The message — indeed devilish — describes God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit as "dead weights," the researcher said
has for centuries defied every attempt at understanding its meaning
you cannot ignore the psychological profile of the writer
We needed to know as much as possible about this nun," Ludum Director Daniele Abate told Live Science
born Isabella Tomasi (she was an ancestor of Italian writer Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa)
entered the Benedictine convent when she was only 15 years old
"The letter appeared as if it was written in shorthand
We speculated that Sister Maria created a new vocabulary using ancient alphabets that she may have known," Abate said
the researches first tested the software they used with some standard shorthand symbols from different languages
They found that the nun's letter contained a mix of words from ancient alphabets such as Greek

"We analyzed how the syllables and graphisms [or thoughts depicted as symbols] repeated in the letter in order to locate vowels
and we ended up with a refined decryption algorithm," Abate said
He said the team did not have great expectations for the outcome
"We thought we could just come out with a few words making sense
But the nun had a good command of languages," he said
adding "the message was more complete than expected."
Rambling in nature and not entirely understandable
in addition to calling the Holy Trinity "dead weights," goes on to say that "God thinks he can free mortals ..
Styx is the river separating the netherworld from the world of the living
Abete said the letter suggests that Sister Maria suffered from schizophrenia or bipolar disorder
"The image of the devil is often present in these disorders
We learned from historical records that every night she screamed and fought against the devil," Abate said
For the church of that time, the letter was instead considered the outcome of her struggle against "innumerable evil spirits," according to a written account about the occurrence by Abbess Maria Serafica
According to Serafica's account of the nun's behavior written shortly after the incident
the devil would have forced Sister Maria (who was later blessed) to sign the letter
She heroically opposed the demand by writing
which is the only comprehensible word in the letter
The research has not been published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal

a 31-year-old nun named Sister Maria Crocifissa della Concezione penned a letter “from the devil” as she struggled with an alleged demonic possession in Palma di Montechiaro
Sister Maria was found that day lying on the floor of her cell
and there was a letter nearby containing 14 lines written in an unknown language
The nun claimed that the letter had been written by the devil
who’d tried to convince her to abandon God
Though the letter was written using strange symbols
researchers took a crack at deciphering it in 2017
They used modern-day software to study the 341-year-old letter and were able to untangle its meaning

the research team theorized that Sister Maria had created the foreign script based on actual languages that she knew
they found that her letter contained words from ancient Greek
“We analyzed how the syllables and graphisms [or thoughts depicted as symbols] repeated in the letter in order to locate vowels
and we ended up with a refined decryption algorithm,” Daniele Abate
Abate’s team found that Sister Maria’s jumble of ancient symbols did include coherent messages
One passage read: “God thinks he can free mortals… The system works for no one… Perhaps now
Styx [the river that separates the dead and the living] is certain.” Another passage referred to the Holy Trinity “dead weights.”

Sister Maria Crocifissa della Concezione of the Monastery of Palma di Montechiaro awoke
She claimed she had been possessed by Satan
who forced her to write a message in letters
The letter was written in a jumbled archaic alphabet
the monastery offered a month-long vacation to anyone who successfully translated the message
it seems like software has achieved what humans could not
Daniele Abate, director of the Ludum Science Center, told the Times:
which we believe is used by intelligence services for codebreaking
and Latin to de-scramble some of the letter and show that it really is devilish
The letter continues to try to convince the nun to abandon her faith and that religion is the invention of man
Abate told Italian news Radio 105:
My theory is that this is a precise alphabet
invented by the nun with great care by mixing symbols she knew
Each symbol is well thought out and structured
perhaps an intentional and perhaps unconscious initiative
The stress of life in the monastery was very strong

A devilish letter written by a 17th century nun has been translated
Sister Maria Crocifissa della Concezione, a 31-year-old nun living at the convent of Palma di Montechiaro in Sicily
was said to be possessed when she wrote the letter
she was found on the floor of her cell with her face covered in ink
clutching a letter which was a strange mix of symbols and letters
Historical accounts have suggest that Sister Maria claimed this was a letter from the devil, who was attempting to turn her away from God and towards evil
and archaeologists have tried to decipher the meaning for centuries
and finally have started to make improvements
Talking to Live Science
Ludum Director Daniele Abate said: “When working on historical decryption
“We needed to know as much as possible about this nun.”
Historians have said that Sister Maria was just 15 when she decided to devote her life to God
Abate continued: “The letter appeared as if it was written in shorthand
“We speculated that Sister Maria created a new vocabulary using ancient alphabets that she may have known.”
To be sure about what exactly this letter was written in
researchers used software which scanned shorthand symbols from different languages
They found that the nun’s letter contained words from ancient alphabets such as Greek
Abate said: “We analyzed how the syllables and graphisms [or thoughts depicted as symbols] repeated in the letter in order to locate vowels
and we ended up with a refined decryption algorithm
“We thought we could just come out with a few words making sense
But the nun had a good command of languages
The message was more complete than expected."
In addition to calling the Holy Trinity ‘dead weights’
the letter also said: “God thinks he can free mortals
Abate says the letter shows strong indications that Sister Maria was suffering from mental health conditions
He said: “The image of the devil is often present in these disorders
“We learned from historical records that every night she screamed and fought against the devil.”

There is a legend that dates back to the 17th century
about an Italian nun who claimed to have written a number of letters during an episode of demonic possession
believed that the Devil himself wrote the letters while attempting to steal her from God
Only one of Sister Maria’s letters has survived
Nobody at the time could translate the 14 lines of writing because it was apparently written in unknown language
and occultists joined forces to decipher it with a code-breaking software found on the Dark Web
The Dark Web is that place on the Internet where you find anything and everything that might otherwise be forbidden
But there are also brilliant applications that can be used for productive aims such as deciphering a 17th-century letter
director of the Ludum science museum in the Metropolitan City of Catania
told The Times of London that thanks to an intelligence-grade code-breaking system they could finally learn the meaning of the mysterious jumble of archaic script
the Runic alphabet and Latin to descramble some of the letter and show that it really is devilish,” said Abate
“The letter appeared as if it was written in shorthand
We speculated that Sister Maria created a new vocabulary using ancient alphabets that she may have known
We analyzed how the syllables and graphisms [thoughts depicted as symbols] repeated in the letter in order to locate vowels and we ended up with a refined decryption algorithm.”
Sister Maria had joined the Benedictine convent when she was 15
She was well known and liked by the other sisters and the abbess
one August day in 1676 when Sister Maria was 31 years old
she was found on the floor of her quarters
her face covered in ink and the letters clutched in her hands
the nun claimed that she was possessed by Satan
who made her sign the letters but she resisted and wrote only “Ohimé” (oh me)
And although the letter has recently sparked people’s curiosity worldwide
the research team at Ludum science museum hasn’t released the complete text yet
saying that it speaks of the nature of God’s relationship with man
They have confirmed that the letter says: “God thinks he can free mortals … this system works for no one.” It also speaks about God and Zoroaster as inventions of the people; of the River Styx
the River Styx separates the world of the living from that of the dead
who took the souls to the Underworld where they waited to be born again
Charon was happy to do his job if the dead paid the fee to cross the river
their family buried them with coins laid on their eyes so that the soul of their beloved ones would safely cross Styx
Abate did try to discover more logical explanations about the nature of the letter
Sister Maria was intelligent and well educated
but she probably suffered from schizophrenia or bipolar disorder
The mishmash of languages she used to write the letter were ones that she is likely to have learned during her time in the convent
As for her claims that voices spoke to her and told her what to do (write the letters)
this supports Abate’s theory that the nun suffered from a form of schizophrenia
