Piazza brought star power and a big bat to the team
led them to the playoffs twice after an 11-year hiatus
and hit one of the most memorable home runs in Shea Stadium history in the city’s first Major League Baseball game after 9/11
Widely considered the greatest hitting catcher of all time
Piazza was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2016
Piazza’s father was a successful car salesman in suburban Philadelphia who was pals with Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda
this access sometimes worked against Piazza
but the jealousy and power struggles it created gave him a relentless drive.“Not one time did I ever see Mike just jog to first base on a ground ball
even a ground ball to the second baseman,” his Mets teammate and friend Al Leiter once said
He spoke to me recently from his home outside Milan
Our conversation took place after he returned from dinner out and before putting his son to bed
What’s your day-to-day life like there? My wife and I did a small soccer project over here
“Let’s try to get something positive out of Italy.”
we put our children in school in the Parma area
It was just going to be a two-year project to put them in school
Then my two girls fell in love with an American school in Switzerland in Lugano
But it’s turned out to be a great thing for them
Part of your persona in your playing career was not only being a proud Italian but also leading a charmed life
So when people hear you’re living in Italy
of course you’re living somewhere nice.Well
I think a little bit of shine comes off the ball when you’re living the day to day
living in New York every day — people don’t understand
But then living there day to day is like a grind
you just never get used to: the three-hour nap
I remember my wife and I were looking to lease a car and went into a BMW dealership just before lunchtime
it’s time for lunch.” If my dad was working at this dealership and the staff pushed away a customer for lunch
along with all the general cultural differences
you just see Italians bake in the sun all day
Your career arc is interesting because your father was a wealthy
in the sense that your family connection to Tommy Lasorda created its own backlash
That privilege became an obstacle in many ways
It gave you a chip on your shoulder that you needed to earn everything and overcome the skepticism
The relationship with Tommy exposed me to the Champagne parties of their teams of the ’70s
seeing the way they work and finding inspiration from that experience
That was very important for me because I vividly remember it from when I was a kid — those images are tattooed in my mind
But there was a moment where I actually walked away from baseball because I was so tired of the drama and the treatment fueled by resentment
I’m no different than thousands of other guys who didn’t make it
and I just became mean and surly and short-tempered
It was almost like getting dumped by the girl of your dreams and then when she begs you to come back
I was sensitive to criticism and the media and talking about Tommy
like when I was named the starting catcher for the Dodgers and Tommy was asked in a live interview
And I just remember biting my tongue and thinking
But that’s probably what propelled me to have the career I did
I guess there’s a lesson in there somewhere
Because I feel like if I didn’t go through those moments
I don’t feel like I would’ve accomplished what I did
There’s a cinematic moment in your autobiography: You describe the first time you got to be a batboy
you walked into the clubhouse expecting to see guys warming up for a game
and instead they’re all crowded around a TV watching a porno. That’s pretty funny
but I think it humanized them because I had them on this level of being gladiators
And coming from a very conservative Catholic household
I remember mentioning it to my parents and my mom was like
But I got to see the whole experience of life behind the scenes as a big-leaguer
It wasn’t just hitting home runs and cheers and flashbulbs going off
and guys screaming when they were getting worked on because of various bruises and things like that
Like seeing behind The Wizard of Oz’s screen
you were earning more than most American-born baseball players earn today in off-field endorsements
Why hasn’t baseball had another guy like you who regularly puts himself and his personality out there in the public eye and enjoys doing it?Things were completely different in the sense that there was no internet when I came up
You couldn’t just go on Instagram and say what you’re doing — you had to go out and do things
And I’ll give my first agent credit: He said
“Just because you have numbers doesn’t mean you’re going to get paid — you have to create a persona
you have to do the interviews.” The PR side is very important because when fans hear you say
“I want $10 million a year,” or whatever the case may be
if they know who you are and the team is not treating you well
then you’re going to build that fan sentiment
But I think it also goes back to being one of the rare players to have the prime of my career in market No
It probably wouldn’t have been that way if I had played in a smaller city somewhere in the Midwest
or does baseball just have more of an exposure problem that goes bigger these days?I think some guys are more guarded
it’s more difficult for baseball guys to put themselves out there
And we’re not as international as some other stars are
in a sense: We don’t make a lot of money off shoes because Nike and Adidas don’t sell a lot of spikes; soccer’s worldwide
I guess that made us a little more creative
and I was able to get gigs — and it was fun
I also had the attitude of I’m lucky to be here
But guys today … I think if you’re making $20 to $30 million a year now and have a private jet
“Would you come and do this for $100 grand,” they’re going to be thinking about it
I’ll do it!” I think companies are really going to have to pay a lot of money to get guys out of the house
But any time you’re remembered in pop culture like that
I’m also blessed with the fact that I guess I’m in some video game
they still know me because I’m in this video game
It’s some game that has this “Legends” feature with points
I don’t know because I’m not a video gamer
Are you surprised?” It was really funny having an 11-year-old kid who was born after I retired talk about me in that way
even looking back now is — I hate to get cliché — it just doesn’t seem real
It was one of those out-of-body experiences where you felt like
that somebody was definitely looking out for me
we were emotional wrecks because of everything we had gone through that week
I didn’t realize this so much when I played because everything was so physical
trying to make people feel better and then coming back to work out
Doing the Special Forces show a few years ago
you realize your body does have an overdrive gear somewhere that we rarely tap into because we only need it in times of stress or crisis
and I see it with these Special Forces guys
and I really felt everyone was emotionally pulling for me
It doesn’t get any less vivid as the years roll on
in the sense that I think generally as a society
and I think something like 9/11 will obviously never lose its historical significance
I don’t know if it was emotional or it was just a block
They’re giving us a special tour.” And I said
“I already saw this,” you know what I mean
I actually felt more serene by the fountains outside with the names
You’ve said before that 9/11 was a dividing line for you.It altered the path of my life in the sense that I realized at that point I just didn’t want to be the bachelor
I wanted to have a legacy and have children
it wasn’t that I was averse to getting married and having kids; it was just that I was so focused on my career
you saw how special family was and how sad it was for people
my physical skills were starting to decline a little bit
and then I got hurt and I was out for three months
and then I think ’04 and ’05 weren’t great
San Diego was a fun bounce-back year for me
I was glad I went through that experience because I didn’t want to go out in a sour or somber way
It was just one of those years where I felt young again
you had a method of having a girlfriend for an entire season
Because it sounds like the plot of Bull Durham.Maybe I was too comfortable when I was dating someone
I either didn’t have the energy to go out and date other people or I was transfixed by my career
I remember the volleyball player Gabrielle Reece coined the term season girlfriend
It was a reverse courtship in a way: They were pursuing me and obviously other guys who were in baseball
It wasn’t like we really had to do tons of work
It’s funny you say that because maybe it’s a little similar to when you’re married and you retire: There’s a different energy after that
some don’t make it because when someone retires
they’re around all the time and boredom sets in
Maybe he gains weight and probably doesn’t get motivated because he’s not doing the same thing
you don’t have to shovel,” if that makes sense: You can do little projects
probably nothing can ever replace performing in a crowded stadium
Do people still chase that in some way? That’s a good question
I think the first key is realizing that what you do will never be as exciting as what you did
You have to adjust and find things that interest you
but you have to resign yourself to knowing that whatever you do will never be as exciting
That doesn’t mean it’s boring or it’s not fun
it’s just a buddy calling me up on a Sunday like
Let’s go get lunch and a cigar,” and we tell jokes and talk about things
And I think a lot of guys struggle with it
But you have to be secure with knowing that it’s over and that you’ve got to go home sometimes
when I was in the disco or the club and the lights go on
What else is there to do?” They just don’t want the party to end
I think you have to use that as a metaphor for your career and say
How long did it take to adjust?A few years
it was a little longer because I just got to the end quickly
And then you realize not only is your body not responding the way you want it to
but I had such a high level of expectations for myself
Al Leiter has a saying: “You don’t lose your desire to play
you lose your desire to prepare to play.” In previous years
It starts to wear on your psyche a little bit
“Mike and the Mad Dog.” If you have a bad game
But there was that competition with the Yankees
We got the back page!” That was just part of the jungle that was New York
When we had those first subway series in ’99
Those games were like World Series playoff games
I would put them on par with the intensity of any regular-season game in the history of the game
or do they have no choice but to play that role and chase the media the way you regretted they had at the time?Well
I don’t know if I regret … they’re just trying to put butts in the seats
the best part about it was that we knew other teams hated playing there
so it was a real home-field advantage for us
There was a point I was about to make here
We were in a different time in the sense that we were competing for publicity; we were competing for excitement to get the fans out
You’ve said New York City has a way of draining an athlete
The city uses up the spirit and passion in a player.I call it the “football mentality.” When a team loses in football
they talk about it the whole week until the next game
they’ll talk about it for the next 20 hours before we play the next day
I remember one time coming into the ballpark and everyone was like
“Did you hear ‘Mike and the Mad Dog’ last night?” I go
I went home and went to bed.” They were like
they were talking about it all day.” I just remember saying to myself
I’ve got to hit a home run tonight because if I don’t
they’re still going to talk about this mistake I made
And there’s a lot of guys who couldn’t do it
One thing that got attention in your book was your opinions on Hispanic ballplayers
have your attitudes about those things changed?Hmm
I think growing up in a sheltered environment and not having a lot of world education
for lack of a better word … but also don’t forget
I went to the Dominican Republic after I had first signed with the Dodgers
So I got to see and feel the hunger of those guys
when we make something too easy for people
I’ve learned in my life that because of my personal situation
and I think you see it in their successes and I’ve talked to a lot of them now
what motivated them in a sense — and I’ve seen this even in my own coming to Italy — sometimes you have to have a sink-or-swim mentality
I don’t even get affected with languages living in Italy
I am so completely oblivious when I hear other languages now
You were driven by your father to be a baseball player in a way few people can appreciate
you felt as though you played more for your dad than for yourself
Did you ever feel out of control of your destiny? My dad was an incredible man
I saw his pain sometimes when he wanted to be around me all the time
Talking about retirement being tough on me — it was very
But how could I not have gratitude and appreciate the fact that he encouraged me
but my personality is such that I enjoyed sharing it with people
It is important to share it with people because I didn’t get there alone
and I was so blessed to have this sixth sense to listen to people
But as a continually overlooked college player and minor leaguer
you had the hunger to seek it out when you needed to.Yeah
and I knew I wouldn’t have been a good minor leaguer if I was married with a kid or whatever
I wouldn’t have been able to perform with that pressure
I would’ve probably been divorced because I was just not in that mode
I was lucky that something was telling me to wait
wait because I wouldn’t have been a good husband at all
Not that I would’ve been a womanizer or anything
That’s just unfortunately part of the animal
I never really knew what that meant when I was younger

Shantay Piazza keeps her office at The Ohio State University stocked with snacks: chips
She does this to help people feel more comfortable
I am responsible for how people feel in here
and I started to learn about food insecurity
“I was coming out of the parking garage the other day and someone said
Piazza graduated from Ohio State with a bachelor’s degree in English in 2005
and managed marketing and communications for the College of Arts and Sciences
“Ohio State means a lot of things to a lot of people
It means something to people who love sports
It means something to people who are interested in agriculture
It means something to people who have pets and go to the veterinary hospital
My whole career has been building an understanding of what Ohio State means to people.”
Piazza decided to work with a group whose experience she didn’t yet understand: rural
“This university was originally Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College
there were families who have been sending their livestock here
Thirty-two of Ohio’s counties are designated as rural by the U.S
meaning they have fewer than 2,000 housing units and 5,000 residents
“Imagine what Ohio State might look like to some students from a rural community,” she said
“It’s important to note the experiences they bring to campus are varied and distinct
Our rural students know they’re coming from a different background
they’re open to new things – and they want people to be open to them
One of Piazza’s earlier jobs at the university was in student recruitment
“Some of the rural students I met would come here
But some students would leave early,” she said
“I’d see them somewhere and I’d have questions
seeking to understand their sense of belonging and how that can be augmented
One of the things that surprised her was how many students mentioned meaningful relationships with faculty and staff
“It was surprising to me that so much of their community wasn’t just their peers,” she said
I now know that building this community takes all of us
My research has shown that students thrive inside and outside of the classroom when they feel valued
supported and connected to the campus community
scared and they need support from all of us
we have snacks and we’re happy to see them.”
Making Ohio State a welcoming place for everyone matters to Piazza
“This university has taught me the importance community and the value of seeing the world beyond your own experiences,” she said
and it’s the ways we support and value one another that make it truly special for everyone."

the family of “John” Dario Piazza
of Lititz PA with heavy hearts share that our beloved husband
and grandfather went peacefully to be with the Lord Jesus on Monday October 21
John dedicated his life as a civil engineer
balancing multiple jobs while earning his degrees from University of Lowell and Stevens Institute of Technology
His career took him to esteemed roles at Three Mile Island
where he led major projects like the steam generator replacement and overseeing the decommissioning of TMI…retiring with 40 years of service at Exelon
where he undoubtedly tried to “engineer” a way to improve everything he came across
he could be found tinkering around the house
fixing things that may or may not have needed fixing
or perfecting his yard—which he treated like his own personal golf course
or working on his golf swing (though that might have needed a bit more tinkering
who miraculously survived decades of dad jokes without filing a noise complaint; his daughters Michelina (Ross)
his over-enthusiasm for home projects; and his adored grandchildren
Also left behind is his loyal little dog Oliver
likely wondering why he hasn’t come back inside for his nightly snuggle
and his endless quest to “fix” everything (especially with a sense of humor) will live on in all of us
His smooches and jokes will be sorely missed
but the laughter and love he brought us will echo forever
A memorial service will be held Sunday October 27
at Spacht- Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory
There will be a time of visitation with the family from 1 PM until the time of service
Condolence Message: Be sure to include your name

Dear Lori – Richard and I were both so grieved to hear of the passing of your dear Dario
I know he will live on in the lives of your precious daughters
their husbands and in the lives of your seven grands
I remember our ‘younger days’ together and how smart and kind John was
May God’s everlasting arms of love bring you all much comfort and strength as you navigate this untimely loss
until the glorious day of reunion when all is restored.
Please accept my condolence and know you are in my thoughts and prayers🙏🙏🙏
John was a wonderful colleague who I had the good fortune to work with for many decades
He was a good man with a goofy sense of humor
and above all else a man who treasured his family
May his memory be forever eternal hugs to his wife Lori who i met a couple of times and his lovely daughter Angelina that i see off when she visits me in Georgetown hugs n love to the Piazza family.
From the early days in Parsippany when we were the young engineers playing soccer on the GPU teams
to the later days when we were the old timers playing volleyball with the new engineers
In between we worked together on numerous projects
notably spent fuel pool reracking and fuel handling bridge modifications
John liked to call me a “goober”and I ribbed him plenty as well
And it was all in good humor and mutual respect
because John really new his job and he knew how to work with people to get the best results
In an industry and environment that tended toward negativity
You could not help but smile when you were around John
I regret that we cannot have a long relaxing retirement
It would be an honor to restart the plant in tribute to his memory and legacy of work
The world is a bit less animated and enjoyable without him
but he lives eternally in his family and he is remembered fondly by his friends
and comfort and cherished memories for your loving family
“Until we meet again some sunny day!”
You were a great person to work with for many years & will be missed by so many
There was never a dull moment when you were around
John was such a nice man who I had the pleasure of working with for many years
It would be my wish to make everything immediately better. Please know that we care and that you’re in our thoughts and prayers.
and Rose I Just found out our hearts are broken for you and your family
We will always remember his heart to worship our Lord Jesus and his great sense of humor
May the Love of God envelop your family and bring you peace

He also earned $22.00 on Gulfstream's eighth race to close the gap further

Both Piazza and Boyd wound up wagering on 7-1 Commander
Yacowlef prevailed to preserve the victory for Piazza
Piazza cashed just once in the Final Table for $2.60 on Tampa Bay's ninth race
Piazza stuck with his strategy throughout the contest
"I didn't try to do anything different and didn't get me out of my comfort zone," he said
"That strategy put me up Friday and on Saturday; it was the same thing Sunday."

At first glance, it looks like any other metal shipping container. But “Portal & Piazza,” a pilot project of Stanford’s Town Center initiative
is equipped with immersive audio and visual technology and placed to serve as a gathering space for classes
The Office of Community Engagement (OCE)
in collaboration with the company Shared Studios
which has a network of similar vessels in locations around the world
brought the custom-fabricated container to campus this fall
It will remain in use through the end of the quarter
“There are so many ways our campus community members could use this unique space,” said Jordan Gray
“It’s been a great resource for creating connections on and beyond campus.”
The space is designed to be used in two ways
Up to 9 users at a time can step inside and speak face-to-face with someone in a similar
Floor-to-ceiling screens make users on the other end appear life-size as if they were in the same room
and it transforms into an indoor/outdoor space for small-scale events of roughly 50 people
The location was chosen because of the potential to attract and engage passersby
DJ Society used the space to perform a set during last month’s Reunion Homecoming
The Portal & Piazza is a shipping container that functions as both a window into other worlds and an open-air gathering space
Tomás R. Jiménez, professor of sociology in the School of Humanities and Sciences and a founding co-director of the Stanford Institute for Advancing Just Societies
recently hosted a faculty talk in the portal during which he and a few students met with refugees in Uganda to discuss immigration
He said that reading about someone’s experience or about research that documents larger trends and patterns doesn’t always give students a nuanced understanding of it
“So much of what we do in the classroom requires some imagination and opportunities to get close to the issues we’re studying can be few and far between,” he said
“The opportunity to connect with a refugee camp in Uganda from Stanford
is virtually impossible without this portal.”
Jiménez said the portal provides a more personal experience than video calls
“Because it’s in an enclosed shipping container
you’re really focused on the people on the other side of the screen
and you experience them differently because they're larger,” he said
the portal extended the classroom experience to the refugees in Uganda.”
Stanford community members can chat with people in similar portals in other countries
and change-makers from Makers Valley in Johannesburg
and discuss how they are mobilizing locally to create a global space for innovation
and catalyzing collective action to reshape their community
For more upcoming activations open to the campus community, check the Portal & Piazza page on the Town Center website. Stanford community members interested in using the space can contact Jordan Gray.

The father of Penn State student Timothy Piazza
who died in 2017 as a result of fraternity hazing
said it's "incredibly offensive" and dangerous that three Penn State fraternities are forming their own
independent governing body to avoid university regulation
The newly created State College Interfraternity Council (SCIFC) will include Sigma Chi
All three were already independent from the Penn State Interfraternity Council
with the first two having been suspended for violating university policy
The agreement aimed to more tightly regulate Greek-life organizations at the university
said the creation of the SCIFC to avoid those changes was offensive to him and his family
we thought we had a working relationship with Sigma Chi to some extent," Piazza said
Piazza said an independent interfraternity council is dangerous
the independent fraternities won’t be able to reach out to Penn State for help
"You’re just looking to get yourself in trouble," Piazza said
"And if something goes wrong at that fraternity
you can be assured that all of them are going to get sued by the person that gets hurt or impacted by it
Piazza said part of the responsibility falls on them as well
and discourage their children from joining independent organizations
Because you never think it can happen to you
Penn State has also spoken out against the independent interfraternity council
pointing out "documented dangerous behavior" by two of the fraternities that led them to lose university recognition

‘The Light in the Piazza’ opens at the NorShor Theatre Friday
and will officially mark the last show directed by Producing Artistic Director Phillip Fazio who has been with the Playhouse for 5 years
‘The Light in the Piazza’ has been a show that Fazio has always wanted to direct
The musical follows a mother and daughter duo who arrive to Italy on Vacation
the daughter Clara falls in love with a local gentleman Fabrizio
It’s a love story that Phillip says will touch a lot of audiences
“I just think that it’s such an unapologetically beautiful story about love and the beauty of love
I think it’s pretty magical,” says Phillip
Overall ‘The Light in the Piazza’ will be the 10th show Phillip has directed at the Playhouse
Previous shows he’s directed include: Xanadu
Phillip has also been a leader at the Duluth Playhouse as the Producing Artistic Director
working alongside Executive Director and friend Wes Drummond
Philip was a big player in bringing theatre out of the pandemic
“My first day of work I believe was May 18th
I was here hitting the ground running trying to figure out how we navigate this challenging new world that we’re living in,” says Phillip
The impact that Wes and Phillip have made together in Duluth has been huge according to ‘The Light in Piazza’ actor Jace Legarde
but it didn’t have this trajectory that made it seem like it was going to become what it is now,” says Jace
The multiple actors that Phillip has worked with have definitely taken notice of how hard he works as well
Actress Jenny LeDoux who plays one of the leads in ‘The Light in the Piazza’ previously worked with Phillip in last year’s ‘Cinderella’
and was very happy to be working with him again
“Phillip is perhaps one of the kindest
and respectful directors I’ve ever worked with
really wants to harness an actor’s honest impulses,” says LeDoux
“He really is an expert at finding nuance
really needs that,” says Jace LeGarde
“He’ll be like ‘What is that sound
maybe we should do this here and kind of line that up with the orchestra,’ and it just it goes from being a good show to a great show when you do things like that.”
It was a month ago when Phillip Fazio announced his departure
he will be headed to Florida after ‘The Light in the Piazza’ wraps up
“I’ve loved my time here at the Playhouse,” says Phillip
“The staff here is like my second family and I know I’m going to miss them so much
I promise I’m going to be back to visit
and see all the incredible work that’s going to get done over the next few years after I’m gone.”

Piazza made solid scores at Gulfstream Park cashing in the sixth race with Incoming

which paid $16.40 to win and $7.20 to place
He also scored a place bet at Turfway for $5.32
“I did not play a lot of favorites at all,” said Piazza

Piazza’s first place finish also earned him an automatic berth into this year’s Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge

a technical issue arose that prevented some participants from making mythical selections on several optional races that were part of Friday’s contest wagering menu
The issue lasted approximately from 3:00-3:30 p.m
PT and impacted any contest wagers attempted to be made during this time
Contest Officials determined that only contest selections successfully made through the contest self-service machines and website would be accepted
The issue was caused by incorrect data being entered for an alternate mandatory race play as required by Contest Rules following a Contestant Declaration
This has since been corrected and is not expected to cause any further interruptions
“We sympathize with those impacted by the disruption,” said Tournament Director Keith Chamblin
“There was no perfect remedy to address this unfortunate situation
the contest platform came back online and we were able to complete Day 1.”

his parents are back in court as part of a seven-year battle for justice and reform.Tim Piazza died after a boozy party at a Penn State frat house in 2017
His parents have fought for legal changes and greater awareness
— Jim and Evelyn Piazza had just arrived home Wednesday from Washington
House of Representatives pass what could become the first federal anti-hazing law
It was some measure of gratification for the New Jersey couple, who, along with about a dozen other parents who have lost children in hazing incidents
the vote came one day before what would have been their son Tim’s 27th birthday
» READ MORE: Two former PSU frat brothers enter guilty pleas in fraternity hazing incident in which Tim Piazza was fatally injured
then a sophomore mechanical engineering major at Pennsylvania State University
died following a booze-fueled fraternity hazing party
The case drew national attention in part because video surveillance from the house that night was played in court
showing Piazza and others moving through a drinking gauntlet and chugging alcohol
“While it won’t help save our kids,” Evelyn Piazza
we think this kind of tool would have prevented our kids from going to the organizations that they did
The “Stop Campus Hazing Act” would require all colleges that receive federal student aid to educate students about hazing
and publicly reveal groups that violate hazing policies

said during an interview at the Piazzas’ Spring Lake home Wednesday night
where he gave a special shout-out to Republican U.S
The federal legislation is just one of many initiatives the Piazzas have supported over the last 7½ years in what can only be described as their all-out effort to educate students and parents about hazing dangers
urge law enforcement to prosecute violators
and prod universities to enact punishments — as well as get justice for their son

Fry said he was struck by the couple’s ability to turn their tragedy into a mission targeted at helping others
“That is the ultimate in courage and bravery,” he said
“There is no doubt that probably through their work
The Piazzas said they have raised about $1.5 million since the first event in August 2017
and this wasn’t supposed to be our life,” said Jim Piazza
who wore two wristbands he said he never takes off: “Live Like Tim
the Piazzas will be in Centre County Court to face the former president and vice president of Beta Theta Pi
where their son endured what would be his fatal injury
who pleaded guilty in July to 14 counts of misdemeanor hazing and reckless endangerment
are the final two fraternity members to be sentenced for their part that night
which the Pennsylvania attorney general described as participating in and facilitating the hazing event
More than two dozen other fraternity members previously entered pleas to charges including hazing
(A civil suit the Piazzas filed against fraternity members is ongoing.)
Both said they have written their statements
though they haven’t shared them with each other
“The country’s watching to see what this sentencing is,” Jim Piazza said
and anything else is an endorsement that it is OK to do this in Pennsylvania.”
Tim Piazza headed out to what was supposed to be a fun-filled party at the fraternity he hoped to join
He had instructions: Dress in a jacket and tie and report at 9:07 p.m
But soon after he and other pledges passed through a drinking gauntlet
205-pound Tim Piazza fell down stairs and later died after no one called for help — for nearly 12 hours
and “non-recoverable” traumatic brain injury
the Piazzas leaned close and told their son they loved him
the Piazzas couldn’t have envisioned the path before them
“I thought I was going to leave my job,” Jim Piazza said
“I thought we’d be curled up in a ball somewhere.”
One of her sorority sisters who attended Bucknell made another ask
And then a mother who also lost her child to hazing asked Evelyn Piazza to fill in for her and speak at a fraternity leadership institute
died the same year as Tim Piazza in a hazing incident at Louisiana State University
Some young men cried and embraced them afterward
“One told me that I reminded him of his mom
and he had to leave in the middle and go call his mom and tell her he loved her,” said Evelyn Piazza
That’s when it really hit her: “We have something
The couple, along with other families who lost children to hazing, formed a group so they could work together to educate and press for reform — and support one another
It hasn’t been easy adjusting to life without Tim
Whenever someone new she meets asks if she has children
“They are not expecting the answer I’m going to give them,” she said
» READ MORE: Parents whose children died take collective aim at hazing
It meant putting a lot of Tim’s belongings in storage
She would shut the door quickly after entering
created a center for fraternity and sorority research and reform
and released one of the first report cards on Greek life
The couple early on settled their civil suit against Penn State
They still wish the university was doing more
Jim Piazza cited a rash of reports earlier this month of freshmen being taken to the hospital for intoxication
He said he suspected hazing and fraternity pledging played a role and sent a note to Penn State administrators about it
“They could have people out and about checking and providing better oversight,” Jim Piazza said
The Piazzas also expressed frustration about Pi Kappa Alpha
a fraternity that was suspended by Penn State but continues to operate independently with support from its national office
Penn State said in a statement that it remains rigorous in its response to hazing
there is no place for hazing at Penn State
and we investigate every incident that is reported so that we can take appropriate disciplinary action if an organization or individual is found in violation of our policies or the law,” the school said
The school said it is looking into “a few serious allegations related to excessive drinking” that Piazza had referred to
“We have not yet received information through our investigation to identify a chapter that may have been involved,” Penn State said
The university also said it is limited in its ability to regulate those fraternities that have lost university recognition, but has created a web page to alert the community to their suspensions
“When any individual student is found to have committed a hazing or alcohol violation
we can and do hold them accountable,” the school said
The university also asserted that when health and safety concerns arise or violations occur
and follow up with the chapter at a post-event meeting.”
Jim Piazza said Penn State should invite him and his wife to campus more to speak to students about hazing
noting that the couple does not charge and only asks for their expenses to be covered
“Who better to tell the story?” Jim Piazza said
The Piazzas also said they wish law enforcement would charge hazing violators more often
Jim Piazza said he is aware of incidents at Penn State since the new state law with tougher penalties
“We are aware of no charges against anyone since Tim died,” he said
“We’ve heard from parents or students that told us ‘Hey
somebody fell down the stairs … blackout drunk
we were told we saved their life,” Jim Piazza said
» READ MORE: Piazzas file suit against 28 former Penn State frat members in son’s death, settle with the university
he would like to see the defendants get “some level of meaningful jail time,” which he notes has happened in some hazing cases
But in court documents noting he has no prior criminal record
requested through his attorney a sentence of probation and a term of no more than three to four years
Details on what Casey plans to seek at his sentencing were not available
Jim Piazza also would like to see genuine remorse
and then I want to help you guys,’ that would be something,” he said

Federal anti-hazing legislation with ties to Penn State was passed by the U.S

The Stop Campus Hazing Act was shaped in part by the efforts of Jim and Evelyn Piazza

Their advocacy led to the creation of the Timothy J

who has led previous anti-hazing efforts in the House
