They say there are only two certainties in life: death and taxes
But we might as well add the Pagani Zonda to that list
because a new version of the immortal supercar seems to appear every few years
the AMG-powered performance machine is still making headlines in 2025 with yet another fresh take on its naturally aspirated V-12 formula
was replaced three years ago by the Utopia
Pagani hasn’t shared technical details, but the car appears to feature a full carbon fiber body with a stunning blue tint. Several components are finished in exposed carbon fiber, including the windshield frame, side mirror caps, headlight housings, and numerous vents. The blue accents carry over to the center-lock wheels, brake calipers, quad exhaust tips, and the taillight surround.
The Zonda is living proof that you can teach an old dog new tricks. Despite being a 26-year-old design, it looks as breathtaking today as it did when the original Zonda C12 debuted at the 1999 Geneva Motor Show. Power still comes from an AMG-sourced V-12, likely the 7.3-liter version with up to 760 horsepower, considering this Unico is seemingly based on the Zonda 760 Roadster. We want to think it also has a gated shifter, though interior images haven’t surfaced yet.
It’s interesting to realize that while we’ve seen a dozen new/old Zondas over the last years, the Huayra hasn’t been even remotely as popular. Why is that? Sure, it’s a newer car, but Pagani made more Huayras. It’s a question that probably only the ultra-rich can answer.

John McEnroe may have been disputing a line call back in 1981
but we’d like to imagine he’s uttering that famous phrase once again upon learning that Pagani has just unveiled ANOTHER new Zonda
Still one of the most bonkers-looking things on four wheels, though. And we actually hope Pagani never stops fiddling. This latest one isn’t actually a new chassis, but an old car that has been “entirely reimagined”, according to Pagani. It’s now a one-off and is apparently inspired by the Kunlun Mountains in Asia.
That sky blue tinted carbon is rather glorious, as are all the other bits of naked carbon. Yep, there’s a whole lot of the woven stuff, but this is Pagani after all. It won’t have escaped your attention there’s also a giant roof scoop and double layer rear wing. Quite something, that.
We don’t know much else about the underpinnings, but it certainly looks a little like the rest of the 760 series Zondas, which would mean the 7.3-litre AMG V12 making 750bhp and 575lb ft of torque. Yeah, it's really quite serious.

Pagani, Supercars
Horacio Pagani is one of the most important car figures of his generation
The Argentine cut his teeth with Lamborghini before starting his own marque
Pagani is responsible for some truly crazy hypercars
But his personal collection might just top anything that he actually sells
DISCOVER SBX CARS – Bid now on supercar auctions powered by Supercar Blondie
not many know the full story of Horacio Pagani
the young Pagani moved from Argentina to Italy with his wife
He left for Italy in order to pursue his passion for supercars
After getting a job as a janitor with Lamborghini
he would climb so high that he would become the company’s Chief Engineer
Horacio’s ultimate vision was to create a car entirely out of carbon fiber
Lamborghini refused
concerned that their main rival – Ferrari – didn’t do that
Lamborghini’s short-sightedness would cost them in the long run
Because Horacio Pagani would establish Pagani Automobili in 1992
Aside from crafting some of the world’s best cars
His collection is so impressive that it is easier to name what he doesn’t have
It might not come as a shock to hear that Pagani has almost every variation of… Pagani
For one thing, there are several variations of the Zonda, his first supercar
Of course, Mr Pagani’s collection wouldn’t be complete without the Huayra
Chief among them is a stunning Huayra BC finished in silver with a black hood
non-Pagani section of the collection is equally as fabulous
he owns a Lamborghini Countach – a car that he helped create and design
He also owns a stunning Porsche 918 Spyder – one of the best hypercars ever created
Another cool car he owns is a Ford GT – the ’67 Heritage Edition
then don’t worry – because Pagani has that covered
Among the known collection is a Ferrari 275 GTB/4
One will also find among the epic collection a Ferrari F12 tdf
We must say – this has to be one of the coolest car collections you will ever find

The first Pagani Zonda rolled off the production line in 1999
the automaker’s factory is still pumping out one-off versions of the iconic supercar
This is despite the fact that the Zonda has been replaced
It’s important to note that Pagani is no longer building new Zondas from scratch. The last fresh model, the Arrivederci
the company continues to breathe new life into older Zondas through its Unico division
and this remarkable example is the latest in that ongoing series

This particular Zonda Roadster is a tribute to the Kunlun Mountains in China
a nod to the owner’s personal tastes
It features several upgrades we’ve seen on other reworked models
The entire body is crafted from carbon fiber
finished in a stunning blue exposed carbon fiber
it boasts a hood with large carbon fiber air vents and white racing stripes
The supercar rides on black wheels with blue center caps
and the rear is equipped with a wide range of aerodynamic enhancements
Pagani hasn’t provided any powertrain specifications about this one-off
but it’s safe to assume it has the same AMG-sourced 7.3-liter naturally aspirate V12 engine as other Zonda 760s that
There are no images of the supercar’s cabin available
so we don’t know if it’s been equipped with a stick shift or an automated manual
the V12 sings a symphony that few other production engines can match
As for how much the owner spent on these upgrades, we don’t have a concrete figure. But based on recent sales of other one-offs, it’s safe to assume this bespoke Zonda could be valued at a staggering $10 million or more

Cars, Pagani
This one-of-a-kind Pagani Roadster from China has a special source of inspiration – a mountain range
The Italian car giant released the details online
The auto is all thanks to its Unico customization program
VISIT SBX CARS – View live supercar auctions powered by Supercar Blondie
The Italian marque is no ordinary car manufacturer
In fact, our very own Alex Hirschi, AKA Supercar Blondie, got in on the action herself by opening the compartment of a Paganu Huayra and finding something special
But new details have come to light about a one-off Roadster
This unique program helps the owners of the hypercars to customize them as they please
“The Unico program was created precisely for all Pagani customers who dream of updating and customizing their Hypercar
without any limit: from mechanics to aesthetics
“It is possible to replace and update up to the last bolt of the car,” stated the company itself
This cool blue Zonda Roadster is a lone ranger
with the commission reportedly said to be for a buyer from China
The car has black wheels with blue caps alongside other exterior features
These include blue tailpipes that add to the dramatic look
all seemingly based on the design of the Zonda 760 Roadster
The marque shared the news on Instagram, explaining the Unico program and the special hypercar commission.
“‘Pagani Unico’ is a workshop of vision and invention, where bold dreams learn to breathe.
“This one was born in the silence of the Kunlun Mountains. A one-off Zonda, entirely reimagined – outside and in – following the client’s vision, detail by detail,” it stated.
The company also explained the color blue in detail and how the shell of the car even looks in the sun.
“Its blue is dense, mineral, almost liquid. In shadow, it holds the depth of stone. In sunlight, it gleams — sharp, electric, alive. A color that breathes, like the landscape it remembers,” Pagani explained.
Online, car fans were blown away by the one-of-a-kind car inspired by the beauty of China.
“Legend Pagani,” said one social media user.
“One of my life goals is just to see one of those artworks in real life,” said another.
Take a look at the incredible creation below.

A day prior to McLaren’s dominant Formula 1
It’s sometimes hard to believe that just over a decade..
The Unico is not a completely new creation but a heavily modified version of an existing chassis
While technical details have not been disclosed by Pagani
the car appears to sport a full carbon fiber body with an eye-catching blue tint
The blue accents from the body also show up on center-lock wheels
Power in the Zonda Unico is expected from an AMG-sourced V12 engine
probably the 7.3-liter one with up to 760hp
We assume this because this specific model appears to be based on the Zonda 760 Roadster
The Utopia Roadster represents the pinnacle of a continuous quest that merges sophisticated technology with timeless design
it continues the legacy of the Coupé version while introducing distinctive elements
Featuring a seamlessly integrated hard-top
it offers the flexibility of an open or closed driving experience
while maintaining the same weight as its counterpart
This vehicle celebrates the timeless allure of mechanical purity
to avant-garde design elements such as the gearbox and pedal system
where every mechanism is visible and meticulously crafted
It embodies Pagani’s most advanced technology
resulting from sophisticated aerodynamic studies and the integration of over forty composite material formulas
It is the first car to bring innovative technologies to the road
including the Pirelli Cyber™ Tyre sensor system
which allows the tires to talk to the vehicle improving its safety
The Roadster as a response to the car enthusiast’s dilemma
a car whose very name embodies the philosophy of a relentless pursuit towards perfection
an unattainable ideal that nonetheless inspires creators to aspire to excellence
came into being with the dual nature of Roadster and Coupé already written in its destiny
following the enthusiasm generated by previous models
unlike the roadster versions of the Zonda and Huayra – which were designed after their respective closed versions – here the development of the two variants took place jointly
What better way to solve the enthusiasts’ old dilemma
Gran Turismo aficionados have always debated as to which is the purer expression: a closed or open cabin
Both traditions boast a rich pedigree and supporters of the two contrasting options are often irreconcilable
The only way for Pagani to help resolve this quandary was to offer both versions
those who favor performance opt for coupés
since they tend to be lighter and more agile
The styling of the two versions is an expression of continuity
being the work of the same team of designers and engineers; a team united by common visions
working under the guidance of Horacio Pagani in the Modenese Atelier
The doors have the same elegant butterfly kinematics
When one wishes to travel under the open sky
transforming it into a piece of design to be looked at and admired
which can be stored in a suitcase in place of the vanity case that is usually located centrally behind the two seats
The same car can therefore convert into three different versions
each to be preferred depending on the season
the desire to feel enclosed and protected or in contact with the open air
the floor mats have a specific texture reminiscent of an outboard boat
the light-filled interior differs significantly compared to the Coupé
thanks to the presence of a single large roof window
Removing the hard-top brings the driver and passenger closer to nature
such that they experience the surrounding landscape in a unique way
perceiving smells and subtle changes in air temperature as the road winds up and downhill
As for the upholstery in the Utopia Roadster
the almost endless choice of colors and materials becomes even more important
since the car’s interior is constantly exposed to the gaze of onlookers
It is from this cabin that you see the world
and it is in this cabin that the world sees you
The style of an object is distinguished partly by the accessories that complement it
and the luggage items are one of the features that further embellish every Pagani Hypercar
two matching suitcases are made with leather-covered carbon inner shells
adorned with the emblematic Pagani ellipse
These can be stowed in two special compartments situated next to the engine
They are true gems of high-quality workmanship
where meticulous care has been devoted to every detail: from the selection of the leathers
which can either be coordinated with the car’s configuration or create a contrast to it
down to the smallest details such as the hinges
the small leather straps that muffle their noise and the feet pads incorporating the iconic four exhaust symbol
The range of accessories is further enriched by two matching garment bags
which in the Utopia are neatly positioned behind the headrests
The Roadster underscores the high-tech performance of the Utopia
Horacio Pagani is a pioneer of advanced composite materials; for almost forty years he has been experimenting with the most innovative solutions for his products
was one of the first road cars to use a monocoque in carbon fiber
a material at the time mainly reserved for the aerospace industry
thanks to continual investment in research
Pagani Automobili has developed know-how that has culminated in the Utopia Roadster
Current advances go well beyond the use of carbon fiber alone; in fact
there are over forty formulas of composite materials within the same Hypercar
These include Carbo-Titanium HP62-G2 and Carbo-Triax HP62
Technological sophistication has enabled the Utopia Roadster to maintain the same lightness as the Coupé
weighing in at only 1,280 kg (2,822 lb) [dry weight]
an incredible figure for a large Hypercar fitted with a V12 engine
This result was achieved thanks to a monocoque chassis entirely redesigned to optimize rigidity and resistance
without resorting to the heavy reinforcements usually required when a car roof is eliminated
Key objectives in the design of the Utopia were to achieve a low coefficient of aerodynamic resistance and significant aerodynamic downforce without resorting to protruding appendages
Pagani’s engineers conducted a meticulous study of air flows in the wind tunnel
Air is carefully guided and controlled through the wheel passages
channeled around the teardrop roof and along the sinuous sides
visible and yet harmoniously incorporated into the design
help to further improve aerodynamic efficiency by adapting to different driving conditions
The internal air flows for cooling and intake have also been perfected down to the last detail
making an essential contribution to the car’s performance and stability
Pagani Automobili has maintained its loyalty to the V12 engine and to its collaboration with Mercedes-AMG
world champion with the German manufacturer and supporter of Horacio Pagani’s pragmatic vision
This continuity has not stood in the way of progress: the team worked intensively on the version of the Pagani V12 destined for the Utopia
built in close collaboration with AMG engineers
who are in charge of its exclusive production for the Italian Hypercar
Each engine is entirely assembled by a single craftsman
The power output of 864 horsepower (635 kW)
does not do full justice to the incredible versatility of this mechanical system: capable of turning smoothly at low revs and delivering explosive acceleration when the driver wants to experience the full power of the Pagani engine
thanks partly to the prodigious torque of 1,100 Nm delivered extraordinarily
In collaboration with the British specialist firm Xtrac
Pagani has designed a transmission capable of handling the torque of the twin-turbo V12
while guaranteeing smooth and agreeable functioning in all conditions
Extremely compact and positioned transversely behind the engine
the seven-speed manual gearbox is connected to a light and adjustable triple-disc clutch
The cutting-edge technology employed in the fabrication of materials for the Utopia Roadster is not just about carbon: even the metal parts are incredibly sophisticated
are designed to guarantee both strength and lightness
today allows total control over every aspect of the production of components in aluminum
to manufacture with the most advanced equipment currently available
which also involves using the noble technique of milling from solid metal
The Utopia Roadster boasts extraordinary agility and exceptional road holding during cornering
guaranteeing an unrivaled driving sensation in all conditions
combined with the electronic differential and dynamic control system
while the electronic traction control ensures flawless movement despite the enormous power supply available
The Utopia Roadster delivers astonishing performance while remaining persistently intuitive
the driver never has to struggle with the car; it is always an exhilarating
Pirelli, an essential partner of Pagani Automobili from the prototyping and simulation phase with the aid of the most advanced AI technology, is supplying the Utopia Roadster with exclusive tires equipped with advanced sensor technology on the inside of the tread that become points of interaction between the car and the road surface. Thanks to the Pirelli Cyber™ Tyre
the tire’s sensors will send information to the vehicle’s stability control systems
to ensure maximum performance and the highest level of safety based on driving conditions
The Pirelli P ZERO™ Corsa and P ZERO™ Winter (standard) and the P ZERO™ Trofeo RS (optional)
are fitments developed specifically for the Pagani Utopia
in size 21” at the front and 22” at the rear
Every detail is an aesthetic and technical challenge
Inspired by the visionary genius of Leonardo da Vinci
who saw the union of Art and Science as the highest expression of human creativity
work at Pagani Automobili is tirelessly geared to ensure that design
and product manufacture are developed in an integrated process
meticulous attention being paid to every aspect of form and function
Ergonomics is studied down to the smallest detail: every control is positioned exactly where you would expect it to be
and is fashioned with taste and attention to its mechanical beauty
is as pleasant to look at as it is efficient to use
Every single element contributes to an overall sense of visual and tactile satisfaction
enhancing every gesture and making a drive in the Utopia Roadster a unique and inimitable experience
The Utopia’s seven-speed manual gearbox is a marvel of ultra-modern design
yet retains traditional mechanics and is operated by a classical gear lever with a titanium grille
An object of sophisticated workmanship that is as enchanting to the eye as it is enjoyable to the touch
Each and every part of the clearly visible mechanism is finished with the greatest care and attention
the polished knob itself providing an ideal grip
For those who prefer lightning-fast changes
there is the AMT automated gearbox controlled via paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel
Software strategies have further improved speed and comfort so that the driver feels as comfortable on the road as he does on the racetrack
Pagani Automobili has always been dedicated to the pursuit of timeless design
celebrating the elegance of manual control as the purest expression of mechanical art
it has embraced the enduring appeal of analog technology
enhancing the beauty and functionality of knobs
The development of sophisticated components
such as a manual gearbox capable of meeting the high expectations of Pagani’s customers
today represents an even more formidable technological challenge than in the past
The steering wheel is the very symbol of a car; that of the Utopia is a symbol of Pagani’s savoir-faire
No one had ever designed a steering wheel quite like this
In appearance it looks almost ordinary: one immediately notices
But it is in the detail that its uniqueness is revealed: a closer look shows that the rim
and hub are a single piece of lightweight metal
a five-axis milling machine works continuously for 28 hours to achieve this extraordinary object weighing only 1.6 kg (3.53 lb)
the discarded waste being reused as recycled material for other industries
and carefully inspects each steering wheel
The result is an extraordinary feat of aesthetics and engineering
The feeling inside the Utopia Roadster is absolutely unique
even in the very special context of high-performance cars
one may be almost intimidated by the numerous “old-fashioned” features
But in actual fact this is where the pleasure really begins
Any trepidation simply vanishes as soon as you experience the naturalness of the drive itself
a magnificent piece of mechanical artistry
but above all you appreciate how perfectly it fits into the palm of your hand
becoming familiar after the first few gear shifts
which at first sight may appear extravagant
yet are designed with a constant focus on efficiency and transparency
The Utopia does not oblige drivers to adapt their gestures
and even more so when the full potential of the Pagani V12 is unleashed
The gear lever communicates every movement of the mechanism
yet clearly perceptible to those who love mechanics
In addition to the sensation of almost unlimited power
Shifting gears exactly when desired restores sensuality to the driving
Whether you let the car cruise in sixth or seventh gear at low revs or push each gear to its limit
the transmission responds immediately to the engine’s commands
We know from the technical specifications that advanced technology translates into performance
but the precise measure of efficiency is also pleasure
The carbo-titanium monocoque frame gives the car an exceptional ratio of lightness to structural rigidity
it provides an outstanding driving experience
This rigidity creates a connection between the driver and the road
giving the impression that the hand on the steering wheel touches the asphalt directly
perceiving its variations in texture and grip
and instant liveliness on ignition without having to overstrain the engine
It also translates into agility when cornering: the car turns flat
surging into the straight again with perfect precision
the immediate response to every foot command makes the experience of deceleration a pleasure on par with acceleration
The driver commands and the car obeys instantly
as if it understands and even shares the pleasure of playing with the road
The analog instrumentation of the Utopia Roadster restores a way of relating to the driver that was all too quickly abandoned with the advent of digital displays
harking back to the handcrafted inspiration of haute horlogerie
offer a direct connection with the road and the engine
The simple movement of the hands is equally informative and far more intuitive than the reading of numbers
the central cluster of four dials allows essential information such as oil pressure and temperatures to be read almost from the corner of the eye
a simple display enables the management of those aspects for which a screen is needed
One hundred and thirty examples of the Roadster will be produced
with a starting price of 3.1 million euros exclusive of local taxes
A community of extraordinarily active enthusiasts follow Pagani’s creations with the keenest interest
those customers who will actually enjoy the Utopia Roadster in real life can be seen as patrons of an art that extends far beyond their restricted community
reaching even those who dream of one day owning a Pagani Hypercar
The value of a technical and artistic creation is measured not only by the number of orders: a sculptor addresses not only his client
but also all those who will enjoy his work
an essential part of the Pagani experience has been the offer of an almost infinite number of customization possibilities
such that each customer is able to create a car that expresses his or her uniqueness
The sheer number of color and upholstery combinations available makes it impossible for two Utopia Roadsters to be identical; all customers are therefore co-creators of their own unique Hypercars
Evocations of national colors or emblems of particular collections can be combined
The possibility of leaving the carbon bare
either everywhere or only in certain places
forms part of the aesthetic options available and is a reflection of the Pagani philosophy
Technological aspects are not intended to be concealed; they are the artist’s brush
Every part of the car is made to be beautiful and efficient
inextricably intertwined from the car’s very conception
The Utopia Roadster will be officially unveiled during Monterey Car Week
an event that includes one of the world’s most famous Concours d’Elegance
the most beautiful cars in history have been honored
deeply nourishing the sensibilities and erudition of aficionados
Pagani has entrusted the Utopia with the task of reconnecting with the past
of recovering the simplicity that is often sacrificed in the name of pure performance
makes it an ally when it comes to experiencing the power of the V12
encapsulated in an elegantly styled Hypercar that openly mimics the iconic forms of the past
The designer subtly drew inspiration from both automotive and non-automotive forms
such as the delicate profiling of Vespa headlights and accessories
the styling of Italian Bianchi bicycles of the 1950s
It is the bond of deep mutual esteem and friendship between Horacio Pagani and Carlo Riva that suggested the romantic lines of the Utopia
an admiration that was born in humanity and is reflected in creativity
The Pagani Utopia Roadster is a meeting point between classicism and modernity
a novelty that continues to stand out in the increasingly crowded panorama of ultra-high-performance sports cars

unrepeatable – the Zonda Unico impresses with blue carbon fiber and manual transmission
Just when you think the Zonda has finally passed into history
The Pagani Zonda Unico is the latest tribute to a timeless icon that defies time and trends
The Pagani Zonda Unico is the latest one-off from the Unico program
which allows for complete customization of vehicles to suit the wishes of the customers
This special Zonda was inspired by the Kunlun Mountains in China and is the result of an extensive modification of the existing 760 series chassis
The body of the Pagani Zonda Unico is made of blue carbon fiber
Additional aerodynamic elements include a double rear spoiler
a central fin and a large scoop on the roof
Under the hood of the Pagani Zonda Unico is a naturally aspirated 7.3-liter V12 engine developed by AMG
The engine develops 760 horsepower (567 kW) and 780 Nm of torque
It is connected to a 6-speed manual transmission
allowing acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 2.6 seconds and reaching a top speed of over 350 km/h
Although the interior has not yet been officially revealed
it is expected to follow the Pagani tradition with the use of premium materials such as red leather
exposed carbon fiber and a wooden steering wheel
Every detail has been carefully selected and crafted with the utmost precision
The Pagani Zonda Unico may be the last example of the legendary Zonda series
Although Pagani has already introduced successors such as the Huayra and Utopia
the Zonda still impresses with its timeless design and performance
The Unico is a tribute to this heritage and proof that true art never dies
The price of this unique vehicle has not been disclosed
but it is estimated to be between $14.5 million and $18 million
For those who can afford such a masterpiece
the Zonda Unico is more than just a car – it is a work of art on four wheels

2024 — Pagani Automobili is delighted to present the new Huayra Epitome
a unique piece of work from the Grandi Complicazioni division
It is an extraordinary demonstration of Pagani’s commitment to taking Hypercars to new levels of prestige
This one-off represents the pinnacle of Pagani’s current technology available for road-legal cars
in a bespoke vehicle tailored down to the smallest detail
The project synthesizes the highest level of creative collaboration with the client
«The client came to us with clear ideas: he wanted to create a unique example that would take the Huayra to its highest expression
as the most essential embodiment of a concept
He dreamed of a car with an exclusive design that would further elevate the Huayra’s performance while maintaining its innate elegance
The creation of every Grandi Complicazioni Hypercar requires close collaboration with the customers
who become the co-creators of the object they dream of
the client shared his vision with Horacio Pagani and the team
starting a journey of listening and sharing ideas in perfect harmony to transform thoughts into concrete forms
This phase lasted nine months and led to a final conceptualization
followed by ten months of design work by an expert
It is a long and complex process because developing components dedicated to a single car requires the same time as those for series production cars
it is extremely stimulating because working with clients who have a clear vision of what they want allows us to face new challenges with passion and enthusiasm.» (Lorenzo Kerkoc

a choice that ensures the exclusivity of the car while enhancing the purity of forms and improving lighting efficiency
The rear has been completely redesigned following the requests from the client
a synthesis of Art and Science: a design that not only improves performance but also elevates aesthetics while maintaining the distinctive elegance of the Huayra
The wing supports organically develop from the side muscles of the hood
all forms give continuity to the car’s lines
designed according to the Huayra R’s studies
aims to optimally balance the car in any driving condition
A new aerodynamic cover for the rear lights has also been designed to reduce airflow resistance
extending the laminar boundary layer over the hood and giving an aggressive and unique look to the car’s rear
some technological inventions require such complex designs that they can only be manufactured in very limited quantities
The world of Haute Horlogerie calls them Grandes Complications
and Pagani Automobili pays homage to this inspiration for the division dedicated to creating ultra-limited series cars
which feature technologies so complex that only a few master craftsmen can bring to fruition
This division offers an infinite range of customizations

Welcome to Design Week
our exploration of some of the most beautiful cars on the planet
From interviews with renowned experts to investigating trends that make up the current market
we've produced five days' worth of video and written content focused exclusively on design
Signore Pagani has penned three stone-cold classics, sexy languid wedges with eyes like insects and the primal appeal of Sofia Loren. They are romantic, vaguely steampunk, totally Italian, and undeniably Pagani
Designing apex hypercars is every five-year-old’s dream—and every designer’s dream
But it’s also a mountain of responsibility when hundreds of jobs—from laborers and designers to contractors—are on the line
So when Pagani launched just the third vehicle in its decades-long history last year—the Utopia—the stakes were as high as ever
It’s a terribly interesting tension to explore
We sat down at Pagani’s Modena headquarters to discuss the topic in an exclusive
We chatted about the fineries of chasing perfection
the process of designing and realizing a car like the Utopia
[Ed's Note: This interview was translated from Italian to English in real-time by Horacio’s son, Christopher Pagani. The recorded interview tape was then translated separately by our colleagues at Motor1 Italia, and the two transcripts were combined and edited for clarity.]
"Before I talk about the Utopia, I want to give you a little background," Horacio Pagani says, leaning the elbows of his sport coat onto the glass conference table.
While one Pagani model is in production, he explained, the next one is well into its development cycle, far further along than you’d guess. The new model lives always in the ether, stuck somewhere in Pagani’s head.
"When the Zonda S came out in 2001-2002, I had already started to set up the Huayra, which came out 10 years later."
On holiday in Calabria at the turn of the century, Pagani brought along his drafting supplies, never one to stray from his work. One morning, inspiration struck.
"I didn't have a drawing table, so I drew [with the paper spread on] the floor," Pagani said. He pulls up an image of the drawing and you can still see where Signore Pagani’s hand-penciled lines were interrupted by a tile joint, mid-stroke. "There the setting started."
Pagani leaned back in his chair and spread his hands apart, glancing at a poster of the Utopia, as if to reinforce the point.
The Utopia was not designed yesterday, but conceived over years, starting life as an imaginative spark, but then labored over for years by in-house designers and engineers. Only once the first lines have been laid to paper, can the slow decade of development begin in earnest.
As such, there’s no set cadence for Pagani production. Only a sense that, when the tastes of a generation begin to change, so must Pagani Automobili. Subtle signs signal to Pagani that a new era must begin.
"There were things that made the Zonda become an iconic car. But I see the kids who come to the museum," Pagani said. "I ask them, 'What is your favorite car?' and they say, 'The Huayra,' not the Zonda."
So with the Huayra aging and new generations of devoted fans entering the Pagani museum, the time was ripe. But how do you nail cutting-edge taste (hypercars always let us glimpse of the future) in a car with a decade-long gestation?
Simultaneously, how do you build something to last? The Huayra—and especially the Zonda—accomplished both.
"It's the hardest thing, to work on things that are timeless," Pagani answered. "There are so many beautiful things around, you’re always going to find amazing things to add to your car that would look immediately beautiful. But then after some time, you will see them age very quickly, because sometimes they are too edgy, or they are too current, and they don't stay, they don't last."
Pagani listed a handful of supercars, old and new, contrasting their design qualities. He’s far more critical of his own cars than his competitors’, he notes, but his taste in the exercise skewed to cars of the 1990s and 2000s, when analog instruments filled the cabins, not a single touchscreen in sight.
"If I get into the Porsche Carrera GT, I look at the interior, I get this sensation inside that for me, nothing has aged; There is a key to start the car in a traditional way, it's just my taste."
It’s the reason you won’t find a big, gaudy central screen in the cutting-edge Utopia. Hindsight. Also time.
That’s the benefit of a decade-long timeline to build a new vehicle. Pagani is able to let an initial design age for a year or two to gauge its longevity, while mainstream automakers compress the process into half the time.
"We work on the design a lot and we let it age, right? We let it age for maybe a year or two, and then we realize if it has aged immediately or not. And then we have an extremely critical sense. That is, we do not fall in love with the work we are doing," Pagani said.
He explained that while his team feels a responsibility to the work, they must also approach it with objectivity. They must maintain a critical sense of the car at all times.
"We tend not to fall in love with our creations. This is to keep the distance between what you are designing."
The more we talked, the clearer it became; Pagani approaches his designs more like a craftsman than an artist. These cars are flights of fancy, for sure. Just look at them. But they are also, from the moment they roll off the production line, simply cars that must be sold.
"We are a small family business that has to make things that customers buy. We can't make cars just to please our ego. We have to make cars to please the customer's ego." Pagani said.
"If the Pagani customer tells you that he's not interested in a hybrid vacuum, even if it has 1,200 horsepower or 1,000 horsepower, you have to listen to him. He has really refused the hybrid car. You have to try to please him. If he says he wants a naturally aspirated or turbo V-12, you have to try to go in that direction."
'We tend not to fall in love with our creations. This is to keep the distance between what you are designing.'
At the end of the day, Pagani said, his customers are the focus. They ultimately judge Horacio Pagani’s success as a designer and Pagani Automobili as an automaker. They provide direction and clarity.
To that end, you’d consider the Utopia an immediate success. Automobili Pagani’s track record ensures its cars are sold out for the better part of the next decade, with customers purchasing vehicles that haven’t even been unveiled, or perhaps even designed.
That faith allows for a long roadmap, a plan adaptable to ever-shifting legislation and consumer taste. Customers believe Pagani will deliver, no matter what, and they’ve put money on it.
A rarely seen room at Pagani HQ, where cars are customized
"In December 2023, we made the organizational chart with the team of people who will work on our new projects until 2032," Pagani said. "If we look at other brands, they are moving to make SUVs, to make electric cars, to make hybrid cars, et cetera."
Pagani doesn’t chase that nonsense. Even Ferrari builds an SUV now, and many hybrids, but Horacio Pagani knows it’s not what his customers want.
"The market responds to you the moment it buys something. I mean, if you make a magazine, you don't ask the consumer if it’s a good magazine… When you have managed to sell all the magazines, it means you have made the right product."
As with the other times I’ve interviewed Horacio Pagani, he’s key to point to Pagani’s continued investments in vertical manufacturing, product development, and especially the training and retention of employees.
You’ll never find a set of happier workers in the company cantina. The Utopia’s design may have started with a spark, but ultimately, a team of bright minds and capable hands moved the car from idea to reality, Pagani said.
"At the end of the day there's nothing left to do but invest in people, ensuring that education always grows, the know-how and the possibilities to create extraordinary things in the future. But it has to come from within."

Carpincho is of course, Spanish for capybara, and this Zonda capybara was commissioned by “renowned car collector and enthusiast” Jorge Gomez. He worked with Arbiza for three years creating this homage to both the wonderful V12 Zonda, Lionel Messi and small, pocket-sized circular currency.
It features over 100,000 Uruguayan coins, half a million soldering points and a portrait of the Argentinian footballist on the bonnet, the latter “reflecting Gomez’s deep connection to soccer and his Argentine heritage”. We're also told it weighs the same as the regular, really-very-V12-powered Pagani Zonda. That means it clocks in at around 1,250kg.
Every Pagani Zonda is special
but with the possible exception of the limited-run Cinque
there’s not a single Zonda as desirable as the Tricolore
and one of them is now up for auction with the potential to smash records
Pagani built the Zonda Tricolore to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Italian Air Force’s aerobatic demonstration team
The bodywork is made from the most incredible blue-tinted carbon fiber and contrasted with some carbon fiber accents
and pinstripes in the colors of the Italian flag

The special Zonda offered by RM Sotheby’s is number 2 of the 3 built and is currently registered in Germany
It’s only been driven 1,112 km (691 miles) and looks just as good now as it did when it was brand new
We think Pagani’s first supercar has aged the most gracefully and continues to look like a rolling piece of art
The interior features blue and white leather on the seats while there are plenty of carbon fiber and aluminum accents also found throughout
the Tricolore has a Mercedes-AMG 7.3-liter naturally-aspirated V12 with 670 hp and 575 lb-ft (780 Nm) of torque
This engine is coupled to a 6-speed automated manual transmission
although RM says the winner bidder can return the car to Pagani and have it converted to a 6-speed manual
the car weighs just 1,210 kg (2,667 lbs) and can run to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.4 seconds before hitting 200 km/h (124 mph) in 9.6 seconds
In November, the one-off Zonda LM Roadster sold for $11.08 million at a public auction
This Tricolore could fetch even more than that
Over the past couple of years, the Art Basel event in Miami has become an increasingly important event on the automotive calendar, providing high-end brands with the opportunity to showcase their latest creations to the rich few who can afford them. As the event’s name suggests, there are plenty of art pieces on display, and this special Pagani Zonda-inspired creation might have been the finest piece at this year’s show
This remarkable creation is the work of Uruguayan artist Joaquin Arbiza and is a full-scale replica of a Pagani Zonda F made entirely from Uruguayan pesos
longer than it takes Pagani to build one of its beloved V12-powered hypercars
Every single part of a real Zonda has been replicated and formed out of the golden coins
there are more than 100,000 coins and half a million weld points
Several of the coins up front have been painted black and arranged to create a portrait of Lionel Messi
the artist and the owner of this special one-off are big fans of the legendary Argentinian footballer
Many of the coins have had to be bent to mimic some of the Zonda’s curves and design elements
and even the wheels and tires are formed from the coins
The unique creation weighs around 1,250 kg (2,755 lbs)
Obviously, the actual jewel of a normal Zonda is missing: its 7.3-liter naturally-aspirated V12, but that’s neither here nor there. Plenty of Paganis sit untouched in garages around the world, slowly rotting away. As this one has no engine, it can be used as a showpiece without letting the powertrain go to waste.

Pagani only ever built 100 examples of the standard Huayra Coupe
but some of them are more special than others
it was ordered by a Californian and has now hit the market
It’s a 2014 model that’s been driven just ~2,000 miles (~3,200 km)
and it’s already attracting plenty of attention
The distinctive colorway of the car was inspired by the Pacific Ocean – hence its name
Most of the bodywork is painted in Blu Francia Metallic
while there are Biano Fabriano white accents on the rocker panels and rear fascia
There are plenty of exposed Blu Tricolore pieces of carbon fiber

Not long after the car was delivered to the original owner in California, it was sent back to Pagani’s factory and equipped with the optional Tempesta package that includes a titanium exhaust
but a set of 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels painted in gold will also be included in the sale
It’s not just the Italian supercar’s exterior that’s bold
The cabin sports an eye-popping combination of Ocra leather with Blu Ossido Alcantara accents on parts of the seats
there’s also plenty of Blu Tricolore carbon fiber throughout
including on the steering wheel and gauge cluster
A set of quilted floor mats adds to the luxurious feel
It also features a custom ‘Oceano Pacifico 1 di 1’ plaque on the dashboard
Like all other standard Huayra models
the supercar rocks an AMG-sourced 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12 mated to a seven-speed automatic manual transaxle
This engine is good for 730 hp at 5,800 rpm and 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque
monumental figures for a car that weighs roughly 2,976 lbs (1,350 kg)
If you happen to have a couple of million dollars burning a hole in your pocket, you can head over to Bring a Trailer and place a bid
we’ve come to expect eye-watering price tags for a car brand’s finest creations
a car isn’t work looking at unless its surpassing that 1,000 horsepower mark
nor if it doesn’t cost over $1,000,000 in its SE or base spec configuration (we’re still waiting for a hypercar to come with plastic wheel trims and manual windows
and Pagani have a way of rewriting that illusive rulebook with every new ‘final’ edition they produce
This weekend, we saw one of the Italian brand’s finest creations make history, where the one and only Pagani Zonda 760 LM Roadster sailed under RM Sotheby's hammer ahead of an excited room and was eventually snapped up for a staggering $11,036,250
The "One-Off" concept and the special series
which today is better known as the Grandi Complicazioni series and showcases the Zonda Tricolore
This trio represent the pinnacle of the product range for Pagani and are a result of state-of-the-art knowledge
the 760 LM is directly inspired by the heritage of motorsport
The client asked Pagani to create a new Zonda model inspired by the Le Mans sport prototypes
The result isn’t simply a fresh bodykit on an existing Zonda
but instead it required a dedicated aerodynamic study due to the uniqueness of the shapes in order to optimise the vehicle’s extreme performance
Under the giant rear clam sits a 7.3-litre naturally aspirated V-12 engine
mated to a seven-speed sequential gearbox and a plethora of dynamic innovations built specifically for this car only
As the original Pagani Zonda is due to reach its 26th birthday in 2025
it is truly incredible to see the desirability and admiration for the marque and model is still just as high as it was back in 1999
RM Sotheby's Director of Sales Oliver Camelin had this to say about the Zonda
"It’s truly an honor for us to have had the chance to sell this amazing car
one of Horacio Pagani‘s masterpieces during our Dubai sale. This result being a worldwide record for a road car produced in the 21st century at auction also shows that time are changing and that modern hypercars are entering the realm of true greats as well in terms of value as in appreciation from collectors." but either output sounds a bit weedy in a 2025 context
It’s thought that only five of these original-spec cars were built
one of which was sacrificed for crash testing
Pagani Zonda C12 S See alsoAbt Unveils Audi Quattro Restomod With 523bhp At the following year’s Geneva Show
an updated version of the Zonda was presented
The C12’s original 6.0-litre engine was to 7.0 litres to create the C12 S
A further 15 examples of these were produced
the Zonda received another capacity increase
an open-top Roadster version was introduced
Production figures were 18 coupes and 12 Roadsters
the biggest update yet for the Zonda arrived: the F
the legendary Argentinean F1 driver of the 1950s who was also a close friend to Horacio Pagani
as well as a recalibrated ECU to take power to 594bhp
The suspension and chassis were reworked too
magnesium alloy wishbones and optional carbon ceramic brakes
An optional Club Sport package saw the fitment of hotter-still cams and intakes and a stunning Inconel exhaust system
all of which lifted power even more to 641bhp
featuring the same mechanical spec as the Club Sport
This is where the ‘this is the last ever Zonda
the Zonda Cinque – Italian for ‘five’ – was a response to a request from Pagani’s official Hong Kong importer for “the most extreme road-legal Zonda ever created.”
and the six-speed manual gearbox found in earlier Zondas was swapped for a semi-auto paddleshift unit
only five of each body style were produced
this one’s rather cool: the 2010 Zonda Tricolore was a tribute to the Frecce Tricolori (literally ‘Tri-Colour Arrows’)
the Italian equivalent of the Red Arrows aerobatic display team
Its mechanical spec is largely the same as the Cinque
and though originally intended to be a one-off
It’d be another seven years before we got another Zonda that wasn’t a one-off
Essentially Horacio Pagani’s 60th birthday present to himself
2017’s Zonda HP Barchetta featured a bonkers roofless speedster-style body
with power from the 7.3-litre AMG V12 lifted even further to 789bhp – nearly twice what the original 6.0-litre car was making
and it was the last of the Zondas not to be a one-off
Throughout the Zonda’s impressive production run
either for competitive racing or as the ultra-wealthy’s equivalent of a half-caged MX-5 track car
Not among them was the Zonda LM Race Car featured in Gran Turismo 4 – that was a fictional version designed just for the game
the GR was the result of a collaboration between various figures in European and North American motorsport who wanted to take the Zonda racing
the GR was primarily raced in the American Le Mans Series
and though it did enter the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2003
a gearbox issue removed it from the running after just 10 laps

A one-off track-only version of the C12 S developed for a North American client in 2004
the Zonda Monza was essentially a C12 S with any concessions to road usability done away with
Solid suspension bushes replaced the standard rubber items
and adjustable dampers and anti-roll bars were fitted
dry sump lubrication system and unsilenced exhaust
Pagani Zonda R Shown off at the 2007 Geneva Show
the Zonda R was one of the first generation of mega-money hypercars that weren’t road legal but couldn’t be raced either
A 6.0-litre racing version of the Mercedes-AMG V12 produced 740bhp
while full carbon bodywork hosted the most aggressive aero yet seen on a Zonda
it was the outright production-based lap record holder at the Nürburgring
A one-off updated version of the R unveiled in 2012
the Evolution featured slightly more power – 750bhp – and more aggressive aero
The sole example was eventually developed into
Pagani Zonda Revolución Another updated R
2013’s Zonda Revolución featured a further power increase to 789bhp
and tweaks to systems like the traction control and ABS
one of the 15 original Zonda Rs was later treated to the same suite of upgrades as the Revolución
Pagani Zonda Arrivederci Especially in the later part of its life
the Zonda became notorious for wild customer one-offs popping up every now and then
many of which were converted from original production Zondas
benefiting from a further upgrade to the 7.3-litre engine that takes power up to 750bhp
Over 35 one-off Zondas have been produced, two of which arrived as recently as 2024, 25 years after the original car debuted. Those included the Arrivederci
bearing a name that suggests it might finally
the server space to detail every single one-off
we’ve listed all the ones we know about below as a springboard for you to get lost in your own rabbit hole of uber-exclusive Italian hypercars
Next This Toyota Corolla Proves White Wheels Are Just Cooler Mike Bartholomew The first full sentence spoken by an infant Mike was a review of the ride quality of a Volvo 850
It was “Daddy’s car goes bumpy-bump on a bumpy road,” so would probably need proofreading a bit
Not everyone can design a successful supercar
but just take a look at all of the companies that thought they had what it takes and yet folded before their fledgling models could gain a foothold
but many of us have forgotten the names: Ascari
All of those companies and more came and went while the Pagani Zonda was in production
Even within Pagani’s stable of highly customized
Just two of these Le Mans-inspired Zondas were built
Its build was commissioned by the original buyer
who wanted to see some Le Mans sport prototype DNA in a road car
Pagani developed 60 unique components for the LM cars
Molds of those unique pieces are still housed in Pagani’s workshop in case replacement parts are needed
Those bespoke parts and panels aren’t just there to stand out from the supercar crowd—they also had to deliver improved performance
The six-month development of the two cars included an aerodynamic study and testing on both road and track
This special roadster is powered by the 750-hp 7.3-liter AMG V-12 from the Zonda’s 760 series and is paired with a seven-speed sequential transmission
the powertrain had just 9,604 kilometers showing on the odometer
with factory maintenance records to back it up
The previous auction record for a Pagani was the 2019 sale of a 2017 Zonda Aether
the Aether was equipped with a six-speed manual transmission and brought $6,812,500
We asked our valuation specialists to see whether this latest price was a standout
“not a big surprise for a Zonda based on private market activity.”
Pagani’s willingness to invest significant time and effort in creating one-off models of already exquisite supercars seems to be paying off for the brand and its customers
with high-profile sales like this only adding to the prestige
Don’t expect this Zonda auction record to last
If you want to make up words Brendan (“transacted”)
You’re a fine writer; there’s no need for you to chase the word creation trend
The authors name is Brandan… Now something about glass houses and stones
Several dictionaries I checked says that “transacted” is a verb; meaning the past tense of “transact”
All you retired english teachers dialed up the wrong Forum
And here I was thinking it’d be too much nitpicking that “Devin” (kit cars from the 50s?) should be “Devon” (The Devon GTX
A crazy price to be sure but a unique car like that going for this kind of money isn’t too unusual
I always think of this as jotting off a quick note
I’ll spend considerably more time crossing every T and dotting every I in a business proposal
