Australia-headquartered company didn’t plan to remain a single-asset company
“We’re not done yet with Kathleen Valley – there’s a bit of work to be done there to finish the ramp up and then get it into steady state
so there’s more to be done to see where we can go in terms of organic growth around Kathleen Valley,” he said
“But we don’t want to stay a single-asset company
we did a strategy review and we’d like to think that
these opportunities could be in the form of further exploration success; a partnership with another company to acquire an asset near production; or even participating in brines
“We’re open to exploration [of opportunities] because we want to diversify our earnings away from just Kathleen Valley,” he said
Liontown produced its first spodumene concentrate at Kathleen Valley in mid-2024
it has produced more than 117,000 tonnes of concentrate and shipped 92,000 tonnes
stockpiling the difference for the mill ahead of a planned underground transition
The mill has achieved a targeted run rate of 2.4 million tonnes per year
“It was a great effort by the team to deliver on time
which is very rare in construction projects of this size and especially having to contend with a post-Covid global market which had supply chain and resourcing issues,” he noted
The company originally said the Kathleen Valley plant will have a mining capacity of 3 million tonnes per year of ore by the end of the first quarter
An expansion would then eventually increase this capacity to 4 million tonnes per year
a move which is expected to yield about 700,000 tonnes per year of spodumene concentrate
But weaker lithium market conditions led the company to rethink its timeframe for the ramp-up and expansion
Fastmarkets’ spodumene, 6% Li2O min, spot price, cif China peaked at $8,287.50 per tonne in December 2022
before additional capacity and softening demand contributed to prices falling back to as low as $725 per tonne in September 2024
“In November last year, we had to do a reset of the strategy of the business, given lithium market conditions
One of the key elements of that reset was that we were going to slow the ramp up and defer the expansion to 4 million tonnes
because we simply weren’t going to put more tonnes into an oversupplied market,” Ottaviano told Fastmarkets
Ottaviano said that the optionality to ramp up to 3 million tonnes and expand further is still there
what the right market conditions would be for expansion
If those market conditions present themselves and are
sustainable – because we don’t want the market to peak
and find the price drops again – then we will commit to it,” he noted
adding: “It would take about 18 months after that decision to actually put the expansion in place.”
Key signals the company is eyeing include inventory levels
and which projects are in the development phase
which will mark a significant turning point
It’s not so much the price — it’s the foundations that potentially indicate that ultimately
The transition to underground mining is expected to be completed in early 2027 or maybe slightly sooner
in addition to being one of the pioneers of underground mining in lithium
the transition will give Liontown a competitive advantage on three fronts: access to clean ore
noting that the strategy is to adjust supply volumes to maximize margins over volume
“The typical tendency of a mining company is to push out the volume as much as it can
because the more volume you put out over the same fixed cost base
we have to pay an upfront deposit,” he said
Liontown has instead opted to preserve cash by reducing volumes
“It’s more beneficial than spending cash and hoping that we generate more revenue into an oversupplied market
So let’s preserve the cash as opposed to pushing the extra tonnes to get lower unit costs,” he added
South Korean-based LG Energy Solution (LGES)
are all foundation customers for the spodumene concentrate produced at Kathleen Valley from mid-2024
Initially all contracts were made for five years
but LGES and Liontown recently formed a strategic partnership
which extends the offtake agreement for an additional ten years
The contract with Ford also includes an option to extend the agreement for a further five years by mutual agreement
Around 90% of Liontown’s production is in long-term contracts
although this could change in the future to allow more in the spot market
“When Liontown initially signed its offtake agreements
with very limited liquidity in the spot market
“So potentially in the future we may rely on the spot market as a preference on chemicals
rather than some of the indices,” he added
Now the company is in production it is starting to explore options in physical pricing
“We’ve got a couple of spot cargoes coming up and we might trial a few things
We’re still very much committed to the concept,” Ottaviano added
Ottaviano said that part of the assessment is whether it makes sense to go into refining at all
conventional wisdom in the mining sector is to stop at the point of the first sellable product
because that is where the highest margin should reside
but all the partners recognize that the economics have to compete with China
there’s no point doing it,” Ottaviano told Fastmarkets
“We would probably be in a position to make the decision within the next 18 months
But there’s another overlaying factor here: if the world is serious about EV [electric vehicles] and diversification of supply chain
then we have to make these western supply chains work and compete,” he said
The end result would likely focus on carbonate
Lithium producers prefer lithium carbonate production as it is used in the production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries while hydroxide is used in nickel cobalt battery chemistries
The Chinese will also put hydroxide in LFP batteries as well
but their preference is carbonate,” he said
“A lot of hydroxide refineries have added carbonate back ends
and therefore they can take spodumene and produce carbonate
Once upon a time this was not as cost effective as brine to carbonate — now it is
Ottaviano said that the reason Liontown chose customers that are at or close to the end of the battery value chain is because they’re the ones that are ultimately going to determine battery chemistries and the company wanted to be agile to react.
the LFP and the hybrids of LFP seem to be the dominant chemistry and potentially will remain so for a little while,” he told Fastmarkets
“I think there will be a place for the NCM]s [nickel cobalt manganese batteries] in the high-performance vehicles
It’s tough to see at the moment,” he added
Ottaviano said that while there has been work on alternatives such as solid-state batteries, development is still some way off. He remained unconvinced on the prospects for sodium ion batteries, but was optimistic on the outlook for the use of lithium in batteries for energy storage systems (ESS)
noting that some market participants are forecasting than the stationary battery market could even be bigger than batteries for electric vehicles
“The technology that’s developed in the whole control systems behind the big battery farms is now of such a quality that it doesn’t matter what’s driving the power source
gas — a lot of them will have battery augmentation
because of its ability to buffer the grid,” he said
“There are of course other battery chemistries
But if demand is as significant as people are saying
there’ll be room in the bed for everybody,” he added
Recycling is meanwhile an interesting potential sector for Liontown
with a partnership in this area also a possibility
but recycling provides opportunities on a whole range of commodities
It’s effectively a different form of mining,” he noted
“Recycling will be a form of the supply curve,” he said

In anticipation of the completion of works between Anagnina and Ottaviano
Metro A service is rescheduled with some partial closures
Metro A service is suspended between Anagnina and Subaugusta
The suspension affects the central Arco di Travertino-Ottaviano section from Aug
a shuttle bus service is provided with up to 90 active buses
Metro A is interrupted between Arco di Travertino and Ottaviano
the connection is provided by the MA15 bus shuttle
Routes are regular along the Ottaviano-Battistini and Arco di Travertino-Anagnina sections
The service schedule will be as follows: last Metro A and MA15 shuttle runs at 9 p.m.; after 9 p.m
the connection will be provided by MA bus line until 11:30 p.m
MA bus line will be active until 1:30 a.m.)
Metro A will resume the usual service on the entire line
with the usual times always related to track renewal works
which will return to be carried out only in the evenings and at night: from Sunday to Thursday Metro A active from 5.30 am and until 9 pm
then on the street the replacement bus line MA
On Fridays and Saturdays regular metro service with last runs from terminals at 1.30 am
that there is always the nMA night bus line
Find the details of the replacement service for the MA15 on the ATAC website
The work on the Anagnina-Ottaviano section began in July last year
and was articulated with evening closures of the Metro A at 9 p.m.
while on Fridays and Saturdays the normal closure at 1:30 a.m
ATAC points out in a note that these are "indispensable works that cannot be postponed
and that will lead to new tracks on the entire line
improving quality and regularity of service. The Metro A renewal process will then be completed in 2024 with track replacement on the final section between Ottaviano and Battistini
which will be carried out thanks to Jubilee funds and will be completed in time for the Holy Year" of 2025
is to be carried out on a fixed site because "work is being done on a portion of the tracks in a very critical position
in limited areas and spaces incompatible with the reopening of the metro every morning." The note explains that ATAC
will engage a specialized contractor and its technicians during the central vacation period to " condense the limitation of the service to the time when the demand for transport decreases significantly
will also be possible to aim for the early conclusion of the work
in order to be able to enjoy the entire line with normal hours during the upcoming Christmas holidays
The ongoing work on Metro A is part of the wide-ranging transformation of transportation services in which ATAC has been engaged since 2022 and which is investing in
not only network infrastructure but also the fleet
More than a billion has already been earmarked until 2026 for the purchase of about a thousand new buses
with the aim of bringing the average age of the fleet to five years at the end of 2024
which is part of the extensive tramway renewal plan
and for improvements to network infrastructure
The ongoing track renewal on Metro A is part of the broader context of resuming maintenance work and also covering extraordinary
Working to renew an extremely complex infrastructure such as a metro line in operation requires expertise
experience and organizational skills: the commitment that ATAC is putting into it is full
all with the essential goal of returning a vastly improved service to the city."

Courtesy of SourcebooksTeen Vogue: What inspired you to write Girl World
Patricia Ottaviano: When I was in seventh grade
I went through a very traumatic experience with my group of friends
my close friends decided I was no longer part of their “group,” and the result was about 10 months of constant bullying
But it was mostly the subtle bullying like the dirty looks
and the prank calls — the stuff that stayed under the radar
I want Girl World to help guide young girls through these types of situations
and I planned it out so that each chapter is another scenario that girls often go through
For example: what do you do if you feel your friend is speaking badly about you
Or how do you handle the ugly side of social media
TV: Did your experience in seventh grade lead you to study psychology
PO: I think subconsciously it definitely did
Because of that experience I was always very attuned to relationships
and over time I realized that’s what I kept coming back to
I wanted to figure out relationships and figure out this universal experience that happens with girls when they’re dealing with relational aggression
TV: How do you help girls translate the advice in your book to real life
I have a nonprofit organization called Sister Soldier
and it’s an anti-bullying and empowerment program for young girls
I go into their schools and speak to them about transforming their relationships with their peers
but I’m also very big on self-confidence and self-esteem
and am traveling around to 26 states over the next few months
Hyundai actually donated a car that has “Sister Soldier” written on it
we fill out apology cards and compliment cards
and there’s also a section about becoming your own best friend
to develop a strong sense of self-love and a strong self-identity because from there
they’ll be happier and they’ll treat each other in a kinder way
TV: What do you think are the major causes of bullying right now
and what do you think that girls can do to prevent it
PO: I think the major cause of bullying is girls being unable to process feelings correctly and address them correctly
so they’re acting out in all sorts of different ways
we are tempted to react right away without taking the time to relax and decide how best to move forward
I do think that during our middle and high school years
we don’t have the steps to necessarily handle conflicts appropriately and kindly
there’s a clear-cut division of power between the bully and the target
there’s this equality between the two people
and they’re both really negative to each other
I think we need to reflect on our behaviors as well
to make sure that we’re holding ourselves to the same standards we hold our friends
TV: How do you think girls can combat cyberbullying
PO: People are far more comfortable saying something behind a screen
It’s so much easier to look into a screen and act on negative impulses
and put people down when you don’t have to look them in the eye — the internet is a shield that girls can hide behind
What you see on your screen is your choice
So it’s all about decreasing the negatives and increasing the positives
You need to limit your exposure to people who post inappropriate or negative (boastful
I think you need to flood your news feed (and your own followers) with positivity
just continuously follow things that brighten your day
You need to be proactive with what you see on social media
how would you advise girls on dealing with toxic friends in real life
PO: I think you need to surround yourself with people who lift you up
people who make you feel good — those are the friendships you need to make a priority
you need to seek those and actively find them just like you actively find positive accounts on social media
I do believe that your gut is your compass
so anyone who does things that don’t sit well with you
You need to recognize and acknowledge the tiny things that are bad — like if your friend purposely makes you feel inferior — so that things don’t intensify
and your relationship with this person doesn’t turn into a bullying episode
TV: Why do you think it’s important that we view "girl drama" as bullying
PO: These subtle forms of bullying are super-significant
not only to your relationships with other people
but also to your relationship with yourself
and they can cause girls to ultimately suffer from anxiety
They can completely shatter a girl’s self-esteem
so we need to place more attention on the little ways that we hurt one another
and how significant the consequences can be

her overall sensibility is elegant and timeless
the asymmetrical metallic bustier and white tuxedo she designed for supermodel Bella Hadid to wear to Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards
It was a fashion moment that was simultaneously high-octane and understated
both in step with the current mood in fashion but also classic
It’s sumptuous fashion moments like that one that have attracted not only other celebrities (including Karolína Kurková
and Emily Ratajkowski) to Ottaviano’s work
but also a healthy base of private clients across the country
A graduate of The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City
Ottaviano apprenticed at both Oscar de la Renta and Marc Jacobs
she knows a thing or two about building a business
While her current focus is maximizing loyalty with her core group of private clients
she’s also partnering with the right stockists and dressing the right celebrities to build her brand
Ottaviano is one of the 2018 nominees for Fashion Group International’s prestigious Rising Star Awards and
in addition to producing two ready-to-wear collections per year
also just launched a full-fledged custom bridal atelier in Manhattan
Ottaviano’s finely honed appreciation for exceptional design and superb construction are evident everywhere in her work
