On the centenary of the first edition of Ossi di Seppia
a collection that marked a turning point in twentieth-century Italian poetry
Palazzo Ducale in Genoa is hosting the exhibition Meriggiare pallido e assorto
Eugenio Montale: 100 Images for 100 Years of Ossi di Seppia
which can be visited from May 13 to June 29
curated by Ilaria Bonacossa and Paolo Verri with Michela Murialdo
offers a visual journey composed of one hundred photographs
three young Italian authors entrusted with the task of translating the spirit of Montale’s work into images. The initiative is the result of a collaboration between Fondazione Arnoldo and Alberto Mondadori
Palazzo Ducale Fondazione per la Cultura and Electa
with the support of Strategia Fotografia 2024
promoted by the General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture
Underlying the project is a clear idea: to reread one of the founding works of modern opera through a contemporary visual language
taken after a careful study of Montale’s texts
offer a subjective reworking of the landscapes evoked in the verses of Ossi di Seppia
relating the poetic gaze of the early 20th century to a current visual sensibility
The photographs in the exhibition interpret the symbolic and perceptual structure of the places of Montale’s imagination
Positano and Legnani chose to move between close observation and a broad gaze on the landscape
composing a visual narrative that explores the unstable relationship between man and the natural environment
urban and terrestrial details-become fragments through which to read the transformation of matter and time
elements also central to the Ligurian author’s poetics
The final shot of the exhibition is an emblematic photograph: the portrait of Eugenio Montale next to the hoopoe
An image that restores the public and private face of the poet
and ideally completes the visual path of the exhibition
a sensibility akin to that which pervades Montale’s verses
The approach is based on a deeper correspondence between the image and the text
between the physicality of the landscape and the existential tensions of the poem
contributes to defining a sensitive map of the work
where the natural environment takes on the role of an emotional mirror
Photography thus becomes not only a document
Completing the exhibition project is a series of lectures designed to offer further keys to interpreting Montali’s text and his cultural legacy
The first meeting is scheduled for Tuesday
one of the most influential writers and literary critics on the Italian scene
in an appointment that aims to reflect on the forms of contemporary poetic saying in light of Montale’s legacy
The exhibition is thus articulated as a multi-level journey: on the one hand
the visual investigation conducted by the photographers; on the other
the discussion with scholars and authors who
seek to restore the complexity and topicality of Ossi di Seppia
including original editions of the collection
which make it possible to follow the evolution of Montale’s poetic work until 1975
the year in which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature
The documentary value of these objects dialogues with contemporary images
establishing a bridge between the forms of memory and the possibilities of artistic interpretation
The decision to entrust the visual narrative to three young photographers
with different but complementary approaches
The layout suggests a non-linear reading of the work
as in Montalian verse is an active presence
an ambiguous entity that reflects and distorts human experience

Ossi joined the Mercer County Sheriff's Office in 2017
sniff out drugs and conduct rescue missions
CELINA - After serving the Mercer County Sheriff's Office well
K-9 officer Ossi is retiring and going to live out his golden years with his handler
Mercer County Sheriff Doug Timmerman plans to replace Ossi
but for a completely different purpose - to sniff out drugs and other contraband brought into the Mercer County jail
Timmerman recently told Mercer County commissioners that one of the sheriff's office's two K-9s - Ossi - is nearing the end of his service life and set to retire soon
deputy Patrick Forsthoefel is being promoted to sergeant in the civil division
that a supervisor is not allowed to be a K-9 officer," Timmerman said
Commissioners last week agreed to sell Ossi to Forsthoefel for $1
citing a section of Ohio Revised Code permitting the transaction
Forsthoefel will assume all responsibility for Ossi and is required to execute a release of liability form with the county
"If the dog goes home and bites somebody after Patrick owns it
that's on Patrick," Timmerman told commissioners
he absorbs all that from this point forward."
Ossi will live out his golden years with handler Patrick Forsthoefel
who is being promoted to sergeant in the sheriff's civil division
commissioners facilitated then-Sheriff Jeff Grey's plans to add a second K-9 to enhance the office's capabilities
approving the purchase of Ossi from Von der Haus Gill German Shepherds of Wapakoneta
which was paid through the sheriff's office canine account
The sheriff's office's K-9 units help carry out search warrants
Commissioners last week also agreed to Timmerman's request to purchase a sniffer dog to begin taking over the function of an aging
contraband-detecting body scanner that could cost around $200,000 to replace
Commissioners approved a $14,500 quote from Shallow Creek Kennels of Sharpsville
for a sniffer dog - likely a German shorthaired pointer best suited for the task - equipment and four weeks of training and lodging for a corrections officer who would be paired with the dog
The Celina Moose donated $14,500 to cover the entire cost of acquiring the dog
Training is set to take place in September
and I also think we can save money in the long run
and it'd be more effective than spending all that money up front on another body scanner that they can say is going to be fantastic
County commissioners in 2017 approved Grey's request to purchase a body scanner system for $118,750 plus an extended warranty for $43,750
Commissioners chose to purchase the unit from OD Security North America of Daniel Island
The sheriff's office is still paying a $10,000 annual service fee on the body scanner
Grey said at the time that as more drugs are making their way into the jail
it was necessary to follow the lead of other state correctional facilities and acquire a body scanner
Before being processed through intake at the Mercer County jail
all incoming inmates are screened for contraband hidden inside or upon their person with the body scanner
according to the most current annual report on the jail's website
Inmates are asked to stand facing away from the scanner as it makes an image of their fully clothed bodies
"The body scanner was brought in during the heroin epidemic because of … arrestees hiding drugs in their body cavities," Timmerman said
"We all know the amount of liability that can happen in a jail
We certainly do not want an inmate to get sideways
the body scanner is cumbersome and nearing the point of obsolescence
"The body scanner takes up a huge footprint in there
we've had the nurses down there looking at them," Timmerman said
Timmerman said he spoke with some sheriffs who are ditching body scanners in favor of dogs
Timmerman visited Shallow Creek Kennels and was blown away by what he saw
A German shorthaired pointer was strongly recommended for the jail
"They said they've got the strongest nose there is possible
and their demeanor's right for the jail," he noted
It's not a dog for the inmates to pet," added chief deputy Martin Emerine
Timmerman said a federal study found a canine program is more effective in identifying contraband than any scanner system on the market
Before fully committing to around-the-clock use of a canine for contraband searches
Timmerman recommended trying things out with one dog
"While the machine is still working … I wanted to implement this program and see how well the first dog does before we decide whether we're going to continue where we're going to try to have a dog on each shift," Timmerman said
Asked about adding another K-9 for law enforcement operations
Timmerman said it's a possibility down the road but his focus right now is on contraband detection
Coldwater's dog is getting ready to retire
I think (Deputy Spencer Heinl's K-9 Hex) will probably be the only dog in the county at that point," Timmerman said
like it's the sheriff's office job to have all the canine's in the county
It's just we can't take on all the cost of everything all the time."
County officials in October 2019 approved transferring K-9 Franko from the sheriff's office to the Coldwater Police Department so the dog could continue serving alongside his handler Kevin Wynk
who left the office for a new job with the police department
the Celina Police Department had announced that K-9 officer Peng retired at the end of December after nine years of duty
Celina Mayor Jeff Hazel said once the police department is brought back to a full-working staff
Police chief Tom Wale noted that will probably happen in 2026
The police department acquired Peng in early 2016 when the German shepherd was 20 months old
Tom and Betty Leininger and Craig and Kathryn Kennedy donated more than $11,000 for his purchase
the poker world became introduced to “Gambledore,” otherwise known as Estonian businessman and poker novice Vladimir Korzinin who took down a Triton Series event in Monte Carlo
but the man he beat heads-up went largely unnoticed
who’s primed to make his own name in the poker world after bagging a massive chip lead on Day 2 of the $100,000 Triton Main Event at the 2024 World Series of Poker Paradise
nearly 3,000,000 ahead of his closest challenger as 15 players remain to chase the bracelet and Triton Series trophy tomorrow
Ketola began his ascent to the top when he doubled up off Mikita Badziakouski with a pair of queens
He then flopped the nut flush to bust Michael Addamo in 26th place
but Ketola separated from the pack by taking down the biggest pot of the day
Wai Kin Yong fired all three streets and ended up all in in a 6,000,000-chip pot with top pair
Ketola snapped him off with a set of jacks as Yong was sent crashing to the rail in 18th place after starting the hand inside the top five on the leaderboard
Ketola only has four recorded cashes on his resume
all from the Triton Series in Monte Carlo in November
He earned a career-best $2,970,000 for finishing runner-up to Korzinin but can eclipse that tomorrow if he takes the title
In second place is German superstar and four-time Triton Series champion Fedor Holz
who picked off Jason Koon with queens after Koon four-bet shoved for 2,590,000 on the last level of the day to fall in 16th place
and Alexander Zubov (3,320,000) round out the top five
Samuel Mullur took down his first WSOP bracelet at last year’s WSOP Paradise by winning the $25,000 GGMillion$ Championship and bagged up 2,550,000 as he seeks to capture a bracelet for the second straight year at Atlantis Paradise Island Bahamas
Mullur busted Ben Tollerene and Paulius Vaitiekunas in a three-way all in
then eliminated Chris Brewer in 21st place
Other notables still in the hunt include Alex Foxen (2,975,000)
More than 30 new entries joined the 80 survivors from Day 1 at the start of the day to create a total field of 182
Only the top 31 players would make the money
and Patrik Antonius were among those to fall short of the bubble
All-time money winner Bryn Kenney ran queens into Ketola’s kings to fall a few spots short of the money
while Davies spiked a set of fives to beat Paul Phua’s flopped two pair to bring the field down to the bubble
Wayne Heung tried to make it through with just 5,000 but was eventually forced all in from the big blind with seven-deuce and lost to Dimitar Danchev’s turned pair of jacks to burst the bubble
and Timothy Adams (29th) quickly made their way to the payout desk
while Foxen rivered a pair of tens to beat Justin Bonomo’s ace-king and send Bonomo to the rail in 22nd
Foxen also picked up jacks to bust Vladimir Minko in 19th
while Mario Mosboeck counterfeited Daniel Dvoress’ pocket deuces on the river to send Dvoress out in 17th
The remaining 15 players return tomorrow at noon local time to play down to a champion
The action picks up on Level 21 with blinds of 50,000-100,000 and a 100,000 big blind ante
Everyone left has already locked up $269,000
with a spot at the nine-handed final table worth $393,000
The eventual champion walks away with $3,850,000
and the prestige that comes from conquering one of the toughest fields on the poker calendar

the UAF rifle team placed third at the NCAA Championships
the University of Alaska Fairbanks rifle team placed third at the NCAA Championships
1 in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll
led the competition entering Saturday after posting the top smallbore score Friday
UAF recorded just the seventh-best air rifle score Saturday
today was not our day,” UAF head coach Will Anti said in a statement
“We struggled to get into a rhythm in both relays
It’s a rare day that we can’t get things sorted during sighters or the early stages of the match
The team fought hard though and gave it a great effort
We didn’t leave anything in the tank this season.”
Graduate senior Cecelia Ossi and junior Rachael Charles finished as the individual NCAA champion and runner-up in the smallbore
Ossi became the first individual smallbore national champion for the Nanooks since 2014 (Tim Sherry)
She is the first individual national champion for UAF since Rylan Kissell won the individual air rifle title in 2023
the same year Ossi won the individual smallbore title while competing for the University of Nebraska
Senior Sara Karasova and freshman Lucie Kissenberger finished 16th and 20th
in smallbore while freshman Amanda Pettersen wasn’t among the Nanooks’ four scorers but placed 26th
Paired with her runner-up effort in the smallbore
that helped Charles to the top individual aggregate score at the NCAA Rifle Championships
earning her the NCAA Rifle Championships Most Outstanding Performer honor
Kissenberger (34th) and Ossi (35th) were further back in the 45-person air rifle standings
finishing third in smallbore and first in air rifle
and NCAA rifle championships host Kentucky finished runner-up ahead of UAF by finishing runner-up in smallbore and third in air rifle
UAF defeated Kentucky in Fairbanks last month but had not faced West Virginia this season prior to the NCAA Championships
this year marked a podium finish for a fourth-straight year and the Nanooks’ 23rd podium finish in 38 trips to the NCAA Championships
That ends a memorable season in which the Nanooks won their first Patriot Rifle Conference (PRC) title since 2022 and broke their program aggregate record multiple times
broke the air rifle record and Ossi broke the Nanooks’ individual aggregate score record

Meet Ossi Grace
the Nigerian-born singer-songwriter with a voice that’ll stop you in your tracks
Ossi’s debut single “Reason” is a beautiful mix of Afro-Soul and raw emotion
The track dives into the ups and downs of love and the brave decision to stay true to it
Ossi’s love affair with music started at just 11
thanks to her mom’s Girl Like Me album from Rihanna
she turned life’s challenges into fuel for her art
and her move to the UK gave her sound a simpler yet more profound edge
With her upcoming EP produced by Chopsticks (the mastermind behind Burna Boy’s “Last Last”)
18 competition at the Tanana Valley Sportsmen’s Association
Cecelia Ossi has already helped the Nanooks to a couple of program records and broken or tied a couple of UAF's individual records herself in her one and only season in Fairbanks
Compared to how quickly she found success in the sport of rifle after a late start
it took Nebraska transfer Cecelia Ossi a bit of time to find her groove at UAF
she was joining a team that had placed third at the NCAA Championships a season ago and won its 11th NCAA title in 2023
Now, however, she’s an integral part of a UAF squad that just won its first Patriot Rifle Conference (PRC) title since 2022 and is ranked No
While Ossi won the NCAA individual smallbore title the same year the Nanooks won their NCAA team title (she also won the USA Shooting women’s smallbore title that year)
UAF head coach Will Anti didn’t think acquiring an already-accomplished talent like Ossi was likely even when he found out she’d entered the transfer portal
“We weren’t even close to one of the first schools to reach out to her
because obviously when a name of that caliber goes in the portal
everybody’s sending a text message,” Anti said
and we had a feeling that she was probably looking at a couple other schools
So we were fortunate to make our sales pitch
and it vibed with her and she vibed with us.”
Ossi was in fact already in communication with West Virginia University
which is Anti’s alma mater and the school that her first connection to the sport competed for
another early rifle connection helped steer her to UAF even if she was skeptical about a move to Fairbanks at first
“I didn’t think I would like it as much as I do,” Ossi said
I didn’t think that I would fall in love with as I did.”
was a gymnast for much of her childhood before injuries caused her to retire
She had a friend whose sister shot for West Virginia
and she went to her hometown club to try her hand at rifle
which she enjoyed and thought could be an avenue to continue competing in college
Joining the sport toward the end of her junior year of high school
Ossi missed much of the recruiting period and received a lot of nos from schools that “eventually turned into yeses.” She credits her high school coaches for having faith in her early on
“The coaches there were really great,” Ossi said
do you think that I’ll be able to achieve that?’ And they were very supportive
the latter of whom transferred to UAF ahead of his graduate senior season of 2022-23 and is tied with Ossi for the Nanooks’ smallbore record
lived 15 minutes away from Ossi’s hometown and coached her for the rest of high school and worked with her through college
he gave the pitch for her to choose UAF and hear Anti out
Fast forward to the present and Ossi joined UAF as a Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) All-American three years in a row
including a First-Team CRCA Smallbore All-American
a Second-Team CRCA Air Rifle All-American and a Second-Team Aggregate All-American last season
She was a team captain at the University of Nebraska
where she broke the program record in the smallbore shooting discipline with a score of 597 and tied it in the air rifle with a score of 598
She was also named the 2023 Nebraska Best Female Athlete
She’s been just as critical to UAF’s success this season
the Nanooks both broke their program aggregate record and tied their air rifle record Jan
broke that aggregate record again by one point Feb
and Ossi broke UAF’s individual aggregate record and tied the individual smallbore record on the same day
so it was kind of a perfect day,” Ossi said
“I think it’s rewarding to see the work that we’re doing here pay off
I feel like the whole season I’ve been building more tools
more ability to shoot on a higher level than I have before
And the coaches have put in a lot of effort
and to see it all kind of come together is rewarding for both parties
UAF again broke the program aggregate record
and this time broke the air rifle record too
in winning the Patriot Rifle Conference title Sunday
Ossi was fourth overall in the individual aggregate standings and second among UAF shooters in that latest effort
On a team that’s 13-1 in head-to-head matchups and just beat six other conference foes (including TCU
the only team to beat the ‘Nooks this season)
Ossi has the most individual aggregate score wins of any UAF shooter this season (five)
she has already matched or improved upon her personal best scores in both disciplines
matching her mark of 597 in smallbore and recording a new air rifle personal best of 599
1 tied the UAF individual smallbore record and gave Ossi the individual aggregate record
she won’t be able to break the air rifle record
since Olympian Rylan Kissell shot a perfect 600 as a Nanook in 2023 and current UAF sophomore Elli Spencer did the same last year
you’d be surprised to learn that Ossi didn’t even make UAF’s counting team (coaches designate five shooters per discipline to “count” and the top four scores from the “counters” are tabulated into the team score at each meet) on a couple of occasions this season
Ossi has the most collegiate experience of any UAF shooter
but she doesn’t feel like the most experienced shooter on the team given she’s new to Fairbanks and such weighty team expectations and got a late start to the sport
she wanted to find a place where she could improve her technical knowledge of the sport and have competitive teammates to push her
“But I saw a lot of people on this team as being more experienced than myself
and so I was expecting to learn and gain from being around them instead of the other way around.”
Ossi was intimidated by joining such a historically successful program
but so too were UAF’s coaches (Anti and assistant Randi Loudin) intimidated to be tasked with trying to provide further development to such an accomplished individual
“When we get recruits in that are really high level
the coaching staff is also intimidated to some degree because you want to be part of their success story
and they’ve already succeeded at some level,” Anti said
After a somewhat slow start to the season by her standards
and the highs that her coaches and teammates saw in practice began translating to matches
including that record-setting senior day Feb
“Cece right off the bat was very easy to work with,” Anti said
not because everything that we say is correct
It’s more like somebody’s willing to try all the avenues
and then they’re going to figure out what works for them.”
With two weeks between their last competition and their next
Both Ossi and her new team knew what the other was capable of and have been reminded of that through records in recent weeks
They’ll hope to remind each other again at the NCAA Rifle Championships in Lexington
“We watched her win the national championship,” Anti said
“Which is huge in the sport to win an individual national title
because you have to stand up there by yourself and win a final in front of everybody.”
Ossi didn’t think she would still be competing collegiately
It wasn’t until the 2024 NCAA Championships that she thought about using a fifth year of eligibility (which is granted because of the Covid-affected 2020-21 academic year)
it would be really cool to join one of these other teams.’ And of course
so I was watching them the whole time too.”
UAF will look to build upon its PRC title and potentially win a national title over the program that Anti attended and that Ossi was heavily considering: CRCA No
Ossi had the opportunity to face her former team for the first time at the PRC Championships over the weekend and expressed her gratitude for the school where she spent four years
rewrote the record books and emerged as a top shooter
Ossi isn’t eligible to be named a CRCA All-American again
but she can be counted toward UAF’s team score
It’s likely no accident that new reality coincides with her first year at a true NCAA title-contending program
“That was my first time ever really being on a team that was winning something semi-big,” Ossi said of the PRC title
“....So the mentality switching from that to being on a team where I’m part of something bigger
where we’re actually achieving something as a team
is very exciting to be part of something bigger than just myself.”
As for what’s next after next month’s NCAA Championships
She’s working toward her Masters of Business Administration and is hoping to continue shooting competitively after graduation
Remaining and training in Fairbanks is a possibility
and may aim for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles
Long time friends and local players Ryan Young of the Hutchison Hawks and Katie Bast of the Monroe Catholic Rams won the free throw contest in the boys and girls division at the Aurora Regional Tournament in Valdez.

De Nora - an Italian multinational company specializing in electrochemistry and a leader in sustainable technologies and the emerging green hydrogen industry – is partnering with Maffei Sarda Silicati to build a green hydrogen production plant located in the Sardinian municipality of Ossi (Sassari)
financed through PNRR funds and promoted by the local company Maffei Sarda Silicati - operating in the field of extraction
and marketing of raw materials mainly intended for the ceramic and hollow glass markets- is coordinated by Make Energy as technical advisor and sees De Nora involved for the supply of its Dragonfly small electrolyzer
located on a decommissioned industrial area in the municipality of Ossi
will be redeveloped by Maffei Sarda SilicatI itself and will generate about 50 tons of hydrogen per year
which the Sardinian company will use to power its industrial plant
partly replacing the fossil fuel currently used
the green hydrogen plant will be powered by a new 1.5 MW photovoltaic plant located in the same area
thus ensuring a 100% sustainable industrial process
which is in charge of issuing the compulsory authorizations for the construction of the plant
was immediately welcomed by the Mayor of Ossi - Pasquale Libinu
In addition to meeting Maffei Sarda Silicati's energy needs
the green hydrogen thus generated may have various applications
positively contributing to the decarbonization of the Sardinia Region
“We are proud to have been selected as a partner in this project that will significantly boost Sardinia's green transition
Through its sustainable and innovative solutions
De Nora is once again a facilitator of green production processes
positively impacting territories and communities
particularly suitable for local industrial needs
as a modular plug-and-play solution.”
“Maffei Sarda Silicati SpA is pleased to announce the agreement reached with the company De Nora; agreement implemented for the construction and installation of a 1 MW electrolyzer by June 2026 that will be used for the production of green hydrogen
The hydrogen will be fed into the drying process of the sands mined by the company
with a significant reduction in CO2 emissions
This is yet another step that Maffei Sarda Silicati SpA is taking to achieve zero emissions within all its activities and increasingly in line with its policy of respect for the environment.”
mayor of Ossi: “The topic of renewable energy sources has become increasingly relevant; the innovative project presented by Maffei and the PNRR funding achieved is also a good result because they are located on a site that was exploited from a mining point of view
then restored and now again affected by this intervention
is not in coal or other fossil sources but in the use of clean energies
which must be realized not only because they are incentivized but because they are necessary for the environment."

PERHAPS YOU’VE NOTICED it in some of this year’s fresh crop of seed catalogs: A new little designation alongside certain of the varieties labels them as
“open source,” or lists the acronym or logo of OSSI
Maybe the variety description says something about a pledge
and makes a comparison to open-source software–the non-proprietary kind that doesn’t require a license to use
Welcome to the world of “freed seed,” a concept inspired by the open-source software movement
but aimed at insuring that the genes in at least some seed varieties can never be patented and otherwise restricted
I wrote a story about the Open Source Seed Initiative for “Mother Earth News” late in 2015
there have been such positive developments in the effort that I wanted an update myself
and to share news of this new “brand”—or should I say
in time for your own catalog-shopping adventures
I know we could spend our whole time together lamenting the state of “ownership” in the seed world
ownership of all the genetics by so few large companies
But let’s just take a moment to set the scene against which OSSI was founded
with Monsanto and Syngenta and Limagrain and Dow
That’s where your listeners probably know what’s going on with patenting
That hasn’t penetrated too much to vegetable seeds yet
but understanding where we have been is going to be essential to know where we are going
We are beginning to see those things emerging in garden seeds
For the past 30 years I have been working on this
and what we’ve got is essentially a set of gene giants—the Monsantos
and they’ve used intellectual-property rights—patents in particular—to strengthen their position
If you are now a farmer growing corn or soybeans in this country
farmers in corn and soy and canola must sign a technology use agreement
We’re beginning to see that bleed into vegetable production
one of the largest vegetable-seed companies
Its practice of patenting seed is now being followed by such companies as Sakata and Rijk Zwaan
Even if you look closely in the Burpee catalog
you may find a warning that there is some patented seed
your readers may note you will look and see under lettuces in particular that Johnny’s is telling you
that a variety has been patented—but they don’t always know
but you point out that breeding is particularly constrained
small-company breeders or big-company breeders
or whether they are in our universities—they can’t get access to that patented seed for research purposes
Which means that we are deeply constrained in how we are going to respond to climate change
The production of new varieties depends critically on access to material for breeding—to the diversity that’s embedded in all that material that’s out there
How we are a going to respond as a society
as an agricultural community to challenges to where disease pressures are going to emerge
where rain comes in—how we’re going tor respond to environmental and disease and insect pressures that will be profoundly changing
depends on capacity to access genetic diversity
And that’s constrained if the companies have got it locked up
I’ve even read stories that people are trying to patent things like traits for very dark red lettuce leaves
that are red throughout—things that seem to me like nature expressing itself
A. That’s particularly appalling, and it’s one of the reasons why my colleague Irwin Goldman [above] here at the University of Wisconsin
who is an onion and beet and carrot breeder
how he got into this—why he was stimulated to do something about it and joined OSSI
He found that red carrots had been patented
How can they be patenting what is a product of nature
And here’s where political economy comes into it
The United States P.T.O.—the Patent and Trademark Office—is overwhelmed
That’s not the only natural trait being patented or applied for a patent
The companies when they’re this big will patent anything they want to
and it takes someone who’s paying attention to challenge
is that really problematic claims are being made
or even conventional breeding techniques are being patented
Any one patent has anywhere from 10 to 64 claims in it
and you’ve got to be a lawyer and a geneticist and a farmer and an agronomist to know what’s even being claimed
Q. How does it work? On your website it talks about “freed seed,” not free as in given away for free
OSSI is sort of a creative commons for seed germplasm–seed genetics—but it’s also protected
We took our inspiration from these sort of open-source tendencies that you see all over the place right now
as people try to figure out how it is that we can build a sharing economy
in opposition to the kind of consolidation and locking up and closure of the commons that’s taking place all over
We looked at how are we going to do this with seeds
And what we do is use a tool we call our pledge
“You have the freedom to use these OSSI-pledged seeds in any way you choose
you pledge not to restrict others’ use of these seeds or their derivatives by patents or other means
and to include this pledge with any transfer of these seeds or their derivatives.”
What that means is that anybody who pledges their variety as an OSSI variety agrees to allow anybody who gets this variety to save
breed with—and to transmit that pledge along with those seeds or any derivatives
because that means that anything you do with these seeds
and we theoretically have an enlarging set of “freed”—with a “d” on the end of it—seed
that begins to compete and provide an alternative to farmers
anyone who wants to maintain freedom of access to some material
So first breeders would pledge their varieties to OSSI—to say
“We’re putting this into the commons,” so to speak
And then people who wanted to take it out and use it
to buy a quantity of it and use it maybe in their own breeding
they’d put the next generations back into there
logos of current sellers of OSSI-pledged varieties of seed.]
can save their seed—which you said cannot happen in the example with the big corporate seed
and in fact Monsanto has commented on us in print now
but a protected commons—which is to say it’s not just public domain that anybody including Monsanto can access
because if you access an OSSI-pledged seed you have to agree to the OSSI pledge
In an article that some of their corn breeders published in the most recent publication of “Plant Breeding Reviews,” they’ve called OSSI’s seeds
When it was just some open-source seed breeders [without the pledge]—and there are a number of great ones—Monsanto et al
would take things out (and I am oversimplifying)
so to speak [laughter] and use those traits in their own work and then patent those works derived from what had been open source…but it hadn’t been in a protected commons
We’re trying to build that protected commons as an ethical community of breeders
seed companies and farmers and gardeners and consumers
who hopefully will buy produce produced from freed seed
We’re not a seed company; we’re an educational 501(c)3
What happens is that a breeder who agrees and says
I don’t want to patent it; I want it to be used and shared and transformed
Or as Frank Morton [above] has done: all his varieties
That means the material is only released and available under the pledge
We work then with OSSI seed-company partners who agree to sell the pledged seed with a formal agreement with OSSI
and publish the pledge in their catalog and online
and identify the breeder—so that the breeder gets some credit
They also agree then for any bulk sales of those seed
that are likely to be re-sold or bred with
We now have 24 breeders, and 24 seed companies, and this growing season—this catalog season—over 250 varieties and growing
I just got an email today that we’ve got more
Not only seed companies but breeders are saying
What OSSI is trying to do essentially—it’s not just all altruism
We’re trying to create a market for ethically produced seed
Many of your listeners may want to buy organic seed
They may want to buy seed that’s got the Safe Seed Pledge
We’re adding on another layer of what you might call socially aware political economy of ethically produced seed and branding it—giving gardeners and farmers an opportunity to buy it
and seed companies an opportunity to sell it
We hope that there is a market for ethically produced seed
It’s interesting: The numbers have really jumped
When I wrote the “Mother Earth News” story not so many months ago
there were 12 companies signed on to sell OSSI seed and about 60 varieties of seed that has been pledged
You’ve doubled the number who are selling and quadrupled the varieties in no time
And we want to be sure we can do this well and correctly this growing season
and serve the seed-company partners that we have
We believe there is a market out there for ethically produced seed
Q. Let’s talk about some examples of seed that has been pledged. You mentioned Frank Morton, who is Wild Garden Seed—a great breeder of lettuce and greens and calendula [below] and more
Now that’s one of the great contemporary breeders—that’s fantastic for OSSI
and not just any old seed that someone wants to drop off at your doorstep
We hope that people will be interested in buying some OSSI seed for social and political reasons
because you’re part of the freed-seed movement
It’s also social; you want to support breeders like Frank
freelancers who are not part of a university or part of a big seed company
We need that diversity in the scientific breeding community to maintain the broad range of varieties that we are going to need to respond to climate change and keep good varieties out there
Varieties that we offer need to have agronomic and culinary advantages as well
Let me run over some of our breeders [get the whole list] and what they’ve got to offer
It was selected to go up on the International Space Station to experiment with it there and was grown there and eaten by astronauts
It’s so red that people don’t even necessarily identify it as a lettuce at trials
He’s also got ‘Stocky Red Roaster’ pepper, and ‘Red Ursa’ kale. He grows for flavor
Jonathan Spero is another of our farmers in Oregon, at Lupine Knoll Farm, a seed grower: ‘Top Hat’ sweet corn (available at Restoration Seeds, Bountiful Gardens, Fedco). And ‘Solstice’ broccoli, which is my favorite and the one I grow—not only because it tastes good
but because you can make a broccoli that is 2 feet across
but what I want is then the side shoots coming all the rest of the season
Jonathan’s ‘Solstice’ broccoli does that for me
Carol Deppe of Fertile Valley Seed—the intellectual among the freelance breeders
is also a writer [and an OSSI board member]
For those who are interested in parching corn—not just growing it and eating it the way it comes out
her ‘Parching Red Manna’ corn is maybe the way to go
she’s breeding for something besides eating sweet corn or feeding it to animals
It’s so important that I should mention my colleague Irwin Goldman at University of Wisconsin
who’s got populations out there now—these are not varieties
OSSI-freed seed that can be used to breed other varieties
with landraces of seed from up in the mountains—the stuff that’s needed to build on and have available as we respond to climate change
barley in the OSSI list—breeders pledging genetics of those—and also the list from the Dwarf Tomato Project pledged as well
A. From Australia—so we’re international. Bill Whitson from Cultivariables with South American indigenous crops like oca and ulluco and yacon–a yacon that I’d never even heard of that you can try out, that is not photoperiod dependent and can be grown by us right here
We’ve got connections to the Guild of Oca Breeders in the United Kingdom as well—so we’re after diversity
and eaters that’s committed to an alternative path
to a truly sustainable agriculture that is just and sustainable for all of us

I pledge to buy only OSSI seeds whenever possible
I am also going to share this post with my friends
I’m forwarding this to some of my other master gardener buddies who only grow organic
but this is big plus and opens up a whole new group to explore and buy from
I’m a home gardener in Central California literally surrounded by fields of patented produce
I am very excited about this and will use these seeds
Thanks to everyone for all the hard work you’ve put into this important movement!
And I love the “freed seed” line
where all the fields of fodder are engineered crops
and I also pledge to buy as much of my seed (for my small garden) as possible as OSSI seed
Kloppenburg says “yacon…that is not photoperiod dependent”
Many plants of tropical origin depend on the length of the day (photoperiod) for certain functions
Many of the Andean roots and tubers like oca
and mashua require day lengths of 12 hours or less before they form tubers; they are photoperiod dependent
The importance of this in North America is that short days begin in late September and these plants are not frost resistant
so they can’t easily be grown in areas where frosts arrive before mid-November
which makes it easier to grow in climates that have early frost
I’m so happy to read this interview with Jack Kloppenburg
who’s stimulated many advances in sustainable agriculture in Wisconsin
My family farm in Indiana is firmly held by Monsanto and Syngenta
and the system creates an entanglement that’s difficult to break
and I’ll pass this excellent interview on to others as well
Don’t let edible and decorative but non-edible varieties interbreed if you keep the seeds and eat the resulting produce…
Last summer a German pensioner died from eating homegrown courgettes
These vegetables belong to a group that used to have high content of Cucurbitacin
Present varieties have been bred to a low level of the deadly poison
But seeds from privately grown vegetables can re-breed to dangerous levels of the poison
A particular danger is the presence of decorative versions of some of the vegetables: These can have high poison levels and their seeds of local freedom can restore poison to the greens grown for eating
Much of my seed is from Fedco so I’m off to a good start
Try to also buy from NE seed companies as they’re seed seems more likely to be good producers for me
Makes seed buying easy….except for the decision making
A WAY TO GARDEN is the latest horticultural incarnation of me
birthed in March 2008 with my own words as its primary DNA
mingled with ideas shared in weekly expert interviews
I have been the garden columnist for “The New York Times,” where I began my journalism career decades ago
I host a public-radio podcast; I also teach online
plus hold tours at my 2.3-acre Hudson Valley (NY) Zone 6A garden
and always say no to chemicals and yes to great plants

Murray State's Cinema International continues its Spring 2024 season with two screenings of the German comedy Isi & Ossi
The film follows a billionaire's daughter and a poor would-be prize boxer who date with ulterior motives and not out of love
Daniel Hurt speaks with Cinema International director Dr
the film is a twist on the classic Shakespearean Romeo and Juliet story that highlights social divides and migration issues in Germany
Riegler says there are serious social commentaries
It also concerns relationships between the two titular characters and their parents

"Heidelberg houses the oldest university in Germany
which is an urban industrial town with low-income housing
and the two main characters fall into those two extremes."

“But then we get to know her from at a deeper level
and you see people who want to be happy and have fulfilled lives.”
and Rieger says it's essential to utilize the subtitles — even for those who feel comfortable with the German language
you would miss major themes and plot points," she explains
It's not only a class thing; it's a generational thing
But I also have to say that some subtitles have been badly translated
Paul says that while the comedy may be over the top
there is a lot in the film that might resonate with younger audiences
including socioeconomic and familial relationships

September 19, 2019Word of the Week
generalized nicknames arose to distinguish people who lived on either side of the border
Those in the west were informally referred to as Wessis (“from the West”) and those in the east were called Ossis (in German
Depending on the context in which they were used
these nicknames were occasionally perceived to be offensive
they were used simply to distinguish between the Easterners and the Westerners
their use was based on common stereotypes assigned to Germans from either side of the wall
“Did you see what that Wessi is wearing?!” one might
have heard on the street during a divided Germany – or shortly after its reunification
Wessis were often stereotyped as capitalistic
while Ossis were often stereotyped as paranoid
stereotypes continued to live on for many years – and to some extent still exist today
Ossi Wessi jokes were common in the late 1980s and early 1990s
and can occasionally still be heard among those who grew up in Cold War Germany
But regardless of the negative characteristics often assigned to Ossis and Wessis
the nicknames became deeply integrated into German culture before
nicknames such as Besserwessi (“better-knowing-Wessi” or
“know-it-all”) and Jammer-Ossi (“whining easterner”) also sprung up from these terms
The distinguishing nicknames demonstrate how deeply Germany was divided not just geographically
and how Germans perceived each other at the time
The year 2019 marks the 30th anniversary since the fall of the Berlin Wall
which means Germany has been one nation for three decades
While there are still some who label themselves – or others – as Ossis and Wessis
it is an increasingly rarer distinction as Germans gather in celebration of the achievements they have made as one nation
But as you read about the fall of the wall and Germany’s reunification
it’s likely you’ll come across the words Ossi and Wessi
Just make sure not to label anyone with them

during the NCAA rifle championships at the University of Akron's Rhodes Arena in Ohio
has clinched the NCAA smallbore individual championship
her title came after an exciting final match that drew much interest from the sizable crowd inside Rhodes Arena
with Ossi and Kentucky's Will Shaner jockeying for the top position on the leaderboard to close out this year's NCAA smallbore championship
Competing in the first smallbore rifle relay on Friday
Ossi finished in third place with a score of 590-43X
Her best string in smallbore qualification came in one of two fired kneeling position ones with a score of 100
Ossi also posted three 99 scores—two in prone position and one in standing
it came down to Ossi and Kentucky rifle team shooter Will Shaner after the other six competitors had been eliminated
Going in to the head-to-head contest portion of the final to determine the champion
Shaner was in first place with a two-point advantage over Ossi
By round two of the head-to-head smallbore rifle showdown between Shaner and Ossi
Ossi had overcome the gap and deposited even more
After round 12 and with an eight-point margin (16-8), Ossi had clinched the NCAA smallbore rifle title over Shaner, who was last year's NCAA smallbore rifle champion
giving her two points which was enough to seal the deal for her
Cecelia Ossi is the first Nebraska shooter to land a NCAA rifle individual championship since 2015
when Rachel Martin (now the Ole Miss rifle team assistant coach) won the smallbore title
At the Nebraska rifle team website (huskers.com)
Ossi said in an interview: “All my coaches have put in so much work
It just means a lot to me to win that medal
but for them and all the work they’ve put into helping me succeed.”

The legendary Ossi Runne has died at the age of 93
His family announced that the veteran musician
producer and Eurovision conductor passed away on November 5th
Ossi Runne was born Yrjö Osvald Rundberg in Viilpuri
He was only nine years old when he changed his name to Ossi Runne
He started his career as a very skilled trumpeter
when Finland was in the grasp of the Nazi invasion
Ossi wanted to cheer his fellow country men and women up
both as a leading musician as well as an ordinary member
He first got the position as a conductor for the Chinese Variety Orchestra in Stockholm in the early 50s
but resigned from that post at the age of 20 and moved back to Finland
There he became a studio manager for the Muzikki-Fazer company in Helsinki
where he spent the next 8 years of his career
Ossi was subsequently recruited by Yleisradio to become the head conductor of the National Radio Orchestra
Ossi conducted his first Eurovision entry for Finland
It was performed by Ann-Christine Nyström and came tenth out of 18 songs that night
Ossi Runne became a prominent fixture in Finland’s Eurovision history
His last one was the 1989 entry “La Dolce Vita”
This gave Finland one of its best results to date by securing a solid top ten placing and coming seventh out of 22 entries
Despite subsequently retiring from his conductor duties regarding the contest
Ossi wasn’t quite done with Eurovision just yet
He was Yleisradio’s commentator the following year
having previously done the job back in 1981
Ossi continued to lead the National Radio Orchestra until retiring fully in 1992
Ossi Runne had a stellar career from 1944-2003
with his last job being the band director for the Karelia Wind Band
Ossi also published his auto-biography in 2003
especially regarding his time at Eurovision
A legend has gone and we send our love to his family
Do you have fond memories of Ossie Runne and the songs he conducted at Eurovision
She first got into the contest in 1989—on VHS
Iceland got nul points that year but she didn't care
because Austria's Thomas Forstner and the contest grabbed hold of her heart and neither of them have let go of it since
She is a fanatic maker of all kinds of lists
Rest in peace for one of the longest-lasting faces in Eurovision history
Truly a big name in finnish Eurovision history
He and Noel Kelehan put in the most hours behind the podium
and while they each had their own unique styles (Noel very reserved
only using small movements; Ossi broader and more focused on getting to the emotion of the song)
It’s fun to look back on songs he conducted and seeing him enthusiastically leading the orchestra
equally committed no matter what he thought of the song
Together with Noel Kelehan and Richard Oesterreicher probably the most well known conductor for the people who watched eurovision in the eighties and nineties
and one of either Curt-Eric Holmquist or Anders Berglund (depending on the year)

Combining his love of nature with his skills in photography, 21-year-old Ossi Saarinen captures the many wild forest animals living in Finland’s mystical woodlands
From curious foxes and mischievous red squirrels to shy deers and even grizzly bears
the talented wildlife photographer gets up-close and personal with these charming creatures
revealing their most intimate and adorable moments
Finland is almost entirely covered in untouched forests
making it the perfect home for a wide range of species
Saarinen spends hundreds of hours amongst the picturesque landscape
patiently waiting for the timid animals to emerge
His resulting images look like something from a real-life fairytale—fox cubs are captured playing
We recently caught up with Saarinen to find out what it’s like to spend time photographing these amazing animals
When did you first become interested in photography
I took my first photo with a DSLR in the beginning of 2015 and fell love immediately
My first photo was of a bird in my backyard
I started with all kind of photographing but ended up shooting nature and mostly wild animals
I’ve been super interested in nature and especially animals since I was a kid
I realized that with a camera I can save and share those amazing moments and feelings I experience in the nature
Wildlife photography is very challenging which makes it even more interesting
Sometimes it means hours and hours of waiting with no result but when I finally get the shot I wanted it’s all worth it
You’re able to get so close to the forest animals
I start carefully from a far distance and then slowly
I learned to know how the animal behaves and reacts to my presence
Over time they start trusting me more and let me closer
Do you have a favorite creature that you like to photograph
I find the life and behavior of these smart animals very interesting
seeing how they grow up and leave the nest
I feel very lucky and privileged to be able to do that
The fox cubs are also very adorable and cute and adult foxes are beautiful in their thick orange fur
Do you have any funny stories of a particular animal encounter
I can’t remember any exceptionally funny moments with animals
But the moments I often go back in my mind and laugh at them are the days when everything goes wrong
One early morning I went close to a fox nesting site and waited for the shy foxes to appear for almost 6 hours
I couldn’t move at all because I didn’t want to make any sounds to scare the foxes
The air was full of mosquitoes and they were biting me all around and I couldn’t do anything about it
After hours without seeing a single fox I finally gave up and went home
My right hand was so full of mosquito bites that I couldn’t have even taken any photos with my finger as its size had almost doubled from a bite
What advice would you give someone who’s interested in taking up wildlife photography
you’ll be surprised how many animals there actually are
You don’t need an expensive camera and huge lenses
Start with a phone and when you feel like it’s not enough anymore get a real camera
Spend a lot of time in nature and with the animals
The more you know about your photo subject the closer you can get and the more interesting your photos can be
Take as many different kinds of photos as possible
Then you can choose the best ones and next time you will know what worked and what didn’t

Getting a job at Solita
a fast-growing Finnish digital transformation company
is harder than getting into Oxford University
Its team of some 1,200 experts beat large numbers of applicants to be there
The percentage of employees with master’s degrees in the company
is among the highest in the Nordic countries
“It’s not written anywhere that we only recruit people with master’s degrees – that’s not the case at all,” says Solita’s President and CEO Ossi Lindroos
even though we don’t necessarily have the street cred of being this super cool company
there is something in our culture and value base that really attracts people.”
Solita tackles a wide range of challenges for different clients around the world with an emphasis on allowing its staff to be creative and suggest bold solutions
but more about setting our teams free to really be able to deliver value for our end customers,” he shares
the company works with engineering company KONE
automatic doors and movable walkways; more than a billion people a day use its products
Solita helps KONE build systems for predictive maintenance analytics
enabling it to pre-empt breakdowns and faults
ultimately adding value for customers and users
The project is highly complex and requires staff to flex their expertise in numerous ways
“We have that kind of urge and curiosity in place that makes us want to grow,” Ossi explains
“I always say that we are big enough to dare but small enough to care
We really have the guts and the skills to play with the big guys – and the experience to back it up.”
I always say that we are big enough to dare but small enough to care
We really have the guts and the skills to play with the big guys
Solita fully embraces the healthy work-life balance that Scandinavia is famous for
“We believe that there is a lot of attractiveness in our story of this kind of Nordic work culture
The work–life balance and these kinds of things genuinely attract a lot of talent out there,” he says
Attracting top-level talent is fundamental to the company’s success
it has grown its turnover from €10 million to €130 million
then that’s a disappointment,” Ossi shares
Solita went international by moving into new areas throughout Scandinavia
Ossi is not interested in growth for its own sake
the phenomenal success the company has enjoyed so far is a natural consequence of the team’s intense curiosity and desire to explore new horizons
That’s why much of its growth has been organic
and Solita only considers an acquisition if it is certain that the target company can be fully integrated into its winning culture
“We grow by doing the right things with the right people – the right customers,” Ossi says
“To grow organically within the countries in which we operate is still key in the future as well
That’s naturally important for us because we are a culture- and value-based organisation
it’s a challenging task to get the culture and value base to stay in good shape
So we really believe in growing organically.”
Solita is actively seeking companies with a good value base in the Central European region
with almost 300 employees working beyond Finnish borders
and the company is seeing some of its strongest growth in Belgium and Sweden
As the business expands internationally and embraces a work-from-home culture amid the pandemic
Ossi is availing himself of the opportunity to hire the best talent with more geographical freedom
“One thing that the pandemic has helped us with a bit is that we can genuinely start to build teams internationally,” he says
“Where our people sit when they deliver our services doesn’t matter very much to our customers.” This could allow Solita to build a single team made up of people from Belgium
someone from Finland and someone from Sweden
As many executives and managers have come to understand since 2020
a key challenge with remote work is being able to maintain a sense of human connection
“How can we keep that community feeling even though we are still sitting at home and not having the kind of working life together that we used to?” Ossi asks
“We need to figure out how to maintain the culture and value base we are so proud of when people are not meeting each other face to face.” With this highly flexible international team in place
Ossi is now focusing on the best ways to bring value throughout Solita’s network of expertise
“I think the biggest thing is to make it even easier for our people to work on international assignments
allowing them to get better at supporting customers in delivering value from distributed teams,” he says
Ossi is met with the challenge of ensuring that every segment of the organisation is capitalising on the forward-leaning technologies and processes it implements for clients
“We want those kinds of innovations to be brought to the customer in a really effective way,” he insists
It’s data-driven transformation – that’s why we grow as fast as we grow
As Solita forms new partnerships and attracts new business
it faces the task of convincing some partners of the importance of deep systemic transformation when it comes to their digital processes
“I think that despite the whole next generation of IT or digital transformation houses out there
there is still a group of customers who haven’t understood how fundamental the transformations are that digital processes really bring to companies,” Ossi says
We still encounter companies that think that they can just buy a tool
a channel or some digital software to solve their challenges.” Many customers have begun to understand the benefits of a more holistic approach and agile ways of working
although others still need to be guided on that journey
“What it really means to be truly data driven in your business
or what it really means when you try to get genuine value out of digital solutions
that’s what we want people to understand,” he says
Plenty of companies offer digital transformation services
it is the richness of Solita’s knowledge about data
which it owes to its highly talented and qualified employees
that has helped the Finnish company stand out
“If you think of digital transformation companies out there
you can find one in every single city,” he says
“What differentiates us is the scale and depth of our data expertise
The foundation is that we build award-winning solutions for our customers that are digital
But then our data expertise is coupled together with our transformation skills
so it’s data-driven transformation – that’s why we grow as fast as we grow
Another crucial differentiator for Solita is its commitment to building impact that lasts
there has always been a kind of craftsmanship and a strong sense of pride in what we do – we really want to do a great job for our clients,” Ossi stresses
“But it’s never with gimmicks or fancy stuff; it’s built in a way that customers can live a long time with the solutions that we provide for them
That naturally leads to long-lasting customer relationships
and the long-lasting customers grow the fastest.”
Ossi believes these long-terms relationships are the company’s most prized achievements
“Everything starts with how we build relationships with our customers,” he says
so you can truly build meaningful solutions for your customers
That means you need to have those exceptionally talented people who are serving the customers
Solita’s customer leads acutely understand their customers’ circumstances
what kind of people they are and what challenges they face
This knowledge allows the company to go well beyond expectations in its cooperation with customers
“It’s much deeper customer cooperation and communication than what might be considered the normal standard,” he shares
“We want to be on the same side of the table with our customers
and that means the individuals within the customer companies.”
Ossi explains that Solita rarely wins a big contract with a new customer right off the bat
Its relationships start with small projects
which allow the team to showcase their expertise and demonstrate how they can add value
“We always start with small assignments with our clients and then
they start to see that there’s more expertise in place that could help in wider and wider
When a genuine connection has been established on a human level
Solita naturally wins bigger contracts and requests from customers
and finally we have the processes in place to bring that repetition and continuity into the equation,” Ossi concludes
“All these steps are needed in order to really gain trust

WRI, along with the European Bureau for Conscientious Objection and the International Fellowship of Reconcilitation, submitted a letter to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe regarding the case of Osman Murat Ülke
Find the letter here
---------------------------------------------------
there was an "administrative decision" which said there was no arrest warrant for Ossi
Depending on the political climate of course
this administrative order could be changed
Here is the statement he gave at the police station:
Statement by Osman Murat Ülke to the police (Izmir
I would infer that my being summoned is to testify in the investigation Nr
2017/2776 by the Prosecutors’ Office of Bilecik
I presume the file is based on charges of “desertion” from 1999
A look in this file and the trials which preceded it should make it clear for any third party that the matter at hand cannot be described as a series of unrelated desertions or insubordination
Nine files of subordination; two files of desertion and two files of alienating the public from military service
all of these cases stem from one single decision of my conscientious objection to military service
all the investigations and trials have to be seen as parts of one and the same process
The real starting point of this process can be traced back to 1990
when I first discovered conscientious objection and then in 1992
the date of the first investigation targeted at me for alienating the public from the military on account of an article published by me
I was summoned today due to a process which lasted 25 to 27 years so far
I don’t deem it necessary to elaborate once more right now on my reasons to become a conscientious objector
The aforementioned files are filled with my statements over the years
Instead I’d like to point out how the current situation demonstrates that the government has failed to respect the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruling in the Ulke v Turkey case
that this investigation is even active and that I’m summoned to make a statement not only contradicts all assurances by the government to enact individual and general measures to settle or at least alleviate the situation
it’s an open violation of the very same ruling
The documents I brought with me clearly show how the government repeatedly assured the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe that it is about to implement individual and general measures
In one of these the Minister of Foreign Affairs rightfully underlines in reference to my case that according to Art
90 of the Constitution the rulings by ECHR supersede national law
Yet we witness that despite the passing of eleven years none of the general or individual measures have been implemented and the government does not only stall the process by keeping this investigation alive
I applied to the Constitutional Court regarding the unresolved ECHR verdict
I only received news that my application has been processed and a file has been opened
At this point my demand from the Prosecutors’ Office in Bilecik is that the investigation is dropped
it has to end this unsustainable situation
the Executive not only delayed the implementation of the general and individual measures
but never really intended to fulfill them at all
My only intention with this statement is to shed some light on the current state of affairs
My lawyer will file our legal demands in proper detail and address the Prosecutors’ Office of Bilecik and other relevant institutions

A handful of companies own the patents on virtually every seed planted in the US
a new crop of unowned seeds is bringing biodiversity back to farming
a Harvard-trained geneticist and board chair of the Open Source Seed Initiative (OSSI)
Most people have heard of open source software, maybe also of open source beer (Free beer for all!) or open source pharmaceutical research
The principle is the same: Someone developed the seeds — for cowpeas
rye and more — and now offers the resource for everybody to share
Just like software development has been co-opted by a few global companies like Microsoft and Apple
the international seed development and trade
is controlled by a few big giants like Bayer (Monsanto)
A 2012 Oxfam study found that four companies dominate more than 60 percent of the global trade with grains
few pay attention to the fact that most grains are protected or even patented
Most farmers don’t own the seeds they sow on their fields
professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and co-founder of OSSI says with disgust
“A few global companies have the monopolies on global seed trade
and they breed cash crops like corn and soy
world hunger or about the small farmer.” What sounds like a business problem impacts everybody
“These few gene giants on top of the food chain decide what ends up on our plates.”
Kloppenburg and half a dozen like-minded agriculture experts founded OSSI as an alternative to the monopolies
OSSI’s aim is the “free flow and exchange of genetic resources
of plant breeding and variety development,” Kloppenburg says
“we need novel plant varieties that are capable of responding to the changes
but we really need to talk about seed to table.”
The movement faces an uphill battle, particularly in the US where most farmers plant seeds that are patented by the big corporations
about 50 seed breeders have already signed on with OSSI in the US to offer nearly 500 seed varieties
And other open source seed organizations are making their own way in Europe
OSSI’s principles were the principles of farming for centuries
Farmers and seed breeders worked together to produce seeds that flourished under local conditions
The farmers saved a percentage of the seeds and sowed them again the next spring
this is not a lucrative model for profit-oriented multinational companies
since the seed breeders only earn a profit during the first sale and not again every year
and the work of plant breeders has to be protected
Otherwise they might fare like plant breeder Jim Baggett in Oregon
who in 1966 started breeding broccoli with an extra-long stem so it could be harvested more easily
He shared his novel broccoli with researchers and other breeders — until Monsanto-offspring Seminis patented a broccoli with exactly that trait in 2011
Baggett could trace more than a third of the plant material to his work
University of Wisconsin professor Irwin Goldman developed a particularly red carrot only to learn in 2013 that Seminis had applied for a patent for a particularly red carrot
only to realize that a Dutch seed company then got the patent for the red salad
“We believe that ecological plant breeding has to go beyond developing increasingly profitable cash crops,” plant breeder Kathrin Neubeck, head of an ecological farm in Germany
says about her reasons for participating in the open source seed movement
“We also have to advocate for the ecological breeding of rare varieties and protecting genetic resources.”
Kloppenberg is especially concerned about the global south
“With the saturation of most commercial seed markets in the USA
the big players are looking to the global south for new customers
Their target is the tens of millions of peasants and small farmers who still save
exchange and even sell seed.” Kloppenburg is currently working with farmers in Kenya to help empower them by registering their seeds under OSSI principles
Seed breeders who commit to the OSSI pledge allow buyers to use what they have developed however they like
and to include this Pledge with any transfer of these seeds or their derivatives.”
Examples of OSSI varieties include dwarf tomatoes, bred for people with little space by small farmers in North Carolina and Australia who worked together and exchanged information across continents. A new rye
has been developed with the help of crowdfunding in Germany specifically for the sandy soil in East Germany and is for the first time available in bakeries this fall
wheat and nearly everything else you need to cook dinner
cannabis breeders are interested in the OSSI strategy
“Cannabis is going to be a multibillion dollar market,” he says
They are interested in using the open source license to protect themselves while making the seeds available to others.”
where initially only a few users developed open source software like Linux
the market share of open source seeds is currently too small to be measured
and make room for local and regional interests
“It’s a delicate seedling,” Kotschi says about OSS
