“He spent 25 years kneeling on concrete floors to speak to death row inmates through the food flaps of their cells Susan explains why inmate Giovanni felt the need to run over and help her husband Dale down the stairs Giovanni is one of the ceramicists at Paliano detention centre and a wonderful team of two who have dedicated their lives to supporting prisoners on death row and their families Dale is now a lay chaplain and spiritual advisor to inmates awaiting execution in Florida Paliano is like no other detention centre in the country As Vatican News learned on a recent tour of the facility with Dale Recinella it's like no other detention centre in the world a pizza oven and a soon-to-be-inaugurated library This prison is what all prisons should look like “It is living proof that rehabilitation exists Dale assists prisoners throughout their years on death row He says the mentality is the US is: “Well if we ain’t gonna kill ‘em then what are we gonna do with ‘em?” Capital punishment was abolished in Italy in 1994 and although some of the inmates at Paliano detention centre have committed heinous crimes their first step towards redemption comes from the peculiarity that they are all what are known as “collaborators of justice” (from the Italian collaboratori di giustizia): all ex-mafiosi who have turned to justice and who now give information in exchange for small benefits also known as “repentants” (from the Italian pentiti) are separated from the rest of the prisoners Brother Dale says that the equivalent in the US is “high-security” and with the mafia being mainly family organisations it is often their families that they have “betrayed” both from society and from their difficult past But repentance is the first step to recreating a relationship with your conscience and with God The final part of the tour took place in a small room where the inmates have their Christmas dinners Here Brother Dale stood up and addressed around 30 men and 2 women detainees "I am here because after seeing the horror of death in my country He tells the inmates he can't wait to go back to the US to be able to reply to those who ask “well if we ain’t gonna kill ‘em then what are we gonna do with ‘em?” "I'm going to tell them about you" "Coming here has served me more than it has you" “When I first started as a spiritual advisor in 1998 the inmates would make fun of me as I walked down the corridor,” he said and imitated them: “‘Didn’t the Catholic Church have anything better to do with you?’” After finding out about Dale’s history as a finance lawyer one of them laughed and exclaimed: “Well that’s good news The greedy finance lawyer or the 18-year-old who when drunk and high tried to rob a grocery store and who in the panic accidentally fired a shot and killed someone?” The first murmurs of agreement came from the otherwise silent inmates listening to Dale speak Then silence fell again as he described Florida’s death row which is located on the border with the state of Georgia Brother Dale travels to this remote place “suitable only for alligators and not for humans” even when the temperatures rocket “There’s no air conditioning on death row” the mentality is: “they’re going to die anyway so why should we spend money on them?” The place described by the American chaplain is a circle of hell The cells are two metres wide and three metres deep In one corner there is a toilet and a steel shelf serving as a bed if they try and hide anything underneath it Brother Dale then told the chilling story of Ángel’s botched execution in 2006 Tears came to his eyes as he recalled Ángel’s 29 minutes of hell because that’s what Dale had told him to do “The witness room is full of people who want to see them killed” The defendant is only allowed two people in the witness room: their lawyer and their spiritual advisor “The lawyers are usually in their offices trying I always sit in the same place: front right and I tell them that’s where they should look over 189 people have been saved from unjust execution at the very last minute “A few of them already had the needles in their arms How many have we missed?” asked Brother Dale “How long are people kept on death row before they are executed?” someone asked “Are the states in which capital punishment is still legal more democrat or republican?” “How does a death row inmate feel?” These were some of the questions the inmates asked The last question was not a question at all: “You said your visit here has been more useful to you than to us because you can go back to the US and tell them about us I don’t think we will be complaining about what we don’t have anymore I think I can speak for all of us when I say that we have realised just how privileged we are It didn’t take long for everyone to be up on their feet clapping and thanking brother Dale who hugged his wife who so clearly understands and shares all of his pain Thank you for reading our article. Francis travelled to the Paliano detention center to celebrate the Holy Thursday Mass at the only Italian prison dedicated to housing mafia turncoats These "collaborators of justice" can shave time off their sentences by cooperating with anti-mafia prosecutors many of the inmates are serving lengthy terms: Two of the 12 who participated in the foot-washing ceremony are serving life terms The remaining 10 are due to be released between 2019 and 2073 Francis also visited two other inmates currently in solitary confinement Francis reminded the inmates that his gesture of washing their feet re-enacted the revolutionary gesture of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples before he was crucified essentially doing the work of a slave out of love do it," Francis urged them during his homily This is like washing feet: to be the servant of others." It's the third Holy Thursday that Francis has spent at a detention center part of his long-standing emphasis on ministering to prisoners and the need to give them rehabilitation and hope "The Holy Father gave us (a) message not just of hope but he told us that the love of God is great and is ready to forgive everyone," prison director Nadia Cersosimo told Vatican Radio Francis' visit was conducted under unusually strict privacy: Vatican Radio only aired edited excerpts of his homily after the fact and the Vatican's television service planned edited TV footage Usually the pope's activities are covered live by at least Vatican TV and radio The prison also houses four women and has a special ward for tuberculosis-infected inmates The Vatican said three of the 12 inmates who had their feet washed are women and one is a Muslim who is due to be baptized a Christian in June Prisoners prepared cakes as gifts and offered the pope zucchini and cucumbers from the prison's organic garden In an interview published in Rome daily La Repubblica Francis said his emphasis on reaching out to inmates comes from his heart I ask myself: 'Why him and not me?'?" he said "?'Why did he fall and not me?' It's a mystery that brings me closer to them." Francis opened the most solemn period of the Catholic Church's liturgical calendar by celebrating Mass on Thursday morning in St Peter's Basilica before heading to Paliano he participated in the torch-lit procession at Rome's Colosseum re-enacting Christ's crucifixion a Catholic lay chaplain for Florida's death row for the Catholic Bishops in Florida recently spent a day visiting Paliano detention centre in Italy all ex-mafiosi and now collaborators of justice Many of these inmates have committed terrible crimes but with the luck of living in a country where capital punishment has been abolished and where rehabilitative prisons such as Paliano exist they are now on the road towards redemption It is difficult to understand how a country like the United States considered the country of justice and freedom Dale Recinella explains that both history and religion play a role in this 93% of the executions in the United States in the last fourty years or so have taken place in the old Confederacy “It is a remnant of slavery and that's why it is so racially biased,” he said Brother Dale explained that the death penalty and the executions in the United States are overwhelmingly racially-biased against African-Americans as an example he says that “where only 12% of the population Is African American 36% of the people on death row are African-American.” there is a tremendous misunderstanding of scripture that permeates the Old South In that same way now the death penalty is being justified by a misreading of scripture “The death penalty in the United States cannot possibly be justified with the scriptures as they really are written Dale Recinella addressed numerous detainees at Paliano detention centre during his visit and he thanked them telling them his visit there had been more beneficial to him than to them is because of “the relief I feel knowing I'm not in a place where I'm going to get a call that somebody I care about has had their warrant signed and that I'm going to be going from here to death row.” as soon as his plane had landed back at JFK airport on 12th June 2019 his phone rang and it was the warden telling him a man’s warrant had been signed the night before and he had asked for Dale as his spiritual advisor.” “as soon as I land in the states I'm always watching my phone to make sure that somebody I really care about hasn't been scheduled to be killed.” There is a debate in Italy about whether life sentence in prison can be considered a death penalty itself with some saying it is actually worse than the death penalty our own Pope Francis considers life imprisonment to be a "secret death penalty" is that “every guy I know on death row and every woman I know on death row who is sitting there under a Sword of Damocles waiting to find out they're going to be the next one to be killed by the state would gladly take a life in prison sentence without possibility of parole.” Dale explained that he has to work within the context of his country not in the broader context of what is morally and theologically right because unfortunately “we are not there yet” “we are going to have a much harder time getting rid of the death penalty” and only then “will I be ready to deal with life in prison.” our hope is not based on politics or on human beings,” because sometimes even human beings who are trying to do the right thing still disappoint us “Our hope is based on who Jesus Christ is and what he said he would do I believe we will see the end of this horrible barbaric practice.” The convicts for the murder of the 21-year-old cook are preparing for an appeal when the news of the killing of Willy Monteiro Duarte began to circulate on social networks and disturbing the minds of people for the ways in which the 21-year-old from Paliano had been killed a few hours earlier in Colleferro A story that shook the whole country still hurt Two years have passed and the memory of the young chef is still imprinted even in those who have learned to know him only through a smiling photograph announced for today a mass in memory of him at the Collegiate Church of Sant'Andrea "Two years have passed since that tragic night that tore you from your family those who loved you - writes Alfieri on social media - We will remember you without any excess or fuss with the sobriety that has always distinguished you and your wonderful family in your brief passage on this world you have taught us many things: love for life the awareness that each of us must never give up in the face of violence and prevarication ” had just finished work and went out with friends to spend a few hours in the center of Colleferro a laugh with the group of young people in front of the “Due di Picche” pub and then Willy sees a former school friend of his verbally arguing with a couple of people He approaches to ask if everything is okay and He does not know that Mario Pincarelli and Francesco Belleggia are involved in the quarrel with his friend close to the brothers Marco and Gabriele Bianchi sadly known throughout the district for their aptitude to hit and assert their supremacy thanks to the knowledge of MMA fighting techniques During the quarrel with Willy's former schoolmate a mutual friend had called the Bianchi brothers fearing for the fate of Belleggia and Pincarelli the Whites find themselves in front of the nightlife of Colleferro and - according to the reconstruction made by the police investigators who intervened after the events - they beat the first person in front of them: the unfortunate Willy Monteiro Duarte kicks delivered to the head "as if it were a penalty kick" A treatment that left no escape for the 21-year-old who would have escaped the attack if he hadn't stopped to make sure of his friend's condition Also according to the reconstruction of the investigators the attackers in turn attacked Willy's body there remains the void left by Willy in Paliano but also four heavy sentences handed down in the Assize Court in Frosinone: life imprisonment for Marco and Gabriele Bianchi The judge recognized all four of them for voluntary homicide The defense teams of all four defendants have announced the appeal as soon as they read the reasons for the sentence which is expected to be published in October All are aiming to unhinge the accusation of voluntary homicide For the 4th time in his 5-year pontificate Pope has chosen a prison for the Holy Thursday liturgy.  This year the Holy Father will go to Rome’s best known prison where he will celebrate the Mass of the Last Supper It will include the washing of the feet of 12 inmates in commemoration of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples.  he will also visit the sick inmates in the infirmary and meet some of the prisoners of the 8th Section.  the Pope has celebrated the Holy Thursday liturgy not in a Rome basilica but in detention centres or old and sick people’s homes The first  Holy Thursday Mass of Pope Francis in a prison was soon after his election on March 13 when he visited the juvenile prison of Casal del Marmo.  In 2015 he celebrated it at Rome’s Rebibia prison and last year he made it to Frosinone’s Paliano prison Pope Francis visited Rome’s “Don Gnocchi” center for the elderly and disabled he visited the centre for asylum seekers at Castelnuovo di Porto some 24 kilometers from north of Rome.  Holy Thursday is part of the Easter Triduum or the final 3 days during the Holy Week that culminates into Easter Pope Francis has chosen to wash the feet of also women and non-Christians Notifications can be managed in browser preferences. Read our Privacy notice The prime minister of Italy has joined hundreds of mourners at the funeral for a young black man whose death in a violent street attack has shocked the country. Willy Monteiro Duarte, 21, died after being kicked and punched when he tried to help a friend being attacked in the town of Colleferro on the outskirts of Rome, according to local news reports. Four Italian men have been arrested but prosecutors have not yet indicated whether there was any racial motive for the attack on 6 September. Premier Giuseppe Conte said earlier this week that the tragic death of Mr Duarte, who was born in Rome to parents from the African island nation of Cape Verde, had “struck me deeply”. "It left me shocked," he added. "A boy who had recently crossed the threshold of 20 years, was studying and working, fully lived his passions, his emotions. He cultivated his dreams and was probably exposed to the many uncertainties that worry young people intent on building their own future in personal and professional life. "Suddenly, a deaf and unmotivated violence came upon him." The prime minister added that "justice will certainly run its course... we trust that certain and severe sentences will soon be reached." He attended the funeral on Saturday with interior minister Luciana Lamorgese along with a crowd of mourners wearing white shirts and face masks. Many clapped in respect as Mr Duarte's casket was carried out. "We must look ourselves in the eye and become fully aware that there are some pockets of society and fringes of the population that cultivate the mythology of violence and oppression," Conte told the crowd after the funeral on Saturday. He then embraced Mr Duarte's mother and father, Lucia and Armando, and his sister, Milena, and said, "Italy is with you, it loves you." The prime minister later posted a picture on Facebook of white balloons released at the funeral, adding: "To Willy we have addressed today the moving thoughts of an entire country. In Paliano, the entire community clearly stated that there is no violence capable of overwhelming the example of a generous life." Italy's World Cup winner Bruno Conti, now the head of youth football at Serie A football team AS Roma also attended the funeral, along with young players from the academy, to pay his respects to Mr Duarte, who had dreamed of playing for the team. The club has announced it will dedicate its school anti-bullying programme, 'A Scuola di Tifo', to his memory throughout the 2020-21 season.
