Tourists flock to Lake Garda in summer for the laidback lakeside lifestyle
But there are several regulations visitors should be aware of to avoid costly fines
local media reported that hundreds of people were slapped with fines for disrespectful behavior
From ball games on the beach to wearing swimming costumes around town
Sirmione is one of the most visited places on the lake
thanks to its flower-adorned town center and thermal water
But be careful how you access the historic center
Both cars and bicycles are banned from the area
The only exception is for residents and hotel guests
Taking a dip without a swimsuit is a bad idea at Lake Garda
Authorities have also prohibited football and other games that involve running or “throwing objects.”
Fines for transgressors range between €100 ($110) and €600 ($660)
The town of Limone has become so frustrated by tourists stringing their wet clothes across balconies that they’ve imposed some rules
Laundry must not be strung outside windows
on balconies or on terraces in the old town
Those who break the rules face penalties of up to €500 ($550)
The locality of Torri del Benaco takes this rule one step further and prohibits dogs in the water if other bathers are nearby
Don’t think you can just wander around in beach attire
Men are forbidden to go around without a shirt on
while women cannot be dressed only in swimming costumes
If you’re thinking of throwing a party along the shores of Lake Garda
graduation celebrations and bachelor or bachelorette parties are banned
you face a fine between €50 ($55) and €500 ($550) and any party-related “objects” may be confiscated

Here’s your ultimate adventure planner for northern Italy
An extreme mountain bike trek in the Dolomites is one of many adventures travelers find in northern Italy
If your trip style leans more to the rugged and remote
well-traveled Italy might not be your first choice
But the Dolomites region in the country’s north surprises with an adrenalized beauty even the most adventurous travelers crave
Here’s an action-packed itinerary for the region—reported by a seasoned adventure traveler—that takes in the towering Dolomites, the hills of Valdobbiadene, artful Venice
all while sampling prosecco and meeting some of northern Italy’s most dedicated craftspeople
The 75-mile Alta Via 1 is among the most popular hiking trails in the Dolomites
The stretch around the Passo Falzarego (nearly 7,000 feet in elevation) is a thrilling walking path
My focus is on climbing a thousand feet straight up on Ra Bujela
a via ferrata that starts near the top of the women’s World Cup downhill run at Cortina
or “iron paths,” are climbing routes that World War I soldiers built by pounding iron-runged stairs into the rock in order to climb otherwise impassable peaks
The historical routes are so popular with recreational climbers that ski resorts and mountaineering associations across the Dolomites continue to build new ones
Related: See stunning photos of hikers on via ferratas in the Dolomites.
I’m with Carlo Cosi, a professional mountaineering guide originally from Padua. He’s climbed all over the world, earning a nomination for the Piolets d’Or
But it’s the Dolomites that Cosi loves best
My group of three is roped together as an extra safety measure
in addition to being connected individually via two carabiners that fasten our harnesses to the cable route
We climb the first pitch straight up a vertical wall to a narrow footbridge suspended between two pinnacles
The reliable footholds and ever present cable give rusty climbers like me an opportunity to once again feel the exhilaration of summiting otherwise unreachable heights
“The nice thing about the Dolomites,” Cosi says

The town of Peschiera del Garda sits on the southern tip where the lake flows into the Mincio River
in the twentieth canto of the Inferno describes how the emissary waters of Garda
starting to flow towards the Po through green pastures
give rise to the Mincio. Peschiera del Garda it is portrayed as a beautiful and solid fortress
We visited it passing the magnificent Mincio cycle path
A strategic position since the Middle Ages
between the 2017th and XNUMXth centuries it was equipped with fortifications by the Republic of Venice
which gave the walls and defensive bastions - included in the UNESCO world heritage list since XNUMX - the pentagonal shape still visible today
Peschiera has many reasons to attract visitors pleinair traveller
In addition to the beautiful rooms within the walls
the long walks on the shores of the lake or the boat trips
there is an extraordinary cycle path which
follows the banks of the Mincio reaching up to Mantua
turn left and go down a narrow dirt road that runs alongside the long defensive canal of the bastions
The signs indicate the beginning of the Mantua-Peschiera cycle route
an integral part of the Eurovelo 7 axis that connects the North Cape to Malta
you reach the town of Pozzolo after about twenty kilometres
Following the course of the river you cycle almost continuously in the territory of Mincio Regional Park, which includes the cycle path almost for its entire route
After a few hundred meters the sign for is visible on the right Fort Ardietti
This is one of the fourteen constructions commissioned by Marshal Radetzky to strengthen the Austrian defensive quadrilateral
of which Peschiera was part: an architectural masterpiece
which can be visited thanks to the passion and commitment of a group of volunteers
After the thermoelectric power plant the route moves to the left bank crossing the Salionze dam bridge
which has the function of regulating the level of Lake Garda and the water flow of the Mincio
At this point the river is flanked by the Virgilio canal
a significant hydraulic structure built in the early 1930s in order to collect the water necessary for irrigation of the countryside south-west of the lake
mallards and coots are at home along the river while nearby
In spring this splendid strip of land offers the lush and varied flowering of many spontaneous essences: cycling under a canopy of white and fragrant clusters of acacia flowers is certainly an exciting experience
The different varieties of poplars also put on a show with snowfalls of fluff flying in the air to help spread the seeds
Not to be outdone are the undergrowth and grassy edges
The route continues with the silhouette of the church of San Michele Arcangelo as a reference in the distance
which dominates the course of the Mincio from right bank
a location that is excellent as a base for a stopover thanks to the presence of aequipped area managed by the local camper association. In addition to church of San Michele the medieval castle
built in a dominant position over the Mincio valley
also known as church of the Discipline
The surrounding moraine hills preserve natural environments of great botanical value - characterized by peat bogs
fountains and uncultivated meadows - which have allowed the maintenance of a high degree of biodiversity
from typical species of Alpine flora to precious varieties of wild orchids
The mild climate and the good exposure of the hillsides have favored the development of fine vineyards and the establishment of Mediterranean plants such as olive and almond trees
with a detour - by bike or by camper if you want - you reach the small fortified village of Castellaro Lagusello crossing hilly landscapes with mixed groves of downy oaks
our bike itinerary continues on the left bank alongside cultivated fields and farms
until the crenellated towers of the Scaliger castle of Valeggio
Here you cross the river thanks to the imposing Visconti Bridge
built at the end of the 14th century by order of Gian Galeazzo Visconti
served as a dam and allowed the flow of water to be controlled
At the same time it carried out an important defensive function between the Duchy of Milan and the Scala dominions of Verona: the large access towers were equipped with doors with drawbridges and guard posts
From the bridge you can admire the small and ancient nucleus of Borghetto
characterized by water mills which for centuries have ground cereals using the current; many of them have been transformed into cafes
Inserted in the circuit of the most beautiful villages in Italy
the town invites you to take a refreshing break while tasting local dishes such as handmade tortellini and pike in sauce
From spring to late autumn the neighbor Sigurtà Garden It attracts thousands of visitors with its magnificent blooms
Beyond Borghetto the cycle path continues on the left bank
Some stretches of the banks are corners in their natural state where poplars and willows have been joined by hawthorn
with the spectacle of the continuous changing colors of the leaves
See this content on Instagram A post shared by Pleinairclub (@pleinairclub_)
you reach the Kiosk of the Mills, an appreciable one excellently managed rest point which constitutes a good refreshment point and is able to provide technical assistance to bicycles
a deviation of the cycle path allows you to arrive
after about five kilometers and overcoming a small difference in altitude
contains within it a castle and Palazzo Gonzaga
a country residence built in the mid-15th century by Ludwig II for his wife Barbara of Brandenburg
The historic building - now home to the town hall - can be visited together with the Italian gardens which annually host
The churchyard of the parish church is an extraordinary balcony on the last moraine hills and offers a beautiful view of the Mantua plain
Returning to the Chiosco dei Mulini and pedaling for a couple more kilometers you reach the town of Pozzolo
the finish line of the itinerary proposed by us
Those who still have time and energy can continue along the river for about another twenty kilometers up to Mantua
touching other interesting historical-naturalistic stages including the Bosco Fontana Bioenergetic Nature Reserve , Mincio Valleys Regional Reserve. Enjoying one of the most popular cycle routes in the North-East at a slow pace

Hailstones "the size of golf balls" have rained down on Italy’s Lake Garda damaging property and forcing tourists to hide out in hotels
Videos showing the massive hailstones falling on the town of Peschiera del Garda went viral on social media overnight
told Newstalk the weather has alternated from "heavy heat" to "strong winds and heavy rain" since he arrived
"We've had at least one weather event every day," he said
"It comes really quickly and then disappears very
it started to rain and then just hailstones like I've never seen before
"They were phenomenal – the size of your fist."
"I've never seen anything like that before; the damage was phenomenal.”

— NewstalkFM (@NewstalkFM) July 25, 2023
Mr Dunne said he was in a local bar when the thunderstorm began last night – as a 20-minute "fork lighting" storm lit up the small resort town before the hailstorm began
"I've never seen anything like that before and the amount of damage done was phenomenal," he said
and all the cars that were parked around the hotel were completely damaged."
Mr Dunne said the heavy-duty plastic chairs on his balcony were cracked in half
when we were just sitting in the hotel after the hailstorm
I'd say at least 10 ambulances over the course of maybe five
Lauren Whelan and Gráinne Smyth from Clare told Newstalk they were "stuck inside a restaurant" for two hours when the storm came over Peschiera
trying to pin down all the canopies and everything under chairs – it started raining through the roof," Ms Whelan said
and then there was another one and another one
My Apple Watch told me I was in too loud of an environment."
"There were ambulances and fire brigades going past us"
we were climbing over dirt with all the branches."
While locals in Peschiera are used to the area's "tropical climate"
Mr Dunne said the town was shocked by the extreme weather
"One of the managers in the hotel and one of the guys that was in the bar that we took refuge in said this year was crazy," he said
"These hailstones were certainly something that was not the norm
"I've never seen so many Ferraris in my life
I just hope they were all in garages because they're in bits otherwise."
Ms Smyth said she believed the hailstones were a first for Peschiera
"All the locals were out taking pictures and videos," she said
"When the thunder was going off last night
the whole apartment was shaking – the windows
but his flight remains delayed as the tropical weather continues
they came like a tropical storm – really hot before it
I wouldn't say it impacted our holiday – it made it interesting for sure

“Africa in Peschiera”—such was the motto of a migrant mob consisting mostly of young men from North Africa that terrorized several towns around Lake Garda
including the popular vacation destination Peschiera del Garda on June 2nd
The mob arranged to meet via TikTok for a dance and music party on the beach
with most of the men arriving from Veneto and Lombardy
But very soon the heated atmosphere escalated
assaults against residents and tourists occurred

which she had asked for help to prevent the escalation
Already on the train to Peschiera, young women were sexually harassed
A group of 16- and 17-year-old teenage girls was surrounded
and taunted by a group of about 30 men: “We were surrounded
and some of us fainted,” said one of the victims
She also said she was being sexually assaulted while trying to move to a different train car
and was told “white women don’t go up here.” Even though the train was filled with passengers
no one intervened to stop the assault until one boy came to the rescue of the victims and helped them get off at the next stop
On TikTok, one participant with a Moroccan flag called for the riots to continue in the seaside resort of Riccione near Rimini: “Peschiera was just to warm up—let’s see how it goes in Riccione.” This time
In Italy, the incident brought back memories of the sexual assaults on New Year’s Eve in Milan

I have – seemingly – signed up to decide every single meal that gets made and eaten at home

We went to Eurocamp and it was – honestly – fantastic
For our first ever Eurocamp experience we went to Eurocamp Bella Italia on Lake Garda
We chose it because it’s within taxi ride distance of Verona airport
we could fly direct from Gatwick for a non-insane price with British Airways
Also because it’s a five star resort as some habits die hard
It’s a lot bigger than I’d appreciated from the website
There’s a pool deep enough for jumping in that has three slides and daily aqua aerobics
There’s a pool that I think is meant for actual swimming that enforces a swimming hat rule
and two more pools with three more sets of slides
AND more pools that we didn’t get around to visiting
if your kids are water babies they’ll love it
You’ll read lots of reviews online in which people complain about a lack of loungers
This wasn’t an issue for us as the children are so young they can’t be in the pool unsupervised
so we left our towels on the buggy and when we wanted a rest we sat in the outdoor snack bar which always had seats
The lounger situation didn’t seem any different to most hotels I’ve been to though
there’s a kids’ club for children over the age of four
there’s lots of little playgrounds scattered throughout the site
I thoroughly recommend going to the onsite bouncy park that’s open from 5:30pm – 10:30pm
There’s also a mini disco which my six year old liked
and a little fairground that’s reasonably priced at 2 Euros per ride
But hats off to the lifeguards who heroically opened the pools on day two of the rain
The water’s warm and clear and there’s no chance of a jellyfish getting you (just me?)
There are decently priced activities such as pedalo hire for 8 Euros for 30 minutes
You can also walk along the lake to the nearest town
Corte Riga a pizzeria in an impressive setting in a courtyard
They’re both fine and reasonably priced but honestly
We much preferred walking into Peschiera for an evening meal
We ate our breakfast and lunch on our lodge’s terrace
There’s a supermarket and greengrocer on site and prices vary from reasonable to mad: 5.6 Euros for butter is a LOT (but sadly much the same as in the UK)
There are two Lidl supermarkets within walking distance of the site and we did our big shops there
But our kids loved queuing at the onsite supermarket in the morning for fresh bread and choosing between a huge selection of croissants each day there
They strongly recommend the chocolate ones
We stayed in a three bedroomed Azure comfort plus home
The bedrooms were pretty compact but the living space large and the deck a treat
as was the whole site – there’s not a bit of litter anywhere
but make sure you take some laundry tablets with you as towels and linen are not changed during your stay
There are a number of laundrettes on site and a 30min wash is 5 Euros
You need to pay a 100 Euro housekeeping deposit
which I think is pretty standard for European holiday parks
Eurocamp let you leave your key behind in the lodge
and I’m completely converted to a Eurocamp holiday
A seven night stay for four people in August 2024 at Eurocamp Bella Italia starts at £1,706.00

Cormac Bourke takes his family on a package holiday to Lake Garda
The Lake Garda shoreline below Castello Scaligero
Just some of the pools at the Bella Italia resort at Lake Garda
There’s enough at the Bella Italia resort to keep the little ones entertained
Cormac BourkeMon 3 Jun 2019 at 03:30The lightning flashed
a noise slowly grew louder and more rhythmic
Like the sound of a tap dripping but much louder
And so it proved to be - somewhere between a drip and a downpour
water falling from the roof of our chalet on to the double bed in which the two boys slept
Not exactly the first night of the holiday we had expected as summer began in northern Italy
It's a bit like the maxim that life is what happens to you when you are busy making other plans
The holiday is what happens to you while you were busy being on holiday
The fun of the family holiday is frequently the unexpected challenge overcome
The coldest May in 60 years according to a local was one thing (separately
the esteemed Italy-based journalist Paddy Agnew apologised by email for the "very unseasonably cold May")
a storm the like of which the people of Peschiera del Garda had not experienced in over 25 years was something else
a river of water and ice (from the hail) had poured down the central street of our excellent Bella Italia campsite
Holiday bungalows are not supposed to have to face weather like this
Our chalet problem in fact only underlined the benefit of something we were trying for the first time: the joy of a package deal and the holiday in-resort manager
So it was a simple matter of a few WhatsApp messages and a quick visit from superb Topflight in-resort manager Connor and we were moving around the corner into a new chalet - without even needing to go to reception
We had arrived late afternoon into a sunny Verona airport
When it's your first time flying as a family of six
it is a pleasure having the friendly face of your in-resort manager welcome you at airport arrivals and help corral the four kids (after their first flights
ever) and your eight bags and get the whole lot into the transfer coach
Within half an hour we had driven through the outskirts of the city and arrived at our holiday house in Bella Italia
a beautiful resort near the aforementioned Peschiera on the Southern edge of Lake Garda
The lake looked majestic when we first saw her - dark clouds starting to gather over her darkening waters
the Alps and the Dolomites forming the backdrop
we managed to eat our first authentic Italian meal out on the terrace before the weather changed
The kids were bowled over by real Italian pizza and gelato
And the whole table was particularly impressed by the Italian waiter's ''Go raibh maith agat'' when we finished our order
It was little things like this that made us feel so welcome at Bella Italia
I was reminded of previous visits to Italy and the warmth Italians show generally
they will try to speak to you in your language if you don't speak theirs (I don't)
they want to show you their beautiful country and their amazing food
although the resort offers a wide range of accommodation types - mobile homes
we couldn't check out the five swimming pools that first day - but we certainly made up for that later in the week
so we had brought raincoats and wetsuits - day one gave us the chance to explore the site
stock up on supplies from the onsite supermarket and fruit and veg shop
eat a few crepes in the cafe and test some of the playgrounds dotted around the site
The next morning we woke to blue skies and took our first dip in the pool which has a range of pretty spectacular water slides and features to keep the little ones entertained
Peschiera del Garda is about 15 minutes walk away along the lakeside (which is a beautiful route to run too) but the resort also runs a small road train in and out every half an hour or so
it is quaint and friendly with its Roman gates and cobbled streets
Given the ages of our co-travellers - nine
seven and twins aged five - it would have been remiss not to have taken the opportunity to visit Gardaland
the Italian equivalent of a mini Disneyland
the same parent company that owns a string of Legolands and Alton Towers in Britain
on a detour home from France through the UK
we had visited Peppa Pig World in Paulton's Park in Southampton
Little did I think I would be visiting Peppa Pig land in Gardaland less than a year later
The twins may now expect a Peppa Pig theme park to feature on every holiday
A free shuttle bus from the train station in Peschiera del Garda runs every 20 minutes and drops you at the entrance to the park
It was a relaxed way to enjoy the theme park experience
You can book tickets online or buy them at the door but the key was to go on a school day in Italy
The queues were no more than 10 minutes long and we got to go on what felt like dozens of rides
or maybe it was that we went on some rides dozens of times
In fact the longest queue was for a coffee
and that was mainly because the barista was putting a lot of effort into making sure the previous customer's sandwich was toasted perfectly
The rides are great - from full-on rollercoasters to traditional (and gentler) carousels for the smaller smallies - and are classified as either ''fantasy''
the underground pirate ride called I Corsari: la Vendetta del Fantasma was a little scary for the five-year-olds (one asked: ''Why have you brought us here?'')
when I Google-translated its name for the writing of the piece
It translates - at least roughly - as Revenge of the Ghost Pirates
There is also a separate Aquarium at Gardaland
we didn't go in but it would be a good option if you did encounter bad weather
only after missing the real train by a matter of minutes
Crestfallen and frustrated and pretty much all having a fight at the same time in the wake of our transport disaster
we had spotted a bus with the number 164 and word Verona on it and run en masse to the next stop and managed to find a remarkably patient and understanding bus driver who happily transported us all the Verona for half nothing
The downside was that we had to stand for 40 minutes but it was far more preferable to be moving at speed along Italian roads rather than cooling your heels waiting for the next train
While the train would have left us away from the absolute centre of Verona (as we discovered when we had to walk out to it later)
the bus dropped us by the old Roman amphit heatre
heart of the city's most tourist-friendly area
Nowadays it's used for opera events and historical tours
though you might spot the odd Roman with a plastic sword posing for pictures out front
these centurions will want a few quid for the inevitable picture with the kids - even if it has not been agreed in advance
As you wander through the streets there are historic buildings on every corner
where we had lunch amid the tourist bustle
Verona is of course famous as the location for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet
So we visited Juliet's house and her famous balcony
You enter the courtyard via a small archway
covered in autographs and padlocks from lovers who have visited
From ground to ceiling you are surrounded by love messages
And the bronze statue of the young Juliet contemplates her sweet Romeo as she poses for picture after picture with the tourists
but he wasn't in (the gates were locked and
we trooped back through the city and up to the train station and travelled back on the train
The luxury of it compared to standing on the swaying bus
I would have easily stayed on the whole way to Milan but alas the journey only took about 15 minutes
And that was pretty much our trip to Lake Garda
This time we didn't actually go out on the lake - world famous and the largest in Italy
But sure we'll leave the boats to next time
A holiday in Italy has to be the best — from a food point of view — for kids
My youngest son now says that he is going to live there when he grows up
the Verona Arena is a brilliant venue for concerts of all genres
The acoustics are particularly suitable for opera
so getting one of the cushions available for rent is vital
Cormac and his family travelled to Lake Garda with Topflight
and stayed at the highly sought after 4* Bella Italia Resort in Peschiera del Garda

A holiday maker from Nobber has told of how a terrifying freak storm forced her family to seek shelter after hailstones "the size of sliotars” rained down on their camp resort in Northern Italy on Sunday night
Macaire Hutchinson’s dream holiday turned to a nightmare as a violent storm wreaked havoc on the Eurocamp Bella Italia on Lake Garda in Peschiera del Garda leaving their accommodation destroyed
"It has been very temperamental since we came here last Thursday
there has been torrential rain a couple of the days and there have been thunder storms almost every night
we were shin deep in water at one point but was out of nowhere,” said Macaire
“There was thunder and lightening for well over an hour
it was a bit bizarre but then we heard this almighty crashing noise
it sounded like a stampede coming from behind us and we kind of copped what was happening and we literally ran inside our safari tent and I bundled the kids under the bed and hailstones
they were sliotars were coming from the sky
"It totally destroyed the tent that we were in
The aftermath of the freak weather event “looked like a scene from a sci fi movie” according to Macaire
"It was like a battle field yesterday morning
people were walking around with bandages after being injured
Walking around it’s still an absolute mess
there were dead birds floating in the lake yesterday
"It looks like somebody took a gun and shot all of the cars
“It’s like scene from the The Day After Tomorrow."
A huge clean up operation in currently underway for the unprecedented situation as the Nobber woman explains;
"I’d say every building and mobile home here has damage done to it
" There was a guy I was talking to from Eurocamp who has been working here sixteen years and he said he has never seen anything like it
They have cancelled people’s bookings and everything because they have nowhere to put them
People were arriving yesterday and they were turned away
there were six safari tents and four out of the six are destroyed.”
Macaire has praised the camp operator and says she hopes her family can remain in the mobile home they were placed in after their tent was destroyed until they leave for Ireland on Thursday
"All of our stuff got absolutely saturated because the tent came in on top of us when we were under the bed so all of our clothes and everything were destroyed
we are just trying to dry everything and go back to normal holiday mode if we can
"Eurocamp has been very good and they have been doing their best for us
The firefighter is looking on the bright side and says she is thankful that nobody was seriously injured
"We were after being in Gardaland and left a little bit earlier
We got a bus to the train station and we walked back up here so if we had been caught out in it I don’t know what we would have done
the hailstones were so big they could have killed you."

The Bella Italia Campsite is a magical place that takes over-heated
Sophie WhiteMon 11 Jul 2016 at 03:30Once you have kids
the goalposts of what you consider a good holiday to be
what really makes a perfect holiday is not uninterrupted relaxation (ha) or perfect weather or cultural enrichment
All we can really hope for on a family holiday
is tantrum-limitation and damage- control
I planned a holiday in the company of the highly mercurial person I made myself and the person with whom I made this histrionic little cutie
I contemplated our pending week in Northern Italy on the shores of Lake Garda with a grim set to my mouth and the kind of resolve-steeling that GI's presumably engage in before being deployed into battle
I've done enough of this parenting business to know that the first trade-off for a week of lakeside luxury (punctuated by tantrums) was
the two-hour plane journey required to get there
the plane was populated by professional parents who clearly knew their shit when it came to international babysitting
My lack of preparation and forethought was immediately exposed by my dearth of in-flight entertainment for the toddler
All I had by way of distraction was two small toy cars and a bag of dried mango
A family of five two rows away had a mobile entertainment system that rivalled anything from MTV Cribs
I spent the plane journey desperately trying to shield my son from the knowledge that a thing called an iPad exists
we were greeted by our resort representative and could immediately abandon all thinking and revert to sheep-mode
We were shown to our bus and spirited through the northern Italian countryside to our destination
Bella Italia Campsite on the southern end of lovely Lake Garda
My idea of a campsite is mainly gleaned from gloomy
arranged in resigned rows gazing bleakly out on steel grey Irish waters
so I was ready to be impressed by virtually anything
On arriving at Bella Italia on a sunny May morning
first on the agenda was check-in and a stroll around our new neighbourhood
I was beginning to feel tentatively optimistic about the holiday; then I saw the first of the many playgrounds on site within spitting distance of our holiday bungalow
The sight of a playground to a beleagured parent is akin to the sight of an oasis to a parched castaway on a desert island
And I'd already passed TWO between reception and our accommodation
I resolved then and there to never holiday anywhere else again
Bella Italia is a huge complex about the size of three or four Stephen's Greens stuck together; despite this
which I resented somewhat as any time I tried to lose my family
The site hosts about 8,000 holiday-makers at peak capacity
but it doesn't feel crowded and runs remarkably efficiently
especially as more than half of those holidaymakers seem to be children
I would hazard a guess that the children outnumber the adults two to one easily
almost like a factory for familial harmony
over-tired and grumpy from air travel and disruption of the all-important routine onto the Bella Italia conveyor belt and watch by a process of playgrounds every 50 metres
exhausted parent on the same conveyor belt and feel a transformation take place
After possibly years (depending on how far down this road of breeding you've gone) of sleep deprivation
we are delivered from our children by wagons purveying Nutella crepes
impossibly understanding waiters who seem to genuinely enjoy our children's presence and divine Italian pizza at least once a day
the man and I would agree that we would never be taking our children anywhere else until they were 18 - it was heaven
We saw the occasional childless group of 20-somethings strolling gingerly around amid the armies of knee-high lunatics who clearly owned the place
but had the haunted look of people whose holiday was being somewhat invaded by a harsh dose of reality
With life running so smoothly within the confines of the campsite
it was tempting and indeed very possible to simply spend the week barricaded inside the parameters
There are several restaurants to choose from
shops selling various inflatable pool toys
There's a doctor on site; there's even a hairstylist
Your every need is catered for just a short stroll from your front door
Who needs to find the real northern Italian experience
I could have happily lived out my days there sunbathing under the trees in front of our two-bed self-catered bungalow
the self-catered thing is the only way to go with littlies
Most days we ate lunch out in the restaurants and did breakfast and dinner at home as
in my experience dinner out with a toddler is so not worth it
We did venture further afield a couple of times and found that the surrounding area is every bit as welcoming to children as Bella Italia
Italians love children; a few people had mentioned this to me before the holiday
This warmth is a lovely thing for a parent more accustomed to side-eye and eye-rolling upon entering an Irish restaurant or cultural centre accompanied by their sticky kids
On the recommendation of our Topflight rep
Ulaf - who was on hand to make sure that basically
everything from booking tours to arranging a buggy for us was taken care of - we took the bus
from the campsite to the nearby city of Verona to take in the sites with a guided tour
I steeled myself just praying that my companions
As we followed our wonderfully engaging tour guide around that beautiful
dusky pink city - Verona is largely built from rose coloured limestone from the nearby Valpolicella region - I was relieved to discover that toddlers and golden oldies are actually well-matched in the walking tour stakes
the pace and frequent stops suited us all perfectly
The city is a very manageable 40 minutes from Bella Italia and boasts one of the largest amphitheatres in Italy
an impressive structure so well preserved it is still in use for music concerts and festivals with a capacity of 16,000
though in ancient times it held an incredible 30,000 spectators
Seemingly everywhere in Verona - a UNESCO heritage site - there is stunning architecture
from antiquity through Medieval and Renaissance periods to admire
Strolling the streets offers the perfect way to drink in perfectly preserved sculptures
shady vine-draped courtyards and the general atmosphere of romance
A visit to the balcony of Shakespeare's doomed heroine Juliet turned out to be a bit of a scrum
as eager tourists elbowed and jostled each other out of the way to cop a feel of a bronze statue of the tragic lover standing in a tiny courtyard beneath the balcony
Juliet's breasts have been molested so enthusiastically over the years that the right one has actually gone shiny
I spent a long time in the dark enclosed alley leading to the courtyard reading the messages crowding the walls
left by lovers who visited the romantic site
Scrawled proclamations of undying devotion shout over one another and stretch from the ground underfoot to the curved ceiling above
Fortified by delights from the market stalls in Piazza Delle Erbe - they do a sort of portable sweet fondue with gooey chocolate and skewered fruit that is just what one needs to fuel relaxed aimless wandering of the sort done on holidays - we headed homeward to our lakeside retreat
Another jaunt out of the campsite took us to the nearby town of Peschiera
From here we went by boat to explore the town's fortress that is bordered by a series of interconnecting canals
After the injection of history and culture
which satisfied the toddler for many a tantrum-free hour
There are roller-coasters that the man adored and costumed characters aplenty
The toddler was enrolled in The Kung Fu Panda Academy for a happy stint
the highlight of which was one of those freaky glass tunnels where sharks eyeball you as you amble through and incongruously cheerful-looking rays glide overhead
we struck out from our campsite refuge and took on an arguably more edifying adventure
the procuring of and use of the bikes was incredibly easy
We rocked up to the Bella Italia bike rental shop and were fitted out with bikes
helmets and toddler carrier in under 10 minutes
We chose a gorgeous 40km round trip downriver to the town of Valeggio Sul Mincio for our Famous Family Go Cycling adventure
Our destination was the gardens of Parco Giardino Sigurta
where visitors can explore the 10km of pathways and trails of this beautiful estate by foot
surrounding countryside and the farm where the toddler lost his mind over goats and deer
while the man and I lost our minds to a repetitive cycle of Old McDonald
we broke for lunch at an idyllic riverside restaurant in a huge garden where the toddler could roam free
pestering other families and playing with the provided toys
The cycle back gave me time to ponder the question: How the hell will we ever coax the toddler back on that plane and convince him to leave this paradise of pizza and piazzas
It might be time to purchase that iPad after all

Serene Lake Garda is located in the north of Italy in the foothills of the Alps
A dream worthy destination full of swoon-worthy vistas
Here’s your ultimate guide to the best things to do in Lake Garda
as well as some top travel tips to know before you go
Please note that Lake Garda is known as Lago di Garda in Italian
If you love romance, beautiful scenery, and mouthwatering food (and, to be honest, who doesn’t?), then you should look no further for reasons to visit Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy, which can be found in the region of Lombardy
A visit to the area during any time of the year feels akin to stepping into a movie set
as referenced by the fact that countless movies and TV shows have used Lake Garda as a filming location
Of course, thanks to its enormous size, the best way to truly enjoy Lake Garda at a relaxed pace is over the course of several days, and this is probably why many people choosing to honeymoon in Italy select Lake Garda as a go-to destination
Check here for tour details from Verona and here for tour details from Venice
As one of the most popular vacation spots in Italy
there’s no shortage of fantastic places to stay on Lake Garda
though you should note that they often tend to be on the pricier side of things as it is a sought after destination
be sure to book your accommodation as soon as you have your dates set as hotels will likely only go up in price
I also recommend renting a car to help you get around the area
Check car rental comparison prices here. Otherwise
here are some of our top recommendations for places to stay in Lake Garda based on location and web-reviews:
Budget- Lake Garda Beach Hostel: This laid-back hostel is located right on the shores of the lake and you can either book mixed dorms, or for an extra fee, pay for a private room. There’s a breakfast buffet served on the terrace and access to a private beach. Check prices and availability here.
Mid-range- Hotel Benaco Nodari Giovanni & C. Sas: This three-star hotel is situated on the northern shore of Lake Garda and boasts amenities such as free parking, a breakfast buffet, and a terrace with a hot tub. Check prices and availability here.
Luxury- Lefay Resort & SPA Lago di Garda: For an unforgettable stay during your time in Lake Garda, you’ll want to book yourself into this five-star hotel. Highlights include sweeping views, a wellness centre, two swimming pools, and an on-site restaurant. Check prices and availability here.
While you can always opt for public transportation, in order to get the most out of your visit (including the flexibility to check out hidden gems and more off the beaten path locations), you’ll want to rent your own car. Check out car rental comparison prices here.
The area surrounding the delightful town of Sirmione has been inhabited since around 6000 BCE and became a popular resort for wealthy families from Verona during Roman times
Sirmione remains a popular resort town and some highlights include the Scaligero Castle and Grotto of Cattulo
This charming little town is best-known for its charming streets
Some of the best things to do in town include the 16th-century built Fortress of Peschiera del Garda and relaxing on one of the many beaches close to Peschiera del Garda
Postcard-worthy Salò has a population of just 10000 residents and its rather compact nature means that it’s best explored on foot
Highlights you won’t want to miss include the Salo Museum
where you can learn more about Lake Garda and its surroundings
and the picturesque Zanardelli lakefront
Limone sul Garda is a small town with just over 1000 inhabitants
the only way to reach the town way by boat or directly through the mountains
the name Limone probably does not derive from the abundance of lemons in the area
but instead from the ancient word for elm or boundary
one of the main attractions in town is Museo dei Pescatori
Picture perfect Malcesine is a small town on the eastern shore of the lake
Highlights include narrow lanes filled with quaint cafés and vibrant shopping opportunities
The town is also home to the remains of a 13th-century medieval castle
Riva del Garda has long been a favourite haunt of those who love sailing and other water sports activities
The historic town can be found on the northern tip of the lake and boasts a medieval centre (which is presided over by the 13th-century stone Apponale clock tower)
and postcard worthy views of the lake itself
The town is also famed for its special Riva del Garda lemons
which were brought from the Liguria Riviera to Lake Garda by monks in the 13th-century and have been cultivated in the surrounding countryside ever since
the best way to experience the lemons for yourself is to sample some of the local citrus-infused cuisine or by heading to a market to buy some of these succulent fruits for yourself
This small tourist resort is closely associated with cobbled lanes
and intense floral displays during the summer months
This Lake Garda settlement has a population of around 2700 and is a quiet spot to escape the hustle and bustle of busy modern day life
Situated on the eastern shores of Lake Garda
this picturesque waterside village is famed for its oil and wine production and its churches
some of which date all the way back to the 12th-century
The town is rather unique in that it is herring-bone in shape; streets are perpendicular to the water
The sleepy little town of Desenzano del Garda can be found on the southern shore of Lake Garda and is particularly famed for its well-preserved Roman villa boasting mosaic floors
which can be admired by heading to The Antiquarium at Via Crocefisso 22
Windsurfing is one of the most popular activities to partake in close to Torbole
which is also known as Nago–Torbole (as the two towns have been administratively merged)
The town has a population of just under 3000 residents and some of the main attractions in town include hiking and water sports activities
This small yet charming town has been a popular place to live for many millennia
and thanks to archaeological excavations of a nearby pile-dwelling village
it’s been ascertained that there were already people living in the vicinity by the Early Bronze Age (1900 – 200 BCE)
A local resident by the name of Pompeo Molmenti created a popular local rosé known as Chiaretto which is a deep cherry colour
Lazise lies on the southeastern shores of Lake Garda and is prized for its charming landscapes and historic appeal
One of the most culturally important slices of architecture in this town of just under 7000 residents are the well-preserved Scaliger Walls which date back to the 14th-century and once surrounded the entire town
this medieval village lies in the foothills of Alpine peaks
giving it a unique ambiance of being between the water and the rocky mountains
The rustic charm can easily be felt here by giving yourself an hour or so to wander around the cobbled lanes and allow Villa Canale to reveal itself to you
Those who wish to be fulls transported back in time would do well to head to the “Rustico Medioevo” festival
Nestled on the eastern shores of Lake Garda
the delightful Torri del Benaco is presided over by Scaligero Castle
an impressive fortress constructed during the Middle Ages on the grounds of a former Roman fort
one of the best things to do in and around Lake Garda is to stroll around the little lakeside towns and soak up their ambiance
If you only have time to visit a few towns
be sure to prioritise ones such as Sirmione
If you wish to experience a hidden gem of a town
The beautiful road of Strada della Forra (known in English as Road of the Gorge) is famed for its windy nature
was called the ‘eighth wonder of the world’ by Winston Churchill
and has been featured in a number of films over the years
including as a backdrop in the filming of the Quantum of Solace James Bond film
This gem of a location is an aesthetic spot made famous on social media thanks to its sheer beauty
The promontory is the site of a 15th-16th-century villa which is surrounded by Cypress trees swaying in the breeze and the azure waters of the lake
The site is best visited at sunset when candy colours dance through the sky and across the water
then one of the best things to do when visiting Lake Garda is to keep an eye out for filming locations
Thanks to the beauty of the water and its surroundings
a number of blockbuster movies have been filmed here
This includes Quantum of Solace and Call Me By Your Name
then you won’t want to miss out on this Middle Ages masterpiece
which can be found in the historic centre of Sirmione
Water actually goes into the outer courtyard and boats would have moored here in times gone by
The Castle is managed as part of the Garda Museums complex and
The stunning hidden gem (known as Lake Tenno in English) is a small body of water close to the northern shore of Lake Garda
You can go swimming there or simply relax on its shores
you can even reach the central island (which is surrounded by water during the cooler months of the year)
one of the best ways to truly appreciate all that Lake Garda has to offer is by taking a boat ride out on the water
Here are some of our top picks (featuring a variety of budgets and activities):
One of the best ways to indulge during a trip to Italy is by getting a glimpse of local life
and perhaps nowhere is this easier to do than by taking a trip to the market
There’s a market almost every day of the week depending on which town/ village you go to:
The small rocky outcrop of Rocca di Manerba is located on the southwestern shores of Lake Garda and is named for its medieval fortification period
Used as a fortress since at least Roman times
today you can hike to the top of the hill to enjoy gorgeous views over the lake
The Italianate hillside estate of Vittoriale degli Italiani is a true delight for garden lovers and is where where the Italian poet and novelist Gabriele D’Annunzio lived between 1922 until his death in 1938
Today you can visit the museum and its surrounding park for a small fee
the historic church dedicated to Saint Peter in Mavino dates back to the 8th-century CE
It’s one of the oldest ecclesiastical buildings in the area
is free to visit (though optional donations are always welcome)
The little island of Isola del Garda is one of the most romantic spots in Lake Garda and is the largest island on the lake
and previous uses include as a Roman burial ground
Yet another small island which you can check out during your time in Lake Garda is Isola San Biagio
The island is open to visitors from around 1st of May until the 15th of September each year and you’ll have to pay a small admission charge to set foot on the island
You can reach the island by ferry from “Porto Torchio” or by boat
Located within the Parco Grotta Cascate Varone, the Varone waterfall is known as Cascate Varone in Italian and is a pair of waterfalls which cascade into a cave around 3 kilometetres north-west of Lake Garda. Open every day from 10 AM to 5 PM (with last admission at 4:30 PM), you can buy tickets on the park’s official website.
One of the more unique ways to enjoy your time in Lake Garda is to go canyoning on a tour like this one. Taking place over the course of several hours
over the course of your lesson you’ll leap into water
and embark on a tour for beginners with low pressure that suits your comfort level
Northern Italy is famed for its wines and so
you’ll have a great excuse to sample the local wines and even go on a vineyard tour
Here are some of our top picks for wine tours in the area:
there’s no shortage of beautiful hikes surrounding Lake Garda
one of the absolute best hikes in the area is to hike to Punta Larici
then the hike takes around half an hour and will take you to around 900 meters above sea level
where you can enjoy some pretty gorgeous views
one of the best things to do in Italy is to indulge in Italian food
there’s no shortage of mouthwatering dishes to sample
Some special dishes which come directly from Lake Garda include:
