How do you beat a rider who has 28 Giro stage wins to her name
Lucinda Brand had to solve this question in Stage 3 of the 2021 Giro d’Italia Femminile
Four riders entered the final kilometer vying for the win
but when one is Marianne Vos the opportunity is not equal
Lucinda had an impossible task: to find a way to beat the fast finish legs of Vos
who knew her compatriot was the biggest threat
kept a close watch on the Trek-Segafredo rider
Lucinda played the finale as best she could
and when the door opened as the road bent to the left
“The finish was slightly up until 75 meters to the finish line
But Vos anticipated the jump and was quickly on Brand’s wheel
There was no stopping one of the most decorated riders in road
cyclocross and track from taking her 29th Giro win
“It’s really hard to beat Marianne in a sprint
it was really hard to get away,” added Brand
“It was a difficult breakaway with strong and quick riders
and I think I got the best out of it,” she said
An emotional Vos pointed to the sky as she crossed the line
dedicating the win to fellow cyclocross competitor Jolien Verschueren who had passed away two days earlier to cancer
The breakaway went away on the penultimate GPM of the stage
and with no threats to the pink jersey of Anna Van der Breggen
the quartet built a lead of four minutes coming into the last kilometers
“We saw already on paper this was a really nice stage for me,” explained Brand
“It’s been a long time since we have seen rain in the Giro
There were a lot of up and down and corners
so it was a great stage to get in a breakaway.”
It was apparent the Stage 3 win would come from one of the four
Sometimes finishing second is not a hard pill to swallow
The conditions were perfect for Evie Richards' career result

For New Beginnings: Paul Black Talks To Saad Qureshi At OVADA
as the artist opened his studio at OVADA in Oxford for an informal exhibition of work in progress
Qureshi is currently working on a new oeuvre of work as part of an Arts Council England funded Research and Development project
The open studio is extended into OVADA’s gallery space to accommodate the new large-scale pieces that the artist is currently working on
allowing the viewer to witness an insiders view of Qureshi’s practice
Qureshi is working in charcoal and red brick dust to create drawings that explore other worldly environments; abstracted landscapes that form a relationship between drawing and sculpture through materiality
with imagery somewhere between the real and the imagined
The artist creates a series of mysterious red landscapes akin to the topographies of some unknown planet
Qureshi juxtaposes sculptural elements with his dust drawings
insinuating a relationship where the landscapes become environments for the artist’s sculptures
Qureshi was kind enough to talk to Artlyst about the relationships between his drawing and sculpture
and giving the viewer the opportunity to experience the work in progress
Since graduating with an MFA from The Slade School of Fine Art in 2010
Qureshi has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally
Solo shows include Gazelli Art House in London and the Aicon Gallery in New York
Group exhibitions include the Venice Biennale 2015
and the Museum voor Moderne Kunst (Arnhem)
Selected prizes: Arts Council England Research Award
and the Royal British Society of Sculptors Bursary Award
Residencies include the BBC2 “School of Saatchi” (London) and the International Art Zone
Qureshi’s works are held in the Farjam Foundation Collection (Dubai)
the Creative Cities Collection (Beijing) and the Boston Consulting Group Collection
Upcoming exhibitions include a solo show in November 2016 at Nunu Fine Art
and a group show at Jhaveri Contemporary in Mumbai
Qureshi has recently been awarded the Land Securities NOVA Public art commission
to create a new installation for the public realm in Westminster
Oxfordshire Visual Arts Development Agency strives to develop high quality visual arts in the South East region by providing a diverse and interdisciplinary programme of inclusive exhibitions

The Shield jersey and Ovada bibtights are the latest additions to Isadore’s collection
both with the aim to keep riders on their bikes through winter in comfort and style
At first glance you can tell the Ovada bibtights are designed
for deep winter - they feel akin to putting on a wetsuit
but also a touch inflexible - initially my pair were tight over my lower leg and knee
but happily the fit relaxed slightly after a few uses
The bibtight’s features are well thought out - there are reflective sections over your lower leg
which complement panels of extra-thick Schoeller elastic membrane on the front of your thighs
to make sure your quads stay warm enough to keep working well
Both fabrics are finished with NanoSphere technology
which is a weather-resistant surface treatment Isadore claims mimics the self-cleaning effect of certain plants
In reality the treatment isn’t quite as prolific as the hype but the tights do repel water and mud uncommonly well and it stopped them looking too ransacked after particularly rotten rides
Tested in combination with the Ovada tights was Isadore’s new Shield jersey
It’s casual aesthetics are a marked departure from other designs currently on the market
The jersey is a merino bi-component material blend composed of 53% polyester
merino wool is a refreshing addition to the jersey’s make-up
The natural properties of merino fit ideally with the premise of the Shield jersey - it offers a combination of breathability and insulation that is still unsurpassed by synthetic fabrics
with one of Isadore’s 100% merino baselayers underneath
temperature regulation is much more dynamic - if you work hard
the jersey has the insulation to warm you up
but when you ease off - on a descent let’s say - the merino element allows a level of breathability that stops you overheating way more effectively than a synthetic garment
where more often you get hot and can’t cool down all that quickly
so for me the jersey functioned brilliantly in a temperature range of around 5-10°C
yet the tights are so heavy duty they didn’t come into their own until the temperature flirted with zero
the Ovada bibtights and Shield jersey-plus-baselayer outfit feels a little imbalanced in British conditions - when it is cold/grotty enough to wear the Ovada tights
you’ll need something extra like Isadore’s Essential jacket on top
and likewise when it is mild enough for the jersey without the jacket
This should not detract from the quality of the individual garments though - 3 top layers and the Ovada tights will see you through the depths of winter
baselayer and something like Isadore’s Thermoroubaix tights will do brilliantly for autumn and spring
Isadore dares to do things a bit differently

has sold a Glamourdale x Totilas colt foal to an undisclosed new owner in Denmark who will have the youngster in training with Olympic dressage riders Cathrine Dufour and Nathalie Zu Sayn-Wittgenstein when it’s time for his early education
The fancy black 2023 colt will be housed at Blue Hors
training and competition stables in Europe
a four-year-old KWPN NA (Totilas x Negro x Westpoint) bred by Danielle Landreville of Mont Atoca Dressage in Ste Melani
“After searching three years for a suitable Totilas daughter to add to our breeding program
with the help of Tanya and Evi Strasser we were able to obtain Ovada MTA,” said breeder Theresa Steele
“Tanya was instrumental in putting together the deal and making sure the sale went through smoothly
We purchased Ovada as a three-year-old in July and we made the decision to breed her right away to the best dressage stallion in the world – Glamourdale [via frozen semen].”
will be staying on the farm until March 2024
Steele Family Warmbloods is a small breeding farm on the coast of the Bay of Fundy run by the mother-daughter team of Theresa and her daughter Lindsay
These dedicated dressage horse enthusiasts have built a “small but mighty” breeding program over the past 25 years which currently includes seven mares and a stallion
a registered Westphalian licensed by the Canadian Warmblood Horse Breeders Association
“We normally have between two and five foals per year and we have sold horses to most provinces in Canada
as well as Florida and New York,” said Steele proudly
“We are constantly upgrading our mares and gradually adding top-bred KWPN mares and importing semen for breeding AI.”
Theresa explains that how the sale happened is “a bit of a fairy tale
We posted a picture of him on a Facebook page in Europe at a day old; I didn’t even mentioned that he was for sale
Soon I started receiving messages from the buyer asking questions
When I found out the person making the inquiries was from Denmark I thought ‘oh darn
when they find out the colt is in Canada they will lose interest.’ Then I thought this must be one of those scams that horse owners have to beware of LOL
But after about six weeks of talking and figuring out the details
we finalized the deal.” She adds that there was also considerable interest in the handsome black colt on this side of the world
“We are so incredibly excited that one of our foals will have the greatest opportunity to reach the stars with this wonderful and supportive new owner,” says Theresa
“Having the absolute best opportunity for him to be raised and ridden by the best in the world is just an amazing dream come true!”

The 34-year-old’s victory was her 234th career win
cementing her position as ‘the greatest of all time.’
Vos dedicated her victory to Belgian cyclo-cross talent Jolien Verschueren
who died on Thursday at the age of 31 after fighting brain cancer for three years
Verschueren was an accomplished cyclo-cross rider and a schoolteacher
“It's so strange to lose Jolien Verschueren this week due to cancer and then we're here
we think we suffer but there's so much more in life," Vos said in a tearful post-race interview
I knew how dedicated she was and I wanted to do a special race for her.”
Vos' history of winning at the Giro d’Italia Donne spans 14 years
since she won stage 2 into Correggio in the 2007 edition of the race.
Vos has won at least one stage of every Giro Donne she has started
where she also won the GC and took 4 stage victories
Vos won four stages in 2019 and three stages in 2020
where she also secured the points classification.
Vos’ Giro d'Italia Donne record of 29 stage wins now outstrips retired German rider Petra Rossner’s wins by 12
On the stage 3's 135km route from Casale Monferrato to Ovada
Vos spent much of the race in a breakaway with Lucinda Brand
Vos then comfortably outsprinted her rivals
quashing any doubt in her form that may have arisen after she lost out in a sprint at La Course one week ago.
the Jumbo-Visma rider was the favourite to take the victory.
The gap between the break of four and the peloton increased to 3:44 during the stage despite chasing from Ceratizit-WNT and Team BikeExchange
As the breakaway riders got closer to the finish while still maintaining over a two-minute lead
it became clear that they would contest the win between them.
Brand dropped to the back of the group in an effort to launch off her rivals’ wheels in the sprint and the multidisciplinary rider was the first to start the charge to the line.
eventually winning by over a bike length to take her record 29th Giro d’Italia Donne victory.
“Of course it's incredible to win 29 times when you still can do your passion and when you can do what you love,” Vos said
Vos is likely to contest for stage wins on further occasions this year
and where she could bump up her stage win tally to 30 or more
Warrior Artists At OVADA: Paul Black Reviews The Collective’s Latest Work
Image: What Is Done Cannot Be Undone: A collaboration between the artists of Warrior Studios with OVADA Gallery, installation detail. Photo: P A Black © 2016.
In fact music is a reference in the work, bringing in analogies of all encompassing sound within a space. Electric guitars form sculptural elements buried in the mass of materials, highlighting this convulsive pulse of an installation, where objecthood multiplies like the repeats from echolocation, almost as if the artists are attempting to explore the visual nature of sound.
This is art that is solely about process – the nature of practice – after all there is no aesthetic to a work without a conclusion? Some members of the collective attempt – and even succeed – in maintaining some sort of formal aesthetic, but this only serves to create islands of individual works within the installation, while other members seem to fill the space with a viral fervour.
Warrior Studios is a collective of 12 artists that are currently: Jane Campbell, David Degreef-Mounier, Phil Dobson, Hugh Gilmour, James Alec Hardy, Jez Jacobs, Jeremy Jeffs, Gary Kempston, Duncan McAfee, Michael Rodgers, Pauline Smith, and Federica Dalla Vecchia. Founded in the late 1980s, the Warrior artists have recently sought to work in a more collaborative way, exhibiting together and producing artists’ publications under the banner of Warrior Press.

last two decades wines from Piedmont saw unprecedented success in the global market
Barbaresco and the many other wine appellations based on the grape Nebbiolo
a vast number of the high-quality wines from the region are produced from this grape variety
Yet wines produced from Dolcetto are struggling to get the recognition that they may deserve
Let me start by addressing Dolcetto’s biggest fortune and misfortune: Dolcetto is an early ripening grape
it ripens two to three weeks before its counterparts Nebbiolo and Barbera
producers in appellations that are focused on Nebbiolo and Barbera
tend to plant Dolcetto in those vineyards that are less favourable
reserving the best vineyard to other grapes
The wines are typically produced to be ready for bottling in the spring following the harvest
Dolcetto has gained a reputation for wines that are simple and best enjoyed young
Dolcetto grapes from DOCG regions are worth a second look says Mattia Scarpazza
vice president of Dolcetto Ovada Superiore DOCG
says: “Dolcetto can ripen in those less favourable sites
but the resulting wines are hardly ever of great interest.” But then adds: “For Dolcetto to produce high-quality wines that are complex and age-worthy
it needs time to fully mature its tannins in the vineyards
as they are found in the pips, whereas Nebbiolo’s tannins are found in its skins
The grapes that are allowed to fully ripen can handle more intricate and lengthy winemaking techniques
where I find that things become interesting
On one side Dolcetto wines can be a source of income months or even in some cases years before Nebbiolo wines
which is something favourable to producers in those appellations where the grape is predominant
you have the case that Dolcetto can produce wines that are age-worthy and have a sense of place
that unfortunately are lying under the radar of most consumers
for Dolcetto are unquestionably the three DOCGs: Dogliani; Diano D’Alba; and
Those three regions are focused solely on the production of Dolcetto
and the best vineyards are reserved for the grape
The reason Ovada was awarded DOCG status so late was certainly not for the lack of historical background
As Oddone says: “The region of Ovada was the first Dolcetto DOC in Italy in 1972 and is where the modern clone was generated.”
Ovada DOCG quality and classification is divided into three tiers: Dolcetto d’Ovada Superiore; “Vigna”; and “Riserva” or “Vigna Riserva” which are interchangeable
Yields are limited to 49Hl/ha and (42hl/ha for “Vigna” and “Riservas”) in comparison
and with a minimum potential alcohol of 12.5% and (13% hl/ha for “Vigna” and “Riservas”)
Wines need to mature for at least 12 months for Superiore and 20 months to 24 months for “Riserva” and “Vigna Riserva”
typically ageing is carried out in large wooded barrels
to aid oxygenation without adding flavours
Fermentation are typically 10 to 20 days long
Commonly seen are open vats fermentation in both stainless steel and what the locals refer as ‘Botti’
typically very old.Exceptions do exist but are somewhat limited
So what does a high-quality Dolcetto need to have
Oddone is crystal clear: “Supple and ripe tannins
as Dolcetto tannins are prevalently found in the pips
Many things are needed to achieve integrated tannins
Vineyard management is essential to ensure the final wines have balanced tannins and complex aromas
As Oddone explains: “Dolcetto is vigorous and needs more hours of pruning than Nebbiolo
ensuring that the canopy is balanced and that the yields are low
This also helps achieve ripeness without loosing acidity
of which Dolcetto doesn’t have as much Nebbiolo or Barbera
many producers outside the DOCGs are not investing the time and effort
and are producing too many wines that are unbalanced
is the image that consumers have of Dolcetto
But if you focus on the quality Dolcettos then you can find wines with a real sense of place
as they move towards black fruits and savoury notes
Ovada is one of the key regions for producing quality Dolcetto
Ovada is a relatively small region, close to the more prestigious Gavi area.Dolcetto produced here is notably different from the other two DOGCs and the various DOCs. Ovada wines are focused, rich in flavours, and have a hearty and savoury undernote. Cascina Gentile
releases its Ovada three years after harvesting
Give them another couple of years and they really express their full potential
tar-like aromas.Although their acidity is not pronounced
the opulent flavour profile helps with the extra ageing
Other notable producers from the area are Rossi Contini, which produces an age-worthy single vineyard ‘Vigneto Ninan’ from a 0.7 plot on pure white chalk soil
aged in used barriques for 20 months and further aged in bottle for at least a year
and green tea aromas and it can also age beautifully
Dolcetto is an underrated grape that can produce fantastic wines
that span from gastronomical (pairing amazingly with aperitifs
and mediterranean cuisine) to complex long-lived wines
It will take a few more years and a lot of effort to raise the global interest
For buyers and consumers there is the opportunity to experience one of the most historical grapes of Piedmont
wines are well priced especially compared to the more famous appellations of Piedmont
With more consumers becoming aware of Nebbiolo
more will start looking at what else is available from Piedmont
Dolcetto-focused producers must take this opportunity to establish themselves

At the Geirino municipal sports complex in Ovada
the athletics track has been completely redeveloped
giving the entire sports centre a new face
The Geirino municipal multi-sports complex in Ovada
outdoor and indoor five-a-side football pitches
and a natural grass football pitch surrounded by a 400-metre
the track was now in a dilapidated condition
which was further aggravated after the flooding event of 4 October 2021 when the town was flooded by the waters of the Orba torrent
the project to remake the track had already been outlined
was completed at the end of last summer.
The intervention ensured the upgrading of the existing athletics track in Ovada with the latest quality features and therefore with an absolutely relevant potential longevity
a sports centre of certain excellence was created in which athletes will be able to train
the project included the renovation of most of the areas of the athletics track; in addition to the entire track ring
the double platform for the long jump and triple jump on the west side
the renovation and completion of the partial lunette in the south area of the track (where the javelin throwing platform was also rebuilt) and the renovation of the pole vaulting platform in the north lunette
will hopefully be adapted to the requirements of the FIDAL regulations
in order to fill the existing gaps and make the track compliant with the requirements of the National Regulations
There are also plans to adapt the existing lighting system in order to improve energy efficiency by replacing the existing lighting fixtures with LED fixtures
and with the illumination required by the regulations in order to obtain FIDAL homologation

It’s an early-ripening variety – two to three weeks before Nebbiolo – and produces deeply coloured

Sprinter Wild was the fastest in a bunch finish
Kirsten Wild (Wiggle High5) sprinted to Giro Rosa victory on stage two
ahead of Giorgia Bronzini (Cylance) and Marianne Vos (WaowDeals Pro Cycling) in a fast finish following a 120 kilometre stage starting and finishing in Ovada
The hilly day featured rolling terrain in the first half
but this was followed by a flat 25 km run-in to the line
resulting in a tense final three kilometres
with two breakaway riders being swept up under the flamme rouge
to her team mate Lucinda Brand after the Sunweb rider collected bonus points and kicked off the chase in the last 15km
The peloton was treated to a 6km climb after just 2km of riding - but the 165 starting riders stayed largely together early on
A group of nine riders made a break for it with 103km to go
but were neutralised without too much bother from the peloton
The first intermediate sprint went to Sunweb's Leah Kirchmann with team mate Lucinda Brand just behind
Sheyla Gutiérrez (Cylance) attacked
and very quickly accumulated a gap of a minute
At the foot of the classified climb - Belforte Monferrato
with three chasers caught in the middle at 1-10
only Alice Maria Arzuffi (Bizkaia Durango–Euskadi Murias) was able to bridge to Gutiérrez
they had built up a 50s advantage - neither a threat to the GC
having started the race 3-11 and 2-23 down respectively
The gap increased to 1-45 with 40km to the line
reaching 2-50 with 28km left - and holding steady until 15km to go
and with 3km to go the lead had been cut to just 33s
A nail biting final kilometre saw the break caught with just 500 metres to the line
followed by Bronzini in second and Vos taking the final podium spot
Wild said: "the girls put me in the perfect position in the last 300 metres..
She added: "I didn't think about it as a sprint stage because it was quite uphill..
Brand keeps the maglia rosa on the shoulders of a Sunweb rider
commenting after the stage "that was the goal of the team today

has an impressive bloodline as its father is world champion Glamourdale and its grandfather on its mother’s side was Totilas
The foal has been sold to an undisclosed buyer in Denmark for an undisclosed amount

Steele Family Warmbloods is owned by Lindsay Steele and her mom
They currently have about 15 horses on the farm
no one to this point has crossed the Glamourdale and Totilas lines
Theresa said it took them three years to find the foal’s mother
“Because you’re breeding one legend to the daughter of another legend
you’re kind of hoping that the resulting foal is going to be something special,” she said
Theresa said they’ve always bred quality horses
with some having been sold to buyers in Florida
There are other breeders in Nova Scotia and across the Maritimes that have excellent programs and who sell horses all over North America
since European breeding programs are considered years ahead
it isn’t usually the case that a horse foal bred in Canada is sold across the Atlantic
Total Glamour will be heading to Europe in March 2024
“For them to look outside of Europe for a foal
She hopes this will help them start a new trend
She has received congratulations from just about every breeder in Canada and the United States
The new owner has told them they are working with Princess Nathalie Zu Sayn-Wittgenstein and Cathrine Dufour
he’ll have to prove himself against the very best,” Theresa said
The Steeles weren’t sure at first if the undisclosed buyer was legitimate
Theresa posted a photo of Total Glamour at one day old on a European Facebook page and began hearing from the buyer almost immediately
Theresa said this is a real feather in the hat of Steele Family Warmbloods
and Scots Bay with its hills and large pastures is a beautiful place to breed horses
Lindsay said she’s been riding for as long as she can remember
She has been in the barns of Olympians and has seen some fabulous horses
Lindsay recalls mentioning to her mom as soon as Total Glamour was born that she has never seen a colt as nice
“I kind of joked because my birthday was in July and mom asked me what I wanted
she realized Total Glamour had to go somewhere he could reach his potential and she is very excited to see him going to Europe
he could end up a world champion stallion or competing at the Olympics
Lindsay said European lines have been coming to North America since the advancement of artificial insemination technology
She said it was a difficult year for horse breeders in general with lower-than-normal conception rates
so they were particularly fortunate to be blessed with Total Glamour
Lindsay said the sale of Total Glamour is also a testament to Landreville’s breeding program
She said there are some famous riders who have come out of Nova Scotia
including Canadian Olympian Brittany Fraser-Beaulieu
she had to move to Quebec to achieve her dreams with the national dressage team
Lindsay said it could mean that other international buyers look to them for their next champion
If the genetics are there and more European buyers begin taking notice of Nova Scotia
it will be good for all horse breeders in the province
but Nova Scotia has never been the equestrian centre of Canada or anything
and anybody that comes out of here has to work twice as hard and they have to travel,” Lindsay said
“If the horses are here and people start getting recognized
then maybe it creates more opportunities for other people as a whole
