigger footprint offers a different kind of twang when turned down to 6 or 7; back this off to 2 or 3 and big
open strums sound almost acoustic in nature
but pull back even a touch and it’s a bit more subtle
but perhaps more SG as it remains highly expressive but a little less dense
Knock the tone back to 7 and we’re in our element. Add some Keeley-modded Boss DD-3 delay and it’s sonic heaven
We’ve not had this much fun in ages
The Strat’s bridge pickup is much of a muchness
so we’ll concentrate on the neck and both units together
Keeping the Fulltone OCD on and starting at the neck
the old clichés such as ‘flutey’ and ‘woody’ come tripping out
it’s almost liquid under the fingers
play with the tone controls and you’ll find ‘woman’ tone
the Money For Nothing sound and so much more
Off with the drive and a flip to middle position – rockabilly lives here
Chuck on the slapback and hours of fun are to be had
Bring back the gain and it’s Jimmy Page and Brian May territory
Both players chose ‘honky’ sounds for certain things
But for pure versatility the Strat wins – and one can begin to forgive that bulky neck pickup due to what it brings
Fender Mexico’s excellence and consistency in build and finish added greatly to the expectation
But it was plugging in that made us realise just how good these guitars are.

An innovative German-developed wastewater-to-energy technology system is coming to Toronto in a very big way and the cited benefits include reduced air pollution and a cleaner climate
In what is being described as “delivery of the world’s largest raw wastewater energy transfer,” Huber Technology’s patented ThermWin system will be installed at the University Health Network’s Toronto Western Hospital
Delivered by Toronto-based Noventa Energy Partners
an alternative energy provider which is the exclusive North American distributor
the ThermWin system will supply the hospital with 1.8 billion kilowatt-hours of low-carbon energy from raw wastewater over the life of 30-year agreement
Noventa says that amounts to approximately 90 per cent of the hospital’s space heating and cooling requirements
Other benefits include the reduction of the hospital’s carbon dioxide emissions by 250,000 tonnes and savings of more than 141 kilowatt hours of electricity
by a $3.3 million federal government grant
Bird Construction is the contractor overseeing the $38-million project which is just getting underway and is expected to take a year to complete
The project encompasses the construction of an underground vault which will house 16 of Huber’s RoWin heat exchangers
the excavation of a 45-metre-deep wet well that will be connected to the sewers
and the retrofit of the hospital’s existing steam system to a low-temperature
the coarse solids will be retained and sent back to the sewer
while the screened wastewater will be transported to the heat exchangers
A major feature of the air-tight heat exchanges is a self-cleaning system
“Wastewater is an untapped renewable energy source that is underutilized in North America
This is one of the first projects of this scale to use raw municipal wastewater from a sewer to provide low carbon heating and cooling to a building,” says Noventa’s CEO and founder Dennis Fotinos
After learning about the technology a few years ago
he conducted research into it and then finalized the exclusive distribution rights with Huber
and then we submitted an unsolicited proposal to the (Toronto Western) hospital,” says the company’s chief technology officer and head of operations
“After doing its due diligence the hospital gave us the go-ahead.”
Noventa took the design to the 30 per cent stage
with the design being finalized by project partners MCW Consultants and Stantec
Operational savings will be further enhanced by Noventa’s own patent-pending Domestic Feedwater Supplementary Cooling
a process improvement that will provide cooler condenser water during the summer months by rejecting additional heat to the domestic hot water pre-heating system
the Noventa system will be fully backed up with natural gas generators to allow a continuous supply of hot and chilled water through the distribution network
A number of other operational safeguards have been designed into the system
“I think it will be spectacular,” says Condie
when asked about the future of the ThermWin technology in North America
Hospitals are major energy consumers and they’re looking for ways to improve heating and ventilation
In a ZOOM interview from its head office in Germany
Huber sales manager Simon Schmausser said the family-owned company
has always been an innovator in the field of drinking water and wastewater treatment
“We were looking for municipal systems to be more energy efficient,” says Schmausser on the factors that led to the development of the ThermWin technology
That was approximately 10 years ago and now the technology is used in buildings around the world

what the mall formerly known as the Veneto Designer Outlet has shed the name of the region where it’s located
the number of outlet shops and restaurants has grown substantially
There are now more than 150 stores and a dozen restaurants
nearly a tenfold increase in the number of vendors since the mall’s debut in 2008
It might be the place to go if you’re based at Aviano or Vicenza and you’re really into brand names
New Balance and Puma are all within a few feet of one another
Versace and Gucci top the list for shoppers looking for Italian fashion and accessories
There’s also a number of brands familiar in North America
Prices at many places there are discounted about 30% from what the same merchandise fetches at stores elsewhere in Italy
Although I’m not the target audience for the mall
window shopping and occasionally entering a store with the possibility of buying something
Besides Americans and Italians living nearby
the outlet mall also appears to be popular with travelers along the A4
the main east-west artery through northern Italy
It’s always easy to spot cars from Eastern European countries on the highway
and there is no shortage of them in the expansive parking lots at the mall
which is operated by the British company McArthur Glen
is unrivaled by either of the two competitors closer to Italy’s border with Slovenia
The outlet stores here focus heavily on clothes and accessories
but a few shops specialize in kitchen items
There’s also a good assortment of restaurants and stands offering snacks
Insider tip for shoppers: Stop by guest services
and you’ll likely get a stamp for an additional 10% off that’s honored by many stores
Cost: Parking is free in the mall lots; tolls on the A4 are 3 euros each way from Aviano and slightly more from Vicenza

Tantalum miner Noventa (AIM:NVTA) announced this week that its sidelined Marropino mine in Mozambique will once again be churning out tantalum concentrate
By Melissa Pistilli—Exclusive to Tantalum Investing News
and Proactive Investors reported Noventa’s shares rallied about 18 percent after the news broke Monday of this week
In 2008, the Marropino mine was considered the world’s second-largest tantalum mining operation, according to Tom Vulcan
In May of 2009, Noventa placed the mine on care and maintenance to preserve cash resources in the midst of the worldwide economic downturn and said it wouldn’t be able to restart without more investment
The company’s share price by this point had fallen 95 percent over the past year
In July 2009
a new board took over the company “with the goal of implementing a turnaround strategy.” Based on the positive outlook for tantalum demand
the new board decided later that year to reopen the Marropino mine in the spring of 2010
Noventa wants to avoid the mistakes made in the past this time around
The current board “believes that the approach that was historically taken to bring the mine into production was incorrect and not as effective as it should have been,” Proactive Investors sub-editor Andre Lamberti reported in August of 2009
“Each element of the process from extraction through processing and distributing to clients is being examined to identify and eliminate losses and inefficiencies
The reserves are being re-examined and assays of the open mine are being taken to verify the ore projections to compare historical assay data with fresh assays.”
Noventa began implementing its three-stage process for bringing the mine back to its former glory
The first phase starts with reprocessing mine tailings
then processing previously mined oversize material in phase two
before moving on to processing new material
is slated to begin at the end of 2010 and will involve higher grade tantalum from the main ore body
Noventa expects to present its shareholders with a newly developed 3-year plan sometime in the next few months
and advancing its Mutala and Morrua properties

At the heart of the scandal engulfing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government are allegations that it attempted to politically interfere with the prosecution of Québec engineering giant SNC-Lavalin
We continue to learn more about the allegations. Both Gerald Butts, Trudeau’s former principal secretary, and Michael Wernick, Clerk of the Privy Council, have testified about the former attorney general’s allegations to the House of Commons Justice Committee
denying Jody Wilson-Raybould was pressured to allow SNC-Lavalin to avoid criminal prosecution
The prime minister also says he was unaware she ever felt pressured.
But we should not reflexively impugn laws that many Canadians might now associate with SNC-Lavalin
including those that could have terminated its prosecution
The anti-foreign bribery law that SNC-Lavalin is charged with violating, and the remediation agreementthat Wilson-Raybould testified that she was pressured to pursue
are both promising pieces of Canadian policy
They’re aimed at combating corruption in international business and corporate crime
While some have raised questions about why Canada prohibits its businesses from bribery overseas — particularly in countries where bribery can be common — Canada’s efforts to fight foreign bribery are not only required
Foreign bribery prohibitions focus on only one side of a bribery transaction — the “supply” rather than the “demand” for bribery — but they’re needed to address corruption in international business
Host states to international business can prosecute public officials for accepting bribes
but institutional weaknesses and complicity of government officials in corruption can often make this difficult in practice
Prohibitions of foreign bribery by wealthy OECD states like Canada that have both significant regulatory capacity and active engagement with the international economy can fill the void. They can curb “the export of corruption globally,” according to Transparency International
a well-respected anti-corruption organization
This is all the more necessary for Canada — a leading player in the global extractive sector, well-known for its high risk of corruption
There is evidence that anti-foreign bribery laws are working. A recent study finds that “even minimal enforcement” of these laws makes a corporation less likely to pay bribes abroad
Canada and all states stand to benefit if corruption in international business is reduced. The cost of corruption is estimated at five per cent of global gross domestic product
Reducing corruption globally is also expected to advance the UN’s sustainable development goals and reduce security risks, not to mention improve the daily lives of citizens in two-thirds of the world’s countries with high levels of corruption
The remediation agreements that the Prime Minister’s Office allegedly pressured Wilson-Raybould to consider were introduced into law in June 2018
A remediation agreement allows a corporation accused of certain criminal offences
to obtain a stay of proceedings if the corporation agrees to specific penalties
SNC-Lavalin was one of many businesses that supported remediation agreements, as did Transparency International Canada
Looking at international trends can help us understand why remediation agreements may have been attractive to domestic organizations and the government
As I’ve described elsewhere
Canada originally implemented its international anti-foreign bribery obligations using exclusively criminal-law tools — criminal prohibitions and criminal investigations and prosecutions
Other OECD states used a broader range of tools
including civil or administrative prohibitions and diversionary resolution mechanisms like we see in the deferred prosecution agreements that are common in the United States
the traditional criminal-law tools that Canada had relied upon pose real challenges
Obtaining evidence to meet the high threshold of criminal guilt can be particularly difficult when the defendant is a corporation
It’s even more demanding for a cross-border crime like foreign bribery where evidence and witnesses can be an ocean away
The OECD has criticized Canada for its “lagging” enforcement of anti-foreign bribery laws. With a new round of OECD reviews under way
Canada is likely to face more international pressure
Ottawa was able to signal its commitment to fighting foreign bribery
It also adopted a resolution tool — remediation agreements — that could ease some of its enforcement challenges
The availability of remediation agreements provides an incentive to corporations to self-report wrongdoing and co-operate in any investigation
Such agreements also encourage reforms to corporate policy that can prevent criminal wrongdoing in the first place
it’s crucial that remediation agreements operate as one enforcement tool within a broader regime that includes traditional criminal prosecutions
The Trudeau government appears to have been well aware of the need to use remediation agreements judiciously
The government solicited input during public consultations and identified criteria in the Criminal Code that would allow a prosecutor to invite a corporation to negotiate a remediation agreement
These criteria include conditions that would weigh in favour of such an agreement
such as whether the corporation self-reported to authorities or made efforts to prevent future wrongdoing
But other criteria — including whether the corporation faces allegations
sanctions or convictions for other criminal offences —would add up on the other side of the ledger
The Criminal Code also identifies criteria that “the prosecutor must not consider.” Specifically
“the national economic interest” and “the identity of the organization” are not to be weighed if the corporation
By adding remediation agreements to a legislative framework that sets clear criteria for eligibility
Canadian law has the potential to improve upon deferred prosecution agreements
and lack such explicit legislative guidance
The eligibility criteria set out in the Criminal Code had been considered by Canadian prosecutors when they decided against allowing SNC-Lavalin to negotiate a remediation agreement
Any political interference in this determination would undermine the law’s safeguards to ensure that remediation agreements are used judiciously and the promise made by such agreements to encourage good corporate behaviour
And so political interference not only threatens prosecutorial independence and the rule of law
but also the potential of the new enforcement tool for corporate wrongdoing that the Trudeau government created

Despite claims processing being at the heart of the what insurers do
legacy systems abound and some claims still arrive by mail
up to to 80 percent of all premiums are spent on claim payments and associated charges
which is important since pricing and the handling of claims are two of the biggest factors in customer retention
[Also: Payers look to 3rd parties for claims processing, customer management]
a principal with Strategy& in Chicago and an expert in the health payer practice
said for insurers to be more efficient and to trim costs
they should start by simplifying the upstream complexity to make the downstream process easier
This means having clear contracts and medical policies for providers to send in the correct information
and for the system to understand what it is being asked to do
Claims come in electronically through an electronic data interchange channel
especially in rural areas where providers may not be equipped with electronic channels
The paper is scanned or entered into the system
CEO Doug Klinger of the information technology company Zelis Healthcare
recommends the use of electronic claim submissions to reduce the administrative burden and improves payment turnaround time for providers and payers
the claim gets to the insurer at this point it has entered the payer value chain
Best practice is to have an auto-adjudication rate upwards of 85 percent
This is for claims to go through system without human touch
An auto-adjudicated claim costs health insurers cents on the dollar
while one that needs human intervention costs about $20
There's also stiff penalties in some states on claims that take longer than 30 days to process
The claim goes through the first round of checks for data to see if key fields are missing
Besides having claims come in electronically and on paper
providers are also sending claims in different formats to their various payers
though there is work being done to get there
there isn't one universal way of sending the information," Noventa said
or more precise information on the procedure
are also reasons for the claim to be spit out
Providers need to clean claims with no administrative or coding errors to improve payment turnaround time
Insurers have a primary administrative platform and many also have separate platforms dedicated for government or retail claims
"That can really complicate things further," Noventa said
The platform tries to adjudicate the claim automatically
It retrieves the provider contract and agreed-to rates and checks these against medical policy rules
many things can happen and things can go wrong," Noventa said
because it will save time later when the same error rejects the claim further downstream
is to enforce certain rules with providers at this point about what information is needed to continue processing the claim
Klinger recommends payers use data scrubbing and clinical reviews to ensure proper billed charges
using a claim system with routing intelligence and connectivity to vendors
and one that references historical and geographic claim data ensure consistency in billed charges
the claim goes into the pending file and needs to be looked at manually
the system is programmed to kick it out as a pend claim so it can be viewed manually
Noventa said insurers need to determine whether it's less expensive and more efficient to have claims processing done by a vendor
but replacing a legacy system can cost upwards of $200 million
payers still struggle with loading contracts into the system
There's also the migration of data from the old platform that needs to be mapped in the correct way
and accumulators that count the number of visits members have tallied in connected their benefits
"For that reason a lot of payers stick to legacy platforms," Noventa said
"Every time they try to improve the system
Smaller Blue plans and other regional plans try to get together to build capabilities
"It's a real challenge for small plans," Noventa said
This brings the challenges to find like-minded plans."
insurers looked at claims after they were paid to catch waste or fraud
"Today we are seeing in technology, the ability to do sophisticated analytics," Noventa said
"Payers are looking at payment integrity to catch anomalies
This is where we're seeing meaningful investments being made."
The third level of decision-making involves working more efficiently, perhaps using digital lean techniques
Toyota used lean to create a different way of working with suppliers
in which the suppliers became part of the value chain to drive improvement
Insurers can use lean techniques to give incentives for providers to be invested in claims process improvement
"It's a little bit of what needs to happen," Noventa said

Fender have revealed a brand new range of Noventa guitars
decking out three of their most popular solid body models with P90 pickups and eye-catching finishes
The Noventa Series is a Made in Mexico line that sees Fender revise the Telecaster
Stratocaster and Jazzmaster to unlock a wholly different range of tones
including 9.5″ radius fretboards with 21 medium jumbo frets and maple necks
and feature simplified appointments to offer something totally unique to the modern player
the Noventa Telecaster seemingly takes cues from the popular Cabronita model
offering a single MP-90 pickup in the bridge position and two controls for volume and tone
Other unique features include a simplified bridge and cut-down pickguard
resulting in a rough-and-ready workhorse that looks perfect for raucous punk and rhythm playing
With a hardtail bridge and two MP-90s in the neck and bridge position
the Noventa Stratocaster puts a distinctive spin on the classic Fender model to appeal to a different
which features three MP-90 pickups to give it a striking aesthetic that’d be surely matched by its tonal versatility
While Fender have done away with the usual Jazzmaster roller controls in favour of a three-way pickup selector switch and tone and volume knobs
the Noventa Jazzmaster still retains the standard Jazzmaster tremolo
albeit with an adjust-o-matic bridge for superior tuning stability
Fiesta Red and the cool vintage Walnut finish

Celebrating the groundbreaking of the WET system at Toronto Western Hospital
President & CEO of University Health Network (UHN)
UHN broke ground Monday on the world’s largest raw wastewater energy transfer (WET) system
bringing Toronto Western Hospital (TWH) one step closer to reducing its carbon emissions by the equivalent of more than 1,800 cars a year
renewable energy company Noventa Energy Partners
Vancity Community Investment Bank (VCIB) and Enbridge Gas were at the groundbreaking event to celebrate the start of construction on the innovative project
The WET System will use thermal energy from wastewater flowing through a nearby municipal sewer to supply up to 90 per cent of the hospital’s heating and cooling needs
significantly reducing use of existing electric and natural gas systems
the site’s direct greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by about 10,000 metric tonnes each year – more than 60 per cent of UHN’s overall direct emissions and the equivalent of removing 1,811 cars from the road
we know climate change is a major threat to health,” Kevin Smith
said at the event across the street from TWH and in front of the Toronto Public Library where crews have begun digging the wetwell that will access wastewater from the sewer below
“Today’s groundbreaking is a major milestone that furthers our commitment in delivering A Healthier World – through a sustainable environment.”
Mayor Tory called the project “a great initiative that focuses on the need to address climate change in our everyday lives and the effort needed by both the private and public sector to work together to address the impacts of climate change
“My hope is that the success of this project will see us implementing similar technologies and initiatives across the city as we continue to meet our climate change goals,” he said
Construction crews – lead by Noventa and UHN’s Facilities Management – Planning
Redevelopment & Operations (FM-PRO) Department – will continue to dig the wetwell so it’s 35-feet in diameter and 165 feet deep
They will then install the WET System that separates solids at the sewer level
allowing only sieved wastewater to be pumped up and into sealed
before it provides heating and cooling to the hospital
said the project is a “natural fit” for the organization
“We have a strong culture of sustainability
thanks to the tremendous efforts of our Energy & Environment team
who have helped us become a top energy performer among our peers,” he said
the team has completed 340 energy projects
which has already reduced greenhouse gas emissions by more than 25 per cent
